THERE IS SO much speculation about the heart—both the concrete, and the abstract. The heart holds so much power. It is literally the machine that keeps blood flowing through our bodies, but is also the garden from which all of our wants, fears, needs, dreams and desires spring. It is the place where we are most honest with ourselves. February thrusts the heart into the spotlight, but we rely on the desires of our heart to take us through each day. We follow our hearts desires, put our hearts into it, and give from our hearts every day—many times a day. It is what makes us who we are. It is where we see things most clearly. Our Enterprising Woman this month has My next adventure involves poured her heart and soul into her local something shiny... boutique for over a decade. And if you wish to express which local businesses hold a place in your heart, Northshore’s Best voting is open! No matter how you spend these 29 days of February, remember to care for your beating heart with healthy choices, and trust your heart to lead you through each day. Here is hoping you have many experiences which warm your heart, tug at your heartstrings, and make your heart overflow.

From South of the Border to the Games That Titans Play— Mardi Gras on the Northshore Indulges the Imagination

Sophisticated Woman | February 2012

WITH THE OFFICIAL TWELFTH NIGHT kickoff of the Mardi Gras season behind us, the atmosphere on the Northshore is ringing with revelry as Krewes wrap up final preparations for upcoming festivities. Celebrations grace every possible navigational avenue, from the waterways to main thoroughfares, so every taste should be satiated this Mardi Gras season. The creative fountain will overflow as it does every year with themes like Eve Goes South of the Border, and Games That Titans Play, and Orpheus’ Silver Lining. Slidell’s Krewe of Dionysus will salute the military this year, while the Krewe of Lyra celebrates the Age of Aquarius. Two boat parades will grace the waterways as the Krewe of Bilge kicks off Northshore parades on February 4 at the Marina Café in Slidell. Bilge would like everyone to be aware that the route has reversed from 2011, so please visit their website

As the Original Krewe of Orpheus celebrates its silver anniversary, they will mark the 25-year milestone with a celebration and tribute to the original roots of Mardi Gras, the Brazilian, Carnivale. Instead of their traditional ball, Orpheus will host their own Carnivale. Darius Shad, head of information technology for Orpheus, says this year will mark the first time ever any krewe has paid tribute to the Brazilian roots of Mardi Gras.

“We want to celebrate the origin of Mardi Gras, its roots. The Carnivale was around long before we ever began our celebrations here in this region,” he notes. As always, Mardi Gras will hold in store sights, sounds and sensations which are a feast for the senses. We hope you enjoy every moment. Before you pack up and stake out your spot, remember to prepare in advance so that you and your family enjoy the sights, sounds and the party. Here are a few tips to help you prepare to hit the parade routes.

THIS MONTH WE GET to enjoy Valentine’s Day. What a great chance to show our spouses just how much we love them. Here’s a great, easy way to really show you care. Most people, at one time or another, walk around with aches and pains. If your spouse is like most folks, they probably have an ache somewhere, but are too busy to do anything about it. Why not make Valentine’s Day the occasion when you insist that they see someone for their problem? A great way to do this is to take it upon yourself to make the arrangements for them to see a doctor or physical therapist. This says a couple of things. It says, “I notice that you’re having pain and it matters to me.” It also says, “You matter so much to me that I am going to make sure you get the care you need.”

In fact, if left untreated, the problem generally has a greater chance of getting worse…

I want a Gift Card

It doesn’t need to be an expensive gift. Some physical therapists even offer complimentary consultations. But the important thing is that you care enough to put your spouse and their health first. This isn’t just a thoughtful act, it is smart too. Do you know that if someone has had a significant joint or muscle problem for more than a few weeks, the chances of it improving on its own become increasingly slim? In fact, if left untreated, the problem generally has a greater chance of getting worse, and eventually imposing significant lifestyle limits on the person in pain. So get some help for your spouse and for yourself. Schedule their appointment with your chosen health professional. It is the loving thing to do.

Physical Therapist Matt Slimming has been practicing on the Northshore for 17 years and owns STAR Physical Therapy and STAR Fitness Center with facilities in Covington, Folsom and Slidell. He can be reached at 985-893-2845 or www.StarFitnessCenter.com.

