The Northshore’s Best

to navigate through different "norms," we are reminded that change and adaption are key elements for continued success.

And Justice For All

And speaking of continued success, this month we would love for you to get to know our September Enterprising Woman, Ellen Creel. With a long history of scholastic and professional achievements, this local attorney has served our community with intelligence, professionalism and compassion. On page 22, read about her hard work and dedication to perform her life’s mission, including plans to run for a local judgeship. Also this month, we showcase some of our finest Northshore attorneys who can help manage all types of legal situations. From family law to estate planning to business development, the Northshore offers an abundance of talented attorneys who are ready to help when you need advice. We also recognize a group of volunteers who stand ready to provide a voice for children in court and invite you to read about the important work of CASA. Our Home Feature this month is like no other. It takes us “Off Da Grid” to a unique, Louisiana getaway in Ponchatoula on Bedico Creek. Rebekah and Lee Parrish share the swampy inspiration for their rustic retreat and the one-in-a-million family discovery that has caused them to give up their dream home for something even dearer to their heart. In our fashion feature, I know you'll enjoy our “Classic Contrast" and "Daringly Distinct” outfits supplied by some of the Northshore’s leading boutiques—and as always—we encourage our community to continue to support local businesses. And then for some light-hearted, legal levity, have fun with our "Class Action Cocktails" to unwind after a long day. May this month bring you an abundance of strength, success, and the perseverence to conquer whatever comes your way.

O

ur September issue highlights top legal professionals in our area who work to ethically and professionally represent the best interests of their clients. From family matters to corporate concerns, law firm personnel provide assistance and guidance through everything from momentous milestones to difficult life events. In keeping with that theme, we’d like to take the opportunity to shine a light on an organization that provides a voice in court for children who have experienced abuse or neglect—Court Appointed Special Advocates. CASA trains and supervises local volunteers from all walks of life to advocate for children in need of care, benefiting the child and the community by working to help end the cycle of child abuse. CASA volunteers help the court in its determination of the best interest of children by providing a first-hand, independent perspective in the course of finding them safe and permanent homes. Children helped by CASA volunteers include those who are in the legal custody of the state (foster care). Volunteers provide judges with carefully researched background details about the child to help the court make a sound decision about that child’s future. Each case is as unique as the child involved. The CASA volunteer makes recommendations in the best interest of the child—whether it is to return to their parents, to be placed with other family members, to be freed for adoption or sometimes, to remain in foster care a while longer. The CASA volunteer attends court approximately once every six months to make recommendations and follows through on the case until it is permanently resolved. CASA for St. Tammany and Washington Parishes is administered through the Youth Service Bureau in Covington. CASA Director Sharon McLane says, “There is a continuing need for more volunteers so that we can serve an even greater number of very deserving children. We appreciate our successful, collaborative relationship with the Department of Children and Family Services as well as the support of the 22nd Judicial Court judges. The judges we serve say the CASA’s letter and testimony are critical elements in their decision process as they are the ultimate advocate for the child.” To request information about the CASA program, visit ysbworks.com or call 985-649-4092.

MICHAEL BRADLEY EARNED his Juris Doctor degree in 2006 and has practiced law

for almost 15 years. He began his career as a public defender, maintaining the highest pleato-dismissal ratio in the State of Louisiana. Bradley says his favorite aspect of practicing law is helping people. “Although frustrating at times, it is very rewarding. YEP. I’M ONE of “those” attorneys. I get that response sometimes from people when I tell them what it is I do for a living. I always reply with a question, “Have you ever been in an auto accident?” The answer is always a resounding, “no.” People’s worldviews are limited, in main part, by their experiences. If a person hasn’t been through the deeply traumatic experience of being involved in a serious auto accident with serious injuries, they just don’t understand why we truly need “those” attorneys. They don’t understand what it’s like to miss work, or lose your job and not be able to provide for your family, nor do they understand what it’s like to live in intense pain day in and day out. They can't comprehend what it’s like to be unable to feel happiness and contentment in your life, because all you can worry about is the next huge hospital bill that’s coming in. And they especially don’t understand what it’s like to do all of this without a knowledgeable, aggressive personal injury attorney. I could write a book describing the truly insidious tricks and tactics car insurance companies employ to protect their money. That is their one, true goal. I know this because I used to be an insurance claims adjuster. Also, I know what it’s like to be defrauded and duped by these companies after suffering through a really serious auto accident in college. It happened to me and it changed my life. I didn’t think I needed an attorney. And now, I don’t want it to happen to you. So, yes–I am one of “those” attorneys and very proudly so. 8

