WHAT IS IT about the month of April that it seems to boost our spirits yet exhaust us at the same time? The extended days beckon us to stay outside and play with our children just a little longer and to extend that stroll into the next block. The warmer weather makes it so easy to enjoy that backyard barbeque or plant that spring garden. April seems like a gift. On the other hand, school is wrapping up, sports are in full swing and it can feel like we might never get everything accomplished. But somehow, we always do. So, I plan to head out to the ballpark for those little league baseball games, wave to my neighbors as they take their evening strolls, and enjoy watching the little ones filled with Spring fever.

April is Math Awareness Month

2/3 Junior Page Bleed—6.1295” x 11”

IF AN ALGEBRAIC equation or a page full of fractions makes your children want to run, they are not alone. Many students have math anxiety; however, they will have to master a lot of math before they graduate. Also, today’s most interesting and lucrative careers depend on math success. One of the first steps in helping students overcome anxiety is knowing what is expected at each grade level. Since past skills build on future skills, it is imperative that each level is mastered. In pre-kindergarten through second grade, you must focus on the basics. This includes whole numbers, common fractions, two-andthree dimensional shapes, sorting, classifying, and understanding length, weight, volume, area and time. Addition and subtraction facts are mastered. In third through fifth, students should have a good understanding of fractions, decimals, percents and negative numbers. This is when they are highly engaged in the building blocks of algebra and advanced geometry. Multiplication and division facts are mastered. Junior high is critical for both confidence and mathematical reasons. This is when many students develop the “I’m not good at math” philosophy. Confidence in math is vital for the challenges that are ahead. Students need to use fundamental algebraic and geometric concepts to problem solve. There needs to be an excellent understanding of ratios, proportions, prime numbers and exponents. For high school students who do not master these levels, they will not be able to face their greatest mathematics challenges successfully. You can demystify math by ensuring your children have a solid foundation. If they are struggling in math, you will want to get help right away. With a positive attitude and a focus on problem areas, students can find a winning formula for success. Ann Habisreitinger Barré, M.Ed is the Director of Huntington Learning Center® at 1748A N. ASAP Treatment for Skin Conditions THE OLD SAYING “Timing is everything” is especially important for particular skin conditions where treatment is significantly more effective if begun early. At the recent American Academy of Dermatology meeting in New Orleans, vitiligo was added to this list which includes conditions such as shingles and warts. Vitiligo produces large patches of completely white skin, contrasting with the adjacent skin of normal color. Researchers have concluded that treatment with prescription creams and ultraviolet (UV) light within three weeks of its onset produces much higher response rates compared to delayed treatment. Optimal results can also be achieved with early treatment for the common splotchy pigmentation so often seen on the faces of adult women by using prescription bleaching creams that can return the skin to its natural tone. Skin infections should always be addressed early, and the immediate treatment of shingles is especially important. If an area on one side of the body is tender to touch or a red, blistering rash on the face, scalp, torso, or limbs is evident, a dermatologist should be seen that day, if possible. Early and aggressive treatment of the involved areas of skin may spare months or years of intense, debilitating pain. If three or four days elapse before treatment of shingles is sought, it is often too late to avoid a painful, long-term recovery. Finally, seek treatment for warts when they are small and few in numbers. If allowed to grow into small “cauliflowers,” numerous and more aggressive treatments may be required. This is especially true of warts around the nails and on the palms and soles. When confronted with these timesensitive maladies, seek a skin specialist immediately.

