IS ANYONE ELSE WONDERING where the Signature _____________________________________ year 2010 has gone? It seems like just yesterday I was making resolutions for the New Date ________________________________________ Year, and here we are at the start of yet another one. Though cliché, it is true that as you get older, time flies by. The lesson for me is to slow down a little and drink it in a little slower. Every day my kids get taller, smarter and more independent. There is no doubt that soon they will have something better to do than spend time with Mom and Dad. So while they still think it’s the coolest to have “family movie night,” we should probably pencil in a few more of those. When you are an adult, doesn’t it seem like your parents wisdom will always be just a phone call away? It won’t always. We should pick up the phone. Another lesson is to show more appreciation for people and the simple things we take for granted. Maybe keep in better touch with folks who are cherished friends. What are the odds that any of these will stick? Keep your fingers crossed. Colors represented on this proof are an approximation of actual printed material. Our Enterprising Woman this month can certainly jump-start that goal. She is an authority on positive change. Sometimes a little whimsy in your wardrobe gives you just the right boost. Our Fashion Editor has chosen some beautiful baubles to complement every look. And it is that time again to select Sophisticated Woman’s Enterprising Woman of the Year. We are anxious to get your vote. The winner will be announced at our annual Hats Off Luncheon this Spring. We look forward to the slow, succulent enjoyment of this New Year—2011, and we COVINGTON 69305 HWY 21 | 985-893-6556 look forward to savoring it with you.

Choose the Right Bra for the Right Activity THANKFULLY, HOLIDAY party food is behind us. Speaking of behinds—has yours—like mine, taken on a life of its own? I’m going to have to step up my exercise routine and you can bet I’ll protect my “assets” and wear a good sport bra to minimize painful bouncing while I get back into shape! Many women wear every day bras during workouts, but a regular bra is just not designed to give your breasts the support they require during strenuous activities. Sport bras come in three levels of support: low, medium and high. Low impact sport bras are fine for leisure, sleeping or yoga. However, bouncing activities like walking, elliptical, tennis, biking and running require a higher level of support. Try on styles that are bra-sized for the most exact fit. Small, medium and large don’t fit as well as proper band and cup sized sport bras. I recommend sport bras that not only compress but also encapsulate the breasts. Compression holds the breasts closer and more securely to your body. Encapsulation sport bras have individual cups that hold each breast in place separately. They also keep you cooler and the look is more bralike without the uni-boob. Many modern sport bras combine the two different types of support with an underwire for good looks and support. Another feature to look for in a sport bra is a Cool-Max type of fabric. To prevent chaffing and skin irritation, a good sport bra should be made of moisture-wicking fabric that transports perspiration away from your body keeping you not only high, but also dry. I recommended using a professional fitter to help you choose the style and size that’s right for you and your level of activity.

Simple to prepare and simply delicious, this is a dish you’ll want to add to your list of favorites.

WELL—IT’S THAT TIME OF YEAR again. The winter months are upon us. Unfortunately, it is also the time of year when people’s immune systems are weakened, leaving us susceptible to illnesses. Proper supplementation during this time can help prevent colds and flus. Implementing supplements into your nutrition such as Vitamin D, Vitamin C and Echinacea can boost your immune system and ward off illnesses. Vitamin D is a secret weapon for all immune systems during the winter. It is directly responsible for activating the body’s T cells. These cells are the body’s first line of defense when fighting off infections. The best source of this vitamin comes from the sun. However, during the winter months, there is not enough direct sunlight to activate vitamin D production in the body, and it becomes increasingly more important to supplement with vitamin D during this time. Vitamin C is an oldie but a goody. This water soluble vitamin is found in many citrus fruits. The antioxidant properties of this vitamin have been shown to strengthen the immune system. It helps protect the body from harmful free radicals. It also fights mental and physical stress, and contributes to overall health and energy. Echinacea is a purple flower that belongs to the sunflower family. For centuries it has been used to strengthen the immune system. Echinacea has the ability to activate certain white blood cells that are a part of the immune system. When activated, these white blood cells will seek out harmful bacteria and viruses and destroy them. This winter, try adding vitamin D, vitamin C and Echinacea into your diet and supplementation regimen.

