IMAGINE SITTING IN Children’s Hospital with your ill, special-needs child

She explains, “Our household loves football. In fact, Juliana’s first spoken word

holiday feature at 14 was ‘Touchdown!’” Having learned of Basket of Hope in 2009 through Kurt Warner’s Foundation, First Things First, when the Saints met the Rams in the playoffs, she realized it would be a perfect fit. “I could launch a local nonprofit chapter here without having to reinvent the wheel.” In 2010 having raised the $10,000 startup fee and registering with the state, Ann founded Basket of Hope Louisiana and established a board of directors. From her first visit to Children’s Hospital New Orleans with just 12 baskets, her labor of love has grown to touch 720 families in 2019 alone. Additional hospitals currently served include Ochsner Baptist NICU, Ochsner Children’s, St. Tammany Parish Hospital, Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital, The Ronald McDonald House and Hogs Family Home. Following the example of the St. Louis Chapter, Ann recruited players and coaches from the Saints, Pelicans and LSU to personally visit and deliver baskets, delighting entire families and gaining valuable visibility. “It’s so much more than just a basket,” Ann explains with heartfelt emotion. “Eightyear-old Maddy summed it up during her visit – ‘Wow is that for me?’ and shared ‘When I got my basket it made me forget about all that pain.’ Our visits are like Christmas for the patients, but we deliver throughout the year bringing unexpected love and joy.” Ann says the tears are near when you enter a hospital room with an isolated and lonely parent. Many don’t have faith, hope, or time for themselves and are wracked with worry about their child. “When this ray of sunshine comes in the room, the parents cry, ‘You have something for me? Someone is thinking about me?’ It’s pretty powerful.” Ann can relate to these weary parents and is called to nourish them mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually. To their recipients, the ‘Hope Tote,’ filled with such items as inspirational books, soothing teas and self-care products are comforting in themselves, but also serve as a reminder that they are not alone. Ann believes as long as there is breath, there is hope. “My daughter is a testimony to overcoming odds. She is walking and full of joy.” Ann made the leap of faith to resign from her job and lead Basket of Hope full time in 2018. Regarding current operations, Ann says they haven’t allowed Covid 19 to hinder their mission of hope. “We’ve continued to serve the community in our ‘Beyond the Basket’ efforts with hundreds of nourishment baskets for families and medical staff, provided meals and helped individual families with personal needs. We couldn’t bring hope without the individuals and businesses who value our mission and support us.” In her 10th year, Ann’s goal is to bring hope to 1000 hospitalized children and families. “Anyone can sponsor a basket and Hope Tote combo for $100 at labasketofhope.kindful.com. We value all gifts. It’s humbling and an honor to share my greatest gift from God – to give His hope and love to those who are sick.”

The He(art) of Gift Wrapping MONTHS OF SHOPPING

can turn into minutes of blissful mayhem and piles of paper in the middle of the floor

during holiday family gatherings and gift exchanges. Searching for the perfect gift wrapping paper to coordinate with your decorations can be daunting as well as expensive–all to just be crumpled up and shoved into a giant trash bag. Why not try something different this year when it comes to wrapping your gifts? Unique and thoughtful presentations that dazzle and delight can also become keepsakes and hold many special memories of celebrations. Here are 10 creative alternatives to traditional gift wrapping that can add an extra special sentiment to your holidays!

1. Baskets – Everyone loves a gift basket. Local thrift shops usually have baskets in all shapes and sizes. Add some cute tissue paper and a fabric bow and you're all set. 2. Wallpaper – Leftover wallpaper scraps can be put to use instead of being thrown away. Wallpaper is beautiful for gift wrapping and is a unique way to take your gift giving presentation to the next level. 3. Newspaper – Use the black and white stuff or grab the comic section for more colorful wrap. Use some simple red twine and a sprig of evergreen to create a classic yet fun look. 4. Tins or Jars – Mason jars make the ultimate gift container. Grab a reusable tin or can with a lid, and they work especially well for food gifts. 5. Reusable Net Bags – There are many tutorials online that will show you how to whip up gift bags of all sizes using net or cheesecloth bags. No tape required. Just gather the fabric and polish it with beautiful ribbon. 6. Fabric Scraps – Not handy with a sewing machine? Then use fabric scraps instead. Gather the fabric around your gift and then tie it off with a gorgeous bow. Burlap is especially rustic and charming, and satins and lace can add elegance and personal flair. 7. Pillow Cases – Inexpensive pillow cases are a great alternative for larger gifts. Tie them off with a tassel cord for an innovative alternative. 8. Maps – Maps can add a classic, vintage flair to your presents. Use them to wrap a gift for the world traveler on your list or to even suggest a visit or special vacation. 9. Towels, Blankets or Scarves – Wrap up your kitchen-themed gift with a set of dish towels or nestle baby gifts inside a soft, baby blanket. Vintage scarves from a thrift store also make a stunning presentation to your fashionista friend. 10. Feed Sacks – Feed sacks are the perfect wrapping for the shabby chic folks on your list. Burlap sacks are a creative way to naturally present your gift. Adding fresh lavender or holly berries to your organic design is sure to put a twinkle in anyone's eye. ENTERPRISING WOMAN

