publisher's note
All Year Long Gratitude NOVEMBER IS THE
time of year to focus
on gratitude for our abundance with mindfulness practices such as journaling about the things for which we are thankful. A step further is to reach out to those who are less fortunate. Such charitable gestures as food bank donations, preparing for
The Northshore’s Best
Christmas giving to the underprivileged and volunteering at homeless shelters have also become admirable hallmarks of the season. For those already using this time for the betterment of self and others, kudos to you, and with the inspiration of this month’s Enterprising Woman, I’d like to challenge you to take your practices to the next level. Since childhood, Demo Diva Simone Bruni has lived a life of mindfulness and service all year and continually strives to reach new heights of altruism and spirituality. Especially after the year we’ve had, I hope you'll take to heart her message of bolstering resilience in our lives. Simone and I share the bond of having lived in Lakeview and being significantly affected by the devastating effects of Hurricane Katrina. Although we now make our homes on the Northshore, we are forever connected to that place where bonds, memories and lessons will always be felt in the heart. Learn of her ongoing dedication to New Orleans and her personal and business contributions that were born out of tragedy but have blossomed into the multi-dimensional operation of today. As so many of us enthusiastically anticipate the end of 2020, I know that as I reflect on the past year I will do my best not to dwell on the negative, but to truly appreciate how fortunate we are, to consider all the opportunities we have and to make a plan to purposefully pursue gratitude daily. More than that, I will strive to act on it in some small or large way, not when it is easy or convenient but every day. So for this month, as we finally begin year-end preparations, my wish for you and your family is a renewed sense of resilience and the power to find meaning and opportunity in your lives every day.

Sweet November
ovember is the perfect month to appreciate family as we prepare our tables for gatherings and feasts. In this issue, we provide ideas for holiday food and drink, along with inspiration for festive ways to present and serve all that homemade goodness. Nest Curated Home and Niche Modern Home graciously invited SW into their showrooms to share trendy and traditional offerings to spice up your home’s look. And with more and more loved ones reaching their golden years — St. Tammany’s population of people 65 years and older is approaching twenty percent — services and healthcare concerns are top of mind for seniors and their caregivers. On the Northshore, we are fortunate to have a wide range of quality options for those looking for communities that support happy and healthy lifestyles. State of the art facilities offer camaraderie, comfort and care like never before. The Trace, Park Provence and Beau Provence profile their offerings and amenities, from luxury surroundings and engaging activities for active residents to assisted options and memory care for those with increasing needs. Layton’s Family Pharmacy also outlines the services they offer seniors, caregivers and assisted living facilities along with personal service for the whole family. Dr. Michele Cooper offers advice on how to treat signs of aging without scarring through advances in technology. And regarding financial health, Christie Tournet busts myths about wills and estate planning to offer the peace of mind of early planning for later years. Along with reading the inspiring story of this month’s Enterprising Woman, Demo Diva Simone Bruni, explore more fun with holiday gift guides, our fashion feature on accessorizing your fall wadrobe, autumn gardening tips for the changing weather, news from the Northshore Humane society about our four-legged family members and small steps towards a return to normalcy with community happenings and events. That’s a lot to be thankful for!

Boots & Bags & Belts Oh My! ACCESSORIZE YOURSELF WITH all things Autumn, and add these perfectly pleasing picks to your wardrobe that will delight and excite. As cooler weather makes a comeback, let's take a look forward to the luxe looks that await us! With boots that command attention, bags and belts that exude style and elegance, these fabulous fall finds complete and define your sense of style. From oversized statement bags to structured silhouettes, the perfect bag is a must for daily distinction. Materials range from faux fur to reptile textures and smooth, sleek finishes. And absolutely—details matter, from metallic chains to chunky hardware, it's all about the bag. Tall or short, high-heels or low-heels, nothing says style like a fabulous pair of boots! Timeless and trendy all at the same time, lug soles are a comfortable, yet chic look that complements pants and skirts alike. Over-the-knee styles give an edge to elegance, and python and patent leather is about as rock star as it gets! And finally, go ahead and accent your assets, and add that finishing touch to any ensemble. Belt that blazer and cinch those sweaters. Bold, geometric metallic accents make any outfit elegantly waisted, and traditional looks never become boring with rich colors and sophisicated style. Make a statement, be it subtle or strong, but whatever you do, get out and enjoy the cooler temperatures of the season. Bags, boots and belts are key elements to this season's super chic styles. 14 Sophisticated Woman | November 2020

