School performances, the National Anthem, even reruns of Little House on the Date ________________________________________ Prairie make me well up with tears. So the holidays are off the charts. In our family we celebrate a family tradition where we read a Christmas story every night over dinner, during the Catholic season of Advent. My favorite story is about a boy named Wallace Purling, described as a nine year old second grader who should have been in the fourth grade. He was “big and clumsy and slow of movement and mind.” In the story, he plays the Innkeeper in the school’s Christmas pageant that year. His only job was to turn away from the inn, Joseph and his wife Mary, who were seeking lodging for the night. At first, Wallace said forcefully, “No! Be gone!” Joseph asked again, and again, he is refused. Joseph placed his arm around Mary and started to walk sadly away. Wallace could hardly stand it as he watched them go. With tears in his eyes he called out, “Don’t go, Joseph. Bring Mary Colors represented on this proof are an approximation of actual printed material. back. This story embodies the spirit of Christmas. This issue does too. Find numerous ways to make some holiday memories with you family in our Holiday Festivities Guide. If you plan to celebrate the season on the party circuit, turn to our Fashion Editor’s Picks for some glitzy ideas. And finally, all of us here at Sophisticated Woman thank you for spending another year with us. We wish you health and happiness this holiday and in the New Year. And may Christmas bring out the Wallace Purling in all of us.

A pretty bra and panty set for everyday or party wear is a real confidence booster. I like to say, “Life is too short to wear ugly underwear.” Seriously. It took me until my mid-forties to realize this. Wearing elegant, beautiful bras and panties is a treat I love to indulge in. It’s not fattening like chocolate and much less addictive than chardonnay. Confident, powerful and special. That’s how I feel in pretty lingerie.

The Southern Oaks Family Stacey Asaro & Shalea Asaro Madorin
Sophisticated Woman | December 2010
WRITTEN BY AMY BOUTON

WHILE MOST LITTLE GIRLS were playing dolls and dress-up, Shalea Asaro Madorin and her sister Stacey Asaro spent their childhoods immersed in real-life fairy tale weddings. Southern Oaks Plantation is not just the family business; it is where the girls and their parents spent countless hours together, while unexpectedly becoming familiar faces in the New Orleans wedding industry. There, they mastered this unique niche of the customer service business from the ground up. More importantly, Southern Oaks Plantation is the place where they formed the tightly woven familial bond they still have today. “It was great for us because it was our second home,” says Stacey. “We
spent so much time here together. My first memories are of cooking gumbo with my Mom in the kitchen at Southern Oaks.” When Shalea was eight years old and just before Stacey was born, their parents, Bobby and an expectant Sue Asaro, left the security of their medical careers, and took a giant leap of faith. They bought a neglected Southern home on Hayne Boulevard in New Orleans, brimming with allure and potential, but in dire need of tender loving care. Against the advice of many well-meaning family members, they poured into it their own money and sweat equity and transformed it into a full-service Southern wedding venue. “I was really able to see the evolution of the whole business,” Shalea says. “I did my homework, ate dinner, and played here with Stacey when she was a baby. This is where we learned to swim and roller skate. I even learned to drive here! This was our life. My parents may have been scared, but to me it was a great adventure.” Today, Southern Oaks Plantation is a bride’s wedding fantasy brought to life. Attention to every detail is paramount to the Asaro family. From the time a bride chooses Southern Oaks as a venue, until the last guest leaves the grounds, every element of the event warrants the attention of the hand-picked Southern Oaks staff. “When a bride comes in, I make her feel like she is a part of my family,” Stacey says. “If your wedding is here, you are basically walking into our home.” Shalea remembers many days and nights as a child at Southern Oaks, watching her Mom and Dad and learning from their standard of excellence. “They instilled in us the importance of good planning, leadership, and taking care of little details,” she says. “We know no matter how small, the details matter to the bride. Her wedding day is something she’s dreamed about forever, and it is up to us to make her dream come true.” From the ceremony to the music; from the cake to the food; from transportation around the grounds to the atmosphere of the entire property, Southern Oaks is an all-inclusive wedding venue. Hosting local brides as well as destination weddings, Stacey says people are always amazed at the intricately detailed list they follow for the wedding day. “We want the bride to relax and enjoy her day, instead of wondering if it is time for the first dance, or time to cut the cake, or

