their eyes and hearts wide open, engaging t h e i r w o r l d meaningfully. Seeing a need, they give of themselves to make a difference. Instead of waiting for someone else to do it, they just do it. As a not-for-profit organization, volunteers add extra hands and voices of support to the services Swiss Village provides. In many ways volunteers are unsung partners in Swiss Village’s goal to fulfill our mission to
enhance the lives of those we serve. They quietly and unselfishly give time to do obscure tasks that are vital to everyday life at Swiss Village. There is nothing glamorous about sorting mail, being a front desk greeter, helping to feed a resident, pushing a wheelchair bound resident. N e v e r t h el e s s the worth of the human interaction that is provided by their presence is beyond valuing.

BLUMENGARTEN ACTIVITIES —
Cole Rupp
My name is Jamie Kittle and I am the new Activity Director. We started off the month with a music program from Noteworthy. We had fun filling out NCAA brackets. Cooking With Esther Ray was another hit with Shamrock Spirals. We enjoyed many Easter activities. We look forward to many signs of spring so we can get back outside and do many more fun, new, and exciting things! Be sure to check out information about our Fort Wayne Philharmonic Concert trip on Friday, April 26 and our Tin Caps Game outing on Wednesday, May 22!
What would St. Patrick's day be without a little luck from the Irish? Several residents joined in making shamrock milkshakes to share with the other residents. They were delicious, refreshing and enjo yed by m any. We are hoping with a little more luck from the Irish that spring will soon arrive . We are all getting tired of being inside so much, and look forward to the green grass and flowers!
HEALTHCARE HAPPENINGS — Karen Rowell
ALPENROSE —
The blustery month of March had us “hopping” with all sorts of activities and cel eb r at io n s. Our residents e n j o y e d coloring Easter eggs one afternoon … eggs we needed for egg races when the children from the Berne Preschool, as well some of the Kinder Haus children, came to visit on two separate days. We also put together cute little Easter treat bags for all of the kids. Paul White came to entertain us with a musical program of “green” songs, in honor of St. Patrick’s Day and the beginning of spring (although apparently no one thought to inform the weather of the change in seasons!). And, the Sonship Quartet gave us an afternoon of Gospel music, leading up to Good Friday and Easter.
Bring on Spring!!! Even though we are so ready for spring, we had lots of fun in March. The residents went to a m u s i c program in the auditorium to hear Paul White. He sang lots of songs that had to do with green. The residents enjoy hearing him sing. In the middle of the month we had a St. Patrick’s celebration. We had green cupcakes with green icing. When you first looked at them, you might have thought they were made with spinach. The later part of March, we had a special visit from the Berne Nursery School kids. They performed a little concert for us. The joy that children bring to us!

The month of March has marched on very fast for everyone at Kinder Haus. The infants have been exploring and playing with plastic Easter Eggs. It is so much fun to watch them explore new things. The 3 year olds have been learning about different occupations. The teacher asked the 3 year olds a question about doctors. She asked them when I go to the doctor…. She got several interesting answers such as, “I get fixed”, “They look at your teeth and your tongue”, They help people if they are sick and they put band-aids on my ouchies.” You never know what kind of Blakeley Pyle stirs the an answer you will get when you ask a 3 batter to make rainbow year old! Making rainbow colored cupcakes. cupcakes was also a highlight of the month for the 3 year olds. The 4 & 5 year olds have been learning about St. Patrick’s Day and Shamrocks. Celebrating Dr. Seuss’s birthday was enjoyed by all. Did you know that Dr. Seuss authored more than 60 children’s books? His most famous book “The Cat In the Hat” was written to fulfill a challenge from a publisher who asked Dr. Seuss to incorporate 220 vocabulary words into a children’s book. Wow! What a challenge!

FROM THE DESK OF MARGIE — Margie Dougherty
April
40th
When we celebrated our anniversary, I did some comparisons of Swiss Village from the early years to 2008. We are now at the 45th anniversary year and I thought I would update that information. The human capital (residents and employees) of Swiss Village are our most important capital. Without residents, the employees have no job. Without the employees, the residents wouldn’t have care. Some history of that human capital: • In 1968 Swiss Village opened with 10 residents; today we have about 275 residents. • In the early years we had a total of about 50 employees. Today we employ 370 people (about 200 full-time equivalents). • Through the years we have employed approximately 2800 employees. Swiss Village has become home to a number of people who used to be employed here or served on our Board of Directors. Currently, we have 11 residents who have served as employees and we currently have 5 residents who have served as members of the Board of Directors. And where else but in Berne could you employ 17 Habeggers, 32 Lehmans, 14 Liechtys, 21 Neuenschwanders, 28 Schwartzs, 47 Sprungers, and only 6 Jones and 18 Smiths in a period of 45 years?
NEW EMPLOYEES Swiss Village welcomes several new staff members this month. Jamie Kittle, Residential Activities, Aubree Davidson, Healthcare Activities, John Kaeser, Muselman Wellness Center.
