SUMMER IS such a conundrum. Parents love it, yet we dread it. Schedules go out of the window and the kids are free (for the most part) to just be kids. But then reality sets in. What now? Personally, I live the conundrum every summer. My sister-in-law laughs because she knows how much I look forward to summer, but she knows she will get that phone call about 10 minutes after school ends, where I tell her, “These kids are already going at it.” She always chuckles and says, “But you loooove summer.” So here we are.

Personally, I live the conundrum every summer. I can honestly say, I did love this summer and I am sorry to see it go. Behind the Scenes with Kimmy After a hard work out, there’s nothing like a little pampering. Always-on-the-go Enterprising Woman, Kimmy Trowbridge of Re-Fuel Nutrition and Blending Station, received first-rate attention prior to her cover photo shoot. Her makeup was applied and hair styled by Audra Malnar-Brown (pictured) of Paris Parker Mandeville. The photo shoot began on location at Franco’s Athletic Club and commenced at Re-Fuel where participants were all treated to none other than—you guessed it—a delicious smoothie! Thanks to Kimmy, Audra and Steve!

VISION

Cataracts, Light and Insomnia

ONCE WE DEVELOP cataracts, the light that reached the retina, in the back of the eye, decreases. Vision then diminishes. At first additional light or magnification may be needed to read clearly or to enlarge smaller letters. Progressively, patients notice that glare develops at night which makes it difficult to read signs. Later, even glasses will not be able to overcome the opacity and density of are the often aske Dermatologists cataract. Surgical removal with an intraocular “What the best sunscreen? lens can restore your vision tois normal. There are many intraocular lenses placed into the eye to restore clear vision. Some lenses allow the simultaneous correction of nearsightedness or farsightedness with astigmatism, while other lenses give you the natural ability to see near and far without glasses. Unlike LASIK surgery, the results from successful cataract surgery should not fade with time. Some of these implanted lenses are acrylic and have a polymer that filters potentially damaging blue light to the retina. There is indirect evidence that the retina, primarily the macula, suffers damage from this short-wavelength light. Conversely, the eye detects circadian cycles of light and dark. This allows for the regulation of sleep and may be interrupted by the lens implant. Theoretically these intraocular lenses may cause insomnia by blocking blue light and creating a condition similar to darkness, subsequently disturbing sleep patterns. A study researching the effect of these lenses, published in Survey of Ophthalmology, opposes the theory. The study displayed no difference in sleep patterns between patients with the blue light filtering lens and standard ultraviolet-blocking intraocular lenses. Therefore, the link between and insomnia and intraocular lenses is not factual. Enjoy the marvel of your sight everyday.

This is done through the use of the sugar paste that is made up of food grade ingredients: sugar, lemon and water. This high concentration of sugar kills the root and the hair does not return. I didn’t invent this method—I wish I had. I credit this ingenious process to the Egyptians. It dates back to the days of Cleopatra. Sweat Success Franco’s Athletic Club— 2011 “Lose Dat” Challenge

Sophisticated Woman | August 2011

WRITTEN BY AMY BOUTON

10

CHRISTIAN LAGARDE PROMISED HIMSELF he would never break the 200 pound mark on the scale. When he broke that promise in December of 2010, his wife gently nudged him into season three of the Lose Dat Challenge at Franco’s Athletic Club in Mandeville. “She dangled the carrot of competition in front of me,” he remembers. “Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine the intensity of the program and the limits I exceeded from day to day and week to week.” Christian, like many Northshore residents, commutes daily to New Orleans. He works in construction marketing. Heavy lifting is not in his job description. He had fallen into the daily pattern of work, fat-laden lunches and huge dinners. Occasionally he would ride his bike or play a pick-up game of football. “I quickly realized after being pushed by my trainer, a sports performance athlete, what an athlete is supposed to be,” he says. “At the start, pleasing Chris Perez [our trainer] was my sole motivation. It was an interesting transition when I realized that I was driving myself.” Christian completed the challenge and rose to individually, finish second overall. He utilized the nutritional expertise of Pure Life Wellness company—a new partner in the Lose Dat Challenge. “There is no way I ever imagined myself becoming so mentally focused and determined. What happened to me in those ten weeks was astonishing. I came away with lasting relationships, a renewed sense of how to fuel my body, and a healthier body overall. I also came away knowing that I helped

