DID YOU KNOW the human body has an estimated 100 trillion microorganisms living in the bowel? These helpful bacteria, known as flora, fight off infection, aid digestion and nutrient absorption, and keep harmful bacteria from wreaking havoc on your body. With all of these important functions, everyone should take the proper steps to aid in the health of these helpful bacteria. Supplementing with probiotics is a great way to ensure the safeguarding of these helpful bacteria, allowing them to perform these important tasks within our bodies and maintain the balance of our digestive and immune health. Probiotics, meaning “for life” are supplements containing live microorganisms. These microorganisms prove to be extremely beneficial to the human body. They will help to maintain and restore the body’s natural flora.
These helpful bacteria, known as flora, fight off
infection, aid digestion and nutrient absorption, and keep harmful bacteria from wreaking havoc on your body. Stress, travel and suppressed immune systems are all times when the body will benefit greatly from taking probiotics. However, one of the most crucial times to restore the body’s natural flora is immediately after finishing an antibiotic. Antibiotics can be very helpful in fighting the bacteria that make a body sick. They can also deplete a body’s natural flora. Probiotics, taken immediately after one finishes antibiotics, can help to restore the depleted flora.

Mandeville— An Idyllic Place to Call Home
Sophisticated Woman | July 2011
WRITTEN BY MARLAINE PEACHEY PHOTOGRAPHS BY ALIA CASBORNÉ
10
IN A CITY THAT spans only a five mile radius, Mandeville holds a special place in the heart of its residents. Known for its breathtaking beauty, spectacular sunsets, award-winning schools, low crime, distinctive dining, family recreation, relaxed lifestyle and a variety of places to worship, Mandeville offers an abundance of opportunities for residents of all ages. Here you’ll find friendly neighbors who have come to enjoy the good life in a community with strong family values. Mandeville is home to dining delicacies that will tempt your taste buds and confirm the legacy of our restaurants’ legendary reputations. Ambiance here is a natural resource. Money Magazine ranked the city as one of the top 100 school systems in the nation’s major metropolitan areas. Rather than closed in malls, Mandeville is home to plenty of openair shopping complexes including major stores. The lakefront area outlines the historic section of Old Mandeville, filled with homes that have been the happy residences of generations of proud citizens. Winding gracefully through our pine forest canopy, the Tammany Trace offers exercise to walkers, joggers and bicyclists who often gather at our Mandeville Trailhead, a cultural interpretative center that includes an amphitheater for concerts and theatrical performances. The Trailhead is also home to our Depot Museum and an interactive water park. Here, every Saturday morning from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. the Community Market opens to local vendors offering a wide variety of items, while musicians perform live on center stage. Only one block away you’ll find the birthplace of jazz on the Northshore at the Dew Drop Social and Benevolence Hall, where Louis Armstrong is said to have played. Lake Pontchartrain is our crowning jewel, teeming with fresh fish, blue crabs and Louisiana shrimp. You can also fish at your leisure on the Mandeville Fishing Pier located at Sunset Point. The Mandeville Harbor launches a variety of boaters set to enjoy the “Mandeville blue” brackish waters of Lake Pontchartrain. Our spectacular lakefront, dotted with graceful oaks and magnolias offers a walking path and occasional benches, perfect for enjoying a tranquil view that is second to none. Many have chosen to exchange wedding vows beneath the century old oaks. The charm and beauty of Mandeville will draw you back time and again. It is a town rich in noble history, environment and resources. As any resident will attest, there is no more idyllic place to live.

Highly Specialized Technology Gives Couples New Options in Fertility couples might choose to freeze the eggs instead of the embryos and they will always have those eggs.” Because fertility is very much age-related Dr. Dickey encourages every woman to find out early about their fertility potential. “Your eggs will fall off in fertility as they age. We can do an antral follicle count at almost any age, to find out how many eggs you actually have.” The quality and the quantity of a woman’s eggs drops significantly between the ages of 25 and 40, and older eggs are often not as healthy, so the sooner a woman tunes in to her own fertility, the more likely she will be to have fertility success. “IVF has the potential to give you many things, but it cannot give you good eggs,” he says. The Fertility Institute has offices in Mandeville, Metairie and Baton Rouge. New patients, whether physician, or selfreferred, are welcome at any of the Fertility Institute’s clinics. Call for an appointment at 800-375-0048. Visit their website at www.FertilityInstitute.com.

