We met up with our Enterprising Woman Michelle Demarest Sunseri at Air Salon and Blow Dry Bar in Mandeville. She prepared for her photo shoot by relaxing and having her hair and makeup professionally done by Madison Carrington. We were able to see a different side of Michelle by asking her a few questions that weren’t a part of the EW interview. SW: What did you have for breakfast this morning? MS: A “green” drink—spinach, avocado, blueberry, flax, sugar-free vanilla pudding and stevia. It tastes like pistachio ice-cream. Our 19-year-old came up with the base and it evolved. SW: What were you doing before you arrived for hair and makeup? MS: Work out around 5 a.m., go home and get ready, get my daughter off to school. Then to the office or court! SW: What is your favorite song at the moment? MS: “Oceans” by Hillsong United. SW: Of what accomplishment are you proudest? MS: My kids, she said with a smile.
409 W. 21st Avenue, Covington, LA 70433 Phone: 985-893-7350, Fax: 985-893-7686 e-mail: editor@sophisticatedwoman.com
SW: If you were stranded on a desert island and could only take three things, what would you take? MS: You’re going to laugh… my pink curlers, a container of salt (because if I’m going to eat something it has to have salt) and my Bible.

publisher’s note
....................................................................... APRIL IS A BUSY month here at Sophisticated Woman. Not only do we publish our annual Northshore’s Best Issue (see the pullout in the center of the magazine), but we also honor last year’s Enterprising Women (and Man!) at our Hats Off luncheon on Friday, April 7. It’s time to don a new hat (get creative and decorate your own to celebrate the many “hats” you wear in life—you might even win an award), and join us at the new Greystone events venue in Mandeville. This year’s event promises to be better than ever as emcee Moe Clary reveals who you, the readers, chose as the 2016 Enterprising Woman of the Year. Kim Holden, award winning co-anchor at Fox News, will inspire us with her keynote speech. And fabulous silent auction items will tempt you while supporting the Humane Society of Louisiana’s efforts to provide shelter, food and medical care for Northshore animals, especially those still displaced from last year’s flood. You can purchase tickets online at sophisticatedwoman. com or by calling 985-893-7350. But hurry—it’s usually a sellout. Did I mention the Northshore’s Best? Thousands of SW readers voted for their favorite places to eat and shop for everything from clothes to wine to personal services. They shared their preferred healthcare facilities, services and providers. And they voted for their favorite professionals, such as lawyers, CPAs and teachers. They even let us know the best places for girls’ night out; for learning to act, model or play music; and for boarding your family pet. So, hang on to your copy. It will be a valuable resource for what’s best on the Northshore throughout the year.

Laying the Green Egg WRITTEN BY LISA RIBBECK LYONS
SPRING HAS SPRUNG
and clocks have too, but did we even have winter this year?! It has definitely been a warm one, so my gardening advice is a little different this April. This year, take the time to trim and clean in preparation for a real growth surge. April will probably start off with warm, sunny weather and as always, we’ll see heavy showers later in the month. The Farmer’s Almanac is usually a good source for what to expect weather-wise and also what we should be planting. Old wives’ advice says we should never plant tender, young annuals before Good Friday, and this usually holds true. So, spend the beginning of the month preparing your home and gardens for a successful summer and you can’t go wrong. Before you clean out the flower beds, get up on the roof and remove pine needles and the remnants of winter leaves. Gutters need a good flushing and overhanging branches should be clipped away. While you’re up there, look for hornets’ nests and signs of insect infestation. A good house washing will complete your main frame spruce up. And who doesn’t enjoy looking at a clean exterior? Next, power-wash the driveway and exterior walkways. Use a paint sprayer to saturate the areas with biodegradable soap mixed with bleach and water. This will help loosen green moss and stains when you hit the areas with the pressure