In 2005, on a Georgia Interstate, I was the victim of a hit-and-run driver. The accident itself was horrifying. The injuries were bad. The betrayal by my own insurance company was worse. I had a very hefty Uninsured Motorist Policy that would have provided money for the help I needed. Instead of being on my side, my own auto insurance company duped me into signing my rights away for a quick check .
Don't let this happen to you. Call me.

cover story
WRITTEN BY JAN WINDHORST PHOTOS BY STEVE RANDON
RESILIENCE IS THE
ability to recover from difficult experiences, to adapt, move forward and grow. One’s
resilience is said to be a product of personal history, environment and the circumstances of an event. While Hurricane Katrina is the definition of adversity for many New Orleanians including Simone, she demonstrates one of her strongest assets, mindfulness, in wanting to find meaning to see the will of God in seemingly chance occurrences to continually grow in purpose and service. As for her personal history, she is the older sister of two brothers who grew up in New Orleans East with a Brazilian father and New Orleanian mother, and attended Ursuline Academy. “My father grew up in rural Brazil’s farmlands but worked to become a doctor here. His being a minority gave me a different prism through which to see the world. The Ursuline Sisters, with their motto of Serviam, helped develop my moral compass and a mission of altruistic concern for others.” Of her role as a leader, a doer and an adventurer comfortable with being independent but dedicated to family, she says, “I get my strength from God and my parents, and I’m very grateful for my upbringing. The woman I’ve become at 48 is a tribute to them.” Famously known for the bright pink dumpsters and heavy equipment used in her demolition business, the savvy marketer didn’t set out to ascend in a traditionally male industry, but once there, brilliantly used her unique position as an advantage. “As a child I thought I might become a missionary or a nun. I wasn’t a tomboy, I painted my nails,” she laughs. And when she told her very role-traditional father her idea for the business after Katrina rendered her hospitality job moot, "He was totally against it. But people were in such desperation, I was compelled to use those skills and experience working at the Port of New Orleans to take on a dirty job and address the overwhelming need – despite happening to be female. I believe God uses our perceived weaknesses to make us strong.” Successful resiliency is also affected by managing one’s environment. Answering calls to service while attending Loyola University taught her to adapt to difficult surroundings with the courage and strength a purpose greater than oneself provides. Desire Street Ministries, a faith-based education program, had Simone tutoring Carver High School students in some of the city’s most challenging and potentially dangerous urban neighborhoods. Missionary work in a Guatemala orphanage reinforced the lesson of accepting what cannot be changed and focusing on what can be changed. And, ‘coincidentally’, while there she learned to speak Spanish fluently. “My faith armed me with zero fear of ministering to people in areas others were afraid to go. And speaking Portuguese and Spanish was instrumental in building my workforce after Katrina. I want to laud the contribution of immigrants, and the troops of Baptist Church volunteers in rebuilding New Orleans. Counter to my childhood ideas of having to travel the world to serve others, I believe my early experiences weren’t just coincidences but that God used them to strengthen and prepare me in many ways to be part of the rebuilding and alleviation of suffering right here at home.” If the ability to see opportunity in negative circumstances is an indicator of resiliency, Simone has certainly earned her title of Diva. But rather than only taking advantage of the post-Katrina situation, she remains for the long haul, once again interweaving lifelong passions—architecture and trees—into the task at hand of fostering renewal. First fascinated as a schoolchild by the magnificent, storied buildings of Ursuline, some of the oldest in the city where the sisters have consistently ministered during the hardest of times, she was inspired to diversify into a salvage business. Reclaimed Diva Millwork takes heart pine floor joists from old houses and transforms them into tongue and groove flooring and beams. Of her growing enterprise Simone says, “Whether it’s a pandemic, personal issues or business, we have to learn to pivot in order to succeed. There’s always something to salvage. To repurpose this antique wood, hundreds of years old, rather than discard it—this material that we can’t grow again in our lifetimes—was the right move for the company. It promotes sustainability, and it’s a beautiful metaphor about resiliency.” Simone quotes Psalm 1:3 regarding her kindred spirit with trees and her journey to resiliently live by their example—with grounding roots allowing her limbs to reach out, providing support, sustenance and relief for others. “She is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither—whatever they do prospers.” Simone Bruni is the owner of Demo Diva and Reclaimed Diva. DR. DANIELA EVERSGERD'S mission at Allure Dental is to redefine the dental experience and restore trust to patients with phobias. Dentistry runs in her bones and growing up in Brazil, Eversgerd saw plenty of smiles. Her mom is a pediatric dentist and an orthodontist, so she witnessed first hand how dental health can impact lives. Most visits to the dentist don’t involve a cozy blanket to snuggle up with, noise-canceling headphones, warm peppermint-scented towels and Netflix OnDemand. But then again, Dr. Eversgerd isn’t like most dentists. From the moment you step into Allure Dental’s boutique-like office, it’s evident that no detail has been overlooked. Custom designed chairs and a large chandelier greet patients in the waiting room, and luxurious leather chairs offer a comfortable visit in the exam rooms. Even the name of her practice was carefully crafted. “Allure means fascinating in French,” she explains. “We want our patients to have fascinating smiles.” Eversgerd ensures that her patients receive only the highest quality materials. “Whatever I put in their mouth is going to last a long time,” she said. Her office uses the latest technologies such as CAD-CAM crowns, soft tissue lasers, and digital imaging and x-rays. “My patients usually nap while I’m making their crowns,” she laughed. “They love it.” Patients who go through extensive treatments such as root canals and crowns are sent home with a batch of homemade soup. Even after 18 years, Eversgerd still loves being a dentist. “I love seeing families and people of all ages, from kids to the elderly,” she said. “I find joy in changing people’s lives.”

