LOSING MY DAD in 2004 was really hard. When you have the kind of Dad I did— strong, protective, morally grounded and self-assured, you think he will be around forever. (Even after you’re grown up.) This is the man who taught me to fish, ride a bike, use tools and negotiate with car salesmen. This is also the man who set such a beautiful example of humility and kindness mixed with toughness and strength. Thankfully, when you have that kind of father, even after he is gone he remains with you in so many ways. There is nothing like evenings at my house now when my kids’ “Daddy” walks through the door. I hope they realize that every time their Dad takes the time to teach them to ride a bike, play “all-time quarterback,” take them camping or read them a bedtime story, he is building in them what my father built in me—the innate sense that they are the apples of his eye, he will do anything for them and he loves them no matter what. I am so thankful for him. June is the month we say thanks to the Dads we know who impact our lives or who are amazing fathers to our children. Flip through our pages to find some great ways to do that. Maybe you‘ll use the savory marinade recipe to prepare a sumptuous barbecue. If you are still shopping for the perfect gift, check out the gift guide for some savvy solutions. Make sure you check out our photo contest winner and the other entries on the web at www.sophisticatedwomanmagazine.com. Have a great Father’s Day and welcome to summer.

About one third of patients with bruxism may also have a sleep disordered breathing condition. There is a bruxism triad consisting of sleep bruxism, sleep disturbances and sleep associated GERD. The pH of the saliva becomes very acidic thus dissolving the tooth’s protective enamel. It has been noted that patients with airway and GERD issues have more wear on their occlusal guard or splints. As the pH in the esophagus becomes more acidic, the number of bruxism episodes increase. With the epidemic of tooth wear in our society it is recommended that patients have a bite or occlusal analysis by age 40. It is apparent that the complexity of tooth wear is growing and early detection may prevent not only tooth wear but other health related issues.

Real Men Prefer Day Spas GIVE HIM WHAT he really wants this Father’s Day; a day spa gift certificate. Many men prefer day spas for personal services like grooming sessions (ears, nose, and unibrow hair removal). Barbers and hair stylists might trim the eyebrows but they might neglect the areas that make men self conscious about their appearance. This is the time of year when many men prefer to have unwanted hair from their backs removed. With boating and water sports they want to look their best. Shaving can cause clients to suffer from razor burn, bumps and ingrown hairs. Body sugaring is the best alternative for those with sensitive skin. The allnatural sugar paste removes hair from the root, and keeps skin from becoming irritated. This inhibits hair growth, so the hair returns finer, lighter, more sparsely and eventually not at all. It is a gentler alternative to laser, electrolysis and waxing. In the movie “The 40 Year Old Virgin” the actor who was waxed shared with a late night TV host that his screams of pain during that session were real. He had no idea how much waxing hurt until that day. Many of our clients usually schedule a massage for themselves after having a sugaring session. This is a great way to ease inner muscle stress from everyday aches and pains while also addressing outward appearance.

Cooking for Dad on Father’s Day
Account Exec
WRITTEN BY ERIC WALLACE
Proof #1
JUNE IS TRADITIONALLY the month of weddings but there is one more important day of celebration as well. In June we celebrate Father’s Day. I for one, love June for this very reason. Life is tricky, well, sometimes just downright hateful. But I know no matter what my Dad is the one rock solid in my life; he never ever disappoints. So as we step into June, let’s remember Dad and all those who have played an important role in our lives. I remember when I was a kid how much I wanted to help my father do things around the house. Now let me stop here and fill you in on one bit of Wallace trivia; I have several left feet, not one, not two but several. Clumsy (and still very hilariously so) does not even begin to describe me. Seriously. But clumsy in the kitchen I am not. So instead of trying to do something which will only give people more fodder for cocktail party conversation, I do something for my Dad I do best—cook. This marinade has been in my father’s
recipe file for many many years. It is easy, low key and yields great results. I use this for less expensive cuts of meat as well as more expensive ones. I have to say my favorite way to use this is for flank steak. Easy Marinade Ingredients: 1 1/2 cup soy sauce 3/4 cup salad oil 1/2 cup wine vinegar 1/3 cup lemon juice 1 T coarse black pepper 3 T honey or cane syrup 2 t dry mustard 2 t parsley flakes 1 t garlic powder Mix well and marinate your choice of meats overnight. Grill or broil meat until done. This is easy, simple, and most of the ingredients you already have on hand. Happy Father’s Day to you all.
So as we step into June, let’s remember Dad and all those who have played an important role in our lives. Pelican Landing Shopping Center 70457 Highway 21, Suite 104

The Turtle and Tires
Before you begin working in the yard, warm up with light movement or a brisk walk to loosen your muscles. Make sure to vary your activities often and take regular breaks. Try to avoid bending over repeatedly, instead try kneeling and alternate your stance as often as possible to keep the muscles and body balanced. When you do stand up from sitting or a kneeling position, rise by straightening your legs at the knees not by lifting your torso at the waist. The type of tools you use is also extremely important. A longer handle gives you more leverage, so use long-handled tools to avoid having to bend over while raking, digging or mowing. When doing prolonged activities like raking or hoeing, make sure to switch hands frequently. Repetitive motion on one side may lead to postural misalignments and pain in the neck, shoulders and back. If you still experience some type of discomfort while working in the yard after practicing these healthy gardening tips, you might want to hire a gardener.

