Love Is All You Need FEBRUARY IS A
month when we celebrate
connections, and Sophisticated Woman follows suit with features that do just that. Our gift guide, cocktails, recipe and fashion spread all revolve around Valentine’s Day. Read how our Enterprising Woman, Tricia Wood Thomas, brought together her career experience and a lifelong passion to build her dream business, Tricia’s Bridal Boutique. Since she helps women look spectacular on the day they celebrate their love, it’s no coincidence that she’s our February cover girl. We also recognize the role our smile has in promoting stronger relationships by highlighting Northshore dental professionals this month. Learn about the local options and specialties each has to offer to fit your personal needs and keep your family healthy and happy. I’m particularly excited to offer you a story on a subject that is near and dear to me – the downtown Ponchatoula shopping district. I love to support the local businesses and find the hidden treasures they hold. This particular story focuses on a resurgence of the art scene including a new art gallery owner and budding artist/educator, Mandy Mae Mongrue of Follow Your Art along with a homecoming for Kalle Siekkinen and his family with the opening of Hemmerling Kalle Gallery. Read the fascinating stories of these amazing talents that are so close to home. And finally, we’ve gotten many inquiries about when we’ll announce our Northshore’s Best winners. We’re tallying the record number of votes we received and all the big announcements will be presented in our April double issue. Stay tuned to see if the businesses and professionals you love have earned the title of The Northshore’s Best!

But true to her faith in God and the whole-hearted determination she’s demonstrated throughout her life, the business that reflects Tricia’s life and loves continues to grow and thrive.

Putting Her Best Foot Forward
cover story
WRITTEN BY JAN WINDHORST PHOTOS BY STEVE RANDON
TRICIA WOOD THOMAS' first love was the thrill of competing in pageants. She says being in the company of strong women and girls taught her to always put her best foot forward and ultimately led her to create an outlet to help other women present the best versions of themselves. Thinking back on her first competition, Tricia recalls waiting breathlessly backstage for her name to be called, anticipating the moment she’d dreamed of for years. The sparkly, fuchsia gown she picked out with her mother gave her the confidence to stride out on stage where she immediately sought the faces of supportive parents Sue and Hubert. “My parents also taught me humility,” she adds. “When we got home, I had to change out of that dress and help with chores in the yard.” Today, Tricia holds the Mrs. Louisiana, United States title along with winning the People’s Choice Award at the nationwide pageant. And although she still loves competing and enjoying close ties with her parents, the years since those early competitions have been filled with many changes and diverse accomplishments. After studying runway and print modeling in New Orleans, Tricia went on to William Carey University earning a BS in Mass Communications with Minors in Public Relations and English. She then entered “the real world” and enjoyed a rewarding career and family. “Life just took over from there. I became a successful pharmaceutical rep, I had my son Tristin, founded a community charity and built a cabin on our family’s acreage in Franklinton so we could be near my parents.” In her most recent turn of life events, Tricia has combined her array of talents and experience to embark on what she feels will be her most fulfilling endeavor yet. After gaining additional business experience working in her and her husband Lane’s company, she felt the need to express herself in a unique way. “I wanted to take all I’d learned and accomplished in my career and use it to encourage women to pursue their dreams as I’ve done. I got down on my knees and prayed, and I felt God telling me to pursue my passion — Tricia’s Bridal Boutique.” Tricia is a self-described hard-working, outgoing personality. “This is what I was born to do, and I’m overjoyed to share my expertise. Most importantly, I’m connecting with and helping other women.” The boutique — which offers bridal fashions, pageant gowns ,special occasion dresses and tuxedos — mirrors Tricia’s sense of Southern style and elegance. Roomy changing areas, cozy antique furniture, chandeliers and champagne are hallmarks of the inviting, Franklinton storefront. Tricia offers the benefits of her unique experience to all, particularly enjoying the private appointments that allow her to bestow individual attention. “I offer different experiences for different tastes. We have private bridal areas so family and friends can participate where we offer mimosas and petits fours, we can provide snacks or light lunches to add to the celebration, or make afterhours appointments to accommodate the busy bride. When she says yes to the dress, we pop the bottle and the champagne flows along with the tears. It’s a very emotional and exciting event.” Tricia provides a trained eye for fashion and a level of personal service customers say they don’t find elsewhere. “Once a few selections are made at an appointment, I get to know each individual, see her style, and then I know just where to go in my extensive inventory to pull unique selections I know she’ll love. I especially like catering to plus size brides. They’re so appreciative of all their beautiful options. When working with pageant girls, I can help pick styles perfect for their age and personality and even give them tips on how to walk and interview. It’s what I do!” Thrilled with the boutique’s early success, the consequences of COVID reached Tricia’s doors in March 2020. “When weddings were canceled and shopping discouraged, the store would be empty and I wondered if I’d lose this blessing God had given me, but I found faith.” As her phone rings and customers enter repeatedly, she beams, “I’m so thankful it’s coming back to life. I have so much to look forward to this year — continuing to serve God at Church of the King, growing my boutique, representing Louisiana in the Mrs. America Pageant and supporting Alzheimer’s awareness in honor of my father. I’m also planning motivational speaking engagements for women’s and girls’ organizations. I want to deliver the message that, like me, their deepest dreams can also come true.” Tricia's Bridal Boutique is located at 952 Washington Street in Franklinton. I was focused on not regaining the 100 pounds I had lost on Sensible Meals when I finally realized that I needed to start from