home feature WHAT SAYS ‘THE BIG EASY’ more than sitting amidst local artworks in the parlor of your Creolecottage-inspired home, cocktail in hand, planning your next culinary adventure while listening to some of the best martini music ever recorded? To Paula and Rich Adamcewicz, building their dream home to exemplify the lively local lifestyle hails their love of all things New Orleans more exuberantly than a Gallier Hall toast on Fat Tuesday. Always wanting to reside in the city, ‘one day’ became a reality when, on the way to their son Austin’s track meet at City Park, they spied a narrow lot perfectly proportioned for the shotgun-style, double-gallery cottage they had seen in Cottage Living Magazine years back. Fortuitously forward thinking, they had kept that issue as inspiration for the style that combines European and Caribbean influences and laid out the floor plan, only needing a draftsman to finalize their open-concept vision despite the narrow layout. As French influence dictates, the airy entry parlor is designed to be welcoming and relaxing. “We included three large windows for light and to allow the outdoor surroundings to be an element of the timeless, New Orleans style,” says Paula. “We love to sit in here with a glass of wine after a hard day’s work and forget our worries. This room was just made for cocktails and conversation.” Vivid greenery contrasts the light color scheme which includes a chic, antique chest and custom antique settees, newly covered in linen with embellished fabric by Patti and Courtney Brondum of Southern Luxe Interiors. The mother-daughter team was called in to coordinate and refresh the interior of the build that began approximately five years ago. Patti explains that both Rich and Paula work in the medical field and while both have excellent taste, they sometimes disagree. “We’re good mediators for them. We were able to do our thing during COVID while they were busy at work.” Patti continues that she and Courtney brightened the look with a light, soothing color palette and transitional style—classic with a little contemporary thrown in. The parlor also parades the Adamcewicz’s personal flair. Along with Lilly, their little Maltese who conveniently matches the décor, the couple enjoys the white, gold and grayish blues of Ali Giles’ abstract art; a mixed-medium, white crystal piece by Amber Ivy; a rug of rectangular, colored cowhide in shades of gray to ground the room; and Aiden Gray’s distressed wood and metal chandelier entitled “Italian Wedding” as the crowning piece. plank hardwood towards the kitchen, they’ll see an homage to the previous family home by artist Marc Hatfield and enter the realm of another of the couple’s passions—the local cuisine. Paula says that she and Rich embrace the area’s amenities by often walking to nearby restaurants and festivals, but with the pandemic, her husband has taken to cooking every day with the help of the commercial grade stove and full-sized refrigerator and freezer. The cooking area is open and follows the established light color scheme with white cabinetry, gold cup pulls and two windows flanking the stove for sunlight, countertops of Carrara marble and elongated, irregular subway tile. The artwork here, however, grows more vivid and takes on a festive music and seafood theme. A white and gold crawfish on gray by Brad Budge representing Paula’s favorite food gives way to a fish painting in pastel blues and greens acquired on a trip to Dubrovnik, Croatia. Sentimental value Jazz Fest posters add more color and bold design, but the big fish resides in the dining area and is a Martin Welch painting in gold and shades of deep, bright blue entitled Happy Tuna. Upstairs, the theme of color and materials

