behind the scenes
On the morning of the cover photo shoot, we met up with our Enterprising Woman Rebecca Bradford at Air Blow Dry Bar & Salon where Christina Viers styled her hair and Caitlin Galan applied her makeup. While she was getting glammed up, we asked her a few questions to get to know a different side of the boutique owner. SW: What did you eat for breakfast this morning? RB: If I am being honest…a protein bar and a diet coke. I know, breakfast of champions. SW: What were you doing before you arrived for hair and makeup? RB: It’s the holiday season, so of course I was at the store working! That is going to be 24/7 until about 4 P.M. on Christmas Eve.

WHEN I WAS
growing up in England, at Christmastime all the boarders in my parents’ boarding school would go home for the holidays. During this time, we had the run of the house and would take over the large dining room that sat about seventy people and the entrance hall. We would decorate the largest Christmas tree that would fit and this is where our Christmas festivities took place. My five siblings and I, along with friends, would plan and perform a play on Christmas Eve to entertain our parents and family friends. We would rehearse for days, build sets and make costumes. I wish we had had the technology we have today back then, as I would love to see them. After the play and dinner we would bundle up and head to church for midnight mass. I still to this day love singing Christmas carols and am amazed that I remember the words to most of them. My father would wait up for us and hurry us to bed so that Father Christmas could come and leave our presents. I have my treasured memories. To me Christmas is more than gifts, it’s a time spend time with loved ones to cherish the memories that we make every day. Even as most of my family lives in England, we like to make the holidays a memorable time. Christmas is a time to celebrate one’s faith, to remember the reason for the holiday, to spend time with our loved ones and remember those who are less fortunate than we are. In this issue, we meet Rebecca Bradford who shares her memories of Christmas and the evolution of her store, Simply Southern, that reflects her aesthetic and personality. We also asked our Enterprising Women (and Man) of 2015 to share their favorite holiday memories. Wishing our readers Happy Holidays and a Happy and Healthy New Year,

Merry WRITTEN BY DR. MARY W. SPEED
LIGHTHEARTED FOR A DAY,
that is what I wish for you. The absence of worry for a matter of hours, a time to allow yourself to enter into pleasure. I don’t know the last time that you may have given yourself that gift. I extend this invitation to you now, 24 hours of merry. You might use the 24 hours one day at a time or divide the time into half hours and have 48 days of 30-minute periods of not letting anything get to you. That is it, I think with the people I see in session, things get to them. Let’s enter into a quest this blessed, holiday season to look for glimmers of merriment. I’ll confess, I have already started, here are a few things that I have seen so far: I saw a coworker doubled over in laughter. I don’t know what it was about, but I found happiness right there, in the work place. I saw my grandson, Jet, carry a bouquet of flowers through the airport to welcome his Mommy home. I heard a radio announcer stumble with the name of a song and laugh about his pronunciation. We have heard much in the past year from Frozen to “Let it go.” Mental health thrives too in not making much of little. Your heart may have more that a 24-hour period to be merry. It really is okay that your capacity to be merry be misinterpreted. A baby born long ago suffered misunderstanding his whole life, yet believers know his capacity to turn things upside down, making little of much and making much of little. Let your heart be light.

South Paws A Friend to the Animals WRITTEN BY SARAH HERNDON PHOTO BY LAINEY REED
IT’S NOT OFTEN
that you can work every day with one of your best friends, but Robert “Bob” Hancock, DVM, owner of South Paws Veterinary Surgical Specialists in Mandeville, is doing just that with the addition of Dr. Dena Lodato to his practice. Dr. Bob was first introduced to her when he supervised her surgical internship in 2010 and witnessed first-hand not only her savvy as a surgeon but her compassion for the animals and their owners. Dr. Bob knew exactly who he should hire when the time came to expand his surgery services. “Dr. Dena practices with the same philosophies as we do—those that make us different and make us stand out from everyone else,” says Dr. Bob. Like Dr. Bob, Dr. Dena is a board-certified small animal surgeon. Her interest in animal medicine began at a very young age when, as a six-year-old, she performed surgeries on her beloved Pound Puppies. “They had bandages all over them,” she recalls. This affinity stuck with her through the years, but she was unsure if she could administer shots to live animals. Dr. Dena settled on being a groomer, but then decided that she wanted to “do more than just make them look pretty” and pursued veterinary school.
