SW: What is your ideal day off? JS: A lot of variety! Because I am a creature of habit
during working hours, I like to switch it up when I unwind. Some days I enjoy outdoor activities such as kayaking with friends, gardening, working on my house or an impromptu pool day! Other days, I like to stay in bed watching Netflix and not leave my house. I’m a workaholic so most days off I am usually in recovery mode.

I GREW UP
with a myriad of pets, dogs, cats, hamsters, mice, rabbits, chickens, budgerigars and ducks. My siblings and I could never talk our parents into buying a donkey even though we had stables on our property; now I understand my parents’ reluctance to indulge that whim! We all can remember our first pet; mine was a black Spaniel named Jet. We learned so much from having pets, from unconditional love to the responsibility of pet ownership, to dealing with the loss of a beloved pet. This month we showcase some Northshore Vets who share their areas of expertise. We get some advice from experts and learn about being responsible for the welfare of community cats. I spent a hot July afternoon with our Enterprising Woman, Jade Skluzacek, who has taken her extensive worldwide background in fashion and opened up Stella Dallas, a boutique in Mandeville. On another equally hot July afternoon we met up with adorable little models who enjoyed playing at Bogue Falaya Park whilst modeling fashions picked out by Patty Beal from local retail stores. We were invited into the home of a local businessman, Greg Lala, where we fell in love with the lush tropical oasis in his backyard. Over the course of a couple of days, waiting for that perfect light, our Home Photographer, Timothy Dunford, shot some stunning photographs that we share in this issue. Our Foodie and Friends writer, Jan Robert, pays homage to that wonderful summer fruit, the peach, and shares a Panzanella Peach Salad recipe that I can’t wait to try. As always, you can find more recipes, photographs, blogs and behind the scenes online at sophisticatedwoman.com. Enjoy the issue,

health Grey Matter Matters AS I WRITE THIS article on my laptop with the electricity off and the power company’s computer system down, times like these remind me of our dependence on conveniences at our fingertips. In medicine, our dependence is even greater upon devices which were inconFinal ceivable only a few years ago. In the specialty of dermatology, despite incredible advances in the understanding and treatment of skin disorders and cancers, the greatest tool in diagnosis remains in between our ears. In this sense, we are somewhat of an anachronism by still relying on the collective wisdom of those who came before us and on our own experience rather than electromagnetic images, scopes, scans and chemistries. I was recently reminded of this when I ran into an elderly pediatrician who in 1980 just after I’d finished my dermatology residency referred to me a five-year-old boy with hair loss. After examining the child, I called the doctor and told his disbelieving ears that the boy may have, of all things, syphilis! When a blood test came back negative, I stubbornly insisted that the lab re-do the test in a more refined way. Sadly, the result was positive. Needless to say, from that point forward, the pediatrician referred many more patients for years to come.
In dermatology especially, there is no substitute for a provider’s accredited training and experience. This same diagnostic theme has been repeated countless times from the millionaire with an unusual case of leprosy to a cousin and a close friend who were not in the habit of getting spot checks and ultimately presented with fatal melanomas. In dermatology especially, there is no substitute for a provider’s accredited training and experience. The other important factor is making the appointment!

