Chica was found in Coral Gables, one of the most affluent areas of Miami, which is probably why she is such a little princess. Chica loves beautiful outfits, so the move to New Orleans was perfect for her since we do love dressing up here. Her favorite holidays are Halloween and Mardi Gras. She loves chasing squirrels, sunbathing and eating pate. Chica enjoys traveling and is looking forward to her next trip!
Mighty Mouse was rescued from St. Tammany Animal Services and is a current resident at Shady Key Horse Farm. While at PetSmart one day, he made a beeline for the squeeze toys. He came home with a taco toy and a new name—Chorizo (a type of Spanish sausage). He and his taco are inseparable. He lives with three English Bulldogs and a cat, and likes to spend time with the rescue horses.

BUDDY
Fluffiest WINNIE
Buddy is almost 15 years old. He is a Dachshund/ Beagle mix and was adopted in 2008. Obviously, he loves to sleep and nap all day! He has a bed in every room. He loves his back and ears rubbed, likes car rides and sunbathing in the grass. He loves his momma so much and is right there with her all the time. He has two human brothers, one who is autistic, and he is very protective of him.
Winnie was born in Houma and she is a little over a year old. She now resides in Madisonville. Her favorite things to do are go on walks, play fetch and watch TV. She knows sit, stay, shake, and high five. She loves to snuggle, dance and to be held like a baby. Winnie’s soft, fluffy hair and goofy personality are what make her so lovable to everyone she meets!

Why does my dog need the underwater treadmill? Our state-of-the-art underwater treadmill is very different than a swim in your back yard pool. Swimming is a flex motion for a dog. The underwater treadmill mimics an extension motion, like walking, while simultaneously taking the stress off the joints. As the muscles get stronger, the water level is lowered, and this ultimately allows your geriatric pet to move better on land. It’s also beneficial for post-surgical recovery and a fun way for healthy or overweight pets to exercise in a safe and air conditioned environment.

What are the most important things I can do to keep my pet healthy? There are several things I recommend to keep your pet physically and emotionally healthy. Spend plenty of quality time with your pet, including enrichment activities, exercise and training. Feed them a balanced, healthy diet with adequate moisture and ensure they maintain a healthy weight. Visit your veterinarian at least twice a year. Follow their recommendations for dental care, wellness and preventative medicine such as lab work, vaccinations and parasite control. Regular grooming and hygiene are important as well. Of course, lots of snuggles and loving too!

Why might my pet need a surgical specialist? Board-certified surgeons work closely with the owner and the primary veterinarian before and after surgery in a team approach to ensure well-rounded, continuous care for your pet. Veterinary surgeons are dedicated to providing the very best in surgical care. They also act as a resource for your primary veterinarian by providing consultations on difficult or unusual cases. With their extended and concentrated training, specialists offer expertise that ensures the best possible outcome for pets and their owners.

Does my pet have a microchip and how does it help my pet? A microchip is a non-harmful device, smaller than a grain of rice that is injected into your pet between the shoulder blades and will be functional lifelong as a permanent way to identify a pet. Each microchip is embedded with its own personal 15 digit number that will be registered specifically to your pet. If an animal is found and brought to an animal facility, they will be scanned and if “chipped”, their number will be searched in a national database to find you immediately. One out of every two dogs and one out of every three cats with registered microchips return home.

Is the cost for blood work prior to surgery really worth it? Blood work prior to surgery is very important. Most veterinarians recommend performing a Complete Blood Count (CBC) and a Chemistry. Your pet could possibly have an underlying problem that might not be obvious on a physical exam. Certain illnesses can affect your pet during or after surgery but certain precautions can be taken if any abnormalities are noted on the blood work

Is there an alternative to treating my pet's constant scratching other than steroids, antibiotics and immunosuppressive drugs? Absolutely! Keeping your pet's immune system strong and balanced is paramount to prevent inflammatory reactions in the skin (including ears) that cause allergies. Feeding real, nutritious food that nourishes skin–which is the barrier to bacteria, yeast and parasite invasion–is most important. We can help you do this! Adding natural anti-inflammatories, herbal formulas and acupuncture serves to stop the itching and help the skin to heal naturally and stay healthy. Your fur baby will be ecstatic at meal time and live a longer, happier life!

