RESIDENTIAL ACTIVITIES —

During August, we kicked off the month with a strawberry shortcake and ice cream social to use up our frozen strawberries from earlier in the season, which sure hit the spot! We went out and about a lot this month to various places, and often had perfect weather for our adventure. We enjoyed a nice day for a road trip to Upland, IN to Ivanhoes for lunch and ice cream. However, we didn't let rain stop us from a trip to Sechler's Pickle Factory for a tour and pickle tasting, followed by lunch at Bob's Restaurant in Berne, IN. We also made a couple trips on the golf cart to the clock tower for a picnic lunch. We went consignment store shopping at Closet Update in Portland and Morning Glorys in St. Marys and had lunch at the Tin Cupboard in Fort Recovery. We also enjoyed shopping locally at Troyers and Blue Creek Bakery. Another hit this month was Esther's homemade ice cream she made for Cooking with Esther Ray. Flavors included peach, blueberry, vanilla, and the most popular - butter pecan. We finished the month with a virtual tour of Tennessee and the Great Smoky Mountains!
HEALTHCARE HAPPENINGS — Karen Rowell August 8 th was a perfectly gorgeous day to be outdoors – just what we were hoping for! That morning dozens of volunteers from Swiss Village and the community came together to take over 80 of our residents on a mile-long wheelchair ride through the “neighborhood.” We released balloons into a clear blue sky, and Cont. on page 3

We are beginning to enjoy our " fruits of our labor" as we all enjoyed corn on the cob from our garden! What a special treat! It brought back a lot of memories of planting our own garden and harvesting the vegetables and fruit and then canning and preserving for the winter. We have a new staff member! Monica Schwartz RN has joined our team and will be working some first and second shifts. We are excited to have her on board. Many residents loved the weather we have had and just enjoyed sitting outside, soaking up the sunshine! Perfect weather!
ALPENROSE —

On August 8th, we went on a Summer Walk. Almost everyone from our area was able to go. The residents rode in wheelchairs. We had volunteers, family, and staff members pushing them. The walk was about 1.67 miles. We couldn't have asked for a nicer day. After our return to Alpenrose, we had a sack picnic lunch. Upcoming events to help the “Save the Memories” team: September 5th – Pasta Bake Luncheon. RSVP by September 3rd. Sign-up at the Front Desk. The cost is $4 and will include: Food, Dessert, and Drink. Don't forget to get your “Save the Memories” T-shirts for $10. There are 2 different designs and Cont. on page 7

SOUTH CAMPUS WELLNESS — Cognitive decline is one thing we all want to avoid if we can. Much research has been done on how to prevent this disease or slow the progression. The Mayo clinic reported in 2012 that older adults who engage in moderate physical activity such as walking, hiking, aerobics, strength training, yoga or swimming AND used their computers had significantly lower odds of developing cognitive impairment. Another Mayo clinic
Emily Arnold & Rachel Rosswurm study in 2011 reported that aerobic exercise, such as walking, swimming, or biking may cut the risk of dementia and slow the progression once it starts. Yet another study published in 2011 in the Journal of Neurology found that people with cognitive decline benefited from physical activity. In the study, walking was shown to increase brain activity. The researchers found that a regular walking program can improve

Our school kids have all gone back to school. We will miss them. They helped water flowers all summer here at Swiss Village. They kept a chart and recorded temperature, weather and how many gallons they used each time they watered. They used 859 gallons of water this summer! Wow! The infants have been enjoying walks outside. They love to see the traffic go by. The toddlers have had some new friends join them from the

They really enjoyed singing songs and listening to the books about apples. The 3’s are quickly changing as a new school year begins. They have been reading “The Little Mouse the Red Ripe Strawberry and the Big Hungry Bear!” The children