Family First at Three Divas and a Sugardaddy

Sophisticated Woman | April 2011

WRITTEN BY AMY BOUTON PHOTOS BY STEVE RANDON

WHEN SYLVIA Reine’s husband of 30 years, Ronnie, approached her with the idea of opening a shop in the La Reine Olde Towne Centre in Slidell, she immediately thought of the two women in her life she would most like to help her do it. Her daughter Laura Reine and her daughter-in-law Leonette Loe were the obvious choices, and Three Divas and a Sugardaddy Fine Gifts was brought to fruition. Sylvia has over three decades of experience in everything from construction, to disaster cleanup, to landscape, subdivision and interior design. In fact, her husband Ronnie was among the first on the scene in New Orleans in the direct aftermath of hurricane Katrina, while Sylvia, who had evacuated to her sister’s house in north Louisiana, coordinated the cleanup from there. “It was a scary time for me. I was petrified because we could see that the levees had been breached, but Ronnie didn’t even know about it. Luckily, he evacuated to safety until our crews could get in and clean up.” Far from a major disaster cleanup like the Superdome or the Convention Center, Sylvia says the formula for success at Three Divas and a Sugardaddy is the same. “Pulling your people together and surrounding yourself with people you can trust is important,” she says. “I enjoy disaster cleanup and we have a great team. At Three Divas, we have so much fun and we are not only family, we are friends. The girls who work with us are exceptional.” When it comes to working so closely with her daughter Laura and daughter-in-law Leonette, Sylvia could not be happier. “Leonette does an extraordinary job of showcasing our inventory. I have so much appreciation for her design and setup. And Laura, well, she is our number cruncher. If things get stressful, we just take turns having meltdowns.” Leonette has lived in Slidell her entire life. In fact, she was born at Slidell Memorial Hospital. Her hands-on experience helping with her stepfather’s dry cleaning business in Slidell equipped her well for running Three Divas and a Sugardaddy. “This is what I was meant to do. I like to coordinate things and see everything come together. And of course, I like to shop!” And she even enjoys working closely with her in-laws. “Laura and I were friends before

I married Jason, and Sylvia is the sweetest person. She is just like my Mom. I have never seen her be unkind to anyone. My in-laws treat me like their own daughter.” Leonette credits Sylvia for her people skills. “Sylvia is great with everyone she meets, but especially with our employees, whom we love. She makes people feel awesome. She is the person who keeps in touch with emails and phone calls.” All the ladies bring a little of their own flavor to the store, from the rhinestone embellished black denim jacket featuring an Elvis silhouette (Sylvia’s favorite), to the kitchenware and home décor Leonette loves. But their aspiration was to open a store where customers can find a gift for anyone in any price range. With baby clothing and gifts, children’s clothing and accessories, bridal party gifts and gifts for the bride and groom, jewelry, men’s and women’s clothing and accessories, they have exceeded those aspirations. Not just for children and ladies, Three Divas carries the entire Jack Black men’s skin care line. You can choose from understated but classic ties for the college or NFL sports fan, masculine camouflage luggage for the rugged outdoorsmen, and tailgating necessities he will use for years to come. Moms on the go can go in style with trendy diaper bags, Natural Life Organic clothing, shoes by All Around Uptown Girls and Jimmy Crystal New York sunglasses. The Consuela line of

handbags, luggage and beach bags channels the Caribbean just in time for the warmer weather. In addition, they carry the Lafco, New York candle line, specialty soaps, home and outdoor décor, glazed pottery and custom tableware and linens. Handmade quilts from Sylvia’s hometown of Urania, Louisiana, stand in the front of the store, along with hand-made wares from many local and regional vendors. “We try to carry products from locals in here as much as possible,” Leonette says. If it’s made in the USA, Sylvia says they try to house it in the store. “We try to put as many things in here as we can that are made in America. It is definitely a priority for us.” Once you find that perfect gift, choose a greeting card from their extensive selection of Blue Mountain cards, while you wait for your complimentary gift wrapping. While Sylvia and Leonette share a common bond through their business endeavor, their strongest bond is the one they share as family. Their eyes fill with tears when they talk about their relationship. “I want to be there for my family. I hope to pass on to my grandchildren that they should love and enjoy their family while they are here,” Sylvia says.

Lasers and Orthodontics

LASERS? YES, LASERS. This may sound like something out of a Star Wars movie, but lasers have become a valuable instrument in most, if not all, segments of dentistry. Lasers come in all shapes and sizes, but the critical difference is the type of tissue the laser will “cut.” This is described as either hard-tissue (teeth) or soft tissue (gums). In orthodontics, soft tissue lasers are the norm. Soft tissue lasers in orthodontics serve several purposes, and can reduce treatment time in some cases. For teeth that are slow to erupt, and covered with gum tissue, your orthodontist can “uncover” the tooth and glue a brace on at that visit. This allows the orthodontist to move that tooth into the proper position sooner than simply waiting for it to erupt. The laser is great for contouring the gums around teeth to improve the smile esthetics. It is also super for removing swollen gum tissue due to less than stellar hygiene, nickel allergy or mouth breathing.

The discomfort is minimal; the best frame of reference 2/3 Junior Page Bleed—6.1295” x 11”

is a pizza burn, and the healing process is usually a matter of days.

