WITH COOLER WEATHER and football season in full swing, there is always something to do during the weekend. The Three Rivers Art Festival is a hugely anticipated event happening in historic downtown Covington. This year the festival takes place on November 15 and 16. With over 200 different artist booths, music, food, wine tasting and a children’s activities area, this festival is sure to delight visitors of all ages. Other important events happening in November include our editor Anna Grundmann’s wedding; we certainly have enjoyed following her planning in her blog (found on sophisticatedwoman.com) and are looking forward to sharing her special day when she marries her betrothed Vinnie. The other more well known events are Veterans Day and Thanksgiving. On Veterans Day, we stop and thank those who have served and remember those that gave the ultimate sacrifice for their country. Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday, a time for family and giving thanks for all our blessings, where families open their doors to friends and extended family. It is also a perfect time to take the time to give back by helping those less fortunate. For more information on local food banks and pantries, go to foodpantries.org or Covingtonfoodbank.org. In this issue, we meet Dr. Stefanie Schultis and hear about her evolving journey through medicine. Our fashion editor Patty Beal has found some fabulous footwear for the fall and we have the official guide to the Three Rivers Art Festival.

Thanksgiving Break WRITTEN BY DR. MARY W. SPEED
Sophisticated Woman | November 2014
ONE OF THE first questions you may hear on the way to grandma’s house this Thanksgiving is, “Mom, Dad, does Grandma have Wi-Fi?” When you get to a friend’s house and your electronic devices: Kindle, phone, computer, E-readers automatically sign-on to Wi-Fi, you know those are good friends. But Grandma? She may or may not have Wi-Fi. Maybe it’s time for a Thanksgiving break in two ways: a break from and a break to. Take a break from electronic connects and connect face-to-face. Here are a few phrases to get started: Want to take a walk? Let’s play ball. Whose turn is it to set the table? What’s Thanksgiving about? Do you have a Thanksgiving list? Am I on it? Distractions from Wi-Fi space aside, family and friends can grasp anew their appreciation for each other (much of which may be posted later). As I close this note, I am reminding myself of times past when I traveled over the river and through the woods to Grandma’s house. Those who gathered set routines aside and visited, prepared dishes, cut wood, shoveled snow, ate, gossiped and finally said thanks. That is where I really learned to pray. I knew rote prayers by heart, but prayers at Thanksgiving were unrehearsed and from the heart. One prayer I recall, Dear Lord, thank you for the rain and sun that allowed crops to grow; thank you for the farmers, harvesters, produce managers... When the dishes are done, the drying towels hung and you are driving away, you may discover that this break restored you.

‘Tis the Season to Start Tax Planning WRITTEN BY JILL WILLIE PHOTOS BY TOM BALLANTINE
WHETHER YOU HAVE almost completed your holiday shopping or you haven’t yet begun, you’ll undoubtedly find it easier to tackle the season if you have a game plan in place. The importance of planning doesn’t just pertain to the holidays, however. It’s also an essential part of tax preparation. Shirley “Toni” McCord, CPA, APAC, helps hundreds of businesses and individuals develop the best strategies to tackle even the most complex financial decisions. Noting there is no “one size fits all” solution when it comes to tax planning, Toni said the key is to do more than find opportunities that ease someone’s tax burden. It is to actually find opportunities that align with their overall philosophy. “That is why we spend so much time getting to know our clients,” she said. And Toni’s clients get to know her as well. “That’s one of the things I love about the New Orleans area—people are genuinely interested in one another. I wasn’t born

Seniors on the Northshore
WITH PEOPLE starting families later in life, many seniors find themselves with children still living at home or returning. More seniors are staying in the workforce and some are choosing to downsize their homes following the nationwide trend to build smaller homes with smaller footprints. For example, planned communities like Terra Bella in Covington provide a village-like setting with spaces for families, seniors, shops, restaurants and businesses, all intertwined together.
These active seniors are nothing like the grandparents of yesteryear. They remain involved in the community and in their children’s lives. And as the senior population on the Northshore increases, more and more facilities are catering to their ever-growing needs. Health clubs offer exercise classes and special tennis leagues specifically catering to seniors. Even retirement communities are engaging more active seniors in their programs. Senior Living Communities like The Trace and Beau Provence offer social, educational, devotional and recreational activities for residents. Whereas Christwood Retirement Community recently built a state-of-theart community center—which is basically a health club, spa, activity and fitness center— with memberships open to the public ages 55 and older. Other community centers include Mandeville’s Paul R. Spitzfaden Community Center, which has an abundance of activities for seniors in the community. The
community center offers activities such as line dancing, yoga, tai-chi, art classes, ceramics, meditation, table tennis, bridge card games and health awareness classes. Three separate senior clubs, AARP, New Image Club and Mandeville Senior Citizens, hold meetings at the community center once a month for their members. Senior specific clubs or any type of club memberships are a great way for seniors to stay actively involved in the community. St. Tammany Parish is home to a thriving senior community. Not only are the health care communities and senior care facilities on the Northshore top notch, but the activities available in the area are ideal for retired citizens looking for a good time.

