associate publisher IT WAS WITH
great sadness that we learned of the passing of our friend and contributor, Salvatore “Paul” Cimino. Paul, as he was known to us, wrote our foodies column for many years, and we enjoyed his interesting stories and delicious recipes. Paul loved sharing his passion for Italian food with our readers. He was a true renaissance man, with a long and distinguished career. Paul was a Korean War veteran who spoke four languages; a professional opera singer who performed with opera companies in New York, Atlanta, and New Orleans; and an actor who performed in many movies, including A Streetcar Named Desire. Throughout his journalism career, Paul wrote about many subjects and interviewed many celebrities. His talents were many: hair and make-up artist to the stars, teacher of languages and culinary arts and community volunteer. Paul volunteered at The St. Tammany Parish Library and Lakeshore Regional Medical Center. He was the first recipient of the Salvatore “Paul” Cimino Award, named in his honor, for exemplary volunteer service to the St. Tammany Parish Library. Paul will be missed greatly by his family, friends and the Sophisticated Woman Magazine staff. In this issue, we introduce you to our Enterprising Woman, Reba Weymouth, who through her own experiences has found ways to help men and women with the anti-aging process. We show you some wonderful jewelry found in our local stores, and get a peek at a chic Covington home. Save the date for our second annual Sophisticated Weddings Show to be held at the Southern Hotel on Sunday the 25th of September. To accompany the show, our Sophisticated Wedding Magazine will be published in August. Have a safe and happy Fourth of July!

WRITTEN BY SARAH HERNDON
THINKING BACK,
not many adults can say that they had figured out what they would be doing for the rest of their lives before they even started middle school. However, for Dr. Crystal Gueldner at the young age of eight, her eyes were opened to the world of optometry–literally. Her elementary school had sent a note home to her mom, referring her to an eye doctor. “I remember putting the glasses on and telling my mom that I could see the outlines of the leaves and the blades of the grass,” she says. From then on, that yearly trip to the eye doctor became a permanent part of Dr. Gueldner’s life and was always a fond memory. After college, still having that fervor, she decided to apply to optometry school. Originally from Palacios, Texas, Dr. Gueldner moved to Louisiana in 2005 to be closer to her mother and to finish her undergraduate degree at Southeastern Louisiana University. She then went on to receive her Doctor of Optometry at the University of the Incarnate Word Rosenberg School of Optometry in 2013. Dr. Gueldner opened Crystal Clear Eyecare just three months ago in downtown Ponchatoula. She offers a variety of services, such as conducting comprehensive eye exams for adults and pediatrics, and prescribing eyeglasses and contacts. She can also diagnose and treat medical conditions concerning the eye.
Crystal Clear Eyecare is a full retail store carrying a wide variety of high quality eyewear and sunwear, including Costa del Mar, Rayban and INVU. They are looking forward to the new addition to the Costa del Mar line, an eyeglass line set to be released in the Fall. Being the first independent optometrist in Ponchatoula, Dr. Gueldner is focused on making her patients’ visits enjoyable. She realizes that affordability is what is on their minds when they walk through her door and yet patients are continuously limited by the constraints of their vision insurance. In an effort to challenge the assumption that you need vision insurance to see an eye doctor, Dr. Gueldner is creating a plan that will accommodate those patients who do not carry vision insurance as well as create another option for those who do. She is excited to offer this as a simple, transparent option to some of the more costly and complicated alternatives. "We are striving to keep your vision as well as your experience crystal clear," she says. Dr. Gueldner strongly believes in treating her patients with integrity, allowing them the appropriate amount of chair time. "I take pride in connecting with my patients. My goal is to spend time with each patient, listen to every symptom and attempt to address every single one of them. When patients leave here, I want them to be happy." she says.

Vitamins: Which to Take?
BARE FEET OR SANDALS with nail fungus don’t go together at all, so at this time of year, patients often ask their dermatologists for a quick fix for their yellow, chalky, thick toenails. There’s just one problem—there is no quick fix. The good news is there are usually relatively easy remedies as long as the patient can be patient. How long does it take? Years ago pig farmers used to put a notch where the fingernail meets the cuticle when their pigs were mated. When the notch had grown out to the end of the nail—three months, three weeks, and three days (the time of a pig’s gestation)—the farmers knew that the piglets would appear! Toenails, which are the most common site for nail fungus, take twice as long to grow. A full course of treatment can take six to eight months, and the gradual success of the treatment can be followed visibly as the nail grows out normally from
NORMAL METABOLISM DEPENDS
the cuticle.