Leaving her home in New Jersey and venturing south, Dr. Dena graduated from the Mississippi State College of Veterinary Medicine in 2008. She then moved to Baton Rouge and completed an internship at LSU. After her year in Baton Rouge, she was awarded a highly competitive residency back at MSU in small animal surgery and then worked at a specialty and emergency clinic in Jackson, MS until recently. Now a Northshore resident, Dr. Dena is looking forward to her time at South Paws where she will be able to apply her background in soft tissue and orthopedic surgery. Dr. Dena is not afraid of a challenge—in fact, she prefers one. “I like a case that is not straight-forward. I look at it like an adventure and am able to keep a positive attitude,” she says. Dr. Dena has a wonderful bedside manner, and is always lively and engaging with her clients. “Her commitment to patient care and client service make her a perfect fit for South Paws,” comments Dr. Bob. “Our referring
veterinary community has come to expect a certain level of service when it comes to specialized veterinary care, and Dr. Dena will meet and exceed those expectations. We are thrilled to add a surgeon of her caliber to our team.” Dr. Dena is excited to be at South Paws as well, and is looking forward to working with the staff. “I will be doing what I like to do with good people. There will be stressful times but I know that we will all be on the same page,” says Dr. Dena. While her work schedule stays demanding, Dr. Dena does find time for kickboxing and horseback riding. However, sitting by the lakefront with her fiancé and their dogs Gabby and Catfish, is one of her most favorite ways to unwind. This fits perfectly with her goal as a veterinarian—to improve the quality of life for people and their pets. South Paws Veterinary Surgical Specialists is located at 2631 N. Causeway Blvd. in Mandeville. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call 985-809-1590 or visit southpawsvet.com. Sophisticated Woman | December 2015 7

health Downsizing With SculpSure™ OFTEN OUR IMAGINATIONS are filled with “what if” and “if only,” but every so often, fantasy becomes reality. What if excessive fat deposits could be melted away by a 25-minute treatment with no needles, no suction, no compression garments and no recovery time? The reality of such a treatment is now here with the first FDA-approved non-invasive fat reduction laser treatment called SculpSure™ which permanently eliminates on average 24 percent of subcutaneous treated fat.
Now the menu is complete for permanent removal of excess fat. SculpSure™ uses a specific wavelength of laser energy, which safely bypasses the skin to permanently kill fat cells underneath with little or no discomfort. A belt is fastened around the waist with up to four pads positioned over the treatment areas. The patient then lies down for just 25 minutes while listening to music or watching TV. Afterwards, the patient walks out without a compression garment, no pain and no restrictions. Results are evident in 8-12 weeks. Never before have we had such a quick, userfriendly, non-invasive method to permanently dissolve targeted areas of unwanted fat. Until SculpSure™, a popular method for non-invasive fat reduction was by cryolipoysis. This freezing method hardened fat into “sticks of butter” that required kneading, elicited inflammation, often created post-treatment pain, and took up to four times as long as one SculpSure™ treatment. Now the menu is complete for permanent removal of excess fat. Kybella™ dissolves double-chin fat by injections. SmartLipo™ is still the gold standard for removal and tightening of larger areas and multiple locations, and now Sculpsure™ non-invasively removes fat in the abdomen as well as love handles, arms, thighs, and flanks. “What if” has now become reality thanks to advanced body sculpting technologies. What Happens When You Get Sick WHEN YOU DEVELOP
an illness that does not go away on its own or worsens with time, you should contact your friendly primary care provider (PCP) for a proper and thorough evaluation in his/her office to see what is making you ill. A medical evaluation may lead to an answer to your problem(s) and hopefully, your situation is remedied on the way home. However, if your condition is deemed unsafe to treat at home, then you will be sent to a local hospital where you will be closely monitored and likely multiple tests will be ordered and IV medications given. With treatment, you recover before going home unscathed. If you’re still not well, a specialist may be called in, medications adjusted and more testing may be done. A few days later, if your condition is better but not well enough to go home, then you may be sent to what we call nowadays a Skills Unit (SNF) where you will get some rehabilitation prior to going home. At home, you may receive Home Health services, which will provide nursing, physical and occupational, and nurses aide assistance to fit

legal Co-Owned Accounts A COMMON QUESTION
Written by Ronda M. Gabb
our clients ask is, “Should I add my child(ren)’s name to my bank account(s)?” The answer is, “it depends.” Once you know all the ramifications of doing so, then you decide. It makes sense why you may want to do this: to allow your child to have instantaneous access to your account(s) without having to go through any cumbersome legal channels. Your child may access the proceeds not only while you are alive (and perhaps incompetent) but also upon your death as the account would not be “frozen” as long as there is another “co-owner”. Sounds great right? Well…maybe. A co-owner may access all of the funds at any time, without the permission of the other co-owner. Most of you will say that you trust your child implicitly and the foregoing is not a concern. However, can you guarantee that your child will not: 1) predecease you and their heirs try to claim those proceeds under your child’s estate; 2) get divorced and a disgruntled spouse tries to claim a part of those funds in the divorce; 3) file bankruptcy; 4) cause some type of accident and be sued; or 5) become ill and need to qualify for Medicaid and those assets will now disqualify them?
