publisher’s note
.................................................................................................................................................................................................................
I put a dollar in one of those change machines. Nothing changed. —George Carlin I DON’T KNOW ABOUT YOU, but that’s often been my experience with New Year’s resolutions. I start out optimistically, determined to succeed—to lose those extra pounds, exercise more, eat better, sleep enough and get to the office on time. But then the stresses of everyday life seem to take over, and I slide right back into my old habits. So this year, let’s make a resolution not to make any resolutions! That way, we won’t be setting ourselves up to fail. Instead, we should set a single goal for ourselves: to live in the present, to truly be aware of the now. I think that if we do this, change will come naturally, gradually, and permanently. For example, if we sit at a table and focus on eating a meal, we’ll be more aware of what we’re eating, how it tastes, and how it is affecting our bodies. We’ll most likely eat smaller portions and healthier foods. If we concentrate on the
exercises we’re performing while working out instead of multi-tasking—like watching the news or reading a book—we’ll notice
As for me, I think I’m going to take my own advice this year and see what changes! Happy 2017!
Instead, we should set a single goal for ourselves: to live in the present, to truly be aware of the now. what seems to be making us feel better and challenge ourselves to get stronger. And, for those who just have to have resolutions, you can find help sticking with them from experts like Ronda Gabb (getting your estate plan in order, page 7), Star PT (the STAY STRONG program, page 12) or Northshore personal trainers (page 16). There are also lots of healthy recipes to inspire (page 20).

New Year’s Resolutions WRITTEN BY RONDA M. GABB
AS I WRITE THIS, I still cannot believe that this is my 16th year writing for Sophisticated Woman magazine. My very first article was in January 2001 about New Year’s Resolutions. I am sure there are a few of my own resolutions from 2001 that I have still not implemented! Such is the reason for this column. I think we all make unobtainable New Year’s resolutions, but at least that gives us something to strive for. The one I hear most often, of course, is “to get our estate plan in order.” We hear our clients say this has been “on their list” for years. So for 2017, why not make it a reality? It is not like you are planning for something that will never happen, right? It may be an uncomfortable fact, but it is still a fact. We are all going to die—sooner or later (hopefully later)! Think about all the events in life for which we insure ourselves—things we hope will never happen like fire, flood, hurricanes, disability, business interruption, etc. Isn’t getting your Last Will and Testament (or Living Trust) in place just as important? Maybe your estate plan is even more so, since it covers something that is going to happen.
Discussing planning options regarding your death or disability may not be pleasant, but it is far better than doing nothing at all. With no legal documents in place, you allow the law of Louisiana to dictate where your assets will go, and sometimes it isn’t what you had in mind at all. You know the old saying, “No one plans to fail, they just fail to plan.” Let’s move “peace of mind” to the top of your list for 2017. Get your estate plan in order. You’ll be glad you did, and you know what? It may not be so bad after all. We take pride in the fact that many clients tell us, “This wasn’t painful at all, why did we wait so long to do this?”

