Behind the Scenes

YOU’LL NORMALLY FIND all our cover girls busy seeing patients, delivering babies or caring for their own families. All enjoyed a morning of pampering before their Enterprising Woman photo shoot. Dr. Pagan and Dr. Cresap had their hair and makeup styled courtesy of Paris Parker Salon and Spa in Mandeville by stylists Erica Lee and Stephanie Demarco. Meanwhile, Dr. Williams enjoyed a morning at d’Novo Salon with stylist Sandra Dufour. Afterward, we headed over to Dr. Williams’ home in Covington to complete the shoot with our cover photographer, Steve Randon. For more behind the scenes photos, visit our website at SophisticatedWoman.com.

ONE OF THE BEST things about my job is all the great women (and men) I get to meet and work with on our photo shoots. This month’s issue was no exception. Our Cover shoot was on one of those beautiful December days when the weather cooperated. The Sophisticated Woman team took a drive to the shoot location. The doctors, Williams, Cresap and Pagan surrounded by their husbands, children, four dogs and a pony enjoyed a fun filled photo shoot where it really was all about family. The Fashion Editor’s photo shoot took us to the lakefront in Mandeville. On a very cold day our model, Olivia Ruby, braved the elements and undertook a mini workout whilst modeling some great workout wear chosen by our Fashion Editor, Patty Beal. You can find some more great photographs and behind the scenes looks from our photo shoots on our website SophisticatedWoman.com. Each month we strive to find stories, ideas and to meet the people who own the businesses here on the Northshore. In this month’s issue, we look to help everyone with their New Year’s resolutions with an informative health care and fitness section. Don’t forget that our voting starts this month, for our Enterprising Woman of the Year, the winner will be announced at our Annual Hats Off Luncheon on April 11. Our Northshore’s Best voting is also open for our readers to vote for their local favorites in over 150 different categories. Have a happy and healthy new year!

MOST OF US make New Year’s resolutions—many of which have to do with our health and fitness. Maybe we want to lose 10 pounds, exercise more often, lower our cholesterol or eat healthier. Here are a few tips to help you keep your New Year’s resolutions for 2014. -Set Goals: So you want to lose 10 pounds? Try committing to losing a pound per week or 5 pounds by February. Setting short-term goals that are more attainable than your overall “resolution list” helps motivate you to keep going. -Stay Active: Be consistent with your fitness goals, and don’t get too far ahead of yourself. If you want to run a marathon by the end of the year, don’t start off with a full sprint to the finish line. Try to mix up your fitness routines to keep them fresh and fun so that you’ll want to do it the next day. -Stay Healthy: Health and wellness have as much to do with how you take care of your body as what you do with it. The new year is as good a time as any for annual check ups to make sure you are in prime condition to reach your goals. -Nutrition Matters: Remember the old saying, “You are what you eat.” We all ate one helping too many of the mystery casserole at some point this holiday season. No matter how many reps you are doing at the gym- if you don’t think about what goes into your body, you won’t get what you want out of it. This month we are featuring a wide range of doctors, fitness and health professionals who can help you reach your health goals for 2014.

ORTHOPAEDICS

From Athlete Rehabilitation to Osteoarthritis Solutions— New Procedures Offer Non-Surgical Options for Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Patients

Sophisticated Woman | January 2014

WRITTEN BY JILL WILLIE PHOTOS BY CLAIRE THOMAS

8

KEVIN F. DARR, MD, a board certified orthopaedic surgeon, spends time keeping up with the latest surgical techniques. What is most interesting, however, is that Dr. Darr is also dedicating much of his time to innovative non-surgical treatment options for his patients. In recent years, he has introduced minimally invasive technologies and orthobiologic therapies that build upon the body’s own healing abilities. “Orthopaedics has changed to the point that we can offer a variety of treatment options, often in conjunction with one another, to reduce pain and increase range of motion. Treatments such as Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) and ARP Wave™ can be used in lieu of surgery or as part of a post-surgical regimen to accelerate recovery,” Dr. Darr explained. Of the technologies at his disposal, Dr. Darr said he is most excited about the PRP procedure that has the potential to heal and regenerate tendons, ligaments and cartilage using one’s own (autologous) blood. After a patient’s blood is drawn, it is placed in a centrifuge, which concentrates the platelets that are used to stimulate healing once injected into the damaged tissue. Dr. Darr’s certification in Musculoskeletal Ultrasound enables him to use this ultrasound technology to ensure that PRP injections are made to the precise location of damage. Recognizing the vast implications of orthobiologics in orthopaedics—specifically in the areas of cell therapy and osteoarthritis, Dr. Darr is currently participating in an IRB approved research study on “The Safety and Effectiveness of Cell Therapy on Pain and Inflammation Associated with Osteoarthritis.” According to Dr. Darr, the one-year study is open to adults with osteoarthritis (either from chronic injury or degeneration) whose condition has been unresponsive to standard medications. Dr. Darr is actively accepting patients into the study and patients can see if they are a candidate by contacting his office. The study is in its initial months and Dr. Darr states that “he has seen a positive response from patients interested in having a new cell therapy option through this approved study.”

