Cards & Chocolates & Flowers...Oh My! WRITTEN BY JAN WINDHORST
ABOUT 55% OF AMERICANS celebrated Valentine’s Day last year and spent over $19.6 billion. This trend is likely to show an upward swing in 2020. Here are some fun facts about the day that was traditionally dedicated to lovers but has increasingly grown to include expressions of love to family members, close friends and special relationships such as with teachers and healthcare providers.
Cards are the most popular token Americans send about 190 million Valentine’s Day cards each year, which makes it the second biggest greeting card holiday after Christmas! In 2020 the spend is expected to be $1.3 billion or more. Hallmark produced their first Valentine’s card in 1913 and sending one still stands as the hallmark of the day.
Chocolates are highly desired Americans spend around $1.8 billion on candy alone on Valentine’s Day and with an estimated 94% of people saying they’d like to receive chocolate, it promises to keep its crown as the day’s most popular gift.
Flowers are a sentimental favorite Flowers, especially red roses, are synonymous with the day of love adding richness and romance. It’s expected that people may spend $2 billion on blossoms to celebrate on Valentine’s Day this year.
Jewelry and Diamonds are forever Jewelry ranks high on the list of popular Valentine gifts this year as well with nearly 6 million couples expected to get engaged on Valentine’s Day. Gifts for mom with jewels representing her children are also popular.
Pets are likely to get the best gifts this year The lucky pets with millennial parents are likely to be included in the day. Millennials are expected to spend more money on their pets than on their friends or family. Americans may spend nearly $880 million on pet supplies and gifts for their furry family members this year.
Food for thought Nearly $3.5 billion will be spent on a romantic dinner or night out with the family. Italian and French cuisine tops the list on Valentine’s night but steak, seafood and American fare are popular also.

Roses are Red...and Yellow and Pink So many roses and so many colors! Have you ever wondered about the meaning and significance of roses? Here's some fun insight into their colorful meanings.
Red
Red roses are the traditional symbol for love and romance, and will always be the classic way to say, "I love you." The red rose also reflects beauty and perfection. Deep or dark red roses can indicate a hidden beauty.
Pink
Words like gentleness, joy and sweetness are just a few ways to describe the meaning behind the pink rose. A pink rose can also convey happiness, gracefulness and admiration.
Yellow
Bright, cheerful and joyful are what come to mind when thinking of a yellow rose. Yellow roses create warm feelings and provide happiness. Giving yellow roses can tell someone the joy they bring you and the friendship you share.
White
White roses represent unity, purity and virtue. White roses are traditionally used in weddings and can represent new beginnings. White roses are also associated with honor and reverence, making them a fitting memorial for a departed loved one.
Orange
Orange roses evoke energy, and can indicate enthusiasm, desire and excitement. Giving them can symbolize your passionate romance and can be an expression of fascination.
Salmon
A slightly pinker shade of orange, the meaning behind salmon-colored roses sends a similar message as orange roses. Salmon roses can indicate desire and excitement. Giving this color rose is a way to share your desire for someone and let them know how you truly feel.
Ivory
They are said to represent charm, thoughtfulness and gracefulness. Ivory colored roses also represent richness and perfection. Ivory roses would be great for letting someone know you care, without romantic intentions.
Lavender
Love at first sight or just an enchanting way to say, "I love you!" Lavender roses can offer a daily reminder of your love and eagerness and signify growth in your relationship.
Blue
Blue roses represent mystery, the impossible, or the unattainable. Give a blue rose to someone and you are saying, “you are extraordinarily wonderful and unique. Blue roses are perfect for the woman who marches to the beat of her own drum.
Green
Green is the color of life, abundant growth, and constant renewal of life and energy. The green rose signifies the ongoing rejuvenation of spirit, and is therefore a messenger of cheerfulness. Sophisticated Woman | February 2020