washer. I tend to stay away from heavy chemicals and find that bleach and laundry detergent will usually do the trick. They also kill most insects! While you have the bleach handy, wash out birdbaths and bird feeders. Purchase a spray-on fertilizer that attaches to your hose. Give all bushes and gardens a good dose of fertilizer after you have trimmed and cleaned them. Use a garden fork to aerate soil around your bushes before you spray the fertilizer. This will help fertilizer reach the roots. If you have a compost heap, now is also a good time to turn that soil and add some new coffee grounds and veggie peelings. You’ll have excellent topsoil for your late month annual plantings. Get to some local garage sales and keep your eyes open for unusual containers to plant your favorite herbs, perennials or summer bloomers. These will add interest to beds under trees where roots may be an issue. Also, watch for sales on potting soil and mulch. Much of summertime garden enjoyment comes from these preliminary preparations. Now is the time to lay the eggs for the birth of summer. Following the bunny is not just an Easter tradition; it is a gardening one as well. Hope you are blessed with lots of eggs from your bunny!

Dr. Paul J. Gordon: WHERE HEALTHCARE MEETS THE LAW WRITTEN BY CHELSEA ADAMS
DR. PAUL J. GORDON has one objective in mind for his patients: a return to optimal health. As a chiropractor in Mandeville, Dr. Gordon mainly treats people injured in auto accidents, workplace mishaps or, from time-to-time, sports injuries. In practice since 2001, Dr. Gordon has extensive experience working in the medicallegal arena, which is complex. In addition to treating the patient, he must also maintain meticulous records, formulate professional opinions on the cause of patients’ injuries, and provide his expert opinion to the patient’s Dr. Paul attorney – all while maintaining a trusting bond with the patient. “When seeing patients, I diagnose their injuries and determine if, and how, an accident may have contributed to the said injuries. Then, I must prescribe a treatment,” he said. Dr. Gordon does not believe in “cookie cutter” treatment. Each plan is specifically designed and can involve any number of options including segmental strengthening, ELDOA stretching, deep myofascial stretching, electrical muscle stimulation, joint mobilization, articular pumping, and more. “My intentions are to formulate a plan that takes the patient through all phases of healing and to get the patient back to pre-injury status,” Dr. Gordon said. In the world of personal injury, Dr. Gordon believes that the integration of chiropractic with standard medical care is often necessary. For example, a patient may have inflammation that causes unbearable pain and prevents healing. In such cases, Dr. Gordon will refer the patient to his in-house medical doctor, Dr. Raul Reyes, who will independently evaluate the patient. Dr. Reyes may then prescribe an anti-inflammatory to help reduce the swelling and inflammation. Thereafter, Dr. Gordon can continue working with the patient. 12
Sophisticated Woman | April 2017
In some instances, Dr. Gordon may encounter injuries that require another level of care. He will then refer those patients to specialists. “If a patient presents with a shoulder tear, that would require an orthopedist. So, I will make a recommendation for an orthopedic consult on the shoulder injury, but continue to treat the patient for other injuries,” Dr. Gordon said. When asked about the length of time he sees a personal injury patient, he responded “Some patients heal very quickly; others require a longer healing time. I even have patients who simply want to be evaluated once to make Gordon sure they’re okay following an accident. Every patient is different,” he said. Dr. Gordon is also very passionate about children involved in collisions. “It’s extremely important for children to be evaluated following an accident,” said Dr. Gordon, who has a fellowship in pediatric chiropractic. “Children tend to simply say they are okay, even if symptoms are present. Typically, a restrained child is susceptible to hyperflexion-extension trauma to the neck. If left undiagnosed and untreated, these children could eventually experience fascia problems which can progress into scoliosis,” Dr. Gordon said. THE RIGHT TOOLS Dr. Gordon loves having the latest technology at his disposal, allowing him to diagnose injuries with precision. He uses digital radiology x-rays and flexion-extension studies to rule out trauma beyond sprain/strain injuries. Regardless of the patients’ needs, Dr. Gordon is prepared to give them the best chance at healing. CONTINUALLY IMPROVING Dr. Gordon and his team regularly participate in continuing education to stay abreast of advances in chiropractic and rehabilitation.
“Education never stops,” he said. “There’s always something new to learn and incorporate into my practice, for me and my team. I invest in their continual studies because they are an essential part of my practice,” he said. In fact, his rehabilitation staff are all ELDOAcertified. ELDOA exercises are highly effective in providing relief from pain, arthritis, and neurological conditions. Dr. Gordon’s rehab team includes a certified yoga instructor, a personal trainer, and a wellness coach. “I have full faith and confidence in every member of my team. I couldn’t do this without them,” he said. “By investing in my team and my practice, I get the best results for my patients. I don’t want people just to feel better. I want them to function better too,” he said. Dr. Gordon also makes certain patients are fully invested in their care. “I inform them about my findings, educate them on their injuries, and empower them to work with me on their healing process. This helps build an effective patient-doctor relationship. If a patient does not leave my office a better person than when they came in, I feel like I’ve failed them,” he said. While Dr. Gordon spends most of his time helping patients heal following personal injury accidents, he also enjoys helping professional and collegiate athletes, musicians and people who work in the film industry. “It’s fun,” he said. “It challenges me a bit to think outside the medical-legal world. But, the fundamental standard of care is the same – I will always use the most advanced techniques in chiropractic and rehabilitation to restore strength, balance, and stability to the human body.” Dr. Paul J. Gordon’s practice is based in Integrated Spine & Disc located at 3441 E. Causeway Approach in Mandeville. For more information, please call 985-778-2036. www.drpauljgordon.com.

