MERRY CHRISTMAS
—
Daryl L. Martin, Executive Director
“Look, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel,” which means, “God is with us.” – Matthew 1:23 It is that time of year when Christians around the world celebrate the coming of God as the Christ Child. God modeled the giving of self by coming to live among us. In Jesus we get the ultimate gift of knowing and experiencing God. Traditionally, Christians celebrate Christmas by giving gifts. Modeling our gift giving after
God’s example would suggest that we give the gift of self. And for sure, the gift of self to those around us will spread goodwill and cheer; which is a whole lot more life enriching than the giving of material gifts. This Christmas be a person of joy and peace! Share yourself with others and let others share themselves with you. Bask in the goodness of being present for others! Merry Christmas and Best Wishes for a Wonderful 2014!

RESIDENTIAL ACTIVITIES —
Jamie Kittle
During November, we enjoyed a shopping trip to Darlington Holiday Warehouse where everyone walked away with a bag full of $1.59 bargains to begin the holiday season. We also enjoyed remembering and honoring our Veterans through a "We Americans" program featuring patriotic music and scenery of famous landscapes around the United States. We also had the annual Holiday Craft Bazaar & Book Fair which featured craft items made by our residents as well as some local crafters. During Cooking with Esther Ray, we enjoyed learning how to make a pumpkin dump cake, which some thought was better than pumpkin pie! We are gearing up for the holidays and look forward to decorating for the holidays very soon!
BLUMENGARTEN ACTIVITIES —
Cole Rupp
The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that infect the nose, throat, and lungs. It can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. The best way to prevent the flu is by getting a flu vaccine each year. Signs and symptoms of fluPeople who have the flu often feel some or all of these signs and symptoms: Fever* or feeling feverish/chills, Cough, Sore throat, Runny or stuffy nose, Muscle or body aches, Headaches, Fatigue (very tired), some people may have vomiting and diarrhea, though this is more common in children than adults. *It’s important to note that not everyone with flu will have a fever. Certain people are at greater risk for serious complications if they get the flu. This includes older people, young children, pregnant women and people with certain health conditions (such as asthma, diabetes, or heart disease), and persons who live in facilities like nursing homes.
HEALTHCARE HAPPENINGS & ALPENROSE— Karen Rowell We have had a busy and enjoyable month of remembering and being grateful with our Healthcare and Alpenrose residents. The beginning of the month saw us celebrating Veterans’ Day with a special evening program. We recognized and honored the veterans living here among us, and very much appreciated hearing from representatives of the local American Legion post. Our special speaker for the evening was Stephania Taylor, who spoke of her son Nick’s service and sacrifice for our country. It was a very moving evening for our residents. Healthcare residents who were honored as veterans were: Bill Allmandinger, Raymond Franz, Grant Habegger, Merlin Habegger, Howard Luginbill, Robert Read, Harry Reiners, Omar Reusser, Victor Steiner, and Ken Yoder. Later in the month we gathered with families and friends for our annual two evenings of Fall Socials in the auditorium. Our entertainment this year was presented by Gabe Bailey, the eleven year old son of Swiss Village’s Director of Residential Services, Derrick Bailey. Gabe played piano and sang for us, and wowed us with his talent! It is easy to see why he won the “Berne’s Got Talent” competition during Berne Swiss Days this summer. We wrapped up the month with a return visit from musician Fred Walker. Our residents so much enjoy the wide variety of music he brings to us.

Dr. Robert Judge was able to take some time out of a busy schedule to present new information and guidelines on preventative health to both residents and employees. Everyone appreciated the new information and left with a renewed sense of empowerment when it comes to taking care of our own well -being. We are ultimately responsible for many of the factors that contribute to our overall health. Dr. Judge touched on proper diet and hydration, good sleep habits, taking medications properly and getting the appropriate screenings
done to keep our health in check. In addition, he spoke of exercise. No matter your stage of life, being physically active is a key to maintaining quality of life. We need strength, we need to stay flexible and we need to have good balance to prevent falls! We offer classes that will help you with these important areas of physical well-being. In addition, group exercise is a great social time and has been shown to keep people exercising. Take the first step in your wellness walk and give us a call! 589-4467.

They have been making crafts for Thanksgiving, Indian headbands, vests and of course turkeys! They have been practicing the 5 little turkey poem and I’m a little Indian so they are ready to entertain family at Thanksgiving dinner! The 2 year olds have had fun painting with feathers and making paper bag turkeys. The 3 year olds have been talking about what it

means to be thankful! They have mentioned that they are thankful for mom and dad, brothers, sisters, tractors, monster trucks, books and Curious George the monkey! The 4 & 5 year olds are also busy learning about turkeys, pilgrims, Indians, and Thanksgiving. They colored a tepee and the Mayflower. They made colorful turkeys and a thankful turkey. CHARITABLE GIVING NEWS — Jennifer Lehman At Swiss Village we want to invite you to become a part of our mission. You can help make sure that residents get the needed care they deserve at a high standard of quality. You can help our residents live with dignity and continue living life to the fullest. Through financial support from generous donors we have been able to do this for 40 years. Over the past ten years we have been able to give over $2.8 million in care to those who, through no fault of their own, were unable to pay for the full cost of their care because of supporters like you. We are pleased to offer you many ways in which you can help to support Swiss Village. You can become a part of our mission by donating through a check, stocks and bonds, IRA rollovers, property, or artwork.
You can also leave a legacy or planned gift. Through this means of giving you can leave a bequest in your will, start a charitable gift annuity, or donate a life insurance policy. We hope that you will join in supporting the works of Swiss Village. If you would like additional information or have any questions please contact Jennifer Lehman at 2 6 0. 5 8 9 . 45 29 o r JenniferL@SwissVillage.org. As the year comes to a close we want to thank everyone who has helped to support Swiss Village, Kinder Haus, and the Muselman Wellness Pavilion. We are grateful to have you as part of the Swiss Village community.