IN 1976, RICHARD M. DICKEY, MD, PH.D set out to treat, diagnose and research infertility and recurrent miscarriage when he founded the Fertility Institute of New Orleans. Their first in vitro fertilization (IVF) procedure in 1983, was successful in placing the Fertility Institute on the cutting edge. Today, the stellar success rates of IVF with 51 percent of implantation cycles in women under 35 and in women 35 to 37 years of age resulting in pregnancy, and procedures like pre-implantation testing of embryos and egg cryopreservation, the Fertility Institute of New Orleans continues to open doors for candidates with both fundamental needs and intricate, highly specialized fertility options. “We primarily offer pre-implantation testing to pinpoint common genetic disorders, and to pinpoint specific inherited diseases like cystic fibrosis. Since January we have been able to test all 23 pairs of chromosomes” Dr. Dickey says. This complete reading of the genetic makeup of an embryo before a couple decides whether or not to proceed with the implantation, is in contrast to an amniocentesis, which happens 14 weeks into pregnancy. “Pre-implantation testing offers couples for whom pregnancy termination is not an option, a clearer picture of the genetic health of the embryo, so that they can make a more informed choice.” Cancer treatments like chemotherapy and radiation can often render a woman infertile. The Fertility Institute of New Orleans may offer a small glimmer of hope with egg cryopreservation. “We can freeze her eggs before treatment begins. This program is conducted under strict investigational protocol, to gauge its success and ensure that it works,” Dr. Dickey notes. For couples already undergoing IVF, cryopreservation offers the option to freeze eggs instead of embryos. “We only implant two embryos at a time and we freeze the extras. With this alternative,

