DADS PROVIDE lots of essentials in life. They give us wisdom we will carry throughout our lives. My Dad was a pretty quiet man, but he managed to impart many key bits of wisdom over his time here on Earth. Like the time I got a traffic ticket as a teenager, he said “Next time you feel like speeding, just come home and give me $100.” Pretty simple—as were most things in life, according to him. One of the most useful pieces of advice he ever gave me, which I still use to this day is—“All you can do is ask. The worst they can say is no.” There have been so many times when I was unsure of a situation or maybe I didn’t feel like I was getting what I paid for—but his simple advice, “All you can do ask…” would replay in my head. And guess what? It’s true. All they CAN say is no and they might even say yes.

PLANNING A PREGNANCY in the near future? If so, it’s a good idea to make an appointment with a physician beforehand. This is especially true if you have any medical problems. Certain medical conditions and medications can adversely affect a pregnancy. It’s important to make sure that any health conditions are optimally treated with the safest medications for pregnancy. Certain ethnic groups have an increased risk of heritable diseases, and for some populations, genetic carrier testing is recommended.

The most important time for folic acid supplementation is in those first few weeks of pregnancy, often before many women realize they are pregnant. Ideally, we want every pregnant mother to have immunity against Rubella, Chicken Pox and Whooping cough. Your Ob-Gyn can help make sure that all of your immunizations are up to date. The folic acid in prenatal vitamins helps reduce the risk of spina bifida. The most important time for folic acid supplementation is in those first few weeks of pregnancy, often before many women realize they are pregnant. Therefore, any woman who is considering pregnancy should take a prenatal vitamin daily. By making that first appointment before pregnancy, we can help to make sure that your pregnancy gets off to the healthiest possible start.

Mouth-guards and Braces

Reduce Your Risk and Prevent a Fall

AS SUMMER RAPIDLY approaches the ballparks are teeming with little league baseball and softball players. In addition, many kids play one sport year round, or are involved with gymnastics, karate, soccer, lacrosse, etcetera. All of these sports have some level of contact involved with them, whether intended or not. It is imperative for children in any contact sport to protect their teeth. For this reason, kids should wear mouthguards even if not undergoing orthodontic treatment. For kids without braces, form fitting mouth-guards offer excellent protection, and come in many styles. They can be custom fabricated by a dental professional, or simply a “boil and bite” thermo-plastic. For kids with braces or other orthodontic appliances, mouth-guards that are form fitting are not indicated. They will hold the teeth in their current positions, and treatment will not progress. Instead, these children should look for mouth-guards specifically designed for braces. These mouth-guards have a generous “trough” into which the teeth and braces will fit loosely.

Either way, mouth-guards protect both the teeth and the bone that supports them. In addition, it has been demonstrated that mouth-guards can reduce the likelihood of concussions. Possible theories supporting this are; the absorption of the force of generated by a direct upward blow to the jaw, more distance between the actual jawbone and the skull itself, and more stability of the head as a mouth-guard may help to strengthen neck muscles. Pat Sajak Fatherhood Lessons Learned

WRITTEN BY AMY BOUTON PHOTO BY TOM BALLANTINE

FOR THREE DECADES, Pat Sajak has been one of the most beloved personalities on television. Later this month the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences will present him with a Lifetime Achievement Award along with Jeopardy host Alex Trebek. “Most of the big names you know in game shows have done eight or ten shows. I joke that I have had this and a paper route. So it has been nice to be associated with this award.” It is this very self-effacement that his audience has come to know and love. But there is another side of him that many do not know at all. The side of Pat Sajak that is a Vietnam veteran who works with the Vietnam Veterans of America, and the side who is a Dad. His own two children ages 20 and 17, did not even realize that their father was a household name when they were young. “What I’ve tried to give them more than anything else is time. One of the great luxuries of this job is that I don’t do it every day. While I’m on television every day, in dog years, I’ve only done about three years of shows. So, early on, my kids barely knew I had a job. They would always hear, ‘Are you taping today?’ So, my kids didn’t know exactly what I did. They thought I was in the tape business…that I worked for 3M or something making scotch tape.” He definitely has learned a lot on his parental journey. “What I have learned from my children is how little they demand. I guess I’ve learned that you don’t have to impress them with “stuff,” you don’t have to give them things, you don’t have to create their day for them—you just have to sort of be there, and help them out with things. It sounds pretty simple, but I think it has been a big part of our lives.” Sports have also been a big part of their lives, and he credits sports with many positives in his family life. “I think sports can buy a couple of more years of childhood. Troubles begin when kids don’t have a focus, and don’t have something to do. Sports can give kids something to do. It has been great—a bonding thing. My son played baseball in high school, and my daughter was very loyal and went to a lot of his games, so that brought them together.” With one child away at college and one about to finish high school, what about the impending empty nest? “I feel like they’re prepared. They’re great kids. It’s going to be different, but I’m not morbid about that. They’re supposed to be gone. That is part of what