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO BECOME A VET? I started out as a groomer. Encouragement from mentors led me to want more. As a vet tech, I learned that compassion is the most important quality. I knew I had that and wanted to take it to the next level. WHAT IS YOUR APPROACH TO PET CARE? ‘Do the Right Thing.’ Along with wound and pain management, I offer the latest surgery alternatives depending on circumstances and finances. I treat patients just like I’d treat my own–helping them to be happy as long as possible. WHAT SETS YOUR PRACTICE APART? My job doesn’t end with surgery. I often treat companion animals. Specialized equipment such as a hyperbaric chamber allows rehab care after procedures to make sure they are comfortable and functional in their daily tasks. WHAT SERVICES DO YOU SPECIALIZE IN? Veterinary surgery and rehabilitation. Specialized procedures and techniques like soft tissue and orthopedic surgeries. It’s equally important that they rehab comfortably and return to optimal functioning. My goal is to give them their best quality of life. WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF YOUR JOB? I can do complicated surgeries but also offer alternatives. For an older dog with mobility issues, affordable options are medications and exercises. It’s an art to balance pets’ and owners’ needs presenting what’s best for all, and I do that.

Christie McHughes, DVM CROSSPOINT VETERINARY HOSPITAL • DVM - LSU Veterinary School • BA, Zoology Southeastern Louisiana University • Fear-Free™ Certified WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO BECOME A VET? As a little girl, I grew up on a farm and enjoyed animal care. My older sister and I were very involved in 4-H and FFA, so we would wake up very early before school and feed and milk our champion Jersey cows. In addition to my cows, I always had a cat as a pet, and I knew that I would always continue in animal care. Veterinary medicine is my passion. WHAT IS UNIQUE TO YOUR BUSINESS? We have superior monitoring systems including capnography, digital dental radiography, class IV laser therapy, oxygen cages for emergencies, ultrasonography, separate isolation and ICU services. We are among only 12% of veterinary hospitals in the US and Canada who follow the American Animal Hospital Association guidelines and hold ourselves to the highest of standards. WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF YOUR JOB? Communicating and educating clients is paramount. Pets are living longer and quality animal healthcare is the reason. I help pet owners understand the importance of routine bloodwork, a good diet, weight control and preventatives for parasites. Watching for trending abnormalities and implementing an early treatment protocol helps maintain the lives of our pets. WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB? My job is so rewarding. I love when pet owners come in with new additions to their family. Whether it be a life-saving surgery or early detection and treatment, we want to offer the best services and care. My goal is to make sure that these pets have a happy and healthy life and I feel that I can help pet owners achieve this. That's when I sit back and smile.

A Shelter Fur All EVERY SINGLE ANIMAL
brought in to the
St. Tammany Department of Animal Services finds shelter–whether a stray, an injured animal picked up by a good Samaritan, an animal picked up by an Animal Control Officer or an animal surrendered by its owner. In 2019, this Shelter took in over 4,000 animals. From the moment animals are brought in, the dedicated staff at the shelter works toward one goal–to see a day when animals will not suffer because of abuse and neglect, and that every pet born into our community is assured a good home and loving care its entire life, all while protecting our citizens from the dangers and nuisances caused by uncontrolled animals. They also work to educate citizens of St. Tammany Parish on the importance of pet care and the essential need to spay or neuter pets to prevent overpopulation, in part, through partnerships with local veterinarians to offer low-cost spay/neuter programs. The Department of Animal Services has a robust foster-to-adopt program where individuals foster animals who would otherwise live in the shelter, until they’re ready to be fully adopted. This program is a welcome companion to walk-in adoptions and placement in forever homes through partnerships with credible, caring rescue groups. All animals who are finally adopted from the St. Tammany Parish Animal Shelter are spayed or neutered, microchipped and vaccinated. So far, in 2020, over 700 animals have been rehomed. You too can help Animal Services in their mission. Consider adoption if you are looking for a new four-legged member of your family. You will give a shelter animal a forever home, help reduce the shelter population and gain a loyal companion for years to come. Adoptable animals may be viewed at www.stpgov/pets. For more information about services offered at Animal Services, please call 985-809-0183. AS DAWN BREAKS over Madagascar, the forest comes alive with wild, glowing eyes searching for the perfect place to bask in the sun before beginning the dance that dates back over 60 million years. Wails waft through the tamarind trees calling the troupe together for their morning forage. And as lemurs begin their daily ritual, halfway around the world Tina Aust dreams of largely impacting their welfare, if not their very survival, right here on the Northshore.