Your Everyday Getaway
Do you still think it is a good idea? If the above causes you concern, and it should, think about a few options. Add your child to only one account that doesn’t keep a very large account balance and you can always transfer over more funds from another account. Be sure you have an excellent financial power of attorney (POA) in place and be sure to keep them “updated” (we generally recommend executing new POAs every five years). If you fall ill, your child can then access your accounts through your POA and now your assets are not at risk from your child’s estate, spouse, or creditors. Ask your bank if they allow “Payable on Death” (POD) beneficiary designations (most do) and name your children to receive those funds upon your death without having that account frozen until a Succession is opened. All that is needed to claim the funds is your death certificate. Ronda M. EVERGREENS HAVE long been part of our southern holiday decorating schemes. Long before the Christmas tree became a popular tradition in the newborn Americas, people of other cultures and time periods used evergreen boughs as a reminder that the brown earth would soon be green and growing again. Doorways and living areas were adorned with the native evergreens beckoning the weak sun to become strong again. We can still identify with this today and mourn that 5 p.m. darkness! Luckily, we understand seasonal change and know that we are only three months away from the return of longer days and more green in our gardens. Today, southerners still enjoy using our native evergreens to celebrate the season and bring a little nature into our homes. We all tend to think of pine, spruce, cedar and fir as our traditional holiday evergreens, but let us not forget our beautiful Southern Magnolia. The tree is named magnolia to commemorate Pierre Magnol, a professor of botany and medicine in Montpellier, France in the early 18th century. We are blessed to be home to the Magnolia Grandiflora or Southern Magnolia. This magnolia is both the state flower and state tree of Mississippi. It is also the state flower of Louisiana. Magnolias are the oldest flowering plants of the world and magnolia fossils have been
found in rocks over 40 million years old. Magnolia flowers are pollinated by beetles because magnolias evolved before bees and other flying pollinators. The flowers attract beetles with fragrant, sugary secretions. Our Southern Magnolia is indeed an evergreen, although it does shed leaves as it replaces the old leaves with new ones. Speaking of the leaves, they make beautiful decorations for wreaths and holiday tables. Don’t forget the seed pods. They look beautiful when sprayed with a little gold to add glam to any arrangement. A magnolia tree will add that wonderful touch of green to any winter landscape and provide shade to a garden as well. If you choose the Magnolia Grandiflora for your landscape, be sure to leave plenty of growing room. This large blossomed tree can grow as tall as 100 feet and have a bottom spread of 20-30 feet. When young, magnolias tend to grow in a conical shape and then spread out as they age. The Magnolia Grandiflora symbolizes endurance and long life and who doesn’t need a boost of that during the holiday season? This holiday season, go native and make the natural beauty in your own backyard a special part of your holiday tradition. Email your gardening questions and comments to Lisa at shakeslyons@aol.com.

Venous Disease: Sometimes Not Obvious! VENOUS DISEASE is very common. It afflicts roughly 50 percent of adults by the time they reach the age of 50. In the US, that accounts for approximately 80 million people. If left untreated it can lead to serious medical problems such as blood clot formation in the legs as well as skin discoloration, skin breakdown and chronic ulcer formation. The vein problem we’re talking about is something we call venous insufficiency, which just means that the veins are not bringing blood back up from the lower leg adequately. Almost all patients with varicose veins have venous insufficiency and many with spider veins alone also have this. These are the easy ones to identify. There are many more individuals who have venous insufficiency where it’s not as obvious. It’s important to recognize the tell tale signs since often they come on very slowly and they’re easy to ignore and often they are chalked up to “just getting old.” 1. Do your legs feel tired and fatigued at the end of the day? This is one of the most reliable symptoms indicating venous disease. 2. Do you feel like you need to elevate you legs when you come home at the end of the day? 3. Does moving your feet and/or legs while sitting, help your legs feel more comfortable? Commonly referred to as Restless Leg Syndrome. 4. Did you have more than the usual amount of swelling in the legs during pregnancy? 5. Do you have one or more immediate family members who have some form of
venous disease? 6. Do you have swelling in your legs that worsens during the day and goes away with elevation or while sleeping over night? 7. Do you have itching or tingling of the lower legs? 8. Do you have redness or a brownish discoloration of the skin around the ankles? 9. Do you have leg cramping during the night or day? 10. Does it take an extended period of time for small nicks or lacerations to heal in the area of the ankles or do you have frank ulceration? Any of these may indicate the presence of venous insufficiency and would warrant evaluation. If you have further questions please refer to our website at labellavitavein.com and click on “Virtual Vein Screening.” Additional information can also be found at phlebology.org which is the website of the American College of Phlebology, the primary society of physicians that specialize in the treatment of vein disease.