His neck and legs so extended, I could see the pale, thin parts of his skin. I stopped the car to let him cross and watched him “running,” pressing forward, his paws scarcely plodding the pavement. He seemed to be aware of the huge risk he was taking. I didn’t know if he was returning home or on some other important journey. He made it all the way to the other side. I left him, feeling better about myself and the others who’d stopped their cars too and let him pass. Our silent witness and protecting the turtle from disaster earned none of us an award, no trip to Disney in Orlando, certificate nor trophy. But we knew. One of the certain joys I recounted later in the day before I fell asleep was my vision of the little turtle, the hugeness of the automobiles and unknown others whose goodness ensured his safety. I recalled then a passage I’d heard Adam Tabor read aloud from a book about turtles that he’d received as a gift for making his Bar Mitzvah. Dr. Ronald A. Madere, Orthodontics Patient-Centered Care a Hallmark of Practice WRITTEN BY JILL WILLIE PHOTO BY JULIE O’DAY
tried to go “green” whenever and wherever possible. “In particular, the digital radiographs expose my patients to less radiation and we get a much clearer and sharper x-ray image as an added benefit,” Dr. Madere said. The staff, all of whom have been with Dr. Madere for at least eight years, have embraced the new technology and its benefits. “It allows all of us to provide more efficient care on a daily basis, giving us more time to devote to our patients,” he said. Services offered include orthodontics for children and adults, miniature steel braces (which are about 30 percent smaller than traditional braces and easier to keep clean), cosmetic tooth-colored braces, clear aligner treatments (clear, removable trays that move the teeth slightly towards their final aligned destination), surgical orthodontics (for severe cases), child habit control (thumb/ finger sucking, tongue thrust), multi-colored/themed retainers, overbite correction without headgear, TMJ therapy and post orthodontic treatment teeth bleaching, among others. Ronald A. Madere, DDS, APC is located at 4010 Lonesome Road in Mandeville. Call (985) 626-0160 for information or to set up an appointment.
“…our goal was to use technology as an adjunct to improve patient care and communication, not as a substitute for personalized treatment.”
Sophisticated Woman | June 2010
PRACTICING IN MANDEVILLE since 1986, Dr. Madere has seen both the Northshore and his orthodontic practice experience steady growth. When faced with moving into a new, larger building, he took the opportunity to also incorporate technological updates. While the look of the new office (which opened in December 2009) is different, the personalized service upon which the practice was founded remains the same. “The real trick to incorporating new technology was to not lose sight of the fact that personalized care is my practice niche,” Dr. Madere said. “For instance, our patients did not want a computerized check-in system. They still wanted a cheerful receptionist to greet them when they entered the office. Therefore, our goal was to use technology as an adjunct to improve patient care and communication, not as a substitute for personalized treatment.” Because Dr. Madere’s practice is not a high volume clinic, he and his staff are able to spend time with their patients at a more relaxed pace and in a more relaxed setting. The setting is even more relaxing at the new office. Wide screen satellite TVs in both the reception and treatment areas help patients and parents pass the time. From simple changes like using energy efficient foam insulation to more complex acquisitions like the new digital radiographs (x-rays) that don’t require a dark room with strong chemicals, the office has

Robert Hancock, DVM, MS, DACVS of South Paws Veterinary Surgical Specialists Expanding Animal Care into the Specialty Surgical Arena

“Surgery is often a way to ease that suffering— whether it’s to repair a fractured bone after being hit by a car or treat a common joint problem like hip dysplasia with a total hip replacement.”
ROBERT “BOB” HANCOCK, DVM, MS and his wife Jen, a registered veterinary technician, have been working together for the last 12 years, so it is no surprise to discover that they often take their work home with them. However, since they opened South Paws Veterinary Surgical Specialists in April, 2010, taking work home has an entirely new meaning. The couple recently took a recovering dog home for the night so they would be able to personally oversee his post-op treatment. This is just one example of how Dr. Bob and South Paws go the extra mile in providing quality care and superior customer service. “When we opened our doors, we wanted to give our clients a different experience from a traditional doctor/patient relationship,” Dr. Bob said. “We want people to feel as though they are visiting someone’s home rather than coming into a cold, sterile surgery center.” From the gourmet coffee bar and assortment of snacks and sodas to the New Orleans-inspired artwork and luxury restroom, South Paws has a warm atmosphere that helps calm people who are waiting for their pets to undergo surgery. As beautiful as it is, the peaceful environment that South Paws exudes is a secondary reason that veterinarians throughout the Gulf Coast are referring their cases to the surgical center. With more than 10 years’ experience as a veterinarian and five years experience as a board certified surgeon, Dr. Bob’s surgical expertise is complemented by his attention to detail and the teamwork approach he takes in working with referring vets. “We make sure our vets are apprised throughout every stage of the animal’s progress. There is probably nothing more frustrating for them than to have a client call with a question and to not know everything that happened with the surgery,” he said. Letters are sent via email or fax to the referring vet when an animal is admitted for pre-op, after surgery is completed and after every follow up appointment. Dr. Bob also personally calls the veterinarians after every procedure. While this is a labor intensive process, Dr. Bob feels it is definitely worth his time because it builds on the team approach he takes toward animal care. Dr. Bob said he is getting positive feedback from referring vets, not only regarding the interaction he has with them, but also the interactions he has with the animal owners themselves. “Our clients pick up on the fact that our entire staff treats the animals as if they were our own pets.”
Dr. Bob and Jen, along with their three and a half year old daughter Madison, are pet owners themselves. Rudy is a mixed breed and Nikita is a German shepherd. They recently lost their beloved Molly—a golden retriever—that Dr. Bob has had since vet school. He said that his own loss has given him an additional sense of compassion and understanding when it comes to dealing with injured or sick pets. “Pets are very real parts of people’s families. No one wants to see their pets suffer,” he said. “Surgery is often a way to ease that suffering—whether it’s to repair a fractured bone after being hit by a car or treat a common joint problem like hip dysplasia with a total hip replacement.” South Paws also does cruciate repair, spinal surgery and numerous other soft tissue surgeries. Dr. Bob said that he does not want the cost associated with surgery to be the deciding factor in determining animal care. Therefore, South Paws has established partnerships with a few banks in order to offer 12-month, zero percent financing for surgical procedures. He is also a proponent of health insurance for pets, especially for crisis and emergency situations. “Having to pay for veterinary treatment and surgery is akin to having your car break down in that it is an unexpected expense. But in the case of a pet, most people do not want to trade it in for a newer model,” he said. “Financing and insurance prevent me from having to turn away someone for financial reasons.” “It is important for people to know that they have options regarding their animal’s care,” he continued. “There are no safeguards to prevent injury or illness. But there are specialists out there who have undergone rigorous education and training to perform procedures general veterinarians may not be comfortable with or trained to do. We work in partnership with these vets to provide the highest in quality care.” South Paws is located at 2631 N Causeway Blvd. in Mandeville. Call (985) 809-1590 or log on to www.SouthPawsVetSpecialists.com for more information.