Personal Touch, Excellent Results CELEBRATING 20 YEARS IN BUSINESS
is quite the accomplishment. Rehab Dynamics Physical Therapy is doing just that and much more. Rehab Dynamics is proud to announce the opening of their second location on Hwy 22 to better serve the community. With two locations, they are now able to offer patients an appointment within 24 hours, with or without a physician’s referral. Crystal Ferris, owner and physical therapist, says, “Getting to therapy early on is really important, as research shows that the sooner you begin physical therapy, the quicker your recovery will be!” So what is it that makes Rehab Dynamics stand out? Crystal says, “Our greatest compliment that we can get is to have our past patients return for other injuries as well as to have them refer their friends and family! So, when thinking about what our next step will be, we always consider our patients first. ‘What’s best for our patients?’” With that in mind, the physical therapists at Rehab Dynamics take great pride in continuing their education. From certifications in dry needling, Graston, lymphedema, LSVT BIG (for patients with Parkinsons), manual therapy, and more, they are able to provide the most up to date treatment techniques in the physical therapy field. With well over 30 years of experience, Rehab Dynamics physical therapists leave a lasting
impression on their patients, providing treatment they need and care they deserve. From the second you walk into the doors of Rehab Dynamics, they make it a priority for all of their patients to feel at home and to give each patient the best care possible. Crystal states, “Patients may come in as a stranger but they leave as part of our family.” Each patient will receive that one–on–one experience with the patient being scheduled with the same therapist every visit. That way, they are able to assess progress and make any changes that may be necessary. With the combination of manual therapy, exercises designed specifically for you, and the latest modalities to decrease pain, it’s a sure fire bet that you will leave this facility feeling better. As a matter of fact, RD’s low back pain patients have improved 24 percent MORE than the national average. With recent legislation eliminating the requirement of a physician referral, people have more freedom than ever before in choosing the best rehabilitation facility for their needs. If you would like to see a doctor first, that is great too. The team at Rehab Dynamics says, “Please ask your doctor to send you to see us! We would love to give you the treatment you need and the care you deserve.”
“IF NOT FOR THEM I WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO WALK WITHOUT PAIN. I FEEL LIKE A NEW PERSON.” -KAREN • Celebrating 20 years in business • Two locations to serve you • Patients getting better results • Continued Education • One-on-one therapy • Over 30 years experience • Latest treatments and technology Rehab Dynamics, LLC 330 Falconer Drive Suite D Covington, LA 70433 985-871-7878 Crystal C. begin the 2016-2017 school term after their summer break. But the truth is that school never really ends for educators, does it? Educators often meet in conferences prior to the start of school to brainstorm and develop strategies for classroom management and discipline. In the past, students who disrupted class, or “cut up,” could be assigned extra work, such as writing lines or staying after school to clean chalkboards or dust erasers. Now the trend in education is for teachers to examine themselves to discover what they might have done to avoid triggering students. Trigger is an interesting word, as it implies that the recipient of the inappropriate action is responsible for the unruly behavior and not the offender. Sometimes warnings of potential danger are obvious. Students who “act out” cut other people down and may injure others. Students who “act in” usually cut themselves down and may physically cut themselves in places unlikely to be noticed, such as under the waistband of trousers or between their toes. These students, typically adolescent girls, often go unnoticed. Why do they cut? What they tell me is, “I was upset, and I had all these feelings inside me. I didn’t know what to do and cutting made me feel better, because it let some of the bad feelings out of me.” What “acting out” and “acting in” students have in common is not using appropriate ways to express their emotions. Parents, you are your children’s primary educators and can be part of the solution. Be vulnerable and talk to your children about times you might have handled a situation better by using different words or actions. Be present (ball fields, dance recitals, wherever your children are) in your children’s lives. Cultivate a relationship with your children’s teachers. More than ever before, parents, educators and students need to recall those words that Johann Wolfgang von Goethe wrote to his mother, A.F. Oeser, in 1768, “Instruction does much, but encouragement everything.”

Animal Medical Center WRITTEN BY JILL WILLIE PHOTOS BY TOM BALLANTINE
DOCTORS LORI AND DAN DANIEL
were newly married when they opened the doors at the Animal Medical Center (AMC) in Covington. As the couple began building their practice, they also began building their family. From toddler to teen, the Daniel children were a common sight in the halls of the clinic. All these years later, daughter Kristen is back at the practice—managing the office’s staff and scheduling the numerous dogs and cats the center sees on a daily basis. Joining Drs. Lori and Dan are three talented veterinarians. While each boast impressive resumes, Dr. Dan said it is their own personal stories that make them such incredible vets. Dr. Katie Bannerman may be the newest veterinarian to the practice, but she’s the one with the longest history. Beginning as an intern while at Mandeville High, Dr. Katie returned to AMC as a pre-vet student throughout her college career. Following seven years in practice in New Orleans and one in Mandeville, Dr. Katie returned to her roots at the Animal Medical Center earlier this year. Dr. Paige Massey’s calling to protect and heal animals was never more evident than in the weeks and months after Hurricane Katrina. In addition to working with St. Bernard Parish to get its Animal Shelter back up and running, she traveled there on a weekly basis to spay and neuter adoption pets. Seeing the tremendous
need in the area, Dr. Paige also donated time to help set up a working health care facility for residents. Dr. Alissa Whitney graduated from MIT and taught science at Northlake Christian School for seven years before deciding to go to vet school. Combining her love of teaching with her love of veterinary medicine, Dr. Alyssa helped develop many of the classes and curriculum for the Northshore Vet Tech School. She also volunteers at Dixon Penitentiary, where she helped set up a no-kill animal shelter and pet therapy program for inmates. Dr. Dan said the unsung heroes at AMC are its team of talented vet techs. Recognizing the lack of trained Registered Veterinary Techs (RVTs) in the area, he worked with the Louisiana College system and Dean Sharon Hornsby to develop a local curriculum. With the largest class (44) in program history, Dan said he’s proud of the part he’s played in making the profession better. “A well trained RVT can impact a practice in the same way that nurses can impact physician offices and hospitals. They have certainly contributed to improving the quality of care at our own clinic. It’s a great addition to our family.”
At Animal Medical Center, we treat your pets like the valued family members they are. Animal Medical Center is proud to serve the Northshore area with an exceptional office and support staff as well as five Doctors of Veterinary Medicine. • Dr. Danny Daniel • Dr. Lori S. thshore PET TALK: with our Nor veterinarians What are some healthy treats I can feed my pet? Fruits and vegetables are healthy, low calorie treats that many pets enjoy. Green beans, carrots, bananas, apples and watermelon (no seeds) are great snack options for most pets. Always consult your veterinarian first especially if your pet has an underlying illness. Do not feed grapes, raisins, or onions. For those wanting to feed a more “meaty” snack, I recommend Primal Pet Food Treats. Break treats into several pieces to control and limit the total amount of treats your pet receives per day. Love them and feed them healthy treats in a healthy way!

