Summer is here!!! Let’s breakout the swimsuits and shorts. Light up the grills and get ready to enjoy some outdoor fun. I hope everyone had a great Independence Day celebrating our county’s heritage and freedom, that I hope we never take for granted. The 4th is such a great day to spend with family and friends doing those wonderful outdoor activities.

My favorite thing to do in the summer is go to the beach. I grew up on the Mississippi Gulf Coast and there is nothing I enjoy more than lying on the beach or going out on the water boating.

I think here in the south we have the best life. We get to enjoy the outdoors at least nine months of the year. Now, of course, northerners may be able to brag a few times a year about their beautifully mild temperatures, but I would not trade our seasons for their snowy blizzard winters for anything. I guess it is all in what you are used to, but I am a happy camper in the sunny south!

Melissa Ragas, APRN, CNM

Agena Obstetrics and Gynecology

Melissa’s path to becoming a certified nurse midwife is rooted in diverse experiences and a profound passion for maternal care. Graduating from Holy Cross College in 2009 with a bachelor of Science in nursing, she furthered her education at Frontier Nursing University with a Master’s degree as a Certified Nurse Midwife in 2017. “My inspiration to become a midwife came while working as a L&D/OB nurse at North Oaks in Hammond, where the phenomenal midwives and the childbirth experience deeply moved me. I felt like I found my calling. I truly love being a midwife. “

Practicing as a nurse midwife for almost seven years, she emphasizes the importance of compassion in her work. “Empathizing with patients strengthens trust and opens communication. I strive to make patients feel comfortable during visits and openly discuss all issues,” she notes.

Beyond clinical practice, Melissa is passionate about patient education and empowerment. Helping women of all ages navigate their life’s changes is fulfilling. Her advice to aspiring nurse midwives is heartfelt: “Commit to this path for the right reasons. It demands dedication and compassion, but the rewards are immeasurable. Balance between work and home life is crucial.”

Melissa grew up in Chalmette and now resides in Mandeville. In her free time, she enjoys yoga, crafting, traveling, and spending time with her family. “My five children—Ava, Skyla, Jaxson, Brittany, and Caden—and my fiancé Keith are my greatest support and motivation,” she says. “They inspire me to be a role model, especially during challenging times.”

Looking ahead, Melissa hopes to continue advocating for better maternal/women’s healthcare and envisions a future on the Northshore where midwives play an even more integral role.

Bye Bye Belly Fat!

As we age, stubborn belly fat tends to accumulate around the upper and lower abdomen. This visceral fat is tougher to shed than the soft, “pinch-an-inch” subcutaneous fat found around the hips or thighs. Besides being unsightly, visceral fat is DEADLY!

About 90% of body fat in most people is subcutaneous, located just beneath the skin. The remaining 10% is visceral fat, which lies deep beneath the firm abdominal wall, and surrounding organs like the liver and intestines. A hard, protruding belly is not muscle. It is dangerous fat that lies beneath the muscle of the abdominal wall. Fat cells are not dormant, but instead function as endocrine organs, secreting hormones and other molecules that can negatively affect other tissues.

Visceral fat contributes to heart disease, high blood pressure, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), asthma, fatty liver, gallbladder disease, diabetes, high triglycerides, low good HDL cholesterol, and inflammation, (known as metabolic syndrome X). It is also linked to dementia, Alzheimer's, breast cancer, and colon cancer. Visceral deep belly fat responds much better to diet and exercise than fat on the hips and thighs. This is beneficial because visceral fat is so dangerous to our health.

By decreasing lethal belly fat, you will regain your sexy look and healthy groove!

TIPS FOR REDUCING BELLY FAT

Bioidentical Hormones

Consult with a healthcare provider about bioidentical hormones, which can help balance your body's hormone levels, improve lean muscle, and reduce belly fat.

Exercise

A combination of aerobic activities like walking or biking, along with strength training (lifting weights), helps lose the most belly fat. Short on time? Walking with handheld weights is an excellent, efficient cheat!

Healthy Diet

- Eat high-soluble fiber foods (fruits, vegetables, legumes, oats, and barley).

- Consume high-protein foods such as fatty fish (salmon, mackerel, sardines, anchovies), lean meat, and beans. Medical-grade (GMP) Omega Fish Oil supplements can also help.

- Incorporate probiotic and prebiotic foods, like yogurt, kombucha, pickles, buttermilk, sauerkraut and tempeh. Also consider medical grade synbiotic supplements to improve gut health, eliminate leaky gut syndrome and decrease inflammation. High cortisol levels caused by inflammation can increase appetite and visceral fat storage.

