Biomed Plus: Service in the Spirit of Excellence SINCE 2002, BIOMED PLUS

has been providing doctors, dentists, veterinarians and health professionals of all kinds with quality medical equipment sales and service. According to owner James Blount, “I think this industry goes fairly unnoticed in a lot of ways. I believe it is truly one of the most essential parts of the healthcare industry, though. Healthcare professionals' primary focus should always be on their patients' care. If the equipment they are using doesn’t work properly, they are distracted from that focus. Our team ensures that equipment is calibrated and functioning according to manufacturer’s specifications and meets regulatory agency standards for safety. Therefore, healthcare professionals can devote their attention to patient care. Our standard is to treat each device as if the next person it is used on will be one of our own family members. Hence our motto: 'Service in the Spirit of Excellence.’” Biomed Plus has partnerships with manufacturers, distributors and refurbishing companies across the country to provide and source the right solution for customers' equipment needs. "Whether new or refurbished, we accommodate any budget to provide the best equipment to match our customers' requirements ranging from outfitting entire clinics or surgery centers to specialized equipment such as ultrasound machines, patient monitors, autoclaves, EKG devices, stress systems, vital sign monitors, scales and much more. With every purchase, we install the equipment and train the staff on how to use their new device. This allows staff and technicians to properly operate equipment and provide better patient care."

Biomed Plus developed its own web-based equipment management software custom-built to their requirements. This allows them to track equipment history and maintain inspection schedules to meet all accreditation agency requirements. Best of all, their customers can log in, view their equipment inventory, submit work orders and track the repair process. Unfortunately, sometimes equipment failures occur. When repairs are needed, Biomed Plus restores to like-new condition as much as possible. Older models can be a challenge as manufacturers discontinue equipment and parts are no longer available. Their national network, in conjunction with a warehouse of obsolete equipment, aptly titled “the boneyard,” allows them to repair devices that might otherwise have to be replaced. So instead of discarding broken or unused devices, customers can depend on reputable repairs thus saving money. With pride, James stands behind the company's motto “service in the spirit of excellence”—and they mean it. The company's primary goal is to ultimately serve their customers with integrity and complete satisfaction. With more than 27 years of experience in the industry, customers can expect the highest level of professionalism to properly inspect, test and repair equipment backed with quality assurance. Biomed Plus is located at 18175 Old Covington Highway in Hammond. For more information call 985-345-0319, email biomedplusllc@gmail.com or visit biomedplus.us. Sophisticated Woman | April 2019

Ceasar's Ristorante: An Authentic Italian Experience A BRIGHT BLUE building with fresh flowers and herbs in the front garden sits near the Lake Pontchartrain shore and unassumingly houses a feast for the senses. Patrons are enamored with the smell of freshly baked bread, lively chatter layered with native Italian, the feel of crisp linen tablecloths, flickering candles next to brimming wine glasses—and best of all, the taste of authentic regional Italian cuisine. The Italian is spoken by proprietors Robbie and her husband for whom the restaurant is named, Ceasar. Ceasar explains, “Authentic regional cuisine isn’t what you find at most local Italian restaurants. Our menu is different because it represents all the regions of Italy, not just one.” Their dishes are inspired by generations-old recipes including the classic Milanese dish of real veal ossobuco with risotto that was passed down from their mothers in Bellagio in northern Italy. There’s also pasta carbonara from Rome; a lump crabmeat cocktail called granseola popular in Venice; caponatta, a Sicilian favorite; mussels and clams, a traditional Puglia dish—and the list goes on. After 11 years on the Northshore, Ceasar’s popularity continues to grow. He attributes that success to a few things. The food is first, making bread and pasta from scratch and using only the best and freshest ingredients. His new location near the foot of the Causeway in Mandeville has proved convenient for locals, commuters and a growing number of patrons from the Southshore. “It’s just as easy for people to come right over 8