The good news is there are usually relatively easy remedies as long as the patient can be patient. There are three approaches to killing nail fungus. The first and oldest is an internal approach which involves taking a pill until the fungus and its effects are gone. Terbinifine is used most often, and especially when taken in a pulsatile dosage for several days each month, it is safe and effective. The second treatment option is laser, which involves flashing the nail with a light beam that nukes the fungus. And the third approach is topical nail varnish which is largely effective when used daily over a long period. So if you are ready for the beach but your toenails are not, start your treatment now for next summer!

on a small amount of a family of organic compounds called vitamins which, except for Vitamin D, cannot be synthesized by humans. Since vitamins are obtained from our diet, a proper nutritious diet is important for normal human growth and for maintaining good health. A typical Western diet does not provide most of the vitamins one needs, especially for older adults. Pregnancy and heavy alcohol use increase our need for vitamins. Vitamin deficiency states may be recognized by obvious clinical syndromes associated with low blood levels. Certain vitamins are essential for a certain population of people: 1) Folic acid—found in green, leafy vegetables, fruits, grains, nuts and meats; indicated for pregnant women to prevent neural tube defects in infants; folate deficiency may contribute to cancer and heart disease; high folate intake may decrease hypertensive risk; 2) Vitamin D—daily intake should be 800-1000 units/day; deficiency leads to osteoporosis, falls and fractures; 3) Antioxidant vitamins A, C, and E—observational studies showed some benefits in reducing cardiovascular disease and cancer; Vitamin A deficiency affects the eyes and skin; Vitamin C may prevent common colds and also help with wound healing; a high dose of Vitamin E might improve all cause mortality in some studies; no benefit in prevention of cardiovascular disease or dementia; 4) Vitamin B12—found in liver, milk, fish and meat; deficiency may cause neurological disease and megaloblastic anemia. Remember to exercise regularly and sleep well. Overall, a proper nutritious diet that includes meats, vegetables, and fruits in moderation, along with a daily multivitamin, can go a long way to leading a healthy life. Source: Up to Date

business The Search Continues LAST MONTH we looked at optimizing your website so that customers can find you in online searches. But there’s more to visibility than on-site Search Engine Optimization (SEO). This month we’ll look at off-site digital presence management. Perhaps the most important off-site SEO strategy—particularly for location-based businesses—is pushing out your business information to search engines and claiming listings on business directory sites. In addition to the big guns—Google, Yahoo, Bing, White Pages, Facebook, Foursquare, Yelp, MapQuest— there are hundreds of smaller search engines and listing sites that contribute to your visibility. Although they’re not as widely used for conducting searches, your presence there helps with rankings on the top search engines. Google and the others consider links to your site and citations—mention of your business on reputable websites—to determine whether and how high you appear in search results. Consistency is key. In claiming your business listings, it’s critical to use the same information everywhere. That starts with your name. If you’re Susie’s Shoes in one place and Susie’s Sassy Shoes in another, the search engines see that as two separate businesses, and you lose out in rankings. The same goes for address and phone number. Most listings also include a business description, which should contain the same keywords you chose for on-site optimization. Sounds hard? It can be time-consuming to claim listings manually, but it’s doable—at least for the major ones. Fortunately, there are also automated tools and services that can do the heavy lifting for you. We use a platform that automatically pushes our business information to 200+ sites. Through the listing distribution platform, we can include photos and special offers, manage social profiles and monitor online reviews. It automatically suppresses duplicate or incorrect listings to maintain that all-important consistency. Whether you do it yourself or subscribe to a service, managing your online presence is a surefire way to drive traffic to your site. We get it. You’re busy.
We have extended hours. Independence for the Garden WRITTEN BY LISA RIBBECK LYONS
HELLO HEAT! Hello July! Hello Independence!
Covington 70340 Hwy 21 (985) 888-1117 Mon-Fri 9am-9pm Sat & Sun 9am-6pm ............
