Traditions Make Room For Current Trends WRITTEN BY CARA DAVIS
Sophisticated Woman | March 2012
ECONOMIC WOES play a part even in today’s weddings. Couples are choosing to spend their money more wisely. According to a recent study from TheWeddingReport.com, brides and grooms are paying for more of the wedding bill themselves (to the tune of $10,000–$20,000), and they’re having more fun with it. “We are seeing couples move
8
away from formal and traditional type weddings to fun, romantic, simple, casual and unique weddings with a touch of formal and tradition,” the report reads. Here are the trends forecasted for 2012, as couples scale back, simplify and reflect their personalities. It’s a small world. Couples are keeping a tight rein on guest numbers (under 150), to keep the overall costs down. Autumn leads. While June is the reigning month for marriages, September is a close second, and other months including August and October are on the rise. Rustic and vintage themes. Brides are planning more “rustic, country chic” weddings, making use of natural surroundings and backyard venues. Do it yourself (DIY) reigns. “You can do things for so much cheaper yourself!” says one bride, who relies on sites like Pinterest.com for ideas. She’s not alone. Many brides are taking on most of the wedding day tasks including, the flowers, invitations, personal websites and sometimes even the cake. Tech love. Today’s brides are using online planning
tools, online registries and even incorporating technology into the wedding day itself. Online blogs often provide the inspiration brides are looking for to piece together their day. Sweet endings. Dessert buffets continue to take a bite out of receptions, with nontraditional choices like: square mini-cakes and cupcake tiers, Whoopie Pies, cake pops, color-coordinated candy and even ice cream sundae stations or a cookies and milk bar. The dessert choices reflects a touch of whimsical. Color me vibrant. One bride opted for a formal royal blue theme, and softened it with yellow and white accents. According to TheWeddingReport.com, some of the biggest colors this year are purples and green as well as jewel tones. Casually groomed. Much to the relief of grooms everywhere, tuxedo rentals are out and suits and casual wear are in. TheWeddingReport.com states demand for tuxedo rental is down 11 percent over 2010 numbers. Candid cameras. Formal photos are out and candid shots are in—as long as they fit with the look and feel of the wedding day. Demand for photo booths continues to rise as a fun way to capture memories. Close to home. TheWeddingReport.com predicts destination weddings will decline or remain flat in 2012 as couples are sticking close to home for the wedding day. They are also choosing more outdoor and/or all-inclusive locations to simplify their weddings and save money. Staying put. Not only are couples staying close to home, they’re opting to host the ceremony and reception in the same location—again, to save money and simplify. Many venues offer brides an all-inclusive wedding package complete with a bridal attendant to keep the day’s events on track. Whatever plan you put in place for your wedding day, remember to stay true to yourself and enjoy the day. Weddings expert Cara Davis is the author of Cheap Ways to Tie the Knot and blogs about ways to spend and save at CheapWaysTo.com.

Get Fit— The Smart Way NOW IS A GREAT TIME to start an exercise program. Mardi Gras and the holidays are behind us, and with our sub-tropical climate in Louisiana, swimsuit weather is a few short months away. But wait—there is just one thing that you need to do before you rush into the club and start sweating—your preexercise screening. Every year, we physical therapists treat plenty of folks who jumped into an exercise program but unfortunately hurt themselves within the first two weeks. These injuries normally occurred because there was already an underlying problem. Tight leg muscles, weak lower back, stiff neck, sore shoulders; the possible list of causes is long. The last thing that you want is to get injured in your exercise program, sit out while you get better, and have to wait another month or two before you can get started all over again.
The last thing that you want is to get injured in your exercise program, sit out while you get better, and have to wait… The solution is receiving a screening from your physical therapist. A qualified physical therapist will be able to determine if there are any factors that may make you prone to specific injuries. Most importantly, they should be able to show you stretching techniques or exercise modifications that will help prevent problems from occurring. So get out there and start exercising, but do it intelligently. Schedule your screening first. You’ll be healthier and you’ll probably achieve results faster.