The entire procedure takes less than 30 minutes, and in most instances is performed under topical anesthesia (no shots). The discomfort is minimal; the best frame of reference is a pizza burn, and the healing process is usually a matter of days. Another feature is that the procedure is bloodless. Lasers have entered the realm of dentistry and are here to stay. They are a great tool that allows for increased esthetics, better results, and—when appropriate—more efficient treatment.

І leaders St. Tammany Citizens Rally After Storms

WRITTEN BY KEVIN DAVIS, ST. TAMMANY PARISH PRESIDENT

ONCE AGAIN, WE HAVE had the opportunity to witness the generosity of the citizens of St. Tammany Parish and the strong devotion to duty held by parish workers, utility crews, Sheriff’s deputies and our fire fighters. On the morning of March 9, three tornadoes hit St. Tammany Parish: one in the Bush/Waldheim area, one north of Lacombe, and one northeast of Slidell. Neighbors were out immediately helping neighbors. Emergency personnel were on the scenes quickly and worked with amazing speed and efficiency. While homeland security, deputies and firefighters were assessing damage and our public works crews were clearing streets for emergency traffic.

Some of the examples of generosity include: the service station on the corner of East Gause and Pearl in Slidell provided hot coffee in the rain to emergency responders, American Red Cross volunteers provided assistance in the Lake Village Subdivision, and Home Depot donated tarps and labor to some of the worst hit homes. This community came out strongly to help its own. In light of the recent events in Japan, we are all thankful these storms did not cause any loss of life in St. Tammany. As the world prayed for our area postKatrina, now our hearts go out to the citizens of that devastated country.

Come Out For an Enchanted Evening at Heritage Park

WRITTEN BY FREDDY DRENNAN, MAYOR OF SLIDELL

I AM EXTENDING AN invitation to you and your family and friends, to come out to Heritage Park on Saturday, April 30, for the city’s ninth annual Some Enchanted Evening with the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra. The concert begins at 6 p.m. but you will want to arrive early to enjoy all of the pre-concert festivities. Admission is free. The evening begins at 4 p.m. with an Enchanted Art Walk where local artists will demonstrate their talents and have their works on display. And of course there’s the annual Mayor’s Picnic Contest. I’m challenging everyone to get their family and friends together and create the perfect picnic scene. In the past we’ve had patriotic picnics, Cajun cooking and all kinds of clever themes. So grab your blankets, picnic baskets, ice

chests and decorations and come out to Heritage Park to enjoy a magical evening. During intermission, I will recognize the most creative picnic spreads and announce the winners of each of these four categories: Perfect Interlude (most romantic setting), Chromatic Overtures (most creative picnic spread), Grand Staff (best presentation by an organization or office group), and Minor Scales (little folks with big ideas—ages 12 and under). Participants should register near the gazebo in Heritage Park starting at 5 p.m. I look forward to seeing how creative you can get. I urge everyone to show their community spirit and participate in this event.

Get Your Booth at Expo 2011

WRITTEN BY LACEY TOLEDANO, WEST ST. TAMMANY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE PRESIDENT

WE ARE PLEASED TO announce that booth sales are underway for our 17th annual EXPO—the region’s largest business trade show—set to take place on May 4. We have secured a new location in the River Chase Shopping Center on Highway 21 (the former Linens N’ Things space), near I-12. This convenient location will allow for higher visibility and increased foot traffic for our exhibitors. Another change this year is the time frame, which will be from 3–7 p.m. We expect available booth space to sell fast. We are also in the midst of our annual Membership Drive. If you are a business owner who has thought about joining the chamber, now is the time! Or, if you

are already a member with a desire to get involved, this is a fun way to start! Recruiting efforts will be led by the Membership Drive Committee and its chairman Cynthia Thompson of Merrill Lynch. We will have several teams that will compete to recruit the most new members. Our goal is 100 new members and our team captains are geared up to meet that goal. But more importantly, we hope to develop relationships with these new members, and help them learn the value of chamber membership. If you are interested in becoming a member of our chamber or an exhibitor at EXPO 2011 call 892-3216 or visit www.sttammanychamber.org.