WRITTEN BY LAURA TOBIN
I HAVE A distinct memory of my grandmother warning me as a little girl about my eyes being bigger than my stomach. The expression mystified me as I went through the cafeteria line with her, ordering one of everything. In my professional life, though, all too often I see businesses with the same tendency—they want to try one of everything in the shiny world of marketing and new media tactics. With an unlimited ad budget and time to devote to implementing it, that works fine. However, I’ve yet to encounter that situation. The problem is that when your marketing efforts are spread too thinly across a host of media options, the advertising is not truly effective in any of them. I routinely counsel clients to find the most effective media outlets to accomplish their objectives, and then own those media. That usually means concentrating on three to four outreach vehicles and maximizing exposure there. Make the biggest splash possible, even if it limits the number of insertions. You’re more likely to have an impact among the people you do reach, even if you limit the size of your audience. It’s all too easy to be overlooked with a small presence in a number of places. In print, most clients benefit more from doing the biggest ad their budget will allow for fewer insertions than a tiny ad in every issue. In broadcast advertising, a schedule with good frequency for a two-month period will yield better results than a couple of spots a week all year long. When you undertake a social media campaign, post consistently to keep momentum going rather than sporadically as the mood strikes. The same goes with digital, outdoor and any other medium. Resist the temptation to over-indulge in media options!

