Steps to a Successful College Career FROM SIGNING UP for the right courses, to taking the right exams, to finding the right university—the path to higher education can feel like an obstacle course for both students and parents. If your child is hoping to attend a college or university, a high grade point average (GPA) will only carry them so far. Your child needs to find a way to stand out from the crowd. Excellence in athletics, academic clubs and civic organizations, as well as experience in volunteer work and part-time jobs, will help. Your college-bound student needs to raise the bar even higher by taking honors or other advanced courses. By doing well in these courses, colleges will view your child as well-qualified for college-level work.
Many loans and grants are increasingly based on academic merit rather than financial need. You can also go online to the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC), located at www.nacacnet.org, for additional ideas. It is one of the most effective online resources you will come across. Many loans and grants are increasingly based on academic merit rather than financial need. This is why it is critical that your child develop good study skills and get extra help, if needed, to fix any issues that may impact his or her GPA. It is also very important to do everything possible to prepare for the ACT and SAT exams (two high stakes exams that have a huge impact on college admissions). High performance on these tests plus a high GPA can lead to significant opportunities for scholarships!

NOT ONLY IS FEBRUARY the month of Valentine’s day, sweet hearts and romance, it also happens to be American Heart Month. Heart disease, an umbrella term referring to a variety of diseases affecting the heart, is the number one cause of death in America. It’s time to take action against this epidemic and the month of February is an appropriate time to start. Supplementing with Omega-3 Dermatologists are often aske and Co enzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a great way to “What will is the do this. These supplements help best main- sunscreen? tain a healthy cardiovascular system and prevent heart disease. Omega-3 is an essential fatty acid, which means it is essential to the body but the body does not produce it. Fish and flax seed oil supplements are ways of obtaining Omega-3. Studies have shown several cardiovascular benefits from taking these supplements regularly. They have been shown to reverse and prevent symptoms of heart disease such as high blood pressure, arrhythmia, growth of plaque in the arteries and high triglyceride levels. Omega-3 has also been linked to reducing the risk of heart attacks and strokes. CoQ10 is a strong antioxidant and another heart-smart supplement that will maintain and restore cardiovascular health. If there is not a sufficient amount of CoQ10 in a person’s body, their heart will not function properly. This supplement has been known to improve the energy of the heart, lower blood pressure and increase the ability of the heart to contract. Studies have also shown CoQ10 to be an effective treatment for angina, hypertension and heart failure. In order to maximize cardiovascular health, these two supplements should be combined with a heart-smart diet and a cardiovascular workout regime. And remember to start showing your heart a little love during the month of February.

COLETTE REINE IS A WOMAN WHO PUTS HER FAMILY FIRST, likes to hike and fish, and relishes in the beauty of nature. Growing up, though, she always knew she would one day have her own business. With the full support of her husband Brian and their five children, Colette designed from conception to completion, Reine Diamonds and Fine Jewelry store. She attended the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) in New York, where she completed her Diamond Certification at the top of her class. Colette then searched the country and the world to find only the finest gems to carry in her store. “Brian is a driving force in my life. He sees that I can do things even if I don’t. He has taught me to recognize my own potential.” When you step through the etched glass doors into Reine Diamonds and Fine Jewelry in Slidell, the serenity of the soothing shades of greens and grays, the glistening cut-glass suspended globe lights poised above the center display case, coupled with the stunning and seemingly endless selection of fine diamonds and jewelry, immediately envelop you into the atmosphere Colette has always envisioned. “We wanted a contemporary store that welcomed every guest. We realize that consumers today are educated and techno-savvy. We also realize that there are clients who will come in and seek out a knowledgeable
expert. We strived to strike a balance between the two and accommodate the needs of anyone who walks through these doors.” Reine offers creations by craftsmen like Steven Kretchmer, whose patented Tension-Set™ jewelry is known for its striking simplicity as each stone is held in place by a compression force of 12,000 pounds per square inch. There are no prongs, so the gemstone’s brilliance takes center stage. The Inner Secrets collection by Kretchmer features a layered engraved design that is magnetically held in place, but when separated reveals an engraved personal message. “We wanted to bring to the Northshore, quality pieces that you cannot find anywhere around here. We chose vendors from far and wide who carry more than your typical solitaire. We even have our own creations that speak to the personality of our unique region.” For locals who love everything NOLA, the stunning fleur des lis collection features several pieces created by Reine jewelry designers. For lovers of Pandora beads, Colette is thrilled to offer the largest selection in the region. “The beauty of a gift of Pandora is that this is a progressive gift. It is so sweet and personal. You can add beads for every occasion and create a gift unique to that person whether it is your mom, your sister or that high school graduate.”