Why is integrative medicine important for my pet’s vibrant health? If you are interested in a long and healthy life for your pet, integrative medicine is the key. Integrative medicine focuses on a balanced moist diet, exercise, Chinese herbs, Tui Na (medical massage) and acupuncture. Acupuncture produces a beneficial physiological response. It can naturally provide pain relief, stimulate the immune and nervous systems, increase microcirculation, and decrease inflammation. Acupuncture will keep your pet’s body balanced, and a balanced body can heal itself. Instead of treating problems as they occur, integrative medicine focuses on prevention. The days of dry kibble and a pill to fix a problem are over. Join us.

Why is my pet always itching? I don’t see any fleas! Fleas are everywhere! Just because you can’t see them doesn’t mean they aren’t there. Your veterinarian can help you to determine if your pet has a sensitivity to flea saliva, based on where your pet is itching or scratching. There are several new flea prevention products available, including a pill that last 3 months, a collar that lasts 8 months, and monthly topicals. Your pet also may be suffering from food allergies or inhaled environmental allergies, known as atopy. Consult your vet before changing foods! There is also a new daily tablet that decreases your pet’s sensitivity to allergens and helps to relieve the itching.

Does my pet really need to be on heartworm prevention? It rarely goes outside. Because our winters are relatively mild, heartworm season is year-round in Louisiana and all pets are at risk. Heartworms are transmitted by mosquitoes, which can easily sneak in the house to bite your pet. Anyone concerned about the idea of administering a parasiticide every month should keep in mind that the products we use to prevent the disease are much milder than the one we use to treat it. Untreated heartworm disease is 100 percent fatal and the “slow kill” method of treatment has been shown to be unreliable.

Should my dog be on a grain-free diet for allergies? Most dogs are not allergic to grains. There is a less than 1 percent population of dogs allergic to soy only, but the majority of dogs have issues with protein in the form of chicken, pork, or beef. Just because an over the counter food says they exclude these proteins from their diet yielding a hypo-allergenic diet, they are processed through the same processor as the allergic proteins. If your dog is food allergic, your furry friend should be on a reputable veterinary exclusive hypoallergenic diet—veterinarian recommended only.