Some were even flower girls in past ceremonies here, and come back to us years later for their own weddings. We laugh with our brides and we cry with them. time to throw the bouquet. We make sure all these things happen at the appropriate moment. We act as more than event coordinators— brides consider us their personal wedding planners.” Kyle Madorin, Shalea’s husband, serves as director of ceremonies. His role during each celebration is to keep the bride happy, calm and on track on the most important day of her life. “He is perfect for this job. The brides love him,” Shalea says. “It helps to have someone so calm and reassuring guiding you through your wedding day.” Shalea is also introducing her two young sons to the family business early and often. “We are raising another generation at Southern Oaks.” The regal home sits on three acres among live oaks. A majestic fountain sits on the sprawling front lawn, in contrast to the whimsical, enchanting swing suspended from a live oak tree. As you step into the marble entryway, the signature wedding cake scent of Southern Oaks and the winding staircase in a soothing ivory tone, provide a feast for the senses. The interior is awash in lavish elegance, set in neutral tones. From the main dining room is a bird’s eye view of the spectacular swimming pool and outdoor patio. Off of the main entryway sits the photography room, where the bridal party is sequestered and spoiled while all the necessary wedding photos are captured. Complete with its own seating area, bartender and open bar serving premium liquor and hors d’oeuvres, the bridal party stays intact so that formal pictures are concluded quickly. A doorman in proper Southern attire (complete with top hat) greets every guest upon arrival. Brides can choose extras like a horse-drawn carriage or a fireworks display to round out their fantastical day. Southern Oaks Plantation offers a stunning Southern fantasy wedding venue and two generations of experience, culminating in a quarter of a century of impeccable service and accommodations. Shalea and Stacey continue to bring a fresh perspective to their family’s tried and true recipe for success, keeping Southern Oaks Plantation a traditional favorite with new-fashioned flair. “We form special relationships with

holiday Gifts for eveyone on your list! Best The Northshore’s
THIS HOLIDAY SEASON we will be giving thanks for many blessings, our health being one of the most precious. Good health allows us to truly enjoy our other gifts, such as family, friends, our homes and the world around us. We thrive on our connectivity to our world, the constant input of visual, auditory and tactile data which help us manipulate and appreciate our surroundings. One of our most precious gifts is our sight. The elegant and beautiful visual system compares to a piece of classical music, with intricate connections flowing from one segment to another. Each is so different from the other, yet harmonious in the way they work together, resulting in our abilty to see motion in real-time. I am very excited to begin incorporating breakthroughs from this year’s annual retina meeting, held recently. A telescopic lens implant will greatly help those legally blind from macular degeneration. The approval of injectable agents will allow the reversal of effects of ocular blood occlusions, sometimes called ocular strokes. New dry eye medications and therapies will help alleviate pain and discomfort. The use of a new metabolic mapping unit will denote how your health is directly affecting your visual system. A new telemedicine retinal camera has FDA approval with our location chosen as a regional reading center. With diabetes as the leading cause of blindness, this will help diagnose diabetic eye diseases prior to damage. The newer potential treatments for retinitis pigmentosa and dry age-related macular degeneration, brings new hope for these individuals as well. Great strides are being made in the diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases through medical research. I wish you and your loved ones a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

I suggest the following texting etiquette: Do not drink and text. Do not send messages better said aloud (i.e. your dog died.) When you receive a text clearly not intended for you—let the sender know, immediately. Do not ignore people you are with by carrying on private texting conversations. Do not drive and text. Do not drink, drive and text. Just like you would excuse yourself to make a telephone call, excuse yourself to make a text. Think of texting as documentation. The Ten Commandments came to us by way of texting. When you text, you are creating a record and as such, statements about others could be misconstrued as libel. The seeming anonymity of texting is disarming. To verify time of text, phone records may be accessed. In traffic violations, this documentation can be helpful or potentially damaging. Texting is great in places where talking aloud may be intrusive, such as the hospital. Texting allows for quiet, one-to-one conversation. Happy Holidays. God Bless.

