We met with our August 2019 Enterprising Woman, Liza Ledet at Air Salon & Blow Dry Bar in Mandeville where she prepared for her photo shoot by having her hair styled and makeup done by Breanna King. Liza's photo shoot was at the home of Scott Discon and Scott Williams in Mandeville, where Trey the Dalmation participated in the photos as we enjoyed the tropical surroundings.

PETS WITH PERSONALITY
AUGUST 29TH MARKS the 14th anniversary of the day hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans and changed thousands of lives—including my own. We decided, like many others, to move away and start a new life with our five-year-old daughter. Eight months later I became homesick and knew we needed to move back home to be with family, but
2019 PET CONTEST WINNERS! We asked our readers to submit entries for our annual contest and the response was overwhelming! Our Facebook fans voted for each of their favorites in four categories. Thanks to our generous sponsors—Mandeville Animal Hospital, VetNaturally, Crosspoint Veterinary Hospital and Veterinary Holistic Healing—for providing gift baskets with products and services to our furry friends!
Congratulations to all of our winners!
going back to the Lakeview area was not an option. This is how I found my way to the Northshore and never looked back. Enamoured by the charm of the area, I fell in love with this community and can’t imagine living my life anywhere else. This month’s Enterprising Woman, Dr. Liza Ledet, knows exactly what I'm talking about. Originally from Pennsylvania, she moved to Louisiana to attend veterinary school at LSU. During Hurricane Katrina, with her puppy Rocco by her side, she assisted in setting up an animal rescue center. This experience, along with her love of outdoor activities and the beautiful community, quickly bonded her to Louisiana. When she decided to open her own veterinary practice, there was no question that Mandeville would become her new home. Read Dr. Ledet's full story about her dedication and love for animals on page 22. Also in this issue, meet the winners of our annual "Pets With Personality" contest. With entries in four categories, dozens of our furry friends showed off

Allie is an 11-year-old Beagle who was adopted into her forever home in November of 2017 after being returned a multitude of times. She absolutely loves to be walked daily, visit the beach and give kisses to children. Adopting her has brought an incredible amount of joy and love into our home, and we encourage others to consider saving a life from your local shelter!
Haven Camille is a year old rescue from a flea infested home. She was 12 weeks old when a friend told me about her. Haven models for designers internationally. She is very lovable and gives lots of kisses. When it is time to go to bed, she snuggles on my shoulder to be rocked to sleep. Our family consists of 9 crybabies, Haven is number 8. She is a pom/yorkie mix.

BLUE
Messiest DAISY
He came from a stray on the streets to the heart of our home. Blue was rescued on a wintery Christmas Eve when my husband, who is a police officer, was on duty and saw a cold, scared and hungry little nugget dodging traffic. Best Christmas present ever! Since that day, Blue has ruled OUR world and our hearts.
Daisy is a rescue from Texas now living in Mandeville. She is all puppy and loves to run and play with her big sister Dixie, especially through mud. Even the most indestructible toys are no match for Daisy’s sharp puppy teeth, much to the consternation of her family.

Does my indoor cat need monthly flea prevention? Yes, absolutely! We prescribe year round flea prevention for all of our feline patients whether they stay inside or outside. We recommend a combination product that also prevents against heartworms and other parasites which we see throughout the year here in South Louisiana. We often find fleas on indoor only cats that are not on prevention and it is much easier to prevent an infestation than to treat one.

Is my premium dry dog food an appropriate diet for my pet? The answer is no. Pets were never meant to eat dry dog food. If you pour water into the dry dog food, it puffs up. When your dog eats this dry kibble, they are rehydrating the kibble with their own body moisture. This leaves your pet in a constant state of dehydration and inflammation. Adding moisture to your pet’s diet is essential. Would you want to eat dehydrated, dry kibble for every meal for the rest of your life?

My pet is acting just fine, why does my veterinarian offer bloodwork every year? We offer wellness bloodwork for all of our patients every year at their wellness visits, even if they are acting like super bouncy balls and jumping all over the place as a healthy, happy pet. We are looking for trends of changes in their bloodwork. Early detection in changes of organ system function is imperative for that pet to live a long, healthy life. The cost of routine comprehensive wellness panels for dogs and cats range from $100-$160 typically.

