publisher's note

The Best of the Season I LOVE THE

holidays! For me, that includes planning and decorating for family events, frantic deadlines at the magazine and last-minute shopping. As I get older though, I find that those things aren’t as important as they once were. The holidays are truly a time of giving and reflecting. It’s an opportunity to be grateful for all the wonderful things we have been blessed with over the past year, and look forward to good things to come in the new year. The holidays are also a time when we celebrate our children–their innocence, wonder and potential for the future. I invite you to read about our Enterprising Woman, Bri Steilberg, who has found her life’s purpose in nurturing and guiding children through her work at Kinder Haus Montessori. In this issue we also highlight the magical celebrations that St.Tammany has to offer for kids and kids-at-heart. The St. Tammany Tourist Commission has compiled a “nice” list of their own, featuring all the places Santa can be found on the Northshore along with other holiday festivities. As always, we have our annual Gift Guides from businesses in our community to help you shop for the perfect presents for loved ones. To add a little glitz and glam to your look for that special holiday gathering or New Year’s Eve party, check out our fashion spread with festive looks from local retailers. It’s always a priority of ours to support local businesses and bring you The Northshore’s Best. This year, we’re starting the party early with voting starting on December 2. We encourage you to learn more about some of last year’s winners starting on page 25. Visit sophisticatedwoman. com or our Facebook page to cast your vote for this year’s area favorites. Finally, I’d like to thank our community and loyal readers for your support over the last year. I am most thankful for the opportunity to take the reins of the magazine and continue the legacy that Joanne Gallinghouse envisioned over 30 years ago. From our family at Sophisticated Woman Magazine, we wish you the best. May the holiday season fill your home with joy, your heart with love, and your life with laughter.

The Northshore’s Best

Holidays can be the most wonderful time of the year—the gift giving, the parties, the family gatherings, the decorating and of course, the shopping. It can also be a stressful time for many—the rushing around, financial concerns, missing loved ones and other holiday pressures. At Sophisticated Woman, we want to help put a smile on your face and ease your holiday stress. From our holiday gift guides and cocktail recipes to glitz and glam fashions, we hope we can make your season a little brighter and bring some cheer to your holidays!

Santa Makes His Presence Known on the Northshore WRITTEN BY JYL BENSON PHOTO BY BOB GILBOY, LOUISIANANORTHSHORE.COM

