publisher's note

Reset. Rewind. Renew. I HOPE EVERYONE has been staying safe and well. Although it has been challenging, we have continued to deliver Sophisticated Woman Magazine every month while embracing the new normal. Like many others, we’ve had to think outside of the box and challenge ourselves regarding our work. Our last fashion shoot was for our March issue on the brink of lockdown. No one would have guessed that two months later the world would face a shut down and a home confinement. I am excited to say we safely and successfully pulled off this month’s fashion spread for the first time since then, with the help of our local boutiques–Columbia Street Mercantile, Jenlyn’s Boutique, Joe’s Family Shoe Store and Stella & Grace Boutique–with special thanks to Oak Knoll Country Club in Hammond. You will find our favorite, stylish selections for summer on page 14. Now more than ever, I hope that you will support these and other local retailers. As we all look towards new beginnings, this month’s Enterprising Woman, Maryann Bruno, and her husband Bobby took their vision of what Northshore life should be and created a residential development that reflects those ideals, Wingfield Estates. Read about how they–amidst personal challenges–built a dream for themselves and others in their inspiring story on page 22. In our home feature on page 26, learn about how Stacey Whittemore made the most of her recent at-home time by beautifully decorating her family's home she recently designed and built with heartfelt intention and artful inspiration. And whether you’re celebrating this Fourth of July at home or at one of the area’s modified gatherings listed in our calendar section, make sure you check out this month’s cocktail and dinner recipes. Liberty & Libations and Shrimp and Cherry Tomato Pesto Pasta will help you get things going with a bang. Here’s to more kindness, less stress and a renewed sense of purpose as we continue to navigate through these challenging times.

The New Normal

Northshore Physicians & Healthcare

father's day

WRITTEN BY JAN WINDHORST

EVEN AS JULY brings a step towards new normalcy with relaxed social distancing guidelines and planning for safe summer activities, healthcare concerns remain top-of-mind for the majority of people. Whether it’s planning for postponed gatherings such as graduations and cultural endeavors; rescheduling interactions such as school attendance and elective medical procedures; or participating in cherished traditions such as Independence Day celebrations and summer family travel, there is much conflicting and confusing information in the media—particularly social media. This month’s issue is dedicated to the Northshore’s top healthcare professionals who have stepped up to offer expert medical attention, healthy advice and clarity for those seeking help, guidance and care. Customized family and women’s care, advanced chiropractic techniques, award-winning pain management, aesthetic procedures and weight management are some of the topics covered by local, respected authorities, along with insight into their practice philosophies and motivations for choosing their challenging yet rewarding callings. Moving forward, social and mental health play an important role in overall wellbeing also. As attractions and places for recreation and social interaction reopen, some operating with modifications, we strive to bring you the most up-to-date information available to us. Just like much of our routine, our monthly calendar is finally returning, albeit with modifications. While specific event listings are very limited, these pages offer ideas and opportunities to recreate and enjoy Northshore offerings now available to you and support those looking to enhance the health of their own local businesses. PREMIER CHIROPRACTIC DR. AARON DUTRUCH EXUDES passion for his patients. It’s evident when he talks of his team’s mission to provide relief from pain in the gentlest way possible. Born in St. Tammany Parish, Dr. Dutruch says he has always looked forward to being able to use his knowledge and skills back home and help others. “The theme of our Monday morning staff meeting is always to remember that we’re here to help people and ease their pain.” Indeed, his patients turn to him for relief they can’t find elsewhere for conditions such as low back pain, chronic neck stiffness, tension, migraines, and disc related issues such as numbness and tingling. Dr. Dutruch uses gentle techniques to help the patient’s joints move better and restore normal range of motion allowing patients to feel relief while avoiding surgery and more aggressive, painful options. His years of experience have helped him develop special proficiencies such as Upper Cervical Chiropractic and refine his overall approach of treating patients for an experience that minimizes pain and maximizes results. One of only a handful of chiropractors in Louisiana that offer this technique, Dr. Dutruch’s Upper Cervical procedure is a gentle but sophisticated spinal correction that can reduce the number of symptoms for patients without surgery or medication. Dr. Dutruch says, “Surgery is not the only option. I’m happy to report that I’ve helped prevent many involved and painful surgeries for my patients.” The technique involves x-rays before and after the correction, showing immediate improvements. It is effective for