Part of the Family
Maher Animal Hospital WRITTEN BY MARIA D’ANTONIO
of Covington since 1982 lies Maher Animal Hospital. This fatherdaughter veterinary team yearns to do more than just treat pets for illness or injury but treat all the animals that walk through the hospital doors as part of the family. “It’s really humbling to work in the practice he built,” said Dr. Katie Maher. After moving to the Northshore to start the animal hospital, her father, Dr. Rusty Maher, set the stage to make an ordinary animal hospital truly a place for families. Dr. Katie, born and raised in Covington, started working with her father once she graduated from Louisiana State University’s School of Veterinary Medicine. While her father never pushed her to become a veterinarian, he nonetheless inspired not only her passion for veterinary medicine, but also two of her cousins to become vets. “He’s a really big influence on our family for sure,” she commented. With her education on the most recent techniques and technology, coupled with her father’s abundant experience, the two are able to provide top notch care for patients in a new way.
“We consult on almost every case,” Dr. Katie explained. “You may see only one of us, but most of the time we are putting our heads together behind closed doors.” Not only do both veterinarians work together to ensure the best treatment for pets, but new technology also assists in transforming the way the doctors diagnose diseases. “We have an ultrasound machine which has really changed the practice,” Dr. Katie commented. This, as well as their digital x-ray and in-house bloodwork machines, has helped to make clear and quick diagnoses. Dr. Katie went to high school at Saint Scholastica Academy before attending the University of Georgia and graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in genetics. When she’s not tending to patients in the hospital, she’s busy with her own pets—Mona, a lab; two rescues, Gertrude and Little Bit, and her cat, Prince. “People’s pets are more than just animals. They are beloved family members,” she said. It is this attitude toward patient care that has really helped the practice to stand out. While technology and the doctors’ teamwork on most cases have certainly had parts to play
in this successful business, Dr. Katie pointed out that what really makes the hospital special is their approach to care. “One of things we really pride ourselves on is we treat every animal that walks into our clinic as if they were our own,” she explained. In this way, the Maher Animal Hospital family grows with each new pet that walks through its doors. Maher Animal Hospital is located at 1031 S. Tyler Street in Covington. NESTLED IN THE HEART
From No One’s Cat to Everyone’s Cat!
Community Cats
12 Sophisticated Woman | August 2016
IT IS ESTIMATED
there are more than 1.5 billion cats in the United States. Almost half of those are stray, free roaming or feral. While more than 85 percent of pet cats are spayed or neutered, only about 2 percent of free roaming cats are spayed and neutered accounting for 80 percent of all newborn kittens annually! Considering cats can reproduce at 4 to 5 months of age and can also have as many as three litters per year, it’s no wonder there are so many cats on the street and in shelters! We simply cannot adopt our way out of the situation. Unfortunately, more than 70 percent of cats that enter shelters are killed. The outlook is even more dismal for feral cats or free-roaming “community cats” that are not suitable for adoption into homes. Virtually 100 percent of these cats that enter shelters are killed. This ineffective, costly and inhumane approach to managing free roaming community cats has been proven not to reduce the number of cats as other unaltered cats move in to the territory and again breed to capacity. This outdated “catch and kill” method is being replaced steadily with more progressive community cat programs based on the trap-neuter-return (TNR) method of population management. This has proven to be the most effective at reducing the numbers of these cats, reducing shelter admissions and shelter deaths, saving taxpayers’ money and providing a public health benefit to the community. TNR stabilizes and eventually reduces cat populations and makes them good neighbors. It also offers shelters and community members a more humane, guilt free approach to managing cat overpopulation in a community. In fact, a national survey recently showed 81 percent of people believe fixing and leaving a community cat outdoors is preferable to having him or her caught and euthanized! CATNIP Foundation at Big Sky Ranch is committed to changing these numbers and advocates for a trap-neuter-return approach to humanely managing community cats. Embracing this solution to end overpopulation and needless killing, free-roaming cats are trapped, spayed or neutered and returned to their original locations. Kittens and cats that can be socialized are adopted into homes as companions and pets. In unfortunate cases where neither of these is possible, appropriate, alternative homes as “working cats” are found through our “Rescue Ranches” Barn Cat/Working Cat program. While this may seem like a new concept, we can trace the first instances of cats living in and providing service to communities as far back as 10,000 years ago. In the early days of agriculture, cats preyed on the rodents attracted to stored grain. Over the centuries, cats came to form mutually beneficial relationships with people and became especially prized as mousers. Cats boarded ships from Europe tagging along with Christopher Columbus, the settlers at Jamestown and aboard the Mayflower. Cats continued their service as mousers throughout history—even serving as official employees of the United States Postal Service as late as the early 20th century. Today we find “working cats” anywhere rodent control might be needed—barns, farms, restaurants, wharfs, warehouses, breweries or even your backyard chicken coop. If you would like to save a couple of lives and put a trained mouser to work for you, contact us today to adopt your Working Cat!! Dr. Catherine Wilbert, CEO CATNIP Foundation at Big Sky Ranch CATNIP (Care And Treatment of Neglected and Indigent Pets) Foundation at Big Sky Ranch is a 501(c)3 non profit Animal Rescue, based in Folsom. 985-276-0270, bigskyranch.org, catnipfoundation@icloud.com.

When Words Can Hurt You
Peculiar In All The Best Ways
STICKS AND STONES…we
WRITTEN BY JO RIPOLL
all know the old adage. But when it comes to your digital reputation, words are powerful—and negative ones can cause a lot of damage. How can you protect what you’ve worked so hard to build up? Take control. First, make sure you’ve claimed your business listings on the review sites. The key ones are Google, Yelp, Facebook and Yahoo as well as industry-specific sites like Trip Advisor and Open Table. Once you’ve claimed your business, you can respond within the sites. Listen to the conversation. It’s critical to know what is being said about your business online. Monitor these sites either manually or through an automated review monitoring service. Some are even free. Setting up a Google Alert so you’re notified of online mentions is a good start. Respond. Whether reviews are positive or negative, it says a lot about your commitment to customer service when you reply to reviews. Keep it short, sweet and always courteous. Invite unhappy customers to contact you offline. This is not the platform to argue or plead your case. Tailor your response. The review sites have best-practice guidelines on responding to online criticism. Take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with them and follow the recommendations. Use feedback in training. Although criticism is sometimes hard to take, it may point out issues you didn’t know existed. Use what you learn to address problems and train employees. While you can’t get rid of negative reviews, how you handle them can mitigate their impact. People are impressed when they see your willingness to resolve problems. MISS PEREGRINE’S HOME FOR PECULIAR CHILDREN, by Ransom Riggs, is a quirky and mysterious debut novel for teens and adults, that will grab you from page one. Following the perspective of sixteen-year-old Jacob, readers embark on a journey of discovery. After a lifetime of hearing his grandfather’s outlandish stories accompanied by questionably real photographs, Jacob sees a vision of horror at the scene of his grandfather’s death that nobody else can see or believe. Told that his nightmares aren’t real and just a version of PTSD, Jacob delves into his grandfather’s past to learn the truth of the cryptic message his grandfather left him. A letter from “The Bird” takes Jacob and his father to a small island off the coast of Wales where Jacob finds the ruins of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. Jacob searches the abandoned house day after day until he finds what he didn’t know he was looking for. Suddenly led back in time, Jacob learns that the world is not as he believed it to be. All of his grandfather’s stories were true. The world is full of gifted people, known as Peculiars, and the horrors in his nightmares are real. Now, instead of fighting with his parents, Jacob and his new-found peculiar friends are fighting for their lives. Riggs seamlessly intertwines photographs and text to create this “peculiar” fantasy novel. With eerie imagery and intriguing characters, Miss Peregrine’s will keep you fascinated until the end.