LakeUrgentCareNorthshore.com
Who really wants to be working in the yard when July’s heat explodes upon us? Not this reluctant gardener—that’s for sure! The solution to this problem is making sure to do preliminary work before the heat sets in. “Yardscaping” is not a good task for July, but planning is possible at any time of the year. Look around the garden right now, and observe the plants that seem to be thriving. What kind of area are those in—dry, moist, sunny, shady, etc.? How much care do these plants require? What areas of the yard need sprucing up? Make a mental note, or do a rough drawing to refer back to in September when the temperatures cool down. Also, keep an eye out for plant sales, and do some inexpensive experimentation. Remember, anything planted now will need lots of water and lots of mulch! Think of planting garden favorites that will take care of themselves in the heat of summer. One great choice to fit this bill is the ever popular daylily. These showy creatures have been used in landscaping for many generations. They come in thousands of varieties that give options for size and color of blooms. They are perfect for sunny garden areas where other bloomers wilt and perish. They flower for weeks at a time and make great border plants as well as ground cover to help with erosive conditions. Once established, they require very
little care and adapt to all kinds of weather and temperature conditions. Because daylilies do die back in the winter, a clipping as winter sets in will be required. Mulching helps keep their soil moist, and it should also be well drained. Daylilies do not like to be in swampy spots. The best time to plant or divide them is early spring, but this also can be done when your variety has finished blooming. Dividing should be done only every three to four years. Daylilies look best when they grow in nice thick clumps! Daylilies grow from a fan-like crown. Their foliage is long, flowing and green. The flowers bloom on the end of a long scape which also comes out of the central crown. Each scape will produce several blooms. The open bloom will only last a day—thus the name daylily! One bloom shuts and another opens. The finished bloom will become a seed pod. These should be removed without going to seed if you want more blooms next year! Keep this wonderful garden favorite in mind when planning or planting your new and improved “yardscape”! Next July, you will be pleased with your explosion of summer color and the independence a true garden perennial can bring to you! Email your gardening questions and comments to Lisa at shakeslyons@aol.com.

legal Special Needs Trusts and Autism WRITTEN BY RONDA M. GABB
SAM AND LAURA were delighted with the birth of their daughter Ella. The proud parents touted photos and began making college fund contributions. However, as time went on, Sam and Laura became concerned about Ella’s delay in developing basic skills. After enduring a gauntlet of testing, a diagnosis was made—Ella was autistic. The diagnosis of autism in children has dramatically increased in recent years. CDC statistics from 2014 show that 1 in 68 U.S. children has an autism spectrum disorder. Autism varies from mildly impaired to severely affected. Some children will see more specialists than others, such as speech and language therapists, occupational therapists and doctors specializing in autism. Many parents have found public resources to be scarce or insufficient. Children who are severely impacted by autism may find themselves struggling with the disorder into adulthood and, thus, unable to live in an independent environment, and requiring assistance with daily tasks. One way to assure a child with autism receives the best care available is to establish a Special Needs Trust (SNT) for the child. A SNT ensures that its beneficiary receives the benefit of assets transferred to the trust, while permitting the beneficiary to retain access to public government resources. A Trustee manages the trust property to make certain it will last for the lifetime of the beneficiary. The Trustee has discretion to make distributions for supplemental expenses that are not covered by government-funded sources, such as Medicaid. Because the child is only a beneficiary, they are not considered the owner of the trust property and will still qualify for resources provided
by the government. For most parents, a SNT is created inside their Will (called a Testamentary Trust) and does not become effective until the parent’s death. In Louisiana, Special Needs Planning is paramount because children with special needs are considered “forced heirs” for inheritance purposes. This means that a parent (and sometimes a grandparent) is “forced” to leave their child an inheritance. If the SNT is not set up properly, leaving your child an inheritance of more than

Taking A Bite WRITTEN BY JAN ROBERT
TAKING A BITE
of the “Big Apple” or 96 hours of Foodies and Friends eating their way through New York City. I bet you thought that when a group of 8 women travel to NYC all they want to do is shop. Wrong! Especially when Foodies and Friends travel together. All we want to do is EAT and shop with maybe a cocktail or two in between or at least an iced coffee and sweet delicacy to help you make it through the afternoon until your next real meal. When I finally decided that I would not commit to standing in line for 36 of the 96 hours that I would spend in NYC to get tickets to see the play Hamilton I was suddenly liberated and finally able to think clearly. Now I could define my priorities, map out my eating plan, and spend my energy and resources wisely looking for the perfect nosh. NYC is such a great city of neighborhoods and ethnic eats. In four days, we attempted to explore as many neighborhoods and ethnic restaurants as physically possible—Korean in Brooklyn, Spanish in the Meat Packing District, Israeli/Middle Eastern in the East Village, Asian in Midtown, Jewish on the Lower East Side(LES) and Italian in the Times Square Theatre District. The stress of trying to pack in more than 3 meals a day was almost unbearable. But we did it, and survived, again. Darnell and Karen inspired me to get an early morning start with Jivamukti yoga at the Jivamukti studio, “Darnell’s mecca,” near Union Square. After a little dhyana (meditation) and 90 minutes of vigorous flowing vinyasa sequences we satisfied our morning appetites with breakfast at News Bar Café. Deep,