Fanny or Face: Prevent Aging, Stay Lean
2/3 Junior Page Non Bleed—5.0536” x 8.875”
RECENTLY I READ a fitness magazine and an article quoted a famous actress, whose name now escapes me, saying, “As a woman gets older she has to chose between her fanny or her face.” What does that mean? She was referring to the fact that as women age, or anyone for that matter, we lose collagen, that plumpness that makes us look so radiant and youthful. Then, as we age and we work harder to stay fit and maintain low body fat, we lose more fullness in our faces that can make us look drawn and older than our chronological age. But, what if I were to tell you that you didn’t have to choose between having the body of your dreams or a beautiful youthful face? Collagen production slows as intrinsic aging begins in our early to mid 20’s. Typically, we are not supposed to notice these signs until decades later but with society’s lifestyle today, people are aging even more rapidly. Since collagen fibers are made mostly of protein, hydroxylysine and hydroxyproline (also known as lysine and proline), there is support showing that foods high in lysine and proline can be of great aid in collagen support. So, where can you find it? Look for these amino acids in mostly lean proteins with fish being especially concentrated in lysine. Also in egg whites, soy products (edamame, silk milk, tofu), beans, legumes, salmon, lean fowl and wheat germ. Overall protein content is very important and you will most likely need to go above standard Food Pyramid guidelines of 46g a day for women and 56g a day for men. Avoid any kind of processed meat, such as bacon, hot dogs or deli meats that are loaded with preservatives and salt that will do nothing but pull moisture from your skin.

THE TREMENDOUS SENSE of community here on the Northshore is evident year-round, but something about the holidays heightens that feeling. This year, immerse yourself in the spirit of the season with one or more of the countless happenings in and around our community. If shopping unleashes your seasonal folly, Covington’s Christmas in the Country, which kicked off in late November, offers “old world” shopping every Saturday through Christmas Eve. For the art lover on your list, the Slidell Art League made up of 200 local artists, will host its annual Christmas in the Depot Art Exhibition every Tuesday through Saturday from December 3 through the 21. Christmas themed art and artists’ supplies will be sold. Visit www.slidellartleague.info to find out more. Madisonville hosts their annual “Merry Madisonville,” starting at 1 p.m.
on December 5 with a Christmas parade departing from the Maritime Museum. The parade ends at City Hall where the crowd will gather to greet Santa and Mrs. Clause as they come down the river. When Santa makes his way to Town Hall, his workshop gets into full swing, with crafts for the kids and stories from Mrs. Clause. The event culminates at 5 p.m. in the lighting of the tree and Christmas caroling. Madisonville Chamber President Michelle Vanderbrook wants to remind everyone that this year’s event will also be a food drive, so make sure to bring a non-perishable food item. “I think this is a really great way to enjoy the holiday spirit and to give back.” Hammond will kick off the season with its 52nd annual Christmas parade themed “Feliz Navidad” on December 4. Downtown will come alive at 5 p.m. On December 3 at 6 p.m., Ponchatoula Mayor Bob Zabbia will light the official

Cutting Edge Canine Rehab South Paws Veterinary Rehabilitation & Sports Medicine Center

ANYONE WHO HAS EVER experienced an orthopedic injury knows that physical therapy is a vital component of the rehabilitation process. Well, the same principle holds true for animals. At the South Paws Veterinary Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine Center, pet owners now have a place to help their animals recover from orthopedic and neurological surgeries. The new rehab facility is part of the South Paws Veterinary Surgical Specialists center, where Robert Hancock, DVM, ACVS Board Certified Surgeon (better known as “Dr. Bob”) and his team have practiced since this last April. “The rehab center is a perfect complement to the surgical practice,” Dr. Bob explained. “We perform so many orthopedic surgeries that it makes sense be involved with transitioning from post-operative recovery to full rehabilitation.” He joked that the paint had barely dried on the walls of South Paws when everything fell into place—from both a staffing and a space standpoint. When surgical resident George Edwards, DVM and his wife, Sara Catherine Edwards, DVM joined the staff in July, Dr. Bob knew the time was right to move forward on the expansion. “We made the commitment that if we were going to do it, we were going to go all out,” Dr. Bob said. In addition to an underwater treadmill, the facility also boasts a laser unit, ultrasound and dry treadmill. South Paws is one of only a handful of facilities in the Gulf South that features all of these technologies in one place. Yet, its technology is only a small component of what sets South Paws apart. Sara Catherine, a licensed veterinarian, has also been specially trained in animal physical rehabilitation through intensive coursework at the University of Tennessee. Animal physical therapy is so new that the American College of Veterinary Medicine has just recently established a specialty discipline in this area. “Veterinarians now realize that in many cases, physical therapy is as important as the surgical procedure itself,” Sara Catherine said.