CAN YOU BELIEVE that it is already August? Summer is nearly gone, but now is the hottest time of the year. Any time spent in the garden is surely better in the shade!! So why not make that shady garden area a place of real beauty and real COOL? Whenever I think of shade, I think of hostas. They will undoubtedly become one of your all-time favorite plants. Why? Because they are the perfect perennial!! Hostas are easy to grow, elegant in design, shade loving yet sun tolerant, come in a variety of colors and sizes, produce exotic flowers and get along easily with other plants in the shade garden. Where do I buy a hosta plant? Almost all yard and garden nurseries will carry them. They may only carry varieties known to do well in your area. No problem. That is a great way to start. Keep in mind that you will probably want more than one plant. You can plant them anytime during their growing season, which is spring through fall. You will want to make sure they are planted in rich, well-drained soil and given adequate water for a month or two after planting. This is especially important if planting in the summer months. Mulching hostas is a great idea to show them off and keep that moisture base evenly distributed. Once established, a hosta will mature in 3-6 years and produce the lushest foliage at this point. You will see beautiful long stems of flowers which can range in color from white to
lavender. You do not need to divide hostas, but after three years you may want to thin them out a bit to keep them from grossly overlapping. Remember, the leaves are the real glory of this shade lover. The darker the leaves, the more shade tolerant. Hostas with lighter leaves will tend to endure more sun-imbued spots. What problems might I have with hostas? Slugs love their showy leaves and may make them appear lace-like, which is not a good hosta look. If your shady areas have lots of slugs or snails, opt for hostas with thicker leaves as those pests prefer a softer chew! As the plants mature, the leaves will become thicker and this in itself may help. Also, the mulching will help keep the crawlers away as they prefer a smooth travel surface. Foliage will begin to die back when cold nights set in. Do not fear—it will return in the spring!! You can let the dying foliage stay around as extra cold weather protection or cut it back and add a little more mulch. I like to cut the dead away so that in spring there is a fresh new plant! Be careful when starting a hosta garden as they do tend to become an addiction!! So many to choose from and so many colors—you must google this amazing plant and see all the possibilities of making that shady garden spot the most beautiful place in your yard!! Stay COOL!! Email your gardening questions and comments to Lisa at shakeslyons@aol.com.
legal The Louisiana Notary Public WRITTEN BY RONDA M. GABB
IN THE OTHER 49 states, which are all common law, the main purpose of a Notary Public is to be an “official witness to a signature” by authenticating signatures for fraud deterrence. Rarely is any testing necessary to become a common law notary and the cost is usually minimal. All of the other states’ notary commissions expire, usually somewhere between three to five years. The Notary Public in Louisiana, the only civil law jurisdiction, is completely different from any other state. In addition to the powers of “authenticating signatures” above, the Louisiana Notary is also authorized to make Testaments (Wills), Acts of Donation, Deed Transfers, Matrimonial Contracts, Powers of Attorney, Limited Emancipations, Partitions, Affidavits of Small Succession, and so much more. In any other state you would need to be an attorney to draft the above acts. And, most importantly, in Louisiana your Notarial Commission is for life! Naturally, to have such broad authority, stringent testing is involved. Twice a year, on the first Saturday of June and December, the Notarial Examination is offered. The pass rate for a “first-time” examinee is extremely low. You can imagine how difficult the test is, and with good reason, as in any other state you would need to be an attorney to perform the above functions. How can you become a Notary? Go to the Louisiana Secretary of State’s (SOS) website at sos.la.gov and follow the “Notary” links. There is plenty of information on the process and what to expect on the
examination. My advice? Buy the La. SOS Notarial Study Guide and read it, cover-to-cover. It is a fantastic book on Notarial law and I use it often in my own law practice. If you enjoy it, then you may be ready to become a Louisiana lifetime Notary Public! Although no formal classroom instruction is required to sit for the exam, most examinees find that a Notarial Preparatory class is helpful. The SOS site will list all registered providers with the state, and their

