role model excelling in a male-dominated profession. The story tells of her commitment to excellence and her success while balancing family and career. Her journey is also intertwined with this month’s Mentionable, Justin Greenleaf. Although they are different in many ways, their business partnership centers around a shared vision of teamwork and focus on the future. October also brings us into the pink as we recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month and highlight all things related to women’s health and well-being. I invite you to read about women physicians focusing on women’s issues with new treatment models,

support groups and a dedication to addressing sexual health issues that in the past were overlooked or considered taboo to even discuss. We also highlight ways women can practice self-care through exercise, aesthetics and the wonderfully unique, local cancer support group, YouNight. On a personal note, I'd like to acknowledge the greatest inspiration I’ve ever had the honor of knowing and working with—Joanne Gallinghouse. This month marks one year since I was faced with continuing her legacy without her, and I could not have made it this far without the memory of her wisdom and spirit. I urge you to take a moment to appreciate the strong female figures in your life and continue to use their examples for motivation and inspiration.

any women often spend so much time helping others that they don't take time for themselves. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and in this issue Sophisticated Woman is focusing on women's health and wellness—and the importance of taking time for yourself. From physicians and fitness to skincare and integrated medicine, learn more about the best that the Northshore has to offer. Schedule your annual checkups. Enjoy a facial. Get a massage. Start a new exercise routine. But most of all, take care of yourself—and don't forget to treat yourself. You deserve it!

Focus On The Feminine

Katherine Williams, MD DR. KATHERINE WILLIAMS is passionate about the

development and health of women in all stages of life. “My mother taught anatomy and instilled in me a love for science and the need for women to contribute more to the field, particularly medicine.” In that spirit, Williams started a scholarship for STEM careers at Saint Scholastica Academy in hopes of inspiring young women to embrace science as a meaningful career. She also partnered with her mother, Dr. Patricia Williams, to fund the SSA science lab and contribute to the development of their science program. Along with practicing medicine, Williams is also an entrepreneur with women’s health and well-being at the heart of her two clinics. She was drawn to OB/GYN residency at Charity Hospital in New Orleans. “It offered a variety of avenues to address women’s issues, and with my degree in psychology, I could offer additional help to women going through life transitions such as childbirth and menopause.“ Her Center for Women’s Health clinic in Covington provides a warm and comfortable environment and has grown to include two nurse practitioners and two additional physicians. One of Williams’ specialties is complicated robotic surgery, having performed over 3000 procedures such as hysterectomy and complex endometriosis surgery. After earning a fellowship through the International Society for the Study of Women’s Sexual Health, Williams opened the Southern Institute for Women’s Sexual Health to address an unmet need for many cancer survivors. As the clinic expanded, many other women suffering with conditions that profoundly affected their quality of life and intimacy, such as vulvovaginal disorders, pelvic floor dysfunction and menopause, have been helped by her expertise. “It’s rewarding to help women who thought there were no resources or hope to overcome their pelvic pain.” Williams says SIWSH is different because it provides the opportunity for longer appointments where patients can discuss problems and concerns. “They fill out an extensive questionnaire and after talking and an exam, we adopt a comprehensive approach to achieve full wellness. It’s important that a trained specialist safely guide women through this process that can otherwise be filled with misinformation.” Williams also endeavors to promote patient advocacy as well as community resources for women. “As Presidentelect of the Louisiana State Medical Society, I look forward to bringing about change that will ensure access to quality healthcare for all.” Furthering her cause, Williams is on the advisory board and a presenting sponsor for You Night Events, an empowerment program for cancer survivors, and she is a community partner for the Children’s Advocacy Center Hope House in Covington.