Expertise and Innovation in the Heart of Covington— Elizabeth A. Kinsley, MD

BOARD CERTIFIED plastic surgeon Elizabeth Kinsley, MD has earned her place as one of the nation’s leading breast and body physicians in her field. In fact, her ingenuity and creativity caught the eye of the breast implant manufacturer, Allergan. Allergan was so impressed with her implant sizing system, that they now include this as part of their product line for other surgeons. Thanks to Dr. Kinsley, now all patients have the opportunity to “try before you buy.” This type of medical breakthrough is what sets her apart. With roots here in the metropolitan area, Dr. Kinsley’s revolutionary practice sits here on the Northshore—nestled in the heart of Covington. In late 2011, Dr. Kinsley and members of her staff Daniel, Ashley and their newest team member Bailie, moved into a newly designed and constructed, cutting edge facility that could very well have been plucked from the center of Beverly Hills. The office is a peaceful respite that welcomes patients with a lush water feature combined with sensual cool colors and smart modern furniture which only enhances Dr. Kinsley’s treasured works of art which adorn the walls. Aside from the external features which are pleasing to the eyes and the senses, patients can rest assured that their care remains on the cutting edge as well. Dr. Kinsley will tell you that one of her greatest strengths as a physician is placed into motion before any procedure ever even begins. “Listening to my patients and matching their expectations to reality, is essential to a successful outcome,” she notes. “I listen to what they want and then we discuss what I can give them. We collaborate so that we can get the best outcome.” Dr. Kinsley Dr. Elizabeth A. Kinsley and staff from left: Bailie Lauderdale, Ashley Catanzaro and Daniél Dazet.

I enjoy every aspect of what I do,” she says. “It is fun, I am able to be creative and mostly I am able to enhance the lives of many happy, healthy patients here in the place I call home.” Dr. Kinsley’s office is located at 1441 Ochsner Boulevard in Covington, 985-893-3737. performs breast, body and facial procedures herself, including fillers. “The use of fillers is really expanding,” she says. “We once used fillers primarily around the nasolabial fold, but we have discovered that we can use them around the jaw line, cheekbones— even on the hands to give a more youthful appearance.” The professionals who work with doctor Kinsley put patients at ease, as they understand the needs and concerns of women. Dr. Kinsley says that many patients come in well before their scheduled appointments to enjoy the relaxing atmosphere in the office and learn about new procedures from the personable, welcoming staff. Bailie Lauderdale who recently joined the practice, found her place immediately. She is a certified laser specialist and licensed cosmetologist who was trained in Los Angeles, California where she earned specialties at Make-Up Designory (MUD) school. She performs laser procedures, offers mineral makeup instruction with the Jane Iredale makeup line, and promotes the benefits of top skin care lines offered by Dr. Kinsley such as Vivite and Image. “We do everything we can to ensure that women who come to us for any procedure from breast augmentation to skin care, achieve the results they desire,” Dr. Kinsley says. “Our new office embodies the culmination of my experience as a seasoned plastic surgeon having performed countless successful procedures, years of teamwork from my incredible support staff, and the most

ALLYSON MCMAHON IS UNAFRAID when it comes to just about everything. She exudes fortitude and clear-headed focus, and she will tell you her strength in business is in her ability to diplomatically delegate. As co-owner of Three Rivers Services, LLC, an expectant mother of two young children, and wife to her business partner and high school sweetheart, Calvin, Allyson is a tremendous example of a woman whose plate is both full and fruitful. “Work is very important,” she notes, “but what is more important is to make sure that our children and family are taken care of.” No matter the paths she has chosen, Allyson has navigated them with fervor. In high school, she managed to explore two career tracks, she earned her college degree in just over three years, and she plunged into the air conditioning and heating business to join her husband in his already successful career. “We bought this business within one year after we married,” she remembers. “My husband had worked for the previous owners and it was under their mentorship he learned this business from the ground up. He has worked in this company for 13 years—our business has been here on the Northshore for over three decades.” As a woman and a mom, Allyson’s perspective is essential to running a full-service business involving the installation, maintenance and repair of such an integral component of the home. “In South Louisiana, air conditioning is vital,” she says. “As the owner and as a mom, I realize that the lady of the house is usually

