So Much To Celebrate I HOPE YOU
are enjoying spring and all
the special things to look forward to in our May issue starting with our cover story. During her photo shoot, I got to spend some time getting to know Jessica of Bushels and Pecks Photography. I must admit that this brought back lots of good memories of my past photography days with Olan Mills Portrait Studios. Make sure to read her full story on page 22 and learn about her unique way of working with children to bring out their individual personalities. Each month I find myself beyond grateful to be able to curate this magazine and encounter strong and amazing women along the way, but particularly so in May when we traditionally celebrate the previous year’s cover girls at our annual "Hats Off" Luncheon. Because last year’s luncheon had to be cancelled, we were unable to recognize our 2019 Enterprising Women. But that just makes this year’s event that much more festive as we honor them and 2019’s Enterprising Woman of the Year, Bri Steilberg, along with revealing the 2020 Enterprising Woman of the Year. I invite you to join us on May 14 and meet the dynamic speakers from our charity beneficiary, Token of Love Foundation, whose mission it is to help victims of domestic abuse and addiction. See page 36 or visit sophisticatedwoman.com for details and ticket information. And let’s not forget that May is also for honoring the wonderful mothers in our lives. Make this year more memorable by thinking outside of the box with suggestions from our Mother’s Day features as well as our Gift Ideas for Mom. We also highlight a special recipe and cocktails for a fun way to pamper mom, spend time with the family or take a little time out for yourself. Enjoy!

Magnificent May
Mother May I?
happy mother's day
WRITTEN BY KIMBERLY BLAKER
T
he role of mothers in shaping their childrens' lives is unsurpassed. Mothers teach us to
love, be strong, be confident, persist, live life to its fullest and be the best we can be. Check out these creative and thoughtful ideas to celebrate Mom!
Mother’s Day Brunch – Serve your mom a delicious breakfast or take her out for brunch. If you prepare it yourself, choose her favorites and maybe even present her with a breakfast mimosa cocktail. Also, don't forget the fresh cut flowers for the table centerpiece.
Spring Blooms - Pick up her favorite annuals and perennials: begonias, petunias, violets, morning glories, poppies, marigolds, snapdragons, or mums. You can even enjoy a relaxing day together, planting and sprucing up her flower garden and catching up on old times.
Mother/Daughter or Mother/Son Memories – Give your mom a keepsake that will be dear to her heart. Create your own memory book. Include photos and memories about special times you have had together. Reflect on the memories about your mother from your childhood and how she has inspired you and look forward to spending time with her in the future.
The Main Event – Surprise your mother with tickets to an event she's been longing to see: the ballet, a concert, play or musical, the opera, a favorite sporting event, a comedy show or dinner theater.
Train Excursion – Spring is the perfect time to tour the countryside by train. Take a journey with your mom and enjoy the vivid colors of blue skies, beautiful blossoms, and other scenic sights from a perfect perspective.
Family Portrait – If your family is like most, you're well overdue for an updated family portrait. Have your family's picture taken at a studio or do a photo shoot in the park. Coordinate plans with family members in advance on dress code and theme. Let your mom know how to dress, but keep it a surprise!
The Power of Poetry – You don't need to be a poet to write a special verse for your mother. In your poem, share what it was like growing up with her, how she influenced your life, or tell her just how special she is to you. Then print it on stationery, and matte and frame it.
A Little Pampering – Mothers spend many years pampering and taking care of their children. It's time to return the favor! A gift certificate for pampering at a spa where she can enjoy a massage or a sea spa manicure and pedicure, an appointment to get her hair styled at her favorite salon, or a soothing facial at a medispa are all gifts that she deserves and loves.
Weekend Getaway – Put together a weekend package designed especially for your mom. Choose a city that offers excellent shopping, art museums and cultural centers — or even a quaint historic town with unique shops, cafes and parks.
Keep it Simple – Plan a relaxing day together enjoying the outdoors. Head to a nearby park where you can meander along nature trails, take a scenic bike ride or even have a picnic. Whatever you choose to do for mom, this year give her a gift from your heart and your undivided time to make it a special day she will always treasure. In 2005, on a Georgia Interstate, I was the victim of a hit-and-run driver. The accident itself was horrifying. The injuries were bad. The betrayal by my own insurance company was worse. I had a very hefty Uninsured Motorist Policy that would have provided money for the help I needed. Instead of being on my side, my own auto insurance company duped me into signing my rights away for a quick check .

