GREETINGS!

—

Rod Mason, Executive Director

What a privilege it is for me to now begin the next jaunt of my career here in Berne, Indiana in the role of Executive Director for Swiss Village! My wife, Laurie, daughter, Olivia, Great Dane, Ashley and Chinchilla, Zeke and I

Active Aging Week 2014

headed west on August 1, settling into our new residence just in time to have Olivia begin her 10th grade year on the first day at South Adams. We truly feel that this has been a Divinely-inspired and -led journey and are looking forward to the days, weeks and years ahead working with the fine employee family, the most capable Board of Directors and the greater Berne area residents as we put forth our best effort at attending to the needs, desires and expectations of the residents we are serving today and those we

expect to serve in the generations yet ahead. Daryl Martin, his two predecessors and their Board of Directors have done valiant work in positioning Swiss Village. She enjoys a stellar reputation that is widely known within the ranks of competition, the industry at large, and of course, the ever-dynamic and allimportant consumer! I commend Daryl and teams for this achievement and stand firmly committed to help that quality standard not waiver! God is good and I believe this Berne ministry is firmly in His grasp.

THERAPY —

Tara Farlow

By incorporating physical wellness into our day-to-day routine, we have the capability of reversing our physiological age by 9 years… that’s right, 9 years! The way we age is 30% genetic and 70% how we treat our bodies. Treating our bodies well has the capability of lengthening and improving quality of life, reducing the effects of dementia

RESIDENTIAL ACTIVITIES —

and Alzheimer’s, and so much more. If you’re looking to begin or improve your physical wellness, try to find exercise classes/activities that interest you and involve a friend! Be sure to listen to your body, start out slow, and stick with it! There are the four main components of exercise: strength, cardiovascular endurance, balance,

and flexibility. The combination of these exercises works to improve balance, prolong independence, increase postural stability, reduce pain and injuries, and delay/prevent diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and other diseases associated with aging. Why wait? Get up and get moving today!

September was another fun-filled month! We enjoyed shopping at Troyers and filled our bags with goodies from Blue Creek Bakery at the beginning of the month. We also spent a gorgeous afternoon on Fryback Lake courtesy of Floyd Liechty who hosts us for an annual boat ride, followed by refreshments on the patio. The next evening, Kathy Quillen's family hosted a cookout at Ouabache State Park complete with hot dogs over the fire and homemade soups and pies. We also enjoyed John Louis's show, "On The Edge of Illusion" featuring comedy, magic, and a variety show. The last week of September, which is Active Aging Week, was packed full of "Senior Camp Adventure" programs at the Wellness Pavilion where we enjoyed a DNR presentation on Indiana State Parks, a Birds of Prey Presentation, an evening of s'mores, a campfire, and storytelling with Jerry Sprunger, as well as a fishing derby to name a few!

BLUMENGARTEN ACTIVITIES —

Cole Rupp

This months craft with Sharon included making a candy jar that the residents' painted, decorated and then put in their apartments or left out in their cubbies for others to share. So you may want to take a walk down Blumengarten way and see if there are any treats! Our outside time of walks and sitting in the chairs are slowing down as the weather has cooled down lately. We have really enjoyed sitting in different areas, just watching people, cars, and animals bustling about. We are going to try something new next month during our Thursday morning activities. We thought it would be fun to make some of our favorite crock pot recipes and let everyone sample in the evenings! EVERYONE! Please do not forget Tuberculosis testing on October 7th with the reading and administration of the Flu shots on the 9th! See you then!

ALPENROSE —

Donna Stout

By the time you will have read this article – The Walk to End Alzheimer’s will have been held. “Save the Memories” – Team Swiss Village turned in $1,800 to the Alzheimer’s Association. The committee wanted to thank everyone for their donations and support during our fundraising events. The last event was held on September 6 – Paint to Canvas. Ruth Green donated her time to this event. We had so much fun. We painted FOR-GET-MENOT flowers. What a POWERFUL little flower for such a devastating disease. Alzheimer’s and/or Dementia rob so many people of life long memories. (Fact: Someone develops Alzheimer’s disease every 67 seconds – Alzheimer’s Associations Facts and Figures Video.)

HEALTHCARE HAPPENINGS — Karen Rowell Happy Autumn! It seems as though this year is just flying by, and our bus rides and courtyard visits have allowed us to see the beginning signs of fall color coming on. We even got to watch a small, quite tame squirrel munching on corn in the courtyard! September was a very “social” month for us in healthcare, as we had both a meet-and-greet time with our new Executive Director, Rod Mason, and a good-by party for our faithful long-time transportation staff, Fred and Esther. We also enjoyed our annual (delicious!) Ice Cream Social with our families and friends, and had a really fun time with a “Hawaiian Luncheon” in the auditorium.

Page 5

Those participating in Active Aging Week this year were able to enjoy a sack lunch and a 1/2 mile hike through the Loblollies Marsh with a tour guide. They enjoyed their sack lunch outside of the Limberlost Visitor Center and had a tour of the Gene Stratton Porter outside grounds while there. It was a gorgeous day for the all the outside activities.

Our “decade of wellness” open house will be held in the Auditorium on Wednesday, October 8th from 2-3 PM. Emily Arnold & Rachel Rosswurm we are about and what we have been doing! We have residents that have been participating this whole time. Residents have participated by coming to a class or riding machines, doing bible studies, walking programs, mind activities and trips. As you can see, a wellness program involves much more than just physical Richard Beitler, Helen Mazelin, & Ruth Sommer are keeping activity. active in the Wellness Room.

The infant room has excitedly welcomed some new little ones to their group. It is so much fun to see their personalities start to develop. You can already start to see who will be the followers in the group and who will be the leaders! They have painted with water colors, played in water, gone on buggy rides and lots of rocking and loving! What a busy room. The toddlers have had fun playing outside. The weather is beginning to change and we are now having to put coats on before we go out to play.

The 2 year olds have been learning about community helpers. They made a variety of art paintings. A toothbrush painting for a dentist, a traffic light for a police officer, hammer painting for a construction worker, and a road map painting for a truck driver. Oh what fun to paint! The 3’s have been busy learning about construction workers. They used blocks and shaving cream to pretend they were brick layers. Oh my what fun it is to be a brick layer! The 4 & 5’s have had so much fun learning about

Janessa King, a "brick layer", with her work of art.

dinosaurs and how some of them ate meat and other only ate plants. They have also learned about apples.

Your gift to the Kinder Haus Neighborhood Assistance Program (NAP) helps each child in our program learn in new and exciting ways. In order to receive the full benefit of this program we need your help! We have been awarded $5,301 in tax credits to distribute to donors participating in this program. All of the money raised will be used to purchase iPads and other technology for the children of Kinder Haus. The NAP Program works by allowing us to share the tax credits we have been awarded with participating donors. If you were to be a NAP donor, you will receive half the value of your donation back as a tax credit on your Indiana state taxes. You might even be eligible for a deduction on your federal tax return as well. With the Indiana state tax credit and the federal deduction a $2,000 donation might only have an out-of-pocket expense of $380

after all taxes. For your individual figures, please contact your tax preparer. The minimum eligible donation is $100 and all credits are offered on a first-come, first-served basis until our allotment has been given away. For donors this program will give the added benefit of substantial tax benefits, but most important this will benefit all of the children currently in Kinder Haus and all of those to come. If you are interested in participating in this program or would like more information please contact Jennifer Lehman at 260-589-4529 or JenniferL@SwissVillage.org. A NAP Credit Application must be turned in with your donation. Please contact Jennifer for this application. Your gift will help to enhance the learning experience for many children. Thank you for supporting the children of Kinder Haus!