DS FAMILY MEDICINE THE FEELING ONE gets when arriving at DS Family Medicine is like coming home. From the outside, patients see an Acadian cottage—a nod to Dr. Devan Szczepanski’s Cajun heritage. Stepping inside reveals soothing muted green walls dotted with artworks. An aromatherapy diffuser sprays therapeutic essential oils as relaxing spa music wafts through the air. Her “granny’s” chandelier provides gentle lighting in her office. While most waiting rooms tend to make patients restless, Dr. Szczepanski’s unorthodox office provides a serene escape, fitting for this physician whose mission is to rediscover the "Art of Medicine" through personalized, comprehensive care. Dr. Szczepanski believes that the future of medicine will not necessarily be found only in a prescription bottle. Where science alone falls short, the art of medicine effortlessly fills in the gaps by providing true individualized “whole-person” care; ultimately placing the highest value on the patient-doctor relationship. This philosophy is truly what defines and sets apart her practice, DS Family Medicine. Today, Dr. Szczepanski’s staff numbers more than 20—her second family. Traditional services include in-house ultrasounds and lab work, which provides convenience with real-time diagnostics that instill efficient and effective care for each of her patients. When applicable, this is complemented with the DS Therapeutics division of her practice, offering the ultimate individualized regimens of vitamins and supplements that can be further customized for each patient based on nutritional genetic testing. Using her genebased nutritional approach to healthcare, Dr. Szczepanski enjoys discovering what's going on with her patients “down to the

A Land of New Beginnings

cover story

WRITTEN BY JAN WINDHORST PHOTOS BY STEVE RANDON

MARYANN BRUNO RECENTLY celebrated a momentous occasion—40 years of marriage to her high school sweetheart Robert Bruno. The couple met at his senior prom in New Orleans, and although they arrived with different dates, they left having sparked an immediate connection. Their life together has been filled with great joy and tremendous tragedy, but through it all, their bond has grown into a beacon of togetherness and hope. “I had a great childhood growing up in Lakeview. I went to Mt. Carmel and LSU, then came back to New Orleans where I finished my CPA studies while Bobby attended law school. I enjoyed working at Ericksen, Krentel and Barré but opted to become a stay-at-home mom after having our second child. That’s really where my heart was. It meant everything to me to build a family and support Bobby in the wonderful Bruno family business.” As their children grew, the couple sought the benefits of relocating to St. Tammany, which promised a tranquil landscape more conducive to family life – a motivation that still resonates with them and has inspired their current venture. After decades of commitment to and experience in responsible growth in the parish, Bruno Brothers Property Development Company is allowing Bobby and Maryann to pursue a highly personal undertaking. “This new development is our vision of what Northshore life should be and an opportunity for new beginnings for us and the community we’ll create,” says Maryann, recently named Executive Vice-President and Development Coordinator for Wingfield Estates, a 47-home, 160-acre site in Covington near Interstate 12 and Highway 1077. Upon entering, the Brunos’ own Northshore home embodies their adventures, loves and sense of place. An eclectic mix of unique furniture and vibrant paintings mingle with stately photos, documents and even musical scores. Not simply décor, each piece tells a personal story, from Bobby’s enthusiasm for preserving local history to Maryann’s flair for spirited style. The unifying theme is the connection attached to each—a friendship with or relation to the artist, local cultural resonance, or remembrance of a treasured experience shared with their children. Amidst the evidence of a fulfilling life, finding a reason for new purpose has been difficult for the mother of four who was devastated by the loss of two children. During dark times Maryann calls upon her mantra, ‘Be better, not bitter.’ Her generous spirit is reflected in an early milestone of her healing process, Gift Perfect, a gift basket boutique. The need to create beauty manifested in her becoming a licensed cosmetologist. Now, her desire to share beauty and gifts comes in the form of helping to develop an idyllic environment that families will call home. “We want to create something good, to build a community that offers everything residents could want in a happy home no matter their stage of family. It’s the best of both worlds—serenity and community; limited homesites with ample land and reasonable square footage requirements that allow trees, fresh air and stargazing while still enjoying neighbors; city services in a gated, country setting that’s deceptively convenient to interstates, shopping and schools. It’s taken me a long time to get excited about something, but I feel like we’re building the perfect living environment and leaving behind a meaningful legacy. It’s unique in the large lot size and affordability, close to everything you need – it’s all the things we were looking for when we chose the St. Tammany lifestyle.” Maryann credits Bruno Brothers’ business savvy, experience and backing, as well as her husband’s vision, for making their dreams possible. In life together since their teens, she tells of his decades-long drive and ability to foresee growth, responding with developments that serve both commercial and residential needs while serving the community. “I can’t talk about myself without talking about my husband and the family business. After our loss, we were filled with agony and indecision, despite Bobby’s previous successes. The Wingfield Estates project is a road we felt compelled to take, and we wanted to do it together – a symbol of new beginnings and dreams-come-true for other families. But we certainly couldn’t have begun without the support of his brothers.” Of his wife, Bobby Bruno adds, “She’s modest when it comes to her contributions, but Maryann has been an invaluable partner and advisor throughout every aspect of our lives. She’s a wonderful mother, smart businesswoman and the ideal person to help others.” Personal development is also important to Maryann. She enjoys camaraderie and athletics as a long-time tennis player at Stone Creek and is involved in Bruno’s sponsorship of the Rich Mauti Cancer Fund Tennis Tournament. She is a St. Benedict’s Society member and enjoys life-long learning including art history classes at The Abbey. Despite her personal achievements, fierce dedication to family and growing strength in the face of staggering loss, Maryann Bruno insists on avoiding the spotlight. “It’s not about me, and it’s bigger than us. It’s about building on the success of Bruno Brothers, the generosity of Bobby’s brother partners, and wanting to give back to them as they have given us so much. It’s an opportunity to preserve the character and loveliness of the area while at the same time making it better.” Bruno Brothers Real Estate Development & Management is located at 70325 Highway 1077, Suite 101 in Covington. Stacey explains, “We’re empty nesters now so we were able to downsize and include unique elements that I consider luxurious and a layout that allows me to enjoy many of my favorite things.” The first thing that is apparent on entering the 3,200 square foot, three bedroom, three and a half bath home is Stacey’s inclusive sense of style. Instrumental in creating the plans, she further put her mark on the home’s personality by bringing together modern and traditional elements, and painting and customizing furniture and décor herself. Amidst the inconvenience of stay-at-home orders, Stacey found time to throw herself into the project, giving it time and attention that "business as usual" wouldn’t have allowed. “My mother was a decorator, so I grew up in a beautiful home and picked up the knack of it from her. We moved into the house less than a year ago, and recently I finally had time to unify all the ideas and different pieces I had been gathering for years to put my signature on it.” Stacey says the first priority was that the main living area be open so she could still be a part of any activities while working in the kitchen she so loves. Any vantage point amongst her food prep amenities that includes a Thor double oven and six-burner cooktop, a must-have trash compactor and a private wine cooler (exclusively reserved for her chardonnay) allows for an unfettered view. Sights include a sizable island surrounded by custom barstools and swivel chairs where family and guests enjoy her festive hospitality, a dining room graced by a handpainted table and chairs for which Stacey chose the fabrics and recovered herself—all beneficiaries of her ability to blend style and color. “Overall I went with a modern look – the current trend of lots of white accented with blue, but I’m also willing to take risks with combinations of furniture pieces and accents, personal touches and colors.” Besides fine food and wine, another of Stacey’s loves is the movies. Luckily, while public theaters were closed, she and her family were able to partake in the favorite pastime due to her foresight to include a 75” big screen television around which she designed custom bookcases backed with a pop of teal and adorned with pottery and meaningful mementos. “My mom was a huge influence, and we had a very special relationship. When she died unexpectedly six years ago, I wanted to find a way to keep her close so there’s something in every room to Sophisticated Woman | July 2020 27