Beau Provence Memory Care Assisted Living— Bridging the Gap in Alzheimer’s and Dementia Care UPON WALKING THROUGH the doors of Beau Provence Memory Care Assisted Living, Mandeville’s first and only memory care exclusive community, one is immediately struck by the beauty of the freshly painted building. From the high, arched ceilings featuring sophisticated chandeliers, to the natural light spilling from full-length windows that highlight picturesque views, you might mistake Beau Provence for someone’s lakehouse getaway. That is, until you take a right or a left into the Pontchartrain or Fontainebleau neighborhoods, each of which features its own kitchen and dining area, sitting room, hobby room and state-of-theart luxury suites. Creating an atmosphere that truly feels like home is exactly what Beau Provence owner and operator David Schonberg had in mind when he set out to build Beau Provence. After developing several exceptional assisted living and memory care communities throughout Louisiana, South Carolina and Mississippi, Schonberg has honed and perfected his unique approach to providing superior care and comfort to residents living with Alzheimer’s and dementia. Beau Provence has come forth to fill a rapidly growing need for quality Alzheimer’s and dementia care, as research shows that by the year 2050, almost 15 million Americans will be diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Brian Berrigan, the executive director of the Louisiana Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, welcomes Beau Provence with open arms, stating, “It is fantastic to work with and alongside our community partner Beau Provence in the fight against Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. With Beau Provence’s foundation of best practices, including quality care, training, consultations, support and commitment to research, its goal of creating a dementia capable society is more than achievable.” Beau Provence Memory Care Assisted Living Community is located at 100 Beau West Drive at the corner of Hwy. 22 in Mandeville. combined memory care and assisted living communities, Schonberg & Associates has positioned themselves at the forefront of the memory care industry. The Schonberg team partners with the country’s leading Alzheimer’s and dementia experts, including the nationally renowned CPI team led by Kim Warchol, to design communities and programs that meet the social, intellectual, nutritional and spiritual needs of each resident. To promote community education, they have also debuted the Schonberg Alzheimer’s Education and Support Center at Beau Provence. When asked how he defines a nourishing space for someone with Alzheimer’s or dementia, Schonberg immediately responds, “An environment built around their needs, their cognitive levels and their dignity.” In Beau Provence, Schonberg has created just that, appointing a highly experienced and compassionate team to carry out his vision. Ebola: What you Need Jr. Page (2/3) Non-Bleed 5.05” to Know forx 8.875” Now
THIS ARTICLE is not fear mongering, but its intention is to provide what is known so far about this epidemic outbreak in Western Africa (Liberia, Guinea, Nigeria, Senegal, and Sierra Leone) occurring earlier this year, and about to be pandemic spreading to other continents. Microscopically, it’s in the filovirus family with Marburg virus, together the most virulent pathogens of humans. Five different species of Ebola known: Zaire, Sudan, Ivory Coast, Bundibugyo and Reston agents, with Zaire species causing up to 88 percent fatality vs. Sudan species 50 percent. Humans and primates are infected through reservoirs linked to the fruit bats in caves in Uganda. Ebola enters the body via infected bodily fluids, such as saliva, sweat and semen, through mucous membranes, breaks in skin, or intravenously (Not known if also via aerosol droplets). Incubation period ranges from 2 to 21 days before symptoms start, which initially feature fever/chills and generalized malaise; then diffuse non-itching red rash by days 5–7; and nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain may ensue. As disease progresses, diffuse bleeding occurs through any bodily orifice prior to end of life. Mainstay treatment is supportive care to keep patient alive, as no approved therapies are currently available. However, a cocktail of three monoclonal antibodies called Zmapp appears promising as it has saved two U.S. healthcare workers. The key to suppressing transmission is through infection control precautions and environmental control. It is reported that the virus can survive on environmental surfaces for up to four days and can be killed with chlorine bleach and possible UV light. Please contact CDC for further updates.