continues with Carrara tile, a white claw-foot bathtub and family heirloom accents, such as an antique table adorned with dragon heads in metal. Southern Luxe kept with soothing colors but suggested furnishings that take on a more contemporary feel, including a modern chandelier of hanging shells in the bathroom and gold-framed artwork in the bedroom. Amidst eclectic furniture and décor that all hold meaning, the item in the house that seems to garner the most affection is the parlor’s gold and mirrored bar cart. Perhaps, because it holds libations for which their beloved city is famous, and that help fuel lively conversations. Maybe, because it holds a photo of Dean Martin, the longstanding embodiment of good music and good times and Rich’s favorite crooner. (Paula explains that the small photo was a compromise, and that if Rich had his way, Dino’s likeness would take up a whole wall.) Most likely, it’s a favorite because it mirrors the spirit of the home’s design and reflects, both literally and figuratively, the motto of the city—Let the good times roll! Northshore’s Christmas Store
Common Estate Planning Myths—Busted! WRITTEN BY CHRISTIE TOURNET
WE ALL WORK
hard and desire to create a
better future for our family. But, have you made comments similar to the common myths below? Common Myth 1: I am not wealthy; so, I do not need an Estate Plan. For many, estate planning is not based solely on minimizing estate taxes. Rather, estate planning can: 1) insure you pass property to your intended beneficiaries (default law may not match your intentions), 2) alleviate burdens upon family members, and 3) appoint trustees and guardians for children or beneficiaries with special needs or concerns. Common Myth 2: I am young. I do not need an Estate Plan. Most often, younger parents are most in need of an estate plan. For example, an estate plan can take up issues such as guardianship of minor children in the event of a sole custody award, or a common accident involving the natural parents. And, parents can appoint someone to have oversight of a minor child’s inheritance. Common Myth 3: If I have passed, why should I care about what happens? Estate planning includes planning for long term care while you are living. Specifically, an accident or illness could impede your ability to handle normal affairs, such as paying bills, obtaining loans, and making healthcare decisions. And, without this proper planning, your family members could be forced to implement an interdiction proceeding, an expensive legal process where a judge must determine incapacity and appoint a formal guardian. Admittedly, estate planning can require you to consider some difficult scenarios. But, completing your estate plan and checking your beneficiary designations provide valuable peace of mind.

Treat The Signs Of Aging Without The Scars WRITTEN BY MICHELE COOPER, MD
ADVANCES IN TECHNOLOGY make this an exciting time for looking and feeling younger, while avoiding the scalpel. These services are cutting-edge and are creating a stir nationally. The first procedure, Morpheus 8, is performed in-office after topical numbing medicine is applied. The device is a small handpiece that oscillates needles into and out of the skin quickly, while delivering radiofrequency heating of the deeper layers of the skin resulting in increased collagen production. The RF heating causes skin contraction which sets this procedure apart. This is not a one and done procedure, usually requiring three treatments set three to four weeks apart. Redness is usually gone in 24-48 hours. The next three procedures are similar, but different hand pieces are used for different areas and levels of tightening or fat reduction needed. These devices are Accutite, Facetite, and Bodytite. These are minimally invasive and require numbing medicine to be injected into the skin, not just a topical treatment. The Bodytite and Facetite, may require mild sedation as well. Small cannulas are placed under the skin and RF heating is used to tighten the skin, and at higher energies, to melt fat. The recovery is quick compared to surgical procedures but does require a compression garment for two to three weeks. This method is used to lift and tighten areas like the lower eyelids, face and jowls, submental fat, lifting the neck, abdomen, arms, inner thighs, knees, hands, and labia. These procedures can treat signs of aging with no scars. They can also be used to make the scars for some procedures, like facelifts, shorter. The results have been better than I thought possible without a scar and I encourage you to find out what these devices can do for you.