Dr. Feldman journeys to China
Traveling along with the CAFL football league WRITTEN BY HARLEE KAUFFMAN
DR. MICHAEL FELDMAN, North Shore lead physician at Ochsner Health System, recently returned from China after serving as a team physician for the Professional Chinese Indoor Arena Football League’s (CAFL) inaugural season of U.S.-style football. Feldman was one of two physicians who, in collaboration with a team of athletic trainers, were responsible for providing orthopedic and medical coverage to the athletes, coaches and staff while traveling with the league to their different venues. The league was comprised of six teams, representing Beijing, Shanghai, Quingdao, Dalian, Guangzhou and Shenzen. Each team was comprised of 22 players, half Chinese athletes and half American athletes. The historic league is the brainchild of very successful businessman Marty Judge, owner of the Philadelphia Soul of the Arena Football League. Judge teamed up with partners and NFL greats Ron Jaworski and Dick Vermeil to launch this professional sports league. Dr. Feldman is a board certified, fellowship trained orthopedic surgeon with a Certificate
of Added Qualification (CAQ) in Sports Medicine. He has a special interest in arthroscopic and minimally invasive surgery of the hip, knee, shoulder and ankle. While a clinical assistant professor at Brown University, he earned the Dean’s Excellence in Teaching Award twice. Dr. Feldman is currently an associate professor at the University of Queensland/Ochsner Clinical School. Additionally, he is associate editor of Arthroscopy: The Journal of Arthroscopic and Related Surgery. Feldman is a past recipient of
the prestigious Stephen J. Snyder Excellence in Teaching Award from the Arthroscopy Association of North America(AANA), which is given annually to one physician to recognize outstanding teaching that embodies AANA’s mission to promote and foster the professional development and knowledge of arthroscopic surgery. New Beginnings WRITTEN BY LISA RIBBECK LYONS
JANUARY ALWAYS REMINDS
us that an ending brings a new beginning. What a special gift that can be for each of us!! A new beginning means we can change our hair color, redecorate the house, lose some weight or gain some, go back to school—okay, you get the point. It can mean change, no matter how big or small, for anyone willing to participate. Let’s take that gift to the garden and see what we can do with it! Start by taking a nice stroll around the yard. Are you utilizing the space you have to the fullest extent? Having a garden that truly delights all your senses doesn’t just have to do with the living things we place there. Maybe it’s time for a new deck or a bigger patio. Perhaps you acquired some extra cash and now have enough to build that pool or water feature you always wanted. Your space could be extended by simply adding some pavers or a walkway into an underutilized space in the back corner of the yard. Whatever you find, January is an ideal time to get the plans on paper and line up the help to get the job done. Next, look for areas you can add new plants. Did you lose any perennials last year? Maybe some new border plants would help fill in the gaps under bushes that have grown taller. Fences always get a face lift when you add flowering vines to climb on them. Jasmine and 10

climbing roses can be put in right after Mardi Gras. If you have any large sunny spots that never do well in the summer annual garden, think about starting an herb garden there. Look online for pictures and ideas to get that going. Not only will the herbs love the sun, you will love their fresh taste in your summer gourmet salads! Planting a new tree every year is a great way to start a tradition that will help the environment and create family memories. Pines are easy to do in our area but always remember the size the tree can grow into. Maples come in beautiful varieties that stay small and provide the most glorious fall color. All the family can get involved in this project and be happy to watch the little tree grow into maturity. Here on the Northshore, winter is short and sweet. The warm days, when outdoor activities are the most enjoyable, are just weeks away. Don’t delay—make a new beginning in the garden your first project every year. When the outdoors becomes a living place enjoyed by you, your friends and family, that will be a time you happily remember your best new beginning. Happy 2017!! A Fresh Start WRITTEN BY LAURA TOBIN
WITH THE BLANK-SLATE, anything-canhappen promise of the brand-new year, the time is perfect to make marketing resolutions. If you’ve followed last year’s advice, you have a marketing plan in place by now. Consider these resolutions to stay on track all year.
1.
Give your creative approach a makeover. Media placement and other outreach tactics are only as effective as the creative messaging you use. If you’ve been running the same ads for a while, consider a new approach to refresh your look and messaging.
2.
Try something new. It’s easy to get in the habit of doing the same thing marketing-wise year after year. Make 2017 the time to try at least one new marketing tactic.
3.
Measure results regularly. Take the time consistently to assess the effectiveness of marketing tactics. Review web analytics, SERP (search engine results page) ranking reports, retail traffic, calls and online inquiries that result from marketing activities.
4.
Look closely at your website. When was the last time you gave your website a good review? If you’re not monitoring it regularly, chances are it’s outdated. If your site is more than two or three years old, you probably need some technical modifications for optimal performance.
5.
Revisit keywords. Keeping your site metadata current and accurate helps people find you online. It’s as important to visibility as good signage and an attractive storefront.
6. Be sociable. Resolve to develop a social media strategy and post interesting and useful content consistently. It doesn’t all have to be original—reposting related tidbits works fine for filler.
7.
Network. Get out there and mingle with customers and potential referral sources. It helps you keep your finger on the pulse of business, and it’s fun! Hopefully your marketing resolutions last longer than the diet and exercise ones, which are often done for by Mardi Gras. Happy New Year! Start Strong, WRITTEN BY MARIA D’ANTONIO
IT’S THE NEW YEAR, and everyone wants to start off strong. Whether your resolution is to eat healthy or exercise, Star Physical Therapy and Fitness would like to help your strong start stay strong. Matt Slimming, PT, DPT—owner and physical therapist at Star Physical Therapy—and the rest of the staff have dedicated themselves to not only healing patients, but helping them achieve a healthy lifestyle. Starting in January, Star Physical Therapy is launching its STAY STRONG program to encourage the community to become healthier.

