Is it just me, or has this year flown by faster than ever? It feels like I was just penning this letter for our Spring 2024 issue, and here we are, enthusiastically embracing the fall season with a new year on the horizon. As I look back over the past few months, I am filled with immense gratitude for the weddings we’ve had the honor of showcasing in our magazine, on our website, and across our social media platforms. It has been a true privilege to share these intimate moments with you, and I sincerely appreciate the couples who entrusted us with their stories. And lest we forget, it’s an honor to showcase the work of the talented wedding professionals who have played a pivotal role in turning these events into the spectacular celebrations they were meant to be.

From charming lakeside ceremonies that embraced the tranquil beauty of the water to vibrant city celebrations brimming with energy and life, each event was unique and unforgettable. The season featured a delightful mix of backyard nuptials, rustic barn gatherings, and sophisticated loft weddings. Whether set against the backdrop of one of the world’s largest suspension bridges or nestled in the heart of a sprawling vineyard, these moments have reminded us why we’re so passionate about weddings in Michigan!
As we transition into fall, we welcome the season with open arms, eager to embrace its cozy comforts. From the brilliant colors of the changing leaves to the way the golden hour light caresses everything it touches, there’s nothing more beautiful than fall in Michigan. And with all this natural beauty surrounding us, it’s no wonder more and more couples are choosing to say “I Do” during this magical time of year.
If you’re one of those couples, this issue of nearlywed is for you. Its pages are filled with the ideas, inspiration, and resources you need for planning your one-of-a-kind wedding in Michigan. Our Real Weddings (starting on page 80) are a celebration of everything the state has to offer. From a glorious celebration overlooking Grand Traverse Bay to an intimate affair at a Birmingham restaurant, we bring you nearly 50 pages of weddings to kindle your own creativity.
And speaking of creativity — this issue features some of the most innovative and exciting vendors in Michigan. Turn to Something New (starting on page 20) to meet Svenja Parotat, a Traverse City-based artist combining her talent for jewelry design and passion for flower farming. You’ll also learn how The Collins Collective is transforming the event rentals game, get to know live wedding painter Samantha Conrad-VanRanden, and take a spin with Motor City Vintage Rentals’ newest fleet member, a vintage Porsche Speedster name Caspian. We also take you behind the scenes at designer Hana Abboud’s new namesake flagship store (page 28), stop in to chat with stationery artist Liz Fons at Jade Social (page 32), and learn how Brianne Janer of Petal Archive transforms dried wedding flowers into beautiful works of art (page 34).
For even more autumnal inspiration, don’t miss our cover story. Shot by Niki Marie Taylor at the stunning Greencrest Manor, it features some of the season’s most beautiful wedding gowns. The gorgeous, haunting images were inspired by classic gothic romance novels like Jane Eyre, by Charlotte Brontë, and Rebecca, by Daphne du Maurier.
As you plan the celebration of your own epic romance, I hope you find inspiration in these pages. It’s an honor to be part of your wedding planning journey — thank you for choosing nearlywed to be your guide.
Cheers,

Blue Skies Ahead
By Kerri Molitor
Planning and designing a wedding can be both complex and expensive — however, Amy and Doug Collins have launched Blue Sky Event Rentals to offer couples an affordable way to plan the weddings of their dreams. The duo combines decades of wedding planning and design experience with trendy and affordable rental products, all chosen with their couples in mind.
Amy and Doug are the couple behind The Collins Collective, a brand that encompasses Blue Sky Event Rentals, Blackbird Formal Wear, and two wedding venues: The Collins Off Main and The Collins Clocktower, both in Chelsea. Amy and Doug have built their businesses around the needs of their customers — Blue Sky was launched after they noticed their clients’ frustrations as they hunted for affordable wedding rental items.
“We want to be the cutting edge for everything fun, hip, and exciting,” Amy says. “But we noticed that the cost for trendy rentals in this market was astronomical. We started offering our couples select items for rent at affordable rates, and that’s how Blue Sky began.”
Blue Sky offers a wide range of products — including tableware, tables, chairs, ceiling installations, accent lighting, and other decor — all chosen with an exacting eye for design, price, and ease of use. When finding the perfect product poses a challenge, Blue Sky will even make them in-house. Their La Brea Ink Tables were handmade by Doug and include mix-and-match table legs to suit any design.
In addition to their rentals, Blue Sky also offers in-house wedding design services, utilizing Amy’s decades of experience as an event designer. Across all their brands, The Collins Collective offers couples a white-glove customer experience.
“Nothing is impossible,” Doug says. “We want to be the company that is a breath of fresh air to work with because we’ll go the extra mile for our couples.”