Intermittent Fasting

Intermittent fasting targets visceral fat. Popular methods include 24-hour fasts once or twice a week, or daily 16-hour fasts with an 8-hour eating window (e.g., 12pm-6pm). Always consult your physician before starting an intermittent fasting regimen.

Green Tea

Drink Green Tea, which has caffeine and antioxidants that boost metabolism and aid in melting belly fat.

Get Adequate Sleep

A cold, dark, and quiet bedroom enhances sleep quality.

Alcohol Moderation

Moderate or eliminate alcohol intake. Heavy alcohol consumption significantly increases the risk of excess fat storage around the waist.

Stress Reduction

Stress causes a peak in cortisol. High cortisol levels increase appetite and abdominal fat storage. To reduce stress, incorporate yoga, meditation, exercise, and friendship/family time into your lifestyle to reduce stress.

Food Diary

Keep a food diary via a tracking app or a written journal to help with accountability and track your progress.

THINGS TO AVOID

Avoid Smoking And Vaping Avoid Trans Fats

Trans fats, or partially hydrogenated fats, are linked to inflammation, heart disease, insulin resistance, and abdominal fat gain. Use apps like the YUKA app to instantly check the quality of foods while shopping, or read ingredient labels carefully.

Eliminate Refined Carbohydrates

Eliminate refined carbohydrates and sugary beverages like sodas, sweet teas, fruit juices, and alcohol mixers. Opt for water with lime or lemon, or unsweetened iced tea instead.

As stated earlier, when we age, stubborn visceral belly fat accumulates around the abdomen and is tougher to shed than subcutaneous fat, posing serious health risks. Unlike the more common subcutaneous fat, visceral fat surrounds vital organs and acts as an endocrine organ, secreting harmful hormones and molecules. It contributes to numerous health issues, including heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers, but responds well to diet and exercise. Effective strategies to reduce belly fat include bioidentical hormones, a healthy diet, regular exercise, intermittent fasting, green tea consumption, adequate sleep, alcohol moderation, stress reduction, and maintaining a food diary.

Fashion and Smiles are Lamika’s Legacy

When Chris Sperling first met Lamika Downs, she was a young girl who had dreams of becoming a fashion model. Sadly, she was also a young girl who had recently been diagnosed with terminal brain cancer.

He set out to not let her illness steal her dream.

With the help of his family and future wife, Chris reached out to members of the fashion industry and by October of 2011, an exclusive fashion show had been curated for Lamika. Bravo’s Emmy Award-winning hit reality series Project Runway team heard about Lamika’s show and even sent a designer to Louisiana to get the aspiring mode’s measurements and design clothing for her to model.

“She owned the runway that night,” he said. “She was smiling from ear to ear.”

When she looked at Chris and told him that he had “made her dream come true,” he knew he had to try to do the same for other children facing medical challenges.

Lamika passed away two months later, but before then the Sperling and Downs families became fast friends. They celebrated each other’s birthdays together. The Downs family attended Chris’ mom’s retirement party. Chris attended Lamika’s 8th grade graduation. They even spent Thanksgiving together.

Now, Lamika’s legacy lives on through the non-profit organization Chris created called Hugs4Kids. Pediatric patients are the stars of the show during what are now annual fashion

shows in her honor. Over 150 children have been blessed to participate in the fashion shows that started at Children’s Hospital of New Orleans and are now held annually in Slidell with the help of Ochsner Health on the Northshore.

Doctors and nurses nominate patients who need a reason to smile. Chris says he’s proud that the show is open to children with any kind of ailment.

“Of course, we welcome children fighting cancer. We also welcome those suffering from migraines, diabetes or anything else,” he said. “Any child who deserves to smile.”

Hugs4Kids’ mission is simple yet profound: to bring smiles to the faces of children. The Sperlings profess that they understand the power of a smile. Smiles have the power to uplift spirits, inspire hope, and create lasting memories. By harnessing the generosity of the local community, the Sperlings strive to help put smiles on the faces of children who are facing difficult medical challenges. Fund-raisers, donations, sponsorships and community events help make it all possible.

The Sperlings invite others to join them on their meaningful journey, where every action taken is inspired by the indelible impression left by Lamika. Together, they hope to provide comfort, joy, and the realization of dreams for children when they need them most.