SOMETHING OLD, SOMETHING NEW WRITTEN BY JAN ROBERT
MY NORTHSHORE COUSINS and I rotate the Christmas Eve family celebration each year. This year it is my turn. My mind is swirling, already making list upon list, paging through worn cookbooks for the old, tried and true, traditional family recipes and perusing food blogs for bright new ideas. I begin preparing shopping, cooking and baking schedules, and gathering decorating ideas. The menu is of course my main concern, but I am also absorbed in setting a festive holiday atmosphere from the moment my guests arrive. Luminaries to line the walkway, a fresh green wreath for the front door, poinsettias, magnolia leaves in abundance, and stockings hung from the chimney with care. I almost forgot the Christmas tree! If everything is in its place, all things will flow smoothly. Right? Mise en place is a French culinary phrase that literally translates to “put in place.” It’s a Zen like practice that keeps me grounded during the frenetic holiday season. Clear the space, clear the mind. Should we call this mindfulness for the kitchen? You don’t want any surprises when 30 people arrive simultaneously for the Christmas celebration. Gift wrap and ribbon is flying, kids are hungry and screaming for food, and the cocktails and wine are flowing freely and no one but you seems to know what is supposed to happen next. Is this insanity? No, it is the holiday season so let us rejoice. We love it, right? My cousins and I lovingly describe the season as, “FFF,” forced family fun. Once Thanksgiving has passed, and the turkey carcass has passed into its next life as a gumbo, there is barely time to blink before the Christmas season steamrolls in and is hovering over our shoulder. Where do you go to find that elusive peace on earth and comfort and joy? I seek and find my comfort in the kitchen and in the preparation of 16 Sophisticated Woman | December 2015
our family food traditions. Somehow, the sameness and predictability of sharing these rituals creates calm. I am thinking of something old, warming to eat and filled with memories from Christmas past. Quit counting calories now, it’s time to celebrate the holidays! For the 12 days of Christmas, Foodies and Friends will share 12 recipes for fun appetizers that are old, handed down from generation to generation and steeped in family tradition as well as a few of my favorite new recipes. Let’s see, it really isn’t Christmas without cousin Tish Hellmuth Casey’s deviled eggs. Check that off the list. I will ask Lisa Hellmuth Zenor to make her popular sausage wonton wraps. I love Mom’s old-fashioned olive surprises. Retro cooking at its best! I can always count on Lizby and Randy Eustis to deliver their decadent pack-a-punch Christmas milk punch. My niece Emily shares a family recipe from her Grandma Foley for the sweetest, flakiest little bite sized pecan pies. I know the family expects me to make either shrimp remoulade or chicken liver mousse. And of course, the French Yule log cake or buche de noel. Let’s hope for a touch of cold and a few crisp clear nights, with hundreds of twinkling stars in the sky to really inspire us to get in the kitchen and cook, find peace, and discover the joys of the holiday season. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Don’t forget to check the Foodies and Friends blog each week for the 12 days of Christmas old and new recipe surprises. Go online to share your favorite family traditions and recipes with Foodies too! For more recipes and blog posts from Jan, please visit SophisticatedWoman. com/foodies-friends.