A Positive New Perspective— A Positive New You Valerie Poole—Certified Lifestyle Consultant

Sophisticated Woman | January 2011

WRITTEN BY AMY BOUTON PHOTOGRAPHY BY STEVE RANDON

18

MANDEVILLE LIFESTYLE CONSULTANT (life coach) Valerie Poole is a self-professed spa junkie. She traveled the world in a quest to locate the preeminent spa experience. Along the way, she stumbled into the realm of holistic spas where acupuncture, detoxification, colonics, fasting and meditation are common practice. Once on a jaunt to Palm Springs for holistic cleansing, she had the unexpected pleasure of fasting with Matthew McConaughey. While on her “spa quest,” through fasting and energy work and the various therapies she tried, Valerie realized, for the first time, a state of inner peace and selfacceptance. “I dare say that I felt enlightened, or surely the closest I’ve ever been to enlightenment,” she says. “It was addictive. I realized that the peace and serenity I experienced takes work, because it wears off as life catches up with you. You’re stressed out, errands to run, kids to care for, deadlines to meet—you have to come back to reality. But having this experience changed my life forever.” Having that experience was the passageway that led her into her current field as a lifestyle consultant. “Personally, I work every day for that peaceful inner feeling. I am no Hollywood Buddhist convert! I strive to be a better person and to keep negative energy out of my life.” With the start of the new year, many people will resolve to do the same. People come to Valerie to help them achieve that inner calm. Men and women, moms and dads, empty nesters, workaholics… she strives as a life coach, certified through the International Coaching Federation specializing in women’s empowerment, to give them a new perspective so that they can make positive changes. “I’ve found that between houses and spouses and career and kids, many women lose sight of who they really are and what they really want,” Valerie says. “I help them find their true selves again.” As the oldest of four children, Valerie saw

You can tell by the way she pokes fun at herself for truly being a fur wearing tree hugger. Common sense is the foundation she uses to help individuals find more fulfillment and balance in their lives. “Know that you cannot do everything. We all need to set boundaries. I help people learn to do that.” The principles of Eastern spiritual wisdom and metaphysics come into play as well. “I teach clients how to get things they want out of life by attuning to the laws of the universe to achieve their goals.” Specifically, the Law of Attraction, which simply stated, says that we attract to ourselves whatever we allow to dominate our thoughts, whether positive or negative. Each client is taught how to create and utilize their own personal vision statement. “This is simply a one-page positive reinforcement of your goal. Every day, you take five minutes to read over the foundation of where you want to be.” Valerie’s practice is based in Basic Elements Day Spa in Mandeville, which she found after a year-long search. “I wanted to settle somewhere with a synergy compatible to my own. I felt the atmosphere of acceptance the moment I walked through the door.” In addition there was a balanced mix of both—in her words—“phenomenal staff” offering customary spa services as well as unconventional offerings like Reiki, healing touch massage, chakra cleansing and rain drop therapy. “I’m just a normal person who is in pursuit of that peaceful, happy feeling that many people have never found. To guide us toward that end, we have to learn to focus on our inner selves as much as we do our physical selves. Where should you start? Start with yourself.” Valerie can be contacted for an appointment at 985-630-7800.