The Science of Beauty MELISSA MITRIK HAS brought cutting-edge technology and superior standards of European med spas home to the Northshore with the creation of Bleu Beauty Company. A truly organic and full-luxury med spa, Bleu Beauty separates itself from others by offering only products that adhere to strict European standards. Explains Melissa, “After living in Italy for four years and working in the med spa arena, I love exceeding the standard in the industry. European regulation is extremely rigorous, and we exceed even their criteria by offering biodynamic skincare which is higher-grade than organic to ensure natural and immediate results.” On her yearly treks overseas, Melissa researches new trends for her clients. She is most excited about Fibroblast non-surgical skin tightening. “Fibroblast is new in North America but has proven extremely successful and popular across Europe over the last several years. We’re the only business offering these services on the Northshore and one of only four in the state, so clients in the know across the USA seek us out and come from all over.” Melissa explains that Fibroblast Skin Tightening is “soft surgery” meaning it delivers results similar to surgery but with minimal downtime and no scalpel, stitches or bandages. “The results are immediate and permanent. It can take the place of Botox and fillers. There is no anesthesia, and compared to actual surgery, it’s much lower-risk and more affordable—which our clients love.” The procedure eliminates excess skin using a hand-held device that creates a tiny arc. When the arc touches the skin, it causes sublimation, eliminating excess skin and leaving the surrounding area untouched. A tiny carbon dot is left behind which sheds in about four to seven days. As healing activates collagen production, skin becomes firm and tight. More than one treatment can be done for better results, but Melissa says it’s uncommon to require more than one to two treatments in the same area. Along with treating the face, Bleu Beauty’s five certified and licensed practitioners can perform breast lifts and tummy makeovers and even tighten knees and biceps. Although any body area can be treated, Melissa says that treating the face is most popular. “The thinnest skin is around the eyes, so treating those areas gives the most impactful results. Under the eye usually requires only one treatment and can help someone look 10 to 15 years younger. People see the results and often cry because they love it so much. There are some contraindications, and we’re candid about that on our website. We want our clients to be educated and have the best possible experience at a great value.” Bleu Beauty has two locations serving the New Orleans area and the Northshore. They are located at 135 Terra Bella Boulevard, Suite B in Covington and 3769 Pontchartrain Drive, Suite 5 in Slidell. For more information or to book an appointment, visit bleubeautyco.com.

Getting the Balance Right PILATES WAS FIRST developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century as a system of exercise which was intended to stengthen the human mind and body. Dancers then used it to strengthen their bodies and heal aches and pains. Today, Pilates is focused on toning the body and improving posture and movement. A consistent Pilates practice is touted to benefit a wide range of people, from experienced athletes to those simply looking for a new fitness routine by creating a strong foundation of balance, strength, mobility and flexibility. The full-body, low-impact workouts offered at Club Pilates in Mandeville provide a high-level challenge to the stabilizing muscles of the core. Unlike mat Pilates, classes at Club Pilates use specialized equipment, including the Reformer, EXO-Chair, Bosu Ball, TRX Suspension Trainer, springboards and more. This combination of equipment provides comprehensive motion training and maximizes the effectiveness of the exercise session. General Manager Cassie Lachin explains, “For example, the Reformer elevates you off the floor to help achieve a wider range of motion. It guides you through exercises while helping hold your body in the correct position to engage target areas including small muscle groups which are often ignored. The springboard has hand and foot loops that help keep your core engaged while doing exercises like squats, bicep curls and chest expansions.” While the studio is part of a nationwide franchise, the Mandeville location is locally owned. Lachin says members enjoy the best of both worlds. “The Club Pilates system offers six signature class formats and four unique levels of classes to meet members’ needs. They also provide hundreds of hours of instructor training teaching anatomy, exercise routines and modifications.” Instructors guide new members through the club’s offerings and then assess and recommend the appropriate level and mix of classes for their particular needs. “Our small class size of 12 creates a safe environment for addressing everyone’s needs from sedentary to active and beginner to experienced. While taking into account weight, age, body type and health issues such as diabetes or scoliosis, instructors offer movement modifications to maximize the workout for all and protect from injury or aggravating any existing physical issues.” Each month, Club Pilates offers programs and events such as Pilates and Pups where the Northshore Humane Society brings dogs available for adoption to the studio. For October, during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, they are offering a workshop to teach women going through breast cancer ways to promote mobility throughout affected areas. Says Lachin, “Events like this give us the opportunity to add value for our members and benefit the community at the same time.” Club Pilates is located at 2077 N. Causeway Boulevard, Suite 1 in Mandeville. For more information, call 985-807-1186, email Mandeville@ clubpilates.com or visit clubpilates.com. Sophisticated Woman | October 2019