Is there a viable alternative to surgery for back issues/disc disease? Absolutely! Acupuncture is a proven modality to resolve the pain, inflammation and neurological dysfunction that accompanies disc disease. Weakness, urinary incontinence and even paralysis can be overcome with acupuncture, herbal medicine and Tuina massage. There is a 95-100% resolution in Grade 1-3 disc disease, 75-90% in Grade 4 (paralysis and no bladder control) and 50-60% in Grade 5 in which there is no deep pain (surgery is recommended). Definitely worth a try before surgery!

My dog has been on heartworm prevention and tested positive. Why? There are two explanations for why this happens. It takes seven months for a test to show positive so if your pet missed prevention over that time frame or was adopted at that time, he could have tested negative due to an immature phase then test positive now. The other reason is there is a resistant strain of heartworms to the heartworm prevention. If your pet has not missed any doses and tested negative on the prior year, your dog may have a resistant infection and needs the treatment to prevent spread.

Do I really need to brush my pet's teeth? What can I do if he/she won't let me? Home oral hygiene is an important part of your pet's general health. Daily dental care helps prevent plaque and calculus formation that can lead to gum disease, tooth decay and loss, and systemic infections; however, we understand that not all pets are cooperative. Other alternatives to brushing include special diets, treats, chews and food and water additives. In addition, we recommend annual professional dental cleanings with dental radiographs by your veterinarian.

Christie McHughes, DVM CROSSPOINT VETERINARY HOSPITAL • DVM - LSU Veterinary School • BA, Zoology Southeastern Louisiana University • Fear-Free™ Certified WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO BECOME A VET? As a little girl, I grew up on a farm and I enjoyed animal care. My older sister and I were very involved in 4-H and FFA, so we would wake up very early before school and feed and milk our champion Jersey cows. In addition to my cows, I always had a cat as a pet and I knew that I would always continue in animal care. Veterinary medicine is my passion. WHAT IS UNIQUE TO YOUR BUSINESS? We have superior monitoring systems including capnography, digital dental radiography, class IV laser therapy, oxygen cages for emergencies, ultrasonography, separate isolation and ICU services. We are among only 12% of veterinary hospitals in the US and Canada who follow the American Animal Hospital Association guidelines and hold ourselves to the highest of standards. WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF YOUR JOB? Communicating and educating clients is paramount. Pets are living longer and quality animal healthcare is the reason. I help pet owners understand the importance of routine bloodwork, a good diet, weight control and preventatives for parasites. Watching for trending abnormalities and implementing an early treatment protocol helps maintain the lives of our pets. WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB? My job is so rewarding. I love when pet owners come in with new additions to their family. Whether it be a life-saving surgery or early detection and treatment, we want to offer the best services and care. My goal is to make sure that these pets have a happy and healthy life and I feel that I can help pet owners achieve that. That's when I sit back and smile.

Protecting Your Pets from Poisonous Plants PET OWNERS CAN
become concerned if their
furbaby has injested a houseplant and questions "Is it poisonous?" Household plants can definitely liven up a home, but unfortunately some species are dangerous for your pets and could even prove to be fatal if they’re ingested. While there are thousands of species of plants and flowers, only a small percentage of plants are truly dangerous and poisonous to your pet. Make sure you know which plants are most likey to cause potential problems so you can prevent your dog or cat