Looking for a sustainable — but beautiful — option for your wedding stationery? West Michigan stationery designer Kayleigh Dumond has created a line of ecofriendly invitations printed on seed paper that blooms into wildflowers when planted. Available in her Etsy shop alongside traditional stationery, Dumond’s seed paper offerings were inspired by a book she read in college, Cradle to Cradle: Remaking the Way We Make Things by William McDonough and Michael Braungart. “It explained the concept of developing products that instead of going from ‘cradle to grave’ — a landfill — products could be made to either be biodegradable or reusable,” she says. “It really resonated with me.” With Dumond’s seed paper stationery, your wedding guests can plant their invitations after the big day and enjoy the flowers they yield for years to come.

Now, with the introduction of a new private label collection called La Femme, there’s even more to love at Spring Sweet.
“Like most things in the shop, La Femme was inspired by our love of all things feminine and French — beautiful textiles, timeless silhouettes, and ooh la la prices,” says the boutique’s owner and namesake, Spring Sweet. “Also, dresses are customizable; brides can change bodices and skirts, and most fabrics are interchangeable for a fully custom look.”
By Rebecca Voigt
Styles include Anouk, a daring lace gown with a deep v-neckline and curve-hugging fitted skirt; Soleil, a delicate fit-and-flare, plunging v-neckline gown in soft tulle layered over crepe; Vienne, an organza ballgown with a sweetheart bodice, stunning train, and optional slit; and more. The gowns in the collection are available in sizes 0 to 26, as well as in split sizes, so each bride is guaranteed a perfect fit. And with prices starting below $1,800, the collection is beautiful, luxurious, and accessible.

Q&A: Samantha Fay
While scrolling through Instagram or the real weddings on our website for inspiration, you may have noticed something uniquely artistic at some recent celebrations. Live wedding painters are an increasingly in-demand form of capturing wedding memories and turning them into one-of-a-kind pieces of art. Here, we chat with artist Samantha Conrad-VanRanden about the finer points of this growing trend.
Tell me about your background in art — when did you know you wanted to be a professional artist, and how did you get your start as a painter?
I have always known I wanted to be an artist. I’ve been drawing since I was a child and never stopped. I took as many art classes as I could in school and also had private lessons. I earned my Bachelor of Fine Arts from Indiana University and then moved to Michigan for graduate school, where I received my master’s degree in painting from Kendall College of Art and Design. My goal has always been to become an art professor, and I’m currently working as an adjunct professor at Grand Valley State University.
How would you describe your artistic style?
I would describe my artistic style as photorealistic with an impressionistic approach. I strive to make my portraits as lifelike as possible while incorporating loose brushstrokes and heightened colors to add a dynamic and expressive quality.
What drew you to live wedding painting?
I saw a video on TikTok of a live wedding painter and I thought it looked like a lot of fun. As a teacher, I have summers off and liked the idea of traveling and being my own boss. I’m also a romantic at heart, so capturing a couple’s love story in paint really appealed to me.
Why should couples book a live painter for their wedding day?
Having a live painter at your wedding is a fantastic way to preserve your memories in a unique keepsake or heirloom. It also provides wonderful entertainment for your guests. I enjoy interacting with all the family and friends in attendance. Unlike a camera, a live wedding painting allows for adjustments and flexibility. For instance, I can remove unwanted elements like an unattractive wall or bad weather and include special additions, such as pets that couldn’t attend or loved ones who have recently passed away.
From the initial booking to the final painting, what’s the process for couples interested in working with you?
When a client is ready to book with me, I send out a detailed questionnaire via email. It includes questions about their vision for the painting and specifics about the wedding day. I also offer a video chat to ensure we fully understand their preferences. The couple selects a package and canvas size. On the wedding day, I arrive a few hours early to set up and start painting the background based on the chosen scene, such as the first kiss, a portrait from the
couple’s photos, or the first dance. I continue to paint throughout the evening and present a grand reveal at the end of the night. I then take the painting back to my studio to refine details and apply a protective varnish. About four to six weeks later, the painting is ready for pickup, or I can ship it if the couple is not nearby.
If you’ve already had your wedding but still want a custom painting, I can create recreations from photos in my studio. Additionally, I offer flower bouquet paintings and portraits.
What advice do you have for couples who are interested in booking a live painter?
If you’re considering booking a live painter for your wedding, start by reviewing the artist’s portfolio and researching different live painters. Many live painters will travel, so don’t be afraid to broaden your search. I’ll be traveling all across the country this season! Ensure their personal art style resonates with you. Don’t hesitate to ask questions and clearly communicate your vision for the painting to ensure they understand your expectations.

