June is here and it will officially usher in summer. Hopefully, your air conditioners are working because the heat is “on” and we will probably not get any relief until sometime in October, if we are lucky. Of course, I do not know about you, but I will take the warm temperatures over freezing cold ones anytime. This is why I am suited for the south. Now that being said, I certainly hope we do not have a smoldering summer like last year. It was brutal, but whatever temperatures come, we will deal with them.

Also, June brings us Father’s Day!!

This is a day we honor the male role models and head of households in our lives. They hold a very important position because God made them head of the family, with all the responsibilities of providing for and nurturing the family. Hopefully you have a male figure in your life, whether it is a father, grandfather, or a surrogate father, who you can honor.

I wish all our Father’s a great Father’s Day!! And I hope you all have a great start to the summer!! School is officially out, and it is time for some family fun!!

From honoring the incredible fathers and father figures in our lives to celebrating the longest day of the year, June offers a perfect blend of appreciation and joy.

In June, we come together to recognize the fathers and father figures who have shaped our lives. Whether through heartfelt gifts, family gatherings, or simply spending quality time together, this day is dedicated to expressing our gratitude and love for the men who have been our guides, protectors, and supporters.

As we honor our fathers, we also welcome the arrival of summer with the summer solstice. This celebration marks the longest day of the year, a time when the sun shines its brightest and we embrace the warmth and energy of the season. From outdoor picnics to beach days, and sunset gatherings, the solstice invites us to revel in the beauty and abundance of nature.

On the northern shores of Lake Pontchartrain, we are fortunate to have a wealth of opportunities to blend these celebrations. Imagine a Father’s Day picnic by the lake, at Bogue Falaya Park, or maybe anywhere along the Tammany Trace, where the whole family gathers to enjoy the sunshine, share stories, and create lasting memories. Or you can enjoy a solstice evening spent around a bonfire, celebrating the light and joy that summer brings.

At Sophisticated Woman, we say, “Here’s to celebrating the incredible fathers and the vibrant energy of summer. Let’s honor our loved ones, embrace the warmth of the season, and let the good times roll, or of course, laissez les bon temps rouler, into a June filled with love, light, and laughter.”

Richard Moore

Inspiring Senior 14 Sophisticated Woman | June 2024

AN ADVENTUROUS LIFE

For octogenarian Richard Moore, his life’s journey has always been marked by fineness, and sharing his many gifts with our community is our reward.

Born Richard Joseph Moore in Denver Colorado, his Irish family traditions led him into Denver’s Jesuit Catholic High School. With emphasis on English with a required four years Latin and two years of Classical Greek, Richard recalls, “There, among other things, we learned how to write well.”

He eased through the entrance exam and was appointed to the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis. Having studied piano as a child, Richard followed his musical interest when he joined the Naval Academy’s Drum and Bugle Corps as a glockenspiel player.

Traveling with the football team was a welcome break from studies, and on one fateful trip to New Orleans for the Navy-Tulane game, at a postgame party hosted by the Navy League of New Orleans, he met his future wife, Elizabeth Butler. Richard Moore graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1959 with a Degree in Mechanical Engineering, and a year later, he and Elizabeth were married.

rubber feet that were three inches thick. That was so enemy submarines could not get a bearing on our location.” And later, “While stationed in Key West Florida in 1962 during the Cuban Missile Crisis, I served aboard the USS Picuda, a diesel-powered, WWII era submarine. We took aboard eight Navy Seal frogmen, submerged, and headed towards Cuba.  We arrived east of Havana Harbor and the frogmen swam ashore for an unknown mission.  After several hours, the frogmen swam back in the dark of night, guided to the submarine by a red light. We

Much of Richard’s twenty years with the US Navy were spent on diesel and nuclear-powered submarines. His piano playing relieved tensions aboard one nuclear submarine. He explains, “It had a piano with

remained submerged, and at sunrise went into Havana Harbor. I took a round of photographs of the harbor through the periscope and headed back to Key West. When we surfaced, a Cuban boat spotted our submarine and began shooting at us, but no damage occurred.”