Sophisticated Woman | April 2019

the bridge from Metairie as it is for them to go into the French Quarter for a great meal.” And Ceasar keeps it upbeat and interesting with live music on Wednesdays, ossobuco nights on Thursdays, and Sunday evening hours when many others are closed. Ceasar shares his knowledge and passion for food and wine with regular cooking demonstrations culminating in a delicious meal and wine pairing. His guests are immersed in authenticity from the couple’s recipes to their banter that’s a mixture of heavily accented English intertwined with full-on Italian. Ceasar’s favorite wine? Barberra. Why? He says, “Because I love reds and it’s a sentimental favorite because I grew up with it.” There are always a variety of Italian wines on his list from the popular Super Tuscans to the less well-known but equally fine offerings of regions such as Piedmont, Lombardy and Umbria. Robbie and Ceasar aim to please and offer an “American Italian” menu section including, yes, meatballs. But Robbie encourages trying something different and is proud to share her heritage with guests. “Our prosciutto is aged over 600 days and paired in an appetizer with mozzarella. We do a wonderful beef carpaccio and, of course, our tuna tartar is fresh and delicious. And you must save room for the homemade tiramisu or amaretto mousse.” Ceasar’s Ristorante is located at 408 N. Causeway Boulevard in Mandeville. For more information, call 985-951-2626 or visit ceasarsristorante.net.

Northshore Lending Group: Helping Pave the Path to Home Ownership IN 2006, AFTER graduating college at Nicholls State University and working in customer service at Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Crystal Reese was hired into her first position in the mortgage industry with HSBC bank. Times were tough in the mortgage industry between 2006 and 2008 when the market crashed. Sitting at home one evening watching the news, she learned that HSBC mortgage division was closing all of their offices around the entire U.S., so she no longer had a job. Over the next few years, underwriting became even more difficult as most companies were struggling to remain open. Through the changes and closures, Crystal was learning all the ins and outs of the mortgage industry and programs that were needed to be able to help local families make their dreams come true. She decided in June 2018 to venture out and open her own mortgage brokerage firm making it her goal to help as many clients in the community to find their perfect home. Northshore Lending Group (NLG) is a locally owned and operated Louisiana company serving the community. The team at NLG has over 20 years of combined experience in the mortgage industry. Through their commitment to excellent service, competitive rates, hassle-free underwriting and quick turn-around times, NLG has become a trusted, leading mortgage provider to thousands of satisfied new, repeat and referred clients.

Commitment to service is their top priority. When working with one of their licensed mortgage loan officers, clients are working with a trusted and trained professional who will meet their goals and treat them as individuals—not a number—as is found with many larger institutions. NLG understands that needs are specific to unique situations and provides the products, resources and qualified staff to ensure that all mortgages are tailor-fit for all clients. NLG offers a wide variety of loan products ranging from conventional and Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac, FHA, USDA-Rural Development to VA fixed rates, 7/1 and 5/1 ARMS, Rehabilitation Loans and Construction Loans. When working with NLG, rest assured that through long-established, quality relationships with a wide array of major investors, they have the mortgage products to meet needs and provide the best possible rates at the best possible terms with the best possible service. So whether the need is purchasing a new home or investment property, or refinancing a current mortgage, Northshore Lending Group paves the way to successful home ownership. Crystal Reese NLMS# 198358, Northshore Lending Group NMLS# 1765847 is located at 800 N. Causeway Blvd. Ste. 2B in Mandeville. For more information call 985-231-2443 or visit nlgloans.com. Spirit Professionals: Winning by Building Character and Skills SPIRIT CAN MEAN one thing in the arena of cheerleading and another in the development of a young person, but at Spirit Professionals, home of the Spirit Xplosion All Star Cheerleaders, the two are definitely intertwined. Their focus is to build champions in the sport of competitive cheerleading and in life by fostering the values of teamwork, selfconfidence, a competitive spirit, leadership, respect for others, fair play, good sportsmanship, humility, integrity, self-discipline and strong personal character. All members are offered the possibility of reaching their highest potential in a safe and state-of-the-art training environment. Owner and CEO William Yeates says, “Our training philosophy is that our greatest success comes not by focusing on the end result of winning, but rather by focusing on the daily process of hard work and dedication to all our values. We measure success not only by victories at competitions but also by the personal character our members build and demonstrate on a daily basis.” In keeping with their dedication to developing all their students’ talents regardless of their current skill level, training programs offer many options. Their locations in Hammond and Madisonville offer individual instruction, team classes and summer camps. Individual fall and spring instruction sessions require no tryouts and are geared for those interested in the sport but not interested in being on a team. For those seeking the benefits of group participation, the dynamic training center offers several options. Non-competitive novice teams do not require tryouts, so everyone

