The Joy of a Meaningful Life WRITTEN BY KIMBERLY BLAKER

ESPECIALLY THESE DAYS, it's easy to lose sight of living a meaningful life. It's an interesting phenomenon the amount of time, energy and money we invest in living healthier, longer and happier lives. Yet, we often still feel unsatisfied, and that our lives are devoid of meaning and purpose. When it comes to living a meaningful life, there's no one-size-fits-all solution. What makes life meaningful is unique to each and every person. So to find meaning, you may need to do some exploration to discover what speaks to you. Meaning can come from many different avenues. Unlike happiness, which stems from receiving or doing things for yourself, meaning comes from giving or doing for others. Perhaps for you, it comes from fostering a close family relationship. For some, it's about choosing a fulfilling career path that involves helping others through teaching, nursing, counseling or coaching. Others find meaning by giving back to their community such as volunteering at the local food bank or mentoring as a Big Brother or Big Sister. Purpose can also come from forming an organization for a national cause that you're passionate about. Or perhaps, taking up a hobby you enjoy, such as gardening — then donating your excess produce to a soup kitchen. But before you begin your journey to explore new avenues for meaning, evaluate what you're doing with your life right now. Perhaps you're already giving in a way you don't even realize and aren't giving yourself enough credit. If so, you may just need to reframe in your mind about what you're already doing and understand that it really does matter. If it still isn't enough to satisfy your

21

quest for a meaningful life, explore other options that are important to you. It's after you've determined what would bring meaning to your life where the challenge most often lies. You must now make a conscious decision and concerted effort to follow through. If you've chosen a challenging path, only you can decide if the sacrifices and risks are worth the reward of a meaningful life. Often our sacrifices and risks are blown way out of proportion. The most significant risk may merely be an unrealistic fear of failure. The greatest sacrifice may be little more than stepping outside your comfort zone or setting aside a little happiness in exchange for something more fulfilling, uplifting and meaningful. If these are the things holding you back, then you can make an effort toward changing your frame of mind. Schedule 20 minutes a day to sit in solitude with your eyes closed, envisioning your meaningful life. Allow yourself to build excitement and desire for that which would bring meaning to you and others. Also, spend some time each day reading or listening to audiobooks and watching online videos relevant to the activity that would bring meaning. If you find that you're still holding yourself back, seek the support of family and friends and ask them to hold you accountable. A counselor or coach can also lend support to help you move toward your goals. Whatever path you choose and regardless of its outcome, give yourself credit for your efforts. Remember, having a meaningful life is often just as much about how you perceive what you do as it is about what actually you do. Sophisticated Woman | January 2021