Millions of people around the world are missing enough teeth to require the use of a denture. Many of them struggle to keep their dentures secure, particularly in the lower jaw. If you have this problem, you already know about the embarrassment of slipping dentures, not being able to eat the foods that you love and the ineffectiveness of denture adhesives. Fortunately, there is a way to make your denture work the way it was intended: stabilize it with dental implants. The use of dental implants to stabilize dentures has proven to be successful for many people. The number continues to grow as word spreads about the effectiveness and long-term durability of the treatment. In fact, it has been reported that dental implants have the highest success rate of any implanted surgical device. Dental implants are the new standard of care for tooth replacement. They bond with healthy bone and provide permanent support for dental crowns and dentures. Dental implants look and feel like natural
teeth and can last a lifetime. Implants can be placed in most adults. Adolescents may be eligible once their face structure has matured. The implants may be placed in as little as 30 to 60 minutes depending on the location and the number of implants placed. “Our office was one of the first to implement 3D imaging to improve patient treatment for dental implants as well as failing root canals and other pathology,” says Dr. Schof. Technology and training are keys to help detect issues well before patients experience symptoms. By investing in both, Drs. Schof and Hammack and their team can lay out the most accurate and cost-effective treatment plans for people at all levels of oral health. Both have completed implant residency to further the services they provide. “At The Mandeville Center for Dental Excellence, we strive to break down the barriers that prevent people from seeing the dentist. It is our unparreled level of accommodation, treatment, acceptance and followup that garners us rave reviews from our patients year after year. Dr. Charles A. Schof is a member of the Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, The American Dental Assoc. and has received Mastership Status from the Academy of General Dentistry. ITCHY SKIN
Itchy Skin and What Lurks Within AMAZING NEW INSIGHTS into our immune systems have allowed researchers to understand why certain skin conditions occur more frequently with age. When one of the “arms” of the immune system becomes disabled by disease or age, other aspects of this remarkable system take up the slack and become more active, sometimes too 1/3act Square active. This balancing was first noted in 5.05” x 4.35” the 1980s by doctors treating AIDS patients. Despite their seriously diminished immunity allowing infections by normally innocuous bacteria, fungi and yeast, these patients had a multitude of skin conditions caused by over activity of another aspect of their immune system. Where one type of immunity was paralyzed, another was hyperactive. The same balancing act holds true in normal aging skin. As we age, there is diminished function of “helper T-cells” which coordinate the immune response and help it to run smoothly. These same cells are the ones decimated by the AIDS virus. This loss of control manifests itself in more skin cancers, bacterial and fungal infections, shingles, etc. But the increased incidence of itchy eczema, slow-to-heal insect bites, psoriasis and allergic dermatitis are due to countering overactive, uncontrolled cells causing inflammation in the skin. To some extent, just as in AIDS patients, the general state of our entire immune system can be judged by the types of skin maladies occurring. Skin rashes sometimes indicate a severe, even cancerous internal condition. Square Generalized severe1/3 itching and psoriasis-like 5.05” xnose 4.35” changes on the hands, feet, and ears are among the more common skin indicators of underlying cancer. Any persistent inflammatory skin condition should be evaluated by a dermatologist in view of the altered balance in our aging immune systems. of little one-way valves that are present throughout all of the veins in the legs. When the valves are working normally, muscles contract and force blood to move and the one-way valves make sure the movement is upward and back toward the heart. It’s really a very neat system. So here comes the bad news! When women wear high heels, there is a lesser amount of contraction activity within the calf muscles. Less muscle contraction means less movement of blood in leg veins even when we’re walking. Less movement of blood means that blood is pooling and this leads to more strain on the veins and ultimately valves are more likely to fail. Valve failure is really what we need to avoid in maintaining good vein health! Ladies, I would never ask you to limit shoe buying! Being concerned about heel size however, especially for every day use is probably a beneficial thing when it comes to vein health.

AS A PHYSICIAN specializing in vein care, women ask all the time, “Is wearing high heels really a bad thing when it comes to having healthy leg veins?” Now, their husbands ask me if the quantity of shoes can be the cause of something bad. That’s another story all together! Most people think that this is just an old wives tale right next to catching a cold because of cold weather. Well, unfortunately, it isn’t a wives tale and wearing high heels really does impact the way leg veins function and consequently the overall health of your veins. There are two types of blood vessels in our body: arteries and veins. Arteries carry blood rich in oxygen from the heart to the entire body. Blood in arteries moves because the heart pumps and forces blood throughout the arterial system. Veins are the blood vessels that carry blood back to the heart to be oxygenated. Blood in veins does not move because the heart is pumping. Instead, it’s dependent on the activity of muscular contractions of the extremities. Leg veins do not have a heart to pump blood, they do however have something we call the “calf muscle pump.” The calf muscle pump refers to the fact that as our calf muscles contract in the course of walking and other movement, they actually compress the veins they surround and force the blood to move. Working in conjunction with this activity are the hundreds