In Sickness WRITTEN BY DR. MARY W. SPEED

VALENTINE’S DAY brings cards, chocolates, flowers—dinners for two. The companionable, robust health of love is the inspiration for poetry and song. Couples shine during this time. Valentine’s Day is their day! So much so, that those without partners shun restaurants and steel themselves from flower deliveries swishing past. Not so often noted however, are couples’ occasions of illness. Recently, my daughter Katie and son-in-law, Mark, went through such a time. Katie had a biopsy and subsequent bad report. For me, time changed. There was the time before the report, then the time after. How would Mark, kind and confident before, manage this news? We waited together for Katie to get through surgery. Mark was attentive, calm and steady. Katie received a good pathology report from followup surgery, and I started breathing again. Katie’s sickness came all of a sudden. She decided one day to have her moles checked. Five moles were removed; one was a malignant melanoma. Her doctor explained that the cancer was on her, not in her. She didn’t look ill. Like I overheard one of her friends say to her at the gym, “You look great.” To which, Katie replied with a laugh, “I know. Everything is great, except the cancer!” Since then, I’ve had my moles checked and two removed; Mark had three removed. We are telling EVERYBODY; get your moles checked by someone who knows what he is looking at. Her excellent physician saved Katie’s life. He said, with his gregarious smile, “All in a day’s work.” That day’s work saved my child’s life, and Mark’s Valentine.

New Year, New Look—New You Marta Bragg, The Villa WRITTEN BY AMY BOUTON PHOTOGRAPHY BY STEVE RANDON

Sophisticated Woman | February 2012

“We are quite frequently the personal

18

shopper for wedding guests, especially when they live out of town,” she notes.

HER EBULLIENCE IS OVERFLOWING and her thoughtfulness, unmatched. Marta Bragg, wife, mother, grandmother and owner and operator of The Villa, was raised in the South, and her convivial, yet spirited manner reflects that. As she enters into the beginning of her second decade at The Villa, she does so in the spirit of renewal. “You have to embrace the New Year. And I like change, I think change is good,” she says. “The changes in the store reflect the changes I have embraced this year. I have picked up some new lines and I have decided to try some new things,” she notes. “It was never my intention to do shoes, but I stumbled upon a designer right here in Louisiana—Dee Keller. She is based in Baton Rouge, but travels to Italy where she hand selects the leather and has the shoes made exclusively for her line. They complement everything I have in the store.” The Villa is warm and welcoming, featuring women’s clothing and accessories comprised of styles that range from trendy to classical and personal gifts that range from luxurious to whimsical. Authentic, personal customer service has been a priority since the day she opened her doors. “We have so much fun here while we work,” she says. “I really cannot handle going into a place where people are unhappy. We want people to come here as they are and know that we are anxious to help them find the right item. There is never any pressure—we simply want them to look and feel great in whatever they choose.”

The Villa is warm and welcoming, featuring women’s clothing and accessories comprised of styles that range from trendy to classical and personal gifts that range from luxurious to whimsical. As a rule, she loves helping people, period. She relishes creating handmade treasures for customers and friends and entertaining at every opportunity. As a grandmother to three under the age of six, she has found what she describes as “pure joy and pure love” in this new role. She spends every ounce of free time available with her grandchildren. With a mother and father who modeled a life of down-to-Earth kindness and service, Marta has found she enjoys much of the same. “My parents were great people,” she notes. “They always had a house full. They were always helping people with little acts of kindness—loving people. I hope that I have passed on to my children that same sense of compassion.” The absolute love of her life however, is her husband of over two decades, Billy. “He is here for me—whatever I need him to do,” she says. “He is my sounding board when it comes to the business and he keeps me in check. He is a wonderful father to our daughters, Nichole and Elizabeth.” As she embraces the inevitable changes that come over time, Marta encourages other women to do the same. “It does not take a whole new wardrobe to breathe life into your look. It can be something as simple as a few new accessories or a new pair of shoes,” she says. Some things however, will always remain the same. “To me, The Villa has always been about genuine, personal service for every person who walks through the door,” she says. “This is something that will never change.” The Villa is located at 1281 North Causeway Blvd., Suite 1 in Mandeville, 985-626-9797. Find them on the web at www.thevilla-mandeville.com.

