FOR MANY FOLKS who are dating or in a relationship, Valentine’s Day becomes a day of reckoning. What you do, or don’t do, will certainly be remembered. (Just ask my friend whose husband gave her—no lie—a scale. Believe it or not, he did live to see another day. Just barely.) My husband and I usually opt for a simple card and eating out at an area restaurant (sans kids) earlier in the week to avoid the crowds. However you choose to spend the day, remember it’s a chance to make your feelings known to that special someone you are dating, or if you are already involved in a relationship, an opportunity to make your good relationship even better or improve upon a “rocky” one. Listen and pay attention. As my first grade teacher said, “We all have two ears and one mouth. It’s important to use them in that order.” Listen to your significant other. Whether s/he is talking about the work day or her/his dreams, show that you’re interested. Go out of your way. Make the extra effort to do what your significant other likes. If your guy loves golf and you notice his golf club grips are worn out, make the effort and get them repaired. Come to her/his rescue. Is he technologically challenged? Set up his new iPod or computer for him. Maybe then, he will make your life simpler and watch the kids for a few hours while you get your toes done. Still need help deciding what to get for your sweetheart this year? We have pulled together a special guide with gift ideas available on the Northshore. See page 10. Happy Valentine’s Day.

TODAY, 70% of the U.S. population is missing at least one tooth. The first dental implant was placed over 30 years ago, with a reported success rate of better than 97% for 10 years. Today’s implants are predominantly made of titanium, replacing stainless steel since bone can grow over the titanium. Most dental surgery to place the implant can be done with a local anesthetic in less than one hour with little to no postoperative problems. The implant is left to integrate and is uncovered and ready for the crown in three to four months.

A dental implant has a higher success rate Understand that without the implant, the bone in the extracted site will continue to loose bone even with a bridge! Although the bridge seems like the easier solution, there are long-term benefits that need to be considered before “bridging the gap”! Because every dentist has unique insight and experience, you will get very different opinions about this topic. Like anything else, the more informed you are the more confident you will feel in your decision.

Are Today’s Seniors a Generation at Risk?
VERY CANDIDLY, today’s seniors could be a generation at risk. Why? Well, it’s very obvious that seniors and their families have pressing needs for reliable information about nearly every aspect of senior care. And, in particular, they face serious challenges in three pertinent areas: • They don’t know about the care options or the cost of that care • They don’t know who pays for what • They don’t think planning for seniorSHOPPING care THREE RIVERS CENTER is a priority So, to limit the risk this generation faces, we need to correct these misconceptions. I have found the book Stages of Senior Care by Lori and Paul Hogan does just that. Stages1600 N. Hwy. 190 Covington outlines in a logical, step-by-step fashion the spectrum of senior care, and it helps readers see the wonderful proliferation of options that has evolved over the past 15 years. Who pays for senior care? Most seniors and adult children think Social Security, Medicare or their parents’ retirement accounts will slihg;oawhgkawlnf.aks,nv cover the cost of care. But that is not always kae true. The authors of Stages, who have been in the senior care business since 1994, have found that seniors and their adult children: • Don’t understand senior care options • Don’t have a realistic grasp of the costs • Make dangerously wrong assumptions Are You Ready for the Season? that government programs will pay for their care • Haven’t planned for senior care That’s why the authors decided to write this substantial book. The book addresses these basic but very critical issues by serving as a practical, easyto-use guide for families making senior care decisions. Stages is now in bookstores across the U.S. It is filled with much-needed information on senior care issues.

The Northshore’s Best
Only the best for your tru love… Music is Hope WRITTEN BY DR. MARY W. SPEED
WHEN I WAS LITTLE, I loved musicals. I guess from my early recollections of Doris Day, that little guy singing in the rain, folks in Oklahoma getting clobbered by an oil gusher, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, The Bells of St. Mary’s, plus many other movies, I believed that, when I grew up, I would see people spontaneously break out in song and Account Executive ________________________________________ maybe dance, or better yet, both sing and dance. I actually expected to hear music and see couples dancing. I looked in random places where it might happen, like grocery stores, work places, bleachers, classrooms, etc., wherever people were.