rich, locally roasted coffee with an avocado, poached egg, tomato and pesto sandwich on homemade bread for me. Simple, fresh and satisfying. We topped that off with a stroll through the Union Square Green Market. Over 140 regional farmers, fishers and bakers sell their products in this urbanized landscape each week. The sites and scents of a profusion of fresh cut lilacs and peonies, and an abundance of fresh grown organic fruits and vegetables, cheeses, meats, and artisan breads enveloped us. We wandered through the market aimlessly, drunk with pleasure, our senses satiated, while munching on a basket of fresh picked, ripe, juicy strawberries. They were almost as good as Louisiana berries, but not quite. Twenty plus years ago, another foodie friend and native Mandevillean, Cathy Deano, was living in NYC and introduced my friend Carol and me to Carmine’s. It is almost impossible for me to go to NYC without visiting Carmines, a family style, southern Italian restaurant. There I indulge in 2 of my favorite oversized platters: Chicken Scarpariello and Carmine’s Italian salad. Check out the secret recipe that Foodies and Friends were able to find for this earthy, garlicky, crusty, rosemary infused chicken! All of the food at Carmine’s is meant for sharing, foodies style. So cook it up, invite family and friends, and serve with your favorite Italian salad. Easy! The family style servings are so huge (Carmine’s prefers the “wow” factor) that 1 serving of chicken and 1 salad fed 5 hungry ladies. They like to say that they go for the feel of an Italian American wedding feast with their portions. So true!
ΧΩ Walking in Central Park followed by a sublime brunch at Russ and Daughters Café in the LES is another highlight not to be missed. How would I ever have discovered that egg creams do not in fact have eggs, and that the best potato latkes and chopped liver in the world would be located here. Russ and Daughters, the “Queens of Lake Sturgeon,” offers the mainstays of LES Jewish cuisine— pickles, babka, smoked whitefish, lox, caviar, knishes, bagels and more. The beauty of NYC is finding the perfect little hideaway or encountering things by accident. Maybe you will have the good fortune to discover that hard to find “alfajores,” the Argentinian caramel shortbread cookie. There it is, staring you in the face and begging to go home with you. How could one ever resist such sweet temptation? You may never have this opportunity again. We sniffed out many more delicious discoveries with stops in between at the Whitney and the Metropolitan Museum restoring our appetites before the next feast. We did not want to miss David Chang’s, Momofuku Milk Bar for compost cookies and cereal milk ice cream, or Dean and DeLuca for cherry clafouti and anything chocolate. And did we ever find the perfect rugelach? Not yet, so the search will continue, my foodie friends. For our farewell to NYC we spent the last night at the hipster Archer Hotel and Spyglass Rooftop Bar. Overlooking the city, face to face with the iconic Empire State building, we drank a farewell toast to the City we love, even if it never sleeps. Sante! You can find all of our favorite recipes at sophisticatedwoman.com/foodies-friends.

Chicken Scarpariello Ingredients: 4 pounds chicken (about 12 pieces) 3 large lemons 1 tablespoon kosher salt 2 teaspoons fresh rosemary leaves 2 large cloves garlic 2 teaspoons fresh sage ½ teaspoon black pepper 2 teaspoons fresh oregano leaves 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 tablespoons butter splash of white wine 1 cup vegetable oil 1 tablespoon finely chopped shallots salt and pepper to taste Directions: Wash and pat chicken dry. Place chicken pieces into a large bowl to allow for mixing. Chop half the herbs and mix with chicken. Cut two of the lemons in half, squeeze out all juice and throw the squeezed lemons in with the chicken and herbs. Add olive oil, kosher salt, black pepper and mix well. Cover and refrigerate 24-48 hours. Toss chicken 2-3 times throughout the day. Heat oil in sauté pan over medium flame. Remove chicken from marinade and shake off as much of the herbs and liquid as possible. These herbs will burn during cooking. When oil is just smoking, add chicken slowly to pan without overlapping pieces. Turn chicken when brown and crusty, 10-12 minutes. Repeat on other side. While chicken is browning, add marinated garlic cloves until brown and tender. Remove garlic pieces and reserve. Place chicken in warm oven. Discard oil used for browning chicken, toss in one tablespoon of butter and slowly cook the chopped shallots. Add reserved garlic cloves and remaining chopped herbs. Lightly sauté one minute over low heat. Add a splash of white wine and cook 30 seconds over high heat. Add chicken stock and reduce until liquid becomes dark and taste is strong. Over low heat, add remaining butter, lemon juice, salt and pepper to taste. Pour sauce over the chicken.