Summer Getaway Close to Home! LOOKING FOR NEW
summer adventures close to home? An amazing amusement park/entertainment center/food and shopping
complex awaits just about three hours from the Northshore. You may already know about OWA in Foley, Alabama, but this season’s new attractions take the experience to new heights. Kristin Hellmich, Director of Marketing and Public Relations for the nearby resort explains, “We’ve had phenomenal growth since our opening in 2017 with many new additions and have several special events for this summer. For Mother’s Day weekend, we’re thrilled to host the Gulf Coast Hot Air Balloon Festival. And on Memorial Day weekend, we’re kicking off summer with a fireworks show and much more.” On Thursday, May 6, from 6-8 pm, the Balloon Glow Kickoff Event previews the weekend's festivities. The festival runs Friday through Sunday, May 7-9 with more than 40 floating works of art soaring through the skies at dawn and dusk each day— wind and weather permitting. The Memorial Day Summer Kickoff, starting May 29, will include live music at OWA's Island Amphitheater and a variety of activities including kids’ crafts and games for the entire family. OWA is owned by the Poarch Band of Creek Indians, and the name is inspired from the Muscogee Creek language meaning “big water.” OWA also promises big fun with over 520 acres of entertainment. OWA offers 24 rides and attractions including a breathtaking roller coaster, 44,000 square feet of retail, dining and entertainment space, a 90,000-square-foot indoor events center and a 14-acre lake at the heart of it all. “Rolling Thunder is our roller coaster for thrill seekers,” explains Hellmich. “Mystic Mansion is our indoor dark ride – a perfect way to cool down. And we’ve recently added the Wacky Water splash pad – a kids’ favorite. We bring in high-caliber entertainment and spectacular special events to make sure we offer excitement for everyone.“ Downtown OWA is a free-access resort with shopping, food and two live entertainment venues. LEGENDS in Concert celebrates Las Vegas with tributes to Elvis, Sinatra, Lady Gaga and Cher through May in a 420-seat venue. “The tribute characters regularly change, so if you’ve seen the spring show, the new summer lineup is coming soon,” says Hellmich. “And don’t miss Brandon Styles. His theater is the ultimate performance space to view awe-inspiring shows with 60 minutes of high-energy entertainment from impressions to comedy, magic and more.” 18 Sophisticated Woman | May 2021
getaway feature Along with many enticing shopping opportunities, OWA, owned by the only federally recognized Native American tribe in Alabama, is particularly proud to welcome Native Treasures. Featuring works of tribal artisans including beading and carving, it’s a rare opportunity to enjoy handmade, authentic and inspired products from tribes all over the United States. Touting OWA’s wide range of craveable food, Hellmich touches on new additions. “Paula Dean’s Family Kitchen is a crowd favorite where tables share entrees and appetizers family style. Coco’s Italian Ice is a great dairy free option for a sweet treat. And, Alabama’s top sports bar, The Groovy Goat, is now open. Another new option is the Sassy Bass Amazin’ Grill, offering great seafood dishes.” When asked about OWA’s impressive growth, Hellmich replies, “Despite facing last year’s challenges, people just want to get out and have fun. OWA creates the environment to make much-needed family memories. People want to experience the exciting momentum that’s going on here.” Happy guests agree that OWA is worth repeat visits, “It’s perfect for all ages. Plenty to do with little ones and still fun for grown-ups.” “We took our boys for the first time and had a great time! They keep asking when we are going back.” “My family of seven had an absolute blast today. Staff was very cheerful. We’ll definitely return.” Whether first time visitors or frequent repeats, Hellmich invites and encourages their Louisiana neighbors to visit OWA and discover all the fun and adventure that is waiting just a short drive away. The Park at OWA is located at 1501 South OWA Boulevard in Foley, Alabama. For more information, please call 251-923-2111 or browse our website: visitowa.com

The adage, “The eyes are the windows to the soul,” has been credited to many including Shakespeare, da Vinci and Cicero. But no matter who said it first,
it’s an ageless truth that Jessica Robicheaux has made her life’s work. Jessica is part artist and part philosopher, but foremost a mom who began capturing the essence of her children’s personality through photography. Now it’s her gift to other parents who want more than the standard, "say-cheese" snapshot to document the complexity of their little treasures. While Jessica chose to leave teaching, that experience is a large part of her ability to connect with children, making them comfortable in revealing their true character. “It’s simple,” says the endearing and enthusiastic entrepreneur. “I just talk to them. I ask questions and as they think and talk, they make natural – and adorable expressions. That and snacks. Snacks are good.”