Jenifer Newton is no stranger to journeying. As a youth, her family moved often to accommodate her father’s career as a chemical engineer. “This helped me develop my people skills early,” recalls the new Louisiana transplant and co-owner/chief surgeon of South Paws Veterinary Surgical Specialists. Newton’s family landed in Georgia for her high school years and by 11th grade she started on the career path from which she never wavered. “I first thought I’d be an MD, but my initial medicine opportunity was a high school internship at a vet clinic. It flipped the switch for me. I knew that’s what I wanted to do, and I’ve been happily down that track ever since.”

Newton took that track to an elite career as she navigated through the University of Georgia’s vet program and an internship in Small Animal Medicine and Surgery; a residency in Small Animal Surgery at Ohio State, where she also received a Master’s in Veterinary Science; and ultimately, status as one of under 2000 Board Certified American College of Veterinary Surgeons in the US. Says the driven professional, “Once I had my first surgery class, I knew this was my calling. After getting into a top surgery program at Ohio State, it was important to me to complete all the rigorous board requirements and testing to make sure my patients got the best treatment.”

Although her university studies were paramount, Newton began fostering another lifelong passion at that time – college football. While she couldn’t quite play on the team, she played a vital support role as clarinetist in Georgia’s beloved Redcoat Marching Band. Coincidentally, a young man named Greg Noblin would be involved in another marching music organization, the Toledo Glassmen Drum and Bugle Corps. And while they didn’t meet during Newton's Ohio years, later in life they would go on to get married, have children and share a love of animals and college football fanaticism.

“Because we moved so much when I was a kid, I wanted my kids to grow up in just one hometown,”

AN INCREDIBLE JOURNEY

says Newton of their decision to settle in Atlanta. But after 24 years having practiced both as an owner and as Chief Surgeon there, and with twins Lily and Matt enrolled in Kennesaw State University, she felt able to pursue other opportunities and begin a new journey.

“When my practice was bought out by a large company, things changed for me. I felt stifled by their corporate model. The kids were settled at college – Matt takes after me with his love of science and is majoring in psychology, and Lily takes after Greg, a professional gallery represented visual artist, and is studying art herself. Because Greg can operate his art business from anywhere, when the opportunity at South Paws came along, we were happy to have a new adventure and move here. Along with settling in to our new house in Ponchatoula, we enjoy trying new restaurants and going to festivals, like the Strawberry Fest. It’s a great way to get to know the whole community.”

Newton says it’s very fulfilling to be able to put her heart back into her surgery practice, which gets referrals from general vet practices. ”I really enjoy all aspects of surgery including orthopedics, neurosurgery and soft tissue surgery. And just as important, I make myself available offering my pet owners very personalized service.

Sometimes in a referral practice, owners can feel like a number when they never interface with the surgeon. I go over the diagnosis, discuss all surgical and nonsurgical options and stay in contact throughout the process. I

personally call after surgery, review findings and explain aftercare, addressing any issues or concerns. I follow up the next day and make myself available, so they are comfortable when they take their loved family member home.”

Not only is the dedicated caregiver welcoming, but she’s also put a unique, animalinspired family touch on the clinic. “A main focus of Greg’s art is creating panels by incorporating wild and zoo animals into fantastical themeslike having a baby hippo carried by a hot air balloon floating across a landscape. I put his artwork up in my exam rooms, and they’re always a fun conversation starter. I’m science based, so I’m continually amazed by what Greg comes up with and what he finds inspiring.”

Especially because South Paws is referral based, it’s important to Newton to foster outreach and teamwork with general veterinary practices along with catering to her surgery patients. “Since I’ve been here, I’ve given continuing education classes sponsored by South Paws. I also do a Lunch and Learn series at vet offices where I bring in lunch and discuss topics like anesthesia during surgery, diagnosis of orthopedic conditions or other topics of their choosing. The idea is to act as a team and an extension of the general practice when they refer a case. It’s very important that we maintain an inclusive relationship with the primary vet because they are doing the comprehensive pet care. I’m very happy to become part of this community, to create new professional and personal relationships, and to enjoy where this new journey is taking me.

Shelter to Service

Helping People & Pups

Shawn Nettles and Miss B have a new “leash on life.” The two-time Iraqi tour Army veteran and the Rottweiler mix left emaciated and heartworm-riddled in a shelter are now an inseparable dynamic duo. “We go everywhere together,” said Nettles. “And there’s no doubt she steals the show every time we enter a home improvement store, grocery store or anywhere our adventures take us.”