A Skillfully Guided Path to Home Ownership Stephanie Machado— NOLA Lending Group ,LLC
Sophisticated Woman | July 2011
WRITTEN BY AMY BOUTON PHOTOGRAPHY BY STEVE RANDON
20
“People need to know that if they have a question for me and it is after hours, I understand the restless feelings that arise when they are waiting on answers concerning their mortgage.”
AT 23 YEARS OLD, Stephanie Machado was already a homeowner. The fact that she was a discontented homeowner may be the exact reason why she is where she is today—a senior loan officer with NOLA Lending Group. “My whole buying experience was unpleasant. I was young and had just graduated college. Everything that could go wrong went wrong. I was recommended not to have a home inspection because the REO company would not repair anything. My loan officer placed me in a three-year adjustable rate mortgage, and shortly after I closed on the home it was infested with termites. Then, 18 months later Katrina hit—at which point I realized I did not have enough insurance,” Stephanie recalls. The staggering reality of the peaks and valleys of home ownership made Stephanie realize that homebuyers need guidance and useful information if they are going to make informed and wise purchases. So, instead of entering law school as she had originally planned, she returned to school where she earned her MBA. “I really just fell into the mortgage and loan industry,” she says. “But when a person is purchasing a home, I put myself in their shoes, because I have been there.” Since that first purchase that threw her into homeowner oblivion, Stephanie has purchased and sold other homes. As a senior loan officer she guides every homebuyer through all of the crucial aspects they must explore before making such a significant purchase. “This is one of the most important transactions in a person’s life. We want to make sure we give them the support they need.” To that end, Stephanie walks each client through basic elements of the process like asking them what kind of house note they are comfortable with paying. Stephanie is also a stalwart proponent of educating homebuyers on the necessity of purchasing suitable homeowner’s insurance. “You may not want to buy a house in a higher
ABOVE TOP: The NOLA Lending team, along with their spouses, were awarded with a Sales Incentive trip to DisneyWorld this past May. ABOVE LEFT: Stephanie and Jason vacationing in St. Lucia. ABOVE RIGHT: Stephanie enjoys one of her favorite past times, spending time with her nephew, Justin.
Though she loves her work and thoroughly enjoys doing it, Stephanie does carve out time to relax with her significant other, Jason. “We love to travel,” she says. “We are really fond of the beach and the islands, but this year we are planning something a little different—a trip to New York.” During the fall, Saints games offer them a break from the norm and a chance to see Stephanie’s favorite players—Lance Moore and Drew Brees—in action. Here at home, Stephanie and Jason enjoy working on their Covington home and dining out at local restaurants. And she always finds the time to play favorite aunt to her nine-year-old nephew. “We’ve dedicated a room just for him. When he comes over, he has a place to do the things he likes to do, like play video games and watch television,” she says. “I definitely look forward to our time together.” As for her future, “I definitely see plans for marriage and family down the road,” she says. But for now, she remains committed to helping people fulfill their dreams of home ownership. “I am passionate about what I do and I enjoy doing it,” she says. “We do believe that knowledge is power. Really, the hardest part is finding the right home. We want this part to be easy.” Stephanie Machado can be reached at 985-612-2146 or by email at sm@nolalending.com. price range just because you can afford the principal and interest payment. People should remember to factor insurance and taxes into the note and decide how much money they want to put toward the house note each month. One mistake many buyers make is that they do not gauge the actual costs of buying a house,” she says. “We have products to guide the customer from start to finish through the entire process. We can help you purchase the best insurance, find the right title company, and inspector. We work in tandem and build relationships with companies to ensure the best service.” Stephanie has found her home at NOLA Lending Group to be a cohesive fit, in part because of the unmatched level of service and accessibility. “We work with clients to get them on the path to home ownership. We want to give them the tools to get them into it the right way,” she notes. They help current homeowners find the best product for their refinance and purchase needs. Stephanie credits her assistant Courtlin Donner with maintaining seamless attention to every client’s needs. Their team is always accessible, calls are answered promptly and clients have minimal waits during what almost always proves to be an anxious time. “People need to know that if they have a question for me and it is after hours, I understand the restless feelings that arise when they are waiting on answers concerning their mortgage. Myself, or someone from my team, usually Courtlin, is always there to offer support. I like to build relationships. My clients are not just the next transaction.” Because all loans through NOLA Lending Group are underwritten in-house, clients also have the advantage of someone handling their transaction locally and personally. “We are not waiting three to five days for answers—we are sitting in the middle of the operations,” Stephanie says. “We are able to give better, quicker, more accessible service to every client. We simply walk over to someone’s desk, rather than wait for them to call.”

I CAN STILL HEAR my mother’s voice every time I talk to a patient about posture, “Stand tall! Shoulders back! Stomach in!” I realize now, that she may have actually had a point—even if she was unaware of how my spine would benefit. The growing problem of slouching today continues to get worse as we spend more time as inactive adults stuck in front of computers for work, and as our children spend their summers in front of the television playing video games. It is a bad habit that conveys weakness and insecurity, and slouching also contributes to chronic neck and lower back pain. Slouching puts pressure on your vertebrae, ultimately causing discs to become compressed. It makes you vulnerable to back pain, and pelvic muscles lose their strength and stability, which makes it even harder as we age to support a well-aligned stance. Pinched nerves and tightened muscles in the neck ultimately cause tension and stress to accumulate throughout the shoulders and upper back. To break the poor posture habit, increase the strength of your abdominal and back muscles. No time for stomach crunches? Simply pull your navel to your spine and hold it in for 10 seconds. This can be done almost anywhere. Follow this by squeezing your shoulder blades together and holding that position for 10 seconds. Repeat this two to four times. Consider spending money on high-quality orthopedic shoes. If those are not your style, forego the flip-flops, high heels, and other footwear with no support except on occasion. Choose shoes that provide legitimate arch support. Most importantly, become conscious of your posture and routinely make an effort to start practicing good habits—today.