to encourage everyone on my team to push themselves to their ultimate best, as they did for me. ” Just the mention of the Dragon Boat Races makes Shequela Cardwell laugh in delightful reminiscence. “Oh my goodness— the Dragon Boat Races! We did four races that day. It was by far the most challenging thing I had done up to that point,” she remembers. As a full time wife and mother, Shequela wants to be around to see her young daughters (seven and four years old) grow up. “It was just time to get on track and live healthier. My oldest daughter’s teacher had done a Lose Dat challenge, so I could see her results. Her situation was the same as mine—two active children, a mom. As time commitment was a concern, I talked it over with my husband, we prayed about it, and the decision was made.” ABOVE: The Red Team was the Overall Champions of the 2011 “Lose Dat” Challenge, losing a total of 299 lbs. combined. Personal Trainer, Rob Jacob, led the team to victory. BELOW: The Dragon Boat Festival in Madisonville this past April, was a perfect Team-building event for “Lose Dat” participants. OPPOSITE PAGE: Shequela (pictured front), along with Red Team teammates, was challenged by Trainer, Rob Jacob, during an unusual workout on Field Day.

2011 “Lose Dat” Top Winners; (left to right) Al Johnson (1st Place) lost 39lbs. and 15.9% Body Fat; Christian Lagarde (2nd Place) lost 29lbs. and 14.4% Body Fat; and Gillian Reardon (4th Place leading female) lost 17.6 lbs and 12.1% Body Fat. “When I found out my overall standing I was utterly flabbergasted. I was indeed proud of myself for not giving up.” (Trainer, Alicia Megison)

“I remember on the first day thinking, ‘I paid for this? I chose this?’ This was the first time I ever actually tried to lose weight, changed my diet, or worked with a trainer.” She did not expect what ultimately unfolded. “It was so enriching—so life-changing. Rob [trainer] pushed me outside my limits. I am stronger than I have ever been. The familylike bonds I formed with Rob, Kathy, Tracey and my teammates—we genuinely care for each other.” Shequela’s own family grew closer as well. “My husband would spend his lunch hour at Franco’s working out and supporting me. He has even started to see his own results. My girls ran around and played while I worked out.” Shequela finished third overall among the women, and the Red Riding Hood and Wolves (her team) won the entire challenge. “Throughout the night, on our drive up to vacation, my team texted everything that was happening during the results ceremony. They sent pictures, they gave updates, and when the call finally came in at about nine thirty, I screamed. I was crying. We actually pulled over and celebrated right then and there.” For small business owner Al Johnson, his wife’s suggestion of entering the Lose Dat Challenge together was met with some reluctance.

LOSE DAT UPDATE! Will McGhee, “Lose Dat 2010” Winner, recently met his goal of 100 lbs weight loss. Congratulations!

Sophisticated Woman | August 2011

“I had no expectations. I had migrated away from the gym. I had never really thought about doing something like this.” What Al came away with continues to astonish him even now. “When I started this I wasn’t a swimmer. I could barely finish a lap. Now, I swim 30 plus laps in an hour. I used to eat a lot of fast food. Now, I eat six to seven small meals a day. We have learned how to budget our calories.” Lose Dat gave Al a fresh outlook on just about every aspect of his life. “My wife Kathy is an inspiration to me. This contest has helped us rekindle our relationship and we support each other because we are both working towards a common goal. I realized that my health comes first before everything else. I no longer work 12 hour days without room for anything else. I make the time to hit the gym.” Al finished first overall for season three (trainer, Fernanda Cristiani) and won the grand prize but the team dynamic and the relationships he has forged from it, is perhaps the defining measure of success for Al. “It’s not about the end or the prize, it’s about the team. Even now, since the challenge has ended, members of our team still work out together every day. Now, I never regret the decision to get out of bed and workout. It gets me going—it starts my day. ” Registration for season four of the Lose Dat Challenge begins Monday, August 15. Season four runs from Monday September 12 through Friday November 18. To register visit Franco’s Athletic Club at 100 Bon Temps Roule in Mandeville or online at www.myfrancos.com/LoseDat,Registration. Call 985-792-0200 for more information.

