twenty years OF THREE RIVERS!

WRITTEN BY ANNA LEDONNE PHOTOS BY TOM BALLANTINE

THE THREE RIVERS ART FESTIVAL has grown immensely over the past two decades and is projected to host more than 50,000 artists and art lovers from across the country during its 20th annual event. The sprawling affair has expanded from 49 artists in 1997 to 200–fulfilling its purpose of enhancing the arts community, attracting cultural tourists to the Northshore and supporting art education for students. “These artists are the best of the best,” says Sarada Bonnett, the festival’s director. “The festival committee has to turn away over half of the entrants in order to maintain its focus on high-quality, original fine arts and crafts.” This year’s festival won’t disappoint. As you stroll through the colorful tents lining Columbia Street, stop to visit the esteemed jewelers, woodworkers, painters and sculptors; and take advantage of the many opportunities to buy a unique gift. Listen to live music, check out the student art exhibition and bring the family for hands-on activities in the Children’s Discovery Area. Laugh and congregate with neighbors and visitors from across the country for an artfilled weekend you won’t soon forget!

An Artist’s Story–DS Reif WRITTEN BY GEORGE BONNETT

AUTUMN. THERE’S A CRISPNESS

in the air, even in south Louisiana, as tired trees lose grip of their summertime green, but in their exhaustion give way to beautiful shades of burnt orange and gold. Footballs spiral through the air, hoping to reach sure hands on their way to goal lines throughout our region. And a certain festival, with a most-certain significance to our household, gears up for artists, locals and tourists alike. This time of year, life in our house is different than it is in most others. My wife, Sarada, is the festival director, which means that, for the better part of three months, she’s completely insane. She takes calls from frantic artists, attends to the zillion details that need attending, and worries constantly about every facet of an event that is about to happen, whether everyone is ready for it or not. By Sunday on festival weekend she is mostly finished, and that is our time to breathe, to look around and to absorb the fruits of everyone’s hard work. We carpe the diem that day and leisurely walk the festival as patrons. It truly is my favorite part of the weekend, because we take the time to actually talk to the artists, get to know them. Last year, one artist stood out to us. As we stood in DS Reif’s booth, he told a

any previous symptoms I had a major heart attack. I pulled the truck over on South Range near the Pilot station. I could not breath, my wife called 911, and within minutes Denham Springs Fire and Rescue arrived. They somehow kept me alive until Acadian Ambulance came minutes later. I quit breathing and was taken to Ochsner Hospital a few miles away. Two days later, attended by CVT surgeons, I had bypass surgery. Meanwhile, the ambulance and hospital staff helped my anxious wife. We are

Now, the people in and near Baton Rouge are the ones who are in need. We pray that their kindness to others is repaid ten-fold. We pray that they receive the same comfort and help they have so willingly provided to others, even strangers. And we pray that this spirit of Louisiana will never, ever change story that brought tears to my wife’s eyes—not only because he had suffered a great illness just after the festival two years prior, but because he was shown that special kind of hospitality so unique to south Louisiana. Sarada asked him to write down what happened so we could share it with everyone this year. This is the story he told us. “I had a catastrophic medical emergency shortly after exhibiting at the Covington Three Rivers Art Festival in 2012. On the Monday subsequent to the show we went to Baton Rouge, parking our RV at Denham Springs. While driving on I-12 near our exit without

from the Missouri Ozarks and could not travel, however, a couple we knew in Baton Rouge offered to take us into their home for a month while I recovered. Others who we scarcely knew prayed for our well-being and recovery. When I say I have a special place in my heart for the good people of Louisiana I mean it.” Now, the people in and near Baton Rouge are the ones who are in need. We pray that their kindness to others is repaid ten-fold. We pray that they receive the same comfort and help they have so willingly provided to others, even strangers. And we pray that this spirit of Louisiana will never, ever change.

is not just your typical art festival. For twenty years, crowds have gathered during the second full weekend in November for a cornucopia of art ranging from metalwork to watercolor and everything in between. The festival unveils its grand scale as you stroll from booth to booth, block after block after block. Two hundred artists come from across the United States to feature their exquisite work in downtown Covington. This festival is of the quality you would expect in a mega-city like Dallas or Atlanta but it’s here in our backyard. I was just eleven years old when my mom first “volun-told” me to work the festival. All I could think of was how much I was missing that weekend with my friends. Man, was I wrong. I had the best time ever. I met people from places I had never even heard of and saw some amazing works of art. I’m not going to lie, I couldn’t wait until I could drive one of the golf carts, but there is fun to be had in every aspect of the festival. I’m eighteen now and encourage everyone, at any age, to get involved. You will learn a lot about art and meet some really cool people.

« Amusez-vous et dépenser beaucoup d’argent.» It means have fun and spend lots of money! Whether you catch me performing at the music stage on Sunday or just riding by on a golf cart, be sure to wave. Remember to get involved and most of all, have fun. Oh, and buy things…don’t forget to buy things!