Sent by the Navy to the University of Kansas, he obtained a master’s degree in petroleum management. Naval Commander

of the fuel oil storage base in Point Molate on San Francisco Bay, Richard also recalls, “After three years working in the Pen Mexico, ensuring fuel oil supplies for Army, Navy and Air Force, as well as ensuring availability of repair parts for the entire submarine force, I was sent to Puerto Rico and headed up the quality control office there for all military fuels bought by the U.S. from refineries in Virgin Islands, Venezuela, Trinidad, Aruba, Curacao, Bonaire and Mexico.“

While away from home, Elizabeth kept their growing family together, and after retiring from the Navy in 1979, they came back to Louisiana and settled in Covington. For Richard’s post Naval years, he worked in building up the oil resources of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve and served as Superintendent of the Louisiana Offshore Oil Platform.

Switching gears, having participated in a five-year program from the University of Florida, Richard received a master’s degree in Latin, and for nine years taught Latin at the seminary college of St. Joseph Abbey. Of his amazingly varied career, Richard recalls as his most gratifying work experience, teaching future priests at the Benedictine monastery.

Richard’s love of music, and especially the piano, led him to become a member of the Piano Technicians' Guild, and during a period of twenty years he tuned more than 3000 pianos. He performed at events when his wife, Elizabeth Moore was Social Editor for the Times Picayune Newspaper, and over the years, has played the organ for many churches,

Richard’s interests are as varied as his career. Having traveled the rails across the U S, he turned his interest to collecting and assembling model trains. His Latin Lesson Plans were put into a book used to teach both the traditional Catholic Mass as well as the four Novus Ordo, (New Order) Masses. Richard is in the final editing of the Old Testament Book of Psalms, translated from the original Hebrew and Greek into Latin, and is currently

working on another book that translates all 151 psalms into modern day English.

Richard and Elizabeth enjoy their six children and fifteen grandchildren. His advice to young men today, “Pursue what makes you happy. If marriage is your path, choose wisely, have children, and enjoy your family!”

Cuisine & Cocktails

Pear & Ginger Pork Chops

INGREDIENTS

4 – 6 ounce pork chops

Kosher or sea salt and cracked black pepper, to taste

1 tablespoon olive oil

2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar

2 tablespoons unrefined brown sugar

1 cup chicken or vegetable broth

1 tablespoon freshly-grated ginger

1 tablespoon roughly chopped fresh rosemary

1 ripe pear (Bosc or Anjou), roughly chopped or sliced lengthwise

1/2 sweet or yellow onion, sliced into wedges

1 teaspoon corn starch

2 tablespoons cold water

DIRECTIONS

1. Season your pork with salt and pepper. Cut slits into fat along the edge of the pork chop so that it doesn’t curl as you cook it.

2. Heat oil over medium-high heat in a large skillet. Add the pork chops and cook them until browned and just cooked through, about 3–4 minutes per side. Transfer the pork chops to a plate and cover to keep them warm.

3. Add vinegar, brown sugar and fresh rosemary to the skillet. Stir over medium heat until the sugar has dissolved. Simmer until the syrup turns a dark amber color, about 10–20 seconds.

4. Add the broth and bring to a simmer, stirring occasionally. Add the pear slices, ginger and onions. Cook uncovered for about 5 minutes.

5. In a small cup or bowl, whisk the corn starch and cold water together with a fork until the corn starch has fully dissolved. Slowly add it to the simmering sauce in the skillet and stir until the sauce has thickened.

6. Reduce the heat to low and return the pork and any juices to the pan. Spoon the sauce over the pork chops and serve, topping with onions and pears.

Excellence in Action

STEPHEN RUE

Learning, cultivating new ideas and the pursuit of personal betterment to elevate the human condition are hallmarks of Renaissance men that changed the world during Europe’s “rebirth” which sparked great strides in art, science and social justice throughout Western Civilization. Like those forwardthinking men before him, Stephen Rue has spent his life pursuing knowledge and excellence in a wide range of fields, most notably law, all through the lens of serving human dignity and rights. “My primary goal in the practice,” muses Rue, “is to help people not only with legal needs, but also with their personal narratives so they can be better litigants and happier people.” Highly valuing personal development for himself as well as clients, Rue augmented his Loyola law degree with certifications from Harvard Law School - Negotiation and Leadership; LSUProfessional Life Coaching; and the Anthony Robbins University - Life Mastery, among others. He has also authored five books

on divorce and child custody, was invited to write a chapter in motivational speaker Les Brown’s next book and has a forthcoming personal development book of his own, MUST, scheduled for early 2025 release.