Alysia expresses her excitement for her new role. “I love geriatrics. It’s always been my favorite population to care for. I look forward to the exciting challenge of helping families take care of loved ones they can no longer care for. Our dedicated memory care facility with 24-hour nurses on duty and a team of caregivers in a vibrant community makes their quality of life so much better.” Alysia credits her team of professionals with making her success possible — Milisa Hubbard-Activities Director, Jessica Baham-Wellness Director and Alaina Poirrier-Business Office Manager. Alysia adds, “This commitment embodies the value we place on the unique qualities and needs of every person in our care. Our experience is the difference. We know Alzheimer’s, we know dementia — it’s our specialty.” Beau Provence upholds their usual high standards throughout the pandemic by maintaining a 96% satisfaction rate — 30 points higher than the national average. Alysia explains, “We safely facilitated family interaction through online video chatting as well as window and gate visits.” To maximize safety, Beau Provence requires masks and temperature checks before entering, and coordinates tours in specific zones at times to assure never taking guests through the midst of residents. In-person appointments are available now, and a virtual tour is offered on their website. Beau Provence is a trusted resource for information, insight and guidance for caregivers. When home is no longer enough for a loved one, their door is open to talk, learn and listen to make finding the right solution as easy as possible. “There’s joy in knowing we can help — from beginning stages to end of life. IN & OUT URGENT CARE MEDICAL DIRECTOR PHYSICIAN PROVIDER Some people spend a lifetime chasing their passion. Often, they are successful at work but not truly happy in life. Dr. Alyssa Lyon has managed to blend her passion for medicine into personal success as well. As the new Medical Director for In & Out Urgent Care, Dr. Alyssa Lyon will bring her passion for caring for patients to four clinics in the New Orleans area, two of which are on the Northshore in Mandeville and Covington. “Our health is the most important thing we possess,” Lyon said. “Our staff is committed to providing urgent access to the answers, information and the care patients need to get on the road to recovery.” Dr. Lyon has made treating acute illness or injury her priority. She spent the past nine years in North Oaks Health System’s Emergency Department, Walk-In Clinics and Occupational Medicine Clinics. She then attended the University of Tennessee, where she was a member of the Lady Volunteers soccer team and the Pride of the Southland Marching Band. After graduation, Dr. Lyon attended LSUHSC School of Medicine in New Orleans and then completed her Emergency Medicine residency at LSU-New Orleans in 2010 and a Sports Medicine Fellowship in 2011. community WHILE OUR AREA is blessed with a proliferation of oak trees – City Park in New Orleans holds the record for the largest stand of oaks in the country at over 200 — Mandeville is the seat of the nation’s crowning jewel as reported by the Live Oak Society. According to Society bylaws, the only human member permitted in the Society is the honorary Chairman, who is responsible for registering and recording live oak members. The requirement for becoming a member is that the live oak have a girth (trunk circumference) of 8 feet or greater, measured 4.5 feet above ground. The Seven Sisters Oak dwarfs that requirement with a girth of nearly 40 feet, a height of nearly 70 feet and a crown spread of nearly 140 feet earning it status as the largest registered tree and the title of President of the Live Oak Society. Its estimated age? As many as 1200 years old. The mighty oak tree carries important symbolism going back to ancient times. Many cultures including the Greeks, Romans, Slavs, Germans and Nordics associated the tree with their lightning and thunder wielding deities with familiar names like Zeus, Jupiter and Thor. Like these storied gods, the oak symbolizes strength, resilience, solidity and truth. It can represent protection and healing, but at the same time, it can be the symbol of justice. Based on their worthiness, those seeking shelter in stormy times would either find salvation or death under the oak tree. Its energy was thought to be healing, offering divine strength, wisdom and courage in overcoming problems, especially in terms of physical health and self-confidence. The oak is anthropogenic, meaning that it is at the root of many creation stories of ancient traditions. Native Americans as well as ancient Celts believe the oak is representative of Mother Earth — nature itself, and the she is the protector and the ruler of all things. The tree was venerated and respected as a source of sustenance, life and peace. These cultures didn’t feel the need to build places of worship, as nature provided it’s own shrine in which to worship the divine. But one doesn’t need a history lesson to experience the magical properties of the sprawling giants. Like the ancients, many modern-day tree lovers experience a natural power of serenity and strength in the presence of these magnificent beings and particularly one as regal as the Mandeville natural wonder. Originally registered at the Live Oak Society as "Doby’s Seven Sisters" in 1968, it was named so because the Doby family owned the property where the tree grew, and Mrs. Doby was one of seven sisters. Prophetically, the tree bears seven huge limbs in a striking coincidence between its shape and the family who would bring it notoriety well into its maturity. Since then, the tree has been renamed "Seven Sisters Oak" and re-registered with the Live Oak Society. And true to its symbolic heritage, it continues to solidly endure, even weathering a potentially devastating near lightning strike during Hurricane Katrina. This fairytale-like oak tree is now lovingly cared for by property owners John and Mary Jane Becker who have resided at the Northshore home for over 13 years. Like the Seven Sisters Oak with its record-breaking trunk and crown, the Celtic tree of life is usually represented by a large oak with long and complicated weaves. The trunk represents the physical world; the roots - a connection to lower worlds, and the branches reaching up — the connection to the heavens. In total, it represents one’s life journey, the paths chosen and the opportunity to grow and change. In Christianity, the Oak is a symbol of Jesus as a power in difficult times — perseverance in faith. During trying times, the tree stays strong, deeply rooted in the ground. In the spirit of what the oak tree has stood for since before history was recorded, the Seven Sisters Oak stands proud and true, remaining an example to her short-lived human companions. Roots planted firmly, honoring traditions and origins yet always reaching, taking what’s needed to continue growing in order to nourish a great capacity for giving back.