They often spend time together at their home in Slidell, or soaking in nature at their ranch in Mississippi. “It is just a full rich life that is completely separate and different from our work,” Colette says. “We are all part of this big, blended family now. It seems like we have always been this way. We are each other’s lives. We feel so blessed.” Reine Diamonds & Fine Jewelry is located in La Reine Olde Town Center. Cutting edge technology like Counter Sketch, a computer program that reveals a virtual version of your own creation, allows anyone to come in and create a piece custom to their own taste as well as their budget. “You can come in with a picture of an engagement ring, for example, and we can build the ring you want on the Counter Sketch while you watch. We can add stones, enlarge stones and remove stones, until we get it just right. You can even see the ring on a virtual hand. The program will quote a price and we can adjust components of the piece to fit your budget.” Custom and semi-custom creations are really complements to the significant jewelry selection available in the store. Expect to find an ample, fluid selection ranging from the most simple pendant for that first love, to affordable pieces that look brilliant, to the most refined and exquisite pieces you can imagine. Men’s and ladies’ watch lines like Movado, Bertolucci and the upscale Citizen’s Signature are among the additional luxurious selections. “We want to engage the technical client, but we also want to educate the client who needs answers. Jewelry is such an intimate, personal purchase. We have a veteran jeweler on staff to walk you through your choices,” Colette says. “Bob Glazer is a seasoned jeweler who has been in this industry for four decades. He has done everything in this business from bench work, to sales, to jewelry expertise.” Colette’s brother, Todd Corwin holds extensive gemology certifications and acts as manager. There is also an in-house jeweler who performs all of the bench work for Reine. Colette and her husband Brian enjoy the serenity of the Northshore and the closeknit fabric of the Slidell community. Meet Kim!
Hygenist for our Mandeville location.
Kim Icamina, RDH, says the part of her job she relishes the most, is teaching patients habits that will last a lifetime. “I love it! I love when I have a patient that comes in and you totally reform their habits and their mouth becomes healthy.” She says even very young children can learn a proper tooth care routine. These habits, along with regular dental exams, can be instrumental in preventing dental health problems throughout their lives. “In both children and adults, we want to see you at least two times a year. If something pops up in between visits and we can catch it early, chances are we can fix it right away,” Kim says. “Brushing at night is especially important. That is when the bacteria in your mouth say ‘I have the whole place to myself.’” Kim graduated from LSU School of Dentistry in 1993 and you can meet her at Mandeville Dental Care.

Keep Those Knees Healthy THIS TIME OF YEAR, knee problems start to occur more frequently. Why? This is when the first seasonal skiers come home with their strains and sprains, then as we get the occasional spring-like days, people start to jog again. All of these new activities can bring a person to their knees—literally. So often, knee pain can be avoided. Why face the possibility of suffering knee injuries when there are relatively simple exercises that can prevent them? If you are concerned that you already have a knee problem, you should see a health professional prior to exercising. There are three components to a knee injury prevention program. These include, stretching, strengthening and proprioception training. There are four basic muscle groups that need to be stretched to keep the knees healthy; the hamstring, quads, calf, hip and Iliotibial Band (ITB) groups. Make sure your program includes a stretch for each of these. For optimal health in the knees, ensure that you strengthen quad, hamstring, calf and core muscles. Just being strong and flexible often isn’t enough to prevent an injury. Your body must also be coordinated enough to handle the activity. This is where proprioception training comes in. A very simple method is to initially, pretend to do the activity in slow motion, progressing over the course of days to normal speed. Alternatively some activities can be performed with the eyes closed (such as squats for skiing). You may even consider using progressively heavier resistance as you prepare for the task at hand. A certified personal trainer should be consulted before you begin any prevention program whether you have had a previous injury or not.

