FISCAL YEAR-END STATISTICS

Daryl L. Martin, Executive Director

May 31 marked the end of another fiscal year. On the following pages you will find graphs that visually depict fiscal developments at Swiss Village over the past 45 years. Census was down during the fiscal year. Zurich and Lucerne Haus were partially vacated for most of the year to accommodate major renovation work within both units. That project was completed in April and 20 of the 24 units have been reoccupied with

additional units committed. A similar renovation is occurring inside Basel Haus with completion anticipated in early fall. Work continues on creating serving kitchens in each of the healthcare units. As a part of person-centered dining, Swiss Village is transforming the way that food is served in all healthcare units. This will create wider choices on foods selected, portion size and allow for optimal serving temperatures.

This project is targeted for completion in August. It has been nearly 20 years since Swiss Village started development plans for the North Campus. Several of the initial duplexes were constructed with a onecar garage. To accommodate current demand for two-car garages, renovation of several of the units are in the planning stage with work commencing later this summer. In addition to larger Cont. on pg. 2

Swiss Village experienced the loss of a resident who called Swiss Village home. Condolences go out to the family and friends of John Zehr who passed away July 23 at the age of 85. John came to Swiss Village in August 2006. A home is not a place. Its within in our hearts. Furnished with memories, friends, and loved ones. Which travel where ever we go.

BASEL HAUS —

Michelle McIntosh

Over the past few years, Swiss Village has had several major construction projects. It started in 2008 with the groundbreaking of the Wellness Pavilion, and then in May of 2009 construction began for Blumengarten, Swiss Village’s Assisted Living Wing. During this construction project Swiss Village also updated the main entrance, lobby area, and administrative office space. Following this major project, the remodeling began in what was once called West Wing, to create Westenfeld, a rehabilitation wing, which opened in September of 2011, equipped with private suites, and a new therapy gym. Most recently Swiss Village remodeled two independent living apartment wings, offering its first ever two bedroom suites, which include a large living room, dining room, and two bedrooms and bathrooms. As well as updating the lighting, flooring, kitchens, and bathrooms in all of the one and two bedroom apartments. So what is next? Swiss Village is currently working on renovating Basel Haus, another independent living apartment wing. This wing will include 4 two bedroom suites, 4 two bedroom apartments and 2 one bedroom apartments. Each of these apartments will have new lighting, flooring, kitchens, and bathrooms. Currently all 4 two bedroom suites have been sold along with a two bedroom apartment and a one bedroom apartment. Only 4 apartments remain for sale in Basel Haus. The remodel project is expected to be complete this fall. If you are interested in one of these newly remodeled apartments be sure to contact Michelle today at 260.589.3173. These available apartments will not last long.

RESIDENTIAL ACTIVITIES —

Jamie Kittle

Each Wednesday we have been enjoying taking groups of 5 residents on a golf cart ride to the clock tower for a picnic and to watch the glockenspiel presentation. The trips have been highly popular and an added bonus has been watching the children play at the splash pad! We celebrated the 4th of July with an Uncle Sam Social where red, white, and blue sundaes were served. Also, Eula and Ken VanEmon also brought their baby pigs for a visit, which brought back lots of residents who grew up "down on the farm." We also enjoyed another summer picnic at Ouabache State Park and "vacationed" at the Outer Banks through a virtual tour. We ended the month with Swiss Days Festivities including entertainment by Frances Bond, the Jay Fox Polka Band, and the Fort Wayne Kinder Und Junge Bavarian Dancers.

THERAPY —

Tara Farlow

Restless leg syndrome (RLS) is a neurological disorder characterized by throbbing, pulling, and creeping in the legs with an overwhelming urge to move them. Symptoms typically occur in the evenings while you're sitting or lying down. RLS is classified as a movement disorder, as individuals are forced to move their legs in order to gain relief from symptoms. Common Symptoms Include: Uncomfortable sensation in your legs, especially when sitting or lying down Irresistible urge to move your legs Symptoms that are worse at night and absent or insignificant in the morning Restless leg syndrome is a serious but treatable condition. The key is managing the symptoms to control the disorder and increase periods of restful sleep. Making some lifestyle changes could help to relieve symptoms. Tip’s for Relief: Avoid tobacco products, alcohol or any other substance that may be causing or worsening the problem. Reduce or eliminate caffeine, especially several hours before bedtime Eat a well-balanced and nutritious diet Exercise regularly, but complete your workout at least 2 hours before bedtime Take a hot bath, elevate and massage your legs every night Also, you may benefit from physical therapy. A physical therapist can help by designing an individualized program of exercises and activities with an emphasis on strength, flexibility and proper stretching techniques. Talk with your doctor about your treatment options for RLS and ask if physical therapy can help.