I HAVE BEEN practicing primarily family law in St. Tammany Parish and

Washington Parish for more than 24 years and have been a sole practitioner for most of my legal career. My firm handles litigation in cases of divorce, child custody, child support, spousal support, community property division, protective orders, disavowal claims, intrafamily adoption and other family law issues. Though the majority of my time is focused on litigation, I also offer mediation services, and I hope to see continued growth in the number of mediation cases handled by my firm. For the past eight years, I have also enjoyed teaching the eight-week, high conflict, co-parenting course that many parents in litigation are court-ordered to attend. Notary services are also available by appointment.

Does Your Estate Plan Include Digital Assets? WRITTEN BY CHRISTIE TOURNET

WITH THE FREQUENCY

that we use the

internet, we continually create, store, and manage digital assets. But, we sometimes forget we are the only persons with access to those assets. So, failing to include digital assets in your estate plan, or authorizing the ability to access those assets could cause problems such as financial or sentimental loss for family members and beneficiaries. Common examples of digital assets include your email and social media accounts; digital collections with music, pictures and videos; business accounts; and online databases. But digital assets can also include other internet accounts and contractual rights. For example, an asset associated with an online account might also be aligned with an online reward program, such as frequent flyer accounts and miles, or credit card points. Still, we caution that airline companies' respective contracts outline if those assets are inheritable or not. And, other companies’ rules may be buried in a user agreement. Thus, without legal access to such digital accounts, your fiduciary may not be aware of certain outstanding accounts, online contracts, or rewards. We recommend that when you consider estate planning, you incorporate these types of assets when you are considering your other, commonly listed assets during the planning process. Then, you can discuss with your counselor on how to include instructions within Your Last Will, Trust, or Powers of

ELLEN CREEL EXUDES

both strong

confidence and warmth. As she works in her downtown Covington office amongst her diplomas — and also stunning original artwork gifted from an attorney friend — her surroundings reflect this dual nature. After revealing her rank as oldest of five siblings, those hallmark personality traits ring true as she tells her story. Typically conscientious achievers, firstborns excel at their pursuits, and Creel delivers as a natural leader.