Encouraged by a supportive mother who saw her eye for photography, Jessica was an avid hobbyist by age 12. “I remember having disposable and Polaroid cameras, and being in awe of photos in fashion magazines like Vogue. I graduated in marketing from LSU and even did an internship at Sophisticated Woman in 2006.” After a brief foray to Houston, Jessica quickly returned home. “I’m just a Louisiana girl and came right back. But, not living in a big city, I thought it more practical to teach, so I earned a Master of Elementary Education from Southeastern.” Jessica taught third grade in St. Tammany and married husband, Sean, who is a CPA. They have since welcomed two children who inspired her to trade in the idea of practicality for her longstanding passion. Jessica’s style and vision have grown along with Colton and Avery, now five and two. Not yet owning lighting equipment, she shot outdoors when photographing her newborn son. As her obsession grew, she put up a backdrop and taught herself studio lighting in a spare bedroom. While taking a year off after Avery’s birth, Jessica decided that she wouldn’t return to teaching, but to the calling she couldn’t deny children’s portraiture. “I found studio space in Mandeville near the lakefront that I love so much, and by word of mouth and social media, my clients found me. When I got new equipment, I’d bribe Colton with ice cream to help me test it. It’s a balancing act to juggle business and home life, but I know the studio will be a great childhood memory for them. As they get older, my focus has also matured.” Now Jessica serves as families’ documentarian. “I want them to come in year after year, even through high school.” The key to repeat business, says Jessica, is the environment that she creates. “It’s stress free and fun for everyone. It’s not a timed business transaction – not rushed. They say I have the patience of a saint, and I do. Being a mom, I relate to the importance of capturing these precious, fleeting memories and making the process joyful.” So important are Jessica’s childhood memories to her that she named her business after a treasured one. “My grandmother would always sing a Doris Day song to my mom. My mom sang it to me, and I sing it to my kids now. It goes, ‘I love you, a bushel and a peck,’ and represents the generational passage of love and memories. I’m doing that with my camera now, thus the name Bushels and Pecks.” As word spreads of her playful approach and the unique images she coaxes from her small subjects, Jessica’s popularity grows. She has won The Northshore’s Best Photographer for both years her Girod Street studio has been opened. When asked how she measures success, she beams with pride, “One mom said, ‘You won’t be able to get rid of us now.’ Another said, ‘I can’t look at your photos without crying.’ I have six-year-olds that I’ve photographed since birth. Those families feel like my family.” Outside the studio, Jessica enjoys the flexibility her vocation affords her. “It’s important that I’m a part of the Old Mandeville Business Association, a room mom, attend my son’s games and that we spend time at home around the dinner table. I also plan to mentor photographers starting their first business.” Part artist, part philosopher and foremost a mom, Jessica leaves us with her personal truth. “I feel so blessed. It’s true that when you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life!” Bushels & Pecks Photography is located at 413 Girod Street in Mandeville. Celia feels privileged to have REVIVED AND IMPROVED this piece of St. Tammany history over the last FOUR DECADES. “This was the PERFECT OASIS to raise my children." When contemplating the addition of a back room, Celia consulted the previous owner’s aunt who’d been born in the house. Relating the story of an unfortunate incident involving a blind caretaker, gunpowder and the destruction of the original back room, ‘Aunt Hazel’ gave her enthusiastic approval for the room’s restoration. Celia’s prized Steinway was a welcomed inhabitant as the home had originally contained a piano. Despite the humble name, the back room is a masterpiece of Celia’s form-follows-function vision. Heart pine floors milled to match the originals hold a dining area, sitting area with a stately fireplace and the magnificent black concert grand, all ringed by walls of bookshelves and windows. The view encompasses the pool area, courtyard and other outbuildings including the oversized, three-car garage crowned with 520-square-foot playroom, also designed by Matt Voelkel, and the “barn” which includes two large workshops, an office, storage, utility area and fully furnished 576-square-foot guest apartment. Celia feels privileged to have revived and improved this piece of St. Tammany history over the last four decades. “This was the perfect oasis to raise my children - the scene of epic holiday celebrations, an outdoor paradise with acres of space, a historic site where we’ve held charity galas including Harvest Cup events, many poolside parties and even a few dream-come-true weddings. I’ll be sad to leave, but I know the work and love I’ve put into the house and grounds will serve the next family as beautifully as it’s served mine.” This property, MLS# 2295723, is listed by Stephanie N. Hormone Health For A Better Life WRITTEN BY MICHELE COOPER, MD