It’s okay to let your child make mistakes. Make sure you are a positive influence. Your children emulate you, so maintain a positive attitude toward your own activities. If your child senses a negative self image, he/she will be influenced by that. However, be sure that you don’t overcompensate. If your child is having difficulty completing an assignment, let your child know you don’t always succeed the first time. Share with them a similar experience from your own life. Success breeds success, so guide your child toward small successes and watch he/ she start to believe and develop confidence that will last a lifetime!

Sophisticated Woman | August 2011

IF THERE IS ANYONE who knows the value of time, it is Dr. Charles Schof, Jr. of Mandeville Center for Dental Excellence. His plate is perpetually full between his wife (an OBGYN), his three young children, his four pets and his philanthropic volunteer work. Because it is such, Dr. Schof simply gets it. “We are focused on bringing technology into people’s lives to make their necessary dental work fit as efficiently as possible into their busy schedules,” he says. Custom porcelain restorations can be completed in just one visit. “It used to be that people had to schedule multiple appointments for their dental restorations,” he notes. “The new technology allows the dentist to conserve much more tooth structure without reducing the tooth to a peg.” Technological innovations like the E4D—touted by the manufacturer as “Denistry’s Destination.” The E4D is the machine which literally scans the complete structure of the mouth and then generates a 3D model from which a crown or implant is generated. All of this is happening precisely as the preparatory root canal takes place. Once the design is created, the restorative crown is fashioned. “All of this computer-generation takes place while you wait,” he says. “Once we complete the root canal, we can place the crown the same day, so there is no need for a temporary crown and no need for a return visit on another day, to fit the permanent one.” The results combine state-of-the-art technology with skilled, experienced dentistry to create more time for the patient and a crown or implant that is custom fitted to each patient based on the virtual anatomy of their mouth. “We want to save people time and money, and spare then needless discomfort and pain. And the cost is generally about the same as traditional methods.” Dr. Schof has devoted his time to learning as much about the

THERE IS ABSOLUTELY no doubt that Dr. Jessica Perkins of Mandeville Dental Care has found her calling in life. “Ever since the third grade I knew I wanted to become a dentist,” she says. “In fact, my childhood dentist’s bedside manner was such that he made the experience pleasant and I was no longer afraid of the dentist. He is, I can honestly say, the reason I am a dentist today.” He is also one of the people who influenced her current philosophy on patient care. “We cater to the cowards. We will go to great lengths to accommodate any need our patients have to feel comfortable, safe and unafraid,” she notes. “A treatment option that is best for one patient may not be the treatment option that is best for another patient.” To that end, Dr. Perkins, the administration and the staff at Mandeville Dental Care, make sure that each patient is treated as they would like to be treated. “I love the way Dr. Davenport and his wife Cathie work to maintain such a high quality of care for each individual. Our staff is trained this way. We offer comprehensive, cutting edge dental care in a family-friendly atmosphere.” With the most innovative new procedures, including implants which can restore several missing teeth, custom teeth whitening, implants that allow dentures to snap securely into place, Snap-On Smile® to cosmetically repair spaces in the teeth or crooked misshapen teeth, and Lumineers, Mandeville Dental can help to restore patients’ teeth to fully functioning beauty . Dr. Perkins will often treat an entire family. “I love the children. They always brighten my day,” she says. “They need special intricate care and I know we provide it.” Patient education at a young age is vital to long-term oral health. “People often underestimate the importance of oral care,” she says. “We tend to forget that our mouth is the direct passageway to the rest of our body, so all the bacteria that is building up in our mouth is moving directly into our system.” The establishment of good habits at an early age and early detection of existing problems is the key to less aggressive treatment options, as well as more pleasant and comfortable dental visits.