Natural Born Leader

cover story

WRITTEN BY JAN WINDHORST PHOTOS BY STEVE RANDON

BORN IN JACKSON, MS, Creel describes a childhood lacking in wealth but not spirit. “Our parents instilled in us two things – maintaining a strong faith and the necessity of college education. Mom’s question wasn’t if we were going, but where. Excelling was our way out.” And excel she did. Creel earned a National Merit Scholarship to Mississippi College and majored in History/Pre-Law. But developing her innate strengths didn’t lie solely in books. Serving as Vice-President of the student body and on the student disciplinary committee were outgrowths of her magnetic personality and desire to see people treated fairly, and an early manifestation of her future life’s mission. “The first case I ever won came before even entering law school,” Creel proudly recalls. “At a student hearing, I argued for three boys facing expulsion for possessing their dorm’s skeleton key. They had done no harm, no theft or mischief – simply opened a room they used as a gym. Based on my argument, they were allowed to stay in school. I know standing up for them changed their lives for the better.” Creel swayed the vote against the disciplinary committee head who, she later learned from a mentor, was the Dean of Mississippi College Law School. “It was clear to others and to me that this is what I’m meant to do – assure people are afforded fair and responsible treatment under the law. As a high schooler, I watched my mother suffer illegal and unethical treatment in a legal matter. To see someone in power take advantage of an innocent teacher absolutely defined my life’s course. Every day I have her in my heart as I hold myself to the highest standards of professionalism and ethics when I represent clients who are someone’s mother, father or child.” Creel pursued her dreams vigorously with accomplishments including attending LSU Law School on the Richard Westbrook and the John Gordon Scholarships; earning the highest grade in Constitutional Law; and passing the Louisiana and Mississippi Bar exams on the first try. Alongside her academic achievements, Creel continued to successfully balance education with all-important life experiences. “A third of law students don’t survive the first year and many marriages don’t survive law school either. I say ‘we’ graduated because my husband was so supportive and helped me succeed during that demanding time.” Ellen met Brandon Creel in college where he was a Division II National Champion football player, married after graduation and has lived and practiced in the 22nd Judicial District throughout her career having never been sanctioned or disciplined by any court or the Bar Association. She maintains a broad practice encompassing family law, property work, successions, and corporate law; has represented government bodies including serving as Franklinton City Prosecutor for 11 years; and has represented both plaintiffs and defendants in civil suits. The Creels imparted their strong work ethic to three sons: Hampton, a college senior; Harrison, a college junior; and Hayes, a junior at St. Paul’s. “The boys learned from our example. I cleaned houses to put myself through college. Brandon had a dairy farm on the side where he instilled in the boys pleasure and pride in hard, physical work. We taught them all work is honorable when the job is well done. That earns self-respect and the trust of others.” With her upbeat stories and humor amidst serious conversation, it‘s easy to see that Creel possesses empathy, tempering her firstborn traits with middle child characteristics like peace-keeping, negotiation, and ability to relate to people different than themselves. She embraces social responsibility by involvement in projects such as Safe Harbor, which assists victims of dangerous or violent domestic situations, and the Washington Parish Activity Center, which provides vocational and social resources to adults with developmental challenges. "Our family has worked with the Activity Center for decades. It’s near and dear to me. I’ve also served on our sons’ school board where I learned just how much it takes to run a school.” Her colleague, Jessica Karr, speaks to Creel’s sense of fairness and compromise. “Although Ellen’s impeccable reputation preceded her, we were bitterly opposed over a case when we met. She initiated a sit-down with me and after hours of discussion, we found common ground bringing the case to a satisfactory conclusion for each client. She won me over earning my respect and friendship.” Karr’s respect is so great that she, among others, encouraged Creel to run for the Division J Judge’s seat and even signed on as her campaign manager. Creel reflects, “I was humbled by those who thought I was worthy of the excellent standards set by previous 22nd JDC judges. My breadth of practice has prepared me for this general jurisdiction seat. I’ve seen enough cases to understand how important this job is. I know unquestionably I have the ability to listen and be fair no matter who is before me or how difficult the facts. It’s more than ethics, it’s about carefully and responsibly affecting people’s lives.” Ellen Creel is a candidate for Judge, Division J, in the 22nd Judicial District Court. married the love of my life, Lane Thomas. We have two children, Tristin and Angel Thomas. My family and I believe that everything we have is given to us by the Lord, and I wanted to make sure that when I opened my doors, my customers would know that we are a Christian family. We have been blessed beyond measure. I’ve always loved bridal and the pageant world. I was a pageant girl growing up, and it’s my mission to inspire women to be themselves and feel beautiful. When a bride comes through my doors, I want to make her feel like she is a princess and know that her big day is my top priority. We make appointments for our brides in order to get the best one-on-one experience with us. To help our brides feel even more special, we offer them complimentary mimosas and petit fours. YOU KNOW YOU’RE