A $10,000 grant from the Steel Mimosas women’s organization secured specialized training for the Northshore Humane Society’s (NHS) Shelter to Service program bringing much needed support to military and first responder veterans in the community. According to the U.S. Service Animals organization, the cost to adopt a service dog can range anywhere from $10,000-$60,000 through other agencies, programs and with private trainers. In partnership

with KPro K9 TRAINING and donations from individuals and community members, those who adopt through the NHS Shelter to Service program need only contribute $1000. When asked how many service dogs are needed in the U.S., the general response is that there are as many needed as can be trained.

When the opportunity to adopt Miss B arose, Nettles was on a wait list with another agency that could have taken up to 5 years. He said it was love at first sight when he and Miss B first met. “Don’t get me wrong. She’s not perfect,” he said. “But she’s perfect for me.”

Nettles suffers from PTSD and anxiety. He and Miss B trained together so she could become an official service animal. According to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), “Service animals are defined as dogs that are

Once a dog is identified with service potential, an applicant is matched according to his or her specialized needs. The two then undergo training together, guided by KPro K9’s certified trainers.

individually trained to do work or perform tasks for people with disabilities.”

NHS Business Development Director Megan Haggerty said it’s important to note that the shelter’s program is exclusively dedicated to service dogs, not medical support dogs or emotional support dogs. “We hand pick dogs in our shelter that exhibit the instinct to help,” she said. “They can’t detect blood sugar drops or oncoming seizures, for example. We focus on training behaviors that provide comfort through structure and presence.”

She went on to explain that the idea for the program came about when a shelter volunteer experienced an PTSD episode while in Kimber’s kennel. Kimber sensed that Lawrence “Otter” Obst was in distress and instinctively joined him in the back corner of the kennel to apply deep pressure compression on Obst while he crouched in the corner. “Kimber stayed perfectly still and applied pressure for 20 minutes until the episode subsided,” she said. “Needless to say that Otter and Kimber are still together to this day.”

There are now approximately 30 individuals on the waiting list for the NHS Shelter to Service program. Once a dog is identified with service potential, an applicant is matched according to his or her specialized needs. The two then undergo training together, guided by KPro K9’s certified trainers. Service dogs can be trained for such things as behavioral interrupt, positive pressure, crowd control and room checks.

Haggerty added that NHS also works with KPro K9 for obedience lessons for other pups in the shelter who aren’t necessarily going

to become service dogs. “We want to make sure even our ‘problem children’ can learn to be on their best behavior,” she said with a smile. “We’re so grateful for our partnership with KPro. They are phenomenal.”

Donations are the mainstay for the shelter and its Shelter to Service program. Groups like the Steel Mimosas, businesses and even individuals who make donations are vital to the society’s ability to change the lives of both people and pups in the community.

Cuisine & Cocktails

Strawberry Angel Food Cake

ANGEL FOOD CAKE

1 cup cake flour

1 1/2 cups granulated sugar, plus 2 tablespoons, divided

12 large egg whites, room temperature

1 1/2 teaspoons cream of tartar

1/4 teaspoon kosher salt

3/4 cup confectioners' sugar

1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract

1/2 teaspoon almond extract

CAKE FILLING

2 cups heavy cream

1 tablespoon confectioners' sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

12-16 ounces fresh strawberries

DIRECTIONS

1. Preheat oven to 375°F. Sift the cake flour and 3/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons of granulated sugar together; set aside. In a separate bowl, combine the vanilla and almond extracts; set aside.

2. Beat egg whites, cream of tartar, and salt until peaks form. Add the other 3/4 cup of sugar slowly, then beat on high until stiff peaks form. Remove bowl from mixer and fold in flour mixture in parts and extracts slowly. Make sure you fold in the sides and bottom of your mixing bowl.

3. Spoon batter into an angel food cake pan. Use a toothpick to remove any visible air pockets. Bake 30-35 minutes, or until top springs back when touched lightly with finger. Remove from oven and immediately invert pan onto a liquor bottle to cool completely.

4. To remove the cake from your pan, take a flat metal cake spatula and insert it perpendicular in up and down motions around the rim of the cake pan just to get the ‘crust’ away from the pan. Invert onto your serving plate, using a knife to remove the edges of the cake from the pan. Cut the cake into 3 layers.

5. Whip heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract. Spread each layer with whipped cream and top with sliced fresh strawberries. Top with even more whole strawberries and serve immediately.