It's The Lemur Things In Life
cover story
WRITTEN BY JAN WINDHORST PHOTOS BY STEVE RANDON
FROM THEIR INTRIGUING
song-like calls to wide-eyed gazes and playful curiosity, lemurs have captured
the hearts of many wildlife lovers. Their importance to the study of human genetics and their status as the world’s most endangered land mammal also make them extraordinary. Tina was introduced to humans’ oldest living primate relatives at the Los Angeles Zoo where she volunteered for five years. Despite other careers as a film producer and rape crisis counselor, once she started working with animals, she never stopped. Describing herself as a New Orleanian who happened to be born in California, Tina moved here permanently in 2015. “While visiting in 2006 I saw the spirit of the people here amidst the devastation of Katrina. People who had nothing were willing to give others the shirt off their back. This is home.” Tina became a zookeeper at the Audubon Zoo and connected with four other ladies who shared her passion for these exotic-looking prosimians. They now join her in acting to save them from extinction. The Louisiana Lemur Foundation began in 2016 with Tina as President/CEO; Jessica Deville, Director of Internal Affairs; Jamie Marks, Director of Research; Melissa Passman, Animal Management Director; and Samantha Zarin, Outreach Director. “We strive to make a lasting impact for lemur conservation and set a positive example for our community by establishing an organization composed of dedicated and strong female leaders.” That impact will be felt locally and worldwide, says Tina. “We’re part of the Lemur Conservation Network, which includes over 50 organizations working to save lemurs. We already have lemurs to be taken in by our facility but are still trying to procure the right piece of land.” While it’s illegal to own lemurs as pets in most states, five states still allow it. “The pet trade significantly threatens the species. They’re charming from afar, but terrible pets and not meant to live domestically. Those bred for sale suffer social and health issues, and buyers end up regretting their decision. Unfortunately, most zoos cannot accept former pet trade lemurs.” The only lemur specific rescue in the country is the Endangered Primate Foundation in Jacksonville, Florida. “They have limited space and are eagerly awaiting our help.” The foundation’s main objective is to provide a much-needed rescue and rehabilitation center and outdoor classroom to educate about lemurs and wildlife conservation, along with contributing to lemur conservation efforts worldwide. Tina’s team is not only passionate, but also highly credentialed. Jessica has a B.S. in Ecology, Evolution, and Environmental Science; Jamie is working on her Ph.D in Integrative Biology; Melissa has ten years of primate experience, and she is the senior primate keeper at the Audubon Zoo; and Samantha is working on her MBA. Citing lemurs' soul-piercing, bright yellow eyes as inspiration, Jessica has meticulously documented the team’s mission saying, “Lemur conservation is what I’m meant to do with my life. When visitors step through our doors, we want them to feel transported to a safari in Madagascar and have a chance to respectfully observe these ‘wandering spirits’ in a habitat similar to their homeland. But that’s Phase 3, and we have much work to get there.” Phase 1 consists of fundraising to purchase at least 15 acres of forested land to construct an aviary-style enclosure over large areas in which lemurs will have free roam. Phase 2 includes clearing areas for buildings and breaking ground on animal housing, a vet hospital, education building and offices. Once complete, permits and certifications will be obtained, and lemurs will be accepted. Phase 3 includes teaching former pets how to “be a lemur” through rehabilitation and, finally, opening the facility to guests for guided tours. Tina requests patience during this process. “The whole plan is on our website, and as excited as we are to open, what’s best for the lemurs always come first. We’re flipping the scenario of lemurs in people’s homes to people visiting lemurs in their natural environment to enjoy and appreciate them responsibly. They’re not meant to sit on your shoulder or be touched, but encountered in their wild habitat. Once it’s healthy for them, we’ll open for guided tours. Guests will learn about lemur conservation and enjoy their journey through the rain forest.” Stay-at-home orders have delayed fundraising, but Tina is committed to doing whatever it takes to raise awareness and contributions. “I have a lemur suit and I’m not afraid to wear it at schools and festivals – anything to promote outreach.” The enthusiastic leader asks for volunteers to help with marketing and events and encourages donations via their website. “Getting the land is our first priority and everything helps. We love Amazon’s SMILE program gifts and Facebook birthday fundraisers.” Tina is calmly, confidently tenacious in the endeavor so dear to her heart. “Sharing space with these joyful animals has changed me. The connection is indescribable, and it’s my mission to help save them. The worldwide lemur conservation community needs us and is waiting for us to open and provide critical help – and I’m not going to stop until we do." Building Your Tribe