Bijoux et Fleurs
By Giuseppa Nadrowski
On a whimsical property at the tip of northern Michigan’s Old Mission Peninsula lies the picturesque gardens of Svenja Parotat, the creative force behind floral and jewelry design studio Svenja & Company.
But it wasn’t always gardens and gemstones for Parotat. At 17, the Berlin-born artist was scouted by an agent and soon found herself modeling across the world and living in Paris, New York, and Los Angeles. While she was “charmed by the idea” and inspired by the artistic aspects of modeling, “I always sort of felt very lost in modeling, and in the world. I couldn’t really connect with it,” she says.
Then a serendipitous stop at a boutique in LA inspired her to take a jewelry design course, giving her the direction she’d been craving.
“I always had a thing, even growing up, for really small details,” she says. “My dad was an artist. My grandfather was an artist. I went to a very artistic school, but I just didn’t know what to do with my hands.”
When she took her first jewelry class, she says, “I realized — this is really what I wanted to get into.”
Soon after, Parotat landed a mentorship in New York under the acclaimed jewelry designer David Benlolo, learning everything from gemology to the art of handcrafted design. Parotat opened her eponymous label, Svenja Jewels, in 2010, using only high-quality materials like diamonds, preciouscolored gemstones, 18K gold, and platinum to design vintage-inspired pieces with a signature, modern flair. Her handcrafted designs are sleek and minimal yet subtly dramatic.
Parotat draws on her years in fashion and traveling the world to finesse the colors and textures of each piece. But the true beauty in each design lies in the intricate details. From reversible hoop earrings to hidden elements and custom engagement rings, “it’s the details that really matter to me,” she says.
Then the COVID pandemic hit. At the time, Parotat was living in Brooklyn with her husband and two children (River, 10, and Ruby, 7). With the onset of the pandemic, the couple decided it was time to leave the city. They packed their bags and headed for their summer home in her husband’s native Traverse City — the perfect refuge during those trying times.
“We were so lucky to have our house here,” Parotat says. “And we
figured, well, we’ll deal with what’s in the future later.”
With great schools nearby and a gorgeous 10-acre property, the family — who felt city life had become too overwhelming and loved how nature nourished their souls — decided to stay. With no prior knowledge of flower farming, Parotat began redesigning the property’s established perennial gardens while also starting rows for her own cutting gardens.
“During the pandemic everyone was staying home, so I really immersed myself in the world of flowers,” she says. “I just started adding and adding, and people started inquiring about my flowers.”
This year, Parotat doubled her fields, growing a myriad of cultivars from Italian ranunculus, lisianthus, and peonies to dahlias, poppies, Russian statice and more. “My real love does not belong to one flower, its more the combination of flowers that one chooses to put together,” she says. “A flower that could look lost on its own can create amazing texture and beauty and can tie a whole piece together.”
From spring through fall, she creates eye-catching arrangements drawn from her years in fashion and inspired by the jewelry she creates. She offers weekly flower subscription services and has begun to offer her services for workshops, weddings and events. She also loves to dry her florals for installations, bouquets, and wreaths.
“I love the combination of dried and fresh flowers. There is something about all the life stages of flowers and plants that fascinates me, and there is also an aspect of being conscious about the environmental factor of not flying in flowers from overseas, but instead creating gorgeous pieces with what the season has to offer,” Parotat says.
She also draws on the colors and textures from her gardens to help her design her jewelry pieces. “The flowers are so liberating because I grow the flowers myself. I touch the soil. I plan the colors I like and want to grow, and then, you know, in the winter when it’s cold here and quiet here, they really inspire me,” she says.
“This flower farm was never planned. I really fell into it. It was a pandemic. I started growing more. I started adding. I couldn’t stop, and I loved it,” Parotat says. “When I look back at my life, I’m like, this was meant to be. It feels really beautiful, like I have arrived because it all now makes sense. All those things I’ve searched for have fallen together.”

Since launching Motor City Vintage Rentals in 2011, Kymberly Andren has curated a fleet of beautiful, Detroitmade classic cars from the 1940s that includes multiple Packards and a Ford Deluxe Convertible. But recently Andren stretched beyond her Motor City roots to add a bit of European flair to her collection of iconic vintage cars, introducing a 1957 Porsche Speedster named Caspian.
“I’m obsessed with Detroit auto history, it’s in my blood,” she says. However, Europe also holds a piece of her heart. Starting in sixth grade, Andren studied
French for nearly 10 years, and she’s also explored all over the continent for personal travel and work.
“Traveling from London to Paris, Munich to Brussels, Salzberg to Madrid and Rome, I quickly fell in love with the European culture and its classic sports cars,” she says. “You can say I’ve waited a few decades to add this chic, romantic, and adventurous speedster.”
Couples who want to incorporate Caspian’s adventurous spirit into their own big day are in good hands. Andren’s lifelong love of cars blossomed into a business when she
sourced her first Packard, Hugo, for her own wedding, and her father and husband serve as the company’s drivers to this day.
“Our one-of-a-kind drivers do anything for anyone, and I’m not just saying that because they’re my dad and husband,” she says. “We’re a family-owned-andoperated company that always goes above and beyond for our clients, who we consider one of the family because that’s who they are.”