The Sweet Smell of Frittata WRITTEN BY PAUL CIMINO

“FOOD, GLORIOUS FOOD,” chanted the children in the musical Oliver. This is the same song sung throughout Italy and the world. Undoubtedly, Italian cuisine is one of the three top cuisines of the world. What makes it so? Its simplicity, combined with its strong ability to impart delicious flavors. If you’ve ever been to Italy, you’re assured lifetime memories of a diner’s paradise. With springtime upon us and summer on the horizon, we leave behind the heavier meals of winter in search of foods which are light, satisfying and at the same time, pleasantly filling. Another great feature of Italian cuisine is that many of its appetizers can be served as a main course, and vice versa. The following is a recipe which best demonstrates this fact and satisfies the most discerning palate. This is just another culinary gift from southern Italy. Try it, and you’ll understand Mama Mia! Buon appetito. Ciao, Ciao.

Frittata Profumata (Frittata With Fresh Mixed Herbs) 10 sprigs Italian parsley, leaves only 1/4 cup fresh basil leaves, torn 1/4 cup fresh mint leaves 6 extra large eggs 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil 1/3 pound cherry tomatoes, halved Salt and pepper to taste Wash and dry the parsley, basil and mint leaves. Finely chop the parsley. In a deep bowl, beat the eggs with a whisk. Add the herbs and a little salt and pepper to the beaten eggs. Place in a well oiled nine inch cake pan and sprinkle top with remaining salt and pepper and cherry tomatoes. Place into a preheated 350 degree oven and cook for about 20-25 minutes until golden and firm. Serve with crusty Italian bread and tossed salad, together with a full bodied red wine for a great meal. Chef’s tip: For additional flavor, top frittata with one cup grated provolone or mozzarella cheese over the tomatoes.

Springtime and Mandeville

WRITTEN BY DONALD VILLERE, MAYOR OF MANDEVILLE

SPRING IS UPON US, filling our lives and our community with new growth, colorful landscaping and a variety of outdoor activities. Here are just a few things happening in Mandeville, but for the latest updates, check out our website at www.cityofmandeville.com. The City of Mandeville in partnership with the Northshore Community Foundation, contracted with Duany Plater-Zyberk & Company to develop the Town Center Resiliency Plan. Grant funding for the plan was secured from the Louisiana Recovery Authority Comprehensive Resiliency Program. An intensive public planning process began in March and will be wrapping up at the time of this publishing. Final documents and plans will face final approval by the council in early June. Implementation embraces New Urbanism and Smart Growth principles to focus the city’s economic energy into a critical mass and provide for the civic needs of identity, community and sense

of place as well as provide an identifiable civic and city center; blending housing, offices and shops within walking distance of each other. Mandeville Live! free Friday concerts have been a success at the Mandeville Trailhead. The last one is scheduled for April 15, featuring Kingsroe. Gates open at 6 p.m. and the concert is from 6:30–8:30 p.m. Local vendors will have refreshments available for purchase as no outside food or drink is allowed. Join in the fun! On Saturday, April 9th from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. volunteers are invited to clean and beautify Mandeville. Individuals, families and groups are encouraged to participate. This is also a great way for students to earn community service hours. Projects will include litter pick up, flower planting, weeding and mulching. Register by email at kmb@cityofmandeville.com or by calling Director Susan Russell at 985-3165.

BOGUE FALAYA PARK was the setting for quite a party on Sunday March 20. The 2011 Chef Soiree to benefit the Youth Service Bureau marked the 27th year of this culinary event. With more than 85 participating restaurants and beverage distributors, patrons were treated to everything from Creole, Classic, Mexican, to Italian cuisine and more, from in and around the metro area. With beautiful sunny weather and moderate temperatures as a backdrop, crowds were greeted by the New Orleans Hornets Drumline, danced the evening away to the sounds of musical groups like Burgundy, the Line King Dancers and the Hurricane Levee Band, and had the opportunity to meet honorary event chairs, New Orleans Saints fullback Heath Evans and his wife Beth Ann. Dancing, dining and imbibing lasted well into the night to make Chef Soiree 2011 a spectacular success.

For Ashley Burris, RDH her greatest joy comes from getting to know her patients and giving them a cleaner mouth and an immediate esteem boost. She has some advice for her adult patients out there. “Periodontal Disease can go undiagnosed because you may not even have pain,” she says. Periodontal “probes” or “checks” measure the space between the gums and the bone. These probes are a key indicator of gum health. “If you visit the dentist now, you will save so much money in the future. Prevention is what keeps the costs down.” Ashley graduated from the LSU School of Dentistry in 2007.