Sophisticated Woman | February 2012

Marta considers herself the personal stylist of many women over the years, often placing them in clothes they may be timid about picking for themselves. “People sometimes become so accustomed to seeing themselves in certain styles, they are reluctant to venture out of that comfort zone,” she says. “So often I will choose an item for someone, and they will tell me they could never wear that style. I usually insist they try it on, and they absolutely shine. I love helping people in that way.” With clothing lines like Laundry, BCBG, Cynthia Steffe, Yoana Baraschi and Michael Stars, coupled with complimentary alterations, The Villa is overflowing with choices to outfit every woman no matter their size, stature or budget. She scrupulously selects every piece in her jewelry selection, in which she carries a variety of items tailored to the tastes and resources of her clients. “We have recently started carrying pieces that feature vintage religious medals. We carry an exclusive line of wrap watches and bracelets by La Mer.” Some of her favorite jewelry artists include, Susan Shaw, Avindy, J. Lauren and Grace George. The vast selection of gift items such as locally crafted Beatriz Ball Fine Metalware, make The Villa the go-to spot for hostess, bridal party, wedding and personal gifts. Marta is currently in the process of creating a wedding registry. “We are quite frequently the personal shopper for wedding guests, especially when they live out of town,” she notes. “Brides will mention our selection, guests call us, and we take it from there with personal, professional service.”

Perfection isn’t for everyone… but it could be for you!

In Tune With Nature WRITTEN BY ANNA RIBBECK

When you become a gardener, taking interest in the land, you are “in tune” with Mother Nature as you lend a helping hand. She is number one supporter in most everything we do, as she quietly plays a part in making dreams come true. She has a host of workers who have jobs to do each day. They come into our gardens to help— each in a different way. Don’t ever kill a honey bee, they are important in the gardening plan. They pollinate the flowers of fruits and vegetables in our land. Earthworms aerate the compost, adding nutrients to the soil. Sun heats up the garden. Rain keeps it from packing. Their ultra heat and water help is never slacking. The ladybugs are tiny, but their strength is undiminished, as they gobble up the aphids and fight them to the finish. When you study, learn and understand Nature’s helping way. Your work will become an easy task and a tribute to your day.

MAKE SURE YOUR house plants have not been forgotten. Place them inside near a sunny window, or in an airy room away from drafts, heaters or vents. Pothos, Spathiphyllum, and miniature palms are some inside favorites. The greenhouse should have water in bowls for humidity and the temperature set at around 50 degrees. Use a fan to keep fresh air flowing in and out. All plants should be checked for disease before entering the greenhouse or your home, or disease may spread throughout. Be aware that your plants will automatically rotate toward the sun, so turn them frequently so they are not lopsided. If a plant becomes sickly, check soil, aerate it and look for mites, aphids or overwatering. Evacuate it immediately for inspection and cure. Happy thoughts of spring, new designs in the garden, appreciating and working with Mother Nature will always live uppermost in the heart of a person loving and understanding gardening. Happy year ahead!

When you study, learn and understand Nature’s helping way. Your work will become an easy task and a tribute to your day. 7015 Hwy 190 E Service Rd, Ste 203, Covington 985.801.0216 • www.premierlaser.com

What can Impact Retirement Goals? RETIREMENT IS A TIME that many look forward to for years. Many of us are taking the right steps—gauging our risk tolerance, investing early, dollar cost averaging, diversifying and rebalancing assets, and focusing on the long term. During retirement our earned income stops and many of our preretirement expenses continue. When retirement finally arrives, the hope is we’ll have sufficient income from our savings and investments to meet our expenses and realize our desired lifestyle. Many people spend a lot of time preparing to achieve that goal, but most do not realize that the time spent preparing for a disability should not be any different. Working interdependently, retirement and disability income planning may help to replace a portion of lost earned income. You may think the two scenarios are much different, but from a cash flow standpoint, they are almost the same. If you become disabled, two things will happen: your earned income will stop, but many of your pre-disability expenses will continue—just like in retirement. Your monthly household expenses such as rent/mortgage, property taxes, etcetera, during retirement are almost identical to what your monthly household expenses would be during a disability. If sufficient income during retirement is a primary goal, then sufficient income during a disability is equally as important. If you had to draw from your savings and retirement assets during a disability, how long would those assets last?