Metairie contestant Shawn Dugas and Pat Sajack on set in New Orleans. we were preparing them for and I think that they are going to be really good people, they’re going to have good lives, and I’m glad that I have been a part of that.” Pat’s own father made his living on a loading dock. “People often ask me, ‘How do you keep it fresh on the show every day?’ It’s not that hard. I get everything that most people with a quasi-celebrity status get. My father worked for 30 years on a truck dock in Chicago unloading trucks in the cold and the heat. That’s the question. How did HE get up for that? How did he wake up every morning and say, ‘Okay, I’m going to unload some more trucks so I can put these ungrateful kids through school,’” he says. What would he say to his Dad if he could tell him one thing? “When you’re a kid and you’re griping about this and griping about that and in the meantime, this guy’s working his butt off to make things work for you—you go back and you say thanks, you know? Thanks for doing that.”

So, my kids didn’t know exactly what I did. They thought I was in the tape business… that I worked for 3M or something making scotch tape.”

PAUL HOLLIS

Sophisticated Woman | June 2011

Paul Hollis More Than Living the Legacy WHEN PAUL HOLLIS WAS handed his first collectible coin by his grandmother 30 years ago, something just clicked. It wasn’t long before Paul was an avid coin collector, learning everything he could not only about the precious metals that are the smallest bases of our currency but about the history behind them. Right after finishing college at LSU, Hollis went to work for one of the largest coin dealers in Louisiana as a numismatist, a specialist in coins. Eight years ago, at age 29, he put his knowledge of coins and his business sense to work for himself. Paul Hollis Rare Coins is now known nationwide for providing exceptional quality and service in the trade of rare coins and gold bullion. He appears on national television monthly to ply his wares. And he’s about to publish his first book, American Numismatist, a history of coins interwoven with his own knowledge and research of the American story. But to pigeonhole Hollis as a coin dealer, or even as a successful businessman, would be an oversimplification. Hollis also holds a black belt in karate, and worked his way through LSU as an instructor at a Baton Rouge dojo. He is a devout Christian, practicing his faith at St. Timothy United Methodist Church. And he’s devoted to his family. Paul met his wife, Ashley, quite by chance. Paul was taking his mother to lunch and as they entered the restaurant, Ashley and her mother were leaving. Paul took his mom inside the restaurant and ran back to the parking lot. But he didn’t approach Ashley at first. He talked to her mother. “I said, ‘She is the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen,’” Paul remembers. “’Is that your daughter?’” Paul and Ashley married a few years later and have been together for the 14 years since, and have made their home near Mandeville to raise their daughter, Bree.

Of course no summary of Paul Hollis’ life would be complete without mentioning his parents, the late Senator Ken Hollis, who served 28 years in the Legislature and passed away last September, and his mother, Judy Hollis, a professional homemaker who passed away in 2007 after instilling in all her children the values of family, community, and giving back. His stepmother, Diane Hollis, recently completed an interim term on the Jefferson Parish Council. “Everything I am is because of my parents,” he said. “I carry them with me everywhere, along with everything they taught me.” Indeed, Paul Hollis is a combination of all of these things—his mother’s values and his father’s public service; his grandmother’s attention to detail; the discipline and focus of martial arts; and the absolute love of family and community. Now, Paul is reaching out again, having recently announced his candidacy for state representative in House District 104, the new Northshore district that takes in much of central St. Tammany, from all of Lacombe to parts of Abita Springs, Mandeville, Covington, Slidell and Pearl River. “I love people,” he said. “My parents left a legacy, and I want to do the same. I want to make Louisiana a better place.” Hollis has trouble containing his passion