Making A Great First Impression WRITTEN BY CHANTAL CAUSIN, DDS
DENTISTRY HAS MADE
many advances in
just the last few years. New technology allows for dental visits that are shorter, easier, and more comfortable. Digital intraoral scanners were introduced approximately 20 years ago and have changed the landscape of dentistry now that they have gone mainstream. Scanners, such as the Itero, can scan the mouths of patients in just minutes to create a 3-dimensional model of the teeth and gums. These scans are more detailed and more accurate than traditional dental impressions.
This process is more comfortable
as it eliminates the messy putty, drooling and gagging of traditional impressions. These scanners feature a wand which is moved over your teeth to capture images like a camera without radiation or chemicals. You can breathe and swallow and even take a break during the process if necessary. The scanners can benefit just about every dental professional and patient. They are ideal for crowns, bridges, implants, night guards, Invisalign clear aligners and retainers. With the Itero, you can even see a simulation of your Invisalign treatment outcome to see what your new smile might look like. Rather than waiting weeks for lab work to come in, this easier process allows the dentist to communicate with their
GO RED
patients in minutes. The Itero even has time lapse technology which can compare historical scans to current scans to see changes in tooth wear, movement, and changes in the gums or soft tissue over time. Start off the new year right with a dental cleaning and check-up and look for an office that offers the latest advances in technology to save time and maximize comfort. You won't be disappointed.

Todd S. Brasuell Pediatric Dentistry: Where Kids Are All Smiles IMAGINE TAKING YOUR kids on a fun adventure. For the little ones, the journey begins as soon as they enter a jungle world with more animals than they can imagine everywhere they look. The older kids head straight to the gaming area or relax watching a Netflix or Disney Plus movie. Either way, their visit is a rewarding experience in a welcoming environment where their care and comfort are top priority. Although it doesn’t sound like a typical doctor’s appointment, it is the experience that Dr. Todd Brasuell and his staff create for their pediatric dentistry patients. Dr. Brasuell credits his 10-person team for the success of the practice and they reciprocate with their enthusiasm and loyalty. Office Manager Theresa Margiotta describes the office philosophy. “Dr. Brasuell is a board-certified pediatric dentist with a mission to offer fun and entertainment while delivering the highest quality dental care. We welcome patients and parents like family and build lasting relationships.” Dental Hygienist Rebecca Mitchell echoes the importance of relationships. “I’ve been interested in dentistry since high school and always wanted to work with kids. I’ve been here since the beginning – 13 years – and absolutely love it. It’s so rewarding to win over a little one on their first visit or help them overcome any fears or anxieties. It’s great when they come back, remember you and jump in the chair with a smile. Remembering they get a prize at the end helps too!” “We see patients from age one to 21,” explains Theresa, “and we relate to them personally throughout. From toys and coloring books, to the animal murals, gaming area, the Swamp and LSU treatment rooms, and TVs above every chair for entertainment during their cleaning, there’s something to engage every age group. We also do fun things like holiday costume contests, giveaways and patient of the month. Dr. Brasuell supports local schools, is on the board of the Miracle League and even established a patient scholarship program for graduating seniors.” Parents choose Dr. Brasuell because of the relaxed and fun experience, because he is passionate about his job, and conservative as far as treatment planning and non-necessary treatments, reports Rebecca. Theresa adds that the relationship is not just between him and the parents, though. “The first thing he does is talk to the kids and engage them. My kids came here before I began working here so I knew Dr. Brasuell was a kind and caring person.” The office is also professionally respected as they often receive referrals from other dentists and doctors for treatments. Theresa adds that they welcome special needs children. “It’s such a relief to parents when their child is able to get treatments they were never able to get before. Because so many of our team are long-term, these kids see the same familiar faces. We note their favorite treatment room to ensure they get the same one, and they see the same assistant which makes them feel much more comfortable.”
Dr. Brasuell’s pediatric dentistry office is located at 189 Greenbrier Blvd. Suite A in Covington. For more information, call 985-892-9524 or visit toddbrasuelldds.com Sophisticated Woman | February 2020 13