Peaches and Cream WRITTEN BY JAN ROBERT
MY FAMILY HAD A TRADITION of eating fresh peaches with Pet milk or evaporated milk. Peaches and cream. You know what I’m talking about if you were part of the baby boom generation. Pet milk and mushroom soup were staples in the post WWII kitchens of the 50s. Remember those canned cling peaches that we were forced to eat in elementary school? Those sad excuses for peaches were typically floating in one of the little compartments on your three section plate with a faded maraschino cherry cap. I never understood until recently why they were called “cling.” I thought that it was a reference to the insipid, sticky canning juice. Guess again. Cling refers to the variety of peach. Cling peaches have a pit or stone that clings to the flesh as opposed to a freestone peach that has an easily removable stone. I didn’t know I even liked peaches until later in life when I was introduced to the perfectly ripe Chilton County, Alabama freestone peach. I am so grateful that the ladies from Cleckler Farms in Clinton, Alabama, home of these famous Chilton County peaches, drive to the Covington Farmer’s market every weekend throughout the summer. Even the varietal names of their sensuous peaches evoke strong
18 Sophisticated Woman | August 2016
visual images and send my taste buds and olfactory senses into overdrive: Junegold, Dixiered, Harvester and Topaz. Nothing says summer more than that first bite into a perfectly sweet ripe peach. You know it’s perfect when you have to stand over the kitchen sink to allow the peach juice to run freely down your hands and chin. The fragrance is intoxicating even before you submit to that first bite. That’s how I prefer my peaches—simply wrapped in their sun-ripened fuzzy skins. If I can control myself from eating them all straight from the bowl, then I can begin to think about how their peachy goodness can be incorporated into sweet and savory edibles for my foodie friends. First, a few tips on how to buy peaches. The basic rule of thumb is to buy the ones that smell the way you want them to taste. Give them a squeeze. Firmer peaches are perfect for grilling, slicing into salads, canning, and adding to salsas. More tender ones can be used in pies and cobblers (see my recipe for the best cobbler ever in Foodies and Friends archives). The soft ones are perfect for eating as is, since peaches don’t hold their shape very well when cooking or baking.
Now, let’s get down to cooking business. Try this recipe from “I am a food blog” and transform a traditional summer panzanella salad into a culinary surprise. Panzanella salad is the best because there is no salad or leafy greens. Instead you toast cubes of a hearty, crusty bread until crispy and combine with other ingredients. Panzanella is usually made with crunchy bread, ripe tomatoes, basil and a tangy vinaigrette. In this peachy panzanella, you will discover summer in a bowl: sweet, juicy peaches, a sour-spicy vinaigrette, creamy mozzarella (or I like to use feta) and some fresh mint to tie it all together. You can find all of our favorite recipes at sophisticatedwoman.com/foodies-friends.

Directions: Toss bread cubes in 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat and toast lightly. Alternatively, you can toast the bread in a 400°F oven for 10 minutes, tossing cubes every so often. You may use peaches that are raw, roasted or both. To roast peaches, heat a touch of butter in a small saucepan over medium-high heat. Roast until golden brown on both sides, about 2-3 minutes per side. Whisk together honey, lime juice, oil and sriracha. Taste and add salt and pepper as needed. In a large bowl, toss together the toasty bread cubes, peaches, mozzarella and fresh mint leaves. Pour the dressing over the Panzanella and give it a good toss. Serve immediately or let sit for a while to soak up the juices. Experiment with your own favorite salads by adding peaches. I made a salad last night with spring greens, sliced peaches, prosciutto and feta with a tart and refreshing citrus dressing. YUMMY! Wait, don’t forget dessert. When it’s hot and you need something refreshing, summer fruit — tart blueberries, creamy ripe figs, sweet strawberries and juicy peaches — just screams dessert. Fruit pies, fruit crumbles, fruit crisps and cobblers, fruit in ice cream, or simply fruit on its own. Maybe with Pet milk? Cocktails with peaches? The Bellini, of course. Visit the SW Foodies and Friends website for more savory, sweet and drinkable recipes with my favorite summer fruit, the luscious and fragrant peach.