Stuffed or Deviled Eggs MY COUSIN,
Tish Hellmuth Casey will be remembered for many things. One of her specialties, which is expected at all family events from Saints games, to birthdays, to holiday extravaganzas are her stuffed eggs. Here they are! Ingredients: Hard-boiled eggs Finely chopped green onions Salt and Pepper Mayonnaise Directions: Slice eggs in half lengthwise, taking yokes out. In a bowl, mash yolks and combine with green onions, salt and pepper. Add mayonnaise to taste. Stuff the egg halves with the mixture. It looks pretty if you use a pastry bag to pipe the filling in. Another easy and mess-free way to “mash your egg yolks is to combine these ingredients large plastic bag, and then snip the end of the bag to pipe. They are so easy to make, and make a great impression! Measurements are all based on taste and can be scaled according to the number of eggs.

Rebecca Bradford ENTERPRISING WOMAN True Southern Hospitality WRITTEN BY JILL WILLIE PHOTOS BY STEVE RANDON
THE WONDER of the Christmas season is most often reserved for children. It is something most of us outgrow as we get caught up in managing lists, coordinating holiday visits, decorating and wrapping. Every now and then you find a special someone who embodies the joy of Christmas—not just during the holidays but all the year through. Rebecca Bradford is one of them. As owner of Simply Southern in Covington, Rebecca has created a delightful boutique specializing in regional artwork, décor and gifts. As the shop enters its fifth holiday season, Rebecca explains that the foundation for Simply Southern began when she was a young child. Her lifelong experiences with her Catholic faith and her family, coupled with her creative mindset and passion for her hometown, are evident in every aspect of the business—not simply what is displayed on the shelves. The youngest of five children, Rebecca grew up near St. Joseph Abbey in Covington. She recalls having monks, neighbors and friends in the kitchen for visits and family meals. “We never knew who was going to pop in. My mom was always ready for company. She stocked our pantry with ingredients that enabled her to put together something special at a moment’s notice,” she said. “I try to emulate that same sense of hospitality at the store. It is more than simply welcoming our customers. We provide that ‘special something’ for people looking for gifts or pieces to decorate their homes.” Rebecca cultivated her creative side from an early age. While she may not have always referred to herself as an artist, she displayed a talent—and a passion—that are the definition of artistry. It was pure serendipity that propelled her into opening Simply Southern. And of course, it began with Christmas. In the winter of 2009, Rebecca wanted a way to commemorate the exceptional Saints season so she made ornaments for friends and family. A few weeks later, while her beloved team was creating its destiny as Super Bowl champions, Rebecca began creating her own destiny as a successful business owner. 22 Sophisticated Woman | December 2015
“We are the ultimate ‘shop local’ experience.” has sold more than 12,000 bars of Monk Soap, handcrafted by Brother Andrew and the monks of St. Joseph Abbey. Since opening the store in October 2011, Rebecca has used feedback from her customers to work with artists on special pieces and offerings. She said having the pulse of the community helps on both sides of the counter. Artists can tailor some of their pieces, or even expand their product lines based on what customers are looking for. The store’s assortment of hand-made ornaments is a great example of that collaboration. “We’ve had such a great response to our ornaments that some artists have begun their own collections. Ornaments are like jewels on
RIGHT: Rebecca makes a gingerbread house with her nephew and godson, Matthew Weldon. BELOW: Rebecca organizes merchandise with store manager and jewelry designer, Callie Keiffer. With the help of her parents, Jim and Dayle Bradford, and her brother Jim and sister-in-law Charlotte, Rebecca put together the concept for Simply Southern. Using the name she and her sister Julie had originally wanted to use for bringing their mother’s pralines to the marketplace, they envisioned a forum for local artists and artisans to sell their wares. In preparation for opening the store, Rebecca took a leap of faith and quit her job. She traveled the Southeast United States attending craft fairs and festivals, visiting artist guilds and consignment shops. Along the way, she learned about the people behind their artwork. Being able to share artists’ stories, as well as their talents, was an unexpected blessing. “I work with a variety of artists—some of them are mom and pop businesses, some are full-time painters and craftspeople. We have retirees supplementing their incomes and young artists trying to cultivate a following. By showcasing such a variety of artists and media, we’ve been able to put together an eclectic array that offers something for everyone,” she said. While Simply Southern does feature artists from across the South, the majority of the pieces are made within a 60-mile radius. “We are the ultimate ‘shop local’ experience,” Rebecca explained. For instance, the store
a Christmas tree. Their beauty comes not only from their designs, but from the memories that are associated with them.” Noting that everything is better with twinkle lights, Rebecca said that once the garland is up, the store takes on a magical quality. Customers come in and their sense of wonder and merriment is restored. “We offer an escape from the hectic pace of the outside world and make the gift giving experience fun again,” she said. “It’s more than checking items off a list, it’s about connecting gifts with recipients. To top it off, we take care of the gift-wrapping, regardless of the price point. We give as much attention to the gift packaging as to the gift itself.” And mom’s famous pralines? Even they make an appearance over the holidays, giving customers a sweet treat while they are shopping. A devoted aunt to 11 nieces and nephews, Rebecca said Christmas is taking on special
significance now that the older ones have gone on to college. Adding to the gift packages she mails to them throughout the year, Rebecca has included a new tradition for the holidays where she makes a medley of their favorite dishes. “The holidays are a wonderful time for honoring traditions, enjoying family and making memories,” she explained. “But honoring those things throughout the year is what it is all about. It’s what makes me a simply Southern girl, and it’s what marks the store as Simply Southern. Simply Southern is located at 70448 Hwy. 21 in Covington. For more information, you can call the store at 985-871-1466 or visit their website, simplysouthern.com.