“The big misperception out there is that we are all supposed to lose our teeth. With proper oral health care, early detection and use of modern innovations, we can all enjoy a well-functioning mouth, allowing us a higher quality of life and a beautiful , confident smile for many, many years.” The offices of Mandeville, Hammond and Covington Dental Care are currently offering a teeth whitening special. For $99 receive custom whitening trays and a patient kit. The Mandeville office is located at 2581 Florida Street, Suite A, 985-674-3114. І KIMBERLE TROWBRIDGE

Right Where She Belongs Kimberle Trowbridge— Re-Fuel Nutrition and Blending Station

Sophisticated Woman | August 2011

WRITTEN BY AMY BOUTON

“I like to break down the barriers because achieving fitness is a different journey for everyone.”

FOR PETITE POWERHOUSE Kimmy Trowbridge, nutrition, physical fitness and athleticism have always been part of who she is. “Fitness is my way of life. It has been for as long as I can remember,” she says. As a certified nutrition consultant, AFAA certified personal trainer, professional figure competitor and owner of Re-Fuel Nutrition and Blending Station, Kimmy recalls that, growing up on the Northshore, her parents instilled in her and her three sisters an appreciation for daily activity and a healthy lifestyle. In high school she was a cheerleader, dancer and power lifter. “My parents really made it possible for us to get involved with a multitude of activities. They drove us to all of our practices and lessons,” she notes. “They truly nurtured that tendency.” This well-nurtured tendency fueled Kimmy’s desire to maintain a high level of fitness—and it also fueled her passion for competition. In college, she continued to cheer at LSU and refined her strength and conditioning regimen. After college, Kimmy taught history at Archbishop Hannan High School (AHHS) in Covington, where she also coached the cheerleading squad. She and her husband (then fiancé) Richard, developed and coached AHHS’s current power lifting program. It was then that she was introduced to the sport of figure. Within her first year as a figure competitor, Kimmy competed in three National Physique Committee (NPC) Figure competitions and ultimately won a prestigious national title which elevated her status from amateur to professional. She is now a member of the International Federation of Body Building and Fitness where she competes at the professional level. During competition training, Kimmy realized that the supplements she used daily were not readily available locally. Not only did she have to wait on shipments from other locations, she was also

“Our strength is in our ability to listen to their concerns and find solutions that fit their needs. We do not judge.” she says. After all, even Kimmy has her indulgent moments. “My weakness is cheese fries. Anyone who knows me knows that if it’s on the menu, I am getting it! My philosophy is live and let live.” For Kimmy, helping people improve themselves and reach the goals they have set is her favorite part of the job. The fact that it comes so naturally to her is pure lagniappe. “I feel like I learn something new every day, and every day I am humbled very quickly by nutrition. I really feel like I am exactly where I am supposed to be.” Visit Re-Fuel Nutrition and Blending Station located at 400 River Highlands Boulevard, Suite 1 Covington, 985.893.9131 or visit them at www.re-fuelnutrition.com.

saddled with shipping costs. In addition, she found that when she was out and about in town, finding a healthy fitness friendly snack to meld into her strict diet requirements was virtually unattainable. “These two factors were major catalysts for opening Re-Fuel,” she says. “I began to look at all sides of fitness—especially the nutrition side. As with everything I do, I immersed myself in all there was to learn and earned my nutrition certification. I literally hit my stride.” With the full support of Richard, Kimmy collaborated with a local chef to formulate smoothie recipes and merge complementary fruit pairings. “There are no sugars or artificial sweeteners in anything we sell. In fact, I cut almost all of the fruit myself, with the exception of the mangoes and pineapples which arrive freshly cut from Capitol City produce,” she notes. “It is time consuming, but I feel like if it is healthy enough for me to drink, I am confident serving it.” The same can be said of her vitamin and supplement stock. She researched the finest vitamin, protein and supplement products to stock in-house. “Most of the products I carry are products I can stand by because I have used them, or thoroughly researched them. I can honestly say I am selling someone something in which I believe. This is another reason I chose to open something of my own—I knew that the recipes and product choices would be mine, not those mandated by a chain or corporation.” Through personal consultations, Kimmy and her highly trained staff are able to guide people seeking change as well as people who wish to maintain their current levels of fitness. “I like to break down the barriers because achieving fitness is a different journey for everyone,” she says. “My goal is to teach clients how to arrive at healthy ways of eating for a lifetime, not just for the next three months before they gain it all back.” She has noticed that people often avoid seeking advice for fitness because they fear judgment. “People come in with complaints like joint pain, out of control weight gain, or just a general lack of energy. Our strength is in our ability to listen to their concerns and find solutions that fit their needs. We do not judge. I tell people that if they do not like to work out, find something that you do enjoy,”