“Orthopaedics has changed to the point that we can offer a variety of treatment options, often in conjunction with one another, to reduce pain and increase range of motion.” “Osteoarthritis used to be considered a disease for the elderly, but that is not the case anymore,” Dr. Darr said. “Our society is becoming more active, our youth are participating in a variety of different sports and training is becoming more intense. We are seeing people develop arthritis at an earlier age.” “Orthobiologics, including PRP and the Cell Therapy study are so exciting because they have the potential to improve the quality of life for so many people. In many cases patients will experience initial results in a matter of days, with continued improvement over months,” he said. ARP Wave™ technology uses a series of external bio-electrical currents to stimulate the healing process. Approved by the FDA for prevention and treatment of muscle atrophy, ARP Wave™ increases blood circulation and muscle relaxation while improving and increasing a patient’s range of motion. ARP Wave™ therapy is administered daily for two to three weeks. The sessions range from 30-40 minutes and can be easily incorporated into a patient’s work schedule. Because there are very few contra-indications for ARP Wave™, Dr. Darr feels the technology will be successful in treating a variety of orthopaedic disorders among different patient populations. “Orthopaedics and sports medicine include such a broad spectrum of patients, each with his or her own particular needs and goals. For professional athletes who are rehabbing from surgery and want to accelerate their recovery process, the ARP Wave™ is a great tool. For those looking for non-surgical alternatives to relieve joint pain, PRP offers an exciting solution. For patients with severe injuries, a combination of these therapies may be used. And for those patients who are not experiencing a sufficient level of relief, the therapies do not interfere with surgical options,” he said. Dr. Darr added that he also sees amateur and pro athletes who don’t have any medical problems at all. “These are people who want to target muscle areas and improve their strength and conditioning programs. For them, we have the DEXA Scan.”

LEFT: Dr. Kevin Darr proudly displays the DEXA Scan machine, the only one of its kind on the Northshore. RIGHT: Dr. Darr, Shelly Vincens and Charnell Dimiceli demonstrate the uses of the ARP Wave™ machine.

By identifying bone mineral density (BMD), the DEXA (Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) Scan is extremely useful in identifying osteoporosis, overall muscle strength and body composition. The scan consists of one high energy and one low energy X-ray beam that pass through the bone. Low BMD at the site of the scan is a predictor of bone fractures in other parts of the body. As the only machine of its kind on the Northshore, the DEXA Scan that Dr. Darr uses also identifies composition of body fat and lean tissue in both percentages and pounds. As he explained, “The scan allows us to compare the left and right side of the body and look at different regions of the body. With this technology, we can look at overall muscle strength, identify where patients are prone to storing fat, and pinpoint muscle weakness and muscle imbalances that need correcting.” “We provide people with quantifiable measurements that they can use to address specific muscle deficiencies,” Dr. Darr said. “Patients can take their measurements to a trainer, or we can refer them to one, to develop a targeted exercise regimen. Eight weeks later, they can take a second DEXA Scan in order to monitor their results.” Whether improving performance, relieving pain, healing injuries or preventing degenerative conditions, Dr. Darr can employ a combination of non-operative and operative treatment methods. “It is exciting to match the specific needs of my patients with the most appropriate treatment option. We work together to help them achieve their goals.” Kevin F. Darr, MD is board certified in orthopaedic surgery, sports medicine and musculoskeletal ultrasound. His office is located at 19343 Sunshine Avenue in Covington. For more information, call 985-273-5888 or visit his website covingtonortho.com.

THE FERTILITY INSTITUTE

І health

Highly Specialized Technology Gives Couples New Options in Fertility WRITTEN BY JILL WILLIE

FOR WOMEN WHO PLAN to start their families later in life, seeing a fertility specialist earlier in the process may be the key to their success. As women age, the quality and quantity of their eggs decreases significantly. While the most drastic decrease is in women between ages of 35 and 40, the infertility rate among women in the 30-34 age range has tripled since 1985. With more than 14,000 pregnancies since its inception in 1976, the Fertility Institute continues to be a source of hope for infertile couples. Beginning with the first successful in vitro fertilization (IVF) in the Gulf South in 1983, the Fertility Institute has amassed a list of firsts in its field including the first successful IVF pregnancy in a woman over age 44 in the United States.

With more than 14,000 pregnancies since its inception in 1976, the Fertility Institute continues to be a source of hope for infertile couples.

Dr. Steven Taylor Dr. Steven Taylor is board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology. He has been with the Fertility Institute for more than 30 years and is known for his success with in vitro fertilization, ovulation induction and intrauterine insemination. Dr. Peter Y. Lu Dr. Lu, board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology and Reproductive Endocrinology, studied genetics at Cornell University. At the Fertility Institute, Dr. Lu has a focus on assisted reproductive technology like in vitro fertilization and intracytoplasmic sperm injection and pre-implantation genetic diagnosis.