Sophisticated Woman | January 2017
“We love to see people who are not sure if exercise is for them,” said Matt. “Those are the people we need to see here.” STAY STRONG is geared toward those who are 35 years or older and who want to start exercising, but aren’t sure how to start. Clients will first meet with a physical therapist to assess their strengths, limitations and goals. The Star team will then formulate an individualized exercise program tailored to the client’s specific needs. Each exercise session consists of a 30-minute workout and a meeting with the physical therapist to ensure that the client stays on track.
health & fitness
.......................................................................... .................................................................................... ................................................. The Star Physical Therapy family also welcomes seniors with a STAY STRONG for Seniors. This program targets seniors’ needs such as fall risk, balance and leg strength, to name a few. The exercise sessions are safe, effective and valuable. “We want them to be healthy, exercise as part of their lifestyle, and stay strong!” said Matt. Both programs are usually covered by insurance and include a free 30-day membership to Star Fitness or one of the affiliated gyms. Also, no doctor referrals are needed for these programs. “I personally think the most exciting part of STAY STRONG are the special challenges we have incorporated into the program,” commented Patient Care Coordinator Sam Delahoussaye. She explained that one of the ways Star Physical Therapy has challenged clients to maintain a consistent routine is by participation in monthlong weight loss competitions. “We utilize challenges not only as a way to motivate our clients, but also as a way to make working out fun and enjoyable.” Star Physical Therapy has many locations for clients’ and patients’ convenience. Northshore locations include Folsom, Covington, Mandeville and Slidell. There are also two locations on the Southshore—one in New Orleans East and the other on the lakefront. Patients may utilize any of the locations. Fully electronic medical recording ensures that patients receive thorough, convenient care. “It helps ensure good quality control across the board,” commented Matt. To maintain the level of excellence expected at all the locations, the staff consistently meets to engage in leadership and clinical training and to review patient surveys that are sent out monthly. Doing so helps every member of the Star Physical Therapy family provide top notch care to all patients and clients. With multiple clinics and a warm, highly skilled staff, Star Physical Therapy wants to help you keep your New Year’s resolution to exercise. Matt encourages everyone: “Let us help you stay strong.” Star Physical Therapy provides care in Covington, Folsom, Mandeville, New Orleans East, New Orleans Lakefront and Slidell, for more information visit starptclinics.com.
We love to see people who are not sure if exercise is for them.

and it is time to commit to a new year of health and wellness. With a sea full of diets to choose from, it can be difficult making the right choice without the right frame of mind. When seriously considering losing weight and becoming healthier, the phrase “it takes a village” sums up where to start. When it comes to weight loss, the hallmarks of success usually involve the words “lifestyle change.” But, what does that really mean? These days a lifestyle change almost seems like a fad because of the way the phrase is thrown around. But without actionable, reasonable goals, a lifestyle change is still just a pipe dream for those unequipped with the right information. So, what’s the best way to start making a lifestyle change? Start at home and at work. Here are some tips on how to start making a lifestyle change that lasts: • Bring a healthy dish, such as homemade zucchini hummus, instead of spinach artichoke dip to a party. • Only offer healthy options, such as cauliflower crust pizza and fruit infused water, for children at birthday parties.
Stirling Properties hosted a Business After Hours at the future site of River Chase Office I, on Brewster Rd.
• Take a healthy cooking class with a family member instead of going out to eat.