In order to become an ACVS board certified surgeon, veterinarians must complete an additional three year residency program, meet specific training and caseload requirements and perform and publish an investigational study. ACVS board-certified veterinary surgeons are credentialed as ACVS Diplomates. THE EYES ARE THE WINDOWS to the soul but the retina is the window to what is going on inside the body. Dr. Neil F. Notaroberto, medical director of “EyeCare 20/20,” built his ophthalmologic practice exploring every nuance of that window to find answers. Dr. Neil says nearly 70% of all diseases are detected through careful examination of the retina. That’s why he uses instruments like the high powered retinal scanner he likes to call his “living microscope”—the only one of its kind on the Northshore. This device produces a detailed view of the anatomy of the eye. The high-speed retinal angiogram camera allows the doctor to perform an ocular angiogram, complete with contrast dye, to determine the physiology of the retina. Finally, he uses the macular assessment and integrity analyzer (MAIA) to determine retinal functionality. With this data he assesses not only a patient’s vision but also the state of their overall health. If the veins behind the eye seem narrowed, for example, it may be a signal of high blood pressure. Often times,
ocular issues are caught at an early stage because of these tests, and instead of a catastrophic outcome like permanent injury to the eye, a viable treatment is implemented in plenty of time. He can then track the progress of a prescribed treatment and make adjustments if necessary. “With this technology, we can take digital measurements of the artery to prove or disprove efficacy of medicine,” he says. “The retina is a literal neurological and vascular window.” His extensive medical background including medical school at George Washington University, an internship in primary care medicine at Yale University, retinal disease surgical training at the University of Tennessee, his ophthalmology residency at Tulane University, and a medical informatics fellowship at the GWU Medical Center coupled with his undergraduate work in computer science, make for a combination of medicine and techno-savvy that puts Dr. Neil’s practice on the cutting edge in his field.

Sophisticated Woman | June 2010
EARLY IN HIS CAREER as an attorney, Todd Reeves decided that while he wanted to devote time to his law career, he also wanted to see his two young daughters grow up. That is how the Reeves Law Firm and the All American Title Agency in Madisonville came to fruition. Todd and his wife of nine years, Lee, handle cases in oil, gas and mineral rights, real estate law, personal injury and estate planning/successions. They also conduct both residential and commercial real estate closings and transfers. Todd feels that honesty with clients is paramount. He personally evaluates every case that comes his way to ensure it is worth your time and money, does an in-depth cost/benefit analysis, and plans the best course of action for the most beneficial result. “When we meet a prospective client, we will evaluate each case, advise individuals of their rights and determine the validity of each claim.” Referrals are not unusual if Todd feels that another attorney with more experience in a certain area would better serve his client. With locations of All American Title Agency both in-house in the Madisonville law firm and in Slidell, Todd, Lee and their title partners, Michelle Blanchard, Jake Airey and Denise Lindsey (of counsel) are readily available to serve the Northshore area. The flexibility of and accessibility to lawyers at the Reeves Law Firm and All American Title Agency is something in which Todd takes great pride. “If a client needs to reach me, our wonderful staff works very hard to keep everyone in the loop. If a client has trouble coming to me, I will be glad to go to them,” Todd says. “I understand that people may have problems that come up, especially when they are seeking legal counsel.” Todd credits the success of his business to answered prayers, hard work and a dedicated support staff like no other. His paralegal and secretarial staff have roughly 30 years of combined experience. Todd alone has practiced for nearly a decade. When he is not immersed in his practice, Todd is very involved in his family life, his church and in the Northshore community. As the vice president on the executive board of STARC (St. Tammany Association of Retarded Citizens), the Northshore non-profit that helps disabled people “see the ability that lies behind the disability,” he feels it is important to give back. Bobby Truitt of Truitt Law Firm Large Scale Representation with a Small Town Feel
Sophisticated Woman | June 2010
WRITTEN BY JAMIE LOBER PHOTO BY TOM BALLANTINE