WRITTEN BY INGRID RINCK, FOUNDER & CEO SENSIBLE MEALS
IF YOU’VE READ any of my other articles or posts, you’ll know that I’m very much into positivity and light, building up other women, and growing as a person–every single day. One of the best ways to continue to be the best that you can be is to surround yourself with people that you want to be like, that bring you joy and that you can learn from. Amy Weatherly once wrote, “Behind every successful woman is a tribe. A tribe of other women who support her and love her and push her to be her absolute best but stick by her even when she’s at her

absolute worst. A tribe of other women who could choose to compete, but take the higher, better road of collaboration instead.” A tribe can be described as a group of like-minded people with like-minded goals and desires who care for one another and elevate each other. If your tribe is amazing, you will be too. Here are some of the ways that you can build an amazing tribe: 1. Get Involved. Getting involved in ladies' groups is a wonderful way to meet other women that are driven, community-minded and have common interests. I highly recommend a group that I founded, the Leading Ladies League, as well as the American Heart Association Circle of Red. You can also join a Carnival Krewe or another organization that has social events and similar values. 2. Be Open Minded to New Women that You Meet. Before you meet new women, you may already have an idea of who you think they are via social media or others' opinions. It is important to realize that your perception may be incorrect, and you may find that people aren’t who you initially thought they were. The old adage "don't judge a book by its cover" rings true in finding female friendships. Stop judging and

4. Constantly “Join In” the World Around You. No matter how isolated you might feel, especially in today's trying times, make a point of telling yourself that you're not alone. You’re connected to everyone and everything around you. You may find new tribe members by saying a friendly hello to a stranger on your way to work or by making eye contact with another mom. A compliment can make someone else’s day. Search for the connections you would otherwise ignore and immerse yourself in your community by becoming a connector. Spark talks. Trigger smiles. Bring people together in the space around you. I would love to have more amazing women included in my tribe! To join me and other like-minded

Kangen Water: A Healthy Balance PHOTOS BY PAIGE KIRKLAND
AT JUST 28 YEARS OLD, Susan Creighton was diagnosed with colon cancer. Her journey to healing would lead her to discover what she describes as life-changing—a discovery that she and her business partner Julie Schwarz now want to share with others through Kangen Water® Center in Covington. Susan introduced Julie Schwarz to the benefits of Kangen Water, and together they decided to open the first store in St. Tammany Parish—Kangen Water Center—located in the heart of Covington. Opening this store was a dream with a purpose for both of these owners. Customers have become aware of the benefits and uses of this water, as well as growing nurturing friendships with these two owners. Enagic® is the manufacturer of Kangen Water ionizer units and has been acclaimed around the world for more than 45 years. Kangen Water units are the only ionizers that are registered medical treatment devices. They are registered in four countries and are the only ionizers that have the Water Quality Association certification seal on every unit. WQA certification is the “Mark of Product Quality” and has become one of the most recognized drinking water treatment certification programs in the world. This certification is awarded to the most reliable and trusted producers of quality drinking water systems. Susan notes, "In this pandemic that we're all facing, Kangen Water machines replace the need for bottled water. In addition, these units create strong, acidic water—hypochlorous acid used for disinfecting and sanitizing—replacing the need for household cleaners such as Clorox®, antibacterial cleaner, antibacterial wipes, hand sanitizer and disinfectants. It can replace most chemicals in the household without jeopardizing sanitation, making your home a truly “green”home." At the Kangen Water Center you can enjoy a free 30 day trial so you can experience the difference Kangen Water can make for you and your family. Cancer patients receive free water and no purchase is ever required for cancer patients. Both Susan and Julie are cancer survivors and want to help you along your journey to recovery. When you come to the Kangen Water Center, you are coming into a family who cares for you and your overall wellness. Julie and Susan will do their best to guide you on your path to better health. The Kangen Water Center offers in-house financing with low, monthly payments and will help you with your needs to determine which unit is right for you and your home. Come visit the store and meet Susan and Julie. Try the water, taste the difference and be on your way to a healthier you!

