with our friends and families. July is particularly special to me since my daughter is home from college with big plans to celebrate her 19th birthday. Our beautiful cover girl, Ashlie Piediscalzo, is creating her own American Dream, albeit in the face of adversity. She faced the need to care for her young family by building a business that makes the most of her passion for clothing. On page 22, read about her personal journey and her thriving Slidell retail store, Saving Grace Boutique. July’s MENtionable is Reid Falconer. On page 31, he tells of his roots and career, which have now converged into a role of service for the parish and the state. Through strong community ties and family values, he lives by his credo, “People before politics.”

Dr. Elizabeth Kinsley Plastic Surgeon DR. ELIZABETH KINSLEY knew she wanted to be a surgeon since she was five years old and her resolve never wavered. While a student of art and sewing, she developed a love of symmetry and refined her technical skills under the tutelage of a strict mentor. Today her patients benefit from her eye for beauty and her exacting ability to execute that vision. While Dr. Kinsley performs a wide variety of in-office procedures including lip impants and labiaplasty, she is best known for breast augmentation and revisions. "For a primary augmentation where they've previously had nothing done, I examine and cosult with them to see what they want and what best fits their body." Dr. Kinsley's goal is to get the look just perfect. She created a sizing system and worked as a consultant for a major implant manufacturer. "Sizing is the main issue, so we do a nice 3-D simulation with a virtual reality headset that shows them what they will look like. My patients just love that. Rushing through the sizing process can cause dissatisfaction, so I take my patients' input seriously. My focus is on getting it right the first time." Some patients seek revisions to replace or fix problems with old saline implants or simply because they want a change. Dr. Kinsley addresses each patient's concerns with care and experience.

Dr. Matthew French French Bariatric Surgery WITH A FOCUS

on personalized care, Dr.

Matthew French offers laparoscopic weight loss procedures including gastric bypass, gastric sleeve, duodenal switch and revisional bariatric surgery. “Their lives are changed. They’re much healthier. Whether it’s a mother who can play with her child or someone older who can travel, my patients do things they never thought they would do again,” says the surgeon who has performed over 3,000 procedures. “Patients’ hunger is suppressed, and that’s a tremendous tool. But it’s a long-term commitment for them and for us as well, so we have a team in place to help them through the entire process.” Our patient advocates assist from the first appointment to the day of the surgery and beyond. Once the patient is physically optimized for surgery, Dr. French ensures they are mentally prepared. After surgery, the patient is further supported by a dietician and regular check-ups. “We follow patients for the rest of their lives to make sure they’re doing well. A younger patient could potentionally live up to 10 or 12 years longer, because once they lose weight, they are that much healthier," French states. “I love bariatric surgery because it’s the only kind of surgery that fixes diabetes, high blood pressure and sleep apnea. Laparoscopically,

for puzzles and is especially good at diagnosing patients with complicated medical histories and symptoms. She began her internal medicine practice in 1993 and gained experience with all types of medical issues as she trained in a rural medicine program. “My patients appreciate that I listen to them and spend the time to tease apart things that are causing problems in their lives,” says the doctor who treats a variety of problems from chronic pain and migraines to asthma, obesity and more. “They may have hypertension or diabetes, but if stress is the real driver, we look at their spiritual and emotional life along with physical aspects so they can feel truly healthy. That's the purpose—to feel whole.”
Dr. Murphy says she combines an Eastern approach to Western medicine and specializes in acupuncture that can help with depression, anxiety and chronic pain.

She also specializes in Addiction Medicine, having performed a fellowship at Tulane Medical Center. pediatrician, Brent McCarty

knew he wanted to be a physician at an early age. Once in medical school, he chose orthopedics as a specialty and found surgery appealing because it allowed him to take an active role in patient recovery. “I perform all kinds of orthopedic surgeries such as ankle and hip, but I chose to concentrate on the hand and upper extremities because they enable us to do so much – they are vital to our lives. A hand or shoulder injury can seem devastating, but surgery is quite good at getting people back to their normal, daily function.” Dr. McCarty has a varied patient population from the young to the elderly. “I treat children who may have just smashed a finger and don’t need surgery. Then in the middle ages I see a lot of sports injuries like shoulder and elbow problems in tennis players and pitchers. In elderly patients, I treat issues like carpel tunnel syndrome, trigger finger problems and distal wrist fractures from falls.” As part of the Pinnacle Hand Center team, Dr. McCarty works with Occupational Therapist and Certified Hand Specialist Angie Crowell, OTR/L, CHT. “Outcomes after surgery are dependent on three things: the procedure itself, the individual’s own ability to heal and physical therapy, which is vital. It’s most gratifying to get people back to doing the things they love – simple things you take for granted