“When I travel for business, I’m proud to say I’m from Louisiana. And there’s no place in Louisiana I’d rather live than St. Tammany Parish.” “Our citizens are resilient, determined, hard-working and dedicated to their families and the future. But they still have needs that are not being met by Baton Rouge. The Northshore delegation is strong and loud, and I want to make it stronger. I want to add my experience and my skills to the voice of our community in the Capitol.” Paul knows that as a first-time candidate, he will have to work hard and sacrifice time with his family to wage a successful campaign. To him, it’s worth it. “Someday, I need to be able to tell my daughter I did everything I could to make this a better place. I don’t ever want her to leave Louisiana. I’m willing to do my part.” It’s no wonder. His parents taught him that. For information about Paul, visit his website at www.paulhollis.com.

—and his emotion—when talking about his home state’s needs for fiscal responsibility, job-creation, and reform. “Louisiana has started turning the corner,” he said, “but more needs to be done. We need to do more to balance the budget, bring business and good jobs to Louisiana, and give citizens the services they pay for and deserve. When I travel for business, I’m proud to say I’m from Louisiana. And there’s no place in Louisiana I’d rather live than St. Tammany Parish.” With a national business that has no boundaries, Paul and Ashley could raise their daughter anywhere in the country. “There’s no place like this, like what we have here,” he said. “We have a beautiful, clean, safe place to live in St. Tammany Parish, but it’s not even all of that that makes it our choice to stay here. It’s the people.

THE NEWLY OPENED office of Hammond Dental Care in Colony Square Shopping Center brings a fresh dimension of dentistry to patients in and around the Hammond area. The innovative facility is equipped with the most technologically advanced tools available to date, LCD televisions in every exam room, and Dr. Dustin White is there to provide comprehensive dental services in a warm, welcoming, family-friendly environment. “Our main goal is to offer everything patients need here—under one roof,” Dr. White says. Their services include pediatric and adult cleanings, fillings, in-office extractions, periodontal procedures and even Botox and dermal fillers. Dr. White brings an extensive background in pediatric dentistry to the practice through his work with the National Health Services Corps. “I have a special affection for working with kids,” he says. “I know how to reduce a patient’s anxiety and ensure that they are comfortable—whether it is a child or an adult. My objective is to cater to their every need.” As the newest dental facility in the Hammond area, Dr. White says

there is a definite advantage to having the most current equipment at his disposal. “The advantage of having cutting-edge equipment is that the whole process is much more efficient, and the final product is much better. For example, just about everything in this office is cordless. All of our x-rays are digital. This saves time and makes it that much easier to maneuver around the patient more comfortably. Also, everything in here is new.” It also means that most procedures like root canals, bone grafts and extensive periodontal treatments can be handled in the office without being referred out. As the newest member of the Hammond community and the newest branch of the Covington/Mandeville Dental Care Family, Hammond Dental Care will maintain the level of quality service patients have come to expect. “Ultimately, we hope to bring comprehensive, unparalleled dental care to everyone in Hammond who needs it.” Hammond Dental Care is located in the Colony Square Shopping Center at 1109 CM Fagan Drive, Suite P in Hammond. Dr. Craig J. Brandner— Anti-Aging From Within