ANNUAL GIFT TAX
Annual Gift Tax Exclusion
WRITTEN BY RONDA M. GABB
WE ARE OFTEN asked, “How much can I give my children each year?” Usually what folks are referring to is the “Annual Gift Tax Exclusion Amount” (AGTE). This amount for 2014 is $14,000 per person (it is not expected to rise for 2015). This means that if you are wealthy enough, you can gift $14,000 to every person you know. There is no need for the person be related to you. This $14,000 AGTE applies to both husband and wife, so a married couple can actually gift $28,000 to each person per year. If you gift to someone more than the $14,000 AGTE, you will need to file a federal gift tax return (a Form 709). Chances are there will be no gift tax due, as the maximum amount we are allowed to gift in 2014, without having to pay any gift tax, is $5,340,000! This figure will always be the same as the “Applicable Exclusion Amount” for estate taxes, which is projected to rise to $5,430,000 for 2015. There are some gifts that are exempt from any gift tax requirement; in other words, the value of the gift may be unlimited. This includes: gifts to spouses (if they are U.S. citizens, if not a citizen, the gift is limited to only
$145,000), gifts to charities, gifts covering someone’s medical expenses as long as it is payable directly to the provider, and gifts covering tuition as long as that is paid directly to the educational institution. The AGTE is a “calendar year” gift which means you may gift $14,000 on December 31, 2014, then again the next day, on January 1, 2015. However, the gift must be completed in the calendar year. For example, if you write your child an AGTE check for $14,000 on December 31, 2014, it must be cashed before the end of the year. Lastly, you may not take a deduction on your income taxes for making an annual gift. The benefit is that neither the donor, nor the donee, are required to report the transaction on their tax returns. Your proof of the gift is as simple as your canceled check with the memo note of “annual gift.”

Are you experiencing an increase in weight without an increase in appetite? Tired, cold, moody or forgetful? The thyroid is a hormone-releasing gland found in the neck that controls many body functions such as fertility, libido, heart rate, cholesterol, anemia, metabolism, fluid retention and hair loss. Dr. Burkenstock presents Thyroid, the third in a series on Metabolic Syndrome X (MSX), an endocrine disposition where several medical cousins are often present. MSX is a related condition of diabetes, high blood pressure, thyroid cholesterol and obesity. Dr. Burkenstock has lectured for Lakeview and East Jefferson hospitals, seven pharmaceutical corporations and organizations on MSX. Dr. Burkenstock is an Internal Medicine Physician and has extensive studies with top Endocrine and Anti-Aging luminaries such as Dr. Kanakopoulos (Greece), Dr. Runels (USA), Dr, le Coz (Belgium) and Dr. Chataby (Canada). When the thyroid is slow a patient may have any combination of weight gain, hair loss, hoarseness, infertility, heavy periods and miscarriages, high blood pressure, decreased concentration, constipation, rashes and fatigue. Optimal thyroid replacement with hormone T4, and many times hormone T3, rebalances the thyroid function and the running of the organ systems
throughout the body. Often patients’ thyroid function vacillates so monitoring and adjusting thyroid hormone dosage every three to six months can optimize the glands performance. When the thyroid is operating at a TSH blood level of .5 to 1.0, a decrease is usually seen in weight, cholesterol and blood pressure as well as moodiness or depression symptoms. Certain vitamins and minerals support thyroid health such as selenium, zinc, copper, manganese, chromium, tyrosine, Vitamins A, D, B2, B6, B12, methylfolate and ginseng. Foods that nourish the thyroid are fish oil, coconut oil and cod-liver oil, butter, eggs, seafood and cheddar cheese, Brazil nuts, sunflower seeds, avocados and bananas. There has been some evidence linking gluten sensitivty to thyroid function so avoid gluten foods, wheat, millet as well as soy. Dr. Burkenstock begins with an Anti-Aging plan composed of nutrition, vitamins, counseling and exercise to control high blood pressure. If needed, she combines one or more medications. She works intently to develop a life plan to keep patients off multiple medications. In many cases, this is attainable. It is her main goal to keep patients healthy by understanding their condition, treating it aggressively and teaching them to live healthier every day because, “You Are So Worth It!”