“My Favorite Holiday Tradition is baking a ton of different cookies (now they are gluten free) and then heading over to Celebration in The Oaks with my family while we drink warm drinks and enjoy the lights. There is always so much joy that comes with Christmas!” —Candice L. Knight, M.D. January
“My favorite holiday tradition would be going to the midnight candlelight service on Christmas Eve with my whole family. We went every year together and the last song we sing is Silent Night as we light all the candles.” —Raynah Cullen April
Holiday Memories & Traditions
“My favorite holiday tradition comes right after Thanksgiving. All of our family sets aside life’s busy schedule for a little while to gather together and head to Tiger Branch to pick out the perfect tree. It warms my heart to see the children and grandchildren chatting happily, laughing and wandering around from tree to tree. The fun continues as we drink eggnog while decorating the tree and house for the holidays.” —Kathy Lowrey May
“My favorite holiday memory is during Christmas 1976, Celeste and I formalized our love when she accepted my fraternity necklace. Our long-standing tradition, since my birthday is Dec. 26, is if you wrap a birthday gift in red or green, you place it under the tree or add Santa or reindeer to the cake, it won’t be opened or eaten. To be forever banished to the naughty list: give a combined Christmas-birthday gift.” —Reid Falconer June
“My favorite Christmas memories are of when my twin sister and I were young. It was such a magical time of year, so much excitement waiting for Santa Claus. Our home was decorated so beautifully, and the sweet smell of cookies filled the air. One Christmas morning when we were 7 years old, we were so excited for the wonderful toys from Santa. So many toys of yesteryear are such classics! My favorites were the Easy-Bake-Oven, CreepyCrawlers, and Tinker Toys!” —Dr. Denise Florane February
“Christmas carols always began in our home the day after Thanksgiving, followed by our Christmas tree, adorned with ornaments collected by my family throughout the years. However, it wasn’t until we walked into Saint Joseph Abbey for Midnight Mass that Christmas truly began. From the singing of “Silent Night” through the last notes of “Hark the Herald,” ringing in Christmas at the Abbey is one my favorite traditions of the holiday season.” —Rebecca Bradford December
“My favorite part about Christmas morning is the energy, love and thankfulness in the air. Since it’s close to the end of the year, it provides a chance to think about all of the blessings in life and to share in those feelings of gratitude with family and friends. It also gives you the opportunity to express your gratefulness to those closest to you through gifts and acts of kindness. “ —Amberleigh Carter July “Last year, my two sisters and I wore onesies to open presents on Christmas day. Amberleigh was a tiger, Brittany was a monkey, and I was a cheetah. Being cozy and silly in our outfits made for a lot of laughs and happy tears as we exchanged gifts. I hope we can make it a tradition.” —Christina Carter July
“Each day, twelve days before Christmas, my mom gives me sweet, meaningful or even useful presents: from socks to my favorite snacks! Even since I moved to the Northshore from St. Martinville the tradition continues. I can’t wait to do it for my children one day!” —Chelsea Segura August
“My favorite Christmas tradition is sleeping under the tree with all of my cousins on Christmas Eve. We used to set up shifts every year to watch for Santa. Because I was the youngest and there was an odd number of cousins, I had the shift with my mom. Without fail, every year my mom would ‘forget’ to wake me up for my shift and then ‘fall asleep’. Unfortunately, I always caught the blame for missing Santa.” —Beverly Brown November “My favorite tradition is having seafood gumbo and opening gifts at my parents’ house on Christmas Eve. Now that my brother and I are married and have children of our own, it’s so nice to continue sharing that evening with my parents. The holidays are so hectic and I love knowing that on Christmas Eve I will be able to slow down and focus on being with my family. My mom makes a huge pot of gumbo and we all spend hours eating and enjoying each other’s company. Eventually we all gather around the Christmas tree and exchange gifts with each other.” —Tara Farris Zeller September “Our family usually has a large Christmas Eve party that lasts long into the night. One year, the children were too excited to fall asleep. In an effort to get them to fall asleep fast, we wrestled up a Santa costume and a volunteer willing to climb onto the roof of the house. The children heard the footsteps and ran outside to see Santa standing on the roof. Santa proceeded to tell the children that they must go to sleep before he can deliver the presents and they were sleeping within a matter of minutes.” —Jessica L. Karr September