In 2005, on a Georgia Interstate, I was the victim of a hit-and-run driver. The accident itself was horrifying. The injuries were bad. The betrayal by my own insurance company was worse. I had a very hefty Uninsured Motorist Policy that would have provided money for the help I needed. Instead of being on my side, my own auto insurance company duped me into signing my rights away for a quick check .

cover story

WRITTEN BY JAN WINDHORST PHOTOS BY STEVE RANDON

HILARY WALKER CREDITS her parents with instilling in her the discipline and importance of education — despite the difficulty of the job. “I was an independent and strong-willed child who constantly tested my parents. I became a young mother at 16, but they supported me and saw to it that I worked hard and completed my education. Those traits that challenged my parents are the ones that make me a successful businessowner today.” Hilary met her husband Chuck at 18 and went on to earn a degree in Early Childhood Education. “Chuck is my greatest supporter. I think back and wonder how I went to school and worked full-time with two kids while pregnant with the third. I certainly couldn’t have done it without his encouragement and help. I’ve always loved young children, and I’ve lived the core value that education is the basis for success in life. It’s now my mission to provide quality childcare here — my way of giving back and influencing the next generation.” Of Hilary, Chuck praises her as one of a kind. “I knew she was special when we first met. She is the most determined person I know and doesn’t stop until the job is done. She’s not a workaholic — family is foremost — but she’s smart, solid and steady and accomplishes everything she sets out to do.” Hilary began teaching at Kidz Klub House in Slidell in 1999. The owner immediately recognized her leadership potential and planted seeds of future ownership. Hilary invested in herself and the community by purchasing the school in 2003, eventually expanding to Madisonville in 2015 and Mandeville in 2020. “I couldn’t maintain my high standards of quality while opening new locations without my team of directors and teachers. I was initially drawn to Kidz Klub House for its fun, educational environment, and we strive to always make it better.” Hilary says the focus is on Kindergarten prep starting as early as six weeks old and continuing through five years old. Students graduate having begun to learn reading and math. Another of Hilary’s lifelong passions — one she shares with Chuck — is fitness. “Sports and fitness are important to a child’s development and happiness as well.” Hilary played soccer in school and is a committed weightlifter; Chuck played college baseball and owns several baseball training facilities in the region; and all three children have played competitive sports. So, it’s no surprise, especially considering Chuck’s entrepreneurial spirit, that the Walkers own multiple Anytime Fitness locations and Peak Fitness in Slidell. They also created the Walker Way Foundation to fund college scholarships for deserving high school students. “We select athletes who are strong leaders with good academic performance. It’s our way to give back.” Hilary is well-served by the healthy habits that help her operate at peak performance in all her endeavors. A typical day starts at 5:30 with a workout. School business then takes over. She is extremely involved in the day-to-day operation visiting each location at least weekly for team meetings, to assess the quality of the environment and education, and improve daily best practices. “It’s rewarding to see our students succeed knowing that the foundation we provide was instrumental in that. Three of our teachers were once students here who embrace the importance of early learning and have returned to pass along that advantage.” The Walker home reflects their priorities as the warm and welcoming space prominently displays smiling family photos and affirming mantras such as, “Together We Have Everything.” Beloved rescue dog Lacey even grins from the frames. Dedication to stable family life, as Hilary’s parents provided her, is evident in their children’s trajectory. Maddie-25, now married to Codey Miller with one-year-old son Miles, earned her degree in Family and Consumer Science working her way up from the kitchen, to teaching, to running the Mandeville location of Kidz Klub House. “She didn’t set out to join the family business, but she’s a natural and earned her place as director. And Miles, my newest joy in life — it’s important I get quality time with him.” Fritz-21 excels at baseball and football at Millsaps College and studies Business and Finance with plans to join the family’s fitness businesses. And while at 17 Allie’s future plans aren’t finalized, she has the benefit of a strong, dedicated and involved family. “We’re all growing and prospering from generations of life-long lessons. It’s not always easy, but through perseverance and hard work, we’ve learned to seize on the opportunities presented to us. We feel it’s our purpose to nurture a passion for making the most out of life — for our children, our students and our community.” Kidz Klub House has three locations: 320 Highway 1077 in Madisonville, 985-206-9889 | 688 E. I-10 Service Road in Slidell, 985-781-8984 and 1853 Lotus Road in Mandeville, 985-778-0642. For more information, visit kidzklubhouse.com. Sophisticated Woman | January 2021 23