Reba Weymouth, FNP-C ENTERPRISING WOMAN Living Life, Beautifully WRITTEN BY JILL WILLIE PHOTOS BY STEVE RANDON
A FEW YEARS AGO,
Reba Weymouth was at a crossroads. Although she loved being a nurse practitioner, she wanted more for her patients than to treat their symptoms. And while she loved spending time with her husband, her family and her friends, she often felt lethargic and unmotivated. Reba knew there was more to life, and she seized the opportunity to get it. Now, as the owner of Timeless Rx, Reba is giving men and women throughout the Northshore the opportunity to get more out of their lives as well. Reba transitioned her career into age management medicine, applying her vast experience in infectious disease, cardiology and wound care to help people restore optimum health and longevity. She continued her education and training, becoming a member and diplomat of the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine. Taking what she was learning and putting it into practice in her own life, Reba experienced firsthand, the transformative powers of hormone therapy, nutritional supplements and advanced skin care. In 2012, she opened Timeless Rx under the direction of Dr. John Simon in order to provide an integrated approach to wellness and beauty. “I wanted to help people rediscover passion in their lives. Our hectic, stressful lifestyles are taking a toll on our bodies and our minds. That toll becomes greater as we age. Hormones can become imbalanced, affecting mood, sleep patterns, libido and mental clarity,” Reba explained. “Our mission is to provide prevention and wellness strategies that restore inner health and improve our patients’ quality of life.” Treating both men and women, Reba said Timeless Rx can make a positive impact on the entire family unit. “Often we will see a male patient first. There is such a significant change in his life once we restore his testosterone level, that his wife soon follows suit. She notices all of the benefits of hormone therapy in him and wants the same for herself.” Andropause, the period when testosterone declines in men, is much more gradual than female peri-menopause and menopause, yet many of the overall symptoms are the same. Timeless Rx offers hormonal therapies for andropause that help achieve long-lasting hormonal balance including testosterone injections and bioidentical hormone pellets. HCG injections are also available as a non-steriod alternative to increase natural production of testosterone.
22 Sophisticated Woman | July 2016
Bioidentical hormones are also used to treat peri-menopause and menopause. Reba can customize a special combination of estrogen, testosterone and progesterone specifically for a patient’s needs and administer the hormones via monthly injections or subdermal pellets. “I came to Reba after many misdiagnoses by other doctors,” says Dawn, a patient of Timless Rx. “Thanks to hormone therapy coupled with their knowledge and attention to detail, she and the Timeless team went above and beyond to finally get my mind and body where it needed to be.” Reba explained that while hormone therapy is one of the most effective solutions to restoring balance, there are other options for patients who do not want that type of treatment. “We strive to provide options for our patients based
of fats and bile from the liver and gallbladder. We also consult regularly with a health coach and doctor of naturopathy to help our patients continue along their path to better health through diet and exercise.” Offering services in a spa-like setting, Timeless Rx helps rejuvenate the mind, body and spirit. Reba performs a variety of treatments to restore that youthful glow including dermal fillers, Radiesse®, Botox®, Dysport™ and skin rejuvenation procedures. Meanwhile, Timeless Rx’s resident aesthetician, Samantha Bazile Cochran, LE, takes the time to assess and educate patients on their skin, and to recommend an appropriate skin care regimen for maximum results. Sam performs a variety of treatments including intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy, micro-needling, microdermabrasion, waxing, chemical peels and facials.
“All of us at Timeless Rx are committed to providing an exceptional experience for our patients.” on their goals and expectations. Integrating medicine, hormones, sleep science, weight loss and nutrition programs enables us to design a personalized program for each of our patients.” Feeling and looking better often come hand in hand. “Once people feel better internally, they want to improve their external appearance as well,” Reba said. “Our weight loss programs are designed to maximize health and reduce the risk of certain diseases and conditions. They utilize natural intervention techniques like LipoTropic B12 (LIPO-LEAN), a proprietary amino acid blend that decreases fat deposits and speeds up the metabolism, enhances liver function and increases the flow
She also offers microblading, a relatively new service that mimics the natural stroke of hair in the form of a tattoo for the eyebrows. Timeless Rx recently added massage therapist Lisa-Maree Berube, LMT, to the team, incorporating various modalities and therapeutic techniques to promote healing and wellbeing. “All of us at Timeless Rx are committed to providing an exceptional experience for our patients,” Reba said. “We enjoy what we do, and it shows. You can practically hear them smiling over the phone. I am blessed to work with such wonderful people.”