BOBBY TRUITT of the Truitt Law Firm in Covington says his firm is accustomed to large scale work but maintains a small town feel. “Even though we represent major national corporations and insurance companies, we are small enough that we can be nimble, react and provide the kind of customer service that you are not going to get at a big downtown law firm. We can be a lot more flexible in responding to a client’s needs,” says Bobby. With over two decades of experience, Bobby has represented Fortune 500 companies, local mom and pop operations, domestic and business litigation cases and personal injury claims. Bobby says that as a child he had a misimpression of what being a lawyer was all about. “I hoped to travel the country or world but my travels have been limited to all corners of Louisiana and have been just as fulfilling.” Bobby wants you to know that he will take a case into court if necessary. “We are very aggressive and do not settle on the steps of the courthouse,” says Bobby. “My parents instilled in me to be honest and up front with people and to do the right thing.” Being candid and forthright are qualities Bobby values in his three female attorneys and paralegals that he refers to as family.
Outside of work, you can find him spending time with his family or playing golf. He also enjoys recapping his victories. “I recently represented a gentleman who was forced out of a business that he started and had some criminal charges trumped up against him. We were successful in procuring a substantial settlement for him with his former associates and having the criminal charges dismissed,” he says. No matter what your legal situation, child custody disputes, failed business deals even criminal charges, count on Bobby to help. “It is important for people to gather as much documentation as they can in support of their claim or defense so we can give a more informed opinion at the outset,” says Bobby. Just as you have a dentist and a primary care physician, Bobby feels you should have an attorney. “A lot of people, mindlessly sign agreements or contracts. SCULPT PERSONAL TRAINING Studio blends contemporary style with plush amenities to provide discerning guests an unparalleled experience not achieved by traditional health clubs. The signature series of technically advanced exercise equipment coupled with the guidance of elite personal trainer, Clay Britton, provides a fitness experience like no other. Sculpt specializes in private one-on-one, partner or small group trainings not typically found in a big club or gym atmosphere. Small groups consist of up to six members. Onehour sessions include warm ups and cool downs. Clay offers flexible weekday, evening and weekend trainings. Clay Britton became interested in weight training when he was in the US Air Force Special Operations. When charged with training recruits for special operations assignments, Clay recognized that through the rigors of his training program, he was actually “building a machine.” That is what drove him to fitness. Clay acquired his personal training certification from the National Academy of Sports Medicine and the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America where he was also certified in TRX® Suspension Training®. TRX® Suspension Training® is a revolutionary method of leveraged bodyweight exercise. Safely performed, hundreds of exercises are used to build power, strength, flexibility, balance, mobility and prevent injuries, each personalized to a client’s own specified level of intensity. This unique type of training is conducive to private one-on-one or small group sessions where the focus is on a client’s unique needs and goals and not on the distractions of a large gym or health club. Training with TRX® targets every fitness level, from professional athletes seeking peak performance to everyday workouts for feeling and look your best. Superbowl Champion Drew Brees and UFC fighter Brandon Vera train with TRX® Suspension Training® and it is fast becoming the functional training system for units of the Armed Forces. Sculpt Personal Training Studio has a nutritionist on hand to provide consultations for clients’ dietary habits and to create a plan for life changing routines at home, work and at the fitness studio. Located on Front Street in Slidell, Sculpt Personal Training Studio is the only facility of its kind with unique, state-of-the-art equipment. Renaissance Man Chip Wagar—Chopin, Wagar, Richard & Kutcher, L.L.P
Sophisticated Woman | June 2010
WRITTEN BY AMY BOUTON PHOTOGRAPHY BY STEVE RANDON

