REFLECTIONS — Daryl L. Martin, Executive Director This article marks my last contribution to the Village News. I received instructions to be reflective. So here are some thoughts… They say that time flies when you are having fun. That certainly seems

Daryl Martin, Executive Director will be retiring at the end of August after 36 years of dedicated service to Swiss Village.

to be confirmed during these past 36 years. I arrived in Berne in time to experience the after effects of the blizzard of 1978. The streets were plowed, but most were onelane and the snow was a mile-high. And it seems like there hasn’t been a dull time since. Without question, I have been fortunate to have worked with and learned from the best! Swiss Village’s Board of Directors have been visionary and imaginative in setting the aspirations for the organization. At the

same time I have been privileged to serve alongside a leadership team and core of supervisors who have given of their best to advance the purposes of Swiss Village. I have always felt that Swiss Village’s staff goes the extra mile and I am grateful for their compassionate competence that is demonstrated daily. And certainly I have been humbled by the unselfishness of countless donors and volunteers who have enabled Swiss Village to expand programs, Cont. on page 4

Swiss Village Mission Statement: Swiss Village Retirement Community is a not-for-profit corporation, committed to providing quality and affordable retirement living facilities and services in a Christian environment that enhances life with dignity, meaning and appropriate care for the senior adults from the surrounding community without regard to race, religion, sex, or handicaps that can be accommodated within our delivery system.

A LOOK AT FISCAL YEAR-END STATISTICS Daryl Martin, Executive Director Roger Young, Controller May 31 marked the end of another fiscal year. On this page and following you will find graphs that visually depict fiscal developments at Swiss Village over the past 46 years. Census was down during the fiscal year. Basel was vacated for the first half of the year to accommodate major renovation work. That project was completed in November and 9 of the 10 units have been re-occupied with the remaining unit committed. A similar renovation is scheduled to begin in Zermatt Haus with completion anticipated later this year. We experienced several significant expense increases this year. Group health expenses were up nearly $500,000 due to several large claims. The cold winter pushed utility costs up $50,000. In addition, maintenance and repair costs were also a challenge, up $35,000. It has been nearly 20 years since Swiss Village started development plans for the North Campus. Several of the initial duplexes were constructed with a one-car garage. To accommodate current demand for two-car garages, renovations of two units were completed this past year. Additional renovations on existing duplexes will be considered as dictated by demand. Again we want to thank the residents, donors and staff for your support during this past fiscal year. Much continues to happen to make Swiss Village a great place to live and work. The Board of Directors, administration and staff are committed to continuing Swiss Village’s tradition of excellence.

services and facilities worthy of a 5 Star provider. Finally, but not least, I am grateful to the residents and their families that have shared of their lives and experiences during the intervening years. I have been blessed! Life at Swiss Village has been both challenging and life enriching. I am grateful for both. The challenges provided opportunities for professional, personal, and spiritual growth. God has been faithful. I shall forever be indebted to Swiss Village for the many openings that came my way to experience leadership and service roles in the field of aging. There is a saying that. “The best is yet to come!” That is my prayer for Swiss Village. I believe the Board of Directors has chosen well in selecting Rod Mason as my successor. Swiss Village will always have my support and a special place in my heart!

IN MEMORY Swiss Village experienced the loss of several residents who called Swiss Village home. Condolences go out to the family and friends of Kenneth Yoder who passed away June 18 at the age of 87. Kenneth came to Swiss Village in November 2009. Hulda Kleinknight was at the age of 96 when she passed away on July 4. May 2008 was when she came to Swiss Village. We express our sympathy to the family and friends of Hulda. On July 5 Mildred Wanner passed away at the age of 92. Mildred had been at Swiss Village since October 2007. Our condolences are with Mildred’s friends and family. Condolences go out to the family and friends of Leah Dalton who passed away July 8 at the age of 91. Leah came to Swiss Village in May 2014. “The first week of August hangs at the very top of summer, the top of the live-long year, like the highest seat of a Ferris wheel when it pauses in its turning. The weeks that come before are only a climb from balmy spring, and those that follow a drop to the chill of autumn, but the first week of August is motionless, and hot. It is curiously silent, too, with blank white dawns and glaring noons, and sunsets smeared with too much color.” ― Natalie Babbitt, Tuck Everlasting