“Organic” Spray Tans
meet the owner
.......................................................................................................................................
X Fusion Family Arena WRITTEN BY MARIA D’ANTONIO
“ORGANIC” AND “ALL NATURAL” are all buzz words throughout several industries. The salon industry is no different. However, just because something is labeled as such, does not mean that it really is. Our responsibility as service providers is to learn as much as possible, and to pass this information on to you so that you can make the best decision for your skin. All sunless tanning solutions and sunless products are synthetic and not really “organic” or “natural”. The Salons and spray tan providers should do a better job at educating themselves—and their guests as most people believe them to be. 100% of the active tanning ingredient is a synthetic chemical. The active ingredient is dihydroxyacetone, or “DHA.” Does dihydroxyacetone sound natural? DHA starts off as sugar beets and sugar cane and goes through a chemically altering process that turns them into a white crystalline powder. This powder, when mixed in a liquid base, will dissolve. When the mixture is applied to the skin, a chemical reaction with the skin’s amino acids causes the “tanning” effect. Unfortunately, no one can rub a sugar beet on their skin and get tanned. DHA was approved by the FDA in the 1970s for cosmetic use. DHA has no real side effect, but it can be dehydrating to the skin. Dehydration usually occurs in formulas that have high percentages of DHA, which is why we always recommend moisturizing to maintain your tan longer. Irresponsible manufacturers use the word “organic” to differentiate their products from similar products on the market, primarily as a marketing tactic because most of the industry lacks education on the subject. Salons and spray tan providers should do a better job at educating themselves—and their guests—before adding to the confusion in the industry.
TWO YEARS AGO,
Mindy Yaniga noticed that there was something missing in the community. There weren’t many places where she could take her four children that had a variety of indoor activities that the whole family could enjoy. Thus, the concept for X Fusion was born. Located in Covington, X Fusion Family Arena not only provides fun activities for the whole family, but also an alternative for child care. “We just added the child drop-off,” said Mindy. Available Monday – Friday, the child drop-off program provides a place for busy parents to send their children while they work or finish some errands. With numerous activities such as the rock climbing wall—in addition to homework help—the children are kept active under the supervision of a welltrained staff, making it a unique afterschool program. X Fusion provides a myriad of other services, including camps when school is out of session, PE for homeschoolers and birthday parties. However, it isn’t just about the kids. “Our goal is to have a place for the family to come together inside and have fun,”
Proud to be Part of the Community
commented Mindy. Parents are encouraged to join in the fun with their children. Families can race each other up the rock climbing wall or go headto-head in a game of dodgeball. Mindy’s own family loves the rock climbing wall and the zip line. Adult fitness classes are also offered: Bootcamp Group Training, Aerial Silks, Self Defense and Pole Fitness. Families are encouraged to drop by anytime to see what the fun is all about or come by during the next camp day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day on January 16 or Kid’s Disco Dance Night on January 20. “X Fusion brings fitness fun for the whole family,” Mindy commented. X Fusion Family Arena is located at 1455 N. Collins Blvd. in Covington. For more information, call 985-705-2910 or visit xfusionfitnesscenter.com.

Happy with your hair? HAVE YOU HEARD
the saying “A woman’s hair is her glory”? If not, trust us—a full head of hair can make both men and women feel proud, especially later in life when thick and shiny hair is not as common. What happens to us? Why do color, shimmer and, most frighteningly, fullness leave our hair limp and dull or simply absent? There are many reasons and, fortunately, many solutions. The number of treatment options is multiplying as hair loss therapy becomes increasingly popular.
The most important step is to choose the right treatment for your hair depending on the underlying cause. For starters, hair is an extension of our body (no pun intended) and reflects our overall health and wellness. As we go through life, wear and tear on our bodies contributes to poorer nutrient absorption, slower detoxification, and various imbalances often related to hormonal shifts. We have seen great success with PlateletRich Plasma (PRP) therapy for hair loss or thinning. It typically produces results in 8–10 weeks—one of the fastest treatments on the market—and can replace sticky sprays, gels and foams. A safe, non-surgical treatment performed in the doctor’s office, PRP therapy involves using the patient’s own blood, sometimes with the addition of ACell (FDA-approved treatment aimed at cellular regeneration), which is injected into the scalp. The procedure takes about 90 minutes. The essential proteins contained in the blood stimulate natural hair growth. Patients enjoy increased thickness, fullness, and shine in a matter of weeks. Hair transplantation is getting more sophisticated, and is now used for brows, beards and other areas that have no hair follicles remaining and need to be filled.