YEA! A Head Start for Young Entrepreneurs WRITTEN BY JAN WINDHORST

ISABEL YARBOROUGH IS only 18 years old, but she already has an award-winning business for which she received funding, and a solid plan for her future. At such a young age, how did she develop her vision and achieve goals that many adults still find elusive? One contributing factor was participation in the Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) — an innovative afterschool program where students develop, build, and launch their own business or social enterprise. The nationally proven program offers mentorships and guidance from local business leaders, a dynamic and fun learning environment, and the opportunity for teens to earn real investments to start their business. The program is hosted in partnership with Southeastern Louisiana University and the Louisiana Small Business Development Center at Southeastern. A Covington resident, Isabel is the owner of Flora + Wild, an online, indoor plant market. Her business plan was created and funded locally with the help of YEA! Northshore, and she was also chosen to present her enterprise at the YEA! national competition, much like the format of the TV show Shark Tank. Of her experience with the program she says, “The Young Entrepreneurs Academy has taught me many life skills along with business skills that I can implement for the rest of my life. I have found a career path now — what I want to do for the rest of my life." The experience helps transform local middle and high school students into real, confident entrepreneurs. Through the program, students in grades 6-12 generate business ideas, conduct market research, write business plans, pitch to a panel of investors, and launch their own real enterprise. Graduates often cite valuable connections, newfound business knowledge, and increased overall confidence after completing the program. The nationally successful curriculum connects students with business mentors, provides exciting in and out-of-classroom experiences, and helps enact meaningful personal transformation in their lives. 26 Sophisticated Woman | January 2021

community spotlight YEA! Northshore was founded in 2015 by local business leader Mr. Shelby LaSalle and is one of over 150 chapters in partnership with YEA! National. Today, YEA! has partnerships with several large, significant organizations in the United States, including Southwest Airlines, The Kauffman Foundation, The Saunders Foundation, Sam’s Club, The United States Chamber of Commerce, and many more. To date, more than 7,700 students have launched more than 5,100 operating businesses and non-profits. While the program is open to boys and girls, YEA! Northshore Marketing Coordinator and Southeastern Marketing Instructor Elizabeth McDougal says she appreciates the head start afforded to female participants like Isabel. “Isabel is a perfect example of the advantage young people get from the experience, and I’m happy to recognize the success of young women to the readers of Sophisticated Woman Magazine.” Isabel adds, "As a young, female entrepreneur, I have been blessed with an overwhelming sense of support and mentorship over this journey I’ve been on. Entrepreneurs are crazy dreamers, problem solvers, and risk takers. They stand up after falling

and innovate when a challenge arises. To anyone who has a passion for entrepreneurship, YEA! is a great start to taking the leap.” Elizabeth stresses that students don’t need to have a specific business in mind to join the academy. Part of the process is helping students to fashion their vision whether it be for a profit or non-profit organization. Some additional young women owned businesses and organizations formed at YEA! include Lyndsie Smith’s Rollin’ with Art — a non-profit mobile art studio designed to make art classes accessible to more students; Maggie Tilyou’s Technically Mine — a color-coded device that protects charging cords from fraying while identifying your charging cord and base; and Drew McKee’s Harmony Skate Project— a non-profit skate competition that acts as a fundraiser to rehabilitate and beautify community parks. Elizabeth explains that the program is project based and a blend of different classes and guest speakers where budding entrepreneurs connect with local professionals in key areas including accounting, graphic design, legal, and marketing. “Classes are held in Southeastern’s technology lab where students do research and hash out a business plan that they’ll present to real investors. We also go on field trips to several local businesses and work on the pitch presentations seeking seed money to launch. Each person who successfully completes their pitch gets some kind of investment.” The 2021 session will begin in the fall with registration slated for summer, but Elizabeth says it’s not too early to begin planning to participate as slots fill up quickly. Each class is limited to 25 students to ensure individual attention and safe social distancing. Each accepted applicant receives a 50% reduction in tuition from generous sponsorships given by more than a dozen local businesses, with additional scholarships available based on need. Get Your Annual Muscle Movement Screening WRITTEN BY BILLY BEAUDREAU, PT, DPT, MTC, OCS, FAAOMPT

WE TAKE OUR

cars to a mechanic for

regular maintenance, we see an optometrist each year for our eyes, we see a dentist twice a year, and we likely get screened by a physician each year as well. Would it not also make since to check on the condition of our muscles once a year? Do you have a physical therapist? If not, you should. Physical therapists are experts in our bodies' muscles, bones and joints. It is our responsibility to make sure you are moving correctly. A regular checkup can help to prevent future injuries, as well as treat underlying conditions that may be occurring. Imagine what would happen if we waited five years between dental checkups. One day you might wake up unable to eat because of an issue with your teeth. You go to the dentist to find that it will take a massive procedure and cost lots of money to correct. We see our dentists regularly to avoid these difficult and expensive medical bills. We should treat our movement system the same. A movement screening with a physical therapist can find small weakness in your strength, deficits with our balance and limitations in flexibility. These issues are easy to treat if caught early. However, if conditions are left untreated they could cause major problems for you in the future in the form of lower back pain, knee pain, neck pain etc. If you are looking to live your life free from pain or are ready to finally deal with a pain that may have been going on for some time now, call your physical therapist today to get your annual movement screening scheduled. Take good care of yourself!