Sophisticated Woman | January 2014

Today, the Fertility Institute continues to be a leader in the field of infertility. State of the art treatment and technology, coupled with almost 40 years experience, has resulted in one of the highest success rates for IVF in women under the age of 35. For women who are faced with impaired fertility due to medical treatments or increased age, the Institute offers egg cryopreservation for fertilization at a later date or donor egg options. In fact, the Fertility Institute was the first clinic in the Gulf South to achieve a birth from an egg donation. In addition to IVF, physicians at the Fertility Institute perform a range of treatment modalities ranging from basic laser laparoscopy for endometriosis to intracytoplasmic sperm injection and pre-implementation genetic screening. They can also accelerate evaluation procedures and treatment plans based on a patient’s age and condition. With the advancements in fertility treatment, specifically in the area of egg cryopreservation, the Fertility Institute recommends that women over the age of 30, who have not conceived after six months of trying, should have a fertility evaluation. It is important to note that the Institute accepts all major insurance plans, most of which cover an initial fertility evaluation. It also offers financing options for in vitro fertilization. The Fertility Institute has offices in Mandeville, Metairie and Baton Rouge. New patients, whether physician- or self-referred, are welcome at any of the Fertility Institute’s clinics. Call for an appointment at 800-375-0048. Visit their website FertilityInstitute.com.

Dr. Richard Dickey Dr. Richard Dickey, is board certified in Reproductive Endocrinology, Obstetrics and Gynecology and founder of the Fertility Institute of New Orleans. Dr. Dickey and his staff have achieved many firsts since 1976, including performing the first successful in vitro fertilization procedure in the Gulf South in 1983.

Local Housewife Discovers Age-Defying Secret and Creates Home Based Business WRITTEN BY ANNA GRUNDMANN

“After the first four days I started getting compliments on my skin. At that point I was convinced, and I just had to share and let everyone know.”

Before

After

THERESA DEMARIE and her husband of 32 years, P.J. Demarie, have raised four children together, the youngest of whom is a senior at Mandeville High School. Recently, she and her husband discovered the age-defying treatment program of Nerium International—and they haven’t looked back. A skeptic, like most, Theresa wasn’t prepared for the incredible results of the anti-aging “miracle cream” that a friend recommended to her. “I didn’t want to try it,” she said, “I thought it would make me break out at worst and be ineffective at best. I was

being stubborn about it, so P.J. started using it and I noticed that it was actually making a difference. I didn’t want to prove him right, so I waited until he fell asleep to use it—after the first four days I started getting compliments on my skin. At that point I was convinced, and I just had to share and let everyone know.” Nerium Interational promotes this type of sharing, and encourages their brand partners, like Theresa, to spread the word. The NeriumAD products are sold exclusively by brand partners—you won’t find them on

a retail shelf. Their vision, “Making People Better,” includes offering quality products, lucrative business opportunities and endless resources to encourage personal development. The science behind Nerium’s products involves an accidental discovery made when researching the uses of the Nerium oleander plant. Scientists discovered the unique agedefying properties that the Nerium oleander provided when applied to the skin and developed a patented extraction process. The paraben-free and noncomedogenic cream contains no harsh chemicals and works naturally to improve the skin’s appearance. But the true test lies in the results. Whether your skin is aging and you want to reduce your wrinkles and even out your skin tone, or you have vibrant skin and you want to retain that youthful, healthy glow, NeriumAD’s exclusive formula addresses multiple concerns at once. It helps to brighten, tighten and even out skin tone, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, improve texture and hydration. Men and women alike can benefit from the results NeriumAD offers. Both Theresa and P.J. rave about the effects Nerium International has had on their lives in such a short time. “Do your research, ask around,” says Theresa, “the results people are getting are not only incredible but also consistent. But don’t take my word for it, try it yourself.” To contact Theresa’s NeriumAD team for more information or a five day sample, you can call Theresa Demarie, 504-512-8156; Dr. Stephanie Shultis or Heather Harris 985-898-1940; Erinn Demarie 985-630-3217; or Colleen Sheehan 985-249-9134. EXERCISE

1/3 Vertical Bleed

Trim Size 3.22 x 10.75” Get in Shape— Bleed Size 3.50 x 11” Even (live if You area) Hurt 2.47” x 10” JANUARY IS A GREAT TIME to start an exer1/3 Vertical Non-Bleed cise program. It’s a new year and with our 2.43” x 8.875” sub-tropical climate in Louisiana, bathing suit weather is a few short months away. The chances are you are already starting to think about working out again. But plenty of people aren’t sure if they can exercise effectively, because they hurt. Knees are a common problem and back pain is famous for turning folks into couch potatoes. A good friend of mine contacted me this week. His wrists hurt from sports injuries when he was younger. In fact, they hurt so badly that he is not sure if it’s worth even getting to the gym. I explained that it definitely is possible for him to get the results he is seeking. By evaluating his wrists and taking the time to understand his goals, I am going to put a great plan together for him that works around his problem.