scratch when it came to taking care of my health. I wanted to feel better—but how? I decided to focus on falling in love with my soul by beginning therapy, meditation and speaking kindly to myself. I started eating foods that nourished my body and discovered I wasn’t stress-eating any longer. I removed foods from my diet that made me feel icky and started eating more of items that made me feel energized. I did not intentionally stop eating foods by labeling them as bad, instead I just ate what made me feel good.
Then grab 1-3 lb. weights. With palms facing forward, raise arms up straight above your head and then swing down and back behind your sides. Do 30 continuous reps.
I became inspired to use my fitness and dance training to start moving my body however it felt most free. The workouts I had been doing just weren't serving me anymore. They were always high energy and very intense. So, I began by choosing inspiring music. Studies find that when you listen to tunes that move you, your brain releases dopamine, a "feel-good" chemical involved in motivation! Listening to music keeps me going for longer periods of time, and it makes my brain slow down and

Addressing Posture Can Help Reduce Neck Pain WRITTEN BY BILLY BEAUDREAU, PT, DPT, MTC, OCS, FAAOMPT
PHYSICAL THERAPISTS ARE
seeing an
increase in the occurrence of neck pain related to working/or using technology. With many of us spending time working on a computer, it is easy to slip into positions of poor posture causing increased stress on the muscles, ligaments, and joints in our neck. This problem has only been made worse with an increased usage of texting and social media. Pain while working at a computer or looking down is caused by a condition called forward head posture. On average, our head weighs between 10-14 pounds, and for every inch that our head tilts forward, we place twice the amount of pressure on our spine. Up to 60 pounds of pressure is placed on our neck when we are looking down at our phones. Clinically, we often see this causing symptoms such as disc protrusions, headaches, and pinched nerves leading to tingling down into the arms. There are some simple adjustments that you can make in your daily lives to help to improve your

Will You Be Karter's Valentine? WRITTEN BY SUSIE KAZNOWITZ, NHS DIRECTOR OF MARKETING
HISTORICALLY, VALENTINE’S DAY
has
been a symbol of loving relationships that can overcome even the most arduous challenges. While traditionally the special day refers to humans, Northshore Humane Society has many deserving but homeless animals at our rescue who are yearning to be your valentine this year! One of those loving animals is Karter, a precious small breed mix whose life was hanging in the balance just a few months ago. Karter was not only abandoned and left homeless at a municipal shelter, she was suffering from heartworm disease — a disease, if left untreated, is always fatal. Due to limited funds and resources, dogs with costly medical needs like Karter are oftentimes at a higher risk for euthanasia. With the support of our community, we are able to rescue and treat dogs at risk every day. Sadly, because many people are unaware of the dire effects of heartworms, we rescue an average of 8 dogs per month with this deadly disease. As a no-kill shelter, we believe every animal deserves