makes a team, but students are evaluated for proper level placement. These exhibition teams are a great choice for those that don’t have the time, financial resources or haven’t yet developed the skills to be on a competitive team. Exhibition Teams are taught routines and skills, but only perform rather than compete. All Star Competitive Prep Teams are also open to all students, only requiring placement evaluation. This option is a great introduction to the sport of all star competitive cheer. Athletes aged four through 19 learn new skills, develop a sense of what it means to work together as a team for a common goal, and develop a sense of pride and sportsmanship while making life-long friendships. Routines have elements of tumbling, stunting, jumping, and dance skills set to music. All Star Elite offers five levels of competitive teams with each level having skill requirements to make a team. And while each USASF certified coach focuses on the journey and development of each student, Spirit Professionals delivers winning teams also. Yeates is proud to announce, “So far this year, three Elite Spirit Xplosion teams— Ignite, Fire Crackers and Blitz—have earned the right to compete at The Summit All Star Cheerleading Championships in May at Walt Disney World in Orlando, with a few more expected to qualify.” Spirit Professionals has locations at 210 Hewitt Rd. in Hammond and at 610 Deer Cross Court in Madisonville. The Origins and Symbolic Meaning of Easter Egg Hunts WRITTEN BY JAN WINDHORST

FROLICKING THROUGH THE grass for brightly decorated eggs has always been one of the most memorable Easter traditions, but what is the history behind the Easter egg hunt? Like many of the holiday's best-known customs, the egg hunt dates back thousands of years. The word "Easter" is thought to come from the Teutonic goddess of springtime Eostre, who was commonly associated with rabbits and to their connection with fertility. Early Germanic cultures believed that Eostre and her egg-laying rabbits heralded the beginning of spring. Easter eggs and Easter egg hunts are largely a pagan tradition and though its roots aren’t entirely clear, it is believed that egg hunts date back to the 1700’s. The Pennsylvania Dutch believed in an egg-laying hare called Oschter Haws. Folklore has it that this rabbit laid eggs in the grass and children were encouraged to build nests for it to lay in with hopes to search for the eggs it left behind. Oschter Haws eventually became the Easter Bunny, who is known for the tradition of creating nests—or in the modern day, baskets—and searching for his presents hidden around. The egg has been a symbol of life and rebirth for thousands of years and came to represent the resurrection of Jesus Christ. In fact, Easter eggs were traditionally dyed red to symbolize his blood. The hard shell of the egg represents the sealed Tomb of Christ, and cracking the shell represents Jesus’ resurrection from the dead. Moreover, historically, Christians would abstain from eating eggs and meat during Lent, and Easter was the first chance to eat eggs after a long period of abstinence. Today, Easter is a celebration of the end of Lent, a 40-day period in which many Christians give up certain vices or habits they find pleasurable. No matter what traditions you celebrate, Easter is a time for spring, renewal and rejoicing with family, friends and loved ones.

cover story

Blazing the Trail: Generations of Strength and Love WRITTEN BY KIM BERGERON PHOTOS BY STEVE RANDON