Haunted Lives, Haunted Loves WRITTEN BY IZZY PERCY
ISABEL ALLENDE IS one of those rare writers that seem to come only once in a generation. Allende first burst on to the literary scene in 1982 with the literary blockbuster The House of the Spirits. With her most recent book, Island Beneath the Sea, she has managed to recapture the magic that made readers all over the world fall in love with her writing. In Island Beneath the Sea, Allende brings us the story of Zarité, known as Tete, and her master Toulouse Valmorain. The story of Zarité and Toulouse is set on the island of Saint-Domingue against the backdrop of the Haitian Revolution. This is a story about Zarité’s struggle for her freedom and that of her child. Zarité bought by Theislast thing that you Toulouse as a housemaid for his wife, who to get keeps injured in your slowly goes mad, whileisToulouse Zarité as his concubine. The story spans over exercise program… four decades and goes from Saint-Domingue to New Orleans. Valmorain is like most men of his time; he is a white sugar plantation owner, and a member of the ruling class. As such, he sees Zarité as disposable. Through her elegant style and poetic language, Allende shows us the courage of the human spirit to overcome even the most horrendous of circumstances to find love and meaning in a world not always kind to those outside of the ruling class. Allende is at her peak in this novel, painting a portrait of the human spirit at its best and worst during a time of war and a time of peace. Island Beneath the Sea is a must read book for all Isabel Allende fans and for those who have never read her work. Island Beneath the Sea by Isabel Allende is available at St. Tammany Parish Libraries as a regular or large print book, audio book or from local bookstores.

Mardi Gras on the Northshore
26
MARDI GRAS MEANS different things to different people. Universally we know it means the perpetuation of a storied and rich tradition, spanning centuries. Mardi Gras historians cite the French, the Romans, even tribal rituals as possible springboards for the custom. The most celebrated history of Mardi Gras throughout this region though, is as the final days of revelry, merriment and wantonness beginning on January 6th, from the Catholic feast of the Epiphany (Twelfth Night) and culminating at midnight on Fat Tuesday (Mardi Gras day). After weeks of decadence and festivities, Catholics repent on Ash Wednesday and begin the Lenten season. Fasting and prayer take center stage, leading up to Easter, as the revelry ends. Mardi Gras has come a long way since the
19th century where masked men walking in groups or riding in carriages pulled by horses, comprised the parades. Floats today can hold hundreds of riders, while bands and dance teams fill the gaps in between floats. Costumes are planned up to a year in advance and opulent Mardi Gras balls honor the royal court. Organizations like Slidell’s first Mardi Gras krewe, the Krewe of Perseus, was chartered 41 years ago. Since then, countless krewes and marching clubs have dipped their toes in the Mardi Gras pool to offer Northshore residents their own brand of Mardi Gras celebration: still deeply rooted in tradition— but with its own unique flair. In Mandeville this year, the Krewe of Eve celebrates their 25th anniversary with the theme “Eve’s 25th
King Cake Lore
Masquerade,” while in Slidell, the Krewe of Titans rolls for the very first time. Parades like Push-Mow in Abita Springs offer everyone the chance to have the parade experience. The king and queen of Krewe De Paws in Slidell will likely have fur, as its stars are dogs. The Krewes of Bilge in Slidell and Tchefuncte in Madisonville, parade on the waterways and use boats as floats. From Mandeville, to Covington to Slidell and in between, whether you are looking for a traditional parade with double-decker floats, and marching bands from almost anywhere; or just looking to march in a parade with your decorated push lawn mower, or see your dog adorned like royalty, you will find it here. Parades kick off here on the Northshore on February 6th with the Krewe of Claude in Slidell, and culminate with Mardi Gras day in downtown Covington.
THE FEAST OF THE EPIPHANY on January 6th kicks off Twelfth Night, or King’s Day, and king cake is rolled out for the Mardi Gras season. The king cake is said to be circular in shape to represent the unity of faiths, and the circular path the Magi took to find baby Jesus in order to fool King Herod who intended to kill the child. Inside the first king cakes, a coin or bean was hidden. Whoever found it was said to have good fortune throughout the year. Today, a baby is traditionally hidden inside king cakes in Louisiana to represent baby Jesus. Whoever gets the baby is said to have good fortune, and they buy the next king cake. The colors on the king cake represent, justice (purple), power (gold) and faith (green). According to Mardi Gras historians, the Grand Duke Alexis Alexandrovitch Romanoff of Russia chose these colors during a visit he made to New Orleans in 1872.