Incorporating Eastern ideology into his classical influences, Rue says his mission to continually improve personally and professionally has made him uniquely qualified to take on the thousands of personal injury, family law and criminal defense cases he’s handled in his decorated, 36-year career – especially the difficult and complicated ones. “The Japanese idea of Kaizen is one of never-ending improvement – small daily changes adding up to transformative results over time. It takes real focus to maintain that commitment, but it’s the foundation of success. I’ve ravenously digested hundreds of self-development books and trainings because positive personal narratives and eradicating self-limiting beliefs are key to overcoming challenges both for me and clients. I’m a trial lawyer in court all the time. My clients trust me to advocate for them in issues of smaller scope up through cases of enormous tragedy, such as the local family who lost five children in a car accident, and victims in the fatal Mother’s Day bus crash where 23 were killed. I help people get through unimaginable situations by emphasizing faith and personal strength while offering vast experience and legal expertise. I form long-term relationships with clients to surpass their expectations and help them to a better financial and psychological state than when we first met.”

Rue says his early life was a catalyst for his desire to help people going through life challenges. “I’ve been there. My widowed mom raised me and my sister by herself on an elementary school teacher’s salary. Her dedication to us and our education made us who we are. She was also my inspiration to become an artist. I watched her paint throughout my youth and developed the skill

and desire to get professional training. She’s my superhero.” But as any good Renaissance man knows, while educational and artistic pursuits are important, adding revelry to his curriculum is critical to a well-rounded human experience.

Like his passion for learning, Rue’s fervor for local culture and celebration is impressive. “I’ve served as King of Alla – one of the oldest Mardi Gras krewes, I’m in the Irish Channel Marching Club, and I’m proud to be a member of the Zulu Social Aid and Pleasure Club – the city’s most prestigious African American organization.

Two of my favorite memories are singing in the Gospel Tent at Jazz Fest with the Zulu Ensemble, and for the 100th Anniversary of the krewe, being elected as the first Caucasian Mr. Big Stuff Royal Character in its history.” And if that isn’t testament enough to Rue’s love for letting the good times roll, nothing croons joie de vivre like scootering with the Krewe of the Rolling Elvi in many other iconic Mardi Gras parades.

After serving the Northshore professionally for decades in his Covington office, Rue decided to make his home here. “I’ve matured and sought a life more centered on family, community and nature rather than mere revelry. There’s a great quality of living here, people from all walks of life, and civility and camaraderie in our neighborhoods. It’s rewarding to be involved in the community and support veterans’ organizations and groups like the St. Tammany Chamber, the Covington Business Association,

no-kill animal shelters and the St. Tammany Art Association. I want people to know I’m an available resource they can turn to in legal matters and in life. And if I can’t help them, I’ll be like Nordstroms and find someone who can.” And the community agrees having voted him one of Northshore’s Best Attorney for 2023. As for the future, Rue continues the pursuit of a well-balanced and enlightened life. “I hope to have an art show next year, perhaps at The Art House. I bought a house on West 21st that will be torn down to build my last office, which will include an art gallery.” And Rue entertains no option to slow his personal and professional development. “It’s in my DNA to have a growth mindset. You don’t ask a tree why it continues to grow. People can always change and improve, and I don’t want to squander the opportunity to help them so that they and I can become the people that God intended. Living fully and intentionally - that’s my continuing purpose and mission.”

Building the American Dream

WRITTEN BY CASEY ROBERT PHOTOS BY STEVE RANDON
24 Sophisticated Woman | June 2024

BUILDING A HOME STANDS AS A CORNERSTONE OF THE AMERICAN DREAM, a testament to pride and achievement. Nonetheless, the magnitude of such a deeply personal project can turn this dream into a daunting endeavor. Enter Bobby Hurley, a second-generation builder celebrated for his ability to materialize clients' dream homes through a seamless and gratifying process.

Hurley's journey into the realm of construction was a natural progression. "I grew up around building and was always drawn to it. I’d go to jobs with my dad, who was a builder, and liked it so much, I decided to pursue a degree in Construction Management from LSU.” Following graduation, Hurley embarked on a seven-year tenure as a project manager in the commercial sector, "I learned how to work with architects, engineers, and owners in the commercial industry. This experience assisted me in developing skills that aided in project management, budgeting, managing expectations — a skill set instrumental in enhancing the residential projects undertaken by Hurley Homes since 2003."