Sophisticated Woman | June 2011

WRITTEN BY AMY BOUTON PHOTO BY TOM BALLANTINE

20

“THIS IS THE TECHNOLOGY I have been waiting for,” Dr. Craig Brandner says. “The Venus Freeze is by far the best technology I have seen to date to reverse the signs of aging in the face and neck.” The Venus Freeze is used to treat signs of aging through facial toning, and to address problems like fullness under the chin, wrinkles near the mouth, jowls in the face and laxity in neck. This is accomplished by stimulating the body’s own healing mechanisms in the repair process. As a board certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon with two decades of experience, Dr. Brandner has seen and utilized a wealth of anti-aging technology, but says many are painful and invasive. “With the Venus Freeze concept, you are literally stimulating your body’s own healing capabilities through a very comfortable process with no downtime between treatments.” This system addresses two biological factors which greatly contribute to aging skin; the reduction in blood circulation through the capillaries which leads to a decrease in oxygen and nutrients for the skin, and depletion of the cells responsible for creating collagen and elastin (dermal fibroblasts) which give the skin its plump youthful appearance. During each treatment, a hand-held device with several smooth nodules is used to comfortably transmit a combination of magnetic pulse therapy (MP) and multi-polar radio frequency (RF) to the skin with a soothing, massage-like motion. The MPs stimulate the regeneration of capillaries in the skin while the RFs penetrate deep into the skin layers to raise its temperature. The results are increased blood flow bringing oxygen and nutrients to the skin and an upsurge in the number of dermal fibroblasts. This promotes skin self-repair, which results in the production of collagen and elastin. Patients can resume normal activity immediately after the treatment. Dr. Brandner notes that lifestyle also plays a role in the success of any anti-aging treatment. “Lifestyle and technology go hand in hand. A healthy lifestyle is encouraged through proper nutrition and exercise. The best thing about this treatment is that we are not damaging the skin. As a surgeon, first and foremost, you ‘do no harm.’ When you are talking about someone’s face and neck, you are working on their ‘billboard.’ There is little margin for error,” Dr. Brandner says. “With the Venus Concept, we induce a situation that

ADVANCED PAIN INSTITUTE

Treating Pain on Every Level Advanced Pain Institute

Sophisticated Woman | June 2011

WRITTEN BY AMY BOUTON

DR. BARRETT JOHNSTON grew up on the Westbank of New Orleans. Since moving to the east coast to complete his residency in Anesthesiology and further enhance his medical training with a Fellowship in Pain Medicine, both at Harvard Medical School, he has longed to return home to Louisiana. When Dr. Johnston joins the Advanced Pain Institute in Hammond this August as an Interventional Pain Medicine specialist, he will see his longing satiated. “Our family is looking forward to being closer to friends and relatives, warmer temperatures (no snow to shovel), and of course— the food!” he says. The impact of chronic or misdiagnosed pain on everyday life is often misunderstood and frequently overlooked altogether. The emotional, financial and physical toll it can take is massive. Dr. Johnston first became aware of the ripple effects chronic pain can create in a patient’s life during his Fellowship training at the Pain Management Center of Brigham and Women’s Hospital—one of the country’s preeminent training hospitals affiliated with Harvard. “One of the most important things acquired during my training is the recognition that a treatment exists for practically every kind of pain. For a regimen

to succeed, I feel it best to utilize a multi-disciplinary approach in managing chronic pain conditions,” he states. This philosophy incorporates medication, physical therapy, interventional procedures and psychological support into a customized treatment regimen. “With this approach, we address all the interconnected, complex layers of functioning that pain can disrupt to meet an individual’s needs,” Dr. Johnston notes. “To function optimally, all areas for each patient must be treated.” Peripheral nerve stimulation, injectable devices and minimally invasive surgical procedures, such as lumbar decompression which relieves pressure on nerves in the back, work in tandem with more conventional therapies.“Therapies such as spinal cord stimulation are equally efficacious as compared to more invasive surgical procedures in selected patients,” Dr. Johnston states. “As interventional pain medicine specialists, our goal is to familiarize our colleagues with the gamut of treatment modalities available, particularly for cancer patients or patients suffering refractory chest pain. Everyone has a role to play when it comes to diagnosing and treating pain.” In joining the Advanced Pain Institute’s team, Dr. Johnston brings

He completed his extensive interventional pain medicine training at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, the program’s clinical affiliate. “In this field, you can make a difference in people’s lives right away—one of the reasons I find my life’s work so rewarding.” He will be caring for patients in three locations—Covington, Hammond and Denham Springs.

We accepted cases other specialists had dismissed as untreatable. While the Institute has sophisticated interventional procedures already in place, to these I add the latest in technical advances, enabling us to offer the best treatment regimen possible to our patients,” he says. “Every person suffering with chronic pain deserves access to the broad spectrum of therapies available.” The Advanced Pain Institute has three locations. He then completed his Pain Medicine Fellowship training at Harvard Medical School. After practicing in Los Angeles for 18 months, he moved to Louisiana. Currently Dr. Elkersh holds dual faculty appointments as a clinical assistant professor in both the Anesthesiology and Neurology Departments at Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans.