A Wellness Experience Exclusively For Women DR. DEVAN SZCZEPANSKI is changing the face of healthcare for women on the Northshore! "The future of women’s healthcare is not necessarily written on a script pad. My goal is to help women age dynamically, effectively and beautifully,” says Dr. Szczepanski. Feeling the need to provide more for women in the community, she created Sophrosyne: A Wellness Experience Exclusively for Women. The definition of sophrosyne is ‘a healthy state of mind and a deep awareness of one’s true self resulting in true happiness.' After receiving her undergraduate, graduate and medical degrees from LSU, Dr. Szczepanski obtained Board Certification in Family Medicine. She then pursued post-graduate training in Nutritional Medicine. Her dream of a private practice was realized in 2016 with the opening of DS Family Medicine, and she has been voted "The Northshore’s Best Family Medicine Physician" for each consecutive year. “I am very passionate about the need for the people of South Louisiana to have a doctor who can relate to them and really listen to their healthcare concerns. I feel that private practice allows me to treat my patients the ‘old school way’ where I spend the full time they need with me and determine individualized treatment options for them to consider.” Being well-versed in both pharmaceuticals and nutraceuticals, Dr. Szczepanski uses customized diagnostic testing to formulate comprehensive lifestyle medicine. “When women understand the underlying cause of their symptoms, they can become motivated to create a life balance that is often not found in a pill bottle.” The Sophrosyne “experience” begins with a series of testing that provides foundational

Devan Szczepanski, MD

individualized health information. The initial assessment includes analyzing hormone levels, GI Testing, BMI scanning, ultrasounds, brain mapping and a nutrigenomic evaluation —nutritional-based genetics revealing how the individual breaks down and stores nutrients, as well as how the body responds to both physical and psychological stress

at the cellular level. Additional services will feature quarterly events with renowned women speakers, nutritional seminars, cooking classes and life coaching, just to name a few. VIP Concierge Health and Medicine is provided to Sophrosyne members through the So Lux Wellness component. So Lux Wellness patients receive a two-hour initial wellness visit and one-on-one support through a dedicated team that creates an individualized wellness plan. Team members include Emily Ruffino, Sunni Hayes, and Brandi Shoemake. Hayes, who is a Registered Nurse and Sophrosyne’s Concierge Director says, “There’s nothing like it around here. We perform a total patient health profile and provide a combination of treatment options to include pharmaceuticals, complementary supplements, herbals and nutraceuticals for each patient." So Lux Wellness patients have the benefit of meeting with a nutritionist and personal trainer as well as 24-hour access to Dr. Szczepanski with same day, in-home appointments for both acute and chronic health needs. Hayes adds, “Sophrosyne offers the opportunity to invest in your life through your lifestyle.” A fundamental difference in Dr. Szczepanski’s new program is patient involvement, which she believes is the key to success. “When a patient understands and feels in control of their care, they are more likely to become invested and see better results,” she explains. “We integrate an alternative approach to modern medicine and wellness choices that are based on their specific test results and genetics. Logic tells us that the old cookie-cutter, one-size-fits-all approach is outdated, and patients really engage when they know their treatment plan is customized for them all the way down to the genetic level.” Betterment of women's healthcare is Dr. Szczepanski’s mission. To pay it forward, affecting women for many years to come, she is committed to giving 10 percent of all Sophrosyne proceeds to the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women’s Northshore Division. Join us for Sophrosyne’s kick off on Wednesday, October 16th at Tchefuncta Country Club, 6:30 p.m. For more information call 985-273-1400. Reservations are required. The BRCA Gene. Are You At Risk? WRITTEN BY DEVIN WALSH