“After moving to Baton Rouge, I visited with a friend’s family over the holidays in New Iberia. There I learned how to make the best holiday cookies, including Russian rocks, macaroons and my favorite, pralines. The recipes all come from an old cookbook called The Encyclopedia of Cooking by Mary Margaret McBride (1959) and since then I make them every year. They are the most incredible pralines!” —Liza Ledet, DVM October Sophisticated Woman |December 2015 25

Preparing your home for holiday festivities can be a daunting task. Being ‘festive’ seems to require hours of carrying boxes down from the attic, picking the perfect tree and coordinating your décor so it’s not boring or overwhelming. However, there is something very special about a home decorated for the holidays, complete with a blazing hearth and Christmas carols with family that warms the soul. No matter what your style is, we have compiled a few different ways to bring Christmas into your home this season. The mantle is often at the center of holiday gatherings, so we’ve brought together five different ways to decorate your mantle to bring tidings of comfort and joy.

The Pond House WRITTEN BY ANNA LEDONNE PHOTOS BY MARC LAMKIN
WHEN YOU HEAR the name ‘Pond House’, what type of home do you imagine? Is it a quaint log cabin or perhaps a pristine Southern cottage? When you approach the Pond House from its secluded gravel road, you realize the Hammond retreat of Michael and Denise Holly dashes all conventional expectations. A project 20 years in the making, architect Michael Holly purchased the property in 1994. “It was just a piece of ground,” he says, “Nothing special. But I realized it was a blank canvas.” The first step in his master plan was the development of the property. Michael laid the plan out on an axis and personally planted the trees in an arc with Denise. Next, a pond was dug on the same axis with a peninsula of ten oaks creating a great alley in the center of the pond. 20 years later, the trees are fully-grown and the Pond House juts over the edge of the serene pond offering panoramic views of the 15.5-acre landscape. Michael Holly believes that architecture should have an uplifting impact on its environment. As for his aesthetic, he says, “I’m a contextualist. The environment around you influences what you do with it. In this case,
the context is nature, so it frees you up on how to respond.” His mission for the Pond House was to create a sustainable and comfortable design that serves as a model for energy-efficient homes in the future. Its innovative design is already gaining accolades and acclaim. Most recently, the Pond House won an award of excellence in the residential category from the International Interior Design Association and was bestowed a Gold Rose Award by AIA Baton Rouge. The three story, 1,250 square foot home has achieved net-zero energy efficiency, generating as much energy with its solar panel roof as it consumes. The home is also equipped with high-tech heating and cooling systems, lighting and security, which can all be operated remotely to monitor energy usage. When you approach the retreat home, you notice its sloping roof, opaque, light-filtering walls and two transparent volumes that cantilever out of the second floor, blending seamlessly with the surroundings. The first floor features cypress walls and a massive outdoor fireplace and seating area perfect for entertaining. The chairs are made from recycled milk cartons, furthering
the goal of sustainable living. The master plan for this space also includes an outdoor kitchen and dining area in the walk through between the fireplace and the pond. From the seating area, Denise is quick to point out “Al” the resident alligator whose eyes are barely visible above the water. The second floor living room is surrounded by floorto-ceiling windows and juts over the edge of the pond, offering views of the entire property. Its contemporary furnishings don’t compete with the scenery. A sculpture by metal artist John Perilloux accentuates the space in this room and another piece of his complements the dining room. This, Michael says, is his favorite spot in the house during cold months, adding that the room provides many opportunities for spotting wildlife. “We’ve seen foxes, coyotes, bobcats and lots of deer.” The kitchen spans the length of the home between the living and dining rooms. The open shelving and cabinets were custom-made by Johnny Skinner. A slender space, the kitchen is complemented by the 16-foot Caesarstone island. The island is only 18-inches wide but serves as the ideal space for food preparation and buffet-style dinners. Sophisticated Woman |December 2015 33
The dining room sits on the opposite side of the kitchen and the views there are equal to those in the living area. There is a direct line of sight from the dining room through to the pond, with the added bonus of pecan orchard views. “Michael likes to sit and work at the dining table and look out onto the pond,” Denise says. The dining table echoes the contemporary design of the living area. A wooden dining set with black upholstered seats is offset by an “artichoke light” or as the Hollys like to refer to it, a “pinecone light” that mimics the look of a Louis Paulsen creation that Denise bought on Etsy and Michael assembled from the thin oak pieces.