BECKER’S BRIDAL
CELEBRATING 90 YEARS
Dreams By Design
With her namesake collection and newly launched flagship store, Hana Abboud has the perfect dress for every bride
By Kerri Molitor | Photography by Julie Page, Collab Creative
Shopping for a wedding dress should be magical — and designer Hana Abboud has made it her mission to give brides that special moment with her line of completely customizable bridal gowns, available at her new flagship boutique in Dearborn.
“Every bride deserves to feel beautiful and confident on her wedding day,” Abboud says. “I am using my store to disrupt the industry because we don’t do sales like other stores — I’m not pushy. If you love a dress, that’s amazing. But if you don’t love a dress, that’s OK because now I’ve given you what you need to find the right one. Finding the right dress for you is what’s most important.”
Abboud’s passion for all things bridal started young. When she was 8 years old, she read wedding magazines instead of playing with dolls. She turned that passion into a career in 2015 when she decided to leave corporate America to open a bridal boutique, L’Amour Bridal, and in 2020 she began designing her own dresses. Nearly
10 years after opening her store, Abboud realized that her dresses were outselling other designers.
Capitalizing on her success, Abboud decided to rebrand her bridal store. Her newly launched, namesake flagship now exclusively sells her collection of gowns.
“I always had the idea of designing a collection because many of my brides requested modest silhouettes or wanted customizations they couldn’t afford,” Abboud says. “I started sketching to create the designs and sorting through samples to find the quality materials I wanted to put my name on.”
Abboud’s collection is based on feedback directly from her brides and offers them the versatility they desire.
“These are my designs, but I will redesign my designs to make a dress that’s perfect for the bride,” she explains. “We can change necklines, add or remove sleeves, make it off the shoulder, adjust the back, change train lengths, and change colors or beading. You name it, we can do it.”
The debut of Hana Abboud is exciting for the designer in more ways than one. Not only is she exclusively selling her gowns, but she is also upgrading the experience for her brides with a luxurious atmosphere, a modern and elegant look and feel, and drinks and hors d’oeuvres.
“I love my brides,” Abboud says. “I’m grateful they come to me and trust me with their wedding day. Whatever it takes to make the experience and the gown perfect, then let’s do it.”

Art for Life
With Jade Social, create something lasting for your love story
By Kerri Molitor | Photography by Julie Page, Collab Creative
Wedding
stationery designer Liz Fons has been designing custom invitations, save-the-dates, and more for weddings for nearly 15 years. Her custom paintings and sketches transform every couple’s story into beautiful art that can set the tone for your wedding — and be used throughout your life. Fons also owns and operates a storefront, Jade Social, in Ferndale, selling her stationery and other curated gifts. Here, we chat with Fons about creating wedding art that lasts a lifetime.
How did you get your start in the wedding industry?
After graduating from art school, I struggled to find a job in textiles, the career I thought I wanted. I took a job in event planning and started designing wedding invitations on the side. As word spread and more people wanted my designs, I knew I wanted this to be my career. Looking back, I don’t know if I would have found this path if it weren’t for my early career struggles. Everything happens for a reason.
Why is wedding stationery so important?
Invitations and save-the-dates are the items your guests will interact with the longest because they’re posted on refrigerators for six to 12 months. They are also one of the most customizable parts of your wedding that sets the tone for your whole event. Plus, the longevity of my designs is so fun — you can use a custom monogram for the rest of your life.
What are your favorite kinds of projects?
I love to really push the envelope on creativity. I recently worked on a wedding at the Shinola Hotel where we added all these creative ideas in a crazy, fun shade of pink. Getting out of your box helps you stretch as a designer.
The more years I do this, the more I love adding personal touches. I’ve painted a lot of dogs and even put them on koozies. For one couple, I painted the waterfront from their ceremony for their envelope liner and gave them a print as a wedding gift. Venue paintings are a popular choice for weddings, and I have a line of cards with custom paintings of 45 Michigan venues.
What advice do you have for couples looking for custom stationery?
We recommend having an open mind and being ready to collaborate with your designer. We know how to turn your inspiration into reality. However, the most important part of the process is you — we need your input to create something lasting for your love story.