Color and the Psychological Effects DID YOU KNOW the colors that surround us influence emotions and moods? Think of a place you feel relaxed and calm. What color are the walls of that place? If they are cool colors like blue or green, the generated feeling is calming. Blue causes the blood pressure to decrease and respiration and metabolism to slow down creating an over all calming effect to the body. Cool colors are seen in nature. These hues are like swimming in the ocean.
Create Express Explore
No color stands alone. On the opposite side of cool colors are the warm colors like red and orange. Hot colors are red in full saturation. Red results in an increased heart rate, which causes the adrenaline to pump into the blood stream. It is the addition of yellow to red that makes warm colors substantially different from hot colors. Warm colors are more welcoming. Like a Caribbean sunset, the warmth of these hues radiates outward and surrounds everything in reach. The effects of combining warm and cool colors help get the brain synapses firing. Purple is the combination of both red and blue. This encourages balance between stimulation and serenity to encourage creativity. Interesting color combinations can stop you in your tracks or change your perspective and mood. No color stands alone. The effects of a color are determined by several factors: the color that surrounds it or perspective of the person looking at the color and the light reflected from the color. Color surrounds us in every aspect of our lives. All too often, we take it for granted. Look around you and study them to finetune your color awareness.

WHERE HAS 2014 GONE? Even though the holiday season is here, there is no holiday in the garden! How is your rake? It should be well worn by now and all the leaves should be stored in your wire compost bin. Decomposition is a great way to make spring topsoil. Adding vegetable and fruit peels along with coffee grounds and any other organic material will bring richness to the compost mix. A good turning is necessary at least once a week. Don’t forget to make a tight cover over the bin. This will speed the process and also keep rodents and other visitors away. Now that the leaves have been raked or removed, it is the best time to sow winter grass seed. Make this a fun project for the family with a hand-rotary spreader and a bag or two of seed. Choose a rainy day and run in rows spreading the seed until the whole lawn has been covered. Get a couple of spreaders and let the whole family take turns dancing in the rain. Keep seed moist until it sprouts and then reapply to thin or bare areas. Winter grass will stay green until the heat of summer arrives and will make every winter day feel a little more like spring!
Our next “chore” is to collect goodies for the holiday table. Leaves, magnolia pods, pine cones, twigs and almost anything else you find in the yard can be sprayed and displayed for holiday decorating. The only boundary is your creativity! A good coating with some
“Work and sweat are good for me and I will be thankful with the end results!” sort of lacquer will help to make the decorations last until the New Year rings in. Let the whole family participate and see who inherited the artistic gene in your household. There may be some creations you will want to save, but even if their final resting place is the trash can, the memories of “creation” day will be something to treasure! Reluctantly, I leave my comfortable desk chair to head into the garden and tackle my own garden tasks. My mantra will be, “Work and sweat are good for me and I will be thankful with the end results!” Truthfully, I am thankful for the sights and sounds of nature every day. They remind me that sometimes in life all we have to do is breathe! Happy Thanksgiving!

WRITTEN BY JO RIPOLL
ATTENTION ALL SCI-FI FANS, this one is for you. A master of Science Fiction, China Miéville’s debut novel King Rat is a twisted take on the Pied Piper. Everyone’s heard or read The Pied Piper of Hamelin by Robert Browning, but have you ever thought about it from the rats’ perspective? Set in London in the late 1990s, we meet Saul on the same night that his father is murdered. While sitting in a jail cell under suspicion, he meets a dark, shadowy character that opens up an entirely new world to him by revealing that half of his parentage is not what he thought it was. He is, in fact, half royalty. His new heritage uncovers avenues that have Saul leaving the life he knows to embrace the supernatural underbelly lying in wait for him. While Saul explores this new world beneath the city he’s always known, a dark power is rising in London, in search of him. Saul is, therefore, beguiled into King Rat’s plan of revenge against this timeless enemy. However, when new information is revealed, Saul rebels against being King Rat’s plot device. But it’s too late to return to the London of yesterday, for he is no longer the man he was. In order to save his friends and the rest of city, he must engage the infamous piper with the beat of drum ‘n’ bass spurring him on. Full of murder, darkness, twists and turns, King Rat will leave you gasping in horror and anticipation.