FOR AS LONG as I can remember, October has been covered in pink to raise awareness regarding breast cancer. As a community, our awareness does seem to be increasing. All month

long we raise money for foundations by walking, running, wearing pink and celebrating the bravery of those going through the disease and also life as a survivor. But does being aware that breast cancer is an important issue that affects many women mean we are informed enough? Do we know the answers to the many questions we will have should we become personally affected? For me, until a few months ago, that was my truth. I am a 31-year-old single mother. I am active, eat healthy, am a non-smoker and stay away from harsh chemicals. How could I possibly be at risk for something so terrible? Those thoughts rushed through my mind when my doctor told me I am a carrier of the same BRCA gene that 12 women in my family also carry. I found out about the BRCA gene when my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer last year. I felt so many different emotions on that day and the news affects me still. Depression crept in. Suddenly, everything I thought I knew, I questioned. Was I going to let this horrible disease define me as a woman, or was I going to be proactive and let my reaction determine my future? I have a 12-year-old son who watches everything I do, and I must be strong and healthy for him. Knowing I have the gene, I immediately began researching ways to be proactive. It was a high risk that the cancer would develop unless the tissue was removed. Knowing that, my choice was simple. The decision to have a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery was the only option for me. After making that decision, I felt invigorated. I have learned an incredible lesson throughout this experience and hope I can help others become more informed while inspiring the courage to apply that information in a way that is best for them. We should not allow a situation to define who we are, but we can become stronger because of it.

MICHELLE LAWSON

Mastering Growth By Design WRITTEN BY JAN WINDHORST PHOTOS BY STEVE RANDON

YIN/YANG REPRESENTS A

belief that

W O M A N

everything in the universe consists of two forces that are opposite but complementary. That theme is reflected in Michelle Lawson’s story of creating a career that intertwines artistry with technicality, and also in her relationship with Justin Greenleaf, her business partner in their architectural design firm. Lawson describes a childhood filled with structure, routine and fun. She pauses, surprised at her emotions upon recounting her parents’ influence. “They both worked full time. He was an engineer and coached all of my sports. She was a nurse

E N T E R P R I S I N G

and checked my homework nightly. I have always wanted to be a working professional and to manage parenthood as well as they did. While most girls played with doll houses and Barbie Corvettes, I was master planning roads, subdivisions and converting play kitchens into grocery stores,” she laughs. While a senior at Dominican, her insightful father arranged a meeting with a prominent, female architect in New Orleans. “I was hooked. I knew architecture school would be far from easy, but I took the challenge.” While at LSU, Lawson learned how human behavior is affected by one’s surroundings. “Good design affects how people move through a space without directional signage. It maximizes comfort and efficiency, making a great difference in work and life.” She also joined forces with Greenleaf at LSU, and despite their differences, they appreciated each other’s strengths. Both valued excellence and studied together. In a rigorous, five-year curriculum that started with 100 students and ended with only 31, Lawson met the challenge, mastered it and finished valedictorian of her 2009 graduating class. “One definition of architect is ‘leader’ and that’s me. My type-A personality served me in school as it does here, managing many moving targets, but it’s tempered with my dad’s lessons of the importance of teamwork.” After graduation and her first jobs, Lawson married her high school sweetheart, Kyle. “We moved to the Northshore to give our children, Blaine and Brooke, the kind of childhood we had. Kyle and I juggle demanding careers and the responsibilities of parenthood as a team. I’m happy to say both can coexist, but in order to achieve