HAPPY 2010! Does your New Year’s resolution involve renewed interest in your appearance? Are you considering a cosmetic procedure in addition to diet and exercise? If so, what factors should be considered as you navigate the maze of providers and their websites? The obvious first step is to check credentials and experience. A physician who is board certified in dermatology, plastic surgery or ENT plastic surgery has completed years of formal training and testing in cosmetic procedures and is recognized by the profession as an expert. The term “fellow” denotes further expertise and experience. Although a variety of providers have chosen to begin performing cosmetic surgery in recent years, most other specialty programs do not include training in cosmetic procedures. Experience does matter. A physician who has been successfully performing a particular procedure over many years has a high level of practical knowledge and technical proficiency, is able to realistically explain procedure expectations and is equipped to address any complications which may arise. It is essential to choose a physician who understands the broad spectrum of patient responses to surgical and chemical remodeling. Your vetting process may also include wordof-mouth recommendations followed by a face-to-face consultation with the physician. Be specific about the issues you would like to address, but also be open-minded to additional needs the doctor may suggest. It is always a good idea to write down any questions you may have and take them with you to your appointment. Make sure you understand not only details about the procedure but also pre and post requirements. Seek a reputable physician who listens attentively, addresses your specific concerns and gives a realistic appraisal of expected results.

Belinda Janecke, Pinnacle Mortgage Group, LLC Worth the Risks WRITTEN BY FRANCIE UNGER
Sophisticated Woman | February 2010
DEDICATED, LOYAL, DETERMINED, independent, passionate, trustworthy, committed and enthusiastic are just some of the adjectives used by friends, family and business associates to describe Belinda Janecke. As the managing partner in Pinnacle Mortgage Group, LLC, a company she built from the ground up in only three years, Belinda is all this and more. As a child, Belinda had planned to be the first woman Chief Justice of the Supreme Court—that is until Sandra Day O’Connor came along. Belinda is just that type. She sets a goal and does whatever necessary to achieve that goal, always making sure that what she does is done with honesty and integrity. “Always treat people as you wish to be treated,” Belinda said. “It is the way I try to live my life and what I live by in my business. It was something instilled in me by my parents as a child, and something I strongly believe.” Belinda grew up in the small town of Dyer, Tennessee. It was a good upbringing—a place where she learned the importance of morality, family, Christian values and what it is to have and be a good friend. These are lessons as important today, as they were as a child. They are also one of the things that attracted her husband Eric to her more than 15 years ago. After graduating from the University of Tennessee, Belinda worked for the Nashville Convention and Visitors Bureau and then in the Convention industry in Washington, D.C. It was while traveling from a trade show in a shuttle bus, that fate intervened, and Eric met Belinda. “I was attracted to her beauty, no doubt,” Eric said. “What I really found, was that we were a lot alike, and she had everything I was looking for—good ethics, morals and a real commitment to God and family.” Belinda and Eric married and settled in Washington. Three years later, they welcomed their pride and joy, Rebecca. Not long after, Eric was offered a job with the Hilton in New Orleans, which brought the Janecke family to their new home on the Northshore. That was 12 years ago when Rebecca was only 13 months old. Belinda and Eric soon found a home with the help of real estate agent Ann O’Bryan, who became a trusted family friend. It was Ann who suggested that Belinda look into the mortgage business. That was October, 1998, and today, 11 years later, Belinda is at the top of her game. Pinnacle Mortgage Group, LLC, which started in a single office just three years ago, is now celebrating its success in a brand new office building