WHEN ATTORNEY Chip Wagar’s kids were little, they often heard him say, “If it were easy, everyone would do it.” Well, not everyone can graduate Cum Laude from Tulane Law School, have a thriving timetested career, raise two children, start a law firm from scratch and pen a novel. Chip Wagar has managed to do all of that. Chip grew up in Glen Falls, New York and found his way to New Orleans back in the mid ‘70s when he chose to complete his education at Tulane Law School. What he thought would be a three-year stop-over turned out to be the beginning of the rest of his life. He fell in love with the city, and settled in. He put down roots in Mandeville almost 25 years ago and soon became entrenched in the community. As a founding board member of the Mandeville Soccer Club back in the early 1990s he served as Vice President, then President. He organized and was the first tournament director of the “Midnight Madness” Halloween Invitational Soccer Tournament, now in its 16th year and one of the state’s largest for Division 1 teams.
Today, Chip is the managing partner at Chopin, Wagar, Richard & Kutcher LLP, the firm he started with his partners nearly 15 years ago. Located just at the foot of the Causeway at Two Lakeway Center in Metairie, the firm now has some 15 lawyers, over 40 employees, and offers a wide array of legal services to clients here, nationwide and internationally. Chip’s main focus these days is medical malpractice. Several years ago, a friend asked him to handle a claim for his wife who had sustained a terrible injury during surgery and Chip agreed. It was through this case that he discovered he could be instrumental in offering victims of medical malpractice advice or representation after such a devastating event. He discovered something else during this case; he really liked the field. “Medical malpractice claims are not about punishing the doctor or hospital for a mistake but rather, to compensate someone who is a victim of a deviation from the accepted standard of care,” says Chip. “Think of the victim.” In nearly
His experience and understanding of Louisiana’s medical malpractice law are matched by his passion for the work.
When he is not practicing law, Chip loves to write. He is now in the publishing phase of his first historical fiction novel. He is also a self-proclaimed “closet gardener” with an affinity for the outdoors and the scenic splendor of the Northshore. He spends many hours cultivating nature’s beauty in his home garden. Chip Wagar has always believed that if you love something, you will probably be good at it. He attributes his successful protracted career to his love of the law. Five years from now he still sees himself practicing law, maybe writing his second novel, traveling and still adhering to the best advice he ever received. “That advice was from my father,” he says “never stop learning.” Chopin, Wagar, Richard & Kutcher, L.L.P is located at 3850 North Causeway Blvd., Two Lakeway Center, Suite 900, Metairie, Louisiana, 504830-3838 or 866-586-2057. 80 percent of cases malpractice victims do not even file a claim, but rather suffer in silence. Chip’s advice to anyone who feels they might have a case—seek legal counsel; the earlier the better. When a person files a malpractice claim, a medical review board must review it before a suit is filed. This board consists of three doctors. (Both the plaintiff and the defense attorneys choose a doctor to sit on the three member board and they work together to choose the third doctor). They review the case and a lawsuit may only be filed after their assessment. Chip’s staff saves clients time and money because they use their own medical professionals to determine the validity of each claim before they even approach the medical review board. Not every bad result is due to malpractice. Chip also believes doctors and hospitals should not have to defend meritless claims. “We do this as part of our consultation when we take a case at no cost to the client. Sometimes, after we confer with our medical experts, we tell a client that they do not have a valid claim but even in those cases, they leave with a sense of closure.” Chip adds, if you or a loved one has suffered a serious or permanent injury or death you believe was due to a medical mistake, get professional advice as soon as possible. Generally speaking, claimants have one year from the time of the injury to file. Chip is a seasoned attorney with over 100 civil courtroom cases under his belt and countless other cases he has steered through the state and federal courts. His experience and understanding of Louisiana’s medical malpractice law are matched by his passion for the work. “Medical malpractice is really challenging but satisfying work. I get the chance to take the medical facts and put them in a legal framework. It has really rekindled my enthusiasm for practicing law.” Chip has shared that enthusiasm for practicing law since 1993 as a faculty member of the National Institute of Trial Advocacy, the premier institution for teaching young lawyers how to be a trial lawyers and advocates. He has garnered many accolades over the years including the Marquis award for “Who’s Who in American Law” and as one of City Business’ “Leaders in Law” in New Orleans in 2008.

The Magic Age of Seven WHEN MOST PEOPLE think of orthodontics they think of teenagers. While most treatment begins between the ages of nine and fourteen, most children have a mix of permanent and baby teeth by the age of seven. Orthodontists are trained to notice subtle problems with jaw growth and erupting teeth while children are in this stage of mixed dentition. That is important, because these subtle problems can develop into more profound issues if left untreated. Because of this, the American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children have an orthodontic evaluation no later than seven years of age. While your child’s teeth may appear to be well aligned, there may exist one of those subtle problems that an orthodontist can detect. Most likely, the examination will reveal that your child’s bite is fine, and that no treatment is recommended at that time.

with jaw growth… Even if an orthodontic problem is detected, immediate treatment may not be necessary or warranted. Most likely the orthodontist will take a “wait-and-see” approach, and reexamine your child at regular intervals (usually every six months). This approach allows the orthodontist to monitor the development of the permanent teeth and jaws, and begin treatment at the most appropriate time for your child. The correct timing of treatment allows the orthodontist to “guide” the growth and development while creating a more stable environment for the permanent teeth as they erupt. An orthodontic evaluation at age seven is the first step to your child’s healthy, beautiful smile.

Keep Your Pets Safe From Summer Heat The Northshore’s Best
The Northshore’s Best
WARMER WEATHER is here! For our pets, the warm weather has a potential dark side with the danger of overheating and developing heatstroke. Heatstroke is a serious and often fatal occurrence that is wholly preventable. In hot and humid weather, animals have difficulty regulating their body temperature. Pets, such as older animals, snub-nosed dogs, fat dogs, hyperactive dogs and even healthy ones are all at risk for developing heatstroke. Cats and other animals also can suffer from heatstroke, as well. Heatstroke is preventable. Here are some tips: • Never leave your pet alone in a car, even with the windows open. • Don’t let your pet over exert him or herself in hot or warm weather. • Keep pets off pavement as they can burn their footpads easily on the hot surfaces. • Ensure your pet’s coat is brushed and free of mats, tangles and thick undercoating. Clinical signs of heatstroke include fever, ___________________________ panting, high heart rate, vomiting, diarAccount Executive ________________________________________ rhea, seizures, bleeding from the nose or other orifices and coma. Get Mom Moving! Avoid Senior Frailty
LACK OF ACTIVITY in seniors can lead to a downward spiral in health resulting in frailty, a condition that threatens the mind, body and social life of older adults. This is a vital concern for adult children worried about the health and safety of their older loved ones. We regularly see seniors who are literally trapped in their homes because they are too weak to perform many everyday activities that keep them safe, independent and even enjoy life. That’s why staying active is viewed by so many as essential to healthy aging. Different perceptions between family caregivers and seniors can make these issues challenging for many families. We developed the Get Mom Moving Activity Cards and www.getmommoving.com website to address the frailty issue. Both are tools to help keep seniors engaged and fit. A recent national survey shows that among seniors 65 and older, 74% say that staying physically active is a major challenge. 81% of adult caregivers list it as a top challenge for seniors. That leads to another worry: 90% of seniors in the survey say their greatest fear is loss of independence. Frailty can be difficult to identify, but caregivers usually know it when they see it. Some seniors experience frailty after a heart attack or stroke, while others might suffer a fall or sudden weight loss. Family caregivers who encourage and integrate physical, mental and social activities in seniors’ lives help them ward off frailty and stay healthy. Senior Fear Factors Heatstroke is a seriou • Loss of independence. • Declining health. often fatal occurrence • Running out of money. wholly preventable. • Not being able to live at home. • Death of a spouse or other family member. • Inability to manage daily activities. • Isolation or loneliness. • Strangers caring for them.