NOW THAT THE SCHOOL year has ended, learning is probably the last thing your child wants to think about. However, leisure time can become enjoyable learning time. Find activities that tap into your child’s interests and abilities. Prepare for a brighter future by volunteering. Your child can work with the elders at a retirement home. They can also volunteer at a food bank or your local Church. Teens who engage in sustained volunteerism are also building college credentials since many universities actively seek out students who participate in service learning experiences. We all loved watching dinosaurs and wax figures come to life in the movie, Night at the Museum. Check out local museums as you travel this summer. Many offer fun educational days that make visiting a museum enjoyable for the entire family. Look beyond the books at your local library. Of course, they will offer a great summer reading program, but check out their resource centers. You may find a wide variety of educational and cultural activities. Younger children can participate in storytelling activities while teens can learn about colleges and universities. It is an excellent time for them to work on applications for the many scholarships that are available. They also need to spend time learning about the qualifications for admission for the universities they are considering. Encourage independent learning projects

geared to your child’s interest. A few to think about include something as simple as keeping a diary or journal. It is also an excellent opportunity to pursue photography or art. For the scientist in your life, consider “Science Fair Central” offered by the Discovery channel, at http://school.discoveryeducation.com/sciencefaircentral. You can find fun and unique mathematics challenges at www.figurethis.org. Other fun activities that are great any time are crossword puzzles, Sudoku puzzles and word searches. They provide a challenging, but fun, way to build mathematics, organizational and critical thinking skills. They are found in newspapers and almost anywhere magazines and books are sold. If you are still not sure how to engage your child in learning this summer, turn to their teachers and school counselor. They are an excellent source of information and can tie learning activities into your child’s interest and aptitudes. Any way you choose to enjoy the summer, make sure you include some activities that will prepare your child for the challenges that lay ahead during the next school year.

Support for Suicide Prevention

WRITTEN BY KEVIN DAVIS, ST. TAMMANY PARISH PRESIDENT

TODAY, I WANT TO TALK to you about the very serious issue of suicide in our community. We don’t often discuss this openly. This must change. The suicide rate in St. Tammany Parish has risen 30 percent from 2005 to 2010. In addition, orders of protective custody, coroner’s emergency certificates and physician’s emergency certificates have risen from 862 to 2,732—over 300 percent—in that same time period. The largest group represented in this increase was middle-aged men. These statistics are unacceptable. To this end, we have formed partnerships with the United Way and other organizations to create Crisis Response Teams which will aid both citizens in distress and law enforcement in our parish. The message we want to get out to the citizens of St. Tammany is that you are NOT alone. Struggling

with feelings is difficult, but it is not something which you must do without assistance. The idea that suicide involves only a single person must be replaced with the knowledge that violence in any form hurts each and every member of a family and of our community. In an effort to make help as easy as possible, we have partnered with the United Way and ViaLink with the 2-1-1 system. If you feel you need someone to talk to, or if you know a friend or family member who is struggling with thoughts of suicide, please call 2-1-1. Trained counselors will talk directly to the person in need, and get vital resources to family members and friends. We need to recognize as a community that we must care for all of our citizens and our families. This effort is one in which we all need to participate. Always call 9-1-1 for emergencies.

If you feel you need someone to talk to, or if you know a friend or family member who is struggling with thoughts of suicide, please call 2-1-1.

WITH THEATERS, DINING, galleries and festivals, St. Tammany Parish has become home to many types of artists and art-lovers. Our chamber’s Cultural Economy Committee has made great strides in their mission to promote and recognize the local arts for their important economic and quality of life contributions to our community. The Cultural Economy Committee prides itself on representing all people, enterprises and communities that transform cultural skills, knowledge and ideas into economically productive goods, services and places, i.e. design, entertainment, literary arts, humanities and preservation, visual arts and crafts. Every year the committee celebrates Cultural Economy Week by hosting a unique luncheon. Typically a soldout event, this year Chef Paul Prudhomme will be the featured guest and will cook an entrée sample, as well as signing his cookbooks. A Cultural Scene Worth Celebrating in Slidell WRITTEN BY KIM BERGERON PHOTOS PROVIDED BY CITY OF SLIDELL

Sophisticated Woman | June 2011

ABOVE TOP: Artist John Doherty’s Katrina memorial sculpture in Heritage Park at the Memorial Plaza. BOTTOM: Artist Bruce Hume’s mural in Olde Towne Slidell.