THANKSGIVING IS A time for us to set aside our worries and take a moment to be grateful for all that we have. Regardless of what life throws our way, many of us are lucky enough to have food, water, shelter and all of the familiar comforts of our daily lives. When you and your loved ones gather together this year to eat and give thanks, please take a moment to remember the many animals in our community that are not so fortunate. Here at the Northshore Humane Society, we are saving more homeless cats and dogs than we ever have before. The cost to provide food, proper medical care, housing and more to all of our animals has a significant impact on our nonprofit organization.

Planting Flowering Shrubs In November WRITTEN BY SNOANN WILLETT, LOUISIANA MASTER GARDENER
JUST WHEN YOU thought gardening was over for the year, think again! November is an excellent time to plant a variety of greenery. Planting shrubs in November affords root systems to become fully established before summer’s heat. Nurseries are more quiet this time of year and staff can more readily answer questions. Thoroughly prepare the bed prior to planting. Set containers on top of the soil to ensure the proper spacing of all plants before digging. Dig a gently-sloped, cone-shaped hole slightly wider than the container and only deep enough so that the root ball top is either level with the soil surface or just below it. A hole exactly matching the container makes it more difficult for roots to spread out naturally. Firmly push soil with your hands around the root ball. Water thoroughly after all plants are set, and

Then there are florist types which are typically used as corsages, or arrangements, such as for All Saints Day, and meant to be recycled in your compost after the occasion. It's A New Day For Mandeville WRITTEN BY CLAY MADDEN, MAYOR OF MANDEVILLE
I AM TRULY blessed and honored to represent the great people of the City of Mandeville as their mayor. Having been in public service for the past eight years as a councilman, I am humbled to be in this new leadership position. It is a new day for Mandeville. I have several goals as mayor, but my first and most important is improving communications: good relationships start with good communications - with our citizens, our local businesses, our new city council, and our team of employees. I ran on a platform of “Lead By Listening.” As Anthony Robbins has said, “To effectively communicate, we must realize that we are all different in the way we perceive the world and use this understanding as our guide to our communications with others.” My hope going forward is that through effective communications we will be stronger as a team and will accomplish great things for our City. Having taken office on August 28th, two months late due to election schedule changes because of COVID-19, and with zero transition period, my term started out as a baptism by (rapid) fire of four tropical events---Laura, Sally, Beta and Delta. (Many thanks to our dedicated employees who are well versed in storm preparations and to Clarence Powe of the St. Tammany Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness for his assistance during this unprecedented time of weather events.) St. Tammany Corporation Honors Senator Sharon Hewitt as Champion of Economic Development with Recognition for Service to St. Tammany Parish Chris Masingill, St. Tammany Corporation CEO, is pleased to announce that St. Tammany Parish Development District, at its September Board of Commissioners meeting, honored Senator Sharon Hewitt as a St. Tammany Champion of Economic Development. The award recognizes her service to the parish during the 2020 First Extraordinary Legislative Session and the 2020 Regular Session. Senator Hewitt continues to provide ongoing support of resources and tools for business retention, expansion, and attraction at the state level, and champions sustainable economic development in St. Tammany Parish as a valued partner of St. Tammany Corporation. Her efforts to secure additional funding to local entities has also provided St. Tammany Corporation with critical resources to continue economic development activities while the local economy experiences ongoing effects and impacts of the pandemic. Says Hewitt, “I am humbled to be recognized by the St. Tammany Corporation for my support of economic development in our parish. Not only does a healthy economy generate tax revenue to fund needed services for our community, but it also creates jobs for our citizens that allow them to better provide for their families. I look forward to continuing to partner with St. Tammany Corporation to bring new opportunities to our parish.” “We are grateful to have Senator Hewitt representing our community in the state legislature. I sincerely appreciate her guidance, leadership, and sound advice as it relates to economic development priorities and initiatives,” said Masingill. “We started our St. Tammany Champions of Economic Development campaign in May 2019 to highlight the importance of economic development in St. Tammany and to honor public servants, business and community leaders who support job growth, wealth creation and the efforts of St. Tammany Corporation. Senator Hewitt is very deserving of this honor.” “Senator Hewitt is a leader in the state delegation who values the role of economic development at the local, regional, and state levels,” stated Marty Mayer, St. Tammany Parish Development District Board President. “She fosters collaboration amongst stakeholders and partners to build coalitions as a tireless leader in workforce development, talent retention, and STEM education.”