You will always know where to find us.” In addition to spending free time with their large extended families, Allyson, Calvin and their children enjoy the amenities available in abundance. “We spend so much time with our children at the local parks, and enjoying the outdoors,” she says. “I have grown up in this wonderful place where we have such a strong sense of community, yet we are not afraid of positive progress. Being able to live and work in a place we love so much—we have definitely found our happy medium.” Three Rivers Services, LLC installs Trane products exclusively. To learn more, or to set up a service appointment, call 985-892-7071, or visit www.threeriversairandheat.com.
“As the owner and as a mom, I realize that the lady of the house is usually the person who will be on hand when a service call is answered. That is why we have chosen a team of professionals we would be glad to welcome into our own homes.”

the person who will be on hand when a service call is answered. That is why we have chosen a team of professionals we would be glad to welcome into our own homes.” Not only do employees face a rigorous evaluation process before they are hired, once on board, they commit in writing to professional standards of behavior while on the job. Each team member is in an easily identifiable uniform and they arrive in a marked service vehicle so there is no question as to who they represent. After each appointment, Allyson or a member of her team places a personal call to check in and to give customers the opportunity to give either a “compliment or a complaint.” “Our goal is to ensure that our customers trust us. We want to build a lasting relationship with our clients with real feedback,” she says. “I love the people we have met. I love hearing their stories and hearing about their families. We have clients we check in on regularly whether or not they need a service call. Our customers keep us abreast of important events in their lives, and if they need us at a critical time, we work with their schedules to make the appointment happen.” Allyson says it is so important to have the right air conditioning and heating system, but equally as important to maintain it with trained professionals. She stresses that what once was a much more straightforward business has now turned into a highly technological and scientific industry. “We offer every service available when it comes to air conditioning and heating. We have scheduled maintenance agreements, we change out duct work, and we have an air purification system we can put in place, in addition to installing new Trane systems and repairing any make and model,” she says. “But most importantly, our highly trained staff is well-versed in the amazing new technology out there.” As lifelong residents of St. Tammany Parish, the McMahons are compelled by their love of the community to give back. Many area service organizations relish the benefit of their membership and their time. “We are deeply rooted here,” she says. “We grew up here, we are raising our family here, our children are in school here, we are more than happy to give back. Top Ten Reasons to Go to Camp WRITTEN BY DR. MARY W. SPEED
SUMMER WILL BE HERE in no time. Here are some of the best reasons, I think, children should experience camp. • To test kids’ independence so that they learn how to establish healthy separation. • To master skills like swimming and running over the summer, which may save embarrassment during the school year. • Become gifted at things like crafts and

personal responsibility. Practice how to make new friends. Face letting go of friends. Learn catchy songs. Meet other campers whose families are
stranger than your own. • Have time to miss your own family. • Be in line and not online. • Have something to say the first day back at school when you are asked, “What did you do over summer vacation?” For parents, getting up in the middle of the night to tend to their infants, the distance to the nursery can seem vast—way too far away. Yet children need not only time but space to grow. Camp allows youths a place to develop and test lifelong skills they will always use.
Camp allows youths a place to develop and test lifelong skills they will always use. Specialty camps exist to address varied interests. All camp experiences though, have the common thread of youths having space from their families. Time spans away vary from hours to months, and the distances range from miles to other states, or continents, as in studying abroad. The rule is start out with the times and distances, which are tolerable; then grow this space. Through camp, the capacity to handle frustration may be revealed and grown. The enrichment of the camp experience offers the potential of healthy development. Character. Action. Motivation. Positive attitude.

The Many Treasures of Ponchatoula

Sophisticated Woman | March 2012
THERE IS A REASON why the historic city of Ponchatoula has so many namesakes including, The Strawberry Capital of the World, America’s Antique City and Mayberry of the Deep South. Ponchatoula is all that and more! In the mid-1800’s, James Clark, a surveyor for the Great Northern Railroad Company, saw her promise in the first dry land north of the swamps of Lake Pontchartrain. He plotted the grid of streets using the newly constructed railroad tracks to dissect the settlement. The town was named Ponchatoula after the Ponchatoula River flowing west of town. The name is of Choctaw origin and means hanging hair, a reference to the bryophyte Spanish moss which draped the surrounding and abundant oaks and cypresses. Collinswood Museum, The Louisiana