home feature remind me of her – even a whole closet of her Christmas collectables. The ceramic figures on the bookcase were ones she had in her house commemorating the beach vacations she’d take each year with her seven grandkids. My siblings and I each took the figures representing our children, and they were generous enough to let me keep mom’s figure. It’s a very special memory.” Stacey also designed a special sanctuary for her hard-working husband Mike. “While Mike tended to his job responsibilities, he trusted me to design the plans. I had free reign, so I wanted to include something very personal for him also.” Although born in California, Mike would spend summers in New England with his grandfather going to baseball games. Mike passed the love of the Boston baseball team to their son, and they share a summer ritual of visiting a different park each year for a Red Sox away game. To celebrate this bond, Stacey designed for him a lounge off of the main living area looking out onto the pool and including a full bar with sports related décor. “The upper shelves hold 130 bottles of wine with a wide assortment of spirits below. I painted the ceiling in a baseball glove color with walls in blue and accents in red including a copper sink. I found old pine doors in New Orleans to make it warm and inviting and set it apart from the rest of the house. When we’d check on the building progress, he thought it was just going to be an exercise room. I was thrilled to surprise him with something so dear to him.” Stacey describes the outdoor area as the cocktail pool - small but functional and just as important for aesthetics reflecting their travels to wonderful resorts. “I wanted to create a courtyard feel and give my husband’s bar area a nice view of that.” The master bath is also inspired by the exotic spas of their globetrotting trips. “I was able to incorporate some favorite luxuries into the design. I have a beautiful steam room, a lifechanging bidet and a dream closet.” Stacey stylishly achieved her goal of not just designing for design’s sake, but also capturing a signature feeling of warmth - a place where she and Mike, kids Kelsey and Megan, and beloved dogs Dazzle and Charlie can truly call home.