BLUMENGARTEN ACTIVITIES —

Cole Rupp

The summer has been full of excitement in Blumengarten. We have had fun with some new recipes and enjoyed the craft projects. This month, we even had facials provided to some of our ladies. Pampering is something most of us enjoy! Our residents continue to enjoy the individual time we spend with just them. It is a great way to get to know each other a little bit better.

HEALTHCARE HAPPENINGS — Karen Rowell

ALPENROSE —

In the warm, warm month of July we kept busy with a variety of act iv it ies in Health Care. We celebrated July 4th with a concert by Lisa Rich, followed by yummy red, white, and blue cupcakes. Later in the month we enjoyed another musical afternoon with Paul White who presented us with a wonderfully diverse concert. We continued our outdoor activities throughout the month, and were able to take a “big” busload of residents out to survey some of the countryside, including the covered bridge in Ceylon. We also spent an afternoon reminiscing about and enjoying some fresh strawberry sturm. It is interesting to note how many variations there are to such a simple “recipe.”

This month we have been making patriotic things and talking about our country and our freedoms. We started off the month by cooling off with some popsicles. They were so good. We saved the sticks and cleaned and dried them. Then a few days later the residents helped paint the sticks red, white and blue. We made our own little flags. The residents also made patriotic ice cream cones. The residents really enjoyed themselves. We talked about our country and the freedoms that we have. Residents shared 4th of July celebrations memories. Reminiscing with what types of food they would bring to past celebrations. Many of the residents shared that they enjoyed seeing fireworks. “The bigger the better”, one resident shared.

SOUTH CAMPUS WELLNESS —

Emily Arnold & Rachel Rosswurm

It has long been a tradition at the South Campus Wellness Center to recognize the achievements of our residents in the areas of strength, balance, and flexibility. Kenneth and Eula VanEmon share success in utilizing our program here on South Campus. Kenneth participates faithfully in the 1:00 pm strength and balance class on Tuesdays and Thursdays. In one year's time, Kenneth's lower body flexibility increased by 136%. He also saw a 112% increase in his upper body strength as well as a 333% improvement in his balance! Kenneth and Eula also enjoy riding the Nustep together after class. “The Nu-Step gives both of us the opportunity to adjust the machine so that we can get the maximum benefit from exercise while being together.” Kenneth said. As a result, Eula also gained improvements in both her lower body strength (114%) and flexibility (115%). Her endurance level has increased by 460%! The Van Emons say, “You should come and give it a try!” Call us at 589-4467 to find out more information.

Kinder Haus —

Heidi Schoeneman

The month just flew by! It is hard to believe our school age kids will soon be boarding the big yellow school buses and heading back to school. The summers seem to get shorter and shorter. The school aged kids have certainly enjoyed their summer here at Kinder Haus. We also have several kids who will be starting Kindergarten. Several of these children started here as infants. We have seen their smiling faces every day for the past 5 years. We all get attached to each and every one of these

Page 10

children and a few tears may be seen in our eyes as they head out the door of Kinder Haus for one last time! The infants have painted with dif f er ent t extu r e b al l s, fingerpainted and are really working on their walking. They loved to go for buggy rides right now. The 2 year olds have been learning about the zoo. The children have enjoyed making clothes pin giraffes and marble paint zebras! The 4 & 5 year olds have been talking about baseball and how you play the game. They enjoyed talking about camping and

what they need to take along when they go camping. The school age kids enjoyed a trip to the 4-H fair and also enjoyed fishing. A record 72 fish were caught in an hour.