from getting into these common flowers and plants. As a responsible pet owner, it’s your duty to familiarize yourself with the safety of the plants in and around your home, as well as what to do in the event of ingestion. Here is a short list of some common poisonous plants: Autumn Crocus, Azalea, Cyclamen, Kalanchoe, Lilies, Oleander, Dieffenbachia, Lily of the Valley, Sago Palm, Tulips and Hyacinths. There are, of course, many more that may cause issues for your pets. So, as a pet owner, be certain that you know which ones are safe to bring into your pet's environment. Symptoms may range from mild GI issues to life-threatening problems or even death. If you suspect your
MAGIC. That is the only word that can accurately describe the work of Northshore Humane Society (NHS). When an animal that has never lived outside of a shelter is finally connected with a loving family
pet has ingested any of these or any other questionable substance, call the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (APCC) at 888-426-4435 or your veterinarian for assistance. Accurate and timely identification of the suspected substance is very important. Having the container, package, or label in hand will save valuable time and may save the life of your pet.
waiting with open arms and finds a home, there is no greater joy. Especially when that animal almost didn’t pull through and has needed attention from a skilled medical team. Not only does NHS have a caring adoptions department, animal care staff and administrative team, they also have an experienced clinic staff. When you adopt a pet from the NHS shelter, you even receive discounted pricing at the clinic where you will have access to the best veterinary care at already competitive pricing. Dr. Estelle, Director of Veterinary Medicine & Services, is the source of much of the magic at the NHS shelter and community clinic. She goes the extra mile for her patients and never misses a chance to teach her staff by helping them to learn and grow. She made Covington her home in 2005 and began working at NHS in 2010, where she aimed to better serve the community by helping homeless animals. Another amazing source of magic at this clinic and shelter is its volunteers. These generous members of the community selflessly donate their time, often cleaning cages and giving baths to the animals. All of this with a smile on their faces and likely their own foster dog or cat in hand. Thank you for volunteering! Pearly Whites WRITTEN BY MELISSA H. JOHNSON, DDS
THE NUMBER ONE
thing that people would
change about their smile is color. We want to brighten a room with our smile! What is the best, fastest and safest way to do this? First, each set of teeth has a maximum shade of whiteness that they can achieve. We can reach it slowly, minimizing the risk of sensitivity, or do it quickly and get more dramatic results. Setting aside whitening toothpastes (see our articles from June), let’s focus on those products that are applied directly to your teeth. Bleaching products use peroxides (hydrogen or carbamide) to whiten the inner layer of your tooth. They come in different varieties (strips, gels with custom trays, in office etc) and different concentrations (10% - 43%). What you choose depends on how fast you want your results and the sensitivity of your teeth and gums. In-office bleaching gives you the most dramatic results in 1-2 visits with the highest risk for temporary sensitivity. Your least expensive option would be your basic whitening strips. They take weeks to whiten, but the gel can irritate your gums and be washed away by your saliva. Custom trays, which are fairly inexpensive, protect your gums and allow you to choose your peroxide concentration. However, they may take several weeks to whiten to the desired result. The change is gradual, yet safer for those prone to sensitivity. Whitening products are effective, but are they safe? Research has shown that there is a short increase in porosity of the tooth, while bleaching, with no loss of the enamel. The risks are transient in nature and easily mitigated with calcium and fluoride based toothpastes. Bleaching agents do not change the shade of existing crowns, veneers or other dental restorations. Any additional questions? Talk to us! We’ll customize a treatment for you to brighten your pearly whites.

Different Types of Trusts WRITTEN BY DOUG SUNSERI
MY DAUGHTER IS
taking the bar exam and
indicated the concept of “Trust” was explained in her review course in a highly theoretical and convoluted manner. She thought that “Trust” was an esoteric estate planning device only used for “rich people”. In response, I explained a Trust is simply a container to hold assets and the trust document explains on how and when to disperse the items in the container. I also explained Trusts are a basic estate planning tool used for various types of estate, not just rich people. A revocable living trust is a trust that can be changed at any time. If you have second thoughts about a provision in the trust, such as the beneficiary, you can change or revoke the trust. However, a revocable trust offers no creditor protection. The trust assets are considered owned by you for Medicaid planning and subject to federal estate taxes ($11.4M). A revocable trust allows you to plan for mental disability and avoid probate. An irrevocable trust can't be changed after the trust has been formed and funded. Further, you can't act as trustee and manage the trust's assets.

variety of estate planning goals such as: • Estate Tax Reduction - deferring death taxes for married couples to death of second spouse; •Asset Protection—including long Term Medicaid Planning; • Special Needs Trust—disabled child or family member receives the benefit of a donation or inheritance without the loss of government benefits; • Charitable Trust; Revocable and/or irrevocable trust are commonly utilized in many different types of estate plans (simple and complex) to accomplish specific objectives. By the way (BTW), such ‘Trusts’ are not only for “rich people.”