Stacey designed a LOUNGE off of the MAIN LIVING AREA looking out onto the pool that includes a FULL BAR with SPORTS-RELATED DÉCOR.

How COVID Changed Josie’s Life WRITTEN BY SUSIE KAZNOWITZ, NHS DIRECTOR OF MARKETING

COVID HAS NOT only created new stories for people and their families, the outbreak has played a

significant role in some of the most heartwarming moments for homeless animals in our community. This is a story of Josie and how the COVID outbreak changed her life. When the “Stay at Home” order was enacted, Northshore Humane Society seized the opportunity to get animals out of the shelter and into foster homes. Liz McGough and her family had considered fostering before, and like many others, took their quarantine time to help an animal in need. They chose to foster senior pup Josie, who was one of 47 dogs rescued earlier this year from an overwhelmed breeder in Washington Parish. For the last several months, Josie and her foster family have grown very fond of one another. Even in her golden years and with arthritis, Josie loves her “old lady walks” and weekly visits to Bogue Falaya

Park. When we received the news that Josie was in advanced stages of lung cancer, we were overcome with both sadness and gratitude. Josie now has a home where she can live out her last months, loved and cared for by an amazing family. What started as a temporary situation during a pandemic became so much more – it brought a much-deserving pup to the loving family she needed. Eyes Procedures for A Refreshed Look WRITTEN BY MICHELE COOPER, MD

DO YOU WANT

to look refreshed and wide-

eyed? Exciting new technology has made correcting aging lower eyelids a snap for some patients. AccuTite can be performed in the office in as little as 30 minutes using only local anesthetic. The procedure is performed through a small needle-sized opening in the skin which creates minimal scarring. The procedure causes some swelling and redness for 2-4 days, and the results continue to tighten and improve over 6-10 weeks. Although AccuTite provides scar free skin tightening, there are some patients with significant fat herniation under the eyes that will require fat removal. The fat can be removed through the inside of the eyelid. This technique creates a small scar, but it’s inside the eyelid and therefore not visible. The surgeon may also choose an incision along the lower lid rim by the eyelashes that will allow them to remove skin and fat. Because upper eyelid skin redundancy must be treated with excision, the AccuTite and other minimally invasive procedures are not effective for the upper lids. The results of surgery to the upper and lower lids are immediate but with some swelling and minimal bruising that is usually gone within 10 days. Sutures come

out at 5 days and makeup can be worn shortly thereafter. All eyelid procedures described can be performed in the office with local anesthetic or with mild sedation. They say the eyes are the windows to the soul. Are your windows starting to look tired, puffy, and old? The first step is to consult with a plastic surgeon, oculoplastic surgeon, or a facial plastic surgeon. All of these specialists are trained to treat these conditions.

Tips for Watering in the Summer Months WRITTEN BY SNOANN WILLETT, ST. TAMMANY MASTER GARDENER ASSOCIATION

SUMMER MONTHS IN the garden are known for either too much rain or not enough. Because July’s weather is very humid and hot with several hours of sunlight, how you water is essential. When: Early morning is best, between 5 am and 8 am. Water remaining on foliage has time to dry before the heat of the day. Early-hour watering helps maintain soil hydration when temperatures rise. Evening irrigation is better than none at all, so if you must, do so no later than 6-7 pm since moist leaves at night invite disease. Once in a while is acceptable, but try to keep routine watering during morning hours. How: Slow and steady. Large blasts of water from a high-powered nozzle may seem faster but only results in washing away soil and ineffectively providing water to the roots, where it's needed most. A small stream of water from a garden hose with no nozzle, a soaker hose or drip irrigation yields better absorption. A depth of 4-6 inches is a good guide for maintaining moist soil conditions. Apply water under the foliage. Sprinklers of every variety and configuration are available but are better suited for irrigating lawns or a child’s activity. In high heat and sun, water from sprinklers tends to evaporate before reaching deep into the soil, thus causing roots to remain shallow. Also, sprinklers tend to leave too much water on foliage which is an ideal environment for disease and could interfere with pollination. Container and raised beds will typically need more frequent waterings than in-ground plants. Be sure to allow water to pass through the container a bit for a proper soak. Thorough weekly watering grows deeper roots and stronger plants. Happy Growing!