Reba recognizes how blessed she is in her family life as well. Describing Stephen, her husband of 30 years, as her rock, Reba said he is the yin to her yang. The couple enjoys spending time with their blended family of five children and a growing number of grandchildren. They have also traveled extensively— from the glaciers of Alaska to the beaches of Hawaii and from the jungle of Costa Rica to the serenity of the Mediterranean Sea. In fact, one of the reasons she is so excited about age management medicine is the opportunity it gives them to enjoy their lives together for decades to come. “We have so many adventures ahead of us and I want to be able to embrace every single one,” she said. “And, I want that same joy for my patients.” Timeless Rx is located at 1970 N. Hwy. 190 in Covington. For more information, call 985-893-6073 or visit thetimelessclinic.com and facebook.com/timelessrx. WRITTEN BY JO RIPOLL
JESSICA KNOLL’S DEBUT
novel, Luckiest Girl Alive, follows the story of TifAni “Ani” FaNelli, a woman who seems to be the luckiest girl alive on the surface and yet is not truly happy. She’s gotten everything she ever wanted at Proof #2 Final 28—a position at one of the top women’s magazines in New York, the size zero body and the blue-blood fiancé. However, Ani’s Charles Dowdy biting narration hints at a deeper pain floating below the surface. Told in alternating chapters of flashbacks and present day 2014, Ani recounts how her high school humiliation and dark secret cause her to manipulate her life into an impeccable lie all leading to one point. When the opportunity arises for Ani to participate in a documentary about “the incident,” she leaps at the chance to tell her side of the story. She believes that displaying her success will give her a feeling of vindication and fulfillment, but recounting her past may have entirely different results. To be honest, Ani’s sarcastic and selfdeprecating voice makes her not the most immediately likeable narrator, but like Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl, you feel the need to keep reading until you discover all the secrets of her past that made her the woman she is. Luckiest Girl Alive deals with difficult and horrifying subjects that are very topical in today’s society. Knoll’s style and imagery will have you gaping in shock and disgust at the horrors in Ani’s past and wondering whether Ani will ever be able to truly move forward. The novel is definitely worth the read and deserves its spot on the best-seller list.

one sort or another. How do we keep track of everyone’s name? In the olden, golden days people called each other by their surnames. The elders in my family still call their friends of 50+ years Mr. Jones or Mrs. Smith. That could be the solution; however, surnames are not necessarily a constant—Mrs. Jones (10 years), Mrs. Smith (12 years), Mrs. Rogers (presently). Worse yet are the names I NEVER learned. You know, Sue’s mom. What do I do when Sue is 30 years old and her Mom is standing in front of me, hand extended in greeting? Don’t panic. She probably knows me too, as Katie and/or David’s Mom. I try to redeem the situation by saying things like, “Sue must be enjoying her new job,” hoping, of course, that Sue has not married or become a partner in a firm that has her name in bold letters on the door. All three of those things are not likely to happen at once—just so I can pick up on her name. And if it did happen, it would be a bit odd to call Sue’s mom, Mrs... if she, in fact, still has the same surname. We are not good at admitting we don’t know. Some of us feel ashamed not recalling names. But, I can assure you in 60 years it won’t matter. My aged clients don’t seem to mind not knowing. By then, people seem much more forgiving about forgotten names, or perhaps, we will grow more forgiving of ourselves for our slips in memory. I suggest three ways to recall names. Renew your sight. Before an event, review yearbooks and old photographs to make connections as to who’s who. Revive your hearing. Before an occasion, call people and catch up on news of where who went where. Use Facebook to make connections and help with recollections. Above all, concentrate on what you do recall and don’t panic about what has gotten away from you. Renewing ties in itself will help with reviving memory. Maybe it’s time to reintroduce yourself, not as someone’s child, parent, spouse or employee of… but yourself. Hello, “I’m so glad to see you.”