“The rehab center is a perfect complement to the surgical practice,” Dr. Bob explained. “We perform so many orthopedic surgeries that it makes sense be involved with transitioning from post-operative recovery to full rehabilitation.” Owners may accompany their pets during all therapy sessions. The underwater treadmill is encased in clear glass, allowing the owners a direct line of sight to their pets. Both Dr. Bob and Sara Catherine stressed that physical therapy is not exclusive to surgical patients. They see sporting animals (field trial/agility dogs) to help with their conditioning and strength. Additionally, South Paws offers weight loss/exercise programs to help animals with obesity issues. “If you think your pet would benefit from physical therapy, consult with your veterinarian for a referral to South Paws,” Dr. Bob said. Sara Catherine added that referrals can come by and tour the facility anytime for a first-hand look at the animal rehabilitation process. “We have an open door policy,” she said. South Paws has developed rehabilitation packages based on 30-minute multi-modal sessions to make it more convenient for the pet owners. Sessions may be divided using multiple modalities for each patient. For instance, one typical package allows for ten 30-minute sessions over a 3-4 week period. During this time, the physical therapist uses multiple modalities tailored to each pet’s specific health condition. Packages are broken down into two, five and ten session packages. Additionally, there are weight loss/conditioning packages available. Discounted boarding is also offered for the convenience of out of town owners. “The rehabilitation facility is the perfect adjunct to the surgical excellence we provide at South Paws,” Dr. Bob said. “It fits our philosophy of extending care beyond the surgical procedure and giving our patients the best possible recovery.” South Paws is located at 2631 N. Causeway Blvd. in Mandeville. Call 985-809-1590 or log on to www.SouthPawsVetSpecialists.com for more information.
Sophisticated Woman | December 2010
“Physical therapy was something that was barely covered when I was in veterinary school just two years ago,” she said. “I became interested in it during my surgical rotation when I had a dog with a slipped disc (a small dog with a sudden onset of neurologic dysfunction in the rear). While I worked with him to regain motor function of his pelvic limbs, through movement exercises, I fell in love with both the dog and the process.” At South Paws, Sara Catherine provides consults for all orthopedic and neurological surgical cases. After assessing a patient, she puts together a detailed plan of therapy utilizing a variety of modalities— ranging from low level passive range of motion, laser therapy and therapeutic ultrasound to the underwater treadmill. “Both the laser and ultrasound generate heat, but they also serve different functions,” Sara Catherine said. “Laser therapy is most often used to promote bone and wound healing and faster return to function for soft tissues. The therapeutic ultrasound brings heat to muscles and tendons, which allows for better range of motion and pliability of the muscles.” According to Sara Catherine, the underwater treadmill is the best tool in rehabilitation therapy. The buoyancy it provides takes the weight off the joints, as well as the surgical repairs, thus reducing pain and helping support mobility. “We are able to exercise post-op patients safely in the underwater treadmill, with less concern for injury or damage to the surgeon’s repairs,” she said. In order to encourage pet owners to utilize the recommended therapy regimen, South Paws offers one free underwater treadmill session to all orthopedic/neurologic surgical patients. “Once they see how well their pet responds to the therapy, most people are committed and excited about our physical therapy recommendations,” Dr. Bob said. “These dogs have so much fun here. It’s something new and different for them.”

Phillips, Diane. Happy Holidays from the Diva of Do-Ahead: A Year of Feasts to Celebrate with Family and Friends. Boston: Harvard Common Press, 2006. DECEMBER IS the month for many things: gift giving, family reunions, parties and a general message that this is a time where people should be happy. However, for some people it can be a lonely time, one where festivity reinforces a sense of isolation. It can also be a challenging time for people who just don’t have the money to meet either their own feelings of generosity or the pressure created by the marketing of consumer products. And despite all the idealized wishes for everyone in the family to get together and get along, there can be an underbelly of tension as some relatives rediscover why they don’t see each other that often throughout the rest of the year, as well as some wishing to recapture feelings (real or fantasized) of how things were “back in the old days.”