cover story

success as an architect and a mother, I needed to work in an uplifting environment with exciting design opportunities and processes aligning with my personality.” At just 28, Greenleaf had a vision of creating a different type of firm that embraced a team of talented people, and he asked Lawson to build it with him. Lawson conveys the intensity and challenges of five years of growth. “We are opposite in many ways but completely agree on creating a stable, fulfilling and enjoyable work environment. We thought it would take years, but I quickly learned that our ideas were well received by others in the industry, clients and prospective employees. We had our company in one month. Since then, we’ve significantly grown our team, designed millions of dollars in construction, expanded our offices three times and started families. We both have two kids. His second child and my first were born seven weeks apart. If we can survive that, we can survive anything.” Along with being opposite and complementary, yin/yang further asserts that those forces constantly spin together. As that circulation continues, the forces propel and gradually give way to each other. Lawson describes her working relationship with Greenleaf similarly. “I love what I do, but Justin takes me out of my comfort zone. I gravitate towards consistency and routine, but I’ve learned that the only constant is change. Just when I feel that we are in a rhythm, there is a new idea, and it’s up to me as COO to execute. While he’s looking forward, I’m working on process management and business efficiencies. Change is challenging, but it’s how we stay cutting-edge and provide a great work environment.” One company mission is to provide stability to their all-important team in an industry affected by external factors. “We’ve expanded services to include interior design, graphic design, and project marketing — which incorporates web design and video—to more fully serve our clients.” The firm’s designs also incorporate the inevitability of change. “We planned our Covington office to anticipate growth. The furniture is modular, the walls are movable and many of the areas are multi-use spaces like the work lounge, where ‘work’ is redefined.” The office serves as a showcase of possibilities for clients. “We ask a lot of questions to ascertain clients’ present and future needs and use technology to present our designs very clearly. When clients come here, they can see our designs in action.” As ancient wisdom tells, opposing forces attract and combine to bring about change. Although change can, at times, be uncomfortable for Michelle Lawson, it provides opportunities for growth that she is ready to take on—growth of her business, growth for her clients, growth of her family and most importantly, personal growth. “We have a responsibility to ourselves and our community to master plan as best we can, to anticipate future needs and be flexible enough to adjust when things inevitably change.” Michelle Lawson is co-owner, COO and a principal architect at Greenleaf Lawson Architects, APAC. Justin Greenleaf

Building A Team. Fulfilling A Vision. WRITTEN BY JAN WINDHORST PHOTOS BY STEVE RANDON