things a bit differently when it comes to senior living. The boutique-style assisted living and memory care community’s goal is to help older adults remain active and engaged while providing assistance when necessary. “You can be as independent as you want to be for as long as you can be,” said Devin Tournillon, Family and Resident Advocate for Avanti Senior Living in Covington. Set to open in May, the 77,000-square foot community has already experienced significant demand for its oneand two-bedroom suites, Tournillon said. Model rooms are fully furnished and ready for tours. The progressive community encompasses lots of features not routinely seen in senior living communities. It’s designed to be more like a resort hotel with amenities that cater to mind, body and strength. “We like to say Avanti offers senior living with attitude,” Tournillon explains. Technology plays a big role. The community offers WIFI, streaming videos and telemedicine so residents can connect with their doctors. Residents are encouraged to stay connected with family and friends through social media and Skype, and a dedicated staff member is on-hand for technology, training and education. The care partners also rely on technology to connect with residents and track their needs. “You’ll never see a medicine cart in this community,” Tournillon said.
A salon offers traditional hair and nail services as well as spa-like amenities such as therapeutic massage, aromatherapy and relaxation therapy. A full-time wellness instructor teaches barre, yoga and other fitness classes to enhance residents’ balance, flexibility and strength. On-demand meals are available in Avanti’s appropriately dubbed “Taste Restaurant,” and there are other dining venues as well. Avanti offers assisted living suites as well as specialized memory care suites, called Salize, for residents with dementia-related disorders. The decor and design of the community are consistent throughout so there’s no contrast between the assisted living suites and memory care. Residents’ monthly fees include three daily meals, housekeeping, laundry and Avanti amenities including programing and wellness. Assistance with activities of daily living is provided a la carte so residents don’t pay for levels of care they don’t need. The fresh approach to senior living is the brainchild of Lori Alford, a Denham Springs native and Tim Hekker. Together they have over 50 years serving seniors. Avanti is a Houston-based company with three additional communities in Texas and soon to be in Arizona. Avanti Senior Living of Covington is located off Highway 21 and Ochsner Blvd. For tours and more information, call Devin Tournillon at 985-222-9747.

A Gateway Overlay Project implementation vision workshop was held March 9 at Koop Drive Council Chambers. Hosted by St. Tammany Parish Government and Design Workshop project facilitators, the workshop gave the public an opportunity to review designs and offer input for each of six Economic Development Districts along Interstate 12 interchanges in the parish. “The vision for each of these districts is to underscore the distinctive identities of each of these communities, and to entice the visitor, or the resident driving by to come into that community,” said St. Tammany Parish President Pat Brister. The project intends to create green space and set design standards to enhance future business development. At the culmination of this process, the Parish hopes to have identified specific projects and put development standards in place to create a vibrant destination with a mix of existing establishments and new businesses. Enterprising Woman THE LAW OF MOTION
—LEGAL SERVICES MEET CHANGING NEEDS WRITTEN BY JILL WILLIE PHOTOS BY STEVE RANDON
MICHELLE DEMAREST SUNSERI was a young lawyer when she moved both her family and her practice to the Northshore --- years ago. Adapting to the needs of the community during that time, Michelle transitioned from the commercial and corporate law in which she had been trained into the area of family law. Now a highly recognized family law attorney with special training in mediation and collaborative law, Michelle is expanding her practice to more comprehensively address the legal needs of today. This summer, Michelle will begin working with husband and fellow attorney J. Douglas “Doug” Sunseri and merge her practice with the law firm of Nicaud and Sunseri. In opening and managing the firm’s Northshore office, Michelle will have the unique ability to fully address the diverse legal needs of St. Tammany Parish residents and business owners in several different dimensions. “The Northshore is a different place than it was 20 years ago. The make up of our business community has changed. Our population has grown and become more dynamic as well. Clients today have more complicated legal needs, yet they have less time to understand them,” Michelle said. “I take the time to listen to their needs, identify the most appropriate channels and navigate them to achieve a swift resolution.” Michelle has an innate ability to translate complex legal concepts in a way that is easy for a lay person to understand. In addition to serving as a legal analyst on the “Think Tank” with Garland Robinette, she frequently co-hosts “All Things Legal” with her husband on Sunday mornings (both on WWL-AM/FM). While Michelle and Doug had long hoped to one day merge their practices, the timing was not right until now. A blended family, they’ve focused on rearing their five children rather than spending time and 22

