TRANSITION
—
Daryl L. Martin, Executive Director
"You do not need to know precisely what is happening, or exactly where it is all going. What you need is to recognize the possibilities and challenges offered by the present moment, and to embrace them with courage, faith, and hope." ~Thomas Merton
On October 31, I shared with the S w i s s Village Family my plans to retire on or a b o u t October 1, 2014. Via this newsletter I now extend that news to our wider Swiss Village Family and the broader community. Over the past 36 years, my love for the Swiss Village Family has grown deep. Swiss Village is an exceptional organization. The residents and the families that I have been privileged to meet have provided me an extraordinary opportunity to make a difference; not only in their lives, but also in my own personal growth. Additionally, I have been fortunate to have worked with a visionary Board that has always been committed to doing what is right for the residents and employees. Their dedication was matched by the competent and compassionate staff that I have been blessed to work with day-in and day-out. Without question Swiss
Village’s staff is tops. And for sure, the generosity of the supportive donors and volunteers that have unselfishly given to help expand and enhance the facilities, programs and services of Swiss Village has been a humbling blessing and encouragement. My years at Swiss Village have been enriched by many and I shall always be indebted! Swiss Village is in good hands! The Board of Directors is blessed with persons who have outstanding vision and wisdom. I can assure you that the Search Committee and the Board will keep the best interests of the residents and employees at the center of their concern as they process and select a successor. At the same time I pledge to do everything within my capabilities to help the transition to go well. The Search Committee will be Chaired by Ted Lautzenheiser and comprised of Greg Meyer, Tom Muselman, Mark Settlemyre, Nancy Subler, and Paul Zuercher. Kent Liechty continues as Board President. The Committee will be working with a national consulting firm to help guide the process. Change is a part of life’s journey. With transitions come uncertainties and unknowns. That is a given. What is not a given, is how we choose to navigate through the uncharted future. Thomas Merton provides wise counsel. As persons of faith we can embrace the change with courage, faith, and hope. Let us trust God to guide us as we move into the future.

BLUMENGARTEN ACTIVITIES —
Cole Rupp
What autumn brings to Blumengarten is the last afternoons sitting out on the porch swing in the courtyard for the freshness in the air enjoying pumpkin cookies. With the garden coming to an end, the corn husk gave perfect opportunity to decorate the courtyard. Crafts with Sharon, brought back canning day memories as we used the canning lids that were painted and formed into an old fashion jack o lantern This brought back a lot of childhood memories and laughter about the fall season and harvest.
ALPENROSE —
Donna Stout
Jo Rupp, daughter of Helen L. came and played hymns for us. A small group from the Kinder Haus came up and did a craft with some residents. Rose R. and Ken Y. helped the children with the spider hats, which were cute. I n the middle of the month, we had a fall carnival, which the public was invited to. The children played games on the units. A few more golf cart rides where taken. Betty Z and GreatGrandson, Kley Beer, from the day care, enjoy a ride together.

HEALTHCARE HAPPENINGS — Karen Rowell Here in healthcare we are in the full swing of autumn! We have enjoyed our final lovely bus rides through the fall countryside, and said “farewell” to the ash trees that had to be taken down in our courtyards, knowing we’ll not get to see their leaves turn again. But, we’ve also welcomed pumpkin season, by both eating them and decorating them! Our residents spent a fun afternoon painting pumpkins. We shared much laughter (and a few minor messes), creating our own personality-plus pumpkin characters. Later in the month we welcomed cute, costumed youngsters to our annual Fall Carnival. Our residents passed out treats and enjoyed watching the kids participate in games and contests.
RESIDENTIAL ACTIVITIES —
Jamie Kittle
This month we enjoyed a Skype interview with missionary Elizabeth Smith in Vietnam and heard a little bit about her work there. We also enjoyed hosting Josephine, a missions speaker from "The Fortress" in Uganda, a safe home for pregnant teens. Josephine especially enjoyed meeting resident Naomi Wiederkehr who often sends children's dresses, bibs, hats, and booties to The Fortress. The residents welcomed 13 children at the 36th Annual Baby Day. The residents also enjoyed many fun fall activities including decorating pumpkins, making fall door decorations, baking pumpkin pie cupcakes, visiting Menchhoffer's Pumpkin Farm, and scenic drives as the leaves changed.

SOUTH CAMPUS WELLNESS —
Emily Arnold & Rachel Rosswurm
One of the areas we enjoy traveling to is Blumengarten. We hold our sit and be fit, seated exercise class there on Mondays and Wednesdays at 2:00. We enjoy our group and the social time. This exercise time is open to any resident who wishes to remain seated during class. We work on range of motion, flexibility
and strength. A Blumengarten resident, Bonnie Habegger had the following to say about class. “The exercise class helps keep me in shape. It may even help keep a little weight off. I also enjoy the people in class and the instructors. The conversations are interesting and help me think.”
Art & Gloria Muselman Wellness Pavilion — The Arthur & Gloria Muselman Wellness Pavilion will be hosting a eating healthy for the holidays healthy cooking demonstration for any senior 55+ on Friday, November 15 at 2:00 p.m. at the Wellness Pavilion. The infants have been busy painting. They enjoyed playing with small pumpkins and gourds. The toddlers have noticed the leaves changing colors as they have been playing outside. The cooler weather has had them reaching for their coats too! In the classroom, they made fall crafts, scarecrows, pumpkins and owls. They also decorated using apples at they have been learning about the different colors of red, green, and yellow. Washing a big orange

Learning about patterns by placing orange, and black spiders in an “AB” pattern. The 4 & 5 year olds have had so

The end of the year is approaching, and we all know what that means: holiday fun and food galore! From the preparation of the meal(s) until the leftovers have diminished, every dish appears irresistible. Our taste buds are more than pleased while eating our way through the holiday season, but our overall health is usually left unsatisfied. Substituting ingredients, gaining awareness and acknowledging your food intake during this eventful time of year are some ways to protect your overall health.

CHARITABLE GIVING NEWS — Jennifer Lehman At Swiss Village we can tell that the holiday season is just around the corner. Pumpkins, mums, and Indian corn are out in full force. Christmas crafts are being made in all areas of the building. The spirit of the holidays seems to fill us to our fullest. With the holiday season upon us we want to take time to say thank you and express our appreciation for all of those who have been so generous to Swiss Village this past year. Here at Swiss Village we’ve had much to be thankful for. So far this year we have had over 190 individuals, businesses, and churches help to support us financially. We’ve also had 118 regular volunteers put in many hours helping the residents of Swiss Village, the children of Kinder Haus, and the community at the Wellness Pavilion. Because of the generosity of everyone who
has helped support Swiss Village we are able to continue to offer exceptional care and services. We can’t thank you enough for your support of Swiss Village. Even though we have been very blessed by all of our donors and volunteers we are still in need of your support. As you start to think about your year-end giving we hope that you will remember S w i s s Village t h i s holiday season. Thank you again for all of the support that you help to provide.