Rosemary Clement

DANCING WITH GRACE

For Rosemary Clement, each day is another opportunity for sharing her “Joie de Vivre.” Through 92 years, her joy of living continues as a charming chronicle of her dancing with grace. Since her childhood in New Orleans, Rosemary Sires was surrounded by family, and as the youngest was doted on by her parents and older siblings where they enjoyed together all the celebrations in her community. Rosemary remembers Mardi Gras in the 1940s as a family affair, all dressed alike on Fat Tuesday for partying and parade watching “as clowns or rag dolls.” She recalls, “For our family, Mardi Gras was in our blood.”

Despite the festivities that prevailed throughout her childhood, and from earliest memories, Rosemary’s spirit was instilled with Christian values, especially service to others. At only ten years of age she joined others, like members of the Junior Red Cross, as a volunteer at the Charity Hospital in New Orleans rolling bandages for wounded soldiers during WW II.

Rosemary was introduced to ballet at an early age, and especially loved her classes in tap dancing and acrobatics. As a teenager, her father converted their garage into a dance studio, where Rosemary began teaching neighborhood girls all that she had learned and shared her love of performing with them. During those active teen years, Rosemary met the love of her life, her high-school sweetheart, Walter Clement III. They were married in 1949 and in 1955 made the move to live in Slidell, where together they raised their five children.

Before long, Rosemary opened Rosemary’s Dance Studio in Slidell. It became a community icon for

youngsters to learn not only the techniques of ballet, acrobatics and tap dancing with the discipline and rewards of hard work, but also to be introduced to the social graces.

Following the worldwide gymnastics craze from the 1972 Olympic Games, Rosemary created the Slidell Gymnastics Studio in 1974. Equipped with state-of-theart exercise apparatuses, Rosemary also hired certified instructors to train her students in competitive gymnastics.

Supported by her husband, while their family grew to include two sons and three daughters, Walter was by her side for each new venture and always attended her dance recitals. From the tranquil setting of moss laden cypress groves which surround their home on Bayou Bonfouca, as a family they enjoyed all the water activities their landscape afforded them. But Walter and Rosemary also discovered the world together on travels, including going to New York annually for taking in Broadway productions. One of Rosemary’s favorite memories from their travels was in the Holy Land while visiting Bethlehem at the Basilica of the Nativity, the spiritual experience of being at the birthplace of Jesus.

Blessed with 68 years of marriage to Walter, his passing in 2017 left Rosemary with their loving family and the treasures of lifelong memories from their adventures together. Her photo albums are filled with memories of their extraordinary experiences, like one of Rosemary riding on a camel, one from a visit to China, where Rosemary was photographed doing a handstand with the Great Wall as a backdrop!

Always active, Rosemary was the cover photo for Yada Yada Magazine, shown waterskiing at age 74. She has appeared in magazines and newspapers for her many endeavors, including as Louisiana’s Representative to the Senior MS. America competition in Las Vegas, Nevada, and as Captain of the Krewe of Slidellians for their

For most events in the Town of Slidell, whether civic, community, philanthropic or social, “Miss Rosemary”, as she is known affectionately by all, will be found front-and-center of the action. In 2018, Rosemary Clement was selected by the Slidell Rotary Club to receive their prestigious, “Service Above Self” Award. With her volunteers from the Slidell Women’s Civic Club, she regularly entertains residents at area Retirement Homes. Rosemary says, “I like to engage all the folks in our performances. We hand out Maracas so they can join in the rhythm of our dancing”, and whether they are dressed in Hula Skirts or Mardi Gras costumes, each visit brings joy to both audience and performers.

Rosemary’s “Rosie’s Build Program,” which began in 2016, has become an annual fun and fundraising venture benefiting Habitat for Humanity. Each lady pledges $500, then joins for one day in building a home for a perspective family. It’s an event that people look forward to each year in her Slidell Community, which kicks off with a Rosie’s Recruitment Party. This is Rosemary’s creative way for adding fun into fundraising. Each day begins for Rosemary with a

5:30 AM exercise program at a Slidell gym. That is followed by daily Mass at her Parish Church, Our Lady of Lourdes, where she remains active in numerous charitable works. Many days will find her enjoying a boat ride down the bayou with one of her daughters, and she still enjoys traveling, often joining with groups arranged through Ochsner’s Golden Opportunities Club. Her family has now grown to include 15 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. She still shares her love of reading to them from her favorite story, “The Fisherman’s Wife.” This beloved story, which is described as “a spiritual reflection of Personal Triumph, spirited with Laughter and Adventure,” sounds like a perfect metaphor for the extraordinary life and legacy of Rosemary Sires Clement.

Mayor of Slidell

I hope everyone is enjoying their summer!