.........................................................................
Are You Healthy and Fit? TO BE IN GOOD HEALTH and be in shape, one needs to stay active physically and mentally in addition to daily, proper nutritional intakes. Depending on your age bracket, it is good to know the following: your cholesterol and blood sugar levels, blood pressure readings and weight, immunization status, and family history of illnesses or cancer. Depending on your lifestyle, you may need to be checked for sexually transmitted disease regularly; if you smoke, a regular imaging study may be warranted; regular alcohol and illicit substance consumption may require frequent monitoring for misuse and, thus, need for help; and, if you’re depressed, you may need treatment before it gets worse. Another thing to consider in your endeavor to live longer is to avoid bodily harm from physical trauma such as accidents or assaults by others.
. . . make sure you’re following your health care providers and specialists regularly . . .

For those of you who already have health issues such as diabetes, hypertension and heart disease, make sure you’re following your health care providers and specialists regularly to monitor your status, including frequent blood work tests and having your medications reviewed for any possible drug interactions. All the necessary screenings need to be followed, including bone densitometry to evaluate bone loss; mammograms and pap smears recommended for certain women; and, depression and alcohol screening. For elderly individuals, it is wise to have regular screenings for your driving skills, your visual and auditory acuity, and your memory capability. Your home situation needs to be assessed periodically to see if you have adequate social and financial support. If you have any further questions on these matters, please contact your friendly health care provider for further details.

Ashley Bratton
Enterprising Woman INSPIRATION and DEDICATION WRITTEN BY JILL WILLIE PHOTOS BY STEVE RANDON
MIGRAINES, JOINT PAIN, BACK PAIN…most of us have experienced one, if not all, of these at some point in time. But for 75 million Americans, pain is far more than an inconvenience. It is a debilitating way of life. In fact, chronic or acute pain is the number one cause of disability in this country. For the last six years, physicians at the Advanced Pain Institute have helped patients manage their pain and provide relief—often to the extent that they can return to daily activities and restore their quality of life. As the office has grown to address the needs of patients throughout the Northshore, it has done more than expand to six locations. It has also added nurse practitioners to its staff. Ashley Bratton is one of those additions. The first full-time female nurse practitioner at API, Ashley facilitates care and enhances treatment. Ashley has worked in pain management almost exclusively throughout her career, first as a Nursing Assistant, then as a RN, and now as a NP. “My first experience was in a postoperative setting. I saw the impact I could have on a patient by providing care and relief. The only downside was that I would attend to a patient for such a short time. That’s one of the biggest reasons I pursued the NP program,” she explained. “Being a NP allows me to build relationships with patients, to work with them 22