IN THESE PARTS Santa has been known to travel via pirogue pulled by a troupe of friendly alligators. When his watercraft pulls up to the banks of Lake Pontchartrain to visit the Northshore, he makes a big splash. Santa’s initial stop on the Northshore is on December 7, first in Madisonville for Merry Madisonville and then Mandeville, by boat, for the Winter on the Water boat parade. He also makes a grand entrance via horse and buggy on December 14 at the Folsom Horse and Wagon Christmas Parade and in Lacombe for Lacombe’s Christmas Celebration. Holiday strollers will revel in the holiday spirit as they meander through the streets of Old Mandeville at the lakefront town's annual Sips of the Season on December 6. The event is modeled after the German Christkindlmarkt tradition in which revelers wandered the town squares with mugs of warm, spiced wine called gluhwein. Purchase a mug in advance (they sell out quickly) at participating shops and join in the fun. Shoppers enjoy special sales, warm cider and signature spirits from our local shopkeepers. On December 8, Covington Heritage Foundation presents its History and Holly Home Tour with wine tasting along the pedestrian-friendly tour, holiday music, and festively adorned homes in a quaint Covington neighborhood. Join Santa on a visit to yesteryear on December 14 as you wind through the leafy streets of Old Mandeville enjoying carols sung by local musicians and choirs enlivening the spirit for the city's annual "A Christmas Past" Festival. An old-fashioned holiday atmosphere sets the backdrop for offerings of arts and crafts, jewelry, seasonal food and beverages, a Children's Village, and train rides. Enjoy Teatime with Santa at the Southern Hotel, The English Tea Room, or Maison Lafitte. Enjoy a holiday feast, holiday craftmaking, cookie decorating, visits with Santa and train rides as you support the Youth Service Bureau at Your Santa Breakfast. You can also catch up with Santa over story readings and hot chocolate at the Cajun Christmas at Big Branch, or meet the jolly elf and his reindeer while you dine at Annadele’s Plantation Restaurant’s Reindeer Romp. St. Tammany lights up the parish with more than the shimmer of twinkling lights sprinkled along the streets, Tammany Trace trailheads, and parks of St. Tammany Parish. Bring the entire family to Covington Trailhead to experience the magic of Christmas with Candlelight Caroling on December 13 and Deck the Rails on December 14. And for spectacular light displays, attend Deck the Park with Pyrotechnics at Coquille Parks & Recreation on December 21. You'll find lots of family fun in Olde Towne Slidell with Slidell's Bayou Christmas in Heritage Park December 18-23, including a free Christmas movie screening on December 20, and the Krewe of Kringle Community Parade on December 7. This old-fashioned Christmas parade delights with decorated golf carts, holiday costumes and Santa and Mrs. Claus, as it winds from City Hall to Griffith Park for the annual lighting of the Christmas tree and Christmas Under the Stars. Comfort & Joy H O M E D E CO R F O R T H E H O L I DAY S WHETHER YOU’RE CELEBRATING an oh-so-holy night, rockin’ around the Christmas tree, or lighting candles for a Happy Hanukkah or Joyous Kwanzaa, decorations can play in important role in symbolizing the meaning of the holidays. And, of course, they brighten our living spaces and delight us with their beauty and light. Gathering around the tree or the table always creates special memories. From sleek to rustic to traditional and everything in between, the creative ways to dress any area of your home are unlimited. Christmas trees aren’t just for living rooms anymore. Some folks have a tree in every room—from the bedroom to the kitchen—showcasing different themes in each location. Metallics, pastels, rustic, all white, Victorian or vivid color stories are some of the many ways to reflect your personal style. Express yourself and enjoy the art of decorating.

home decor

As far back as the ancient Egyptians, people decorated their homes with evergreens in the winter to symbolize everlasting life and as a hopeful good omen for a fruitful spring. Today, greenery is still a mainstay of holiday decorating across all styles. The upside-down Christmas tree is reported to have been introduced by St. Bonafice of Devonshire in the 7th century to symbolize the holy trinity and indicate its meaning as a Christian symbol, rather than simply a floral decoration. Today, the inverted position is admired for its flair, unique creativity and floating quality. Many sources attribute the origins of the modern Christmas tree to 16th-century Germany and credit its North American debut to Hessian General Riedesel and his wife at their 1781 Christmas party in Quebec, Canada. In the past two centuries after the trend migrated into the United States, holiday decorations have fallen far from the tree. They have now grown to include all colors, shapes, sizes and themes. Rustic touches with modern influences create a comfortable and cozy, yet contemporary, feel. From warm copper tableware and touches of gold, to distressed paint finishes and accents of greenery, showcasing your own personal style is what’s on trend for this season. Mix textures. Mix finishes. Pick a color theme. Pick an accent piece. It’s all about adding your unique touch. Create memories and celebrate with friends and family this season as you make your surroundings special.