So far, it's been a hot and busy in the City of Slidell.

We recently celebrated Independence Day with two big events, the Slidell Rotary Clubs’ Heritage Fest and the Olde Towne Merchant Association’s 4th of July Celebration. Both were great community celebrations with record attendance and the entertainment, food, and fireworks were enjoyed by all who attended!

The City of Slidell is planning another exciting season of events for the 20204/2025 cultural season, including Bayou Jam concerts in Heritage Park in the fall and spring, White Linen and Lagniappe and Arts Evening cultural events in Olde Towne Slidell, exhibits in the Slidell Cultural Center, Christmas Under the Stars and the Holiday Golf Cart Parade this holiday season. All of these events are free to the public. A list of all the events can be found in this issue, or you can visit the City of Slidell’s website at MySlidell.com to see the calendar of events.

We are in the middle of yet another hurricane season, and I continue to ask our citizens to be prepared, have a plan, and stay informed. Team Slidell is working hard to make sure that the city is prepared. We are continually checking all the choke points, clearing waterways, and making sure that our pumps are ready and working should we need to use them.

To keep our citizens informed, we will post emergency information on our city website at MySlidell.com and on the "City of Slidell, Louisiana" Facebook page (facebook.com/ cityofslidell). These sites can be accessed from virtually anywhere via cell phones, laptops or tablets. Even if you have to evacuate, you can still get continuous news and updates about Slidell.

The Struggle for Suffrage

Voices from Tangipahoa and St. Tammany Parishes

In the early 20th century, the women’s suffrage movement was gaining momentum across the United States. In Louisiana, this fight for the right to vote faced unique challenges and significant opposition. Yet, the determination of local women in Tangipahoa and St. Tammany Parishes played a crucial role in this historic movement. I am deeply moved by the resilience and strength of these women.

The push for women’s suffrage was often linked with abolition and temperance movements. Many feared that giving women the vote would lead to support for the abolition of slavery and the prohibition of alcohol—issues that were deeply divisive at the time. In the South, including Louisiana, there was a strong emphasis on states’ rights. Many opposed federal mandates on suffrage, fearing it would lead to broader federal interference, particularly regarding the voting rights of Black citizens. This fear was rooted in the desire to maintain local control and traditions.

Suffragists hoped that President Woodrow Wilson’s endorsement would lend greater legitimacy to their cause. Despite some progress, Louisiana did not ratify the 19th Amendment until June 11, 1970, long after it became law in 1920. The 1918 influenza epidemic, much like the recent COVID-19 pandemic, disrupted many activities, including voting. The epidemic played a significant role in delaying the progress of the suffrage movement as people were sick and unable to participate in the democratic process.

A prominent local suffragist and author of “Old Times In Dixie Land,” Caroline Merrick, from Tangipahoa Parish, was a

vocal advocate for women’s rights in Louisiana. Her work and writings provided a personal and powerful narrative that inspired many in the region. Kate Gordon, from St. Tammany Parish, was a leading figure in the suffrage movement. She focused on state rights and organized the Southern States Woman Suffrage Conference. Her efforts were crucial in building a cohesive strategy for suffrage in the South.

Women in Tangipahoa and St. Tammany Parishes formed local suffrage clubs, hosted educational forums, and extended their membership statewide to garner broader support. They wrote articles and letters to local newspapers, collaborated with statewide organizations, and lobbied for constitutional amendments to grant women the right to vote.

Despite significant challenges, the efforts of these women led to increased voter registration and participation

among women in their parishes. They established lasting organizations that continued to advocate for women’s rights long after the initial suffrage victory.

The stories of these women, marked by perseverance and community support, are echoed in the oral histories shared by their descendants and local residents. As someone who has called St. Tammany Parish home for many years, I am constantly inspired by the legacy of these trailblazing women and the vibrant community spirit that endures today.

The fight for women’s suffrage in Tangipahoa and St. Tammany Parishes was a microcosm of the broader struggle in the South and the United States. The efforts of women like Caroline Merrick and Kate Gordon laid the groundwork for future advancements in women’s rights. As we reflect on their contributions, we are reminded of the importance of continuing to preserve and honor these local histories.

Aw, YEA!

THE YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS ACADEMY

The Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) is a groundbreaking and exciting program that transforms local 6th – 12th grade students into real, confident entrepreneurs. During the 23-week program, the students create business ideas, conduct market research, write business plans, pitch to a panel of investors, and launch their very own companies. The YEA! Northshore chapter, founded by Shelby P. LaSalle Jr., 9 years ago, serves St. Tammany and Tangipahoa Parish.