Katie Toups

A NORTH AMERICAN NATIVE tradition

declares,

the

Blue

Heron brings messages of selfdetermination and self-reliance. This elegant soul represents an ability to progress and evolve with grace. The heron’s long thin legs reflect that one doesn’t need massive pillars for stability but can learn to stand on one’s own. Katie Toups connects with her spirit animal, the blue heron, on many levels. It represents her love of Louisiana; and, the story of her life is told in the bird’s meaning to Native American cultures, whose heritage she shares. She describes humble beginnings - a childhood where her mother cleaned houses to survive hard times. “We didn’t have much, but my mom persevered tirelessly. I inherited her work ethic and the motivation to build a better life for myself.” Katie planned to become her family’s first to attend college with sights on a nursing career. Determined to succeed, she worked multiple jobs. “I tended bar in the French Quarter knowing it wouldn’t be my life’s work, but I learned a lot while in the service industry.” That taste of success in customer service revealed an innate strength, changing her career path and her life. That strength would be called upon again as she faced the ultimate test of survival from a rare carcinoid cancer at seven months pregnant.

Spreading Her Wings WRITTEN BY JAN WINDHORST PHOTOS BY STEVE RANDON

LIKE THE BLUE HERON, Katie Toups' ability to progress and evolve was rewarded with a quick ascent up the ladder of a Fortune 500 homebuilding corporation. “I liked serving clients but had no idea how quickly and deeply I would connect with sales and the industry. I was already motivated, but once I found my undiscovered natural talent, I was absolutely driven.” On her very first day, Katie sold a house to a man named Wesley. Along with winning the sale, she won his heart and now, nine years later, Katie and her husband share a son, Wesley, Jr. Katie’s ability and connection to customers led to her position as Sales and Marketing Manager of the company’s Southeast Louisiana division. Her duties not only included training and managing 30 salespeople and marketing new projects, but also expanded to development, land acquisition, floor plan design and purchasing. “As the sales manager, my belief in the developments was crucial. I was involved in every aspect of the process - market research to select locations and set price ranges, I had a hand in design and materials to ensure quality along with competitive pricing which resulted in timely sales benefiting the company.” Katie’s eight years in that corporate setting were invaluable and rewarding but true to her spirit animal’s message, she felt strong enough to stand on her own, spread her wings and fly to her next adventure. Katie decided to make her formidable talent and knowledge work for herself by forming her own real estate team. Aptly named The Blue Heron Group, powered by Anchor South Real Estate, her new endeavor assists clients in buying and selling luxury residential and commercial real estate from two offices – one in Madisonville and another in Denham Springs in the Anchor South Real Estate building. In her office near the Tchefuncte River, the company mascot presides as a symbol of Katie’s vision. She already has plans to offer property management services starting in February, to provide expanded staging services, and to open offices in Houston by this time next year. “I’m going for world domination,” laughs the ambitious but down-to-earth entrepreneur. “Running a well-oiled machine relies on the quality of my team and elevated customer service.” Katie is proud of her hand-picked agents, including Amanda Yates, Tiffini Helg, Ariel Holloway, Patrick Taylor, Brittany Rice and Katie Babineaux. “It’s a privilege to work here and because of my reputation, I can attract the best in the business. We have the expertise that others just don’t have and the mission to listen to customer needs and act with a serious sense of urgency. I’ve done market research here for years which means I can negotiate the best deals for buyers and get top dollar for sellers with an arsenal of proven marketing tools. Our ability to truly strategize has gotten customers tens of thousands more when we’ve taken over from another agent or the owner trying to sell themselves.” While Katie insists that work is her baby, she beams when speaking of her husband and son who bond over duck hunting. “My son saved my life. We wouldn’t have found the lung cancer had I not been pregnant. I’m six years cancer free and that experience has pushed me into overdrive. I’m so grateful for that and want to be an example to others battling cancer.” She is also grateful to share her success with her mother who helps Katie run the household. “I’m happy to take care of her now and share the fruits of hard work and self-determination that she taught me. Developing my career and being here for my family is what pushes me every single day to improve, grow and succeed.” The Blue Heron Group, powered by Anchor South Real Estate is located at 306 Pine Street, Suite 200 in Madisonville, 985-981-6037 and 8193 Vincent Road, Suite B in Denham Springs, 225-401-2525. W Congratulations to Bri Steilberg ! 2019 ENTERPRISING WOMAN OF THE YEAR