Innovations in Hormone Therapy— Dr. Stefanie Schultis
Sophisticated Woman | November 2014
WRITTEN BY JILL WILLIE PHOTOS BY SONNY RANDON
18
THROUGHOUT HER 25 plus year career, Dr. Stefanie Schultis’ life has mirrored the lives of most of her patients. In fact, the night before she went into labor for her youngest son, Joshua, Dr. Schultis actually delivered two other babies. From planning families and prenatal care to pregnancies and early motherhood, and now on to another phase in life, she’s shared the same experiences and physical conditions of the women in her care. Dr. Schultis joked that if she were to write a book, she would title it, “I had that too…” “Having personally dealt with medical issues myself has made me a better doctor because I know the struggles that women face—especially as we begin to age,” she said. “Until recently, women really didn’t have many choices when it came to hormone replacement therapies available that were safe, effective and consistent in their results.”
After researching and testing bio-identical hormone pellets from Hormone Therapy Centers of America (HTCA), Dr. Schultis began offering this therapy over the summer. These all-natural plant based products (made from yams and a small amount of soy) have the same molecular structure as the hormones produced within our own bodies. Because HTCA hormones are fused into small pellets (about the size of a Tic Tac®) and inserted under the skin, they provide a constant release of hormones 24/7. Dr. Schultis has undergone extensive training to ensure her patients are afforded the highest level of care, including training by Dr. Briant Herzog in Dallas, Texas who is considered one of the leading experts in the bio-identical hormone therapy field. She also works closely with her nurse practitioner Katy Jones in providing gynecology services as well as bio-identical hormone pellet therapy. HTCA is based in Dallas and is a nationwide provider of bioidentical hormone therapy services. “We want our patients to live happier and healthier lives through proper and natural hormone balance, while enjoying total wellness,” says Ty Richardson, President and Cofounder of HTCA. “Our vision is to make the HTCA name synonymous with bio-identical hormone pellet therapy replacement. We seek out physicians like Dr. Stefanie Schultis, who have well-established practices and are highly respected among their peers. Once we identify these physicians, we give them the best training, the very best pellets on the market today and educate their patients about the benefit and safety of bio-identical hormone pellet therapy replacement.” Most commonly associated with women in their mid-40s and older, hormone therapy is also effective for men suffering from low testosterone. In addition to serving her own patients, Dr. Schultis works in coordination with other gynecologists, primary care physicians and urologists to administer the hormone replacement therapy. Dr. Schultis’ venture into hormone replacement therapy is the latest in a long line of career success. In addition to entering the profession at a time when there were very few women OB-GYNs, Dr. Schultis was also the first woman to see OB-GYN patients and provide hospital services for them on the Northshore. In fact, Dr. Schultis is now delivering a second generation of babies; many of her current patients were the babies she helped bring into this world during the early years of her practice. Dr. Schultis joined her brother Dr. Tristan Schultis in his OB-GYN practice in 1989. Because they had offices in both Metairie and Mandeville, the siblings took turns seeing patients on either side of the lake—yet nearly all deliveries were handled on the Southshore. Dr. Schultis explained that it was not until St. Tammany Parish Hospital established an in-house anesthesia department and a neonatal ICU that women began choosing to have their children in St. Tammany. “When one of my partners, Dr. W. Nick Landry III, helped open the Family Center at the hospital, the scope of medicine and services we could offer here on the Northshore expanded dramatically,” she said. “Once women were comfortable having their babies at the hospital, they became comfortable with having their families seen there as well. This really helped with the growth and the quality of life in the area.” Dr. Schultis’ practice on both sides of the lake built up rapidly.
“Until recently, women really didn’t have many choices when it came to hormone replacement therapies available that were safe, effective and consistent in their results.”