IN AMERICA, we grow up believing that the harder we work, the more financial success we realize. The American Financial Recovery & Reform Act moving through the Senate is being touted as bringing Wall Street under control but the story not being told is that there are numerous amendments being attached to the bill that threaten this American philosophy. Senators Merkely and Klobuchar sponsored an amendment that prohibits mortgage originators’ commissions from varying based on the size or terms of a loan- effectively limiting originator income. Never in our country’s history has individual income been legislated. America is built on a free enterprise system. Currently, borrowers may pay points to lower their interest rate or may choose to pay a higher rate that includes originator compensation (yield spread). Most elect not to pay upfront points because it takes, on average, five years of making the lower payment to equal the upfront cost. This amendment would end that option because lenders would no longer be able to pay originators with “yield” from the higher rate. Borrowers would pay their originator at the table much like sellers currently pay their realtor a percent of the sales price which will increase closing costs putting purchases out of reach for some. Additionally, borrowers will no longer be able to pay closing costs by increasing their interest rate using the higher “yield” that goes with that rate to pay their costs. If this amendment it not stricken from the bill before passage, costs for borrowers will rise taking residential lending decades backward when origination fees were “a cost of doing business.” Limiting an individual’s income places America on a path to Socialism not to prosperity.

KIDS WANNA HELP® provides opportunities for kids to raise money for charity through fun activities that build self-confidence and encourage a lifetime of community responsibility. What sets this nonprofit apart from others is that the fundraising activities are actually run by kids. This kid-powered organization is the brainchild of Mary-Brent, age 14, and Beverly Brown, age 12. Mary-Brent and Beverly knew kids had the ideas and the motivation to do their part to help out but they did not have an avenue to make it happen. These girls decided to change that. They started Kids Wanna Help®, which offers children in our community a way to make a difference through activities they enjoy, and their parents support. Kids Wanna Help® is creating a burgeoning generation of philanthropists. The Kids Wanna Help® Lemonade Brigade™ kicks off with a Young Business Owner Workshop that teaches kids how to start their own businesses and run them successfully. Business leaders give presentations on topics like marketing, fiscal responsibility, successful interviewing and effective communication skills. Although these topics could be heavy for kids in 3rd–8th grade, the workshop is designed to make these topics interesting and fun. At the workshop, nonprofits also make presentations to the members of the Lemonade Brigade™ to explain what they do 5/8/08

and who they help. These presentations give the kids an opportunity to ask questions and make informed decisions about who should benefit from the money they raise. Kids Wanna Help® provides the members of the Lemonade Brigade™ with all the supplies they need for a successful lemonade stand. At an end of the summer awards ceremony, the money raised by the Lemonade Brigade™ is distributed to the charities. Kids Wanna Help® recognizes the most successful teams as well as the individuals who exhibited strong leadership and team building skills. The Kids Wanna Help® annual fall fundraiser benefits pediatric leukemia. It is an all-day pre-fashion show workshop for girls in 3rd–8th grades, followed by the fashion show itself. With the theme, “To be Beautiful You Have to be Yourself,” this activity empowers girls with a positive and giving attitude, one that will serve them well when faced with the inevitable choices raised by peer pressure. In less than three years, through Kids Wanna Help®, kids in our community have raised and donated well over $50,000 to various charities. This well run organization has received several awards, including 2008 “Charitable Organization of the Year” presented by Mrs. Supriya Jindal. Kids Wanna Help® has proved to be one of the most promising new charitable organizations on the Northshore.

come from all walks of life. In fact, a number of Habitat homeowners continue to volunteer their time with Habitat after they buy their home. Volunteer Nancy-Ellen Martin said working alongside the partner families reaffirms that “you’re taking part of something bigger than yourself.” Habitat for Humanity is not a giveaway program. In addition to a down payment and monthly mortgage payments, new homeowners invest 300-400 hours of sweat equity into building their Habitat house and the houses of others. Because there is no profit included in the sale price and no interest charged on the mortgage, the houses are extremely affordable. While Habitat STW has built more than 185 houses with families in West St. Tammany since 1981, we still have work to do. There are hundreds of people who want more than anything, the chance to become homeowners. But they cannot do it alone. Volunteers and sponsors are the heart of Habitat for Humanity St. Tammany West’s mission.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY St. Tammany West does more than build houses for working families and the poor, it builds lives. A child can spend his time at school learning rather than worrying where he will sleep that night. A working mother can start saving for the future because her Habitat home has an affordable loan. Families can feel the pride of having a home with a permanent address to call their own. But the volunteers benefit too. Habitat STW attracts volunteers from all over, who work with their families, friends and colleagues and leave knowing they made a permanent impact on someone’s life. Feedback from Habitat STW construction volunteers is usually positive, noting their elation at what was created by their hands. “You almost feel guilty because you feel like you get more out of it than the people buying the house,” said one volunteer. Local volunteers work with Habitat regularly on committees, the construction site and in the ReStore. These reliable volunteers