How to Recognize Frozen Shoulder

YOU HAVE PROBABLY heard people talk about adhesive capsulitis, or frozen shoulder. It is a very common condition and it can dramatically affect your quality of life. It generally begins as merely a painful shoulder. This could develop from a mild strain of the rotator cuff or possibly some tendinitis. The pain may not seem bad enough to consult a doctor, but when something hurts, we tend not to use it. If the shoulder becomes inflamed, and there is not enough daily movement, the joint capsule and soft tissue can tighten up to the point where full range of motion then becomes impossible. This is when it feels frozen. Daily tasks such as reaching into a cabinet for a glass, buckling your seatbelt, fastening your bra or putting on a shirt or jacket become very challenging if not impossible.

eDitor’s piCKs

Patty, how should I handle my wardrobe when the season changes but the weather stays the same? In the fashion world, we call this season ‘transition.’ My advice is to go with darker colors and lightweight fabrics. In the case of the boots (below), think heavier materials but lighter colors.

It will be boot time soon enough, but start the earlier part of the season in these islet cutout, sandcolored boots. Whether you wear these boots over your favorite skinny jean, or under your boot cut staples, you’re sure to be in style. These soft leather boots are available at Shoelicious 21, $178, 985-893-4080.

This cognac islet cut blazer is the perfect marriage between summer and fall. It has deep neutral color but with linen fabrication. Keep cool, while looking cool. This Yoana Baraschi blazer is available at The Villa, $285, 985-626-9797. Artistic copper pearl necklace also from The Villa, $150.

This embroidered, belted tunic offers great versatility. It can be worn now with white capri leggings and sandals, and later in the in the year, paired with black jeggings and boots. This rayon top is available at Columbia Street Mercantile $49, 985-809-1789.

Sophisticated Woman | August 2011

These Chinese Laundry platforms transition perfectly from now until it’s just too cold for open toes. They provide more coverage than a summer sandal, but they are not as weighty as a boot. These honeycomb caramel sensations are available at Shoelicious 21, $90, 985-893-4080.

This linen charcoal tank dress which can be worn with leggings—is the perfect example of darker colors and cooler fabrics heading into fall. From the Banana Blue collection by Olivia Newton John, this dress represents the ideal for transitional style in South Louisiana. Available exclusively at California Drawstrings Northshore, $225 , 985-327-7300. Metal beadwork necklace also from California Drawstrings Northshore, $40.

Artists and craftsmen are a crucial part of what makes St. Tammany such a great place to live. This fall treat yourself to a piece of original art work, and take advantage of the beauty that our St. Tammany artists provide. Gallery and event listings can be found on the parish website, www.stpgov.org. Click on the Commission on Cultural Affairs link to access the Find an Artist database and more information on the arts in St. Tammany. Sophisticated Woman | August 2011