The Path that Leads to the Future

cover story

WRITTEN BY JAN WINDHORST PHOTOS BY STEVE RANDON

“I LOVE MONTESSORI,” says Steilberg, “but I didn’t see it as a long-term goal for me until I fully experienced how life-changing this kind of early education can be.” Steilberg started with Kinder Haus in 2013 as a part-time floater between the office and the classroom when her first child was just six months old. She’s spent the last six years embracing their learning philosophy while rising to assistant director and then co-director. “I wanted to work in an environment conducive to raising a family. I learned that Montessori teaches children to be independent and kind. It helps develop the emotional side rather than just teach the ABCs. More and more research shows that the most important developmental years are between birth and six years old, so I feel I’m not only taking care of my own children, but also doing important work out in the world.” Steilberg attributes her passion for children to her mother. “Although her passing last year was very difficult for me, I carry my mom with me in everything I do. Her love for kids, especially her grandchildren, is a huge influence on what I do for this school. She was very nurturing, loved the outdoors and actively supported our mission here, so we dedicated ‘Bubbe’s Garden’ to her out in the front.” “My role is to facilitate the family of wonderful women who work here and to broaden our reach into the community,” says the magnetic extrovert. As Steilberg hosts a tour of the indoor and outdoor learning areas, small groups of engaged, outgoing children interact with what Montessori calls their guides. “We work well together, motivate and love each other, and go above and beyond to bring out the best in our children. We integrate parents’ talents for enrichment too. For example, there’s a dad who comes in and delights us all with his music. We also offer parenting classes not only here, but at the Parenting Center in Covington too.” Lisa Erickson, Kinder Haus’ co-director of 19 years, knew Steilberg was special from her start at the school. “I’ve worked with others, but even as Bri was just beginning, there was something about her care and attention that was special. As her passion for Montessori grew, she developed a vision to expand the school to fill a community need for nurturing infant care. She is a risk-taker and our guiding force going into the future with a bottom line of what’s best for the children.” Even as a child, Steilberg says she pushed her limits and credits her father with encouraging her entrepreneurial spirit. “My dad, Glenn Gaethe, is a business owner and my role model. It was a risk to take over Kinder Haus, but he always made me go further than I thought I could go, and it has turned out great. Now it’s time for the next step.” In January of 2020, Steilberg’s newest vision for Kinder Haus is coming to fruition. “We’ve renovated the old Waffle House building not very far from here for our new infant facility. It’s been a lot of hard work, but I’m young, passionate and energetic, and I know that serving this age group is important to the Montessori philosophy.” Taking care of the people who take care of the kids is what Steilberg considers her most important job. “Lisa and I have worked together to build a great staff. It’s so much more than a preschool. Our team is so invested in the future we’re trying to create – teaching life skills and emotional health at the youngest of ages. It’s my personal mission to emphasize the importance of early childhood education as the key to the betterment of our society. We do that by looking to the child to understand the nurturing they need and give individualized help, attention and guidance.” Steilberg’s own family is also flourishing under her vibrant care. Happily married for five years, she and husband, Robert, share three unique and special children; Alex-two, Noah-four, and Gabriellesix. She says Robert is her perfect other half. “Without him, none of this would be possible. He’s an involved and equal partner that is engaged with his children at all times. He supports my dreams, is always encouraging and handy enough to do any project I throw his way.” Although the path she is following might be one she didn’t expect, it has led to her life’s mission of nurturing children and provides her own children with the individualized care that each needs. As her journey unfolds, she is rising to its challenges, embracing her community and changing lives along the way. Kinder Haus Montessori is located at 252 Magnolia Street in Mandeville. The Kinder Haus Nido School will open in January 2020 at 430 N. Causeway Boulevard in Mandeville. For more information, call 985-674-9303 or visit kinderhausmontessori.com. There is a reason their margaritas were voted Northshore’s Best and it's because they use the freshest, handpressed juices and the right balance of quality ingredients to make their “Chingona.” Lugo invites you to come in for daily food and drink specials, signature tacos and house specialties—and leave as one of the family. Habanero's has a new location coming soon to Madisonville!

What was a small, hidden gem is now a thriving 90-seat seafood market and restaurant. With a reputation for fresh, well-priced seafood, Jerry and Becky Caillouet strive to be the best and their loyal following is proof. They use as many local vendors as possible and the majority of their seafood comes directly from the Gulf. Customer favorites are thin-cut fried catfish and boiled shrimp. The Caillouet’s recipe for success is catering to their crowd, and they plan on keeping that on the menu.

Habanero's Urban Cuisine is located at 69305 Highway 21 and 1331 N. Highway 190 in Covington. For more information, call 985-871-8760 or 985-900-2124, or visit habaneroscuisine.com.