WHAT HAPPENS EVERY day at Children’s Hospital? A peek inside the walls is a start… A mother and father huddle together in a waiting room, their infant son undergoing open-heart surgery in the new Cardiac Intensive Care Unit—the first and only such facility in Louisiana. They are fearful. Inside the operating room, their son’s doctor is not. His hands are steady, his movements calculated. His reputation is flawless, his skills are unrivaled. In the Cochlear Implant Center, a former brain cancer patient enters the room with a big smile on her face. She’s been a cancer survivor for five years now, but aggressive chemotherapy and radiation destroyed her hearing. She turns on the cochlear implant device, and she can hear once again. Tears begin streaming down her face. In the waiting room of the new Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, a tired father awaits word of his daughter’s progress. She seems

listless in her bed, but he hasn’t given up hope. Will she make a miraculous recovery? They so often do here. On another floor, a group of children gather in the playroom, singing along with a Child Life therapist while they make necklaces and paint artwork. The staff here sure is happy, one young patient thinks. And this therapist is his favorite; she always knows when a surprise visit or game is just the thing to cheer him up. For the past half-century, Children’s Hospital has been a true child’s hospital—for all children—no matter their financial background or condition. They all deserve excellent care, sized just for kids, and a healthy dose of fun, too. Because a hospital need not be a cold place for a child, and it need not be a scary place for a parent. THE YOUTH SERVICE BUREAU, serving St. Tammany and Washington Parishes, was founded in 1981 by Judge John W. Greene. YSB provides advocacy, education, intervention and prevention for at-risk youth and their families, helping them reach their full potential. The Crossroads Delinquency Intervention program was developed as Youth Service Bureau’s first program. The Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) program of highly trained volunteers who speak in court for abused and neglected children, was added under the YSB umbrella in 1989. Three other programs to help serve children and families were later developed. They include Families in Need of Services (FINS), a juvenile delinquency prevention program which uses intensive service provisions for troubled youth and their families, the Truancy and Assessment Service Center (TASC), a truancy reduction program for young children, and OPTIONS for young people struggling with alcohol and/or other drugs. YSB serves Louisiana’s 22nd Judicial District from four office locations near the respective courthouses in Covington, Slidell,

І slidell It Has Been My Honor
WRITTEN BY BEN MORRIS, MAYOR OF SLIDELL
WE HAVE BEEN on a very interesting journey together. It started in 1990 when I was elected Chief of Police. I took over the Slidell Police Department during its darkest hours and turned it into a nationally accredited police department. In 2002, and again in 2006, I was honored to be elected Mayor of the City of Slidell. There have been many moments, both good and The Northshore’s Best bad, such as the devastation that Hurricane Katrina wreaked upon our city and the recovery process that followed. I am proud to say that Slidell recovered faster than any other city affected by Katrina, and that was in large part due to the hard work and determination of our citizens and the tireless efforts of the City of Slidell employees. But times weren’t always so bleak. I’m pleased to
say that under my administration, I believe the quality of life in Slidell has improved. We understood the importance of celebrating as a community. When I initiated the Bayou Jam concerts and the symphony concerts with the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, I never imagined they would grow to attract crowds of up to 10,000 residents and visitors. Along with this growth came the construction of the amphitheater, which now serves as the cornerstone of Heritage Park. These concerts brought our community together, even during our most trying times. It has been an honor to serve you and to work with my incredible staff and the many great employees of the City of Slidell. Godspeed, Ben Morris

Slidell is Buzzing! WRITTEN BY AMY BOUTON
18,550 square feet of space to the airport. Built to the newest construction standards, it can withstand hurricane force winds and has floor elevation above the 100-year flood level. It looks like the ribbon cuttings will just keep coming. Two projects that got underway last year are both slated for completion soon. The City of Slidell’s animal shelter and the Senior Citizens Center were both casualties of Katrina. The new animal shelter broke ground in March of 2009, and is funded by the California animal rescue non-profit group, Noah’s Wish. The finishing touches are happening now and it is currently set to open within the next month or so. Funded by federal monies, the new Senior Center is also under construction and should be ready to go as soon as early fall. Thanks to a yes vote on the October 2009 bond issue by Slidell citizens, many major streets and drainage improvements will soon begin. Eight projects funded by the bonds are slated, including Tyler Drive, Audubon (Robert to Savannah) and Driftwood Circle. More information on these projects can be found at www.slidell.la.us. Finally, many thanks to out going Mayor Ben Morris for his service. On July 1, Mayor-elect Freddy Drennan will take the oath of office. We wish him all the best as he takes the helm in Slidell.