The Archivist
Preserving memories one petal at a time
By Rebecca Voigt
WhenBrianne Janer launched Petal Archive in 2020, her floral preservation business had a much different focus.
“My older sister was getting married in 2019, and I wanted to create the perfect gift for her,” Janer says. “I made small resin keepsakes out of her flowers, and back then, I thought I did an amazing job. Let’s just say I should have practiced before I dove right in.”
Despite her humble beginning, over the years Janer perfected the art of preserving flowers in resin, creating everything from bookends to ring holders for her clients. But in late 2023 she started to experiment with pressed flowers, and now her sole focus is turning wedding and other special occasion florals into framed pieces of art to treasure for a lifetime.
“The main reason I switched from resin to pressed flower art was to avoid working with chemicals,” she says. “Resin can be a risk to your health if the proper PPE isn’t worn. Pressing flowers has been a breath of fresh air, and I’m so happy I can still preserve flowers in a cleaner, safer way.”
The process for creating these one-of-a-kind works of art starts on the wedding day.
“If you would like to preserve your flowers, try to keep your bouquet in water when not in use at the wedding,” Janer says. “That will really help prolong the life of your flowers, and they will still be in great shape by the time they get to your flower preservationist.”
After the wedding, the couple ships or drops off their bouquet at Janer’s Mid Michigan studio. From there, she starts the meticulous
pressing process. “Most flowers will be deconstructed and pressed petal by petal. Some flowers will be thinned out and pressed whole,” she says. “The tedious part about pressing is always changing out the papers in the press. If you miss one important day, you could accidentally ruin your flowers and they could mold or rot.” After about four weeks, the flowers are fully dry and ready for use.
“This is when the fun part starts,” Janer says. “I send the couple design displays with their flowers, and they can choose how it will look in their frame.”
Couples can choose a design created with just their flowers or they can include things like vows, invitations, charms, or the bouquet ribbon. Once the design is finalized, Janer carefully frames the delicate flowers and ships the final piece to the couple.
“I love how meaningful this is to people,” Janer says. “The flowers really do hold a lot of memories, and I’m so glad they can have a reminder of their special day in their home.”
Prices start at $100 for an 8” x 10” frame. To learn more visit petal-archive.com.
Busy Little Bee
A one-of-a-kind
mobile bar that gets the job done
By Rebecca Voigt
Scooter, truck, bar cart — Emily Haan’s Italianmade Piaggio Ape (pronounced ah-pay) goes by many names. Haan sourced the versatile vehicle from a California scooter shop in 2021, and after an extensive facelift, the Ape was transformed into a darling mobile bar — and The Third Wheel was born.
“I went to school for hospitality and tourism management and have always had a passion for events,” Haan says. “I knew I wanted to have my own business at some point, and that’s where The Third Wheel stemmed from.”
When the Ape arrived from California, Haan says it was “a white, rusty little truck with a horseshoe affixed to the backend.” But she knew it was perfect for her mobile bar concept. “Ape translates to ‘bee’ in Italian, and it’s known to be a ‘worker bee’ vehicle in Italy,” she says. “They’re able to fit through the narrow streets of Italy and carry heavy materials. What better for navigating venues, yards, and event spaces while serving all types of beverages?”
Alongside her husband, Brad, Haan transformed the rusty little worker bee into a chic, camera-ready
mobile bar with a sage green exterior, wood handled tap system, marble tile backsplash, and brass detailing. As a final touch, Haan worked with a local Detroit artist, Mark Serra, who hand painted the company’s logos using gold leaf.
Now entering its third season, the Ape — and two recently introduced standalone bars — can be found at weddings and events throughout the Metro Detroit area, serving everything from beer, wine, and cocktails to cold brew, kombucha, lemonade, and more on tap.
“Although it isn’t a classic bar service where we create cocktails onsite, I spend a lot of time up front discussing overall vision and experience to curate a custom menu for each event,” Haan says. “I’m here for the client and will meet their needs — from matching an overall color scheme to a specific alcohol preference, I love getting creative. I am always advocating for a fresh floral garnish or something fun.”

Where to Eat: Sheldon Chalet
What to Do: Glacier Spelunking
An intimate five-star lodge perched among some of Alaska’s most remote and breathtaking landscapes, Sheldon Chalet is the definition of Arctic luxury. Start your trip with a helicopter ride to the lodge — the only mode of transportation to access its remote setting in Denali National Park. The five-bedroom chalet includes a private chef and snow-fueled excursions, including glacier spelunking, backcountry skiing, and snowshoeing.

In the summer, 24 hours of daylight offer endless opportunities for exploring, dining, and hiking. Stay in an authentic Norwegian cabin at Reine Rorbuer Hotel in the heart of Norway’s most scenic landscape, dine over a candlelit dinner beneath the midnight sun, or hike among one of the area’s many breathtaking fjords

And, of course, one cannot stop by without visiting Bronner’s Christmas Wonderland, the world’s largest Christmas store. This year, the holiday festivities kick off on November 29.