Sophisticated Woman | November 2014
“I was extremely proud to be able to practice with both my brothers Dr. Eric J. Schultis and Dr. Tristan R. Schultis as well as practicing for many years with longtime friends, Drs. W. Nick Landry III and brothers, Brian A. and Ted Guillory. We have been successful as Schultis, Landry and Guillory OB-GYN because of our deep friendship and respect for each other,” says Dr. Schultis. She remembers crossing the Causeway up to six times in one day in order to accommodate patients who were in labor. She later learned that the staff had a code they used to notify the offices when she was en-route. “The Metairie office would call Mandeville and say, ‘the storm is coming across the lake now.’ For a long time, I thought they were just interested in the weather conditions!” It was not until the arrival of her oldest sons Christian and Rhett— within nine months of each other—that Dr. Schultis slowed her frenetic pace, limiting her practice to the Northshore office. Dr. Schultis explained that it doesn’t matter how many times she’s delivered a baby, she still enjoys being a part of the experience. “Because our practice takes this responsibility so seriously, our intent is to deliver all of our own patients’ babies. If I am available, I go,” she said. Not only has Dr. Schultis delivered thousands of children during her tenure as an OB-GYN, Dr. Schultis also is active in the surgical arena. With medical privileges at St. Tammany Parish Hospital, Lakeview Regional Medical Center and Fairway Medical, Dr. Schultis utilizes robotic surgery and other minimally invasive techniques to improve her patients’ health while minimizing recovery time. She is excited to be working closely with longtime friends, breast specialist Dr. Celeste Lagarde and plastic surgeon Dr. Richard Celantano to expand their selection of facial and body treatments with new and innovative lasers for anti-aging and hair removal.
“The ability to perform surgery was one of the things that attracted me to the field of obstetrics and gynecology. I like to be able to facilitate healing through surgery whenever appropriate. My goal is to help my patients feel good so they can enjoy their lives and their families,” she said. Dr. Schultis certainly takes her own advice when it comes to spending time with family. “I enjoy spending as much time as possible with my sister, Jeffrie Schultis.” In fact, Dr. Schultis met Ty Richardson at Jeffrie’s annual event at the New Orleans Convention Center, The Spice of Life, highlighting women’s business and health issues—leading to their partnership with HTCA. An avid football fan, she and her boys are season ticket holders to both LSU and Saints games. “It was an unwritten rule that Saturdays and Sundays were for us to spend together either watching football or tailgating. I am fortunate, and grateful, that the boys enjoy spending so much time with our family.” “Everything is about family…I love what I do.” Dr. Schultis’ office is located at 110 Lakeview Lane in Covington. You can reach her office at 985-898-1940. For more information on Hormone Therapy Centers of America, visit ht-ca.com.

COVINGTON

7 WRITTEN AND PHOTOS BY JERRY COTTRELL
WHEN VISITING COVINGTON, as soon as you set foot downtown, it doesn’t take long to realize that Covington is a virtual treasure trove filled with charming things to do. Whether you are shopping, enjoying the wonderful food our local restaurants have to offer or just passing time, there are many things to do in this quaint city. Starting on famed 1•Columbia Street, visit the art galleries it is known for, such as the Covington Art Association and Tripolo Gallery, and many retail and antique stores filled with interesting local “treasures.” Numerous restaurants line the street featuring live music and a spirited nightlife.
A visit to 2•H.J. Smith and Sons General Store is like stepping back in time. This Covington institution since 1876 has a Covington history museum located inside and still functions as a general store. Just two blocks east of Columbia Street is the scenic 3•Lee Lane, where you will find more wonderful antique and gift shops perfect for your Christmas shopping. On Saturday mornings, from 8 a.m. to noon, a few blocks north on Columbia Street near City Hall, you can find local farmers selling their produce and goods at the
4•Covington Farmer’s Market. Eggs, goat cheese and fresh vegetables are among the
many delightful commodities being sold in this open market. Live entertainment welcomes you as you browse creating a friendly, festive environment. At the southern end of Columbia Street is the Bogue Falaya River and 5•Columbia Street Landing, the birthplace of Covington and once a proud harbor and dock for schooners and steamers, bringing some of the first settlers to the area. It is now known for its Sunset at The Landing monthly concert series and other gatherings featuring local talent performing live music free of charge. With a quick jaunt around the bend in the river, you enter 6•Bogue Falaya Park. This
6 beautiful open ground is host to many cultural activities such as last month’s Monster Mash, the Chef Soirée Gala in the spring and Louisiana Philharmonic Opera’s Swing in The Pines outdoor series. Its riverbank is a great place to have a picnic as the river gently flows by and its playground is perfect for passing the time with young kids. Located just outside the park, the quaint 7•Christ Episcopal Church built in 1846 is Covington’s oldest public building still in use today. Cruising down the oak-lined Jahncke Avenue to the southern tip of Covington, you will wind your way to 8•Old Landing. Nestled between the Tchefuncte and Bogue Falaya Rivers, this is a great launching point for kayakers and paddle boarders who want to enjoy the peaceful natural setting while exploring the rivers. Speaking of nature, just on the outskirts of Covington on Lowe Davis Road is 9•InstaGator Ranch, which will put you up close and personal with Louisiana’s most ancient resident, the alligator. Take a tour of the farm on protected walkways while safely interacting
with hundreds of reptiles. Children and adults alike love having their photos taken with the smaller ones. The 10•Covington Trailhead is where old Covington becomes new Covington. The old rail lines that once guided trains as they lumbered through the city of Covington, are now home to part of the Tammany Trace. This is the beginning of the 31-mile hike and bike path that winds its way throughout the Northshore. The Trailhead also hosts a free cultural concert series in the spring and fall called Rockin’ the Rails as well as a smaller version of the weekend farmer’s market every Wednesday. The trailhead is always a good place to pass the time on a beautiful day. Another newer addition to Covington, situated at the foot of the Trailhead is Covington’s own microbrewery, the 11 •Covington Brewhouse. Pop in, enjoy a tour by a scientist turned brew master and learn what makes their beer so special. A tour of Covington would be incomplete without mentioning our newest, old jewel, the renovated 12•Southern Hotel. Located
a block south of the Trailhead in the heart of downtown, the recently opened Southern Hotel combines old world charm with new world style. With its picturesque courtyard, modern Cypress Bar and Covington’s own history lining the walls, you will be charmed by its ambiance and décor. The next time you visit Covington, be sure to look around at the history surrounding you. So many little treasures are just waiting for you to discover them.