IN THE HEART of downtown Covington, a trio of mother, daughter and granddaughter serve as a powerful example of keeping the word “family” in family law practice. Collectively, Mary Beoubay Petruccelli, Tracy Ann Petruccelli, and Kristen Jeanne Pouey constitute the three-generation firm bringing legal representation and services to the community. The quaint, residential exterior of the building, designed by Tracy’s husband Richard Pouey, exemplifies the iconic style of the city’s historic district, though the building offers much more than a pleasant facade. When stepping through the front door, clients are embraced with an energy that’s a potent blend of empowerment, nurturing, focus, and drive. This dynamic trio’s story begins with matriarch Mary Beoubay Petruccelli, who grew up in Uptown New Orleans. Following her graduation from Fortier High School in 1955, she worked for a decade as a secretary at Loyola University. In 1963, she married Luca Petruccelli and the couple moved to Chalmette. Their only daughter, Tracy, was born a year later. Then tragedy struck. Just three years and three months after Mary and Luca had married, he passed away, leaving her to raise her 22-month-old daughter alone. The grieving widow was understandably uncertain as to what she should do next. After much soul searching, she made the decision to complete her college degree. Over the next four years, she attended night school at Loyola University earning her undergraduate degree in 1969. Then she set her sights even higher—a law degree. She was a woman on a mission, determined to provide a good life for her daughter. However, there were cynics who doubted her, including one of her undergraduate professors.“You have to remember, this was the 1960s, at a time women aspired to be law clerks,” she says. “He told me the most I could hope to be was a ghostwriter.” With a sly smile, she adds, “He was wrong.” In 1973, after several more years of night classes at Loyola Law School, Mary earned her Juris Doctor degree. Of the 80 law students in her class, only five were women. Her remarkable accomplishments opened the door for both her daughter and granddaughter. In 1985, Tracy earned her undergraduate degree and in 1988 her Juris Doctor, both from Loyola. Kristen followed suit, earning her undergraduate degree from Tulane in 2014 and her Juris Doctor from Loyola in 2017. It was the first time in the one hundred year history of Loyola Law School that three generations of women had earned their Juris Doctors in its halls. During the commencement ceremony, Mary and Tracy joined Kristen on the stage for the conferring of Kristen’s degree. “It was one of my proudest moments ever,” said Tracy. “I always knew Mama was a powerful woman,” Tracy continued, “so even though others viewed her as a trailblazer, to me, that was just ‘normal.’ She was fearless and she taught me that I could do anything if I worked hard for it.” “It was absolutely incredible to grow up with two such amazing role models,” says Kristen. “I feel each of them is a powerful force in her own right. Anything men can do, Mom and Grammy can do better.” They beam. She smiles. Sophisticated Woman | April 2019 23

However the road to academic and professional achievement was not without its hardships. Like many who now call the Northshore “home,” this family was living in St. Bernard Parish in 2005, a place devastated by the storm that redefined life for so many. “We lost everything in Katrina—our social clubs, our friends and our church,” said Tracy. “Our family lived closely together on our own little compound of sorts. We lost all of that. It was heartbreaking.” The entire family—Mary, Tracy, Richard, and their children, Kristen and Trent—relocated to Covington. Kristen and Trent would eventually return to the Southshore to pursue higher education and are now neighbors in Uptown

New Orleans. Trent is in the final phases of obtaining his CPA license. At Loyola, Kristen carried on a family tradition: standing out from the crowd. She received five Asterisk Awards denoting the top student in a given class. She also served on the Loyola Law Review before graduating in the top 10 percent of her class. She also shared a tidbit of which many of her colleagues are unaware: her career choice of attorney was not her first option. “Because I was such a prolific reader and had such an insatiable thirst for knowledge, I initially was guided toward a career in medicine. I had planned to become a doctor, and Mom and Grammy were very supportive of my choice.” Around her sophomore year, Kristen realized that she enjoyed English and history more than sciences, and she became aware that medicine was not her calling. She

was initially reluctant to share that epiphany with her mother, not knowing what response she would receive. Of course, Tracy assured her daughter that no matter which career path Kristen chose, her family would support her. “But secretly, I always knew she was going to be an attorney,” smiled Tracy. “I just had to let her find her own way.” Citing the importance of a well-rounded education, Kristen says she doesn’t regret the time she dedicated to studying medicine. The former psychology major says those studies have been a tremendous asset in her work. “So much of what we do in family law is based as much in psychology as it is in law,” she says. But the law isn’t the only passion these three ladies share. They can sum up the other in two words: Mardi Gras. Each of the ladies has reigned as queen of a Mardi Gras Krewe. For Tracy, that honor has been bestowed upon her on four occasions. Her husband Richard and son Trent have both also reigned as King. “We just love the pomp and circumstance, the crowns, the royalty, the balls, as well as watching and participating in parades,” says Tracy. “We love the whole New Orleans tradition!” It’s a passion inherited from Mary, who never missed an opportunity to parade with a krewe from 1967 through 2005. These days, Mary is often content to take in the festivities from the family’s condo, conveniently located on the parade route. As for Covington, Mary says she loves the laid back pace of the community, while Tracy enjoys the myriad events that take place throughout the year, noting the concerts at the Trailhead and the art walks as among her favorites. Kristen loves the quaint beauty of Downtown. Kristen’s scenic commute through Covington allows her to prepare for the busy days so common in her work. Like her grandmother and mother before her, Kristen is motivated to tirelessly serve her neighbors in their times of greatest need. “At the end of the day, our goal as family attorneys is to work to ensure that our clients don’t need us anymore,” says Kristen. “Because for our clients, this isn’t just about their case. It’s their life.” Petruccelli Law Office, LLC is located at 425 W. 21st Avenue in Covington. For more information please visit petruccellilaw.com or call 985-867-8966. Get Ready For Summer!