Make a beautiful statement with these artful arrangements
“I believe it’s of the utmost importance that floral design reflects some element of seasonality,” says Jody Costello of J. Costello Designs. For this bold, bright centerpiece, Costello paired “highly unusual and exotic oncidium orchids and spidery gloriosa lily with the humble marigold, which is abundant in late summer and early fall in Michigan.”
Starting at $350, at J. Costello Designs, Royal Oak; 248.220.0649; jcostellofloral.com.
Café latte garden roses are the star of Sparrow Bloom’s lush, moody arrangement, which also includes locally grown dahlias, queen zinnias, willow, berries, smokebush, specialty mums, grasses for texture, sea star ferns, sedum, amaranth, and lisianthus. “Our inspiration came from our deep love for fall, our cutting garden, and our passion for incorporating foliage and textural elements into our designs,” say owners and best friends Kait Bibb and Becca Barnell.
Starting at $475, at Sparrow Bloom, Lansing; 517.798.4243; sparrowbloom.com.
From the peachy pink blown glass compote vase to the fruit itself, Erin Schoneman of Sage Green Flowers and Events found inspiration for this centerpiece in Pantone’s 2024 Color of the Year – Peach Fuzz. Peach zinnias, Queen Anne’s lace, garden hydrangea, peach garden roses, jewels of opar, orange marigolds, and green tomatoes on the vine were all harvested from Schoneman’s garden. “Why tomatoes? I thought their soft green color and shiny skin added such a playful and whimsical texture to the arrangement,” she says. She also wild sourced blooming mint and poke bush “because I always like to add elements from nature to my arrangements. This keeps things a little wild and unexpected.”
$125 to $250, at Sage Green Flowers and Events, Keego Harbor; 248.791.7104; sagegreenevents.com.
Kevin Miller of STEM Event Design used ranunculus, copper beech, smokebush, helleborus, kangaroo paw, explosion grass, and strawflower for this “moody, sophisticated, and interesting” centerpiece inspired by warm fall tones. “I liked the dark, sexy feel of it rather than the typical fall yellow, orange, red,” Miller says.
$265 to $345, at STEM Event Design, Rochester Hills; 586.321.7431; stemeventdesign.com.
“For this arrangement I was inspired by something that felt alternative but also the fall season,” says Rachel Chaffee of Eastern Floral. Chafee used “the warmth of the moab roses and salmon hanging amaranthus, frosted explosion grass, and globe thistle for that meadow-like, whimsical texture.” Mauve astrantia, lavender clematis, and plum scabiosa bring a moody pop of color to the centerpiece.
Starting at $275, at Eastern Floral, Grand Rapids; 616.949.2200; easternfloralweddings.com.
“We wanted to create something that was very rich in color, dramatic and asymmetrical,” says Elyse Riemersma of Posh Petals. To achieve that look, Riemersma combined cosmos, dahlias, silverberry, petunias, scabiosa, and zinnias.
Starting at $200, at Posh Petal, Grand Rapids; 616.363.3337; poshpetalsfloral.com.
Elegant and organic, this arrangement by Olive’s Bloombox Wedding & Events Director Lauren Brockmiller includes cosmos, tulips, garden roses, ranunculus, larkspur, dahlias, garden spray roses, lisianthus, hellebore, Italian pittosporum, ferns, and green spiked balloon flowers. “We’ve been getting a lot of ‘elegant cottage core’ requests so we leaned into that look a little bit while using some of our signature favorite florals from the market and local farmers,” Brockmiller says. “I made this piece keeping in mind that it could be used as a large entry way piece, alongside an escort card table, or even as a centerpiece with lots of moody lighting around. I feel like it would work well to enliven a darker space or bring a moody tone to a lighter, airy space.”
Starting at $225, at Olive’s Bloombox, Ferndale; 248.794.3652; olivesbloombox.com.
LOVE without Borders
A vibrant celebration joins two families’ unique cultural traditions together
By Angela Flynn | Photography by Cassidy Danae Photography
Kristen and Naag Piduru were united in marriage on a warm summer day at Zingerman’s Cornman Farms in Dexter on June 24, 2023. In doing so, they also united each of their families from two vastly different cultures that were separated by nearly 8,000 miles.
Kristen was born and raised in Ann Arbor — where she also returned to live after college at Michigan State University — while Naag was born in Hyderabad, India. Naag attended graduate school at Michigan Technological University in the Upper Peninsula but eventually ended up in Ann Arbor, where the couple met in 2017 while playing in a recreational basketball league.
“I didn’t have anything to do on Tuesdays after work, and he also was looking for something fun to do because he was looking to meet people, and we happened to get put on the same team,” Kristen says. “The league had finished, and he asked me out and we met for coffee.”
Naag popped the big question on the fifth anniversary of that first coffee date. “It was just a sweet, ‘at home’ proposal,” Kristen says. “He told me that he loved me and wanted to take the next step with me.”
Once they began planning for the wedding, they quickly realized that they had several big decisions to make, especially with families from two different
featured wedding
countries. Kristen’s family lives stateside while most of Naag’s family is in India.
“We decided that we wanted to have one wedding, versus doing something in America and doing something in India,” Kristen says. “We wanted to do something here and have it be representative of both of our backgrounds.”
Ensuring meaningful representation from each culture was critical, so to encompass the most important traditions, they turned to one another’s families. “From my culture, we chose what mattered the most to me and my family,” Kristen says. “In terms of pulling from his culture, some of the same thing, but also what mattered to
his parents the most. It was more his family determining what was important and what’s commonly done.”
Ultimately, to fit in the most significant elements of each culture, Kristen and Naag decided on two ceremonies and a reception for Saturday, as well as a welcome dinner the Friday before the wedding that included more Indian traditions.
For the Friday celebrations, they spoke with the Hindu priest and gave him a timeframe, and he provided recommendations on the most important traditions to include that evening — some of which involved getting a bit messy.
“On Friday, we had a lot of rice throwing, and there’s turmeric and lots of colors and powders, so we quickly got a little dirty,” Kristen says. “After that ceremony we needed to change. We wanted something festive, and that’s when I changed from the sari to the red langa.”
For the Saturday celebration, the couple had two ceremonies in the afternoon followed by a reception that contained a full buffet with classic Indian and American fare. “It was really fun to see our families try food from
the other side,” Kristen says. “It felt very accepting of both cultures.”
At the end of the day, Kristen and Naag had not only joined together in matrimony, but also joined their families’ unique cultural traditions. “My advice [for other couples] would be to not rush the process and really take the time to get to know what’s important to the other family,” Kristen says. “I feel like we took the time to learn the most important elements of each culture and how we could blend those together.”