in Louisiana when you

can only get to your house by boat! “Off Da Grid” is Rebekah and Lee Parrish’s rustic refuge on the bayou offering them the peace and calmness of nature with all the conveniences of home. The seeds of an idea for the personal safe harbor of the couple who met in the Louisiana Army National Guard in 2012 came with the purchase of land on Bedico Creek in Ponchatoula shortly after Hurricane Katrina. Those plans blossomed when Rebekah, a 20-year army construction engineer created the architectural and interior design. “Our inspiration was the beauty of the Louisiana landscape with the black, gray and brown color palette reflecting the hues of the swamp." The cypress for the walls and accessories came from Acadian Cypress and Hardwoods in Ponchatoula; Louisiana Poplar is used for the butcher block counters and island top with cabinets and shelves in pine; the tin, which they cleaned and preserved, was reclaimed from a nearby chicken coop that was being torn down; and the rope accents lend to the nautical theme. Durable, luxury vinyl tile flooring with a darker woodgrain finish stands up to heavy foot traffic while beautifully contrasting the lighter cypress and tin. An eight-foot cypress sign, donning the getaway’s playful name and fashioned by a friend and fellow veteran, began welcoming the Parrish family and their guests upon completion of the home in 2018. That year also saw the expansion of the family to include a new baby brother to Lee’s daughter Abbie. Says Rebekah, “The whole concept is completely custom designed with a whole lot of love and care to create our idea of a little slice of heaven. We wanted a place away from it all but still connected. So along with great cell reception, it is fully equipped with wi-fi, a Flir security system with five cameras and a remotely controlled central air and heat system.” Rebekah says that a lot of logistical coordination also went into the construction of the creekside family haven which is reached by a 10 to 15-minute boat ride depending on embarking from Lee’s Landing or Bedico Creek Landing. The 1100 square feet of living area is surrounded by extensive decking and outdoor space including a wrap-around top deck extending 10 feet out along the back and 30 feet out along the front, of which 10 feet is covered on all sides. Oversized windows allow in plenty of natural light and stunning views of the lush Louisiana landscape they Sophisticated Woman | September 2020 27

We have campfires and s’mores up on the deck which serves the dual purpose of usable area and also protection for the boats and items housed underneath.” Two slips, one 14 feet and one 10 feet can comfortably fit a pontoon boat with room for a variety of other boats and recreational equipment. “The boats are always ready to take the kids out fishing, frogging, kayaking, or paddle boating. If the weather is good, we ride to Lake Pontchartrain or explore offshoot waterways for alligators and beautiful birds. If not, we’ll putt along and visit friends down the river.” The home sleeps 11 in two downstairs bedrooms and an upstairs loft, not including common area options such as comfy sofas. The one bathroom is designed for maximum usage with army-inspired efficiency. Shower and toilet/sink are in separate quarters so both can be utilized at the same time. The kitchen boasts a farmhouse sink, side-byside refrigerator, island, and a hooded electric range with glass cooktop. The cabinetry is an open design so if friends or family are staying while the

Parrish family is away, they can conveniently see where pots, pans, dishware and utensils reside. While the home lives up to the state’s motto of Sportsman’s Paradise and all of the family’s dreams, an unfortunate situation has led them to sacrifice it for the sake of their young son. Mason suffers from a one-in-a-million condition called hypohydrotic ectodermal dysplasia which means he cannot regulate his body temperature or sweat. Temperatures over 72 degrees are uncomfortable for him and heat stroke or death can occur with increasing heat. Rebekah and Lee have put their house on the market with plans to move North. Says Mason's mother, “We’re going to escape the heat and humidity here and move to a climate that allows him to run around and be a little boy. We love river life—it’s indescribable—the scenery, the wildlife, the water activities and the camaraderie with neighbors. And it’s such a unique property. It comes turnkey with the kayak and paddle boat, all the furniture, tools, generator, pots and pans, dishes, sheets – everything. You can just pull up in your boat with groceries and everything else is waiting for you. We know someone special will get it and love it just as much as we do.” Sophisticated Woman | September 2020 29

Clean-Up Tips: Getting Ready For Fall WRITTEN BY SNOANN WILLETT, LOUISIANA MASTER GARDENER