Twisted Blendz TWISTED BLENDZ IS

a family owned and operated business, started by Sabrina Edgerson,

Adjuan Edgerson and Kortney Gilmore after trying CBD oil as an alternative to tradtiaional medicine for their various health concerns. They are very passionate about their products and are believers in CBD oil. Sabrina was having a hard time with menopausal symptoms, and CBD oil was the relief she had been seeking for the last 5 years. After extensive research and the search for a quality product, they opened Twisted Blendz. The Mandeville store specializes in CBD oil and also carries other alternative healthcare products such as organic herbs, soy candles and natural skin care products. Because CBD products are often misunderstood, Sabrina is quick to point out that CBD is not marijuana

kind of high. But it does provide medical benefits for a variety of common ailments.” Sabrina reports that CBD products can help with inflammation, anxiety, depression, and chronic pain, and that different delivery systems are best for different uses. “A tincture is placed under the tongue and is fast-acting so that would be good for anxiety. For chronic pain, gel caps take longer to work but the effects last longer. For topical pain, you would use a salve. We even have CBD pet treats to help with anxiety.” The family business’ goal is to also treat customers like family while improving their quality of life.

ALTERNATIVE HEALTHCARE PRODUCTS: Specializing in alternative healthcare products such as organic herbs, soy candles and natural skin care products.

“We have a conversation with them to find out what’s going on and choose the right products. Adjuan is a registered nurse so people find comfort in talking to her, but our whole staff is knowledgeable and attentive during consultations.” Sabrina is also proud of their selection of organic herbs. “We have a great variety that can be used for making teas, tinctures and gel caps, and we usually have some herbal tea brewing for customers to try.” Twisted Blendz is located at 3933 Highway 59, Suite B in Mandeville. QUALITY HEALTHCARE FROM OUR FAMILY TO YOURS 42570 S. Airport Road in Hammond | 985-510-6200 | cypresspointehospital.com

Cypress Pointe Hospital Network A “MEDICAL MALL” OF HEALTHCARE SERVICES

WHEN CYPRESS POINTE HOSPITAL,

HOSPITAL a 30-bed multi-specialty facility, opened almost a decade ago, the founding

physicians envisioned expanding one day into a network of health services that offer consumers a central location to access and receive a continuum of medical care from providers that work closely with and support one another. This vision will become a reality in December 2019 with the addition and opening of the Cypress Pointe Medical Office Building—a new medical mall concept designed to meet the changing landscape and demands of how consumers choose to receive care in a more accessible "retail" environment.

GUARDIANS OF EXCELLENCE® – THE CYPRESS EXPERIENCE Cypress Pointe Hospital and the physicians and ancillary services that make up the network have created a boutique medical experience that sets them apart from all others. “Compassionate, Quality Healthcare from Our Family to Yours” is the credo staff and physicians live by and has created a culture that patients appreciate and applaud. Cypress Pointe has been recognized by Healthgrades with the Outstanding Patient Experience Award and most recently in November 2018 by Press Ganey with the Guardian of Excellence Award.

NOT JUST A HOSPITAL – THE CYPRESS NETWORK CPH began as a small hospital with a few physicians, but as patient satisfaction grew, the network grew in turn to include inpatient and outpatient hospital services, as well as outpatient physician services. The network includes primary care affiliations and physicians who work closely with Cypress Pointe specialists. In addition to physicians, the network is growing and will include alignment with outpatient physicial therapy, an urgent care center and retail pharmacy services all located on the CPH campus.

cover story

Putting One Foot in Front of the Other WRITTEN BY JAN WINDHORST PHOTOS BY STEVE RANDON