Mandeville WRITTEN BY MARLAINE PEACHEY PHOTOS BY JERRY COTTRELL
IT WAS RECORDED
as early as 1902 that in all of the state of Louisiana, there was not a more beautiful place than Mandeville. It is a town rich in noble history, environment and resources. Its beauty still abounds. Visitors love to frequent the Mandeville Trailhead, our local hub of activity. Here you will find a cool oasis for the children to splash about, an amphitheater where concerts abound, a local farmer’s market and a museum room complete with films, photos and dioramas recounting Mandeville’s History. It is here that the City’s Cultural Development Department thrives, headed by Alia Casborne, who was appointed by Mayor Villere five years ago. Alia organizes events throughout the year, including: Free Concert Series (Spring and Fall), Easter Eggstravaganza, The Annual Fourth of July Celebration on the Lakefront, Sunset Symphony on the Lake: An Evening with the LPO, Winter on the Water, the Annual Christmas Parade and Boat Parade, and Mandeville OctoberFeast, a 4-day wine, food and art experience. The City has also partnered with the Mandeville A.R.T. Collaborative and the St. Tammany Art Association to offer several art camps and events. Last year was the first year The Pontchartrain Film Festival was held
in the City, having moved from Slidell. The weekend festival was enjoyed thoroughly by all and featured emerging film directors. The focus of these events is to increase community education, visitor and business participation in arts and cultural endeavors within the City. All events are very well attended and enjoyed by residents and visitors in record numbers. Our lakefront, currently in pristine condition, is Mandeville’s shining star. Here you will find valuable tracts of beautiful live oaks, along with gum, magnolia, oak, beech, bay and pine trees, mingling with the salt sea breezes from the lake. It is one of the most peaceful spots in the parish to jog, walk, relax or simply enjoy a breathtaking sunset. Bird watchers enjoy spotting a variety of species, ranging from ruby-throated hummingbirds to soaring bald eagles. The lake also provides a great deal of pleasure for swimmers and boaters of all types of crafts. The Pontchartrain Yacht Club offers regional and national regattas, attracting people from far and wide. This year’s second annual July 4th Celebration on the Lake will begin on Monday, July 4, at 10 A.M. The City, along with Chevron and the Northshore Community Foundation, are sponsoring the event. Food and drink
restrictions on the lakefront are waived for that day. Entertainment by Four Unplugged will begin at 4 P.M. on the stage located between Coffee and Carroll Streets. A festive display of fireworks will close out the evening. Mandeville hosts a wide variety of shopping areas, from major chains to classic boutiques, not to mention award-winning restaurants to please every palate. Because of Mayor Villere’s sincere dedication to maintain the beauty and culture of our City, the quality of life here makes Mandeville a great place to shop, stay, dine and play.

As service providers, we run our businesses by appointments. We pay our staff based on the appointments on our books. Businesses set aside a certain amount of time for services, so that we are able to provide the best service we possibly can. We hold that time for our scheduled guests, so that no one else is able to take it. On the rare occasion a scheduled appointment does not show up, or cancels “last minute,” not only are we not able to work with that guest, we are not able to work with a guest who could actually make the appointment time, and we still need to pay our bills. GET BACK ON TRACK THIS SUMMER
WRITTEN BY JOY FELDMAN, NC JD
“SCHOOL’S OUT
For The Summer!” These long, sun-drenched days allow kids to have more time outside and a lot of time for eating healthy, right? I know what you’re thinking— not exactly. According to a 2015 YMCA Family Health Snapshot Survey, kids’ eating habits decline during the warm summer months. Lack of a routine, summertime barbecues, family gatherings and travel can put healthy diets on the back burner. Here are five summertime tips for healthy eating: 1. Get a plan in place. Work together as a family to create a blueprint for a summer vacation that is filled with foods high in vitamins and minerals. 2. Have kids join you in the kitchen. Pull out those cookbooks, and plan your healthy menus together. 3. BLECH, YUCK, NO! Can you guess what I am about to suggest? Eat leafy greens and veggies. Yup! Some of you might get that reaction from your children who can be a bit persnickety about certain foods. Don’t panic. Try kale pops that take less than 10 minutes to prepare. All you need is 1 cup of packed kale leaves, 1 ½ cups chopped pineapple, 1 small banana and 1 cup of coconut water. Combine all ingredients in a food processor. Pour mixture into ice pop molds and freeze for 6 hours. 4. Try grilling fruits such as peaches, nectarines and watermelons. They are yummy! Do you know that when you grill fruit it causes the sugars to caramelize and melt in your mouth? For the perfect flavor, always brush whatever fruit you are grilling with some olive oil first. Set your fruit over indirect heat, and watch closely as it cooks quickly. 5. Plant an herb garden, and use those herbs to season your dishes. Here’s to your health!