Jade Skluzacek ENTERPRISING WOMAN
Fashion Forward WRITTEN BY JILL WILLIE PHOTOS BY STEVE RANDON
IMAGINE SHOPPING WITH
one of the most versatile professionals in the fashion industry, taking advice from someone who has styled models in New York, Paris and London and who has been trained to identify design trends before they hit the runway. For many, it would be a dream come true. And at Jade Younger Skluzacek’s Stella Dallas Boutique in Mandeville, it is not a dream but a reality. A Northshore native, Jade has spent the last five years traveling the globe working in virtually every aspect of fashion from retail and wholesale merchandising to fashion editorial and styling. Her vast experience includes work as stylist, trend forecaster, visual merchandiser, curator and project manager for both national and international brands. Combining experience with education, she was one of only four candidates from the United States accepted to the esteemed MFA program in Fashion Trend Forecasting from Polimoda in Florence, Italy and graduated at the top of her class. A little over a year ago Jade traded in the hustle and bustle of New York and returned home. She and her fiancé, Trent, both wanted to be closer to family as they began their life as a married couple. A few weeks after moving to the area, Jade was lamenting the fact that she was having a difficult time finding clothes to fit her lifestyle when Trent suggested she open her own boutique. “I always knew I wanted to open my own store, I just had no idea it would happen so quickly. Once we made the decision, it was all hands on deck,” Jade said. Building Stella Dallas was a true family affair from the start. Jade inherited her southern values of hard work and overcoming the impossible from her mother, Crystal Younger. These lessons helped her get through an arduous build-out process. Inspired by industrial lofts in New York, Jade and Trent selected the color palette, chose materials and laid the flooring. Trent’s dad came in frequently from Alexandria, LA, lending his carpentry skills and craftsmanship to the counter, racks and display areas. And the

Photo by Trent Bailey Studio name? It came straight from Jade’s father, Philip Younger. “Stella Dallas was my father’s nickname for me as a child. It was a film from the 1930s, starring Barbara Stanwyck. Stella Dallas was very chic and glamorous, so calling me by that name was a compliment,” Jade explained. “Fashion is in my blood. In the 1960s my grandmother, Jean Younger Smith, owned a clothing store on Magazine Street with my grandfather. When he passed away at a young age, she had to concentrate on her five young children and was no longer able to run the store. She never lost her love for fashion and worked retail once her children were grown. Having this store is a way of honoring her and having her be a part of my own dream come true.” Stella Dallas features a mix of designs, textures and accessories for women of all ages. Noting the styling of the pieces are just as important as the pieces themselves, Jade said she and her team show customers how to find pieces that work for their bodies and their lifestyles. “Our assortment encompasses all age ranges. It’s in the way you style it that makes a difference. Mothers and daughters will come in together and more often than not, they’ll both leave with something,” she said. The clean lines of the store, recycled wooden display planks and neatly organized racks provide an organic, airy feel that are a perfect complement to the merchandise. Whenever possible, Jade chooses pieces made from
natural fibers sourced from cruelty free and vegan suppliers and made or designed in the United States. Other factors that weigh in her decision to carry certain lines include fit, quality, price point and exclusivity. “I want to carry pieces that women aren’t able to find anywhere else, to offer alternatives that are different, fresh and affordable. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned from working with top designers is that it does not cost a million dollars to look like a million dollars,” she said. “We help customers navigate through some of the choices available to them based on their style and on their budget. There are certain pieces worth splurging for—like a ‘forever pair’ of classic jeans—and we offer those. Yet, we also offer trendier jeans that may only last one season at a lower price point. Our mission is to provide honest, objective advice in a comfortable, friendly environment. We all have pieces in the back of our closets someone convinced us to buy but we’ve never worn. We want our customers to be happy with their purchases and to feel special every time they wear them.” Specializing in easy basics, Stella Dallas recently expanded its accessories division into intimates, bralettes and loungewear. Highlights for the fall season include layered clothing and chunky sweaters perfect for the mild climate that can be paired with boyfriend jeans and sneakers for a trendy “boy meets girl” look. Looking back on her first year in business—a period of time where she and Trent also got married, bought a home, underwent a total renovation and added a second dog to their puppy family—Jade said Stella Dallas is a true reflection of where she is in her professional and personal life. “Just as I advise customers to find key pieces they love and build their wardrobe around them, I’ve surrounded myself with people and activities I love and I’m delighted to build my life around them.”
Stella Dallas Boutique is located at 1814 N. Causeway Blvd. in Mandeville. For more information, call 985-951-2047 or visit stelladallas.us.