"Other skills that Hurley says are invaluable and most appreciated by his clients are his attentive listening and a talent for organization. Our process beings with identifying the unique requirements of each client, gradually refining their design concept," he explains. "We understand that clients may not always articulate their precise needs initially. Our Design-Build processes help to create

clarity of vision early on, allowing us to generate a plan and realistic budget. I’m very detail oriented by nature and that is key to a smooth process.” Hurley says that practices like managing the materials selection process early on, clear communications and being proactive in giving clients notice on decision timelines help to avoid anxiety, frustration, and budget surprises. “Of course, cost management is an extremely important satisfaction factor. No one likes making lastminute decisions, and we do not spend a penny that the client hasn’t pre-approved.”

Years of honing his craft have borne testament to Hurley's design-build approach, leaving a trail of satisfied clients in its wake. Shelley Richards, in a recent testimonial, shares, “To say that Bobby is an amazing builder is an understatement! He totally exceeded our expectations… through the design and drafting of the plans, and working through the small challenges during construction, he was there for us to advise us along the way... He went above and beyond to accommodate our vision... His communication skills and professionalism are unmatched. The quality and workmanship of his subs were exceptional, and we were most impressed by his ability to complete and manage the project efficiently without delays finishing ahead of schedule.”

Hurley reciprocates the value of his professional partners by acknowledging the indispensable role played by these seasoned collaborators. "Our longstanding partnerships with contractors and suppliers form the backbone of our operations," he says. "Consistency and quality are non-negotiable, ensuring each project is executed seamlessly and ensures our clients are always happy. — Happy clients are my main goal.”

Film in St. Tammany Parish

Film in St. Tammany Parish Fiona McQuinn, Audaciously

I met Fiona during the Abita Springs International Film Fest, where she is an organizing committee member. Her passion for film and authentic storytelling serves as a powerful magnet, drawing the boldest and best out of everyone around her. In Louisiana’s vibrant film scene, Fiona McQuinn stands as a transformative figure. From her early days as a model, to establishing a notable presence in the St Tammany Parish film community, Fiona’s career has been characterized by her passion for authentic, character-driven storytelling. By producing indie films like Tri-Legacy’s short, “Earth Beneath Me,” Tri-Legacy has established a notable presence in St. Tammany Parish. Now, as she and her partners, Micheal D. Anglin and Paul Tuger, grow Tri-Legacy Films, they aim to craft more narratives that resonate deeply with the human experience.

Fiona’s entry into the film industry was sparked by her transition from modeling to hosting a local travel show during the early days of YouTube. This exposure led her to serious acting roles, where she began nurturing a passion for filmmaking. Her background as an actress, director, writer, and dancer provides her with a unique perspective, enabling her to create films that resonate profoundly. Tri-Legacy Films was born from a vision Fiona shares with her two business partners, to create a local hub for filmmaking in St. Tammany Parish that emphasizes genuine stories and deep character arcs. The studio aims to harness local talent and stories, evident in their current projects, including a feature production by partner Michael Anglin and a short film. These productions highlight Tri-Legacy’s commitment to films that are not only entertaining, but also deeply reflective of real human emotions and experiences.

Throughout her career, Fiona has been influenced by mentors such as Ava DuVernay and Agnieszka Holland, whose dedication to depth and authenticity in filmmaking has greatly inspired her. Their mentorship emphasized the importance of creating strong, character-driven content, a philosophy that Fiona carries into every project at Tri-Legacy

Films. Insights from these influential figures have shaped her approach, ensuring that each film produced resonates with authenticity and emotional depth. Fiona aims to steer TriLegacy Films toward becoming a beacon of innovative storytelling within the film industry. Her focus on character and story aims to produce films that are culturally relevant and imbued with genuine emotional truth, using the unique backdrop of St. Tammany Parish. This approach is designed to inspire other filmmakers to pursue impactful storytelling. For Fiona McQuinn, audacity is a foundational principle that has guided her career and now shapes the ethos of Tri-Legacy Films. Audacity,

in Fiona’s philosophy, is about daring to dream big, challenge norms, and push the boundaries of creative expression. It’s this approach that has allowed her to carve out a unique space in the film industry, particularly in the indie scene where conventional resources are limited but creativity is boundless. Fiona employs audacity by tackling subjects others might shy away from, whether due to their complexity or niche appeal. She believes in the power of film to entertain, provoke thought, stir emotions, and inspire change. This is evident in TriLegacy’s commitment to producing characterdriven stories that delve deep into the human experience, exploring themes of resilience, identity, and transformation.