WEAVING AT SWISS VILLAGE —

Jamie Kittle

Thanks to resident Marilyn Spurgeon our weaving room on Main Street has come alive again with activity! Marilyn is our "expert weaver" and not only has taught other residents how to weave such as resident Howard Flueckiger, but also has involved residents in all parts of the weaving process including cutting jeans into strips, sewing strips together, and preparing strips for the loom and knotting the ends of the rug for a perfect finish! We are also excited and thankful to gain another "expert weaver," Lillian Gilruth to help in the weaving room as well! We now have rugs for sale once again in the boutique! Currently, we have denim rugs as well as a few colors of "looper" rugs of various sizes in the boutique. Stop by the boutique between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. or 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Saturday to check out these rugs! While you are at it, stop by the weaving room on Main Street (just down the hall from the boutique) to check out the progress! Marilyn and Lillian hope to have an Open House in the Weaving Room this fall to showcase their work, demonstrate how to weave, and hopefully gain the interest of other prospective weavers! Marilyn, Howard, and other residents typically gather in the weaving room every Wednesday afternoon to work together on rugs. Feel free to join them at anytime!"

Thank You

Our endless thanks to Daryl for his 36 years of service to Swiss Village. There have been over 2000 residents living at Swiss Village during his tenure. Daryl has impacted each life and the lives of each family. We wish Daryl well in his retirement and know that his imprint on Swiss Village will always be present. Best wishes, Daryl!

NEIGHBORHOOD ASSISTANCE PROGRAM —

Jennifer Lehman

Kinder Haus is excited to announce that we have been awarded a Neighborhood Assistance Program (NAP) Grant! We have been awarded $5,301 in tax credits to distribute to donors through this program. The money raised will be used to purchase iPads and other technology to help further prepare each child for school, while allowing donors to receive extraordinary tax benefits. The program is administered by the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority (IHCDA). With area schools using more and more technology in primary grades, we are excited about this opportunity. Technology is the way of the future and this will help to prepare our kids for school. The iPads can be used for so many different educational opportunities. The possibilities are endless for ways to use and integrate technology and learning. The Neighborhood Assistance Program (NAP) works by allowing us to share the $5,301 we have been awarded with qualifying donors. If you were to be a NAP donor, you will receive half the value of your donation back as a tax credit on your Indiana state taxes. You might even be eligible for a deduction of your federal tax return as well. The minimum eligible donation is $100 and all credits are offered on a first-come, first-served basis until our allotment is gone. The following is an example. For your individual figures or to see if this type of giving is right for you, please contact your tax preparer. If you were to donate $2,000 you would receive a NAP tax credit deduction of $1,000. If you itemize your federal deduction and have a 31% tax rate you could see a deduction of $620. Subtracting both out this would be similar to giving $380. For donors this program will give the added benefit of substantial tax benefits, but most important this will benefit all of the children currently in Kinder Haus and all of those to come. If you are interested in participating in this program or would like more information please contact Jennifer Lehman at 260-5894529 or JenniferL@SwissVillage.org. A NAP Credit Application must be turned in with your donation. Please contact Jennifer for this document. Your gift will help to enhance the learning experience for many children. Thank you for supporting the children of Kinder Haus!

RESIDENTIAL ACTIVITIES —

Jamie Kittle

We have enjoyed great weather for outdoor activities this month as we ventured to Ouabache State Park for a picnic and also took golf cart rides to the clock tower for a picnic lunch and to enjoy the glockenspiel presentation. We also enjoyed homemade, hand dipped ice cream at Dee-Zertz on a hot summer day! We also enjoyed outings to Jefferson Pointe, the Gathering House, and especially the Glenn Miller Orchestra at Bearcreek Memories in Celina. We ended the month celebrating Swiss Days with gospel singer Francie Bond, the Jay Fox polka band, and the Fort Wayne Kinder Und Junge Bavarian Dancers.