Don’t let health problems or pain stop you from receiving all the benefits of exercise. Health club equipment has developed over the years to the point that just using different, updated machines may be all you need to do. Many facilities also have machine attachments that can eliminate load on certain joints. There is always more than one way to skin a cat. If you are looking to lose weight or gain muscle, then you can bet there is a solution. So don’t let health problems or pain stop you from receiving all the benefits of exercise. Find an exercise-minded physical therapist; one who lives what he preaches about staying healthy, and have him/her find a way for you to get the results you want.

Physical Therapist Matt Slimming, owner of STAR Physical Therapy 2 0 11 and STAR Fitness Center has practiced on the Northshore in Covington, Folsom and Slidell for 20 years. Contact Matt at 985-893-2845, StarFitnessCenter.com, StarPTClinics.com.

DERMATOLOGY

І health

What’s in Your Dermatologist? IN THE MIDDLE AGES, expert skill in any discipline, from medicine to masonry, was learned and validated by serving an apprenticeship for years before being declared a master by a group of masters—the guild. The guild’s standards of excellence, ethics and conduct insured quality and professionalism throughout generations. One look at an ancient cathedral attests to the success of this method. In modern medicine, this same principle is still applied, as specialties require a long apprenticeship after graduation from medical school. Rigorous training in a discipline, from the most basic molecular level through the most complex clinical level, is required. In the case of dermatology, the apprenticeship—including general, surgical, and cosmetic aspects of this specialty—usually lasts four years after becoming a medical doctor, culminating in a comprehensive national board exam given by the masters. Beyond this, experts in the field continue to pass on skills and wisdom to fellow specialists. This is what it takes to become and remain a board certified specialist. However, current law allows those with medical degrees to call themselves by any specialty they choose! There are some physicians who have never had one day of accredited specialty training—much less years—who advertise themselves widely as dermatologists or other types of specialists. Ironically, even the master masons who laid stone in the Middle Ages were self-governed by stricter standards, which attributes to why their work has stood the test of the ages. Should you require treatment from a dermatologist, board certified dermatology specialists in our area are numerous and well trained. They will readily verify if they are certified by the American Board of Dermatology. Dr. Robert Benson is a board-certified dermatologist and experienced cosmetic surgeon with dermatology offices in Ponchatoula (985-370-7546) and Covington (985-898-7999). QnA Cosmetic Surgery (985-370-0662) provides advanced laser and cosmetic treatments performed by Dr. Benson. Call or visit BensonDerm.com.

Brain Works Academy— Solution for Brain Function Improvement FOR THOSE WHO experience symptoms associated with ADD, ADHD, autism, anxiety, insomnia, brain injury or other disorders, Neurofeedback or brain-training can be a successful option for non-invasive therapy. “Brain-training is a way to help balance out brain waves in lieu of or in addition to medication therapy,” says Cheryl Schoenberger, RRT, a Neurofeedback Technician and the development coordinator for Brain Works Academy. “This type of therapy has successfully improved the brain function of clients worldwide for over 30 years. Clients from small children to adults can benefit from this process which strengthens synaptic connections in the brain.”

for Women…At All Stages

After a free consultation with a neurofeedback technician to assess treatment goals, clients are administered a Quantitative electroencephalogram (QEEG). The QEEG gives technicians a color map or snapshot of the synapses of the brain. During neurofeedback training, seven sensors are placed on the scalp in the specified areas designated on the QEEG, enabling the practitioner to view brain wave data. “During the training session the client will either play a game or watch a movie controlled solely by their brain activity, not the computer,” says Cheryl. For example—the game will slow down if the client is distracted and will move faster if the client is focused. These sessions allow clients to retrain their own brain, and over time, the brain remembers this training and is proven to improve brain function. І DRS. CRESAP, WILLIAMS AND PAGAN

Center for Women’s Health Where Family is of Utmost Importance WRITTEN BY JILL WILLIE PHOTOS BY STEVE RANDON

AS THE MOTHERS of a teen, tween, two pre-schoolers and a toddler, it’s no wonder the physicians at Center for Women’s Health have an innate understanding of the roles women play in their families—as wives, mothers, daughters and sisters. Dr. Katherine L. Williams and her associates Dr. Rachael Cresap and Dr. Lisandra Pagan bring more than their shared experiences to their patients. They bring their exceptional credentials, commitment to quality care and expertise as surgeons. From infertility to pregnancy, from motherhood to menopause, they help their patients through some of life’s biggest milestones. One of the most respected OB-GYNs in the region, Dr. Williams has been helping bring families to fruition since 1998. In addition to being a leader in the medical community (serving as physician representative

on the St. Tammany Hospital Board of Commissioners, chairwoman of the Louisiana Medical Disclosure Panel and an active member of the Louisiana State Medical Society,) Dr. Williams is also certified to perform and train other physicians in da Vinci Robotic surgery. She has performed more than 400 successful robotic surgeries, drastically reducing her patients’ hospital stays while also accelerating recovery. Dr. Williams finds great fulfillment in the connection she develops with each of her patients. She excitedly shared her experience of a delivery she had just completed where she worked with the Red Cross to bring a solider home from Kuwait in time to be present for the birth of his child. “I was able to witness him seeing his son for the first time. I watched him experience something he and his wife wanted for so long.”