her own mom struggle with many of the same stressors she sees modern women face today. She saw her mother lost at times, caught up in the daily grind of life. She credits her mother, though, with giving her an immeasurable gift. “My mother really instilled in me to be myself—to be happy. I never felt pressure to win at all costs. She accepted me for who I was and nurtured my spirit.” Now, she hopes she can instill in her own child that same sense of security in who he is and where his dreams take him. Before you can benefit from the services of a lifestyle consultant, you must honestly assess the six major areas in your life, which include, relationships, spirituality, professional, emotional, financial and physical wellness. This honest assessment is where the work begins. “I help you identify obstacles in your life (both internal and external) that may be preventing you from achieving what you want,” she says. “My role is to help you reset that internal versus external programming. I want you to celebrate and own your own unique, ideas, thoughts and dreams. I will guide you into successful living, which I believe is made up of powerful habits, including better ways of thinking and concrete ways of taking action.” Valerie underscores the importance of complete honesty, adding that all sessions are confidential and non-judgmental. She stresses to her clients that reserving judgment of others contributes greatly to their own emotional well-being. “When we finish our sessions, I want my clients to be able to reduce their stress through better choices, overcome their self-limiting attitudes and behaviors, clarify their goals one by one, learn to be non-judgmental and remove negativity from their lives, and finally, I want them to be at ease with

Why is My Eye Twitching? EYE LID TWITCHING is one of the most common conditions that patients complain about. Myokymia, or eye twitch, is an involuntary eyelid muscle contraction. Usually only the bottom lid of one eye is involved, but the top eyelid can also twitch. Most eye twitches come and go, although they can last for weeks or even months. While the exact cause of eye twitching is unknown, the most common factors that increase Myokymia are stress, fatigue, antihistamine use, caffeine consumption and eyestrain. Alcohol use, dry eye and allergies can also contribute to eye twitching. Unfortunately, this kind of eye twitching can be hard to treat.

Almost all sudden-onset eyelid twitching is benign, meaning the condition is not serious or a sign of a medical problem. However, there are more serious forms of eyelid twitching caused by neurological conditions such as blepharospasm or hemifacial spasm. But wait—there is just one thing that you need to do before you rush into the club and start sweating—your pre-exercise screening. Every year, we physical therapists treat plenty of folks who jumped into an exercise program but unfortunately hurt themselves within the first two weeks. These injuries normally occurred because there was already an underlying problem. Tight leg muscles, weak low back, stiff neck, sore shoulders; the possible list of causes is long. exercise program… The solution is receiving a screening from your physical therapist. A qualified physical therapist will be able to determine if there are any factors that may make you prone to specific injuries. Most importantly, they should be able to show you stretches or exercise modifications that will help prevent problems from occurring. So get out there and start exercising, but do it intelligently. Schedule your screening first. You’ll be healthier and you’ll probably achieve results faster.

І LeaderS Last Minute Lucy

WRITTEN BY CANDACE WATKINS, MAYOR OF COVINGTON

I RECEIVED AN EMAIL REMINDER that today is the deadline for my Sophisticated Woman article. I have this great opportunity to get a message to thousands of people across St. Tammany and the clock is running out. I refuse to punt and miss a month. SO… I am thrilled to announce that the Covington Boys and Girls Club will reopen on January 10 with Margie Pouncey-DeBose on board as its new director. Membership applications for renewals and new members will be available at the club in the Rosenwald Gym/Pathways building at 28th and Tyler, and I will be sponsoring the first 100 renewals/new members. Dues are $5 per year for members ages six to 18. Fundraising is gaining momentum and our club will be stronger than ever with great programs. Please visit www.bgcsela.org to learn more and continue donating. We need to broaden our base of support.

The West 30s Revitalization Plan was unveiled recently and the momentum is building to revitalize this very important part of the City. You can view the plan at our website www.cityofcovingtonla.com. And I repeat…if you haven’t been to downtown Covington lately, you haven’t been to downtown Covington. There is always something new to discover and lots of things to enjoy over and over again. The Trailhead Museum is open and operating Wednesdays and Fridays 10 a.m.–2 p.m., Saturdays 10 a.m.–4p.m. and Sunday 12 p.m.–4 p.m. The History of Covington exhibit is fabulous and the film, Our Little Town, Our Covington, is gorgeous and a must see. The Trailhead Museum is located at 419 N. New Hampshire Street. We hope to host field trips for students in the New Year. So I might be last minute Lucy today, but I didn’t miss the deadline! Happy 2011.