Because of this year’s many challenges and restrictions, we regret not being able to hold our annual Hat’s Off Luncheon - the time when we traditionally raise funds for a local charity and announce the winner of 2019 Enterprising Woman of the Year. Each month’s cover girl from 2019 was in the running, and the winner was chosen with a vote from you – our readers – earlier in the year. So without further ado, we are truly excited to finally make our announcement.

Bri Steilberg

Kinder Haus Montessori

"My role is to facilitate the family of wonderful women who work here and to broaden our reach into the community,” says the magnetic extrovert.

As Steilberg hosts a tour of the indoor and outdoor learning areas, small groups of engaged, outgoing

children interact with what Montessori calls their guides. “We work well together, motivate and love each other, and go above and beyond to bring

out the best in our children. We integrate parents’ talents for enrichment too, for example, there’s a dad who comes in and delights us all with his music.

We also offer parenting classes not only here but at the Parenting Center in Covington too.”

Stella & Grace Boutique

As Taylor Alfonso recounts her personal journey from the chic surroundings of her Stella & Grace Boutique, she points through the Robert Street display window, “I grew up right there watching my mom run her shop. She’s the smartest businesswoman I know, and I learned how to treat customers from her. She was her own boss and I knew I wanted the same thing.”

Treating Yourself With Love & Respect WRITTEN BY INGRID RINCK

Whatever the past year may (or may not) have brought you, there’s no better way to start 2021 than with a heavy dose of loving yourself. At the time of year when people are taught to be selfless and giving, telling you to focus on your needs may sound confusing, but hear me out. Holidays can trigger many emotions and bring out depression, especially in women. The good news is, unlike major depression, the holiday blues are temporary, and you can combat them with a positive focus on yourself. In fact, it’s the perfect time to start a new relationship with food. Who says you have to gain the holiday 15? What if you dropped 15 and entered the new decade as your best self. While sweets offer an initial mood boost, that effect is short-term and outweighed by the havoc sugar can wreak on your body. Stop the cycle of eating treats to feel better, only to end up feeling even worse. Replace sugary treats with whole foods in moderate portion sizes limiting mood crashes later. The feeling of power you’ll gain by passing on that candy will be worth it. Holidays can leave you feeling overworked, over-committed and emotionally drained, so it’s imperative to maintain a self-care routine and know your limits. Waking to positive affirmations, morning meditation, a healthy meal and daily exercise are great routines that can help alleviate unwanted stressors and negative emotions. We often hold ourselves to high expectations during holidays which can result in feelings of failure. Be realistic and aware that not everyone is going to get along and everything is not going to be perfect. Let your kids or partner wrap gifts or make a dessert. Surely, they might not be as neat as when you do it, but it will relieve some stress. Perfection is fleeting and not memorable. Make time for yourself by letting go of the idea of the perfection. You just might find that crooked tree, mismatched wrapping or messy cookies the kids did are actually more fun anyway. If you feel overwhelmed, it is okay to say “no thank you” to social obligations, especially activities where you may feel uncomfortable or emotionally vulnerable. Declining an invitation to take care of your mental health is perfectly acceptable, and in some cases necessary. Remember you’re important, and it’s time you start treating yourself with the love and respect you deserve. Sensible Meals distributes healthy, affordable prepared meals nationwide. Eliminating Lower Back Pain The Natural Way

May All Your Dreams Come True This Christmas! Fulfill all your cosmetic wishes with a little help from Dr. Michele Cooper.