Fear-Free Dental Care WRITTEN BY CHANTAL CAUSIN, DDS

LET’S FACE IT,

no one looks forward to going

to the dentist, but most people need dental work at some point in their lives. According to the American Dental Association (ADA), only about 50% of the population visits the dentist regularly, (defined as once a year). Although regular dental exams and good oral hygiene can prevent most dental disease, many people don’t go due to fear, a bad childhood experience or only because they were in pain. Today, with the many advancements in dentistry and technology, there’s no reason to fear the dental office. With the recent links between dental diseases and other health issues such as heart disease and Alzheimers, it’s even more important to visit the dentist for overall health. Dentistry has shifted from being reactive to being proactive with patient education and preventative measures. Many dental offices now have digital x-rays which are quicker, use less radiation and allow the dental team to see

A NEW APP, called

OffenderWatch Safe Virtual Neighborhood, alerts parents if a registered sex

offender contacts their child. The app is the product of efforts by OffenderWatch and Louisiana state law enforcement officials. Federal law requires registered sex offenders to provide law enforcement with their phone number, email and address. The app uses law enforcement’s database to alert parents if a registered sex offender contacts their child. After a parent signs up online and downloads the app onto their and their child’s phone, the parent will be alerted if a registered sex offender contacts their child, or if the child spends time in the vicinity of a sex offender’s home. To do this, the app looks at the child’s emails, texts, Snapchat, phone logs, and GPS location. Children are spending more time online and so are sexual predators looking for victims. According to the Crimes Against Children Research Center, 20% of children received unwanted sexual solicitation online. The app’s creators hope to prevent the escalation from online contact to online

For the comfort of the patient, relatively painless injection techniques and strong numbing gel are also offered. Other options for the fearful patient are nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and other forms of oral sedation or IV sedation that induces a twilight-like sleep. Some offices have noise cancelling headphones or movies to distract from the procedures. If it’s been a while, research your local dentist. You may be pleasantly surprised at how things have advanced in just the last few years.

If your child is contacted by a registered sex offender, report it to your local police. Learn more about the app by visiting www.offenderwatch.com/safe-virtual-neighborhood/. If you’d like to learn about other forms of sexual assault prevention, you can follow OffenderWatch’s non-profit branch, OffenderWatch Initiative on Facebook or online at offenderwatchinitiative.org. There you can download educational coloring pages, learn how to speak to your kids about sexual assault and look up the sex offenders in your neighborhood. 28 Sophisticated Woman | December 2019

Dr. Ann Conn: Uniquely Qualified to Deliver Pain Relief DR. ANN CONN is a native of St. Tammany Parish and has been

practicing pain management here for 15 years. Conn is unique in that she is triple Board Certified in Interventional Pain, Headache Medicine and Neurology. Of her mission she says, “My primary goal is to provide comprehensive, state-of-the-art care in an environment of comfortable compassion. An important role I play in the care of patients — particularly during the ongoing opioid crisis — is to treat those with a history of addiction and pain issues. It’s important to understand that my treatments include procedures, medications and complementary therapies with minimal or no opioids.” As one of the team of multidisciplinary experts at Advanced Pain Institute, Dr. Conn practices in an elite group where everyone is Board Certified and fellowship trained. “Advanced Pain Institute is people focused. We understand the impact pain can have on your life physically, mentally and spiritually and are ready to help with compassion and top levels of expertise. We show our clients that it’s not necessary to live with ongoing, fatiguing pain and are committed to bringing relief to those who feel their condition has lowered their quality of life.” Of particular interest to Dr. Conn in her practice are acute and chronic spinal pain and neck issues that cause headaches. Complementary medicine treatments include cognitive behavioral therapy, biofeedback and other therapies. “People come in for both injuries and long-term wear and tear such as degenerative issues from