Zingerman’s Cornman Farms
There’s something about Zingerman’s Cornman Farms — a multi-awardwinning, chef-led event space, wedding venue, and working farm in Dexter — that feels like home. Something warmly nostalgic. Maybe it’s the classic red barn, or the picture-perfect white farmhouse. Perhaps it’s the big maple trees, sunflowers, or sweeping lawn. Maybe it’s the smell of fresh-baked bread pudding wafting out of our farmhouse kitchen. What matters most is this: you’ll feel right at home here. What could be more important on your most special day?
Located on 27 beautiful acres, Zingerman’s Cornman Farms and its venues were restored from their 1834 foundations with the most discerning guests in mind. Featuring a beautiful exhibition kitchen, chef’s garden, a classic farmhouse, and four-season barn, guests can enjoy the beauty of the countryside just minutes from downtown Ann Arbor.
Our team will work with you to create a custom experience that’s perfectly suited to your vision. Cornman Farms offers inclusive wedding packages for intimate celebrations for four to 75 guests. We’re experts
at planning and hosting events of all kinds — especially if they involve gathering around fantastic, farm-to-table food. That’s exactly why Chef Kieron Hales reimagined this historic property as an event venue with an emphasis on excellent food. The way we see it, nothing brings a family, a team, or community together like good food.
Time and time again, we hear from people who celebrate with us that we come to feel like an extension of their family — and to us, there’s no greater compliment. After all, weddings and other momentous occasions are about family — the one you’re born into, the one you join by marriage, and the one you create for yourself. At Cornman Farms, we want to be more than the backdrop to your most important day. That’s why we put so much love and care into making your wedding perfect. We understand that the little details are what make your day distinctly, undeniably yours, so from the time you reach out to us through your event and beyond, we take the little things just as seriously as you do. We’ll take care of everything for your wedding, giving you the chance to relax and be fully present for every magical moment.

Our venue is different from the rest because we are a one-stop-shop for couples. CityFlatsHotel is a boutique hotel centrally located in downtown Grand Rapids, within walking distance of all the city’s most popular attractions. Our Ballroom Suite and hotel rooms are available for the wedding party to get ready in, while they enjoy in-house breakfast, lunch, or mimosas. We also have The Parlour @ CityFlatsHotel, our hair and makeup salon that specializes in bridal styling. Couples can have their ceremony in The Ballroom, head to Events @ CityFlatsHotel — our modern, smaller-sized venue — for cocktail hour, and then return to The Ballroom for the reception. Keeping guests in one location leaves more time for fun and less time spent traveling. Rehearsal dinner and postwedding brunches can also be arranged in-house.