ASHLIE PIEDISCALZO HAS an easy way about her and is quick to smile and laugh, but her underlying sadness shows as she recounts how her business, Saving Grace Women's and Children's Boutique, came to be. In 2011, Ashlie met the love of her life and they were married in 2016. “Just five months later I was four weeks pregnant, the mother of a 2-year-old and a widow at 27. Johnny passed away of an undiagnosed heart condition. The coroner said he died instantly.” She takes a moment to catch her breath and digest the unbelievable words she has just spoken. “That entire year, I remember just lying in bed and crying every day at my mom’s house. I didn’t go back home for months. I couldn’t bring myself to walk past that spot where I found him. I cried out at night for him to visit me in dreams. I asked God what I did so wrong to deserve this.” She continues with a determined smile, “We had so much planned for our growing family. He was a wonderful father, an amazing husband and cared so much about family and friends. His drive and passion to support our family keeps me going. I view life differently now. I’m more empathetic to people going through loss, but I’m more driven because my kids don’t have anyone else – just me. I have to carry on for them and for Johnny.” Ashlie’s mother and grandmother are defining influences. “My mom’s mom lost the love of her life at the exact age I lost my husband. My mom didn’t have an easy childhood and my grandmother had to raise her babies alone. Now I’m living that legacy and have their example to help me.” Earlier in life, Ashlie took sewing lessons from her grandmother, but it was while working at a boutique during college that she discovered her love for fashion. “I loved picking out clothes and coordinating the fashion shows. And later, Johnny encouraged me to pursue it. One year for my birthday he had candles all around but where the cake would be was a sewing machine.” She gets misty at the memory. “He also joked that I should own my own store to save him money on all my clothes shopping.” Johnny’s playful advice turned into Ashlie’s saving grace as she sought to provide for her children and find new joy and inspiration after her devastating loss. “I started Saving Grace Boutique online first and then opened the store in Olde Town Slidell. Then I thought, ‘What did I get myself into?'" she laughs as she hands one son a toy and wrangles the other just before he falls. “People don’t realize what goes into it. It’s hard to juggle. Thankfully, I can rely on my employee Bailee, my sister Rebecca who works with me on her days off and my brother Devin who helps with maintenance.” What makes it all worth it? “I’m a people person so I like meeting customers, finding out about them and dressing them. It’s fun to get them out of their comfort zone, or we can just talk. Either way, I want a relationship and to keep it affordable for them. My reason to do everything is my boys. I want them to know they can get through tough times like I did.” The boys also inspired her to add a children’s boutique. With that expansion comes a new address nearby. “The children’s side will be separate, but in the same building and I’m excited to stay in Olde Town. It’s becoming more family oriented with something for everyone - more shopping and restaurants—it’s turning into a mini Magazine Street.” When she’s not camping or mud riding with her boys, Ashlie finds comfort in inspiring others. She recently spoke about persevering through difficult times at the Empowered: Living Life with Purpose event. “I was so emotional I could hardly choke out the words, but my message was that no matter what you’re going through, if you seek God, he’ll help you find something to fight for. I’ve also learned that living in the moment is way more important than worrying about tomorrow or yesterday. Life is short and fragile, so enjoy the moment. Take the pictures. Take the videos. Cherish every second with those you love most.” Saving Grace Women's and Children's Boutique is located at 2259 Carey Street in Slidell. Water is Critical in the Heat of Summer WRITTEN BY PAUL K. ANDRES, ST. TAMMANY MASTER GARDENER ASSOCIATION

STEP OUTSIDE AND the heat and humidity of summer will impact you to such a degree that you might have to stop and catch your breath. Your lawn and outdoor plants are also feeling that weight. Watch for wilting or dull color, then check the soil often for dryness. It is important to properly and adequately water your landscape during these extreme summer conditions. Plants are about 90% water which performs four major functions: structure, food and nutrient transportation, food production and cooling. Getting water to plants may not be as straightforward as the use of water. First, avoid watering plants in direct sun when evaporation is the greatest. It is also not a good idea to water late in the evening because plant leaves or grass will stay moist and invite many types of pests and diseases into your gardens. Recommended watering times are very early in the morning or in the late afternoon, giving the water a chance to seep into the soil and allowing the plant to dry somewhat before the night arrives. Another watering question is "how much?". That answer depends on the dryness of the soil, how often it’s watered and how efficiently a plant uses water. In general, a long, slower soaking of the ground is best. Allow the water to sink into the ground 4 to 6 inches. If watering pots, allow all the soil to absorb the water, not just the top and sides. Water is not always the answer, but many times it is. More information can be found at www.lsuagcenter.com. Happy Gardening!