Treasures Museum, the Strawberry Farmer’s Wall of Honor, the historic locomotive and train station, as well as the 19th century architecture, all offer visitors the opportunity to explore our rich and diverse history. The logging industry initially supported the town, but eventually farmers became aware of the rich composted soil, and with the invention of refrigerated railroad cars and stronger varieties of berries, the strawberry industry flourished. Ask anyone and they will tell you Ponchatoula’s berries are sweeter, bigger and juicier than anywhere else in the world. As southern Louisianans, native Ponchatoulans celebrated the fruits of their labors, and the annual Strawberry Festival came into existence, becoming the second largest annual festival in Louisiana
next to Mardi Gras. In the 1980’s the development of the downtown antique district energized the Ponchatoula economy. In America’s Antique City, antique and junque shops as well as boutique, gift and art shops continue to occupy Pine Street, also known as Ponchatoula’s Main Street. The original historic architecture as designed a century ago, adds to the antique, quaint, smalltown feel of historic downtown Ponchatoula. Antique Trade Days and the Arts and Crafts Fair held each March and November brings hundreds of vendors and thousands of visitors to the city each year. Nowadays, Ponchatoula is quickly becoming known as an emergent artist community. Different artists including painters, sculptors
Everyone knows that when planning a day trip or an evening away from home, finding a “just right” place to dine is a Louisianan’s priority, and Ponchatoula offers just the right place for just about everyone.

Citizens’ Help Needed for New Endeavor
WRITTEN BY MIKE COOPER, MAYOR OF COVINGTON
KEEP COVINGTON BEAUTIFUL (KCB) is a nonprofit organization that enhances our city’s natural environment by engaging citizens in beautification projects, and promoting litter prevention, recycling and environmental education. As Mayor of Covington, I am proud to have such a dedicated organization working to preserve the beauty of our community. In April 2011, KCB received a $10,000 grant from the UPS Foundation to build a nature trail at the Covington Recreation Complex, located off Ronald Reagan Highway in Covington. The “Blue Swamp Creek Nature Trail” is beginning to take shape. The trail, approximately one mile long, will wind through the wetlands along Blue Swamp Creek. It will serve as both a recreational trail and an educational tool. KCB Director Priscilla Floca says the trail will “educate people about the different creeks that run through Covington and why they are important.” KCB also
plans to incorporate educational tools regarding the numerous plant species that have been identified on the site. Although the grant funds have had tremendous impact in getting the trail underway, additional assistance is needed to ensure the project’s continued success. KCB needs donations and volunteers to help install and construct various structures, including pavers, plant ID markers, bridges, trees, stepping stones and signage. Material and monetary donations are also needed. For more information about the project or to learn how you can help, contact Priscilla Floca at 985-867-3652. KCB will also host its annual Covington Clean & Green Run/Walk on Saturday, April 28, to benefit the nature trail. For race information, visit www.15thstreetflyers.org. Your participation and support of this and all community endeavors is greatly appreciated.

Keep Mandeville Beautiful—Especially This Month

WRITTEN BY DONALD VILLERE, MAYOR OF MANDEVILLE
SPRING CLEANING HAS begun in the City of Mandeville. We will be competing against other cities across the state of Louisiana for the title of Cleanest City. Keep Mandeville Beautiful (KMB) has entered the contest which is hosted by the Louisiana Federation of Garden Clubs. At the end of March, state judges will drive around Mandeville grading the city’s cleanliness, attractiveness and overall appeal. We are asking everyone to pitch in to help by cleaning up the front of their businesses and homes during the entire month of March. KMB will be working with volunteers to help spruce up the city by cleaning up,
planting flowers, and weeding and mulching gardens. There will be an official citywide cleanup on Saturday, March 17 for volunteers to come out and help. If you would like to help, call Susan Russell at 985-274-3165. Students at Pontchartrain Elementary recently identified 100 tips on what we can do to clean up Mandeville. For more information, check our website at www.cityofmandeville.com. March 24 is an election day and a Republican Presidential Primary. The election is for the Mayor of Mandeville as well as City Councilmen. Don’t forget to vote!