JUSTIN GREENLEAF HAS

always had an eye for design. “It might sound cliché, but like most who

pursue architecture, that goal stemmed from my talent in drawing, sketching, modeling, and working with my hands. I would spend hours and hours as a child working on Lego projects and turning them into finished models. My dad always taught me to do things correctly and never cut corners, so I would keep working until every last Lego piece was in its correct place.” Regarding his mother Greenleaf adds, “She taught me to pave my own road and do whatever it takes to get the job done. I’m proud to say that through their words and examples, both have guided me to the point at which I am today.” Greenleaf’s solo venture in architecture began in 2015 and after only one month, he called on former college classmate, Michelle Lawson, knowing she would be the perfect business partner. “I met Michelle on my first day at LSU and knew she was serious about success. We studied together throughout the five-year curriculum of LSU Architecture School and on the long road to licensure. Many graduates don’t complete licensure. They pursue other aspects of the profession. We shared a common goal then and continue to achieve great things together now.” As the business has grown, their partnership has only strengthened. Each brings dedication and drive to the table along with different but complementary strengths that are the cornerstone of the business. Growth and notable success came quickly to the team resulting in the company that stands today, Greenleaf Lawson Architects. “Several factors motivated me to take on this challenge,” says the driven founder, “And I am thankful every day that I did. We proudly design, manage and see concepts through completion. It’s gratifying to see businesses thrive once they occupy the spaces we design. Most importantly, we enjoy doing it. We’ve built a team of creative, energetic professionals that value the same principles Michelle and I do. A fulfilling and productive office culture is paramount to us and repeatedly winning the honor of ‘Best Places to Work’ have been some of my proudest moments.” Greenleaf continues to push the envelope by expanding services and using his creativity to not only design for clients but to also constantly propel his team. “My ideas are often jokingly referred to as crazy, but with Michelle and the team’s talent for executing them, we continue delivering services ahead of the curve.” Greenleaf says they have grown the company based on hard work and morals and is inspired to build a workplace that motivates his top-notch associates. A Northshore native, Greenleaf returned to Mandeville with his wife, Kaitlyn, after college. Daily he focuses on the development of St. Tammany knowing his two children, Madison and Jackson, will be able to enjoy the small-town feel that the Northshore provides. “It has a little of everything – close to the city, close to hunting and fishing, a close-knit community, and it’s a great place to raise my children. Although I grew up on the Northshore when it was far less developed, I am still pro-development. It just has to be done the right way. I have an obligation to design thoughtfully for smart growth in the future.” Greenleaf also values community involvement with organizations such as Leadership St. Tammany, from which he graduated in 2017 and where he now serves on the Leadership Board of Trustees. He was an honoree at Northshore’s Finest 2017 Cystic Fibrosis Foundation event, currently holds the AIA New Orleans Board Louisiana State Delegate position and is also honored to serve as co-chair of this year’s Northshore Heartwalk promoting the American Heart Association’s mission of improved cardiovascular health for all. Because Greenleaf is the youthful engine of progress and company visionary, it was shockingly ironic that he received the rare cancer diagnosis of ocular melanoma at just 30 years old. Although for the past three years he has battled cancer, he strives not to let it interfere with his family or business. “I couldn’t have gotten through the past few years without my family, friends and office team. Kaitlyn and I just celebrated our 10th wedding anniversary, and she is by my side through everything. She’s my rock, and I couldn’t have hoped for anyone better on this journey.” Greenleaf continues to successfully practice as an architect in the firm’s Downtown Covington office and optimistically looks toward the future. Although one eye’s sight was affected, he is now more observant than ever and maintains a clear vision for the company and his impact on St. Tammany Parish. “Each moment with my family is more precious than ever, and my business focus has never wavered. My perseverance has served me, my company and my family. I believe the best environment for growth is outside of your comfort zone, and that taking chances and working hard result in success. I want my kids and my team to believe this, and I strive to prove it by my example every day.” Justin Greenleaf is founder, co-owner, and a principal architect at Greenleaf Lawson Architects, APAC. Their offices are located at 404 E. Gibson Street, Suite 1 in Covington. For more information, call 985-778-2080 or visit greenleaflawson.com. Sophisticated Woman | October 2019 27

Xylitol To Prevent Tooth Decay WRITTEN BY ASTRID BRATCHER, DDS

AS WE FOCUS on women’s health this October, we shouldn’t ignore the health of our teeth. October also brings Halloween and the sugar-filled candy that goes with it, leading to the “ghouls and goblins” lurking in the oral cavity waiting to destroy our teeth! A sugar substitute called xylitol is an excellent way to combat this bacteria. What is xylitol exactly? It’s a natural sugar alcohol that helps prevent cavities. to sugar in its sweetness and can be substituted for sugar for such uses as baking and to sweeten beverages. Xylitol works by inhibiting the growth of bacteria that causes cavities. The main bacteria in the mouth, streptococcus mutans, cannot metabolize xylitol for energy, therefore bacterial numbers decrease. Fewer decay-forming bacteria on the tooth’s surface means that less plaque forms and there is less acid released in the mouth.

transmission, resulting in fewer cavities for the child. Xylitol is most often found in chewing gums and mints. We usually tell our patients to look for it as the first ingredient listed for it to be at a level that is cavity preventive. Products with xylitol such as Ice Cubes, Icebreakers Gum and products made by the company Spry are generally easy to find. As an added benefit, xylitol aids in dry mouth prevention. The recommended dosage is about four to five milligrams per day which translates to using a product about three to five times daily. Xylitol is helpful in reducing decay-causing