Destination Wedding WRITTEN BY DR. MARY W. SPEED
IN MAY, MY DAUGHTER, Katie and I went to Guatemala for my son’s wedding. For the first time we met Rosa, his bride, and her nine year old daughter, Kimberly. He is serving at an orphanage, Casa Bernabe, and has influence—as is evidenced by children wearing “Who Dat?” shirts, but in greater ways too— like this one. A little boy came up to me, and said in Spanish, “Que la madre de David?” (Are you David’s mother?) I nodded yes and said, “Si.” This child wrapped his arms around me, When doing looked up at me, and said, “Gracias.” activities like I don’t understand how a place so far away in culture can have captured David so fully, hoeing, make yet it is so. I do know this—years ago when I hands freque was the director of a local youth ranch, David was part of that work. When the facility faced financial trouble, he gave me his piggy bank and said, “Here Mom. Give it to the children.” The first summer the facility was awarded The Safe and Drug-Free Schools Governor’s Grant, I didn’t have enough children identified from the community as at-risk to attend, so I signed David up to go, and frankly worried about what I was exposing him to. He went the extra mile. There early, he helped prepare and serve the other campers breakfast. He is serving now in a whole other language. You can follow his work at www.davidspeedmissions.com. One hundred sixty children, from eight houses attended the wedding, and all had their pictures taken with Rosa, David and Kimberly. As part of their wedding ceremony, Rosa and David poured salt from two glasses into one signifying their unity, their calling, their destiny. Adios—la madre de David.

Patty, are Maxi dresses still in?
Yes, they have returned for several seasons now. The designers brought us a new silhouette, the consumers kept it due to comfort and ease. There are a few things to keep in mind when choosing the right maxi for you. Pay attention to design details like straps, bodice style, length and fabric.

Her Money, Her Investments
WRITTEN BY BECKY GUSTAFSON BUDD
FACED WITH LOANS and with an eye toward owning a car or a home, many twenty-something women think saving for “old age” can wait. But the need is more urgent. Any woman who wants to secure her future needs to begin today by taking time to consider investments and retirement planning. Here are basic steps that can move you closer to financial self-reliance. Establish solid goals. Concrete objectives give you something tangible to strive for and make it easier to assign a price tag to goals. Establish your goals, set a time frame, list the steps you need to get there, and implement your plan. Start now. Assess your financial position. Take a critical look at finances. Consider asking a financial professional for help in calculating where you stand. Know what investments you have and how much they are worth. Estimate how much you will have saved by retirement and how long that will last you based on your lifestyle. Create a solid portfolio. Young investors should start as soon as possible to research financial information and start saving. Even seemingly small amounts of saving now can help build future stability and eventual wealth.