A Woman of Many Hats WRITTEN BY JAN WINDHORST PHOTOS BY STEVE RANDON
“YOU CAN HAVE anything in life if you dress for it,” is the motto that Poppy McGovern shares with clients and it’s indicative of her own life story. Poppy is fearless in chasing her many dreams and has established herself as a savvy and diversified entrepreneur. “I grew up in Mississippi and moved to Amite 13 years ago. I’m not afraid to leap out there and open a business or try something new.” When she arrived in Amite, her first venture was a small hair salon. “I enjoyed interacting with clients, but my real love is fashion. My mom would rather shop than do anything else, so when I was a child, she would take me everywhere from thrift stores to lavish boutiques in New Orleans.” Poppy took inspiration from those outings and opened a boutique of her own. “The store took off, so I focused on that. Seven years later it’s still thriving.” The boutique business also allows Poppy to indulge in another favorite activity – travel. “I go to market all over – Chicago, Los Angeles, Atlanta - they each have a different feel. Dallas is more country and western, Vegas is more contemporary and it’s my favorite.” The mother of three boys, Poppy says her sons enjoy the adventures of traveling also. “We stay in the old part of town when visiting Vegas. I took my youngest son a while back and also visited the Grand Canyon. He loved the whole experience. It’s great to incorporate quality family time into trips that also support my business.” While at market, Poppy’s objective is to constantly seek out the next big thing in retail. And if she can’t find it, she’s more than willing to create it herself. After not finding the perfect pajamas, the forward-thinking entrepreneur was inspired to create her own clothing line, Hello Gorgeous by Poppy, scheduled to launch this year. Working with a Los Angeles company, she focused on the perfect fit and feel of the fabric. “So much goes into development but it’s exciting. The line will be for high school girls to grandmothers and will have a very affordable price point.” And her eye on the future doesn’t only apply to the clothes themselves. Her next leap involves how she will sell her products. 2020 will bring the online launch of Poppy Ann’s Boutique. Poppy says of her vision, “Many customers prefer shopping from home. We live in a world where Amazon is at our fingertips, so we’re shifting gears. My first love is the physical stores, but you have to change with the times. Our Amite store will remain open, but everything else will be online.” Poppy says what will stay the same is offering something for everyone—from menswear to fancy dresses and tennis shoes. Never wanting to sit still, diversification is also a business principle the busy entrepreneur espouses. “I got my real estate license in Mississippi but put that on the back burner when I moved to Louisiana. About two years ago, I got the itch to get back into it. Like fashion, the type of home a person chooses is an expression of their personal style, and I like to help people with that.” Not afraid to get her hands dirty, Poppy also enjoys the opportunities real estate brings in the form of finding houses to flip. “In June of 2019, I took on a 70-year-old home in Ponchatoula and turned it into a beautiful, modern farmhouse home. I redesigned the kitchen and baths and did a lot of the painting and tile work myself. I’ve worked since a young age and have instilled in my boys the value of hard work. I get bored easily and need a lot of things going on to keep me happy. One of my first jobs was at a library. It was absolutely too quiet for me. I need action and excitement.” Getting the job done is in Poppy’s blood, even if the job may seem non-traditional. “When my significant other needed help at his bail bonds business 12 years ago, I went ahead and got my license. My friends questioned that decision, but I wasn’t afraid to dive in and help. We were able to grow that business and now have five agents under us. And, I still have the flexibility to pursue all of my other interests. Even if everything else fails,” she laughs, “I’ll always have job security in that line of business.” Reflecting on her journey, Poppy stresses the importance of giving back. “I donate to schools, churches and individuals in need. I’m a small-town girl that did it on my own. I worked hard to get here, and I want to go above and beyond to give girls jobs that are flexible so they can make money, pursue their education and live their own dream like I’m able to do now.” Poppy McGovern is an enterpreneur and founder of several businesses. Fulfilling A Vision By Serving Those In Need FEBRUARY IS A time to show your love. And while flowers and candy come to mind, one local organization is hoping you’ll think outside the box of chocolates this year when it comes to giving from the heart. Working tirelessly to achieve its mission of a hunger-free community, the Northshore Food Bank serves close to 300 families each week from St Tammany and Washington parishes and distributes approximately 80,000 pounds of food monthly through need-based programs. This January marked a milestone for the organization, founded in 1984, with the grand opening of its new $2.5 million food bank building. “This is an exciting day for our organization and Washington and St. Tammany Parishes as well,” said Terri Turner-Marse, CEO, Northshore Food Bank. “The face of hunger has changed in our community. It’s not simply the critically impoverished any more. So, access for all our clients is essential to our organization. The nearly 8,000 families the food bank touches each year will be more efficiently served in the new, well-equipped food bank. But we’re not done yet. Although we’ve raised 80% of the needed funding, we still need help in the form of capital contributions, food donations and volunteer hours to reach our goals.” Visions for the new Food Bank building and renovations for its Resale Shop have been a highlight of the organization’s long-range plan for nearly 5 years. “The Northshore Food Bank now has increased capacity and operational efficiency making it an even more invaluable resource to hungry families in our community,” says Jimmy Rogers, Chairman of the Board of Northshore Food Bank. Located in downtown Covington at 125 W. 30th Avenue, around the corner from the former food bank location, the new facility along with renovations of the existing campus are allowing the food bank to fight hunger on the Northshore by capitalizing on every opportunity to acquire and provide food. The over 13,000 square foot facility began serving the community on January 2, 2020. The new Northshore Food Bank features improved safety and traffic flow, increased warehouse space, larger freezer/ refrigeration capacity, and a volunteer area, enhancing the food bank’s ability to nurture bodies and strengthen spirits through its programs and resources. The project was designed by fl+WB Architects and built by Kent DesignBuild. Renovations have been made to the existing food bank building to accommodate the Resale Shop while operations of the Food Bank moved to the new building, expanding the overall footprint of the organization. The Northshore Food Bank is located at 125 W. 30th Avenue in Covington. To learn more about this project and how to make a donation, please visit northshorefoodbank.org or follow them on FaceBook @northshorefoodbank. 26 Sophisticated SophisticatedWoman Woman| |February February2020 2020 26