conditions like arthritis. Treatment is done with office visits and outpatient procedures. I do advanced pain procedures using high frequency spinal cord stimulation and use a new device to train people to do biofeedback at home. Biofeedback helps calm down the nervous system to decrease chronic pain and the anxiety that can accompany it. Conn credits having a scientific mind and an orientation towards service as her motivation for becoming a doctor. “I got interested in pain management in medical school and it’s just grown over the years.” Conn is a lifelong learner and is constantly pursuing knowledge and excellence. She received a BS in Chemical Engineering, attended LSU Medical School in New Orleans, trained in Neurology at Charity Hospital, completed her fellowship at LSU Medical School, and is an Assistant Clinic Professor in the LSU Anesthesia Department. She is published in the New England Journal of Medicine and the Pain Physician Journal where she serves on the editorial board. In From The Cold WRITTEN BY ALEXANDRA COOGAN, NORTHSHORE HUMANE SOCIETY

THE COLD, WINTER months can be brutal for the animals of Northshore Humane Society. Not only are there fewer volunteers and donations, but there are far less adoptions at this time of year as well. While our animal care staff does everything they can to prepare our pets for the icy weather, they cannot give them the one thing they desperately need— your love. Extra blankets and toys are passed out and their outside kennel doors are closed so they may sleep in the heated building, but all they truly want is a soft, warm place to call home for the holidays. Most dogs, especially our southern pups, are not biologically able to withstand the extreme cold of winter. Winter can even exacerbate existing medical issues such as arthritis, so be sure to get a check-up annually. Most importantly, remember that dogs and cats are social by nature. They truly thrive in a home environment, surrounded by a family. If you are looking for an addition to your family this winter, come see the wonderful dogs and cats just waiting to meet you! We’ve even got the perfect mega adoption event for you to do just that. Saturday, December 7, from 10 am to 3 pm,

VA Aid and Assistance Benefit WRITTEN BY DOUG SUNSERI

ONE OF THE

greatest secrets regarding aging

veterans in financial need is the “VA Aid and Attendance” benefit for veterans. Unfortunately, only two to five percent of our aging veterans apply for this benefit. “Aid and Attendance” is an

meet the following criteria: military service during

daily living activities on a permanent basis. To qualify, a veteran or spouse will need to wartime; a non-service, medical condition causing the need for assistance with daily activities; and a net worth of less than $123,600, not counting primary residence and auto.

One day of service during wartime is necessary, but the veteran need not have served in combat or overseas. Eligible veterans do not need to have a disability connected to their military service. The veteran need only show that they are in a nursing home or that they meet the criteria for aid and attendance: unable to dress, undress or clean; need for help with prosthetic or orthopedic appliances; unable to eat without help; and physical or mental incapacity. The benefit for VA Aid and Attendance is as follows: • Surviving Spouse: $1,209 monthly | $14,507 annually • Single Veteran: $1,881 monthly | $22,577 annually • Married Veteran: $2,230 monthly | $26,766 annually • Two Veterans, Married: $2,984 monthly $35,813 Annually Tax Free If the veteran's net worth is higher than the allowed $123,600, it’s suggested that the veteran meet with an attorney to help improve their odds of receiving the pension.

their transition. Many times, they must “downsize” their belongings and sometimes are only allowed to bring a few personal items. Creating a plan for what they take and don’t take can be an emotional task, but here are a few tips that may help. • Know what types of things are permitted. • Know the space of the new “home.” • Sort items into 3 categories: Keep, Donate, Remove. Use different color post-it notes to sort items into the three categories, and give yourself a deadline and stick to it. Create some rules. For example, you can only change categories once. If you originally wanted to donate it but now a relative wants it, it’s theirs—no givebacks. Define what the categories mean for you. Keep- Keep doesn’t have to mean keep on-site. It can put into storage or given to a family member. Donate- There are always the “Big” non-profits, but many local non-profits need items too. With a little research, you can find a great place for your loved ones cherished belongings. Remove- Yard sales and Estate sales are always a great option. With some planning, you can have a great event. If items don’t sell, you can always get support through a “junk” removal company. Aimee Flowers is the owner of Home Beautiful Solutions, a full-service junk removal and professional organizing company serving the Northshore and the Greater New Orleans area.