HEALTHCARE HAPPENINGS — Karen Rowell We kicked off the month of July with a picnic! Plans were to have it outdoors, but the weather dictated a change, and instead we enjoyed our lunch of coney dogs and all the accompaniments in the gaily decorated auditorium. Later, the Tom Frye Family Band presented a concert of many of our old favorite songs and hymns. We really enjoyed seeing how the family has grown! Other musical highlights of the month included return visits from Fred Walker and Mike Wilson. We have loved being outdoors this month. Bus rides, golf cart, and wheelchair rides, sitting in the courtyard, having a lunch outing … it's been great to be out enjoying the weather.

BLUMENGARTEN ACTIVITIES —

What a lovely summer we h a v e b e e n enjoying! Many of residents continue to sit outside before meals and in the afternoon, just soaking up the sun and all that God given Vitamin D! July has been full of activities with the special music associated with Swiss Days, birthday parties for a couple of our residents and the normal fun we have with board games and golf cart rides. We enjoyed the morning when the Kinder Haus kids joined us for blowing bubbles, which lead to discussion of making bubbles with glycerin and soap when the resident's were younger or with their children and the wands made to used to blow them.

ALPENROSE —

Donna Stout

The month has gone by so q u i c k l y . During the first part of July we went to a Music program in LP – The Frye Family. They were great and have such a wonderful gift. We’ve gone on many bus rides and golf cart rides too. We have been taking a few residents at a time for a picnic lunch up to the clock tower. We arrive before noon to watch the glockenspiel go around. The residents have enjoyed this. Other activities include Bible study with Mike, Hymn Sing-a-longs, Bingo etc. The Kinder Haus kids always put smiles on our faces. And make us wonder what we were like at that age. This picture is of them singing “Jesus Loves Me” to the residents.

SOUTH CAMPUS WELLNESS —

Emily Arnold & Rachel Rosswurm

Miriam E. Sprunger is one of our South Campus wellness class participants. She has been participating in Strength and Balance class at 10:15 twice a week for 5 years now. At 95 years old, she is still improving her scores! She has increased her endurance (measured by the two minute step test) by 77% since starting with the classes in 2009. She also increased her lower body strength (measured by the chair stand test) by 66%. In this last year, she improved her endurance by 15% and her lower body flexibility by 10%. This goes to show that you can gain strength, balance and flexibility at any age. Consistency is the key! For the past month the children at Kinder Haus have been participating in an exciting recycling project. They have been collecting caps from all kinds of plastic containers from around their homes. These caps will be recycled and made into a picnic table for them to enjoy outside. You can help us by saving your caps and placing them in the boxes in your recycling areas. You can also drop them off at the front desk. We need 400 pounds of caps to make one table. Types of

Page 10

Andrea Miller

caps to collect include snap on, twist off, flip top, and spout caps. Caps can come from pop bottles, water bottles, laundry detergent, milk jugs, medicine bottles, cottage cheese containers. Any type of plastic cap can be dropped off. The school age children have been washing the caps each week and also weighing them. The kids are estimating how much each bag weighs and are excited to see the weight add up on the scale when the bags are placed on it. So far, we have 200 pounds collected and so

we have 200 pounds to go. It has been a fun project for all of them to work together. One mother told me that her son has decided he does not want to drink water from the faucet; he only wants to drink bottled water so he can save the cap! Thanks for saving your caps for us!

CHARITABLE GIVING NEWS — Jennifer Lehman Do you have a plan for the future? Have you thought about what type of legacy you want to leave? A planned gift can be a wonderful way to leave a legacy. Most people think only wealthy people can give in this way but almost everyone can make a planned gift while still caring for their loved ones. The most common planned gifts include a gift through your will (bequest), a charitable gift annuity, a gift through your retirement plan, or a gift of life insurance. If you wish to learn more about planned giving, Swiss Village will be hosting a Planned Giving Seminar on September 11 at 6:30pm. Ben Sprunger from Everence and Dave Baumgartner from Baumgartner Attorneys will be

presenting on planned giving options and answer any questions you may have. Jennifer Lehman, Director of Development, and Rod Mason, Executive Director, will also be present to help answer any questions and show the impact these gifts have. This seminar will be a time to explore if planned giving is the right option for you. You will be able to learn about many different planned gift types along with benefits they may offer you, your family, and Swiss Village. Come learn how you can make sure that you have planned for the future and will be able to leave a lasting legacy for generations to come while caring for those who are most important to you.