34 Sophisticated Woman | December 2015
The third floor boasts a luxurious master suite including a bedroom, bathroom and observation deck. The bedroom features soaring ceilings, a large four-poster bed and contemporary nightstands, but the pièce de résistance is the observation deck, separated from the bedroom by sliding glass doors. This is Denise’s favorite location in the home, “You can’t beat a morning cup of coffee in this spot,” she says.
The en-suite open shower and bathroom area spans the width of the house and light streams in through the opaque, polycarbonate tongue-and-groove panel walls. The interior wall goes two-thirds of the way to the ceiling, allowing the filtered light to permeate the entire space. An open shower may sound sparse, but in reality the bathroom feels like a modern spa. Michael Holly’s vision proves with this archetype that energy-efficient homes can be comfortable and luxurious. It’s hard to believe that this retreat home is only 1,250 square feet. There is so much space for relaxation with family and friends, entertaining inside and adventure outdoors, that its net-zero energy and tiny footprint are simply added bonuses. Events and Activities to Appreciate This Fall
WRITTEN BY MARLAINE PEACHEY
THE CITY OF MANDEVILLE enthralls visitors and locals year-round with a multitude of public events and outdoor activities for the entire family. You’ll see families playing and exercising on the Mandeville Lakefront, concerts and markets at the Mandeville Trailhead and people dining and shopping in Old Mandeville. December is no exception to the months of activities available to the public. Christmas is just around the corner and residents and visitors will be treated to a fun-filled weekend of events in Mandeville. Festivities begin on Friday, December 11 when the Old Mandeville Business Association (OMBA) hosts their annual “Sips of the Season” from 5–8 P.M. The Sips of the Season beverage stroll requires purchase of a souvenir mug available in advance for $12 at Das Schulerhaus Gift Gallery and Christmas Boutique, Varsity Sports and K. Gee’s Restaurant. Participants will receive a beverage sample at the 19 participating stops. Be sure to purchase your mugs early, they sell out every year! The tradition of beverage strolling with a mug is derived from the German Chriskindlmarkt or Christ Child market. During this season, German cities convert town squares into markets offering mugs for purchase with a warm spiced wine called gluhwein. Along with food, other beverages, seasonal gift items, traditional singing and dancing; each town has a different color mug which makes them coveted collector items. For a complete list of the Sips of the Season stroll stops, go to OMBA’s website, or the Christmas Past Festival Facebook Page. 38 Sophisticated Woman | December 2015
The following morning, Saturday, December 12, OMBA is having their Christmas Past Festival from 9 A.M.–3 P.M. The Christmas Past street festival is packed with over 40 vendors lining Girod Street. The festival will extend from near the Mandeville Trailhead complex and continue down to the lakefront. Keeping with an international season theme, each block will highlight a different region: Germany, England, France, Louisiana and America. Maps and the program of events can be found on the Christmas Past Festival Facebook Page. The City of Mandeville’s Winter on the Water Event begins an hour later on Saturday, December 12, when Santa’s Christmas Parade begins at 4 P.M. at the Lakefront Harbor, complete with live bands, antique cars and marching troupes. The parade culminates at the gazebo where there is live entertainment, featuring Naydja Cojoe. The Mayor will turn on the lights, illuminating the oaks along the lake and a boat parade will follow. The Christmas lights remain lit on the lakefront until New Year’s Day. Santa will remain to give every child a candy cane and take pictures. Christmas Past and Winter on the Water are free events and the general public is invited to attend. Local businesses will be open late so that residents and visitors can get “Wrapped Up In Mandeville.” So make your plans to celebrate the season from December 11 and 12 in the City of Mandeville and come stroll, shop and see what’s in store. Hope you’ll join us to experience the joy of this holiday season!