AN ECLECTIC SWEDISH ceramic exhibit from Sweden. Fine Silver, contemporary works from Ireland. Russian icons from the 18th and 19th centuries. Streets dotted with murals, outdoor concerts and world class theatrical presentations. This isn’t New York or New Orleans, it’s the city of Slidell, and it’s gaining a reputation for being a cultural destination in its own right. When driving through Olde Towne Slidell, one can’t help but be charmed by its offerings—antique shops, boutiques and a variety of restaurants and service businesses, all centered around City Hall and the municipal complex. Within City Hall is the Slidell Cultural Center, which offers free art exhibits all year long. Upcoming highlights include The Art of Tiffany from the collection of Mary Lynn Whiddon and Andy Warhol: Personalities, from the New Orleans Museum of Art. Then there are the murals, a spectacular outdoor gallery of scenic works as large as 10 feet by 50 feet, created by renowned artists Adam Sambola, Phil Galatas, husband and wife team Mickey Asche and Milo Stephens, Bruce Hume, Carol Hallock, Lori Gomez, Barbara Shaw and the late Blake Kenworthey. The larger than life creations have become a popular photo backdrop for both locals and visitors. Nearby Heritage Park is home to a variety of special events, including the Bayou Jam concert series, Kids Fest, Heritage Fest and Some Enchanted Evening with the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra. It is also the site of Memorial Plaza, which features monuments representing two of the most significant events in U.S. history—one an act of terrorism, the other, the nation’s largest natural disaster, the latter of which engulfed over 40 percent of Slidell with its storm surge. At the heart of the 9-11 Memorial is a segment of a steel beam from one of New York’s twin towers. At the seven foot mark of artist John Doherty’s Katrina memorial sculpture is a welded line indicating the level the storm waters reached at the spot where the sculpture now towers. One can’t help but stand in the midst of these two memorials and feel the magnitude of each of these events and how they have forever changed our lives. Crowning the Katrina memorial is a fleur de lis, a steel flower symbolic of the citizens’ resolve to rebuild. Fleur de Triomphe is the sculpture’s name, and a triumph indeed, it has been for this city. This is Slidell, and now, more than ever before, it gives its citizens and visitors many reasons to celebrate.

“Naturally” Restoring Hormones–Part One A VERY POPULAR and effective way of restoring health during menopause is through Human-identical Hormone Replacement Therapy, also referred to as BHRT. The success of this therapy is measured by how well you feel and how your body responds to the therapy that is specifically made just for you. In part one of this discussion we will first talk about the differences between perimenopause and menopause. Perimenopause is the time in a woman’s reproductive life when her ovaries gradually begin to produce less estrogen. It is sometimes referred to as a transition or a stage between a woman’s reproductive life and menopause. This will occur in most woman two to 10 years before menopause. It certainly is not without symptoms. The symptoms are said to be very similar those of PMS. PMS symptoms are, in most cases, predictable and are based on your menstrual cycle. When you experience any or all of the following symptoms you may be experiencing perimenopause. These include irregular cycles or skipped cycles, hot flashes, night sweats, problems sleeping, irritability, depression, breast tenderness, decreased libido; fatigue and vaginal dryness. Menopause is the time of a woman’s life that begins after she has stopped a menstrual cycle for at least one year. Menopause marks the end of childbearing years. As your egg supplies age, you will ovulate less often. During this time your hormone production fluctuates. Soon your estrogen and progesterone levels drop. Symptoms of menopause are very similar to perimenopause. They also can include headaches, rapid heartbeat, problems with memory and fuzzy thinking. In part two of this discussion in the July issue, we will delve into customized hormone replacement options.