Stay in the Know During Storm Season
WRITTEN BY FREDDY DRENNAN, MAYOR OF SLIDELL
I ENCOURAGE EVERYONE to prepare now for the coming storm season. Reports indicate that the 2011 hurricane season is expected to be an active year, so please plan ahead. If a storm does head our way, I encourage everyone to stay informed and act promptly. I can assure you that the City of Slidell is prepared should a hurricane come our way. We will continue to use every means at our disposal to reach you with information about evacuation orders and instructions. As in years past, we will post all information to our city website, www.slidell.la.us. In an effort to provide information directly to you, we will continue to reach beyond typical web updates and press conferences and incorporate the use of Twitter, Facebook and Slidell TV on YouTube. Twitter enables subscribers to receive instant updates via email or their cell phones anytime an update is posted. For a free subscription, simply sign on to twitter.com to establish your account, then click the “follow” link at www.twitter.com/SlidellSOS, which is the city’s emergency news account.
We will also be posting information on the City of Slidell’s official Facebook page, which allows people to receive news updates and view photos and videos. To join Facebook and create a free account, go to www.facebook.com. Members can search for the official “City of Slidell” page and click the “like” button to subscribe. All of these services can be accessed from virtually anywhere, whether it’s a cell phone, laptop or tablet device. Even if you evacuate, you can get continuous updates about Slidell. I encourage you to take advantage of these useful capabilities.
Flood Insurance Premiums Will be Lowered
WRITTEN BY DONALD VILLERE,
Sophisticated Woman | July 2011
MAYOR OF MANDEVILLE
34
I AM PLEASED to report that citizens of the City of Mandeville will be receiving a reduction in their flood insurance premiums. FEMA has agreed to allow the city its own community-based map, which has an effect of lowering the base flood elevation from one to three feet, resulting in significant savings. We are well into hurricane season, so please stay prepared. We will remain with the city during a storm event, so if you must evacuate, keep in touch with our website or call the office at any time, day or night. Please sign up for hurricane notifications on our front webpage. The Mandeville Seafood Festival will be held July 1–4 at Fontainebleau State Park. Seniors 65 and over, active military personnel and children ten and under (when accompanied by an adult) are admitted free. For a complete itinerary of events, go to www.seafoodfest.com.
The city contracted with landscape architects Regan Contois and Kathy Stites to spruce up the gazebo area with new landscaping and brick work. The gazebo will now feature an eight foot garden around the base with colorful and hardy plant material. Two small garden beds will line the walkway from the street to the gazebo, bordered with old St Louis Brick. We are also refurbishing the capped well head into a fountain area. The boxwoods that once lined the area were incorporated into the new design. In addition to a few live oaks, there will be a simple walkway lined with old St. Louis brick to connect the seawall to the new fountain area. Information on items in this article and information on the current happenings in Mandeville can be found on our website, www.cityofmandeville.com.
We will remain with the city during a storm event, so if you must evacuate, keep in touch with our website or call the office at any time, day or night. Continued on page 37

How to Lose Your Muffin Top I HEAR IT ALL the time—clients joking about their “muffin tops.” Just what is a muffin top? Well basically it refers to LOVE HANDLES! Call it what you will, but no matter, it is located in the area of the suprailiac. It is most common in teenagers, but you can spot on people of any age. People who do have a muffin top are not always obese or overweight in fact, they may actually appear somewhat tone. So, what’s the paradox here? Studies show that this area and fat storage are directly associated with an over abundance of carbohydrates. Americans are carbo-fanatics! Unfortunately, that’s why love handles and muffin tops are becoming so common here in the good ol’ USA. Why are carbs the culprit? Blame it on insulin. You see, the body actually wants to use fat as energy. However doing anything that causes insulin levels to rise rapidly, causes the body to shuttle blood sugar to the liver, muscle tissue and most importantly, to the adipose tissue (aka body fat). Insulin, in essence is a storage hormone.

Planning aWedding? Boomsday is great No a selection! We have Dooms-day
WRITTEN BY MIMI NOTHACKER
BOOMSDAY IS A rollicking novel, which satirizes a serious problem. It describes the inevitable conflicts in the United States between the “baby boom” generation and the young adults of the following generation. The young adults realize that they are supporting the self-absorbed Boomer’s retirement and eventual dotage with their Social Security payments. In the words of the novel, “20 year olds will be paying for 30 years of incontinence.” The main character, Cassandra is a likeable, sympathetic, Red Bull-swilling, twenty-something who becomes an influential blogger. Along the lines of Jonathan Swift’s “A Modest Proposal,” she suggests that the government give the Boomers incentives to kill themselves at retirement age. The proposed “voluntary transitioning” package includes supplying copious amounts of drugs to bring “the wrinklies” peacefully to the end. Although Cassandra’s voluntary transitioning strategy is a dramatic ploy to highlight the government’s problem of financing 70 million baby boomers in retirement, there are many people who like the idea and take it seriously. Author Christopher Buckley ridicules duplicitous politicians, the advertising industry, the culture of spin, old people, young people and the U.S. culture in general. He also lampoons the American presidents and presidential candidates whose conversations provide the novel with a smorgasbord of always inappropriate four letter words. Boomsday provides intelligent humor, sharp satire, and simple silliness.