Pigment Correction Treatment Options WRITTEN BY KELLY GREENE , LME

AS SUMMER COMES

to an end, the need

for sun damage reversal and pigment control treatments increase in medical facilities. Products for prevention, such as sunscreen, are sold just about everywhere. However, products and treatments for correction should be administered and monitored by a licensed professional. Many people find themselves going to a medical spa for pigment issues such as hyperpigmentation, melasma and age spots. With the help of a physician and an aesthetician, most sun damage can be treated and reversed with amazing results. Prescription products such

as Hydroquinone along with retinols can help to control melanin production and correct the problem deep below the surface. Many times, the use of these products is enough to correct the pigment damage. In more severe cases, where there are many years of built up damage, non-surgical procedures are the recommended course of action.

Treatments such as chemical peels, hydradermabrasion (hydrafacial) and laser resurfacing are the recommended options for patients with pigment issues. A consultation allows your aesthetician to assess your skin to determine the treatment that best suits your skin tone. While the downtime may not be optimal for everyone, the aggressiveness of a laser procedure may be enough to fix the issues with a “one-anddone outcome. A chemical peel will typically give noticeable surface results within days of being administered. Hydrafacial is recommended as a monthly treatment to maintain results. If you are considering treatment for your pigment issues or sun damage, consult with a physician or aesthetician specializing in skincare to discuss your goals and lifestyle to acheive the desired outcome.

Understanding Special Needs Trust WRITTEN BY DOUG SUNSERI

AS YOU MAY

know, there is an increase of

children born with autism, epilepsy and other disabilities. We will probably never know the causes in our lifetime. However, we will have to deal with this reality in estate planning for our children who experience such disabilities. How do parents provide care for children upon death? From an estate planning perspective, a supplemental “special” needs trust provides the best method to maximize the financial support for a child with a disability. This type of trust allows a child to access government benefits while receiving support through a trust. Generally, if a person with a disability receives an inheritance, the government will terminate further benefits until the inherited money is expended. For example, if a person with a disability inherits $10,000 while receiving government disability benefits, that person will be disqualified from government benefits until it is demonstrated that the $10,000 is fully spent. It may take several years to re-qualify for government programs. A supplemental “special” needs trust allows the parents to pass their wealth to their child with a disability while that child maintains eligibility for government benefits. This type of trust may also be the beneficiary of an insurance policy or IRA, or the trust can open a bank account to build savings. "Special" needs trusts are highly technical and specialized. An improperly prepared trust may jeopardize or preclude eligibility for government benefits. The greatest fear of a parent of a child with a disability is how to provide financial support to their child after death. A supplemental “special” needs trust can help alleviate such concern and provide the maximum financial benefit to a minor or adult child with a disability.

Vaginal Rejuvenation "Tune-Up" WRITTEN BY KELLY GREENE , LME

WOMEN IN TODAY’S

world face many

obstacles with their reproductive system and the havoc it may stir up within their bodies due to menopause, childbirth or even cancer treatments. Millions of women suffer from vaginal dryness, irritation or urinary incontinence. Sex may be painful and uncontrollable urinary leakage might be an issue. The anxiety that goes along with these problems can be life-altering. Thankfully, technology

has

found

a

way to help women who suffer from these discomforts. CO2 laser treatments, such as the Rohrer rejuVAnate, are minimally invasive procedures that use heat to stimulate collagen and cell production. The new skin cells produced will create smoother, tighter and healthier skin in the vagina. Elasticity and lubrication may be improved— reducing painful intimacy and urinary leakage! Prior to treatments, a pelvic exam should be performed by your physician as well as a normal Pap smear (within 6 months). The laser procedure should be done by a licensed laser technician under the supervision of a medical professional. The treatment takes about 15 minutes and is virtually pain free. After treatment, patients may return to their normal daily routine. Vaginal rest is recommended for three to four days after the treatment. The best results are typically seen after three treatments perforemed four to six weeks apart, followed by a yearly maintenance treatment. Women may gain their confidence back, enjoy intimate moments and worry less about urinary incontinence in public!