As a leader, Fiona’s audacity is not just about opening doors for underrepresented voices but actively seeking them out, ensuring that the films produced under her guidance reflect

a wide spectrum of perspectives. This bold leadership style is developing Tri-Legacy Films into a beacon for aspiring filmmakers who are eager to tell stories that might otherwise remain untold. Fiona’s advice to aspiring filmmakers revolves around the theme of audacity. She encourages them to network relentlessly, present their ideas boldly, and never fear rejection. Her initiatives, such as mentorship programs and film workshops, are designed to instill a sense of boldness in young creatives, empowering them to take charge of their artistic journeys. By embracing and advocating for audacity, Fiona McQuinn not only defines her legacy in film but also inspires a new generation of filmmakers to pursue their visions with boldness and integrity. As Fiona McQuinn continues to innovate with Tri-Legacy Films, her journey encapsulates the power of following one’s passion and leveraging community support in the creative process.

Sitting down with Michael Anglin and Paul Tuger, two of the creative minds behind the successful new St. Tammany film company, Tri-Legacy Films, was a delightful experience. Along with their partner Fiona McQuinn, they express their shared passion for crafting deep, multi-dimensional characters and impactful stories through film. Our conversation revealed that we all have much in common, especially in our dedication to meaningful storytelling. This focus on creating strong male role models is particularly relevant as we celebrate Father’s Day.

Michael’s path started far from Hollywood, in the unexpected world of fine furniture building. Explaining to me how it’s not so drastically different from film, Michael said, “Fine furniture, like film, endures, and like movies, it can have a positive influence on the future.” Michael’s transition to the film industry saw him spend four years at a regional film studio, contributing to notable projects like Tom Hanks' Greyhound. It was during this time that Michael realized the depth of his love for storytelling. Sharing his thoughts on today’s film industry, Michael critiqued the current rapid pace in the production of films which has manifested films deeply lacking depth and character development. “You know, I bonded with my mom over movies. We went to the dollar theater together and saw lots of films, especially those coming out of New Orleans. Those experiences shaped my desire to create films with heart and substance,” he explained passionately.

Their company, Tri-Legacy Films, was born of the synergy between Michael, Paul, and Fiona. Their first collaboration, Cedar Creek, was a testament to their aligned vision and dedication to storytelling. Despite their diverse backgrounds, they united in their desire to create films that have a positive impact. “At the heart of our work is a commitment to crafting films that impact audiences positively, especially children,” Michael explained. Their focus on characterdriven stories that offer emotional depth and moral substance sets them apart in the industry. Their upcoming feature is comedy that embodies their philosophy of meaningful, impactful storytelling.

It’s a project they hope will resonate with audiences and provide a much-needed sense of connection and understanding.

By channeling their personal experiences into their films, both Michael and Paul strive to create narratives that reflect the father figures they imagined. “Writing our childhood into our movies allows us to maybe create the father figures, the male role models we lacked,” Paul said. Their films are designed to inspire and offer hope, providing emotional nourishment.

The journey of Michael Anglin and Paul Tuger is a testament to the enduring power of storytelling. By creating well-developed characters and memorable male role models, they are not only creating films but crafting a legacy that will resonate for generations. Their stories and characters offer audiences a sense of belonging, understanding, and hope, reminding us all of the importance of strong, positive role models. This Father’s Day, we celebrate and honor the male role models in our own lives.

Local Philanthropist Gains National Recognition for Fighting Child Abuse in Louisiana

Steve Tujague , founder of the IJN Foundation (In Jesus’ Name), will receive the “Community Philanthropy Leadership Award” at the 2024 National Children’s Alliance Leadership Conference in Washington D.C. on June 3rd. Selected from numerous nominations across 1,100 Children's Advocacy Centers nationwide, Tujague is one of only eight award recipients to be honored at this year’s event. These individuals represent the CAC movement’s most innovative leaders, dedicated champions and devoted volunteers.