me through everything.
I adopted him during my first semester of vet school. We made it through four years at LSU School of Veterinary Medicine, several moves, the beginning and end of relationships, a new baby, starting my own business… He’s 15 now and having degenerative issues with his hind legs. But he gets all the help I can give him: acupuncture, natural supplements, medicine, herbs, a special harness, the best diet and laser therapy. He’s my

son Luke’s best friend and overall, he’s doing great, considering.” In a few short sentences, Dr. Liza Ledet has defined her veterinary practice through the story of her beloved Shepherd mix. She speaks capably and confidently but can’t hide her deep love and compassion for animals, of which Rocco is the shining example. “They can’t tell you what’s wrong, and sometimes their signs of illness are subtle. I have to figure out how best to advocate for them. Rocco helps me relate to clients’ pets, especially the geriatric ones when it’s time for hard conversations and empathizing with the family while making the best decisions for everyone. I’m lucky to have him at the hospital with me every day.” The quaint cottage on Girod Street isn’t the largest animal hospital in Mandeville, but it is the home of big dreams, deep commitment and a far-reaching impact on pets, families and the community. Every unique detail of Dr. Ledet’s surroundings reflects her sense of purpose, which is to provide competent and compassionate pet care. Her mission radiates everywhere with a refreshing sense of calm and welcoming upon entering the building. She answers queries about her goals with questions of her own, “What is our ‘why?’ How can we strive to do better?” And her desire to excel reaches far beyond the walls of the meticulously kept and inviting facility. It’s about constantly looking for innovations in healthcare and challenging the current norms to help her clients safely and comfortably determine what is best for their pets. 22 Sophisticated Woman | August 2019
cover story
In terms of healthcare, Dr. Ledet passionately explains, “We don’t just go through the motions. I take a multi-dimensional approach that helps animals thrive.” With over 12 years of experience in private practice, Dr. Ledet has evolved her principles to combine a traditional Western medicine background with Eastern techniques such as acupuncture provided by her colleague Dr. G with VetNaturally. She relies heavily on natural products including probiotics, and anti-anxiety and joint supplements. Dr. Ledet firmly believes that, “You should judge a doctor not by how many medications they prescribe, but by how many they are able to discontinue.” Impacted at age 13 by the loss of her father to pancreatic cancer, Dr. Ledet became focused on health at an early age. From experience, she knows the words of Virgil are true, ‘The greatest wealth is health.’ The LSU Vet School honors graduate feels nutrition also plays a critical part in all of our lives. Mandeville Animal Hospital now carries a raw pet food that is balanced and not processed, which repairs the immune system from the inside. A whole foods diet is more easily digestible, provides much needed moisture and calms the GI tract to help prevent and treat chronic disease. Dr. Ledet is fully vetted in fitness and wellness; playing tennis regularly, competing in triathlons and teaching group exercise classes in the community. “I strive to live a life of health and wellness and lead by example, both in and outside of the office. I am grateful to have the opportunity to positively impact people’s lives as well as their pets. Mandeville is beautiful, and the breathtaking lakefront is the perfect backdrop for being active—especially with pets. I knew I wanted my life and practice to be here.” In fact, Dr. Ledet has become a community leader as the President of the Old Mandeville Business Association. “We see our clients out in the community, and it is an honor to serve and preserve the integrity of the community that I love so much.” Dr. Ledet and her team are operating at the next level. You only need to spend a few minutes in the appealing and delightful waiting room to see and feel the difference. "While we love seeing furry new faces, our focus isn’t on getting bigger, it’s on getting better. It’s about growing our hospital by providing phenomenal care to clients that embrace our exceptional customer service and elevated standard of care. We love and nurture our clients like family, and we enjoy taking the extra time with them—always finding a way to accommodate them no matter what. It’s about attention to detail and always putting the patient first, and taking pride in your work as a team. I just have to look into Rocco and the other animals’ eyes to refresh my resolve to do a great job. I’m happy to stay smaller and keep getting better. I feel it’s my duty. I know my clients appreciate the difference here and the high level of service and care.” Mandeville Animal Hospital is located at 419 Girod Street in Mandeville. We have friends we see regularly and my daughter has close friends nearby,” she gushes about Terra Bella. Regular community gatherings are part of life here. Even the address of this particular home has meaning for Jennifer—the numbers translate to the phrase “I Love You.” Ever since a friend pointed that out to her, it’s been the theme of their lives here. “I feel like I have to pinch myself sometimes! A Lifetime of Preparation WRITTEN BY JEN LASSALLE PHOTOS BY CALLEN KATES