It's Going To Be A Great Year for Tangi! WRITTEN BY ROBBY MILLER, TANGIPAHOA PARISH PRESIDENT
2021 IS GOING
to be a great year for
Tangipahoa Parish, and I hope you feel the excitement that is building for our community! Last year presented so many challenges for our parish, yet, in the midst of those obstacles, we found so many successes! Our sales tax receipts are the highest they’ve ever been, and that’s because of you, who chose to shop at home throughout the year. Our building permits are also reaching new heights, partially due to new construction, but also due to renovations and improvements
Planning for Perennial Gardens WRITTEN BY SNOANN WILLETT, LOUISIANA MASTER GARDENER
to homes and businesses. That’s important because it means we continue to invest in our community. 2020 ended on a high note with the announcement that Medline will soon break ground on a 650,000 square foot distribution center near the Hammond Airport. This project
HOW MANY OF us can name a month of the year by what is blooming? Holly berries in December, camellias in January, paperwhites in February, azaleas in March and the list goes on. Perennial gardening can offer repeat displays over multiple years. Perennials are plants that live more than three years. Trees, shrubs, bulbs and grasses fit this description, but usually gardeners refer to perennials as non-woody, hardy herbaceous plants grown for attractive flowers or foliage. Consider the following for planning a perennial bed. What is your end result? Cut flowers? Dashes of color between existing shrubs or trees? Borders along a fence? Let this be your starting point. Stay In Your Zone: Generally, north of Lake Pontchartrain to Interstate 12 is zone 9a and the area north of I-12 to Shreveport is zone 8b. Choosing plants within your zone offers more success because they are better suited for our humidity, rainfall, and heat. Height: Fall-blooming perennials are generally the tallest and would be placed in the back row, whereas middle-height plants are summer bloomers best placed in the middle of a space. The width of the bed is twice the height of the tallest plant. Bed Size: An average perennial border that can accommodate several species is 6-8 feet wide. Color: Cooler colors — violet, blue, green — make an area seem larger or create distance, whereas warmer colors — red, yellow, orange — display the opposite effect of being smaller and closer. White flowers are neutral, casting a glow when used monochromatically. Maintenance: Perennials require more work including pruning, weeding, thinning, fertilizing, staking, and pest control. You will be rewarded for your efforts. Careful planning can result in something blooming every month. And as a reminder: divide summer flowering bulbs now (but NOT Louisiana irises) and plant groups of gladiolus bulbs in two-week intervals to extend flowering. Happy Growing! 32 Sophisticated Woman | February 2021
represents a $45 million investment in our parish and will add 450 jobs when the facility is at full capacity. The construction impact alone will create 350 new jobs here. Many companies are looking to grow and invest in Tangipahoa Parish in 2021. Our phones ring daily with new inquiries. We are very hopeful that these are early indices of even greater things ahead for our community. There are so many good things happening across our parish, and in 2021, I hope you’ll join me in welcoming this new year and the promise it holds for a brighter tomorrow for all of us. On behalf of our family and our entire Tangipahoa Parish Government team, I hope 2021 finds you happy, healthy, and successful in all that you do. May it be our best year yet!