WRITTEN BY BILLY BEAUDREAU, PT, DPT, MTC, OCS, FAAOMPT

MOST OF US,

at some point in our life, will

experience lower back pain. Many suffer with pain and limited mobility everyday. We provide a unique prescription of hands-on therapy and therapeutic exercise to reduce your pain to help you live life again with ease. For some it will be a minor inconvenience and will go away on its own in a few days. For others, it can be debilitating and very scary. You start believing that you will need to learn how to live your life with pain that will never go away. Physical Therapy can be a safe, natural cure for your pain. How does lower back pain occur? There can be many causes of lower back pain ranging from minor to serious. More serious injuries are commonly traumatic in nature, resulting from an accident or fall. However, it can also occur from doing something as simple as bending down to tie your shoes in the morning. This causes the

surrounding muscles in the back to tighten up, often causing you to have difficulty with normal everyday movements and relying on medication to get through the day. What can be done about lower back pain? If your back pain just started, try placing ice on it for 10-15 minutes several times a day to help reduce any inflammation. After 1-2 weeks, if you are not feeling better, it's time to seek help from a physical therapist. It is important to get in for treatment early. The longer you wait, the harder injuries are to treat. Why should I try physical therapy first? Physical Therapy provides a unique combination

of hands-on treatment with exercise prescription to eliminate your pain, reduce your need for medications and often unnecessary medical costs, and allow you to live your life free from pain.

December Is The Perfect Time To Plant Trees WRITTEN BY SNOANN WILLETT, LOUISIANA MASTER GARDENER

If shrubs and trees weren’t pruned last month, and Hurricane Zeta didn’t do it for you, there is still time to do so in December. December’s climate in southeast Louisiana is mild with sufficient rainfall. Now is an optimal time to add a new tree, or transplant an existing one, within your home and garden landscape. Research mature sizes of all trees for the appropriate growing space. A 3’ Southern Magnolia in a 3-gallon pot today will grow to be 50’ tall by 30’ wide. Save the house foundation and plumbing by locating trees well away.

No fertilizing until spring and any staking should not constrict the trunk or damage limbs and should be removed after nine months. Choose native trees such as Shumard oak, Drummond red maple, or Sweetgum for fall color. And gifting a tree is a wonderful holiday gesture and activity for the family. Happy Growing!

Chad Roig | Farm Bureau® Insurance Cultivating Deep Roots Chad Roig has deep roots on the Northshore and with Farm Bureau® Insurance Company for whom he is Agency Manager, St. Tammany Parish. He grew up here, graduating from St. Paul’s in 1991 and Southeastern University in 1996. Early in his career, at just 25, he secured a position at Farm Bureau Insurance as an agent. By 2004, his growth within the company yielded a promotion to Agency Manager. Now, Chad leads a team of six agents and four staff members carrying on the company’s 70-year tradition of providing service, value, and products to Farm Bureau members through highly qualified professionals. “I’ve represented Farm Bureau over 22 years because the way we do business is unique,” says Roig. “While we offer home, auto, life and some commercial coverages like many others, we have important distinctions that set up apart. We’re a mutual company, so we’re owned by our policy holders. And the biggest difference is that we keep our overhead low. For instance, you won’t see a slick TV ad for us during the big game. We keep those kinds of costs low so that we can offer inexpensive premiums while still delivering real service from real people who are your neighbors.” Contrary to some beliefs, Chad explains, Farm Bureau can offer insurance to anyone. While the organization was originally set up exclusively for the farming industry, it has branched out in the last 25 years to include insurance and other benefits to everyone. “We still support farming by participating in local junior livestock shows and other industry events, but we’re here for the whole community, supporting events like "Boo Fest," school fundraisers and local charity endeavors. My team and our families live here. Our excellent customer service includes being there for our clients in the office as well as out in the community.” Chad cites an in-house adjuster as another benefit offered by Farm Bureau Insurance, St. Tammany. “Because he works right in our office, it’s fast and easy to communicate with our adjuster and deal with any issues that might arise. There’s just a different level of customer service when the adjuster is on-site and has a local connection to clients. We pride ourselves on providing policyholders with fast, genuine, personal service and claims processing. We echo the mission of the Farm Bureau Insurance Company in Louisiana—caring for customers when they need us most, humbly answering the call to serve our neighbors to protect their way of life, their dreams, and their families.” Farm Bureau® Insurance is located at 635 Falconer Dr. in Covington.