resources into transitioning their firms. Now that their youngest is a sophomore in high school, they have decided to take the plunge. “After four years of marriage, we are finally moving in together,” Michelle said. “Just as we complement each other as spouses and parents, we complement each other as attorneys. It is a partnership that not only benefits our clients, it is a great opportunity for our family as well.” Explaining that they walk the walk of a blended family, Michelle’s personal experiences enable her to bring a unique perspective to her clients. As a young widow with two young girls, she knows what it is like having to maneuver through the legal system, dealing with succession and related estate issues, while also grieving the loss of a loved one. She’s endured the stress of being a single parent. She’s faced the challenges that come with blending two families. Michelle’s compassion for her clients is heartfelt, and her commitment to achieving their legal goals is unwavering. With the aim to provide counsel throughout all phases of life—both personally and professionally—Michelle covers the full spectrum of family law concerns. She helps her clients establish fair, mutually acceptable child custody arrangements and addresses pivotal, and often complex, financial matters such as spousal support and marital property division. Recognizing that many roadblocks to resolution stemmed from dysfunctional communications,
she pursued extensive training in mediation as well as collaborative law in order to help couples and families find the most effective, cost-efficient paths to resolution of their disputes. Michelle is a volunteer with the 22nd Judicial District Court’s Conflicts and Resolution Parenting Program. She teaches communication techniques and co-parenting skills to divorcing parents during an 8-week, court-mandated program. “The real beneficiaries of the program are the children. Children thrive when they see their parents working together, even if they are no longer living together,” she said. “With the appropriate skills and tools in place, you can help protect the ones you love, for today and for tomorrow,” she continued. “Estate planning is a critical component of the equation. Some people don’t realize that having a will may not be enough to ensure your plans are executed. Issues such as living wills, powers of attorney, property transfers and trusts—especially those that provide for care of children or disabled persons—should be considered.” Concerns over elder care are becoming more prelevant as the population ages. “There are a multitude of concerns that come with aging parents. Some of my clients need help accessing benefits to provide in-home care for their parents. There may be additional benefits they may not even be aware of that I can bring to their attention. Medicare eligibility planning and transfers of property are important components to accessing benefits when the need arises,” Michelle said. “There is also concern over elder abuse, from preventing abuse to pursuing legal recourse if abuse is suspected.” While Michelle maintains her passion for family law, she is excited about the opportunity to return to her roots in the corporate arena. “We are well positioned to meet diverse business needs. We are equipped to handle Fortune 500 companies that may need to retain counsel or smaller businesses that periodically seek guidance for employment, insurance or liability
issues. We can negotiate, execute and dispute contracts for individual professionals or assist start-up companies with establishing LLCs, LLPs or corporations. The fact that I am able to do this in partnership with a legal professional I admire, respect and love makes it an even greater blessing,” she said. “One of the greatest lessons Doug has taught me is that things may not end up looking like I think they will, but they will fall into place according to God’s plan. I am both confident and grateful for the opportunity the Lord has given to begin this new chapter in our professional lives.” Michelle R. A PLACE
of
COMFORT
WRITTEN BY CASEY PERRIN ROBERT PHOTOS BY TIM DUNFORD
AS YOU STEP
onto the porch of Brian and Kristy Ball’s home in Tchefuncta Club Estates, the transition begins. The painted porch floor of the contemporary Acadian house echoes the feel of a quiet country retreat as the swing on the end moves slowly in the breeze. When the elegantly proportioned front doors open, a feeling of the old world comes upon you.

Biscuit, the petite watchdog of the family, looks over from her perch atop a linen sofa as you enter her space. Instantly, it becomes obvious that you are in a place that is loved. The couple, who were residents of the same neighborhood before building this new home, are completely comfortable in their new abode. That is not a surprise, considering the careful planning that went into the project before construction even began. Architect James Chauvin and designer Cindy St. Romain get lavish praise from Kristy, as do builder Brad Gerken and landscape designer Brian Humphreys. “The design team was so amazing,” she says. “We planned everything in detail before we started building.” And it shows. Above all other aspects of the home, the one detail that has impacted the house the most was actually a happy accident. The lot the home is built on is in a naturally lower part of the neighborhood, and they had to raise the level of the slab quite a bit before building. In doing so, they have given themselves a gift that never ends: a priceless view. Their view of the marshlands is from a slightly higher elevation than most neighbors have. “We’re out here every day for sunsets,” says Brian. The sheltered back patio, wrapped in Old Chicago bricks, features a spacious chef-level outdoor kitchen, a fireplace and a roomy entertaining area. Adding natural mosquito repellant plants around the patio area keeps everyone comfortable in warm months, and having curtains that can be pulled against the chill of winter winds provides a cozy spot during colder times. The view of the marsh is a focal point from interior Continued on page 27