The National program, founded 20 years ago at the University of Rochester, serves thousands of students across America. In 2011, the United States Chamber of Commerce and Campaign for Free Enterprise became a national sponsor and partner of the Academy. The program, in close cooperation with local colleges and universities, community and business leaders and their organizations,

delivers entrepreneurship education to young people in our community and across our nation.

YEA! is a life-changing program that positively impacts the entire community. From exciting local business guest lectures to dynamic field trips to local companies, students learn how to develop and run a real enterprise in a fun, projects-based approach. Each year, the culmination of the students’ work is a pitch to a panel of local business individuals who serve as the Investors. Similar to the television show, Shark Tank, the Investors award funds to each student; the funds are awarded solely for the purpose of the student launching their business. Based on the business concept and business plan, as well as the commitment to and energy of the student to their planned company, the Investors select one student from the class as the winning student. The student is awarded an all-expense-paid trip to Rochester, NY, to compete with other YEA! students from across the country in the National Finals, for cash prizes and college tuition to the Rochester Institute of Technology.

For the first time in the 9 years of the YEA! Northshore chapter, the Investor Panel was so impressed with the students of the 2023-2024 class that they selected a top student as well as a runner-up to represent the Chapter in the National Finals which was held on May 3, 2024. Savanah Babb was selected as the top student. Savanah just completed 11th grade at Covington High School and is CEO and founder of Cowboy Corner, a mobile western horse tack business. The runner-up student, Bella Cervantes, is from Tickfaw and just finished 6th grade through a homeschool program. Bella is the CEO of Bella Bead Co, a jewelry company that creates and sells high quality bracelets for all occasions and everyday wear. While the entire class, community and YEA! Northshore Chapter was thrilled with the awards, they were even more exuberant when, for the first time since our Northshore Chapter started, both of our winning students were invited to participate in the national competition in New York! Each of the national finalists did an outstanding job presenting to a panel of six judges in New York. Three of the 30 students who competed nationally were selected as top winners. One additional student was selected as the People’s Choice award. We are incredibly proud to announce that this year’s People Choice award winner was Bella Cervantes.

Applications for the 2024-2025 class are now being taken at yeanorthshore.org

A Positive Influence

How does a surfer who hails from Hammond become a social media influencer? Peighton Tubre laughs and explains that the summer she created her Instagram handle just happened to be the same summer her uncle taught her how to surf. “I was 11,” she says smiling. “I’ve kept it even though I realize there’s not much surfing to be had in Hammond or pretty much anywhere along the Gulf Coast.”

While her handle has remained the same, her social media reach continues to grow. At last count, she has earned more than 1.2 million followers across the main social media platforms for coverage of sports - including, of course, but not limited to surfing. Football has long been a favorite for the Tangipahoa native whose passion for filmmaking started at the age of two when she began drawing stop motion animation.

“Remember when you flip through the pages and it makes the drawings move?” she says. “My mom says that’s what I did until I learned that you could do hand-drawn animations on the computer and they’d come to life much faster.” Since then, there’s been no stopping her foray into filmmaking and content creation.

She auditioned for the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA) and began the media arts production track there in eighth grade. “We learned about everything from writing, directing, producing and pitching to editing and special effects,” she says.

Several short films earned praise at film festivals, but it was a 2016 tonguein-cheek parody of an Instagram couple that showed reality vs. Instagram that garnered her first 500,000 views. When TikTok came about in 2019, Peighton was attending Louisiana State University, which gave her plenty of football-centered content as the Tigers charged toward and captured the National Championship that year. Her posts caught the attention of the

Official LSU TikTok account. “It’s been crazy and exciting ever since. My accounts blew up and I was noticed by ESPN. LSU staff recommended me as a fantasy sports app digital media strategist and most recently I was asked to host the ‘red carpet’ at the NFL Draft in New York.”

Having been named a Top 5 NFL TikTok account influencer by Thrilllist, her statistics include 800+ million total views with 25+ million every month and 50+ million likes. Her list of sponsors includes such titans of industry as Amazon, CocaCola, Procter & Gamble and M&Ms, among many others. But back before the whirlwind began, some of her very first TikTok hits came from videos in which edits turned NFL players into superheroes. By the time she turned Lamar Jackson into Black Panther, Peighton had over 1 million views.