What is a Living Will? WRITTEN BY CHRISTIE TOURNET

A LIVING WILL

is different from a Last Will

and Testament. While a Last Will and Testament provides direction for distributing an estate upon someone’s passing, a “Living Will” serves as the legal document that memorializes your intent for requesting or refusing medical treatment that artificially prolongs life if: 1) you have a terminal, irreversible condition, and 2) you can no longer make medical decisions for yourself. More specifically, the Living Will only becomes effective under Louisiana law, La R.S. 40:1151.2, when: 1) two physicians have personally examined you and confirmed the terminal, irreversible condition, and 2) the physicians further confirm that death will occur, whether or not life-sustaining procedures are utilized and where the application of life-sustaining procedures would serve only to artificially prolong the dying process. Thus, the Living Will does not become triggered in the event of a medical emergency and the Living Will is not equivalent to a “Do Not Resuscitate Order.” A Living Will can also be drafted to trump a healthcare power of attorney, so that your wishes are met without your healthcare agent having to also make end-of-life medical decisions. A Living Will can also be drafted to specifically address your intent to donate organs. Ultimately, an executed Living Will may relieve your loved ones from making a very difficult decision, and it may alleviate conflict among loved one’s with different opinions on administering or withholding further medical treatment. Once your Living Will is complete, you should

keep it in a safe place with your other important documents. And if you wish, you can also place a copy on file with your primary care physician or you may register it with the Louisiana Secretary of State’s end of life registry.

Keeping Your Microbiome Happy WRITTEN BY DR. LISA MARIE PATE

IT IS ESTIMATED

that our gut microbiome

contains an extraordinary array of trillions of bacteria. As we learn more about this invisible world, we realize it impacts health on a large scale. Research has found that different diets create different gut flora, which in turn affects our overall health. When your gut isn’t working well, it can lead to health issues such as constipation, allergies, weight gain, inflammation, mood disorders (anxiety, depression), arthritis, autoimmunity, frequent colds and more. When your gut-dwelling bacteria are populated with healthy colonies, they assist with digestion, immunity, hormones and processing of vitamins and nutrients. When harmful bacteria take control, this is when disease begins. Your gut is also home to a majority of the immune system, called GALT. When our microbiome is imbalanced, the immune system may not be as effective at fighting off microbes, and this can affect the systemic immune system. The gut is also known as the second brain, because the gut houses the enteric nervous system, which consists of some one hundred million neurons and neurotransmitters. More than 90% of the body’s serotonin is in the gut, as well as about 50% of the body’s dopamine. These neurotransmitters regulate functions such as mood, sleep, appetite and learning. A few ways to support your gut microbiome include: eating prebiotic and probiotic foods, managing stress and getting a good night’s sleep. Prebiotic foods include: asparagus, banana, dandelion greens, eggplant, garlic, artichoke, jicama, kefir, leeks, onions, raddichio and peas. Probiotic foods include: fermented vegetables, kefir, kimchi, kombucha, miso, natto, sauerkraut, and yogurt. If you are suffering from any health issue, it’s always important to check in with your gut!

What's Trending in Teeth Whitening Products WRITTEN BY MELISSA H. JOHNSON, DDS

THIS SUMMER, CHARCOAL

toothpaste

is trending. If you haven’t seen your favorite Instagram star using it, you can definitely find it hugging the end of a store aisle. Charcoal toothpaste has been more dramatic than lightactivated whiteners of yesteryear. Are these products a good choice for you, or is your favorite Instagram star pulling a fast one? The lack of evidence in the dental community suggests it’s not the best choice. A literature review in the Journal of the American Dental Association looked at 118 different articles on brushing with charcoal and found no benefit. More concerning, the study could not substantiate the safety of charcoal products, citing abrasiveness as a potential issue in wearing away the enamel of our teeth. The Instagram stars are not technically pulling a fast one—they’re just not promoting the best choice. A study from The Journal of Applied Oral Science in 2019 looked for the most successful whitening toothpastes. They compared whitening toothpastes with four different types of whitening agents, including activated charcoal. What were the results? The greatest whitening performance after continuous use went to blue covarine-based toothpastes, with hydrogen peroxide toothpastes coming in second. Last place went to activated charcoal. So, activated charcoal is not the best option, but there are many safe over-the-counter alternatives. Just look for the American Dental Association’s