Katrina Remembered in Watch Me Die WRITTEN BY HOLLY WATSON

HURRICANE KATRINA was devastating to many people, but it was particularly unkind to Mira Gallier. Watch Me Die, the latest installment from suspense writer Erica Spindler, centers around stained-glass restoration artist, Mira and the six year anniversary of the hurricane. Mira lost her husband and her livelihood in Katrina and after six years of emotional instability, she is now ready to regain her life. But a religious zealot has been leaving dead bodies around the city and the only connection the police can make, is to Mira. Mira begins the book with such a limp personality and to experience her fall apart with the discovery of each dead body and finally gain her confidence and spirit is refreshing. The list of the characters introduced are numerous and with great individuality and backgrounds, so spotting the climax is not obvious—a plus in any book.

For the non-New Orleanian, the references to specific landmarks and local culture could be distracting. For the local reader, it is quite nostalgic and fun to see our familiar places in print. The secondary storyline of the NOPD detectives is just as compelling if not more so than the main one. Spindler delivers a marvelously enjoyable book and gives readers a chance to remember Katrina through Mira’s hardships. Watch Me Die by Erica Spindler is available at local booksellars.

Goodbye

WRITTEN BY CANDACE WATKINS, MAYOR OF COVINGTON

THE PAST EIGHT YEARS have been the most fun, exciting and challenging of my life. The privilege of being the Mayor of Covington is only rivaled by the privilege of being Mrs. Trevor Watkins and the mother of Patrick, Bennett and Catherine Bartley, and Trevor Jr. God has blessed me immensely and I will be forever grateful. It has been an honor to serve beside the staff and employees of the City of Covington. Working with these men and women has been so rewarding. The city is extremely fortunate to have so much talent and dedication in its workforce. I thank them all for their patience with me and unwavering support. Over the past eight years I have experienced the sorrows of losing many valuable citizens of Covington, including my own father Gerry Bennett. I have experienced the joy of many weddings and births including

that of my son Patrick and his wife Kelly. I will be a grandmother in September. We survived Katrina and lived to prosper another day, as we will weather the storms of the current recession. The City of Covington will always be here, hopefully with all of its charm intact, and its weaknesses strengthened. As I leave office, I do so at the start of the West Thirties Neighborhood Community Development Project. I plan to stay with this project as a volunteer and work to revitalize this neighborhood to a condition equal to all of Covington’s neighborhoods. I ran on a platform of “balancing progress and preservation.” I will continue to support that platform going forward as a volunteer citizen. Thank you all. It’s been a heckava good time!

I plan to stay with this project as a volunteer and work to revitalize this neighborhood to a condition equal to all of Covington’s neighborhoods.

Ponchatoula’s Time Capsule Opened After 50 Years

The new capsule will be buried during our July 4th celebration and remain there for the next 50 years. Some of the items from 2011 being considered for the next capsule are several newspapers, a current edition of Ponchatoula Chamber’s cookbook, ‘Toula Cooks Too, a signed declaration of the 2011 chamber board members and our calendar of events; a photo CD of our downtown as it is now, a cell phone, group photos of City Council members, police and volunteer fire departments, a fire department shoulder patch and minutes of their last meeting. Other items submitted the local community will also be considered. I am lucky enough to add some of my sample paintings of Ponchatoula scenes to the capsule. MUCH EXCITEMENT TOOK place last month in a continuation of Ponchatoula’s 150th birthday celebration. Back to back events culminated in opening the Time Capsule that had been buried since 1961. After using a sledge hammer, a jack hammer and then a saw, Mayor Zabbia, along with former Judge Brent Dufreshe, former Mayor Collins Bonicard and local historian Jim Perrin, revealed the contents of the capsule. An excited crowd of local citizens, including some of whom were present when the capsule was first buried, had a chance to examine the 50 year old documents and photographs that will be on permanent display at the Collinswood Museum on Pine Street. Earlier in the week people had gathered to hear Mr. Perrin’s and “Miz Maude’s” presentations, enjoy a block party with live music, food prepared by local organizations, and of course lots of birthday cake.