Are You Thinking About Removing Your Implants? WRITTEN BY MICHELE COOPER, MD

SCIENCE HAS IDENTIFIED

one of the

contributors to the development of Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma, or ALCL, in patients with breast implants. This is a very rare complication of breast implants occurring in 203 patients per 100 million person-years and related to texturing of the implants with certain brands having higher risk than others. While implants come in both textured and smooth surfaces, smooth implants have not been implicated unless placed after a textured one. Allergan® chose to recall their BIOCELL textured implants as a result of these findings. The FDA and American Society of Plastic Surgeons agreed with their recall, but do NOT recommend removal of implants unless the patient is symptomatic. The first symptom is typically a large seroma or fluid collection in only one breast that significantly increases that breast’s size and is easily noticeable. Treatment involves removing the fluid and testing for CD30 and ALK markers. If confirmed, the recommendation is to remove the implant and the capsule or scar tissue surrounding it. It is important to clarify that the breast itself is not removed, only the implant with scar tissue. For the majority of patients, this is the only treatment needed to fully cure them of this disease. Also, the conversation of breast implant illness has reached an all-time high. There are no markers that can tell us whether or not you have BII, but some patients choose to have their implants removed when they’ve exhausted other options. BII is associated with saline, silicone, smooth and textured implants. Some patients notice improvement with removal while others don’t. Typically, the implant and capsule are removed together and a mastopexy can be done. A cosmetically pleasing result after the removal of implants can be achieved, but it’s best to talk with a board certified plastic surgeon to discuss risk and determine the best course of action.

RAMSEY ROBERTS SIMS was inspired to open a different type of bridal store after shopping for her wedding dress and realizing the magical experience in her mind didn’t match what she received at a handful of stores. And now, I Do Bridal Couture’s elegant and modern bridal shop experience has opened a second location in historic downtown Covington. Her first location opened in Baton Rouge over eight years ago with two simple goals in mind. The first goal was to provide brides, debutantes, and their families the most elegant and fun bridal experience possible. And her second goal was to host some of the world’s best couture bridal gown lines not found at any other store in Louisiana. Her exclusive lines include Monique Lhuillier, Amsale, Anne Barge, Rivini, Galia Lahav, and many others. “Having a large selection of the best dresses that feature mass customization allows brides to find “the” wedding dress tailored to their individuality, style, and vision,” said Ramsey. “I had always loved the Northshore, it felt like a home away from home. When the opportunity presented itself with an amazing location in historic downtown Covington, we thought it was the perfect time to create an elevated experience that Northshore brides would love while providing a little getaway for New Orleans brides with top lines they don’t have.” Another unique feature at I Do Bridal Couture is pampered private suites that ensure brides and their families can relax, exhale, and enjoy one of the most memorable life experiences. Estate Planning For Parents WRITTEN BY CHRISTIE TOURNET

ESTATE PLANNING IS

not useful for the

wealthy only. Rather, Estate Planning can be vital for a new or growing family, or even a single parent. Below, we provide examples of some items Estate Planning can accomplish for parents. Protecting a Minor Child's Inheritance. Many parents are not comfortable with the thought of their 21-year-old child inheriting a lump sum. Thus, to safeguard both the parents' concerns, and the child, a testamentary trust can be established. With that trust, parents can name a responsible trustee to manage the inheritance and to distribute their assets according to their wishes. The child is also protected from any potential creditor claims. Protecting a Minor Child's Upbringing. In the event that both parents passed, or a surviving parent passed, an estate plan can permit appointment of a Guardian. That Guardian would then have custody of the child on a day-to-day basis. Thus, the Guardian is the person entrusted with the responsibility of bringing the child to school, doctor appointments, religious events, and extracurricular activities. Protecting

a

Special

Needs

Beneficiary.

Additionally, if a child has special needs, parents can set up a specific type of testamentary trust that not only ensures that your child continues to receive proper support and care, but also, a Special Needs Trust will be drafted in a way that safeguards the child from being disqualified from, or losing, any public benefits. Other estate planning benefits include: 1) Protecting yourself and your family from costly and time-consuming judicial proceedings in the event of a disability or incapacity, and 2) Planning for the people most important to you. As you consider these planning options, we recommend that you review your non-probate assets, life insurance and retirement plans, and confirm you have the correct beneficiaries designated.