I am thrilled to announce that the Covington Boys and Girls Club will reopen on January 10 with Margie Pouncey-DeBose on board as its new director.

New Year—New Changes

WRITTEN BY DONALD VILLERE,

Sophisticated Woman | January 2011

MAYOR OF MANDEVILLE

THE NEW YEAR promises to bring new ideas to the City of Mandeville. Our operational audit should be completed by early January and we will consider any recommendations that need to be made for our city to function more efficiently. We are also awaiting the first stage of results from the Resiliency Plan Study which should be concluded at the end of this month or early February. The first stage covered the existing conditions assessment, a visioning design for the community in the B3 area, and education and implementation assistance. This analysis stage is significant and must precede the master planning effort, in order to provide the designers with the input they need to create a complete and successful town master plan. Following the analysis, the next two stages will include drawing the master plan and

then full implementation. This will involve the administration, council and various other professionals prior to completion. We are excited that this will bring new life to our city, and a new look that will marry our past history and future prosperity. We have also formed a new historic preservation committee. This committee will study and recommend issues that may arise concerning our new historic district in Old Mandeville. Many of you are aware that the first decade of this century included a troublesome time for the City. But the tide has turned and we have moved ahead not only to a place of integrity, but a new future, a strong outlook, and a return of confidence for our citizens and residents who are proud to call Mandeville their home.

We are also awaiting the first stage of results from the Resiliency Plan Study which should be concluded at the end of this month or early February. Continued on page 32

New Leadership

WRITTEN BY TOM SHELDON, WEST ST. TAMMANY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE MEMBER GULF COAST BANK & TRUST

EFFECTIVE LEADERSHIP is extremely important to the vitality and growth of any volunteer organization. Our chamber is fortunate to have a Board of Directors and Executive Committee comprised of a wide range of individuals who understand our purpose and mission. Together, they work to promote business in the community, provide programs and activities that benefit our 1,000 plus members, and strengthen the business climate of St. Tammany Parish. Each person has donated a great deal of time, energy and expertise to advancing our goals and objectives and has demonstrated leadership by accomplishing specific objectives critical to our mission. Our 2011 board chairman will be Lisa Blossman of City Business North Shore Report. Having served her first three-year term from 2003-2005, she was nominated to return to our board last year after

New Year—New Tax Season

WRITTEN BY DAWN SHARPE-BRACKETT, Sophisticated Woman | January 2011

EAST ST. TAMMANY

AS THE NEW YEAR BEGINS, so does the preparation of taxes. In reviewing these topics with a local tax expert, he offered the following suggestions based on the laws in place at the time of this writing. Tax rates? The tax rates we have been subject to in 2010 now seem to be extended through 2011, and probably 2012. The top rate of 35 percent should remain in place, for now. Capital gains? Before we discuss the technical part of this, please heed this advice: IF you have unrealized losses in your non-qualified investments (outside of retirement plans) and have no losses yet in the year,

consider selling the “dogs” to create at least $3,000 of losses. You can always buy them back after 30 days. Meanwhile, the long-term (held over one year) capital gains rates should remain at their historic low of 15 percent. Dividend income will also follow this lower rate for this two year “extension.” Estate taxes? Talk about a “ping pong” area of the tax world. Ten years ago, the amount of your estate free from this “death tax,” was one million dollars, then up to $3,500,000 in 2009, then infinity in 2010 (yes, no tax on your already taxed worldly possessions), and now 2011? $5,000,000 is our new number, for two years.

CHAMBER OF COMMERCE CEO

IF you have unrealized losses in your non-qualified investments (outside of retirement plans) and have no losses yet in the year, consider selling the “dogs” to create at least $3,000 of losses.