For nearly three decades, Tujague worked in various capacities with the prestigious Boh Brothers family of companies. He eventually acquired and ran Boh Environmental, FPU Systems, which designed and constructed Department of Defense Command Centers and patented container systems for the military. It later became a global business. Following a successful and fulfilling career, Tujague felt a greater calling to serve his community as he stepped into retirement. He and his family established The IJN Foundation (In Jesus’ Name) to empower organizations across Southeast Louisiana, focusing on initiatives such as child exploitation justice and recovery, human trafficking prevention, and mentorship programs.

Over the last seven years, Tujague has contributed over $1.5 million to CACs across Louisiana and the state chapter – all given In Jesus’ Name. More than $1.15 million of that contribution was given to Children’s Advocacy Center - Hope House, an independent nonprofit organization dedicated to ending the cycle of child abuse in St. Tammany and Washington Parishes. Tujague’s efforts have resulted in incredible growth, development, and most importantly, positive outcomes of justice and recovery for child abuse victims across the state, and particularly the Northshore.

“While many might perceive the amount given as the most noteworthy factor in Mr. Tujague’s story of partnership, even more incredible is how the gifts were delivered. Mr. Tujague wishes for no personal acknowledgment, praise or recognition. He has only one request, that you acknowledge the gift In Jesus’ Name. He has truly been a beacon of hope and an example of Christ’s love in the lives of countless children,” said Thomas Mitchell, Executive Director of CAC - Hope House.

In 2018, during a time when Hope House faced significant financial hardships, Tujague changed the trajectory of the organization forever. That same year, Hope House received a call that a local family wished to create a matching campaign for the organization. After learning about Hope House’s mission, Tujague pledged $150,000 in matching funds for every dollar raised in the organization’s signature annual fundraiser, Men Who Cook. This would prove to be a catalyst for Hope House’s growth and financial stability, rallying countless community members and stakeholders to take ownership of the recovery of local child abuse victims.

Through funding received In Jesus’ Name, Hope House has been empowered to expand operations, programs, staff and services for the increasing number of child abuse victims –more than 2,500 children since 2018 – served on the Northshore. In 2019, with Tujague’s support, Hope House launched Play It Safe, an evidence-informed child abuse prevention training that is offered free of charge to local schools and organizations serving children.

Since then, Hope House has trained more than 1,700 local children in body safety and abuse prevention. In 2020, Hope House expanded with a 1,250-sq-ft. renovation to increase its trauma counseling services. In 2023, Tujague provided financial support for Hope House to open a new, state-of-the-art CAC in Bogalusa, one of Louisiana’s most impoverished cities. Additionally, with Tujague’s help, Hope House has strengthened its forensic medical programming, created robust vicarious trauma resources, increased staff retention programs, and empowered multidisciplinary partner agencies such as law enforcement and the Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services with advanced training in trauma-informed care and best practices in investigations.

Furthermore, Tujague was instrumental in saving the state’s CAC chapter while advocating for state legislative funding for all CACs in Louisiana. Prior to 2021, Louisiana was one of seven states in the country lacking state legislative support, despite being statutorily defined and mandated. Tujague worked with state leaders to secure funding for child abuse and trafficking victims.

Cyber Security Tips

Your smartphone might be the most important piece of technology you own. Your life is in there: online banking, getting directions, making payments, private texts, personal photos and calls. That’s why you have to make sure it’s as secure as possible – and one of the ways to do that is to make sure you aren’t using an outdated phone.

Smart phones need to be replaced for the sake of safety. A good rule of thumb is every three years. If the phone is over three years old, chances are it is no longer getting security updates from the manufacturer. Also, be sure to apply the updates when they become available for your smartphone. Buy a new phone before your current phone is no longer supported by the manufacturer. Make sure you aren’t giving your old phones to your kids, parents or other family members. One last thing: make sure you completely wipe your phone before donating or recycling it. Here’s how:

1. Back up your data

2. Encrypt your data on the device (if you haven’t already)

3. Remove your account

4. Perform a factory reset

If you have any questions about cyber security or some other IT-related issues, please give us a call.