І leaders Have You Thanked a Police Officer Today?
WRITTEN BY CANDACE WATKINS, MAYOR OF COVINGTON
WHOEVER THINKS THAT Covington feels like “Mayberry” by chance, needs to think again. The city is blessed with a talented, professional, and proactive police department with extremely high standards. These unsung heroes don’t always get the credit for maintaining that feeling of security for which they are largely responsible. Our public deserves and demands a high level of performance from our officers. Often it is hard for citizens to love the guy (or gal) who writes them a speeding ticket. If you knew that the stop may have prevented you from hitting a child though, that ticket may seem like a gift. When out taking a midnight stroll and an officer stops you to inquire about your status, you may want thank him/her for keeping the streets safe.
Covington officers have arrested and helped convict murderers, rapists, thieves and others who threaten the safety of law-abiding citizens. We have designated an officer strictly to handle community policing. We have helped revitalize several Neighborhood Watch groups, and we attend Covington Business Association meetings. Our officers are heavily involved in the community. They deserve great respect.. Why would anyone want a job that requires a bulletproof vest? It’s not for the money. (Starting salary is less than $27,000.) I’ve been told: to help people, love of the law, to keep criminals off the street, to make a difference in the community, and the pursuit of justice. Whatever the reason, I’m grateful they do it. They are worth their weight in gold.

Beautification Projects in the Works
30
WRITTEN BY DONALD VILLERE, MAYOR OF MANDEVILLE
THERE ARE SEVERAL beautification projects going on in our city right now. Our Public Works Department has been busy planting additional crepe myrtles along the East and West Causeway Approaches. The crepe myrtles were generously donated by the Greater New Orleans Expressway Commission (GNOEC). The City is planning to install new arbor swings on the lakefront that will match the arbors at the entry points to the harbor playground. The existing benches will also be replaced to match the original park benches. The Northshore Community Foundation, working with the City of Mandeville chose Duany Plater-Zyberk (DPZ), a leading urban planning firm, to create a blueprint for developing the civic center of Old Mandeville.
DPZ was chosen to work with Mandeville residents and civic leaders to deliver the Town Center Resiliency Plan, which will guide the creation of a vibrant mix of housing, businesses and public spaces at an already popular gathering place. Beginning March 18th, the complete Market Study and Public Facilities Feasibility study will be delivered. The remainder of the plan will be assembled throughout April and May, and by June 15th, the final code will be submitted. It is hoped that the plan will result in charming and enduring structures at the Town Center that are resilient physically and economically; providing new jobs, new homes, and thriving new businesses and shops for the community.

Mother Nature in the Winter Garden WRITTEN BY ANNA RIBBECK
HAVE YOU NOTICED the surprises Mother Nature has provided us with this year? Many visitors to our area have returned home to tell of the place they just visited that all in one day has changed from spring in the morning, to summer midday, to winter at night. What a treat! They will remember that when visiting the Greater New Orleans/ Northshore area in the winter, they should dress for all seasons. Trees are dormant now. Only citrus still bear fruit and birds readily devour the berries. Do remember that our feathered friends will thrill you with sight and sound if you supply them with suet, birdseed and water. Cardinals, pine siskins, juncos, finches, red winged blackbirds, cedar wax wings and more, are all prevalent in our area—many in flocks. The cedar wax wings have been known to completely clean a pittosporum of berries, become drunk, and fall to the ground. It is good to be aware of this humorous but potentially dangerous activity, especially if there are dogs or cats that share the garden. Also in full swing in the greenhouse and among the potted plants are pesky white flies, mealy bugs, mites and scales. Keep your plants healthy, clean and in a spot of high humidity with good light to help ward off these pests. Keep plants’ leaves
clean and remove all dead wood and debris from their surroundings. If shrubs become infested with bugs or scale, now is the time to apply a good oil spray that will rid them of that problem. Gather seed pods that may be left on bushes and label them for spring planting. When planting seeds and cuttings, it is best to use good soil and mulch, preferably in peat pots so that roots are not disturbed when transferring them into the garden in the spring. Have fun trying some different varieties of new plants like red salvia, summer jewel and glamour red ornamental kale. Or, try viola shangri-la marina, which usually stays full and beautiful until May or June. The latest variety of apricot, Arizona gaillardia is another hardy, colorful specimen to use next to a border of violas. Remember to water and inspect your Christmas plants and be certain to remove all decorations so the plant does not sit in water. Poinsettias will grow outdoors over the summer and can become spectacular plants for the holidays when placed in partially shaded (cool) spots in the garden and not drowned. Keep rye grass cut so that it will remain a beautiful green all winter. May the joy of the winter sun delight your heart and light your garden with happiness.