As working mothers themselves, Drs. Williams, Cresap and Pagan make sure they spend time keeping their own families as happy and healthy as they keep their patients. To be a part of such happy occasions is also what helped Dr. Cresap ultimately decide to become an OB-GYN. “For families, the day their children are born are the happiest days of their lives. It’s wonderful to share that experience with my patients.” Dr. Cresap continued, “I really like the continuity that comes with treating patients long term.” Dr. Cresap became involved with the Center for Women’s Health following her residency at Ochsner Medical Center in New Orleans. A graduate of Tulane Medical School, she met her husband while an undergraduate student at LSU. Because both of their families are from the Baton Rouge area, she said she knew they would settle within a two-hour drive time from their hometown. “I immediately felt at home with Dr. Williams. She has the same ideals and philosophy on patient care as I do. I knew it would be a great place to work, and I was right,” she said. “We have an environment where our patients can ask questions and know they are going to get the time with us to fully answer them,” Dr. Cresap said. “We make ourselves approachable and available to our patients.”

The group credits nurse practitioner, Kelly Brewster, MSN, WHNP, with ensuring that medical staff have the tools and training they need to provide the highest quality patient care. As Medical Director and an excellent women’s health nurse practitioner, she manages continuing education programs, implements quality standards, and manages administrative duties all while giving exemplary care to her patients. “With her administrative skills and her health care background, we have really grown by leaps and bounds,” Dr. Williams said. “I get compliments every day from my peers about how wonderfully our group has come together. I have a great sense of pride about that.” One of the newest reasons the group is continuing to excel in patient care is the addition of Dr. Lisandra Pagan. A native of Puerto Rico who is fluent in Spanish, Dr. Pagan completed her residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Richmond University Medical Center in New York. In addition to serving as administrative chief resident, she was honored with the Award for Excellence in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery. Sophisticated Woman | January 2014

Dr. Pagan joined the practice in August 2013. Like Dr. Cresap, she knew immediately that the Center for Women’s Health was a perfect fit for her personally and professionally. “It was love at first sight,” she joked. “No other office could fulfill all I was looking for.” With a special interest in infertility, high-risk pregnancy and minimally invasive surgery, Dr. Pagan said she always knew she wanted to be a doctor. She grew up around medical professionals because her sister Jessica has cerebral palsy. Dr. Pagan noted that leaving Puerto Rico was probably one of the most difficult decisions she’s ever had to make. “I always helped my parents with my sister and did not want them to think I was abandoning them.” She explained that when her husband (whom she met and married while in medical school), was matched with a surgical training program in New York, she was hesitant to move with him. “My parents encouraged me to go, to pursue my own life and dreams.” As working mothers themselves, Drs. Williams, Cresap and Pagan make sure they spend time keeping their own families as happy and healthy as they keep their patients. When Dr. Williams built their new office in 2009, she made sure there was a place for their children to visit. Her own children, 7th and 4th graders at Christ Episcopal School, spend their afternoons in the office doing homework before they head home as a family. In addition to a weekly ritual of a communal dinner, Dr. Williams and her husband Thad Devier (a commercial contractor who built the Center for Women’s Health) spend the week after Christmas on

22

a family road trip. “We determine an area of the country, make a few hotel reservations and then just go,” Dr. Williams said. “It is a great time for us to be together. We laugh the whole time.” Dr. Cresap’s husband Randy, an attorney by trade, has taken time off from his career to stay home with their children, ages four and two. Passing on their own love for their alma mater, Dr. Cresap noted that their oldest is already well versed in cheering, “Geaux Tigers!” Dr. Pagan and her husband, Orlando celebrated their son Diego’s first birthday (and Christening) in November with a whirlwind trip back to Puerto Rico. She is committed to making sure his grandparents are as involved as possible—even at 1,600 miles away—by using Facetime and Skype, along with regular visits. It is interesting to note that none of the physicians knew they wanted to specialize in OB-GYN until they completed their rotations in the field. As Dr. Cresap said, “Being an OB-GYN is something you either love or you hate. Those who hate it know from the very beginning. But if you love it, it quickly becomes your passion.” For Dr. Williams, she realized it was a field where she could make a difference. “There are so many physical and emotional challenges that we face as women—many of which I’ve experienced in my own life. It has given me an added perspective and made me a better doctor. It is certainly my calling. Center for Women’s Health is located at 104 Innwood Drive in Covington. To reach them you can call 985-249-7022 or visit their website. klwmd.com.