Chronic pain and depression often go hand in hand. It is important for us to recognize when additional resources are needed. We are most effective when we address the total patient. Medicine is not enough.
over the course of their treatment.” From pre- and post-operative care to assessing the efficacy of medications, Ashley delivers—and enables the physicians to deliver—more personalized care. Nowhere is this more evident than in the area of headache and migraine management. Ashley is specially trained in the use of Botox to help alleviate pain associated with chronic headaches or migraines. Botox treatment consists of a 155unit dose injected into 31 specific sites. Sessions take about 15 minutes and are repeated every three months. “I am passionate about this treatment option for our patients. I see, first-hand, the incredible benefits it provides,” Ashley said. “Between 75% – 80% of our patients experience relief from Botox. The excitement they feel about returning to even the simplest of activities, is the highlight of my job.” Because Ashley performs the Botox procedure independently, it is a more accessible treatment for people who suffer from chronic headaches and migraines. “Patients don’t have to work around the physicians’ busy surgical schedules. Expedited care means expedited relief,” she said. A native of Hammond, Ashley explained that if she doesn’t know a patient before he or she comes in, she will before the appointment is over. “If I don’t know the patient, I will probably know someone in their family, one of their children or grandchildren. I have met several of my neighbors while at work as well. A lot of times, by the end of the visit, it will be as if we’ve known each other for years!” Ashley and her husband, Seth, have two “fur babies,” a Weimaraner named Kyleigh Louise
and a lab named Goose. They were married two years ago—a year filled with many life milestones that included building and moving into a new house, planning a wedding and honeymoon, and both of them changing jobs. The frenetic pace of that year has slowed down, allowing Ashley time to decorate her home and to host friends and family. “Everyone teases me because I keep adding things to the house,” she said. “But I love it. Visiting antique stores in the area is like a treasure hunt for me. I use chalk paint to bring new life to old pieces. The house definitely is a reflection of my personality.” Ashley has settled into her career as well. She credits API for giving her the resources and tools to grow. “I love the autonomy I have here. I have the ability to treat and care for patients the way I choose. Of course, I work closely with the physicians in the practice, but I no longer have to rely on them for every little thing. As a RN, I was limited in how I could provide patient care. I really do believe NPs are the new wave of healthcare in the country.” Explaining that API takes an interventional approach to pain management, she often works in cooperation with other medical disciplines such as physical therapy, occupational therapy and mental health. “Chronic pain and depression often go hand in hand. It is important for us to recognize when additional resources are needed. We are most effective when we address the total patient. Medicine is not enough.” Advanced Pain Institute has partnered with Comprehensive Neurological Solutions for patients with more complex neurological symptoms. “We work as a team to establish the proper diagnosis and treatment plan,” stated Ashley. She continued, “If you don’t want to have surgery, we can help. If you have already had surgery, but are still experiencing pain, we can help. If you don’t have chronic back pain, but severe episodes of intense pain, we can help.
We have a variety of same day procedures that address different pain sources.” Ashley noted that Advanced Pain Institute has a surgical center adjacent to the Hammond office. “Going in for a surgical procedure can be nerve wracking. We can provide a seamless transition for the patient. Our goal is to provide pain management treatments in a comfortable, convenient and personal environment.” Advanced Pain Institute is headquartered at 42131 Veterans Ave. in Hammond with additional locations in Amite, Covington, Denham Springs, Laplace and Slidell. Healthy Children for our Future WRITTEN BY JOY FELDMAN, NC, JD
WE ALL KNOW
the words of Frederick Douglass to be true: “It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men.” Yet, we seem to have lost our way in feeding children nutrient rich food. Ninety percent of the food we purchase today is chemically prepared and processed, devoid of rich minerals and vitamins. Given that our young people have tremendous internal demands on their bodies for growth and development, what we feed them is of paramount importance. Remember, there are major developments occurring in children as they are building a system and laying down structures to create a hundred trillion cell construction project that not only boasts a most impressive design, but also exhibits unsurpassed resiliency and healing capacities. To keep this finely tuned machine in tip top shape, we need to honor
and respect it. Most importantly, we need to recognize that we derive our energy from the foods we consume. Wayne Gretzky, the all-time leading scorer for the NHL, wisely noted that “you miss 100 percent of the shots you don’t take.” Children’s health—and the ability to contribute to our society—is predicated on their well-being. Let’s give it our best shot in 2017. In this new year, let’s join together to create an atmosphere of support where we can overcome health barriers and create wonderful new successes. Joy Feldman is a writer, author and lecturer. She is the author of Joyful Cooking in the Pursuit of Good Health and Is Your Hair Made of Donuts? To find out more information: joyfeldman.com or isyourhairmadeofdonuts.com
So, what can you do in 2017 for your young people? • Feed your family more nutrient rich proteins, vegetables, complex carbohydrates and healthy fats. • Make a small garden and teach your children where healthy food comes from. • Get them involved in the kitchen with you. • Be an excellent role model. • Join forces with friends and take turns weekly cooking a healthy meal.

........................................................................
Bright Lights, Big City WRITTEN BY DR. MARY SPEED
AS WE ENTER the purity and freshness of this new year, I am making business resolutions. Many of us recall the blue tarps and eerie quietness of the weeks following HK (Hurricane Katrina). After the debris of trees and downed power lines were removed and then reinstated, “we knew we were back” when businesses opened. I recall standing in line at Waffle House crying one Saturday morning, partly because I was SO glad the place was open and in frustration too because THE WAFFLE HOUSE HAD NO EGGS! I applaud the businesses that reached out to reinvest in their communities. Truth is, without businesses, we have no communities. Businesses sustain families. Think of the names of our streets and communities themselves— often named after individuals who forged the way to establish businesses. My New Year’s resolutions to businesses are: • I will buy from locally owned businesses. • I will bring my out-of-town visitors to shop at locally owned businesses. • I will buy locally produced water. • I will buy produce from local vendors and artisans. • I will support Chamber of Commerce events. Remember how we felt seeing the lights coming back on in businesses and staying on through the night. Trucks rolled in and out. The general clatter and clamor of what seemed business as usual was, in reality, anything but. Business owners had faith to cleanup, reestablish themselves and open their doors to the community. And, we were SO glad to go through those doors, flooring! textiles! furniture! building materials! If you are an owner of one of the 543,000 new businesses that will open this month, I applaud your courage and wish you the best of the best. (“16 Surprising Statistics About Small Businesses”—Forbes). God bless you in 2017.