WILL CRAIN ALWAYS wanted to practice law, a passion that was no doubt fueled in part when, at age six, he watched his father sworn in as the second-youngest judge in Louisiana history. Those are large shoes to fill, but he was never pressed to fill them. If you ask Will, he’ll tell you having grown up watching his father work, he never felt his career path would lead him to be a judge. He never took a case or a job with the idea that it would position him to be elected judge. And while he didn’t plan to one day seek a seat on the Louisiana Supreme Court, he exudes the confidence born from a skill set and 33 year career he believes has prepared him for the job. Will spent 22 years as a partner and practicing lawyer with Jones Fussell law firm in Covington before being elected and serving on the 22nd Judicial District Court for St. Tammany and Washington parishes from 2009 to 2013. Seven years ago, he took the bench on the First Circuit Court of Appeal and has now authored over 300 written and published opinions. Will’s focus was to make a positive impact on people’s lives and our court system: “My service as an appellate court judge has given me the chance to impact the body of law in Louisiana—the opinions we write and publish form the body of law that shape how lawyers work and how people live their lives every day,” he says. “I am humbled to have the opportunity to contribute to that body of law and to affect how district court judges apply that law to the people and interests that come before them.” Will grew up in Bogalusa and focused much of his attention and energy on athletics. He recalls playing football at Bogalusa High School and finding inspiration in the words posted under the stadium scoreboard, a snippet from “It’s All In the State of Mind,” a poem by Walter D. Wintle. Because of its location, every time Will went on the field, whether for practice or a game, he saw those words. They remained so impactful that he later printed them and, at different times, when his four children were growing up, placed those words in their room. “Think big and your deeds will grow. Think small and you fall behind. Think you can and you will. It's all in your state of mind.” After earning his accounting degree at LSU, he attended LSU law school. His lifelong desire to become a lawyer was finally within reach. “I remember reading my first case to prepare for the first day of class. It read like a story about real people who had done real things that had real outcomes and consequences and I thought 'finally, this makes sense'.” he says. Will talks to students about his pride in the legal profession, calling it a noble profession, mentioning the analytical and practical skills acquired and the importance of the degree. These are values he believes stretch beyond the courtroom. “I’m proud to be a lawyer,” he chuckles, “despite the jokes.” Will’s threshold for workload is high. “My wife asks why I bring so much work home and I tell her that it just doesn’t feel like work to me.” He described Cheri Hackett Crain, his wife of 34 years, as having youthful vitality. “She attacks the day with a vigor and a youthful excitement that I find amazing,” he says. Cheri was an elementary education teacher until the first of their four children, William (31), was born, then followed twins Michael and Matthew (29), and Elizabeth (20). The boys have all graduated from college and are in careers. Their only daughter Elizabeth is in her first year of nursing school at LSU. The sports Will played as a young boy remain a part of his life. Though he no longer plays, he watches. Will also enjoys golf, fishing, and hunting, all of which provide opportunities for family time. Family is a clear priority for Will and his time with them is a crucial part of his makeup. When asked about his down time, he talked of spending time in Franklinton maintaining the place where his aunt lives and his father and uncle grew up. The opportunity for physical work allows him to clear his mind and return his focus. Will sees his run for Louisiana Supreme Court as a natural, though unplanned, progression of his career and an opportunity he’s eager to face. “The work of the Supreme Court and the way the justices exercise judgment and decide complex and important cases before them affects every citizen in the state of Louisiana,” he says. “It affects our liberty and our prosperity, individually and as a state. With the support of voters, I am hopeful for the opportunity to use my unique qualifications and experience, 33 years as a lawyer or judge to make a positive impact on our body of law and the direction of our state.” Above all, Will considers himself pragmatic and straightforward. “I love my work. I love my family, and I try to live my faith every day. That’s who I am.” This is a paid political advertorial.