AS A PLASTIC SURGEON, I find it interesting that many of the incoming patient complaints stem from issues with hormone health. Men and women experience gradual changes in their hormones with age. Common symptoms of hormone imbalance include the following: reduced mental focus and memory, lack of energy, difficulty sleeping, decreased muscle strength, weight gain, joint pain, and reduced sexual desire and performance. For women, skin changes occur more dramatically leading up to menopause, as estrogen helps keep the skin plumped and less wrinkled. Those changes are reflected in cosmetic consults, for example: liposuction for weight gain; eyelid surgery because the patient feels and looks tired; facelifts; and arm lifts due to changes in the skin quality. The BioTE® program we offer uses bio-identical testosterone and estrogen pellets placed under the skin to gradually replace hormones over four to six months. Balanced hormones improve all of the problems listed above, but most importantly, they are beneficial to longevity and quality of life by improving bone, brain, and heart health while increasing energy and libido, and improving deep sleep. I have been using BioTE® for many years as part of my personal anti-aging and wellness program. I decided my patients needed more than just a topical fix for their aging, so I added BioTE® to the programs that we offer. There is no question that hormone health is critically important to men and women to keep looking and feeling their best. The pellet is easy, convenient and effective. Additionally, pellets have the lowest risk profile out of other hormone replenishment options. Schedule a screening and lab work to determine if you are a candidate. The results may surprise you and change your life!

Reduce Your Risk For Lower Back Pain WRITTEN BY BILLY BEAUDREAU, PT, DPT, MTC, OCS, FAAOMPT
IT HAS BEEN estimated that 80% of people will experience lower back pain at some point in their life. The fact that lower back pain is so common in the general population might make you feel as if you’re powerless to do anything to stop it from occurring. This can prove to be one of the biggest mistakes you can make — as failing to take any action whatsoever is certain to only make matters worse. If you’re concerned about your chances of confronting back pain at some point, the best strategy you can devise is to make smart modifications to your lifestyle. While there are no guarantees that any lifestyle changes will completely eliminate your risk, following these tips is sure to have a significant impact on reducing back pain: 1. Become more physically active. 2. Maintain a healthy weight. 3. Stop smoking. 4. Minimize excessive stress on the spine. 5. Reduce stress levels. 6. Avoid excessive walking in high heels. 7. Minimize carrying heavy handbags, etc. If you need additional motivation, you should notice that perhaps the best part of these lifestyle changes is that they do not only apply to lower back pain risk. These are healthy behaviors in general that will lead to a number of other benefits in your life that can improve your health while also lowering your risk of experiencing back pain. You can reduce your risk for lower back pain by altering your lifestyle. However, if you are already experiencing pain, a comprehensive physical therapy evaluation can help you feel better and live your life again with ease.

Giving Buddha A Second Chance WRITTEN BY SUSIE KAZNOWITZ, NHS DIRECTOR OF MARKETING
AFTER SEVERAL MONTHS
of treatment,
Buddha is still fighting for his life! When Buddha was found homeless, he had a severe, open laceration spanning his entire neck. The rescue team at Northshore Humane Society immediately moved into action to give him the medical care he desperately deserved. Over the last several months, Buddha has received around-the-clock care by our surgery department. He has also gone through multiple surgeries to close his wounds, all without any luck. Our medical team had tried everything possible but nothing was working. It was at this time that we had to make a decision about Buddha’s future. Do we take a leap of faith and send him for advanced medical treatment or would euthanasia be his best option? As a no-kill rescue, we believe in trying everything we can for an animal in need and so his second chance journey continued. Buddha is now seeing a specialist where he

There are still so many homeless animals just like Buddha who need your help. They will require months of treatment to not only heal their bodies, but also their broken hearts. Please consider making a donation so that Buddha and animals just like Buddha are given a second chance and an opportunity at a life worth living.