THE HISTORICAL NOVEL, I am Madame X, is a pleasure to read. The narrator—Madame X— carries the reader on a journey to antebellum Louisiana, to Paris after the War Between the States and into the American arts scene of the 1880’s. Mandeville— A Modern City With an Old Soul
28
AS ONE OF THE oldest inhabited cities on the Northshore, Mandeville holds an abundance of history—both storied and scenic. Historically known as weekend and summer getaways for wealthy New Orleanians, and then as a bedroom community for Northshore commuters, Mandeville has since evolved into a city with its own identity. Its nationally recognized public school system and pristine parks and recreation facilities make it a haven for young families. And while it is still home to commuters, many people are choosing to live and to work in Mandeville. Excellent shopping, a vibrant nightlife and access to beautiful Lake Pontchartrain all add to the area’s appeal. Pelican Park is the place for recreational sports in Mandeville. Flanked by what has been dubbed “St. Tammany’s Secret Garden” (better known as Northlake Nature Center) on one side and thick woods on the other, wildlife sightings are an additional perk when you head out to a game. Recreational baseball, soccer, football, softball, basketball, volleyball and cheerleading round out the sports menu for children. Adult classes and leisure courses are offered as well. In addition to sports fields and gymnasiums, Pelican Park hosts countless special events in its 46,000 square foot Castine Center. A skateboard park, batting cages and the recently opened dog park make the park a family destination. Just across the highway and down the road a stretch sits Fontainebleau State Park. A favorite for campers, birdwatchers and sunbathers, the 2,800 acres of Fontainebleau offer a variety of natural resources. Seated on the shores of Lake Pontchartrain, visitors can sunbathe in the morning, take a nature hike in the afternoon, and head to one of the newly rebuilt cabins to settle in for the evening. In the heart of Old Mandeville, sits the Mandeville Trailhead. Home to concerts, a water spout park and the Farmers market every Saturday morning (9 a.m.—rain or shine), the trailhead is where the Mandeville community gathers for entertainment and fellowship both day and night. Lake Pontchartrain sits just blocks away from the trailhead. It is a picturesque spot to take in a sunset, watch the waterfowl or view the sailboats that dot the horizon. Walkways along the shore beckon walkers, runners and even the occasional fisherman. During the upcoming holiday season, the lakefront becomes the stage for the city’s annual Winter on the Water celebration, culminating in the annual Christmas Parade. To find out more you can access the city’s newly revamped website www.cityofmandeville.com. While Mandeville progresses along with its growing population,

With modern conveniences like shopping, impressive schools and recreational facilities, and a modern and technologically capable city government, Mandeville has managed to roll with the changes. However, lush untouched natural preserves, old-fashioned community gatherings and historic traditions keep her rooted in the history that residents continue to embrace.

І leadeRs A Look Back at 2010
WRITTEN BY FREDDY DRENNAN, MAYOR OF SLIDELL
AS 2011 QUICKLY approaches, Slidell continues great progress in 2010. More than five years after Hurricane Katrina, Slidell is coming back stronger than ever. In March, the first of two new municipal offices was completed. Slidell City Council and Administrative Center, a 32,970 square-foot, 4.3 million facility was the first to open its doors to the public. The Slidell Technology and Cultural Arts Center, is currently under construction on Bouscaren Street and is scheduled for completion in early 2011. In April, the Slidell Municipal Airport opened a new 16 unit tee hangar. In June, the Slidell Animal Shelter opened its doors. The $2.5 million facility was made possible by Noah’s Wish with funds administered by the Greater New Orleans Foundation. In July, the curtains fell on the Slidell Municipal
Auditorium. Former Mayor Ben Morris, diligently fought with FEMA for two long years to receive funding for a new facility. Now, a new $6.9 million FEMA funded, state-of-the-art auditorium is currently under construction. Completion is slated for the end of 2011. In August, we dedicated of Fleur de Triomphe—a sculpture that sits in Memorial Plaza at Heritage Park. The memorial was created and donated to the city by John Doherty, a former Slidell resident who now lives in Colorado. The new $2.3 million FEMA funded Slidell Senior Center should open in the first quarter of next year. 2011 will be a great time to live and work in Slidell. This holiday, please shop locally. In these difficult economic times, our local businesses need your support. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
‘Tis the Season in Ponchatoula
WRITTEN BY APRIL WEHRS EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR PONCHATOULA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
THE RESULTS OF the Census are scheduled for release in early 2011. Many are anticipating the population growth in Ponchatoula and the surrounding area. With the new numbers, comes the need for new district lines to be drawn. The city has begun preparing for the process. Tangipahoa is currently served by three State Senators and five State Representatives. State Senator Jack Donahue and State Representative Steve Pugh spoke to a full house at a monthly business luncheon in November. Senator Donahue addressed state budget proposals, while Representative Pugh addressed the anticipated changes the census will bring. Once the proposals are delivered on redistricting, a road show is planned to bring awareness to the public and what it means in terms of their representation.
Friday Night Lights is an opportunity for those who enjoy the downtown shops and the glow of the lights. The community is invited to attend the Christmas Lighting on December 3. Downtown businesses will extend shop hours on the 3, 10 and 17 for this event. Visitors are welcome and encouraged to bring their friends and family. The unique offerings of the smaller businesses are affordable and unusual. Santa returns to the Collinswood Museum for the 10th and 17th, along with choirs and other entertainment. Snow is even planned for the Collinswood courtyard. Lights, the parade, extended hours and the warmest season’s greetings await you in Ponchatoula.