spotlight on art
Ponchatoula is known for strawberries and antiques but there’s an unlikely
movement emerging during an unlikely time that is turning heads and drawing a new type of visitor. “It doesn’t make any sense that original art is thriving here when other businesses are struggling due to COVID,” says artist and gallery owner Mandy Mongrue, “but I’m thrilled to join this community that’s so supportive among a growing number of new galleries and art related businesses.” An obsession since she was five years old, Mandy only recently took her art to professional status after selling nearly all her inventory at an Art Stroll in 2019. “I
was even more surprised when my phone went crazy with orders from that exposure. My family encouraged me to leave my hospital admin job and take the leap into art full-time.” Ponchatoula First Lady and art veteran, Kim Zabbia, offered Mandy a space to sell her work and conduct art classes. “She is my mentor, and I don’t make a move without her. When this retail space became available, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to move to the main shopping street and open "Follow Your Art" with the support of other artists and businesses. Restaurants and stores allow me to display my works there, and in turn, I feature guest artists here. We’re all working together to build the reputation of this area as an art district.” Mandy’s portfolio is varied in style and palette, but she defines the common thread. “I paint on anything.” Her best sellers are the abstract, “loose and messy” churches and barns in grays and metallics along with her colorful “mashups” featuring a variety of New Orleansthemed items entwined into one piece. Furniture procured in its raw form at neighboring antique shops and painted by her fiancée, Josh Poche, is also popular. In her first 60 days at the new location, Mandy has sold over 500 pieces to customers from New Orleans to Baton Rouge and states as far as California and Florida. “This journey has been scary, but word of mouth has been amazing. There’s a lot of art in the city, but they’re coming here too. City officials, Action News, even Lt. Governor Nunguesser heard about us
Artist: Mandy Mongrue
and visited commending us on being one of the only businesses in the state that opened and expanded during COVID.” Mandy exudes enthusiasm and wonder at the unfolding of her creative enterprise. “I love that I can take so many directions and it’s always different and inspiring. Is this my real life? It’s working!” True to her goal of supporting kindred endeavors, Mandy directs aficionados down the road to the Hemmerling Kalle Gallery where a vortex of artistic spirituality is resurging in the same place a beloved Ponchatoula artist got his start. In 2002, while Jack and Carol Siekkinen were running The Louisiana Furniture & Art Gallery, a nonprofit showroom supporting artists with display space and marketing support, they met Bill Hemmerling. Now renowned for his soul-touching folk art, Hemmerling was inspired to take up painting upon retirement. Unable to afford expensive supplies, he used recycled and discarded objects as a canvas for house paint and wood stain — a technique that would become his hallmark. spotlight on art Carol explains that Hemmerling's appeal was his heartfelt storytelling. The influence of Southern folk culture is reflected in eclectic scenes that often invoke God and promote social harmony. As her family grew to know and love Hemmerling, their mission to share his gift with the world grew — an unimaginable task for the artist’s own childlike sensibilities. “He adopted us, calling Jack ‘Dad’ and spending holidays with us. To address Bill’s substandard housing, Jack built him a living and studio space in the showroom’s adjacent warehouse and our son Kalle built him some furniture.” Having no interest in materialism, Carol says Hemmerling was delighted with the arrangement and describes a typical interaction where her offer of a silverware set was met with the bemused response, “Why would I need more than one fork?” Carol was eager to access a national market for Hemmerling, and says the real fun began when Jazz Fest approved his display booth. “Bill was immediately embraced by the art community and recognized for his incredible talent.” Hemmerling set a Jazz Fest record in 2003, doubled it in 2004, and became the official Jazz Fest poster artist in 2005. Carol’s family went on to open Magazine Street and French Quarter galleries to launch Hemmerling's vision to a melting pot of admirers and clients locally and worldwide. “He was prolific—painting at least one piece a day during his seven-year career." Hemmerling's passion in life was to honor the African American woman in a series he called Sweet Olive representing his vision of hope and peace. That series began with a figure holding a sweet olive branch in one hand and a rosary in the other. Despite his gentle demeanor and messages of unity, Hemmerling's work was not without controversy. Carol reports that three women came into the gallery and felt disrespected because the 2008 Ponchatoula Strawberry festival poster depicted Sweet Olive with no facial features. Hemmerling was brought to tears by this misinterpretation, explaining his intention was to make the face universal, allowing viewer interaction for a more meaningful, inclusive experience. True to his style, he painted his response with similarly styled figures along with a simple but powerful prayer, “Lord bless those who do not understand me. Prayer changes things. Let thy light shine upon my intentions. Amen.” He also sent the gift of a rosary to each woman. Bill Hemmerling’s unassuming and touching style continues to inspire and bless admirers, including Kalle, who served as his protégé until Hemmerling's death in 2009.” As a testament to his ability to bridge race and social status, Jazz Fest producer Quint Davis organized Hemmerling's memorial including a wake at the Magazine Street gallery, funeral at Our Lady of Guadelupe on Rampart Street, and Preservation Hall/Social Aid and Pleasure Club jazz funeral ending at Café du Monde where free coffee and beignets were served to hundreds. Kalle, while influenced by Hemmerling, has clearly come into his own exploring multiple styles. He's built an international clientele and celebrity following including Oprah, Sandra Bullock and Jamie Kern Lima, and exhibits works at such notable galleries as the O Museum on 38 Sophisticated Woman | February 2021

"The message throughout all of my art is love and unity and I hope to one day be a bridge between the races." ~Kalle~ O Street in Washington, DC. Kalle completed a residency there earlier this year painting a mural and designing cover artwork for a Rosa Parks tribute album featuring Smokey Robinson, Aretha Franklin, Jennifer Hudson and other superstars. His work can also be seen in numerous TV shows and movies including NCIS New Orleans and Queen Latifah’s "Girls’ Trip". While carrying on Hemmerling's mission, Kalle’s 2015 Strawberry Festival poster met with a similarly based but more widely covered controversy than Hemmerling's 2008 piece. Media attention as far flung as the BBC and Russian television arose when some locals found it offensive. Kalle says looking back, the controversy was a blessing as it brought awareness to his art and inspired a whole new series of paintings which are now popular among educators and directors of diversity worldwide. “Sale took off and all profits went to the local Kiwanis Club. Every member of the media was supportive which made facing harsh criticism easier to handle. The message throughout all of my art is love and unity and I hope to one day be a bridge between the races.” Kalle was inspired to update the style with notable differences, while still creating original pieces honoring Hemmerling's work. “The figures now have a different vibe. They’re more often children in a variety of bright colors, but still faceless to represent all of us, promoting diversity and inclusion, inviting viewers to complete the scene with their own story.” The new Hemmerling Kalle Gallery in Ponchatoula represents a full-circle homecoming as it is housed in Hemmerling's former living and studio space showcasing Hemmerling's work and Kalle’s growing portfolio. Soon to be opened on site is Jack’s Whistle Stop Café which will also feature their art and be operated by Kalle’s brother, Braden. Of their return to the Northshore, Kalle says the family is thrilled. “We’re happy to bring the gallery and café back to our roots and become part of the art scene that’s gaining momentum here in Ponchatoula.” Sophisticated Woman | February 2021 39