SLIDELL IS ALL A BUZZ these days, what with a brand new Mayor-elect and a newly elected police chief, not to mention a slew of summer events and numerous civic improvement projects underway. It seems Slidell, though oozing history, is not afraid to embrace the future. The recently relocated Slidell Cultural Center has hosted many events since opening in its new location on the first floor of city hall in August of 2009. The Salad Days student art exhibit is currently on exhibit and runs through June 17. This summer the Cultural Arts Center is gearing up for the first of its kind annual exhibition where NOMA will share its collection of original Blue Dog works with the city of Slidell. June 25 at 7pm, a reception kicks off the six-week show that is free and open to the public during normal business hours. Start summer for the kids this year with the annual Kids Fest Art Festival on Friday, June 4 from 3:30-6pm. Heritage Park plays host to this beloved event where kids celebrate the start of summer with music, dance and hands-on arts and crafts. This year expect a Calliope puppet show and a dance exhibition by Javier’s Dance Troupe. This event is free and open to the public. The community playground at Heritage Park is a place where kids can get some relief from the heat all season long. The recently completed 900 square foot splash pad has water spouts and fountains that offer hours of outdoor entertainment. April marked the opening of the new 16-unit tee hangar at Slidell Municipal Airport. The airport has recently undergone somewhat of a facelift, including the resurfacing of Slidell Aviation’s ramp, the repaving of four ramp areas and the resurfacing of both the terminal parking lot and the terminal’s back ramp. І leaders City Business Update
WRITTEN BY DONALD VILLERE, MAYOR OF MANDEVILLE
I MENTIONED SEVERAL ISSUES regarding city business during my campaign that I feel need to be addressed. Here’s an update. Ethics Training: On May 13, 2010 all department heads, elected officials, (including myself) city boards and commissions were trained in State of Louisiana ethics, including gifts and donations, financial disclosures and nepotism. City employees will schedule training in the next few months. Operational Audit: We have issued an RFP for an operational study to begin in June of all city departments to examine department organization and efficiency. Engineering Selection: An independent committee has completed its review of qualifications of local engineering companies. A list was produced and will be used for selection in all city projects. This list will
be current for the next two years. The Web: We are in the process of updating our website for greater effectiveness and usage. We are a work in progress and are doing our best to be thorough and efficient. I believe these measures have given us a good start in rebuilding integrity and professionalism in the City of Mandeville. Finally, to all citizens of Mandeville, if you wish to be notified by email alerts for emergency situations, special events or both please send your email address, street address and emergency phone number to: mpeachey@cityofmandeville.com. On the subject line, please write either emergency notification, special event notification or ALL notifications. You can also register on our website, www.cityofmandeville.com. Thank you for your participation.

WRITTEN BY KEVIN DAVIS, ST. TAMMANY PARISH PRESIDENT
JUNE MARKS THE BEGINNING of hurricane season in St. Tammany Parish. As much as we would rather not think about it, solid preparation is extremely important and can result in lives and property being saved. The 2010 St. Tammany Parish Hurricane Guide is now out, and can be picked up at government buildings and many locations throughout St. Tammany Parish. One of the most important things during a hurricane is receiving up to date information. All the ways to get current information concerning storms, evacuations, etc. are listed in the Hurricane Guide. The parish website, www.stpgov.org, the St. Tammany Parish Automated Information Line 1-800-809-2300, and Access St. Tammany Channel 10 are all excellent sources of information. WWL Radio is embedded in the
St. Tammany Parish Emergency Operations Center. The 2010 St. Tammany Parish Hurricane Guide contains a map with both southshore and northshore evacuation routes and contraflow information. In this helpful publication you will find supply checklists for different levels of storm preparation. You will find contact information for visitor bureaus of neighboring states. There are also hotel chain contact numbers for all the major hotel chains. In addition, pet evacuation information, including pet friendly hotel websites, is included. Please use this valuable tool and keep your family and loved ones safe. Have a plan. Preparation is extremely important. Lets all work together this hurricane season to be prepared and hope for a quiet season.

Reasons to Do Estate Planning—Why are You Waiting?
WRITTEN BY RONDA GABB
Estate planning is planning for your life, as well as your death. aroUnd toWn
PEOPLE HAVE MANY different reasons to do estate planning. Some people plan diligently and well in advance of any urgent need. Other people procrastinate and plan only when things are thrust upon them. What are you waiting for? Here are some of the top reasons that motivate clients to plan: Vacations: People want to relax without worrying about “what ifs.” Weddings: When a couple is starting a new life together, they want to start off right and make sure each other are taken care of. Divorce: Most people no longer wish to benefit their ex-spouse after a divorce. Births and adoptions: A new child is a joyous occasion. People want to make sure there is a solid foundation for their new bundle of joy. Even if they already have a plan, they want to make sure that the plan is suitable now that their family has grown. Funerals: The death of a close friend or relative can make people feel their own mortality. They realize that their own death will happen, sooner or later, and they would rather it happen on their own terms. Often, people see firsthand the anguish caused by

poor planning and want to make sure they don’t leave behind an emotional and financial mess. Inheritances: When people inherit money, it often changes their estate plan. They consider how to divide the newfound wealth and what they want to leave as their legacy. Health changes: A significant deterioration in health often makes a person’s mortality more real. They want to make sure their loved ones are taken care of in case their health declines further. Law changes: Changes in the law can affect what would happen to the estate. New opportunities appear from time to time, while other opportunities disappear. The bottom line is that people do estate planning in order to take care of their loved ones and to assure the legacy they envision. When you die, will your loved ones discover a plan in disarray (or no plan at all) or a coherent estate plan? What will your legacy be?