Time to let the Good Times Roll

WRITTEN BY FREDDY DRENNAN,

I INVITE YOU AND YOUR FAMILY and friends to come experience Mardi Gras in Slidell. Grab your folding chairs, ice chests and king cakes and head on out to the parade route to enjoy the many parades that roll through Slidell. I am proud that many families choose to celebrate Mardi Gras here in Slidell. I ask that everyone be respectful and help us maintain a fun, family-friendly environment. Please remember that city ordinances prohibit the presence of animals along the parade route. The use of Silly String, streamers, fireworks and

other explosive devices are also restricted. It is important that we all work together to have a fun and safe carnival season. Keep Slidell Beautiful is looking for volunteers to help clean up after the parades. If you or your family, church group, civic group or school group would like to volunteer, please visit Keep Slidell Beautiful’s website at www.keepslidellbeautiful.org for a list of volunteer times and locations. Laissez Les Bons Temps Rouler!

MAYOR OF SLIDELL

Come to the Mardi Gras!

WRITTEN BY DONALD VILLERE, MAYOR OF MANDEVILLE

WE’RE READY TO ROLL FOR MARDI GRAS! The Krewe of Eve will parade on February 10th, and Orpheus and Lyra on February 17th, both at 7:00 p.m. Parade routes can be found on our website, www.cityofmandeville.com. Please remember to keep the entire family safe. Glass is banned from the parade routes. Ladders, scaffolding and platforms of any type must be placed at a distance, and must not be fastened together with other ladders and platforms. Our alcohol free zone returns on West Causeway Approach between the Woodstone and Weldon Park subdivisions. Animals are encouraged to rest up and prepare for the Mystic Krewe of Mardi Paws. This year it will be held on Sunday, February 26 at 2 p.m. and the theme is “Mardi Paws goes BARK IN TIME!” There are many ways to explore this year’s theme, just un-leash your imagination to showcase anything retro to celebrate your favorite decade.

Remember to keep our streets clean and litter-free. We are participating in the Cleanest City Contest, a state program sponsored by the Louisiana Garden Club Federation and the judging is at the end of March. We are asking all of our residents to spruce up and help our city shine. Construction has begun on the Westside pedestrian/ bike path connection that begins at West Causeway Approach. As part of Mandeville’s Master Bicycle and Pedestrian Pathways project, this pedestrian/bike path connection will link existing sidewalks along West Causeway Approach to sidewalks at Monroe Street. Work shall consist of an approximately 10 foot wide, 5,000 foot long path including an approximately 200 foot bridge crossing over Bayou Chinchuba. Mandeville is a great place to live, work and play. Let’s keep it that way!

Fun-filled Evening Helps to Promote Ponchatoula

34

WRITTEN BY LIZ ANDERSON PONCHATOULA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

OFTEN, WHEN TRAVELING the highways of our great nation, a roadside billboard catches my eye and takes me to towns, stores and restaurants I never would have encountered otherwise. The Ponchatoula Chamber of Commerce has effectively spent over $20,000 annually on billboards with the goal of drawing travelers off the interstate to shop in America’s Antique City, to purchase strawberries, and to dine and do business with our many friendly retailers and businesses. The Tangipahoa Tourist Commission and the City of Ponchatoula contribute to purchasing billboard space. February Fun Fever, to be held this year on the evening of February 10, is the Chamber’s primary fundraiser specifically dedicated to fill in the balance of

monies for this cause. Past participants declare it’s an annual event they would not miss, with both silent and live auctions, a holey board tournament, music and plentiful food and spirits, all for $20 a ticket. This year’s theme is “Hobos and Hillbillies” promising a fun-filled evening of overalls, straw hats and corncob pipes! Of course, if you are unable to purchase tickets or come to the event, the Chamber is welcoming donations of objects de arte and other items, services and activities to be sold at auction. For more information on donating or attending February Fun Fever, please call the Chamber office at 985-386-2536. Come on, y’all! Put on your hobo and hillbilly apparel and join the fun!