THINK THE WEATHER outside is too hot for gardening? Think again! Hopefully by now kids have returned to school as have you to the garden. Consider this clean-up checklist: 1. Hurricane season is still a concern. Stow any lawn ornaments that may float away, blow over or become air-borne. 2. Lawn fertilizing is finally over for the season. Continue watering any sod that has replaced dead areas. 3. Maintain frequent waterings of warm season annuals, especially those in containers and raised beds. Migrating hummingbirds and other pollinators depend on healthy blooms for refueling. 4. Cool-season annuals are in stock and very tempting, but wait another month before planting. Finalize seed, bulb and rose orders. 5. Continue watering roses and complete pruning missed in late August by early September for fall blooms. 6. Finish repotting houseplants that have summered outside. Before returning them indoors, allow for new growth and adjustment to different light levels. 7. Harvest, rinse, dry and chop herbs for freezing. Remove woody stems that may make dishes bitter. Label bags since herbs may appear similar. Cilantro mistaken for parsley makes for a sad spaghetti. 8. Divide and transplant Louisiana irises. Rework beds by adding organic material and an all-purpose fertilizer. 9. Pest patrol is an ongoing chore. Remain vigilant. 10. Prune storm-damaged branches immediately. Wait a month before transplanting or planting trees and shrubs. September’s climate in our area can be too intense for heavy gardening but there is much that can be accomplished in anticipation of glorious, highly-anticipated drier and cooler conditions that surely await us for Fall. Happy Growing!

BBL: Cosmetic Enhancement Procedure WRITTEN BY MICHELE COOPER, MD

HAVE YOU HEARD the term BBL and wondered what it means? Brazilian Buttock Lift is a cosmetic enhancement to create a fuller, rounder, more projected bottom by injecting fat into the buttocks. The procedure was popularized in South and Central America where a curvy body shape has long been a desirable trait. Curve envy caught on in the US with the rising popularity of Kim Kardashian in 2007. This procedure is ideal for those with fat in other areas that they would like removed. Liposuction allows for the sterile collection of fat which is reinjected into the butt. This technology is not new, just its popularity. Dr. Sydney Coleman popularized fat injection for facial rejuvenation in the late 90s and in 2001, he published the first medical book describing the sterile collection techniques and sequence for preparing the fat and injection protocols. In 2004, I edited a paper on large volume fat injections to the buttocks written by a plastic surgeon from Columbia, Dr. William Murillo, and had the opportunity to operate with him and learn his technique. There have been many advances and changes to the procedure since then. Most significantly, by instituting that the fat only be injected into the plane superficial to the muscle, a location where fat is usually found on the buttocks, and not into the muscle, which was considerably more dangerous for the patient. As our techniques have improved, so have the results. The change in body shape can be truly amazing! If you’ve considered liposuction, any fat removed must be reinjected at the time of surgery rather than saved for later. So, if you’d like a shapely bottom, more cleavage or even facial rejuvenation and have a little fat to spare in another area—it’s a great time to discuss these services with a boardcertified plastic surgeon.

75th anniversary of our Tangipahoa Parish Library. Established as a “demonstration project” by the State Library near the end of WWII, Tangipahoa Parish opened five small book depositories in the summer of 1944. In April 1945, parish residents were so pleased with the project, they voted in a modest 1.75 mill tax to support a local library and Miss Elizabeth Cammack was named the first director of the new Tangipahoa Parish Library System. Throughout the years, our libraries have modernized to meet the needs of a growing and changing population. From bookmobiles to a local history archive, genealogy station to computer terminals, and 24/7 access to free downloads, the library has evolved to meet increasing needs. Younger residents also find the library special. Over the last 75 years, children have met award-winning authors, watched theatrical performances, and enjoyed the written word come to life, thanks to many dedicated librarians. Today’s TPL System not only houses printed materials but also hosts a wide-ranging selection of digital and broadcast media available for public use. Because our citizens continue to support the system with a modest millage, every Tangipahoa resident is entitled to a free library card and all the services associated with it. The Tangipahoa Parish Library is one of our many local treasures. We’re proud to join the TPL System in celebrating this incredible milestone