JONATHAN & KELLY
FOR TWO MONTHS this summer, the Big Easy became the City of Brotherly Love. Twins Drew and Jonathan Scott, better known as the Property Brothers of HGTV fame, were in the city to rehab a traditional shotgun house in the Treme neighborhood as part of a four-part series entitled, Brothers Take New Orleans. Primarily a design competition between Drew and Jonathan, the show is a true love letter to New Orleans, with the duo paying homage to the city’s rich history and culture.
DREW & SARAH
In an effort to showcase the area’s art and architecture in each design concept, producers selected local designers Sarah James Moss of Moss Manor and Kelly Sutton of Sutton House to pair with Drew and Jonathan on the renovation project. Following a series of interviews, both via Skype and in person, Sarah was partnered with Drew to create his rustic modern retreat while Kelly teamed with Jonathan for a vintage remix design concept. Sophisticated Woman recently caught up with these designing women to talk about their behindthe-scenes experiences with two of the most popular siblings in home improvement and design programming.

Sara: They were very involved in the design and construction of the homes. The time Drew took with the construction details of the project was exceptional. Although he is better known for his real estate experience, he is well versed in construction as well. He identified potential problems and addressed them before they could become bigger problems. As a designer, I appreciated that diligence. What was the biggest challenge working on the show? Kelly: In many ways, the project was similar to other design projects. Working with Jonathan was like working with a client— we’d discuss floor plans, goals and vision and then I’d come back with recommendations on how to bring that vision to life. The biggest challenge was the compressed time frame. Everything was meticulously planned and choreographed. There was no time for delay. Sarah: The timeline was definitely the most difficult part. We ordered most pieces in advance and kept them in a warehouse in Kenner. Once a particular piece was to be installed, there was no time to waste. It was like a freight train. We worked seven days a week, often late into the night putting things in order. Were you tempted to peek at the other’s design for additional inspiration? Kelly: Both Jonathan and Drew had clear visions for what they wanted in their spaces. We stayed true to our design themes, and the result is that we ended up with two very

What was it like meeting the brothers? Kelly: One of the things that struck me is how genuine and down to earth they are. They are just like they appear on camera. They were generous with their time, not just with us and the rest of the crew, but also with their fans. If we were in public and someone asked to take their picture, they were happy to oblige.

distinct homes. That is what makes the show so interesting. Sarah and I have similar design aesthetics, and yet our interpretation for each space was different. Sarah: I tend to do more sleek, urban loft design, so the rustic look was a little bit out of my comfort zone. I was able to draw from Drew’s vision and take pieces from the home and reuse them in new and creative ways. One of my favorite projects was the canopy we made from some of the home’s original wood floors. Does the show portray the renovation process accurately? Kelly: It has been fun watching the different episodes after living through them just a few months ago. Everything has been true to the process. The only thing that was a bit different was the way we looked on filming days. The producers would give us a heads up to be dressed nicely and wear makeup for days we would be on camera. Sometimes the crew wouldn’t even recognize us! We definitely don’t wear heels to a construction site. Sarah: What I loved most, is that the show wasn’t just about the renovations, it was about the love that Drew and Jonathan have for the city. Whenever possible, they used local tradespeople and relied on them for their expertise. They incorporated local works of art; restored architectural features like pocket doors and fireplaces; and interjected a multi-cultural vibe that defines the modern-day neighborhood. They wanted the homes to take on aspects of New Orleans—both in design and in function. Team Drew or Team Jonathan? Kelly: Definitely Team Jonathan. I had a wonderful experience working with him and am proud of what we accomplished. Sarah: I’m on Team Drew all the way. Both Kelly and I said we’d love the opportunity to do it again, but we’d both probably insist on working with the same brothers we worked with for this project.