Matthew Montero The Art of the Icon WRITTEN BY JAN WINDHORST ARTIST PHOTO BY MICHELLE PREAU

THEY ARE DEFINING figures in culture, art, music, design and sports. They are inspiring, mysterious, tragic and driven, often eccentric and sometimes tortured. They are icons. And one rising artist is embracing their stories, delving into their psyches and bringing them to life with his bare hands and presenting them through a four-dimensional, gallery experience. Like many of his subjects, his creativity was born of depression. In search of relief from the need to sacrifice a New York career to care for his terminally ill father back home on the Northshore, Matthew Montero began creating stunning portraits of people whose triumphs and tragedies are famously intertwined. “I pick deep artists with world altering influence, and their lives have to speak to me personally. I immerse myself in these characters and learn everything I can about them. Like a method actor, I put myself in their stories. Studying my heroes and interpreting them is soul nourishing and helped lift me out of my dark place,” says the passionate, young artist, who prefers to guide guests through his meticulously designed space, barefoot. Montero works and displays in a wooded Northshore sanctuary that is a total reimagining of his father’s home. “I want guests who visit to experience the whole environment and space, not just the works.” Montero paints the icons using house paint applied without tools or brushes. “I want to capture their soul and put it on canvas. I need to feel them in my hands,” he explains as he drags his fingers through his dark, uncoiffed curls. And because he uses durable house paint, he encourages viewers to feel the icons too. “I create unique, three-dimensional textures for hair and fabrics and smoother ones for skin for each subject. I want guests to experience the different personalities with their hands like I do.” The fourth dimension of the presentation is Montero’s own narration of his inspiration, process and design choices bringing each depiction of diverse human experience to life. “I didn’t want to be in anyone else’s gallery. I wanted the whole presentation under my control.” While Montero says he will never sell the originals, he has garnered the attention of international interests and is currently in negotiations with Wynn Resorts to open an ICONS by Montero Museum in their Las Vegas property. The originals would be on display along with the opportunity to buy signed prints and merchandise featuring his artwork including apparel, pillows, glasses, coasters and more. Montero says his ambition is to have three U.S. based museums in Las Vegas, New York and Los Angeles and eventually add locations overseas. Until then, he is happy to engage all his visitors, even children, with his enigmatic creations.

ICONS by Montero is located in Covington. Tours are by appointment only. For more information and to shop online, contact info@iconsmuseum.com or visit iconsmuseum.com Sophisticated Woman | July 2019 33

heatstroke in our canine companions. Dogs are unable to sweat out their body heat the way humans do. They try to normalize their body temperature through rapid, heavy panting as the water on their toungue evaporates and cools them off. The exchange of heat through their paw pads can also help; however, this isn’t always enough to lower body heat. The faster an owner recognizes the signs of heatstroke and exhaustion, the faster the problem can be treated. If your dog has a temperature of over 103 degrees, he or she is at risk of heat exhaustion. If it’s over 106 degrees, it may be experiencing heatstroke and could enter cardiac arrest. Important tips to prevent heat exhaustion: 1. Never leave your dog in a parked car alone. The temperature inside your vehicle can rapidly exceed 180 degrees, even with the windows cracked. 2. Walk your dog during the early morning or evening hours. Avoid walking long distances during late morning and afternoon hours. 3. If you must leave your dog outside during the daytime, always have a large supply of fresh water for him and a shady spot. 4. Overweight dogs and brachycephalic dogs (dogs such as Bulldogs) are more susceptible to heat stroke and heat exhaustion. If you suspect your dog is suffering from heat exhaustion or heat stroke, spray them down with a hose immediately and get them to your veterinarian without delay. Have a fun, safe and cool summer!