Jarvis–Bolyard Wedding ON APRIL 6, 2013 at half past six in the evening, Stephanie Jamie Jarvis married David Neil Bolyard, Junior. Stephanie is the daughter of Tom and Bridget Jarvis of Mandeville and David is the son of David Bolyard, Julie Beth Bolyard, Pat Ross and Bill Ross. The ceremony took place on the dock of the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Maritime Museum and was performed by the Reverend Gene Finnell of Munhullen United Methodist Church, a lifelong friend of both families. As guests arrived, they were offered a celebratory cocktail of “Ponchatoula Strawberry Sangria” while they waited for the ceremony to begin. The groom and groomsmen arrived by boat dressed in khaki suits with handmade fishing flies as boutonnieres. The
bridesmaids wore navy blue dupioni silk dresses in different styles. Stephanie’s stunning wedding gown was an ivory mermaid style dress, also of dupioni silk designed by Lea Anne Belter. The bride and bridesmaids’ dresses all came from Olivier Couture. After the ceremony, the guests and bridal party settled into the reception on the patio in front of the museum. They enjoyed food catered by The Lakehouse, Chef Stefani Sollberger and music provided by the band, At Fault. The entire event was styled by the Girls in Black with flowers by Kim Starr Wise. At the end of the reception, the bride and groom departed by boat amid an aisle of lit sparklers and fireworks over the Tchefuncta River.

This is one my favorite remodels because of the sharp contrast between where we started and where we finished. The home was built in the 40's and had the original kitchen. My client wanted clean lines, efficiency and easy maintenance with as much storage as possible. We created visual height and additional storage by extending the custom cabinets to the ceiling. The island includes a wine fridge and recycling bin. When you are ready to update your decor or renovate your home, I would love to speak with you about your project. I provide a free initial consultation. To learn more about me visit my website or like my Facebook page (JeanetteTurkDDI), which has fresh content added daily. AT A GLANCE, you may think you’re standing in a sleek apartment in New York City or a modern mansion in Beverly Hills. However, the home of Stephanie and Matt Weeks sits on ten acres of land between the city limits of Covington and Folsom. Approaching the house from a country road surrounded by live oak trees and horse farms, an expanse of freshly mowed green lawn is accented with a pristine pond and a lengthy driveway flanked by Bradford Calvary Pear trees.

A new construction home designed by Ralph Mollo and built by Hurley Homes may seem better suited in a neighborhood like The Sanctuary or Tchefuncta Country Club, but the Weeks prefer the privacy and space that their country home offers. In fact, Stephanie knew exactly what she wanted in her dream home before they ever began construction. As a mortgage lender, she sees her fair share of homes and formed an idea of her dream home after their first four houses. Yes, four. They joke that it took five times to get it right, but this time they wouldn’t change a single thing. Entering from the large wrought-iron doors brings you into a great open room facing the kitchen. The living area, anchored with wide hickory planks, extends to the left and right and feels sleek and modern yet comfortable. “Each piece of furniture was given a lot of thought,” Stephanie says. “After five houses you really learn what works and what doesn’t work.” To the right, a modern semi-circular leather couch faces built-in bookshelves. To the left, a slate-tiled fireplace creates a focal point on an exposed brick wall and a baby grand piano adds some drama to the space. Stephanie designed many of the furniture pieces herself, including the sleek glass coffee table and upholstered chair. She appreciates pieces that are unique with clean lines, like the home itself. Stephanie even helped create the custom color of her deep brown kitchen cabinets. The quartz countertops were chosen because they were the largest single piece of stone available. The large brick-front island ties in to the exposed brick on the left wall, creating an interesting and cohesive space. Stephanie originally received some pushback on her idea for the open concept home. “No one thought that the kitchen should be the first thing you see in the home,” Stephanie explained. “They would say, ‘You don’t want people to see dirty dishes in the sink,’” she laughed. If they had known anything about Stephanie, they would have known that there absolutely will never be clean or dirty dishes in her sink. Part of the allure of their home is that despite having one teenage daughter and two dachshunds, it is somehow always spotless. The outdoor space, in keeping with the “clean straight lines” aesthetic, includes a large rectangular pool and outdoor entertaining area, perfect for these hot summer days. You can see the pool from different angles in the house and it sinks right into the surrounding landscape. The Weeks’ modern oasis was carefully designed in detail and they absolutely love it more each day.
