ANTHONY GREGORIO

President & CEO The Standard Companies, Inc.

For the better part of 20 years at Standard Coffee Service Company I have worked with many talented people. Our team members repeatedly have developed unique and effective coffee and tea programs, allowing us to keep a place as a leader in this industry. Yet with all our past accomplishments I remain most excited about the future. Standard Coffee Service Company is poised for growth based on new capabilities that will allow this company to delivery on a promise of excellence in all facets of

our business model. Specifically, our ability to extend and pursue strategic alliances with partners in need of brewing equipment services is now in place with Relyant Coffee Equipment Services. Relyant will function as a standalone business in the Standard portfolio, dedicated to the installation, maintenance and repair of brewed-beverage and water filtration equipment. Standard Direct is another recent addition to our service model that has great potential for success. Direct is a perfect solution for small offices, remote locations, or anywhere personal delivery service is not required. Internally, I’m observing enhancements with our telemarketing and sales process. Reaching new customers is complicated in a multimedia world. But we are keeping pace with our recent implementation of customer relationship management software. Now we’ll deliver meaningful messages to prospects throughout the sales process, making it an easy decision to do business with Standard Coffee Service Company. Indeed these are exciting times to partner with us. At Standard Coffee delivering fine coffee and tea programs will always be our focus. We only aim to get better as we look forward.

At Standard Coffee delivering fine coffee and tea programs will always be our focus.

Service is Our Standard Quality and Service Since 1919

When William B. Reily founded Standard Coffee Service Company in 1919, the decision to include the word “service” in the name was a deliberate one. At that time, service referred to the commitment of the company to provide excellent customer service. Nearly a century later, Standard Coffee is still producing top-notch customer service…and then some. The company has evolved into a one-stop shop for customers of brewed beverages, providing total brewed beverage solutions for offices, restaurants and foodservice organizations throughout the country. Today, customers are provided with quality, sought-after coffee and tea brands, along with Standguard™, a state-of-the-art water filtration system delivering premium drinking water that easily integrates into brewing systems. Our nation-wide delivery system and stream-lined ordering processes ensure that your supplies remain well-stocked. Additionally, Relyant Coffee Equipment Services—a division of the Standard Companies, Inc.—provides technicians who are experts with the installation, removal and repair of industrial

coffee machines, tea brewers and water filters. Through a centrally dispatched work order system, mechanical problems can be addressed in real-time for quick resolution. Whether you're a small business, large corporation, restaurant or foodservice group, our friendly, knowledgeable staff works in partnership with you to accommodate your brewed beverage needs. As Standard Coffee nears its century mark, we have found that the more things change, the more they stay the same. “Service” is still an integral part of our company, and our name.

Give Customers and Guests a Taste of Southern Hospitality— Offer Iced Tea

Tea is a beverage that can be enjoyed both hot and cold; but for Southerners, there is only one way to drink it—ice cold and very, very sweet. While there is no consensus on why Southern tea has become such a staple—Dolly Parton described it as “the house wine of the South” in Steel Magnolias—the origin of the brew goes back to 1879 with the publication of the first tea recipe in Housekeeping in Old Virginia by Marion Cabell. Traditionally, the beverage is made by adding sugar or syrup to hot brewed black tea before cooling. No matter the season, sweet is always served cold, usually in an ice-filled glass. While old-fashioned sweet tea remains a favorite, many tea drinkers prefer to sweeten their tea

Page 5 | www.coffeeservice.com

individually. Regardless of the way the tea is prepared, one thing is sure. Sweet tea is the epitome of Southern hospitality. Because tea is considered a healthier alternative to a carbonated beverage, the popularity of tea is increasing. The foodservice industry has an opportunity to take advantage of this trend, not only in meeting customers’ demands but also in improving their profit margins. A 16-ounce glass of iced tea delivers strong retail profit margins, outpacing other beverage categories. Standard Coffee Service Company offers Luzianne® Tea, a premium tea brand specially blended to make clear and flavorful iced tea. For resale use, Luzianne is available in traditional openbrew envelopes or convenient real-brewed concentrate. Offer a taste of Southern hospitality with iced tea. After 125 years, it still remains one hot commodity.

Drink to Your Health! Drinking coffee and tea can fit into a healthy lifestyle How much is too much? Do I have to quit when I’m pregnant? Is green tea really healthier? So many questions surround coffee and tea—beverages that most of us drink every day. Realistically, they both have benefits and risks, and like most everything else, over consumption is not recommended.