than eight years, as a wholesale representative. Since December, he and Belinda have formed a partnership and purchased their wonderful new building with Belinda retaining responsibility for the day-to-day operations. When Belinda was asked to describe herself in just three words, they were confident, determined, and most of all, happy. Pinnacle Mortgage Group, LLC, is located at 4030 Lonesome Road in Mandeville. currently staffing five employees. “My whole life is tied to this business,” Belinda said. “When someone comes to me for mortgage help, it is important for me to take care of them. I watch the rates, search for the best products for their situation and I make sure they are getting sound financial advice. It is what I would want my mortgage broker to do for me, so it is what I do for them.” “Belinda has such incredible enthusiasm and passion for what she does,” Ann O’Bryan said. “She knows the mortgage business and sincerely takes every client and their needs to heart. I know that when I refer a client to Belinda, I don’t have to worry.” In the current economic climate, many are confused whether this might be a good time to buy or refinance a home. Belinda’s advice: now is the perfect time to buy or refinance for many reasons. One, rates are still very good and are poised to move higher. Two, the first-time homebuyer $8,000 tax credit has been extended to April 30, 2010. That means if you have a contract by April 30 and close by June 30, you are eligible for the tax credit. There is even a $6,500 tax credit for repeat buyers, buyers who have lived in their home three of the last five years. Belinda knows that the loan industry can be very confusing. Every lender has its own guidelines and specific ways of doing things. When deciding to buy or refinance, it is important to find someone you can trust to be honest with you—someone that will tell you the real truth about whether you will or won’t get a loan based on the information provided. If it looks like the loan won’t be approved, you want someone willing to work with you and provide specific ways you can fix the glitches so that the next time you apply the answer will be “approved.” Though Belinda lives and breathes the mortgage business, on those opportunities when she and her family can get away to one of their favorite vacation destinations, like skiing in Beaver Creek, Colorado, or surfing the waves of Maui, she can leave knowing the business is in good hands. Carl Benefield joined Pinnacle Mortgage in March 2009, but had worked with Pinnacle Mortgage for more

Dining on the Northshore THE NORTHSHORE DINING scene has exploded in recent years, and truly offers something for everyone—from local favorites, such as po-boys, red beans & rice and gumbo to sizzling steaks, gourmet Italian and classic French cuisine. Many famous New Orleans eateries opened restaurants here after Katrina, so we don’t even have to cross the bridge anymore to satisfy our cravings for the foods we grew up with. We’re also home to local breweries who offer a variety of their brand favorites as well as seasonal beers that capture the local spirit and flavors. And, let’s not forget the growth of offerings of home made foods and home grown ingredients to be found at the Farmers Markets in Covington and Mandeville. For a listing of Northshore restaurants, visit the St. Tammany Tourist Commission’s website at www.LouisianaNorthshore.com and click on Dining. Bon Apetit!