THE OLD SYSTEM of everyone having their teeth cleaned only twice a year has fallen out of favor. While some people may be able to maintain their dental health with semiannual cleanings, many patients find that their mouths and teeth are in better shape when they have cleanings more frequently. Insurance companies typically pay for two teeth cleanings a year. Due to the high incidence of gum disease, many patients require more frequent visits to help keep the disease under control. There are times when a regular cleaning is not recommended to treat a patients gum problems. A regular cleaning is recommended for patients who do not have bone loss, bleeding gums, receding gums or tooth mobility.

It may be hard to believe, but three quarters of American households own at least one barbecue grill, and that number continues to grow.

regular cleaning is no longer appropriate. Once a patient is diagnosed with periodontal disease, a procedure known as root planning is used to remove the bacteria and their toxins as well as the diseased deposits from the surface of the tooth roots. Typical warning signs may include gums that bleed easily, a bad taste in the mouth, red swollen gums, or teeth that appear longer or that have shifted. Following root planning, patients will have periodontal maintenance to keep their mouth under control. The only cure for periodontal disease is tooth removal. Once you are diagnosed with periodontal disease a regular cleaning is no longer appropriate. Remember, your dental insurance will help you pay for treatment. It was never designed to pay for everything.

Shop Locally to Boost the Economy

WRITTEN BY FREDDY DRENNAN, MAYOR OF SLIDELL

IT IS MY PLEASURE to serve you and this great city. Slidell provides all the amenities of a great metropolitan area with the shopping, entertainment and benefits that a big city provides. We have one of the best school systems in the state, a nationally accredited police department and a thriving cultural scene. But as you know, times are tough. Slidell, like many municipalities in the country, has fallen upon hard economic times. Our sales tax revenue is down, and the predictions for the future are grim. As St. Tammany Parish grows, there are more shopping opportunities than ever before. People are leaving Slidell to shop in other cities. People in other communities who previously traveled to Slidell are now shopping closer to home. Add the rise of internet shopping and the fact that people are struggling more than ever before to make ends meet, and you can see why sales tax revenue is down. But the news isn’t all bleak. There are several exciting new economic developments on the horizon. Northshore Mall is getting a $16 million upgrade. If

you’ve seen the recent renovations to the mall in Hammond, then you have a good idea of what the future holds for Slidell. I have also received word that work is set to begin on the Summit Fremaux project this summer. As least one major retailer has agreed to lease retail space, and hopefully, many more will follow. Plans are also in the works for a developer to annex a new subdivision into the city limits which would add 7,000 more homes to Slidell. All of these projects should provide a major economic boost to our community. If you’re a bargain hunter or a shopaholic, Slidell offers something for everyone in every price range. And when you shop in Slidell, you support the local economy, create revenue that funds city and parish services, and help to improve the quality of life in your community. So whether you’re shopping for clothes at the mall, enjoying a fine meal at one of our many great restaurants, or browsing antiques in Olde Towne, every dollar you spend in the City helps.

Good News for Commuters

WRITTEN BY DONALD VILLERE,

MAYOR OF MANDEVILLE

I WANT TO PASS on a valuable bit of information I received at last month’s Regional Planning Commission meeting. For daily commuters feeling the economy crunch, you might want to sign up for GreenRide Connect. It is completely free and helps connect commuters with carpool matches in the New Orleans Metropolitan Region. They make it easy to track your commutes and convert them into cost savings and emission reductions. Simply go to http://norpc.greenride.com and register. You can also call 504-483-8500 for information. If you have any further questions you can also call me at my office at 985-626-1082. The operational study performed by LaPorte, Sehrt, Romig and Hand was completed and we recently met with the operational committee to discuss the remediation measures offered by our directors. I believe

this study was extremely successful and effective and implementation will begin this month. As a result, we will be updated and on track for higher efficiency in all areas of administration procedures. As you know, hurricane season began June 1st and as a reminder, it is important to begin preventative measures to protect your homes and families. Aside from having the products you need for your home or travel, if you are doing any repairs or if your home is under construction, any loose materials need to be secured during a hurricane event so that they don’t become projectiles. Please remind your contractor to attend to that for you. Also, we will be here at City Hall for the duration of every hurricane. Keep our number handy for any questions you may have. Stay tuned to our website for local updates on events, weather, or the latest news regarding the City of Mandeville.

It is completely free and helps connect commuters with carpool matches in the New Orleans Metropolitan Region.