Ceremony + Reception
You’re Finally Married!
So, how do you change your name?
Wondering how to change your name after the wedding?
Ready to start ordering ALL the things with your new monogram? The following step-by-step guide is intended to help you navigate getting your name changed here in Michigan. Our goal is for you to have this over and done with for good once you finish this list.
1PURCHASE CERTIFIED COPIES OF YOUR MARRIAGE LICENSE IN ADVANCE
These documents are the most important part; so important that you can’t move on to step two without them. Do this when you go to apply for your license.
2UPDATE YOUR SOCIAL SECURITY CARD
You can either apply for a new social security card by mail or in person at your local Social Security office. If you plan on going to the Social Security office in person, you can save yourself some time by filling out an application
online for a social security card in advance. While on their website, be sure to find out what documents you will need to bring with you.
3GET YOUR NEW DRIVER’S LICENSE
Updating your driver’s license with a new name must be done in person. In Michigan, you will need to have your name updated on your license and take a new photograph, as well as pay the renewal fee. Michigan’s Secretary of State offices accept appointments; you can make yours online. While you are on the site making your appointment, be sure to see which documents you will need to bring with you.
4GET A NEW PASSPORT + TRAVEL DOCUMENTS
Changing your name on your passport is considered a correction. If your passport was issued less than a year ago, you’ll be able to have the correction made without paying a fee. However, if you’ve had your current passport for a year or more, there will be a fee. While all passport changes must be applied for by mail, the U.S. Department of State has a convenient tool on their website that will help you fill out the change form. While you are on the site, be sure to see which documents you will need to send to the National Passport Processing Center.
5CHANGE THE NAME ON YOUR BANK ACCOUNTS
As soon as your identification has been updated with your new name, head to your local bank branch to update the information on your bank accounts. Note that most banks require that these changes be made in person. We recommend you call ahead to see which documents you will need to bring with you.
6CHANGE THE NAME ON YOUR CREDIT CARDS
The process for changing your name on your credit cards will vary by institution. Call your credit card company directly to see what their procedures are. You can usually find the customer service number on the back of your credit card.
7PROVIDE YOUR NEW NAME AND BANKING INFORMATION TO YOUR EMPLOYER
Now that your ID and bank accounts match, contact your company’s Human Resources office or payroll processor to provide your new information as soon as possible. This way your checks will be issued with the correct name, and direct deposits will be processed correctly and — most important — swiftly!
8UPDATE YOUR INSURANCE INFORMATION
Whether you’re combining insurance policies or are simply updating the information on your own policy, this is a major change you need to make as soon as possible to ensure you’re covered in the event of a claim. You will need a copy of your marriage license to move this along.
If you’re insured through your employer, go through human resources or the insurance representative to find the appropriate forms and contact information.
Planning to combine your coverage? Make these changes all at once. Marriage is considered a major life event, so you also have the opportunity to change your health care coverage — even if it isn’t an enrollment period. For auto and home insurance, adding an additional vehicle or a new home to your policy could result in some great savings if you combine multiple policies with the same company.
9UPDATE YOUR MORTGAGE, RENT, AND UTILITY COMPANIES
With your new name and new payment information in hand, it’s time to update the payment information for your mortgage or rent, and your utility companies. Most can be easily updated online in your account portal or on the phone, and should be as simple as typing in your new last name and entering your new credit card number or bank routing information.
10REVIEW YOUR CREDIT + DEBIT CARD STATEMENTS FOR AUTO-PAY ACCOUNTS
From Netflix and HBO to the hosting for your blog, we’ve all got smaller automatic payments that happen monthly that we can sometimes forget about. Look through a couple months of statements on all of your cards and accounts, keeping an eye out for payments that you’re making automatically. Log in to those accounts to make the change, then input your new credit card or banking information and update your billing information with your new name.

It’s happening! time to get your marriage license!
If you’re at this step, then you’re getting married REALLY soon — within 33 days to be exact, since that’s how long you’ll have once you apply for your marriage license! Here’s a step-by-step guide for getting your marriage license in the state of Michigan:
1SET DATE
Make sure you know your date before applying!
2 APPLY
You can apply online or in person. Contact information for every county clerk’s office in Michigan can be found by scanning the QR code below.
3 SECURITY NUMBERS
SOCIAL
You will need to provide social security numbers for both applicants. Applicants without a social security number must provide a legal explanation in person at the county clerk’s office.
4 PROOF OF AGE
Government-issued birth certificates and current driver’s licenses or state IDs (copies sufficient) are required for both applicants. Documents must be in English.
5 RESIDENCE
At least one applicant must be a resident of the county in which you are to be married. If both parties are from out of state, but getting married in Michigan, they must apply for their license in the county where their ceremony will take place. Proof of address is required with either a valid driver’s license or state ID.
6 FEE
The fee is $20 for Michigan residents and $30 for out-of-state applicants.
7 PICK UP
License must be picked up in person — with all required documents — at the county clerk’s office no sooner than 3 days after submitting your application.

endnote
“You are bound to have stressful moments during wedding planning, but do not let this ruin your engagement season. When the wedding details feel like too much, refocus and remind yourself that it is more important to nurture the foundation of your marriage during engagement as opposed to worrying about the details of your wedding day.”
— Emily Wentland, In The Details Weddings