Back to School Lunch Ideas WRITTEN BY JOY FELDMAN, NC JD
MAKE SURE TO pack a healthy lunch for your wee ones’ jam-packed schedules. Nutritious foods will help your children stay fueled throughout the day and will boost their concentration and memory. Many of us are searching for magical foods that not only will delight our children, but also provide them with excellent nutrition. Incorporating foods that will infuse their bodies with superb fuel can be challenging, given the hyped-up romance with fast foods. However, there are many options that are nutritious and delicious. Best of all— your kids will not even notice. Here are four simple ways to make your child’s lunch healthy: • Voila! Ditch the nutrient-deficient white bread and purchase corn or brown rice tortillas. Load them up with roasted chicken and thinly sliced vegetables topped with plain yogurt or hummus. Try tossing the tortilla with beans, shredded chicken, salsa or cheese. • Dippity Do Da! Who does not love dipping? Kids especially love to plunge their foods into a delightful creamy creation, so design a lunch that takes advantage of this natural inclination. Use a small container of homemade salad dressing or yogurt with added fresh herbs. This is the perfect accompaniment to sliced vegetables and chunks of turkey. • Abracadabra! Get out your magic wand and transform that lunch box into an assortment of colorful foods with healthy proteins, fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Nutrientdense gems include quinoa, kale chips, hardboiled eggs, berries, grape tomatoes, trail mix, sugar snap peas and cucumber sushi rolls. • Cute things up! Use skewers to put fruits and veggies on. Making small cubes of cheeses alternating with fruits on skewers will entice the pickiest of eaters. Here’s to your health!

Impeccable Reputation 32 Sophisticated Woman | August 2016
Imagine (for some of you this may not be so hard) having two teenagers AND two toddlers at home. Thus, when we asked our clients what they wanted it was no surprise that they said, "a tranquil retreat!" We chose not to line the roman shades to create "soft" light during the day but lined the drapery panels for light control and privacy. A neutral color palette with soft, textured fabrics provided comfort and tranquility. The chair and ottoman provide a "cozy corner" for reading, which the couple prefers to watching TV. We used the couple's bed in the design to reduce costs and completed the project under budget. When you are ready to update your decor or renovate your home, I would love to speak with you about your project. MANY OF US DAYDREAM about lounging in a hammock next to a clear blue pool surrounded by palm trees. While some of us are lucky enough to travel to tropical destinations to live this dream, Yvonne King and Greg Lala are fortunate enough to step outside their back door and call it reality. When the couple bought their home in the Sanctuary, the outdoor living AT A GLANCE, you may think you’re standingspace in a sleek was definitely a selling point. “We spent eight months renovating the apartment in New York City or a modern mansion interiorinof the home, but the exterior was already beautiful,” says Yvonne. In fact, the swinging hammocks that flank the north side of the pool were inspired by a pair of hammocks the couple saw on a trip to Key West. With ample seating, as well as an outdoor kitchen, pizza oven and fireplace, the space is perfect for entertaining. Yvonne and Greg have hosted a variety of outdoor gatherings, ranging from a large pool party complete with catering and a DJ to weekends with Greg’s business partner from Dixie RV and their families. They are looking forward to hosting more events as the summer continues and cooler months arrive. “The space is perfect regardless of the weather,” she says. “The fireplace keeps the patio warm in the cooler months, and the pool and shade of the covered patio are great for keeping cool in the summer.”
Tired of Cleaning?
The covered patio boasts 22- foot ceilings and custom drapery as well as a chandelier that originally hung in the home’s main foyer. Yvonne notes that decorating is a passion of hers and personally decorated the outdoor living space. The outdoor renovations included a floor to ceiling stacked stone mantle for the fireplace as well as a new backsplash for the outdoor kitchen.
Let us do it!
Greg and Yvonne undoubtedly will host more events like the inaugural pool party, but until then, they are happy to sit outside and enjoy their morning coffee together in their personal paradise.

Jarvis–Bolyard Wedding ON APRIL 6, 2013 at half past six in the evening, Stephanie Jamie Jarvis married David Neil Bolyard, Junior. Stephanie is the daughter of Tom and Bridget Jarvis of Mandeville and David is the son of David Bolyard, Julie Beth Bolyard, Pat Ross and Bill Ross. The ceremony took place on the dock of the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Maritime Museum and was performed by the Reverend Gene Finnell of Munhullen United Methodist Church, a lifelong friend of both families. As guests arrived, they were offered a celebratory cocktail of “Ponchatoula Strawberry Sangria” while they waited for the ceremony to begin. The groom and groomsmen arrived by boat dressed in khaki suits with handmade fishing flies as boutonnieres. The
bridesmaids wore navy blue dupioni silk dresses in different styles. Stephanie’s stunning wedding gown was an ivory mermaid style dress, also of dupioni silk designed by Lea Anne Belter. The bride and bridesmaids’ dresses all came from Olivier Couture. After the ceremony, the guests and bridal party settled into the reception on the patio in front of the museum. They enjoyed food catered by The Lakehouse, Chef Stefani Sollberger and music provided by the band, At Fault. The entire event was styled by the Girls in Black with flowers by Kim Starr Wise. At the end of the reception, the bride and groom departed by boat amid an aisle of lit sparklers and fireworks over the Tchefuncta River.