Make a Clear Choice when Choosing Clear Aligners WRITTEN BY CHANTAL CAUSIN, DDS

IF YOU HAVE ever considered straightening your teeth with clear aligner therapy, there are certain things you need to know. Clear aligners are all the rage lately with companies such as Smile Direct Club, Invisalign and such, running ads all over the television and internet marketing directly to consumers. When reviewing such options, there are several things to consider. 1. Is the foundation of your teeth and gums stable enough for tooth movement? If a patient has undiagnosed or untreated gum or periodontal disease, tooth movement may lead to tooth loss. 2. Are your teeth cavity-free? Undiagnosed or untreated tooth decay or abscess (infection) could lead to pain or tooth loss during tooth movement which could alter the course of treatment. 3. Do you have a TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint) problem or TMD ( Temporomandibular Dysfunction)? These disorders can sometimes be exaggerated or made worse by certain tooth movements if not treated correctly. The American Dental Association highly discourages patients against any at-home dental treatments that are not supervised by a licensed dentist or orthodontist to prevent any potential harm. Clear aligner therapies such as Invisalign and other brands have successful outcomes in moving teeth and offer patients another option to get the smile they want, need and deserve. In some cases, it is a great option for children and teenagers as well. Digital technology is rapidly exploding and offering patients more precise tooth movements with clear aligner therapies. It is important that a trained dental professional supervise treatment to assure the best possible result and minimize any potential complications that may arise during treatment. There are many affordable options available. Consult with your dentist or orthodontist to see which treatment is tailored for you!

Sensible Meals: Waistlines Are Shrinking While Business Is Growing SENSIBLE MEALS IS continuing to take the south and nation by storm! It’s the fastest-growing and largest meal-prep company in the country, and it’s based here in our area. Creator Ingrid Rinck calls both Mandeville and New Orleans home, as well as the corporate headquarters for her over 1,200 employees. The 38-year-old entrepreneur is a seasoned personal trainer with over 20 years of experience in the health and fitness industries. When her son was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, a disease that rendered him insulin dependent, Rinck poured herself into learning everything she could about nutrition and controlling health through food. She altered her family’s diet and lost weight herself. Eating healthy, controlled portions, Rinck quickly lost the weight she gained while pregnant with her third child —and an additional 45 pounds, losing 100 pounds total in only 10 months. Her portion-controlled meals led to the creation of Sensible Meals, which now helps tens of thousands of people lose weight, gain back their confidence and reach optimal health. Sensible Meals boasts countless testimonials from clients, many who have faced challenges such as diabetes, PCOS and heart disease and have tried every diet. They are amazed at what portion control has done for their health and they continue to meet and exceed their goals through the Sensible Meals program. All diets stem from the same fundamental calorie deficit, but this program gives clients built in cheat meals which keeps them on track towards reaching their goals. Rinck loves to show people that weight loss and health don’t have to be miserable and a constant task. It’s about doing it right most of the time and having fun some of the time. Her system is designed so clients don’t feel deprived or frustrated, and then quit. “We focus on moderation, not depriavation,” she stated. She hopes to inspire clients because she struggles with the same issues. “We’re not in the business to make anyone the next supermodel,” she stressed. “We’re all about being healthy, not perfect.” The program is affordable and the company offers live assistance 12 hours a day. Sensible Meals has received numerous awards since its founding. This year alone the company was named “Northshore’s Best”, Top Meal Prep, Top Weight-loss Company and Top Health Food. Ingrid has been named Entrepreneur of the Year, Louisiana’s Face of Weight Loss and Sophisticated Woman’s November “Enterprising Woman.” Her passion for helping people is as important to her as the success of her business. Rinck is a major sponsor of many charities including the Junior Diabetes Research Foundation and donates to children’s diabetes summer camps and medical supplies. Sensible Meals continues to grow locally, win awards and expand nationwide. With Ingrid’s leadership and business savvy, she is helping our local economy grow and waistlines shrink! Cypress Pointe Growth A VISION FOR TODAY AND TOMORROW A NEW TWO STORY, state of the art, class A, medical office and outpatient building with covered patient drop off and pick up is currently being built adjacent to Cypress Pointe Hospital in Hammond, HOSPITAL Louisiana. The building is approximately 35,000 square feet and connects to Cypress Pointe Hospital with completion scheduled for December of 2019. Catalyst Healthcare Real Estate, a Pensacola based healthcare real estate company, is the developer on the 10 million dollar investment project which offers custom designed suites to meet each tenant’s specific need with generous allowances allocated towards the design and construction of the tenant improvements. Glenda Dobson, president and chief executive officer stated, “Currently, the physicians working at Cypress Pointe Hospital have offices all over the community. The medical office building will offer them closer accessibility next to the hospital so they can provide comprehensive patient care in one location.” “As we have more physicians wanting office space in Hammond, we will have office space available for them on our Cypress campus,” Dobson said. There is room on the property to build another building if there is a need for more office space in the future. Eighty percent of the MOB is currently leased, with an Urgent Care and a retail pharmacy as anchors to the first floor. Other office space being built out are Ortho-spine and Orthopedic suites and Cypress Pointe Pain Management on the second floor. There is also interest in Physical Therapy and Behavioral Health for suites in the complex.