ONE OF OUR annual traditions is buying calendars. I usually get a New Yorker because I love the cartoons. Theme calendars help us enjoy measuring time and account for time ahead. I like turning the pages to see the next cartoon. This year, 2014, has 365 1/4 days. I figured out that days might be a good way to measure time. If I get to be 100 years of age, I will have lived 36,500 days. When I celebrated my 10th birthday, I had lived 3,650 days and 10 more of those decades is 36,500. Seems like a short spin. One of my young friends, Adam Tabor, is a senior in high school this year. Adam loves turtles and the concept of infinity. I can see how these interests have something in common. Things moving slowly along allows for progress. Fortunately, most of the people that I see in counseling have more days 1/3 Square ahead of them than behind. point this “fact” 5.05” x I4.35” out to them because that knowledge often gives people hope that they can enjoy some of the changes that they may decide to make in their lives. Records show documentation of the time of birth and last breath of life. Between those significant events, some discover that they cannot manage time but learn to manage themselves. So I end with these other thoughts and phrases about time: on time, past time, time to go, in time, out of time, what time, it’s time, what about time, and next time.

Michelle Demarest— Family Law

Family Law Attorney Michelle Demarest provides divorcing couples with an alternative to traditional litigation.

WRITTEN BY JILL WILLIE PHOTO BY CLAIRE THOMAS

is well equipped to handle a variety of family law disputes including divorce, custody and visitation, child and spousal support, and property and asset division. Michelle is an experienced litigator, having practiced law in Louisiana since 1991. It wasn’t until she went through her own divorce, however, that she felt compelled to pursue family law. She experienced, first hand, the difficulties in maneuvering

through the family law court system. “I decided I wanted to provide clients with the resources and counsel I wish I had been given,” Michelle said. In 2005, Michelle began her training in collaborative law. An alternative to litigation, collaborative law is a practice where attorneys from both parties work with a mental health professional, child expert and financial expert to resolve family law issues. She said she knew immediately that she had found her passion. “I enjoyed family law, but I hadn’t really found my niche until I started looking into innovative ways to resolve conflict. The team approach that we take in collaborative law encourages divorcing couples to forge a common path toward co-parenting their children,” she said. In addition to collaborative law, Michelle is also trained in both general and family/ custody mediation. This is a conflict resolution technique where opposing parties forgo trial proceedings and agree to work out differences through an independent mediator. “When divorcing couples go into court to ‘win,’ there are sure to be long-term implications—especially when children are involved,” she explained. “My goal is for my clients to retain ownership throughout the divorce process; to find common ground or problem solve rather than to leave the decisions in the hands of a judge.” Michelle said her personal and professional experiences enable her to provide compassionate counsel. In fact, the office phones are answered all hours of the day and night to help clients through stressful situations. “We want to help our clients move on with their lives as quickly and painlessly as possible.” Michelle regularly appears on the WWL New Orleans radio show “All Things Legal,” and has provided commentary on Garland Robinette’s program. She was also named Best Attorney of the Northshore by Sophisticated Woman Magazine readers in the 2009 Northshore’s Best competition. Michelle R. ESTATE PLANNING

The Binder

WRITTEN BY RONDA M. GABB

A NEW YEAR’S resolution for 2014 should be to create “The Binder” for your loved ones in the event of your death or disability. Then, “The Binder” should be revisited every January, for the rest of your life. “The Binder” should include: Copies of all your estate planning documents: Last Wills and Testaments, Trusts, Powers of Attorney, and Living Wills. If you have prearranged for donating your body to science, include copies of this paperwork. If you have prepaid or preplanned your funeral, be sure to include copies. If you wish to be cremated, be sure your family is aware of your wishes. If you own burial plots or mausoleum crypts, these deeds should be included. Declaration pages, or coverage and companies, of all life insurance policies: Any and all beneficiary-driven assets, such as life insurances, annuities and all retirement plans - IRAs, 401ks, should have confirmed copies of the named beneficiaries (both primary and contingent) that were chosen. The cover page of your year-end statements of all assets, such as bank accounts, brokerage accounts, and retirement plans: You should also keep a copy of all deeds to real estate owned (wherever located), as well as all vehicle, boat and trailer titles and registrations. It is also a

good idea to keep a copy of fire and flood insurance declaration pages for all assets (and all vehicle insurance too). Statements of liabilities: Upon your death or disability, your loved ones need to know what bills must be paid, so also include all mortgage and vehicle year-end loan balance statements as well as credit card (and any other) debts. This includes copies of promissory notes from anyone that you have loaned money to (especially your children). If you know how you wish for your personal property to be divided, we highly recommend leaving an “ethical will” (basically a handwritten letter) that lists to whom you wish to leave non-titled assets to. This can go a long way with keeping your loved ones from fighting over assets that are highly sentimental yet of very little monetary value. But most importantly, you must tell your loved ones where to find “The Binder” in the event of your death or disability.

WHETHER YOU’RE ADDING a few Italian favorites to your everyday recipe repertoire or planning a complete dinner, meal planning with Italian foods can be simple and enjoyable. Introduce friends and family members to Italian cuisine with an irresistible antipasto or entree or plan an entire meal in the traditional Italian fashion. But whenever you’re planning meals, not just Italian, remember to keep it simple and consider the compatibility of textures, colors, and flavor. Serve a crisp-textured side dish with a soft textured main dish. Contrast a mild first course with a zesty second course. Balance a hot food with a cold accompaniment. Serve a less colorful food with a bright partner. And plan a light dessert for a hearty meal (as Italians usually do). Ciao. Buon Appetito. Buon Anno!

THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF MRS. TOM THUMB contains more thrills, chills and heartbreak than a circus sideshow. Author, Melanie Benjamin, portrays Mercy Lavinia “Vinnie” 1/6 Vertical Warren Bump, a.k.a. Mrs. Tom Thumb as 2.43” x 4.35” an irrepressible and inspiring woman who refuses to be limited by her thirty-two inch stature. Even before she meets the larger-than-life P. T. Barnum and marries the world-renowned General Tom Thumb, she knew what she wanted and set out to get it without losing a bit of her nerve or her dignity. After accepting a socially acceptable position as a schoolteacher in her hometown, she soon defies her parents, setting out in 1853 to perform as a “curiosity” aboard a Mississippi River showboat. From the boat, the adventures continue with Barnum’s American Museum, a three-year world tour and back home to the U.S. where new challenges await. During a time when women’s career choices consisted of marriage or a few prescribed low-paying jobs, Vinnie never set limits for herself. During her travels she faced threats posed by the American Civil War, Wild West outlaws, Indian attacks, and fire hazards, not to mention challenges associated with being a diminutive woman. She paid a dear price for her adventures, jeopardizing relationships, especially those who were closest to her. Melanie Benjamin is the best-selling author of such acclaimed historical novels as Alice I Have Been1/3 and Square The Aviator’s Wife.

5.05” 4.35” Autobiography of xMrs. Tom

Follow Mother Nature’s Example for the New Year WRITTEN BY ANNA RIBBECK

know or just let them decompose into something new and stronger. Mother Nature’s idea of cleansing always provides some sort of rebirth. It is not an overnight process. Her idea of resolution is a slow recurring theme. It is constant and requires many variables to occur. Realizing this will prepare us for the year ahead, not only in the garden, but in all walks of life. So, as January rolls around this year, resolve to follow the lead of Mother Nature. Take time to let things develop! Remember to let ideas change and bloom over time. Use the rake, the clippers, the shovel and the broom inside your mind as well as outside in the yard and you will find yourself in tune with nature’s resolve! Happy New Year and Happy Gardening!

Let us do it!

THE NEW YEAR BEGINS as a bud—tight with anticipation. How do we get this year to unfold into the beautiful blossom we hope it to be? Let Mother Nature be your teacher! Look into the garden and see how she has stripped away the old. Trees stand naked preparing for their fresh cloak of leaves. Do this too! No, don’t run naked through the yard, just shed yesterday’s gardening failures and prepare for success in the spring! Get out the rake and the broom and gather what lays strewn into something useful. All that has fallen can be reused. Whether you collect leaves in your compost bin or mulch them for the garden, they are protecting and becoming a part of what lies deep inside the soil. The same thing applies to your mind— gather the old thoughts and habits, put them to use as fertilizer for things you already

MAYOR OF MANDEVILLE

36

MANDEVILLE WAS CHOSEN as one of 10 communities in Louisiana to participate in the Louisiana Creative Communities Initiative program offered by the State of Louisiana’s Office of Cultural Development. This Committee of community leaders worked together for 6 months to identify the vision, values and goals of the community and received coaching in creative placemaking. The Committee completed the program and received a $3,000 grant to develop a 501c3, Mandeville A.R.T Collaborative. Initial projects will include a Passport through Mandeville celebrating and supporting art, recreations and treasures as well as a public art program. Meanwhile, DOTD continues Hwy 190 road construction in the city and I’m proud to say we are past the half way mark. I want to thank all citizens and visitors

for their patience. Another project under consideration is the widening of Hwy 22 from Dalwill to Northlake Shopping Center. The City and DOTD are also planning a project to relieve traffic congestion under the Hwy 190/22 overpass. Thanks to all who shopped local during the holidays despite the traffic. Our retailers appreciate your loyalty. Finally, I am proud to say Keep Mandeville Beautiful has won a national award for innovative work in the area of litter prevention. Keep America Beautiful will bestow the honor at their national conference in February in Charlotte, North Carolina. KMB is the only affiliate in the State of Louisiana to receive this award and one of only three nationally. For this and more information about Mandeville, visit our website, cityofmandeville.com.

Business Resolutions

WRITTEN BY LIZ ANDERSON, PONCHATOULA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

WE ALL MAKE personal resolutions and promises for the New Year, but what about resolutions for your business? If you want to grow, thrive and make positive progress, these resolutions are just as vital. Here are five to take into consideration. Be creative! Is there something you always wanted to try, but just couldn’t seem to find the time? January 1 is the time to act. Find a new market! Yes, you are highly respected by your current clientele; use this reputation and these references to advance to new customers and a larger fan base. Spend more time thinking. Sometimes we become so busy, ideas pass through our brains with the speed of lightning and never grab on to occipital

lobe. Sit on your porch, look into the sunset, and let the ideas flow. Next, delegate tasks. Yes, this resolution is a difficult one. You want and need to be in control, but others can take on some of the menial tasks that take your time away from productivity. Speaking of increased productivity, the last resolution may be the most difficult. Take some time to relax and put your feet up. Turn off the computer, get outside, breathe some fresh air, and reflect on what’s really important in your life and for your future. You, your business, and your family will benefit. Your business resolution list is complete. Now, on to that diet and exercise plan!