Help With Diabetes and Chronic Conditions WRITTEN BY LIZ TARABOUR, MS, RDN, CDE, LDN
DIABETES HAS BECOME
so prevalent
in our society that it almost seems normal and expected in many families and cultural groups. Medications are so good that it often takes the pressure off of personal responsibility and desire to improve through lifestyle changes such as healthy eating and physical activity. We could point fingers all day long at who/what is to blame for today’s chronic health crisis (busy schedules, fast food restaurants on every corner, billboards, food companies/industry), but the only real way to make progress is to look inward and evaluate one’s own self. Realize how important you are as a person and that you deserve to be healthy! Try to look at being healthy as a gift, not a burden.

The National Institute of Health defines diabetes as “a disease that occurs when your blood glucose, also called blood sugar, is too high. Blood glucose is your main source of energy and comes from the food you eat. Insulin, a hormone, helps glucose from food get into your cells to be used for energy. Sometimes your body doesn’t make enough—or any—insulin or doesn’t use insulin well. Glucose then stays in your blood and doesn’t reach your cells. Over time, high blood glucose can cause serious health problems.” The excellent news is that in addition to medications, there are simple lifestyle changes, such as improved nutrition and added physical activity, that can help tremendously. Just a five-minute walk after dinner can bring blood sugar levels down. Certified Diabetes Educators are experts in “all things diabetes.” Find one in your local area if you think you may need help controlling or preventing diabetes.

Misconceptions About Power of Attorney (POA) WRITTEN BY DOUG SUNSERI
CREATING A DURABLE
power of attorney
is a necessity for estate planning, especially if you experience health problems in the future. The Tom Benson interdiction litigation demonstrates the expense and extreme disruption caused by a contested interdiction proceeding. Let’s discuss misconceptions about powers of attorney. Misconception #1: You can sign a power of attorney if you are incompetent. An individual cannot appoint an agent for power of attorney if incapacitated. Only a mentally competent individual can execute a POA. Once a person lacks legal capacity, that person can no longer sign any legal documents. Misconception #2: You can find a power of attorney document on the internet. Power of attorney found online can cause unintended consequences. A power of attorney should be created to specifically address unique circumstances and the desires of the principal. Misconception #3: A power of attorney grants the agent the right to do anything with your estate. The agent, under a power of attorney, has a fiduciary duty to make decisions in the best interests of the principal. Just because a POA provides that an agent has the power doesn’t mean the agent has the right. Misconception #4: There is one standard power of attorney. There are different types of powers of attorney people frequently utilize. These include: • General Power of Attorney • Limited or Special Power of Attorney • Durable Power of Attorney Misconception #5: A General Power of Attorney and Durable Power of Attorney Survive Death. All powers of attorney terminate in the event of death. Upon death, the Executor (by Will) or Administrator (appointed by probate court) will be the authorized representative of the estate.

GARDENING SEASONS IN
Southeast Louisiana are not neatly defined on the
calendar as in other parts of the country. Our four seasons are known as first-warm, hot, second-warm, and cool, overlapped by transitional periods. Be mindful that the transitional months between the seasons can have varying higher and lower than average temperatures. Examples of this would be a late freeze in March or an early freeze in November to sometimes record high temperatures in May, September or October. February would appropriately be considered one of the cool season months.

NHS Associate Veterinarian, Dr. Mikala Myers says, “the benefits of vaccinating are HUGE! Not only that, but it is so much easier to prevent these diseases and infections than it is to treat the issues after they are contracted.” At our shelter, we do all we can to offer these crucial injections at the lowest cost possible. Vaccine packages are offered on multiple days throughout the year, but the biggest event offering this service is Woofstock. The community veterinary clinic is the main attraction at this fun festival. Each year, over 600 dog owners take advantage of discounted veterinary services.