This Valentine’s, Fall in Love with N’Tini’s New Orleans Steak & Martinis Benfatti family supports her and believes that her talents and open heart have already earned their votes. (Readers can still vote for their favorite cover girl online, www.sophisticatedwomanmagazine.com.) N’Tini’s will also be your local caucus for the Mandeville Mayor’s race with their “Olive Mandeville” campaign (a play on words “I Love” Mandeville). Customers will cast their vote in olives placed in the respective candidate’s jar. Olive voting will begin with the race so make sure to cast yours with a twist! With all of the fun events going on at N’Tini’s the best part is still the food. The menu is a collection of foods that are savory to the fullest. Whatever your preferences, there is something for everyone including steaks and fresh seafood. N’Tini’s brings uniqueness not only to their original dinner specials but also to old favorites like the award winning N’Tini’s burger, mouth watering steaks, Maine lobster, succulent ribs and market fresh seafood, all cooked to perfection. For dessert lovers, their perfect bread pudding will warm your heart and crème brûlée will sweeten your smile. But the piece-de-resistance is the fresh daily cheesecake, particularly the pecan praline. To top it off, N’Tini’s serves up the best martini in town with an extensive specialty martini list including the famous First Kiss, Contra Flow and Lemon Drop. N’Tini’s is open Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. until 9 p.m., Friday from 11 a.m. until 10 p.m. and Saturday Dinner from 5 p.m. until 10 p.m. Reservations are recommended by calling 985-626-5566. N’Tini’s is located at 2891 Highway 190 in the Village Shopping Center across from the post office in Mandeville.
“It is all about providing friendly hospitality and exceptional service.”
Sophisticated Woman | February 2010
IT ISN’T ALWAYS TRUE that an “ill wind blows no good.” Such is the case of N’Tini’s restaurant in Mandeville when owners Mark and Donna Benfatti blew to the Northshore following hurricane Katrina. Their southshore success as restaurateurs came with them as N’Tini’s has topped the ranks of many fine dining spots. According to the Benfattis, “It is all about providing friendly hospitality and exceptional service.” Reminiscent of traditional New Orleans ambiance, N’Tini’s has its patrons raving. In 2008 and 2009, the restaurant won numerous Northshore’s Best awards, including best overall restaurant and best atmosphere. With fine food and polished service it is no wonder that N’Tini’s is the first to offer a service guarantee to its customers. N’Tini’s has become known as the best place to celebrate birthdays and anniversaries, and Valentine’s is no exception. However, this year Valentine’s Day falls on Bacchus Sunday so they will offer sweetheart specials February 8–11. Mark Benfatti has been in the dog house before and wanted to help his customers by encouraging them to plan ahead! N’Tini’s is hosting a contest to win the Ultimate Valentine’s Evening based on customer’s best experience. Until February 8, diners can fill out a comment card describing their most well rounded or animated dining experience. Competition is tough as customers elaborate on their memorable martini nights or extravagant anniversaries to compete for the top spot. The grand prize includes a chauffeured limousine, diamond pendant, chefs table, one dozen roses and flowing champagne. Featured on the cover of Sophisticated Woman in February 2009, Donna Benfatti is in the race for 2009 Enterprising Woman of the Year. The

Food for Lovers of Food WRITTEN BY PAUL CIMINO
Ever since the inception of St. Valentine’s Day centuries ago, love has been expressed on that day in many ways… the sending of cards, flowers, candies, jewels, and a myriad of other ways. And although these methods of expression are ever popular, it seems that romantic dinners by candlelight and flowers are a much enjoyed adjunct. Many a formal engagement of sweethearts or proposals of marriage transpire on St. Valentine’s day, and the most popular place for this seems to be over a romantic and special dinner. But it doesn’t necessarily mean that all demonstrations of affections on that special day for lovers need take place in fancy restaurants. Successful unions have often begun with a simple and delectable home-cooked meal. You may want to try the following recipes to add to your gourmet repertoire. See for yourself if the old adage—“the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach”—is true. See if Cupid is on the ball.

THE HEART: a symbol known throughout the western world as signifying love or affection. But have you ever wondered where it came from? Upon viewing photos of the human heart, the only part that even vaguely resembles it is the pointed bottom. Evidence of its use can be seen as far back as the Middle Ages. On an ancient Greek amphora (jar), hearts represented leaves on Dionysus’ wreath; however, the association with Eros, god of sexual love, and Cupid, his Roman counterpart, has prevailed today. The Catholic Church has stated that the Sacred Heart, a heart surrounded by a crown of thorns, came as a vision to St. Margaret Marie Alacoque in the late 17th century. There is some evidence that it was in use centuries earlier, as it is incorporated in stained glass windows and cloister decorations. Christians believe it is a representation of Jesus’ soul. The Egyptian myth is that the ab or “heart soul” bears a remarkable resemblance to the depictions in the Christian stained glass. The tale of the ab is that it’s one of the Egyptian’s seven souls that came directly from the mother’s heart, in the form of holy lunar
Proof #1 blood and would descend to the womb and take the shape of her child. The most fascinating explanation for the shape is found in ancient Africa. In the seventh century BC, in the city-state of Cyrene, there was a valuable plant called Silphium, a species of fennel. It made Cyrene one of the wealthiest cities in Africa, and was so valuable it was harvested to extinction. Why was it so valuable? Silphium was found to have properties preventing conception! The large seedpod of this plant was shaped as the heart as we know it today. The heart symbol we know in the present day became fashionable in the Victorian era. This is when it started appearing to the general public as embroidery, decoration for literature and jewelry. The heart is still a popular icon today in the arts. Ceramicists, painters and jewelry makers all make use of the ancient symbol. One of the most interesting local depictions is that of Katie Northey Gruntz from Mandeville. Katie carves the form for her sterling heart pendants out of charcoal, and then casts it in sterling silver. Hanging it on a hand-forged chain, she gives the ancient symbol of love a decidedly modern look.