THE NORTHSHORE is flourishing with artistic creativity. St. Tammany hosts some of the most talented artists in the world, and they bring much appreciated beauty to our lives. During the fall season, St. Tammany Parish hosts a number of events celebrating the arts and culture of our area. With the wide array of works presented across the parish, the coming months may provide the perfect opportunity to consider the acquisition of local artwork for your home or business. Most cultural events take place within the St. Tammany Cultural Districts. These are designated by the state to showcase local talent in the arts. The Cultural District designation permits roughly 40 businesses within these districts to sell tax exempt original artwork. The Cultural Districts in St. Tammany are Fountainebleau in Lacombe, Covington Cultural District, Madisonville Cultural District and the Olde Towne Slidell District. Before purchasing an original piece, visit the galleries within these Cultural Districts. See what work speaks to you and which artists you favor. Talk with the gallery staff to gain insight into the pieces that interest you. Often you may feel more drawn to a piece after you have been told the back story or the history of the artist. In addition to visiting local galleries, search the Find an Artist database on the parish website that lists over 70 visual artists in St. Tammany. Another great way to discover local artists is to take a stroll through the Justice Center where there are over 60 pieces by 53 different local artists. The other parish administrative buildings house the work of another 75 artists. During filming of each artSPARK television show, we visit artists’ studios. The artists demonstrate their processes, and we get to pick their brains on what inspires them and how they have developed their techniques. We gain a deep appreciation for what they pour into each piece. Many artists welcome visitors to their studios. It is a great

A CLIENT WAS IN therapy for grief-related issues and seemed not her usual self, so I asked, “What is it that you haven’t said that you think I need to hear?” Without hesitation but with some reservation, she said, “My mother is acting weird.” “How is that,” I asked. She continued, “She seems distracted. Not interested in eating. Forgets what I just said.” I probed further, “What’s new with her?” She revealed, “She’s started seeing a man from her church.” “Sounds like she is in love,” I said. My client, I think would have preferred dementia. Until this generation, adult children did not as often face seeing their parents date. Ages past, a widowed parent might or might not have dated. Now however, parents live longer and divorce may exacerbate complications. When your parent is seeing someone you find unacceptable, be sure to keep the following in mind. Include the person in family gatherings. While you would prefer to avoid this person’s presence, this gives your parent reasons to be alone with their new mate or in the company of their friends. Including them in family gatherings allows your parent to see them in the light of day and notice their social aptitudes. Invite your parent on a trip, just you two or another of their age-old friends. Enjoy this time. If they do decide to stay together, you will always have this trip to recall. If they part ways, your parent needs to know that you will always welcome them home. You may learn that your parent’s choice isn’t a villain, but a suitable life mate. Your feelings are real, but may not be accurate.

Come to Covington

WRITTEN BY MIKE COOPER, MAYOR OF COVINGTON

MY COLUMN THIS month spotlights Covington’s growing reputation as an entertainment destination. The City of Covington takes great pride in our standing as a cultural arts district. Our historic downtown has worked hard to garner the character of a great place for relaxation, great music, fabulous food and incredible shopping. Recently, with the institution of Covington’s new administration, we’ve made a few changes to our traditional departmental structure. Focusing on Cultural Arts is a top priority and will be undergoing a few changes. To that degree, one of our existing departments will receive a “face lift” and is quickly earning the title of our new Cultural Arts and Events Department. Managed by Aimee Faucheux, this

department will continue Covington’s ongoing efforts, as well as enhance our position in cultural arts and entertainment on the Northshore. In addition to our long-running city sponsored events which include the Symphony Swing in the Pines, Sunset at the Landing concert series, the monthly Columbia St. Block Parties, to name a few, programming efforts at the Covington Trailhead created and initiated by Pam Keller will continue to develop and cultivate under her direction, providing magnetism for entertainment and cultural art enthusiasts. When looking for a great place on the Northshore to unwind, relax, dine and shop—come to Covington— you’ll be glad you did.

Managed by Aimee Faucheux, this department will continue Covington’s ongoing efforts, as well as enhance our position in cultural arts and entertainment on the Northshore.

From 1982–1999, Mr. Zotti owned and operated Zotti’s Antiques in Ponchatoula and was Chamber president from 1991–1993. Liz Anderson and her husband relocated to Ponchatoula in 2005 from the New Orleans area. Add the chili powder and after simmering for about 30 minutes, add the parsley, green onions, Worcestershire sauce, crabs, crabmeat, salt and pepper.
