CELEBRATING OLDER AMERICAN’S MONTH

Martin, Executive Director “Do not cast me off in the time of old age; do not forsake me when my strength is spent.” – Psalms 71:9 We read about it in the newspapers, we hear about it on TV, and when doing market research it comes to the fore. America is getting older. The population age 65 and up has grown to over 41.4 million, an increase of 18% since 2000. Today’s 65 plus

age group now represents 13.3% of America’s population and will climb to 21% of the population by 2040. That is a lot of people! This year’s Older Americans Month theme is “Unleash the Power of Age.” Every year since 1963, the Administration on Aging has designated May as the month set aside to celebrate Older Americans Month. So, how do we as a country adequately celebrate

our Older Americans? … And specifically how do we “Unleash the Power of Age” into that celebration? Maybe a good start is a reminder from the Psalmist. In Psalms 71:9 we hear the plea to not be “cast off” or “forsaken”. What does that mean in 2013? How do we value the older persons among us? Is it something that is done for, or something that is done by the older person? A bit of reflection would suggest that it is likely Cont. on page 2