from page 25 rooms as well. The open floor plan is masterfully executed, with wide-plank oak floors and a palette of cool whites throughout. The kitchen design is particularly seamless, featuring an oversized White Rhino marble island and integrated appliances, including a built-in steamer and coffeemaker. The stove is centered on the island, a purposeful choice that avid cook Brian made early in the design process. “This way, I can be part of the conversation when I’m cooking. I’m not isolated in a corner while everyone else is having fun.” The open dining room is another design choice that makes for better entertaining. A built-in wine fridge is tucked beneath a counter accented by a white Ann Sacks tile, and all the necessary things for entertaining are kept at easy reach in the cabinets. A pair of 19th century French Verdi plaster planters sit on either side of the window, quietly warming up the space with
their textured surfaces and leafy contents. The couple, who have three teenage children and three dogs, integrated multiple modern features into the home while keeping the focus on the beautifully curated collection of European antiques, most of which came from Cindy’s retail store, St. Romain Interiors in Madisonville. Features such as a four-zone sound system and an attic lift blend seamlessly into the background, allowing the beauty of the furnishings and accents to stand out. A whole-home generator provides peace of mind for power outages, and a one-story floor plan with generous doorway sizes allows for aging in place. Even the seemingly simple addition of an extra entryway adds to the functionality of the house for the family. Kristy mentions a quote she read years ago that inspired her to plan his-and-hers master bathrooms; it is about being equal in
everything, but not necessarily sharing all your things. His side is simple, while hers is simply fabulous. “It keeps the romance alive,” she says. “I can walk out of my bathroom totally ready for date night, and it’s like a real date!” The closets throughout the house were planned so that none of the bedrooms required extra furniture in them, adding to the crispness of the overall look. In the master suite, a few special touches make the space feel truly luxurious for the homeowners, who intend for this to be the last home they build. At one time, they considered buying another property elsewhere, and now, says Kristy, she doesn’t have to worry about moving again. “In the mornings, I sit on the front porch a lot. In the evenings, we sit on the back patio. My office is here, and I spend most of my time in it. There is always some place to go here to get comfortable.”

Drive WRITTEN BY DR. MARY SPEED
I DON’T QUITE know how to capture the word to express what it is that I look for in a potential employee. It’s the spark in the person that you know is going to give you trouble, yet is the essential feature of why you instantly know this is the person to hire. They are not mini-mes, but have their own minds, express opinions, consider options and are committed visionaries. Fortunately, I have gotten to work with a wonderful mix of people who are capable and passionate about what they do. The substance they bring to the workplace is expressed in confidence, problem-solving, accountability and humility. They are going somewhere, not taking a meandering stroll but on a mission. They are in for the long-term and actively look for training and mentoring toward bettering mission outcomes. Drive might be a good word for this ambition. The “trouble” is that they actively address what needs to be addressed and say what ought not to be ignored. They will let the emperor know when he is naked. [The Emperor’s New Clothes, a translation of Hans Christian Andersen’s Keiserens Nye Klæder by Jean Hersholt, www.andersen.sdu.dk/vaerk/ hersholt/TheEmperorsNewClothes_e.html] Tending to what is true can be troublesome, but it is necessary for growth. Drive is not unique to the workplace but an essential oil, too, in committed thriving, vital relationships. Confidence allows for believing that problems have solutions and frees one to be accountable for wrong doing. Humility opens the way to correction and redirection. Marriage and family life can be more than a gathering of people under one roof. Individual growth or decline may be the progress or peril of the family. The health of the family can be measured in how differences of opinion are received or rejected. It is okay to disagree about the paths to your mutual destination. Vive la difference! 34