We hear the nicknames every day—Goofy, Bucky, Bugs Bunny and Fang, to name just a few. Sounds like loads of fun. This can create real psychosocial pain for a child, pain that can last a lifetime. One study on childhood harassment found that misaligned or protruding teeth are the single most common target of name-calling among children. Furthermore, children with orthodontic problems are more subject to bullying than their luckier peers. We have all experienced the hostility of childhood epithets—it’s part of growing up. Beat That Sinus Infection! EACH YEAR, 37 million Americans suffer from sinusitis (or sinus infections), resulting in 12 million doctor visits and $5.8 billion dollars spent on healthcare costs. Sinusitis is due to inflammation of one or more sinuses, which are hollow cavities within the bones of the face. Mucus membranes lining these produce fluid, drain into the nasal passages and is swallowed. When these sites are blocked, infection develops. Sinusitis can be acute, chronic or recurrent. Most cases of acute sinusitis start with the common cold, viral in origin, and proceeds to a bacterial infection. 39% of sinusitis begins as allergies, often in patients with allergic rhinitis and asthma. Constant exposure to inhaled allergens present year round such as dust, pets, molds and roaches cause inflammation of the sinuses. What exactly is a Cataract?
THE INDIVIDUAL COMPONENTS of the eye work in a manner similar to a camera. Each part plays a vital role in providing clear vision. So think of the eye as a camera with the cornea, behaving much like a lens cover. As the eye’s main focusing element, the cornea takes widely diverging rays of light and bends them through the pupil, the dark, round opening in the center of the colored iris. People may also experience cataracts after an injury to the eye, as a result of ocular disease, after the use of certain medications or as a result of medical conditions such as diabetes. Common symptoms people may notice when they have a cataract are cloudy, fuzzy, foggy or filmy vision. Some complain of glare from lamps or the sun, which may be severe. Others will notice difficulty driving at night due to glare from headlights, or double vision. Cataracts are usually treated with surgery if vision problems are interfering with the person’s quality of life. It involves removing the natural lens of the eye, which contains the cataract. The lens is then usually replaced with an artificial lens called an intraocular lens implant. Today there are lens implants that not only improve the loss of clarity from the cataract itself but also can correct for astigmatism. So, what can you do to ensure a better night’s sleep? The fact is, you can do a lot! Start by exercising on a regular basis. If possible, try exercising in the morning, and if that’s not feasible, make sure you exercise a few hours before you go to bed because an increased heart rate can interfere with your sleep. Also, limit the caffeine and increase your water intake. Eat an early dinner to allow enough time for your food to digest before you go to sleep. Get a routine. If you go to bed at the same time every night and get up at the same time every morning, your body will learn when it is time to rest. Lastly, create a comfortable place to sleep by choosing the correct mattress and pillow. Your mattress should support your body’s weight evenly and allow your spine to stay in its natural alignment. Every person is different, so choose what is comfortable to you. After investing in a quality mattress, make sure you invest in a supportive pillow. A good pillow will keep the neck properly aligned with the chest and lower back. If you are still experiencing sleep problems, talk to your doctor and keep a sleep journal for a few weeks. Sweet Dreams!

