MILEPOST 45

Daryl L. Martin, Executive Director May 27th marked another milepost for Swiss Village. It has been 45 years since the first residents moved into the brand new facilities just completed on the west end of Berne. The threshold crossed on that date expanded the options to engage life with active purposefulness. Since that date the opportunities to participate in a range of significant activities has continued to develop and grow. The choices span the interest spectrum from being a participant in the

Kinder Haus intergenerational events to the w elln ess initiatives. Inside this issue:

The Anniversary Theme: “Providing Compassion, Promoting Wellness, Achieving Excellence” captures Swiss Village’s passion to provide a diverse experience that reaches beyond the expected. Residents’ needs vary and so do the program and service possibilities. Complementing these possibilities is a continuous effort to enhance the experience. The result is that Swiss Cont. on page 3

HEALTHCARE ACTIVITIES —

Karen Rowell

Each year we pack all kinds of fabulous activities into National Nursing Home Week, and this year was no exception. We began with our Ladies’ Tea on the Saturday morning before Mothers’ Day. Our residents and their guests enjoyed sweet refreshments and great singing by the Lairson family. On Monday, talented gospel pianist Russell Strome presented an afternoon of music that we loved to hear and sing along with. Tuesday morning, the children from Kinder Haus joined us outdoors when Bill and Sally Reynolds came to visit with a menagerie of furry and feathered friends. The Kohne family also brought two of their vintage farm tractors for our resident to see. Then, in the afternoon, Judy Dye came to present a show of some beautiful quilts and bags that she has made. “Soaring Hawks,” a bird rescue organization, visited on Wednesday afternoon. We learned a lot of interesting information about hawks and owls, and were awed at getting a closeup look at some magnificent birds. Thursday we were busy all day! At noon we had our very well attended (and delicious) staff and resident luncheon in the auditorium. Tom Walsh came in the afternoon to demonstrate making pottery on his wheel. And, in the evening we had a lively program by the students of the Razz ‘M Jazz Dance studio. Finally, on Friday we wrapped up the week with a “Friendship Walk,” taking about 50 of our residents for a wheelchair ride in the lovely spring weather with the help of many volunteers. An afternoon party capped it all off. The Activity Staff wishes to thank everyone who help to create this memorable week!

We are so thankful for Rosetta Ringger and the 12 years! She has so faithfully served the residents of Swiss Village! It is with humble hearts and gratitude we wish Rosetta a wonderful retirement! Acts 20:24 ESV But I do not account my life of any value nor as precious to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God. Luke 1:15 And when his time of service was ended, he went to his home! These two verses remind me a lot of Rosetta! Always very giving always understanding and always putting Christ above all others! We are thankful for the time she has graciously given Swiss Village! Thank you Rosetta from the bottom of out hearts! In Rosetta's place we have welcomed Shanti Richardson. We also welcome Elaine Boze who will also work as needed!

It is hard to believe that Kinder Haus will be 12 years old in June. We have had lots of little feet going pitter patter through our doors over the years. We have seen numerous children start as infants and have watched them grow and develop into curious kindergarteners. The very first infant we had is now in middle school and several of the children that we had are now in high school. There are currently 3 staff members at Kinder Haus who have been here since opening day of June 2001. Where has the time gone? These children we have had over the years will be the future leaders of our community someday. The sky is the limit on what these children can accomplish over their lifetime! We are so blessed to have been “home” for so many special children over the years. The children at Kinder Haus have certainly impacted lots of lives at Swiss Village and the residents have certainly impacted lots of their lives as well. As the African proverb states, “It takes a Village to raise a child!”

Guided tours were provided through Westenfeld, Swiss Village’s short-term rehabilitation wing and Zurich Haus featuring the newly remodeled independent living apartments. Guests had the opportunity to sign up for one of two prizes, a 45 day free membership to the Arthur & Gloria Muselman Wellness Pavilion and (4) 5 Dollar Footlong Sandwiches from Subway. CHARITABLE GIVING NEWS — Jennifer Lehman For those of us who have parents or grandparents who are aging, we want to see them able to live life to the fullest. We want them to enjoy all the aspects of the community, still participate in activities they love, and receive the care they need. Here at Swiss Village we are able to help our residents do just that through generous donations of time, energy, skills, services, and money. Some of our donations come through volunteers giving of their time, energy, skills, and services multiple times a week, once a month, or even once a year. Through these acts of kindness we are able to offer activities and services outside of what is regularly provided by our staff. This allows a space and time for residents to socialize, laugh, enjoy friends,

family, and neighbors, and they get to live the life they want. Through generous donations of money we are able to help care for 55 residents who are unable, through no fault of their own, to cover needed care. These donations come from memorials, charitable gift annuities, bequests, cash, and many other forms. Giving of money allows our residents access to the quality care they need. We want to encourage you to think of how you can give to our many residents at Swiss Village, and what a gift from you truly means. Some may say that several of these are just small acts but for us they are all big when they’re changing someone’s life.