The Strength is in the Pack
WRITTEN BY MIKE COOPER, MAYOR OF COVINGTON
BORN AND RAISED in Covington, the elder sibling of five children, I learned from my parents the importance of strong leadership, devotion to family, and an appreciation for public service. Watching my dad, Ernest J. Cooper, serve Covington as Mayor from 1967 to 1991, I learned early on the significance of community service. A graduate of St. Paul’s High School, our respected team motto “the strength of the wolf is in the pack” serves as an incredibly practical life lesson. Since the April 2 election, I have been preparing for a smooth transition with outgoing Mayor Candace Watkins and current, and newly elected Council members. My team pledges to be that strong “pack,” as we join with our City Council to continue to move Covington onward. I am fully committed to maintaining and enhancing
the quality of life in Covington, where people are proud to be and to call home. A focus on business development, ease of traffic flow and neighborhood policing efforts are part of my initial goals. Working to expand relationships with federal, state and parish governments to ensure funding and cooperation, are vital to my vision for Covington. I look forward to an enterprising initial term in office, diligently serving my hometown. Please join me for “Coffee with Mayor Cooper” at the Covington Trailhead on Wednesday, July 27 at 9 a.m. Forming a “partnership in progress” with each of you and speaking candidly about our city will only strengthen our “pack.” I sincerely appreciate your support and enthusiasm as Covington embraces the future.

OUR SECOND annual Citywide Yard Sale in June, was a success of gigantic proportion. Well planned and executed by chairperson, Brenda Ernst and her hard working committee, over 60 addresses were posted on a map provided to shoppers, who bought up bargains from 8 a.m.–3 p.m. Free water stations kept shoppers hydrated during the hot day. People from far and near also lunched in our restaurants, filled our shops to the brim, and then hit the yard sales again until everything was sold. Habitat for Humanity kindly took away any leftovers. Our Summer Brown Bag Series was also a huge success. ONE OF THE MOST beautiful and exotic plants is the orchid. Not only are they extraordinary, but they are diverse. The orchid is so highly developed that it can adapt to almost any environment. They exist at sea level, across deserts and marshes, and are even found upon high mountain ridges. This is a plant that even a novice can grow and enjoy. About five hundred years ago, orchids were unknown in the western world. The British brought them to the new world and named them Epidendrum (meaning upon a tree). During the Victorian era, these beautiful, exotic plants became a status symbol and quickly graced the estates of the very wealthy. Today, the orchid is easily obtained and easily sustained. The graceful blooms last longer than those of any other plant. The leaves are not plentiful but neither are their demands. It loves to grow in a simple osmunda fiber surrounded by chopped bark. Orchids also enjoy low light and a good misting. This adaptable plant reproduces through the help of insects. The purpose of the beautiful blooms is to attract moths, bees, flies and other flying insects—even
though we like to think the showy blooms are strictly for our enjoyment. Orchid roots will hang over the side of its pot and crawl above and under its bark foundation. Outside, an orchid should be placed under trees or in very shady areas. Natural misting will occur each day from the orchid’s tree companions as photosynthesis occurs. Orchids love the humidity we have here. Water the base once a week, but mist often whether inside or out. This plant does not need to be near a window. A simple container filled with rocks and then the special orchid loam and bark works well inside or out. Change the soil and repot every year, otherwise just water sparingly and keep the plant out of drafts and away from fumes. When the blooms die, you may trim the stalk halfway back or remove it completely. It will take a little time for the orchid to go back into its bloom mode. During that period, give the plant a little more light and some fertilizer and wait patiently for its next burst of glory. Living with an orchid is like traveling to an exotic place and being in the company of a true wonder of Nature. Get one today!
The orchid is so highly developed that it can adapt to almost any environment.