Is Covington Still a Well-Kept Secret?
WRITTEN BY CANDACE WATKINS, MAYOR OF COVINGTON
community
І slidell
AFTER SPENDING NEARLY 11 years promoting the city, I still hear reports of people saying, “I didn’t know this was here,” after a visit to downtown Covington. It’s a conundrum. Maybe I should go door to door spreading the good news. It’s a piece of Americana that every resident of St. Tammany should experience. It’s a place like no other, and we want to share it. Driving down Rutland Street last week after dark, I gazed through the window of Ray’s Barber Shop. Hollywood could not duplicate the interior of this quaint spot. It’s the authenticity of our Historic District that sets it apart from any other CBD in the area. Covington, founded in 1813, has been the center of government and commerce since it became the Parish seat in 1829, and its history has resulted in a district that blends the best of the past with the cutting edge of the present. Interwoven into the fabric of this unique district are many contemporary businesses, and the architecture clearly reflects the compatibility of the present uses with the past. Shops, award-winning restaurants, galleries, exercise studios, art schools, spas, a hardware museum and much more are interspersed
among the Justice Center, City Hall, the St. Tammany Emergency Operations Center, the Covington Trailhead and many high tech professional firms. It’s an eclectic blend to beat all eclectic blends and something you just need to experience for yourself. When you travel down Highway 190, take the right fork to Highway 21 just before the Bogue Falaya Bridge. Then a quick left turn at Highway 21 will put you on Boston Street and into downtown Covington. Each Saturday you will find the Farmers Market (worth the trip all by itself) on the side lawn of old City Hall at 601 N. Columbia St. from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. (You’ll want to get there early though to get the best selection.) The Market moves to the Trailhead at the corner of New Hampshire and Lockwood on Wednesday afternoons. The list of the City’s special events is much to long to include here, so go to www.cityofcovingtonla.com for the scoop. The city plans to unveil its new Trailhead Museum exhibit, including a film on the history of Covington, in the first quarter of this year. Stay tuned for more information. And PLEASE treat yourself to a trip to Covington.
Slidell Improves its Building Code Effectiveness Grading
WRITTEN BY BEN MORRIS, MAYOR OF SLIDELL
code enforcement; Grade 10 indicates no recognizable enforcement. Many insurance companies will use these BCEGS grades, among other determinants, in their formulas to calculate their rates. Better grades could mean better rates in the future. I am happy to report that the City of Slidell has received a Grade 3 on the Building Code Effectiveness Grading Schedule for one (1) and two (2) family residential property within the city’s corporate limits, effective on or after January 1, 2009. This is an improvement from the city’s BCEGS Grade 4 during 2008 and Grade 5 classification in years previous to that. For commercial and industrial property, the City of Slidell has received a Grade 4, also effective on or after January 1, 2009. An improvement from the city’s BCEGS Grade 5 during 2008. I am proud that our community is leading the way with not only more stringent building codes, but with our equally strong enforcement of our codes. I commend our employees for their dedication and we will continue to make improvements where we can.
Sophisticated Woman | February 2010
NOT ALL COMMUNITIES have equally stringent building codes, nor do all communities enforce their codes with equal vigor. Yet the effectiveness of local building codes can help predict how well a structure will fare in a hurricane, earthquake, or other natural disaster. After Hurricane Katrina, photos taken in Louisiana showed completely destroyed homes in the same area as homes with only moderate damage. Homes with superior construction experienced far less damage. Building Code Effectiveness Classifications help to distinguish between communities with effective building code enforcement and those with weak enforcement. The concept is simple: municipalities with effective, well-enforced codes demonstrate better loss experience when catastrophe strikes. Buildings located in such communities — constructed according to current codes — likewise experience less severe loss. Each year in Louisiana, municipalities are assigned a grade from 1 to 10 by the Property Insurance Association of Louisiana (PIAL) using its Building Code Effectiveness Grading Schedule (BCEGS). Grade 1 represents exemplary commitment to building-