Slow Down and Enjoy
WRITTEN BY KEVIN DAVIS, ST. TAMMANY PARISH PRESIDENT
THE END OF THE year is always a wonderful time to enjoy many of the special events the season has to offer. We have a number of holiday concerts and events throughout St. Tammany. Our parish boasts celebrations ranging from The Nutcracker ballet, to high school holiday concerts, to a performance of A Christmas Carol at a local theater. Check the Fall/Winter Cultural Season Guide for St. Tammany, or visit the calendar at www.stpgov.org for upcoming events. In the anticipation and rush of the holiday season, we often get caught up in the preparations and shopping. These are enjoyable and certainly make the holidays fun. Sometimes, however, it’s nice to slow down and take time to remember what this season ultimately means to us.
Regardless of religious affiliation or the way you may celebrate the holidays, it always comes down to the people in our lives being the most important thing. Family and friends are who we count on, who we spend time with, and who we love. The holidays should be a time of refreshing for us and a time to appreciate those people in our lives. Take some time this holiday season to slow down and enjoy what our home has to offer. Take a stroll on the Mandeville lakefront. Browse the shops in Olde Towne Slidell. Visit one of the Christmas tree farms in Folsom. Most of all—enjoy each other. Let us be thankful for the relationships we are blessed with every day. Those are ultimately better than any gift we could ever receive. Happy Holidays.
Future Great Moms and Dads
WRITTEN BY CANDACE WATKINS, MAYOR OF COVINGTON
LAST MONTH I wrote about the upcoming Internet fundraising campaign for the Covington Boys and Girls Club. The Unit Board has been working closely with the new Corporate CEO Joe Cordova who recently relocated to New Orleans to rebuild all the clubs in the Southeast Region. The Boys and Girls Club is there to provide kids from six to 17 with a safe, positive place to be after school. Programs include; Power Hour where they get tutoring and homework help; Club Tech where they learn about digital literacy; and Smart Moves, Smart Girls and Passport to Manhood, where their self esteem is strengthened and they learn handle the challenges teens face. The arts, health and fitness, character building and many other aspects of positive self-development are promoted at the Boy and Girls
Club. The Unit Board is also negotiating for a new and improved location. Funding for our club is sought through the United Way, foundations and other grants, and community support. We need to broaden that base of support. So please keep your eye out for an email concerning this issue that will contain a video explaining more. You may email me at mayorwatkins@covla.com so that I can be sure you get the email. You may have seen an article last month by Denzel Washington in Parade Magazine about his experience with Boys and Girls Club. Many famous people attribute their success to the Boys and Girls Club. Right now, we just want to prepare our children to be future great Moms and Dads. You can help make that happen.

Holiday Shopping—Buy Local
32
WRITTEN BY DAWN SHARPE-BRACKETT, EAST ST. TAMMANY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE CEO
THE EAST ST. TAMMANY Chamber of Commerce prides itself on local businesses support, community prosperity, and enhancement of our quality of life. The holiday season is here, and our local economy depends on the citizens of St. Tammany to spend their money in this region. When the community prospers, opportunities increase for new businesses and industry to move into our area. This can create new jobs, improve home sales and provide prospects to move into empty business locations. For every 100 dollars spent at a locally owned business, 45 dollars goes back into the local economy. When you shop locally you get better service, employees who often have a better understanding of the products, and people who take the time to get to know their customers. Locally owned businesses support local
community groups on an average of 350 percent more than non-locally owned businesses. These businesses are owned by people who are more invested in our future. From cafés to fine dining, from antique shops to art galleries, from spas to health clubs. You can find everything you need to satisfy your professional and family needs in St. Tammany parish. Invigorate our local economy by spending your hard earned dollars to supporting local businesses. Show your pride and support—“Buy Local.” In our growing community, the focus of the chamber is to help promote our region for new business and retain current businesses. We provide a voice for businesses and networking and educational opportunities for members. For membership information, please visit our website at www.estchamber.com.