Recognizing Committee Leaders

WRITTEN BY LACEY TOLEDANO, WEST ST. TAMMANY CHAMBER OF COMMERCE PRESIDENT

NOBODY KNOWS St. Tammany West business better than the people who live it each day through their Chamber leadership positions. Committee members are the people behind the Chamber name and mission, and at the forefront are dedicated leaders serving as chairmen. We’d like to thank our outgoing committee chairs who diligently served in 2013: Melissa Penzato with Allstate/Penzato Insurance Agency, who led the Ambassador’s Council, responsible for membership retention and welcoming new members; Laura Cressy of Clarion Inn & Suites, who chaired the Cultural Economy Committee, recognizing the local arts for their important economic and quality of life contributions; Rick Dennie of New York Life, who led the Governmental Affairs Committee (assisted by Andy Gibson of Kahn, Swick & Foti), that monitors business-related legislation and advises the Board when a

position needs to be taken; Maria Landry of Fleur-deLis Insurance who chaired the Small Business Council, which assists with EXPO, Business Appreciation Awards, and ensuring our members stay informed of news and issues affecting them; Kyle Beerbohm with P.J. Demarie & Associates, who led our Northshore Rising Professionals, focusing on professional development programs and community service projects; and Melissa Hodgson with St. Tammany Parish Hospital, who led our Communications Committee, the working group that advises on marketing opportunities and strategies. We are grateful for their leadership and encourage all members to get involved to reap personal and professional rewards in this new year! Look for committee event information to be announced on our website and social media.

New Changes in St. Tammany Parish

38

WRITTEN BY PAT BRISTER, ST. TAMMANY PARISH PRESIDENT

WE WANT TO WISH everyone a Happy New Year on behalf of St. Tammany Parish Government. 2014 begins with a sense of excitement and anticipation, as several changes will happen in our Parish. Look for a newly updated, more user-friendly website from stpgov.org. Our new feature called Be the Brain Behind the Change, was created specifically for every citizen to interact with us and offer ideas, no matter how big or how small, rooted in positive change for our community. The newly rehabbed St. Tammany Fishing Pier will officially open on January 11, with a long-awaited celebration. We will see economic growth this year through the relocation of the Rain CII headquarters, a leading industrial carbon company, from Texas back to

Louisiana — to Covington to be exact. One of our own, homegrown businesses, Pelican Energy Consultants, is set to begin hiring some 195 new positions as they begin the expansion of their engineering center, scheduled for completion in 2018. The Northwestern corner of the Parish will see a new, 60,000 square foot neighborhood shopping center at the junction of Highways 1077 and 1085. A 35,000 square foot specialty food store, Ralph’s Market, will anchor the development. St. Tammany Parish Government is committed to navigating these changes responsibly and preserving our quality of life, a significant factor in our allure as a place to set down roots. We thank each and every one of you for making this a great place to call home.

HELP YOUR CHILD DO BETTER IN SCHOOL! Since 1977, Huntington has helped students of all ages succeed! RENEE K. (3rd Grade)

CHRISTIAN U. (3rd Grade) “School is a lot easier for me now. This is the first time I’ve ever gotten E’s and G’s on my report card! My sisters are even impressed!” “My husband and I are able to see a change in Christian’s confidence, motivation, and attitude toward school work. She was always a hard worker but had difficulty grasping certain skills. Now she is more confident and consistent with her academics. Christian never complains about going to Huntington, and she has grown and become more mature because of Huntington! Most importantly, Christian even notices a difference!” —Lori and Ron U., parents of Christian

“We are so proud of how much Renee accomplished in a very short time. We knew she was having some trouble in school last year despite her good grades. The academic evaluation confirmed these issues and gave her a starting point to reinforce those skills she never quite completely mastered. She loves learning, is thriving in school, and enjoys reading much more than before. We thank all her wonderful teachers at Huntington!” —Michelle and Keith K.

REGAN S. (12th Grade)

BRAEDEN T. (4th Grade)

“Huntington, Your Tutoring Solution helped me realize my potential. With a little guidance and help from the amazing teachers, I was able to reach my goal score and improve my composite 4 points! Thanks to Huntington, I feel confident in my future!”

“Huntington helped me with my reading and also taught me how to solve questions using different strategies. My favorite things about Huntington were the cool books, and I loved working with the teachers. School is much easier now!”

Sophisticated Woman | January 2014

“Huntington, Your Tutoring Solution helped Braeden reach his full potential! We have seen less frustration with Braedan’s school work. The nicest thing, for us as parents, is that he does his own homework. We love the independence and confidence Huntington gave Braeden.” —Gwen and William T., Braeden’s parents

“We invested in our child and her future with the help and support of the caring personable teachers at Huntington Learning Center. Thank You, HLC, in helping Regan reach her goals!” —Roger and Cindy S., Regan’s parents