A MASTER PLAN A master plan for the Cypress Pointe campus is being done in anticipation of more growth in the future. Part of the need for the master plan is the addition of a hotel on the Cypress Pointe Hospital campus. They are in the development stages of the hotel that would be a name-brand hotel that is open to anyone needing to stay in the Hammond area. There is no major hotel in an area that has two sports parks, an airport, and Interstate 12 nearby. The hotel would also provide a destination location for patients’ families to stay overnight if they are from out of town or out of state. “We want to make this an all-encompassing medical complex,” said Dr. Chad Domangue, Member Manager of Cypress Pointe Hospital and a Board Certified Neurologist and Pain Management Specialist. The medical office building is the first step of the overall master plan as it will strategically benefit the hospital by providing a convenient one-stop shop for physicians and patients.

OTHER AMENITIES As part of the overall master plan, other mixed use developments will be incorporated into the Cypress Pointe Hospital campus footprint with unique amenities targeted to the specific Cypress clientele. Restaurants will be needed to support the hotel traffic and other residential growth in the area. A 300-unit apartment complex and Providence Ridge, offering single-family move-in-ready homes, has also been developed east of the hospital campus.

THANK YOU TO ALL OF OUR CUSTOMERS FOR YOUR SUPPORT Lunch Served Tuesday–Saturday 11 a.m.–2 p.m. Cakes, Weddings, Cupcakes, Italian Cookies, King Cakes & Shipping

Financial Exploitation of the Elderly WRITTEN BY DOUG SUNSERI

FINANCIAL EXPLOITATION IS a fast-growing form of abuse of seniors and adults with disabilities. Financial exploitation commonly involves trusted persons in the life of the vulnerable seniors such as caretakers, family members, neighbors, friends and acquaintances, professionals and bank employees. The number and complexity of financial abuse to elderly has grown significantly over the past decade. Recent research indicates the following: • One in nine seniors report being abused, neglected or financially exploited in the past twelve months. • Elder abuse is vastly under reported. Only one in 44 cases of financial abuse is ever reported. • Abused seniors are three times more likely to die and four times more likely to go into a nursing home. • 90% of abusers are friends or family members. • Financial abuse victims will often seek Medicaid due to depleted resources. • Cognitive and/or physical impairment makes victims more vulnerable to financial abuse. Financial exploitation by strangers include: lottery & sweepstakes scams, home repair/traveling con men, charity scams, utility company scams, roof repair, yard work, home repair scams, telemarketing scams and accompanying threats. Common scams by “professionals” include: predatory lending, annuity sales, investment/ securities schemes, internet phishing, identity theft and Medicare scams. Some common methods by which family