Benefits Associated with Coffee Scientists say drinking coffee long-term may help prevent chronic diseases like diabetes, cirrhosis of the liver and even cancer. Prominent antioxidants in coffee (chlorogenic acid and tocopherol) have been shown to improve insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism. Participants a 2008 study by the Harvard School of Public Health who drank six or more cups of coffee each day decreased their risk factor for Type 2 Diabetes by double digits. In late 2009, an investigation in the Archives of Internal Medicine found a 25% lower risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes in people who drink three to four cups of coffee daily. Page 6 | www.coffeeservice.com

The website TeaandCoffee.net reports that recent studies in the U.S., Japan, and Italy showed that drinking three to four cups of coffee a day is associated with an 80% reduction in risk for cirrhosis, compared with drinking none at all. In a 2009 study by the American Association for Cancer Research, men who drink at least six cups of coffee daily had a 60% lower risk of developing advanced prostate cancer than men who drink none. It seems the caffeine in coffee, while often touted as a negative, can boost your exercise performance as well. Psychologist, David Costill, PhD, the former director of the Ball State University Human Performance Laboratory and the author of several books on sports physiology, used nine competitive cyclists (two female and seven male) to study the effect of caffeine on their performances. After drinking either coffee with 330-mg of caffeine or decaffeinated coffee about an hour before the trial, they biked until they reached 80% exhaustion. Costill found that consuming caffeine one hour before exercising increased performance by as

much as 18%. Additionally, the subjects who drank caffeinated coffee burned more fat, felt less exhausted and experienced heightened alertness. According to Andrew Weil, MD, founder and program director of the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona, caffeine not only heightens alertness, it also contributes to overall cognitive function. The American Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease and Other Dementias noted that the inflammation-reducing antioxidants in caffeine may also have a protective effect against developing Alzheimer’s disease. Caffeine does have its drawbacks. Scientists caution that the caffeine in coffee can raise blood pressure, heart rate, and homocysteine levels. (Homocysteine is an amino acid in blood that is associated with stroke and heart disease.) Caffeine has been linked to benign breast lumps in women and bone loss in elderly women. For pregnant women who drink two or more cups of coffee per day, the rate of miscarriage is higher, as is the rate of low birth-weight babies. Anxiety, irritability, heartburn and sleeplessness are all by-products of too much caffeine in both men and women.

Benefits Associated with Tea While China, known as the birthplace of tea drinking, has been cultivating tea for centuries, today tea is a global favorite. Aside from water, tea is the most commonly consumed beverage in the world. Tea generally has a reputation for being much healthier than coffee, although both contain a powerful antioxidant (polyphenol) as well as caffeine. This is probably because tea contains about half as much caffeine per cup as coffee. Loaded with natural chemicals, tea leaves contain essential plant oils and antioxidants that guard our bodies against aging and contribute to heart health. Tannins and fluoride in the actual tea plant have been proven to lessen plaque buildup in the arteries. A nearly six-year long study in the Netherlands showed that people who drank at least two to three cups of black tea each day had a 70% lower risk of a heart attack than people who drank none. Green tea is most often hyped as the “healthiest” form of tea. The chemical EGCG is most potent in green tea because unlike other

forms of tea, no oxidation takes place in the processing, so all the nutrients remain in the leaves. Known for its antioxidant qualities, EGCG is also a potent anti-inflammatory, and recent studies have shown that it may play a role in tumor suppression in some cancers. The anti-inflammatory quality of EGCG also contributes to heart health by preventing arterial inflammation, a major cause of coronary artery disease. In addition, Japanese researchers have linked green tea to a reduction in LDL, or “bad” cholesterol. European research shows that tea polyphenols reduce the rate of platelet activity, which means blood is less “sticky” and may clot less. For coffee and tea lovers alike, it seems both offer significant health benefits. How much and what kind you drink depends on the state of your health and how caffeine affects your system. More and more, scientific studies suggest that coffee can be part of a healthy and balanced lifestyle. And without a doubt, tea has many more benefits than risks. Experts say you should enjoy the best quality coffee and tea that you can with the knowledge that you are probably doing more good than harm.

Filtered Water is not Just About Going Green, It’s About Saving Green You probably know someone who carries around bottled water every day but then uses tap water for coffee and tea. You may even do it yourself at home or in your office. If so, you need to stop and ask why. Is tap water healthier when it is used in brewed beverages? Or is it just more practical—from a cost and time standpoint—to run a tap rather than pour bottled water into a coffee or tea brewer? And ultimately, if tap water is fine for coffee and tea, what makes bottled water more attractive as a stand-alone? Bottled water is perceived as having a higher quality than tap water. The fancy packaging and higher costs associated with bottled water certainly reinforce this perception. But the reality is that city tap water goes through more rigorous testing than bottled water. The Federal Drug Administration (FDA) only regulates bottled water that is transported across state lines. Even then, the only requirement is that it be “as good” as tap water. While municipal tap water is tested regularly, the taste and safety of tap water may be improved substantially with water filtration systems. Standard Coffee’s Standguard water filters reduce chloramines, chlorine, lead and other toxic organic chemicals and pesticides while also eliminating objectionable tastes and odors that may be found in tap water. Standguard improves the quality of tap water, both for quick sips on the go and for brewing beverages. Moreover, the cost savings is substantial when filtered water is compared to bottled water. According to some estimates, water filtration is 1/10th the cost of bottled water. The biggest economy stems from the fact that there are no bottles involved in water filtration systems. Consumers of bottled water bear the exorbitant cost associated with the creation of plastic bottles. Each year, 17 billion barrels of oil are used to produce 30 billion plastic water bottles. While many of these bottles end up being recycled, over 2.2 billion of these end up in US landfills annually. Page 12 | www.coffeeservice.com