Happy with your hair?
Coming in May: Northshore Salons and Spas
HAVE YOU HEARD
the saying “A woman’s hair is her glory”? If not, trust us—a full head of hair can make both men and women feel proud, especially later in life when thick and shiny hair is not as common. What happens to us? Why do color, shimmer and, most frighteningly, fullness leave our hair limp and dull or simply absent? There are many reasons and, fortunately, many solutions. The number of treatment options is multiplying as hair-loss therapy becomes increasingly popular.
The most important step is to choose the right treatment for your hair depending on the underlying cause. For starters, hair is an extension of our body (no pun intended) and reflects our overall health and wellness. As we go through life, wear and tear on our bodies contributes to poorer nutrient absorption, slower detoxification and various imbalances often related to hormonal shifts. We have seen great success with Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy for hair loss or thinning. It typically produces results in 8–10 weeks— one of the fastest treatments on the market— and can replace sticky sprays, gels and foams. A safe, non-surgical treatment performed in the doctor’s office, PRP therapy involves using the patient’s own blood, sometimes with the addition of ACell (FDA-approved treatment aimed at cellular regeneration), which is injected into the scalp. The procedure takes about 90 minutes. The essential proteins contained in the blood stimulate natural hair growth. Patients enjoy increased thickness, fullness and shine in a matter of weeks. Hair transplantation is getting more sophisticated and is now used for brows, beards and other areas that have no hair follicles remaining and need to be filled.

Kindergarten and first grade students in Mrs. Walker’s gifted class recently studied Mardi Gras around the world, learning about different traditions, customs and unique occurrences as they compared and contrasted these fun elements. Students learned the origin of Mardi Gras from France, Rio, Mobile, New Orleans and South Louisiana. Students created their own Mardi Gras screen masks, similar to those found at Courir de Mardi Gras in Southwest Louisiana. Senior Reagan Hill, son of Keith and Kimberly Hill of Mandeville, is one of nine students selected as a recipient of the 2017 Louisiana Young Heroes Awards. Now in its 22nd year, the program celebrates the achievements of students who have inspired those around them, and have devoted their time, talents and energy to making their schools, churches or communities better places. Reagan survived a horrible diving accident when he was 14 that left him paralyzed initially. Because of his amazing attitude, strength and perseverance, he was able to walk out of the hospital just six weeks later. Reagan’s accident spurred him to found “Reagan’s Peanut Butter Project” that has raised over $12,000 and assisted more than 900 individuals who have suffered injuries or are dealing with cancer in a three-state region. Reagan has been involved in volunteer work for a number of years, helping the Covington Food Bank, Habitat for Humanity, Children’s Advocacy Center and other organizations. He is also an honor student with a 4.02 grade point average. The winners and their families will be honored on April 3 with a luncheon at the Governor’s Mansion.
White distilled vinegar. A top choice, it’s often referred to as the “queen of green clean!” An incredibly effective cleaner, this product kills about 90 percent of household germs. Rodale News compares vinegar with bleach: “[Vinegar] is probably strong enough to handle most germy tasks, and when it doesn’t work, resort to hot soapy water”. Lemon Juice: It’s shown to cut grease, remove stains, brighten laundry, clean surfaces (including tile grout) and neutralize odors. And don’t forget, grind half a lemon in your kitchen sink disposal to deodorize it. Pure essential oils: Extracted from plants, these oils are powerful, containing the strongest antimicrobial properties. Try thyme, mint, cinnamon, salvia and clove. Baking Soda: An effective odor neutralizer and scrub, use it to clean bathtubs, tiles and sinks. Sprinkle, and use a damp sponge to scrub. Voila! Your bathroom is sparkling clean. Chalk Paint is a type of paint (actually, it’s a trademarked brand of paint by Annie Sloan, but other companies have similar paints also) that can be used on furniture and other items to create a chalky appearance. It’s used for creating an aged appearance, and can be distressed easily.