Tennis Elbow: Treatment and Prevention

DOMNICA FOTINO, MD - Board Certified Internal Medicine

|

LISA PATE, ND - Naturopathic Physician

WRITTEN BY PAUL JONES, PHYSICAL THERAPIST

TENNIS ELBOW IS

a painful and often difficult to treat condition that affects people in all walks of life (not just tennis players). Some sports that are associated with tennis elbow are CrossFit, weightlifting, tennis (of course), baseball and golf. You will notice I say “associated.” This is because these sports may not be entirely to blame for this malady. There are other factors such as poor technique, badly suited equipment, genetics, poor conditioning and also use of some types of medication. Tennis elbow starts with damage to the tendon on the outside of the elbow, known as the common extensor origin. It’s referred to as “common” because it is where most of the muscles that extend the wrist and fingers are anchored. Damage in this area causes weakness and pain with gripping and lifting activities and can even interfere with lighter tasks such as driving or writing. Pain in the elbow at night is another common complaint with this condition. Physical therapy for tennis elbow is based around the body’s own ability to heal itself. PT techniques stimulate the area around the tendon to create collagen fibers or scar tissue to repair the damaged tendon while at the same time conditioning the scar so that it forms a strong repair. Further muscular conditioning and exercise return the patient to their chosen sport or activities and prevent re-injury. Your therapist will also require you to do some homework in the form of stretching and strengthening exercises. So how about prevention? 1. Ease into any new activity. Give yourself time to learn good skills and your body time to condition to new activities. Get proper instruction. 2. Hire a coach or a pro to teach you the right techniques and training programs, don’t try to re-invent the wheel. 3. If your sport requires equipment, invest in the right equipment for your size, age and skill level.

Paul Jones is a physical therapist and owner of Jones Physical Therapy with locations in Madisonville and Hammond. For more information, visit jonesphysicaltherapy.com or call 985-792-5996 in Madisonville or 985-549-1900 in Hammond.

Protecting Your Pets in the Summer Heat WRITTEN BY KAITLYN SEILER, NORTHSHORE HUMANE SOCIETY

WARM WEATHER IS setting in. After months of chilly days, we are now in for some sunshine and summer fun. As you prepare for vacations and fun in the sun, it is important to keep pets healthy with warm weather preparations. Pets rely on you to keep them safe, especially from preventable injuries and sickness. No pet should suffer from exposure to extreme weather, and extreme heat can be just as deadly as freezing cold. Keep summer safe for pets by protecting them from the heat. Summer is a fun time to spend outdoors. Dogs and cats want to explore just as much as you do, but they

Ponchatoula: Small Town. Big Happenings. WRITTEN BY BOB ZABBIA, MAYOR OF PONCHATOULA

depend on their owners to keep their days safe. In extremely hot temperatures, limit your pet’s time outside. If you do let your dog or cat stay outside for an extended period of time, you must provide shelter and water sources. Shade from the sun and clean water are absolutely vital to keep pets safe in the heat. Most importantly, never leave your pet trapped in a hot car. Pets can suffocate or die of a heat stroke very quickly. In addition, stay on top of your dog’s heartworm, flea and tick medication. Heartworms are spread by mosquitoes which are especially bad over the summer. Fleas and ticks are not only painful but can spread deadly diseases. Protect your pet from heat dangers to keep your furry family members happy and healthy all summer long. Be sure to update your pets' medicine and keep up-to-date on vaccinations before traveling. For more information, contact the Northshore Humane Society at 985-892-7387 or visit northshorehumane.org.

THE QUAINT CITY of Ponchatoula has a small town feel with big city amenities. We are rich in culture with our outdoor public art, our theater and our antique, art and collectibles galleries. As part of the city’s 2019–2020 budget, the city will create a Downtown Development District to assist in business growth and explore the availability of grants and low interest loans to assist shops in making improvements not only to their buildings, but also to their business plans. Ponchatoula continues to enjoy a healthy financial status. Over the past 15 years, we have seen the city’s assessed valuation increase by 70% as a result of residential, commercial and industrial investments made in our community. Sales tax collections also have shown steady growth as a result of the numerous retail businesses that have located here. Behind the scenes, the City has had numerous capital outlay improvement projects completed during recent years and continues to develop others. Most of these projects have been made possible with matching grants from federal and state agencies. We invite you to visit Ponchatoula to enjoy our downtown shopping and delicious restaurants. On April 12-14, the city will celebrate its 48th annual Strawberry Festival in Memorial Park. This is the largest free festival in the state and features our local strawberries. Enjoy great food, music stages, rides and entertainment. Our award-winning Strawberry Festival Parade rolls Saturday, April 13 at 9:30 am. Before you head home, be sure to take a selfie in front of our 9-foot strawberry in our new 90-car parking lot on Hickory Street.