Rick Richard – Mandeville’s New Chief of Police
WRITTEN BY EDWARD P. LYONS, MAYOR OF MANDEVILLE
AFTER REVIEWING 42 possible candidates and narrowing the interviews to 17, I determined that Rick Richard was the best fit for Mandeville. Although he has lived in seven other states and hails from Baton Rouge, Rick has been a resident of Mandeville for the past 19 years. His retirement as a Special Agent for the FBI dovetailed perfectly with the availability we requested. His credentials are impeccable. He has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from LSU and received his Masters of Science in Management from Troy State. He is also a graduate of the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia, the Louisiana State Police Academy in Baton Rouge and the United States Air Force Security Police Academy at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. He reached the rank of Captain in the Air Force after two years of service finishing as Chief of Security Police in New York for the Air Force’s top research lab. He was awarded the Defense Meritorious Service Medal. He returned to Baton Rouge and was assigned with the Louisiana State Police to Executive Protection Detail at the Governor’s mansion and was also a narcotics agent. He then served in the FBI. In Kentucky, he was
the principal investigator in public corruption and interstate theft; in California he studied the Arabic language; in Washington D.C. he served as investigator and later on a classified International Terrorism/ foreign Counter Intelligence squad and managed 20 agents. He toured Afghanistan with Special Forces and managed and directed all overt and covert technical assets and equipment deployed to assist criminal and intelligence cases. In New Orleans, he was assigned as a special agent, primary investigator and program coordinator of Organized Crime investigations from 1991 to 1997. Before retiring, he was the Division Technical Advisor/Program Director, recruiting and directly managing six special agents. He has been awarded a host of other medals and certificates of additional training. He met every requirement we sought and more. I believe he will do an outstanding job, and the City of Mandeville will be proud to have him lead the charge. He was approved by our City Council and will begin on Tuesday, January 19. It is my privilege and honor as Mayor to appoint Percy “Rick” Richard as Chief of the Mandeville Police Department.

Communication and Commitment
WRITTEN BY LACEY TOLEDANO, WEST ST. TAMMANY CHAMBER
Sophisticated Woman | February 2010
OF COMMERCE PRESIDENT
34
I OFTEN JOKE THAT committee is not a four letter word. If you are familiar with language studies and root words, however, you realize that the first four letters of the word are the same as those in two other words: communication and commitment. It’s February now. Are you still committed to your New Year’s resolutions? Communication is also something that is not simple in today’s world. How do you manage all the communication you have to initiate, and all the communication you receive? We all have conversations, phone messages, emails, Facebook messages, newspapers, e-newsletters, professional and social publications. All are important and useful forms of communication. Most of us will still find time to make some new commitments and carry through on existing ones.
There are many ways to get involved in St. Tammany, and even in our Chamber. Since the New Year is young, I would like to use this communication opportunity on behalf of our committee chairmen, board of directors and members who benefit from their collective work, to encourage you to get involved on a Chamber committee in 2010. Visit our website and see our organization chart where membership is at the top and communications is prominently placed in the center. The committee descriptions describe our plan of work for 2010. Call any staff member for more information. Commit to keep up with Chamber communications. Get involved. Chamber members who are active, attend networking events or serve on a committee, ultimately get the most from their membership benefits.

Storm Protection for St. Tammany
WRITTEN BY KEVIN DAVIS, ST. TAMMANY PARISH PRESIDENT
LAST MONTH I travelled to Washington D.C. with other parish officials, elected officials and members of the business community. We discussed transportation projects and community development. Our main purpose was to present a unified front to our Senators and Congressmen in regards to storm protection for St. Tammany Parish. We had meetings with our Congressmen and Senators. We reiterated the 14 billion dollar difference in funding spent for southshore versus northshore levee and storm protection. We again expressed the need for some form of levee storm protection for the Northshore. St. Tammany has experienced nearly a
25% increase in population over the last five years. We explained the need for improved infrastructure throughout the parish, but especially in those areas most affected by our growth. I was very encouraged by these meetings. If St. Tammany Parish is to meet the future safely, we must have adequate storm protection. We must have sufficient infrastructure in place to support our current growth and that which will occur in the future. Our Louisiana legislative team is aware of our needs and will act accordingly. The goal is to continue to build excellence in every aspect of life here in St. Tammany Parish.
We must have sufficient infrastructure in place to support our current growth and that which will occur in the future.