І LEADERS Mandeville Wins National Google Award
WRITTEN BY DONALD VILLERE, MAYOR OF MANDEVILLE
THE CITY OF MANDEVILLE has just been awarded, “Louisiana’s Digital Capital City” by Google. This e-city award recognizes the strongest online business community in each state. We are excited to have won this award for two years in a row and also the first two consecutive years Google has offered the honor. Last year the award was actually given to our old site, which was packed with information, but needed updating with new technology. In designing our new site, our goal was to serve the public with an even greater amount of information and opportunity than in the past. That was met with success! Visit us at cityofmandeville.com. According to DOTD, the construction of Highway 190 is planning to finalize this month. The roads should be clear sailing and ready for shopping in time for the
Christmas season. Please take time to visit our local businesses and restaurants, especially along Highway 190. As we near the final months of the year, it is important that we enjoy these times with our families and friends, especially those in need. It’s a great time to donate canned goods and items for the homeless to the Samaritan Center, whose supply always runs low during this time of year. Upcoming dates to remember: Get out and vote on Tuesday, November 4, it is an important election for our City. Polls open at 7 a.m. and close at 8 p.m. Remember Veterans Day on November 11! Thank you to all our vets who have given their lives to fight for the freedom we cherish. And finally, Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours!
Thanksgiving Blessings
WRITTEN BY LIZ ANDERSON, PONCHATOULA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
IN THE UNITED STATES, November is the designated month to give gratitude for the gifts of family, community, country and freedom. Each of us has personal blessings for which we are grateful, but the residents of Ponchatoula can be and are thankful for a long list of communal blessings. First, we are thankful for the children of our town as well as the churches, schools, public library and recreation district that support these youngsters. Leaders in these civic and religious institutions recognize that Ponchatoula’s youth are our future and need continual guidance to become active, involved and caring citizens. We are grateful for parents who provide loving homes, as well as moral and ethical instruction, teaching respect for individuals, their community and acts of volunteerism. We are
thankful for the community organizations that give back time, money and resources to those in need. We are thankful for our national, state, and local elected officials who represent their constituents, the people of Ponchatoula, honestly and devotedly, promoting our interests and progress. Lastly, we are thankful for our military men and women, past and present, who have put themselves in harm’s way guarantying our safety as a nation. Thanksgiving has its historical roots in religious, agrarian and cultural traditions and it’s these American traditions we celebrate on this Thanksgiving Day and defend the remainder of the year. So thank you, Ponchatoula and all its residents, for these blessings and others too numerous to list.

PARISH PRESIDENT

LIVE. WORK. EXPLORE. This is St. Tammany Parish in a nutshell. For our residents, it is our way of life. It’s why we choose this Parish as our home. It’s why we are so invested in our communities. So, it is with humble gratitude that I am pleased to announce that the rest of America has noticed as well. St. Tammany Parish has been awarded the Entrepreneurial American Community Award by the group, Partners for Livable Communities. This award acknowledges the entrepreneurial spirit of a community and recognizes communities that are innovators and have successfully found unique solutions to local problems. It is given to only one community in America annually, and we are that community in 2014. Over the next few weeks, Partners for Livable Communities will feature highlights of our Parish
on their website, livable.org/livability-live. These will include our cutting edge Maritime Training Institute in the heart of downtown Covington, the St. Tammany Fishing Pier near Slidell, a testament to perseverance through adversity, and the Community Land Trust, assuring that affordable workforce housing is a permanent and reusable asset here in our community. These topics are a sampling of why we are indeed an Entrepreneurial American Community, but I would like to add one more — our citizens. The people of St. Tammany Parish are responsible stewards of its abundance, who take great care in preserving, maintaining and improving our way of life, and are among the most forward-thinking pacesetters in the nation. Congratulations St. Tammany!