Grant Helps Long-Term Vision Take Shape
WRITTEN BY FREDDY DRENNAN, MAYOR OF SLIDELL
I AM PLEASED to announce that the City of Slidell has received a $1.5 million Boating Infrastructure Grant from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service for the Slidell Municipal Marina at Heritage Park. We are honored to be one of 10 states to receive this grant money. More than $7.5 million in grants were awarded to 11 different boating projects. I’m proud to say that the City of Slidell was awarded the largest amount of money. I would like to thank Slidell Councilman Bill Borchert, the Slidell City Council and the numerous city employees who helped to secure these funds for the city. I would also like to thank the Louisiana Department
of Wildlife and Fisheries, who will partner with the City of Slidell to help with this exciting project. Plans include reinforcing existing bulkheads, constructing 42 floatinglay-along docking spaces and installing safe walkways that will allow boaters easier access to Heritage Park and Olde Towne Slidell. Transient boaters will also have accommodations to dock and stay awhile in Slidell. This project will allow boaters to dock their vessels and enjoy concerts in Heritage Park and the many restaurants and shops in Olde Towne. It is part of the first phase of my long-term goal of developing the entire bayou area to its full potential as a tourist destination and a place for our citizens to enjoy.
Miramon Construction Awarded Honor
WRITTEN BY DAWN SHARPE-BRACKETT, EAST ST. TAMMANY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE CEO
THE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT Pioneer Award was established to recognize community leaders who have inspired and promoted economic development and growth of our region during the 50 years that the East St. Tammany Chamber has been in existence. This year the honor was presented to Louis “Pat” Miramon, Jr. and Miramon Construction. Mr. Pat enlisted in the Navy at age 17 and served in the South Pacific until he was 19 at which time he began an apprenticeship under his father. In 1948, Pat married Gloria Hilda Schindler and they have four daughters. Mr. Pat started building in Slidell in 1954 with Westchester Subdivision, the first subdivision with concrete streets. Mr. Pat was the organizer of the St. Tammany Homebuilders Association and the Slidell Rotary Club. On March 6, 1965, Miramon Construction
joined the Slidell Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Pat was on the Slidell Planning Commission for 14 years. In 1978, Miramon Realty was the largest realtor in Slidell. Mr. Pat continues to serve on the National Homebuilders Association and holds a lifetime director position. In 1995 Miramon Construction broke ground on The Bluffs Subdivision and four years later on The Landings. In 2002, he was the first man inducted in the St. Tammany Homebuilders Hall of Fame. Mr. Pat has received over 68 awards and acknowledgments for his community devotion and service. It is with great honor that the East St. Tammany Chamber adds to his awards with the presentation of the Economic Development Pioneer Award for 2012. Education Reform at the Forefront of Legislative Session
38
WRITTEN BY LACEY TOLEDANO, WEST ST. TAMMANY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE PRESIDENT
AS CITIZENS WE ALL have the right to vote for or against tax renewals, candidates and issues. After we vote for the candidates, they are the ones that vote for us. It is legislative session time, and our legislative delegation is listening. They want to know where their constituents stand on important issues. Recall when ethics reform, led by Governor Jindal in the first year of his first term, was overhauled. It pushed Louisiana from the bottom to the top of charts, having a positive impact on economic development and the overall image of our state’s elected officials ever since. “The” big issue this session will be the governor’s K-12 education reform package. While St. Tammany public schools rank among the highest in our state, this is a statewide issue. The governor is adamantly aggressive in his pursuit of new laws
that will impact the futures of our children. Similar major education reforms have taken place in Florida, Indiana and New York City over the past 10 years. Testimony from those state’s reform leaders at the “Leadership for Change” conference attended by over 800 teachers, superintendants, business and elected leaders was inspiring, setting a positive tone of hope for proposed changes in accountability and an end to the need for remediation for so many Louisiana children. Former Florida Governor Jeb Bush proposed that Louisiana become like Florida after 10 years of reform— catapult our rankings from the bottom to the top of national school ranking lists. As this issue proceeds in the House and Senate Education Committees, our Chamber will keep our members and citizens informed through our new web portal.