“It’s all about the aftereffects,” says the self-professed Harry Potter nerd with a filmmaker’s crush on Steven Spielberg. She says she enjoys the production and editing of the videos most. “Some influencers just set up their phone and just start talking. But that’s not me. I’m a perfectionist. I’m always thinking about which clip, which angle, what coloring and sound effects will work best. It’s a science to me.”

You may recognize some of the guests she’s had the pleasure of interviewing along the way: Brett Favre, Jordan Daniels and Peyton Manning to name a few. “Covering sports – especially in Louisiana – is all about telling stories. We have so many talented athletes who’ve overcome so much to play the games they love. Everyone loves an underdog, right?” she says.

When asked if she has any advice for aspiring social media influencers, she stresses the need for authenticity. “Finding something that you love is really important. It’s not just about following trends,” she says. “Trends will come and go but your true passions never change.”

Ozone 2024 Spring Sound-Off

Wine, Women, Greg & Song

The Northshore had an opportunity to hear an amazing show with music from Emmy winning, Grammy nominated singer-songwriter Greg Barnhill on June 7th, which included the talented lineup of Tiffany Pollack, Teena May, Mary Broussard, and Caroline Tebbs. Those attending got to hear fabulous music, and watch great camaraderie among all the performers. Stories and jokes were also a part of this fun, musical evening which included food and drink. This also marked the first occasion where the "rising stars" performing were all women!

Caroline Tebbs and Greg Barnhill were the participants in the first round of music. Greg played some of his best-known hits, which absolutely delighted the crowd! Caroline played

a series of original music that was extremely impressive, especially given her young age. She is definitely one to watch in the future! The second round included Teena May, Mary Broussard, and Tiffany Pollack. Each lady certainly has her own individual style, but the audience was all smiles as each performer “sang her heart out” for the crowd.

While the audience absolutely loved the music, they did really enjoy hearing stories about the lives of the performers, and how their songs came about. It was a very intimate setting where the audience had an opportunity to really get to know the performers during and after the show. It's not every night that you get to rub elbows with someone who has won multiple Emmys and has been nominated for a Grammy like Greg. But this St. Tammany native loves coming home to perform for some of his favorite people in the world. The ladies performing with him that evening could not have been more talented, fun, and entertaining. Once again, the Ozone Music Foundation had a great night promoting rising stars among our midst. It was a night that did not disappoint, and again furthers the goal of the foundation.

On May 31st of this year, we celebrated 25 years of Enterprising Women. Joanne Gallinghouse had a vision to uplift and celebrate the wonderful things that women in our community were doing. She purchased in 1993 Sophisticated Shopper, which had been in business since 1986. She then in 1999 turned it into Sophisticated Woman Magazine, Northshore’s Best and put out her first cover featuring Ann Jameson & Angele Darling, owners of Coffee Rani. And now here we are 25 years later, still carrying on her vision of celebrating and featuring amazing women in St. Tammany & Tangipahoa Parishes.

We had a dynamic speaker, Simone Bruni, a past cover also, who gave such a motiving speech called “Let not your heart be troubled, Let it Go!” She has such an inspiring story to tell, how she became successful, working against the odds. She was a woman, not only in a “man’s world”, but a woman in a man’s field with very few women, if any! Her story showed how perseverance can pay off, if you just do not give up and keep moving forward.

We also heard from Marie Rudd-Gregory from Brook It Forward Foundation. This is a non-profit that gives Birthday Boxes to abused, fostered, neglected and homeless children. She started this foundation in memory of her daughter, Brooke Posey, who died in tragic car accident. Brooke It Forward, was the non-profit that we chose to partner with at our Hats Off Luncheon and all proceeds from the silent auction went to this charity. The silent auction was very successful and raised $5,700 for the foundation.

The rest of the event was celebrating and honoring some of the past covers of our magazine. We had woman at the event going all the way back to our first cover. Here is a list of those that we were able to honor at the event:

Ann Jameson & Angele Darling-Coffee Rani-March/April 1999

Laurie McCants-Honda Of Covington-November 1999, August 2002, & October 2004

CJ Ladner-State Farm-January/February 2000

Jennifer Linn-South Paws Veterinary Sugical Specialist-August 2021

Heather Vinet-Scientifically Natural-February 2024

When you look at this list, it is an outstanding example of the talented and successful women in our area, but there are so many more out there that need to tell their stories of inspiration to the upcoming generation of woman to come, and that is what Sophisticated Woman Magazine will continue doing! Thanks to all that attended and helped us celebrate our 25th year! May God’s blessing be on each and every one of you! And ladies keep going and working to make our community a better place for all of us!