Healthy Summer Grilling WRITTEN BY LIZ TARABOUR, MS, RDN, CDE, LDN
SUMMER IS HERE indeed! And for many of us, especially being stuck at home due to quarantine,
• Offering BioTE® Bioidentical Hormone Therapy • PRP Therapy • Morpheus 8 • Red Light Therapy
the grill has been getting lots of attention. Summer grilling can work for us or against us in terms of health. Here is how to get it working FOR US! Some grill ideas include: Kabobs–chicken, lean beef, tofu or shrimp, summer berry salad, grilled corn on the cob, Caesar salad, simple grilled veggies, watermelon-feta-mint salad, bruschetta, potato salad–prepared with greek yogurt, hummus, grilled pork tenderloin, grilled chicken or shrimp tacos, cucumber and tomato salad And burgers don’t have to be a gut bomb. You can use ground turkey or ground beef. It's most important to look for the lean/fat percentage on the packaging label. Try to purchase turkey or beef with a lean percentage of at least 90% or 93% is even better. Fresh herbs and seasonings such as

rosemary and roasted garlic make burgers extra flavorful. Grated zucchini can be added to the lean ground beef to help keep the burgers moist and add a few vitamins. Try this tasty recipe! Ingredients: 1 pound lean ground beef or turkey 1 medium zucchini, coarsely grated 3 fresh rosemary sprigs, leaves finely chopped 1 teaspoon garlic powder ¼ teaspoon sea salt ½ teaspoon cracked black pepper 4 whole-grain hamburger buns 4 slices medium tomato 4 lettuce leaves 4 red onion slices
Preparation: 1. Preheat grill to medium-high. 2. Mix together the beef or turkey, zucchini, rosemary, garlic powder, salt and pepper. Shape mixture into four patties. 6. Grill patties several minutes on each side, until desired doneness. 7. Add burger to bun and top with a tomato slice, lettuce leaf and onion slice.

Cat Psychology 101: How To Coexist in Harmony WRITTEN BY KIMBERLY BLAKER
WHAT DOES IT mean when your cat yowls nonstop or scratches up your furniture? Cats actually have darn good reasons for their behaviors.
Feline Vocalization When your cat meows, it's usually asking for something or just saying 'hello.' The more frequent and intense the meows, the more intent your cat is on getting a response. If the meowing is continuous, particularly after trying to satisfy your cat's needs, it may be sick or injured. Nonstop yowling can also be a sign of discomfort, illness, worry when their territory is threatened, or a desire to mate. Some cats even yowl when they're bored. Purring usually signifies contentment but can mean they're worried as well. Hissing, snarling, or growling is a clear warning to back off–or else.
Tails Tell A Tale When a cat sweeps its tail widely, it's annoyed or wants to be left alone. If a cat is agitated or frightened, its tail movement is intensified and sweeps back and forth rapidly. Cat's tails can puff up too. If your cat's tail puffs up with its ears erect and whiskers pointed forward, the cat's usually happy or having fun. But, when a bristled tail points straight up or down, possibly coinciding with an arched back and flattened ears, the cat is fearful. When the fur on a cat's whole body puffs up, the cat is very angry.
Those Destructive Claws Cats scratch things to shed the dead frayed layers and sharpen their claws. It's also one of the ways cats mark their territory. Finally, it's a natural part of feline play and stretching. To combat the problem, give your cat a scratching post. Also, keep your cat's claws trimmed. When your cat does scratch on other objects, clap loudly, so the cat stops. The American Association of Feline Practitioners recommends against declawing. The procedure is much more invasive than most people realize and can result in infection and extended pain during recovery.
10 Plants That Are Poisonous To Pets WRITTEN BY SNOANN WILLETT, LOUISIANA MASTER GARDENER
THERE ARE MORE than 700 plants known to cause reactions ranging from mild nausea to potentially life-threatening. The following list of ten are most commonly available and pre-existing within the residential yard. 1. Sago Palm: All parts are highly toxic especially the seeds. It contains cycasin and at least three other toxins. 2. Aloe: It contains saponins–think soap, and causes severe irritation of the mouth and intestines. 3. Azalea: All parts are toxic. It contains the neurotoxin grayanotoxins that causes gastrointestinal issues. 4. Chrysanthemum, also known as mums: The flowers contain naturally-occuring pyrethrins, commonly used in flea treatments for animals and pest control in the garden. 5. Kalanchoe: A small succulent with bright flowers grown outside or inside. They contains bufadienolides–a class of cardiac steroids that in sufficient amounts causes heart damage. 6. English Ivy: It has similar compounds found above in Kalanchoe; not as lethal but risky. 7. Lilium species–includes Peace Lilies, Asiatic, Daylilies, Tiger Lilies: All parts are toxic including the water with an arrangement. It contains calcium oxalate crystals known to cause kidney failure, especially in felines. 8. Nandina: All parts are poisonous, especially the berries. It contains hydrogen cyanide which is highly toxic. 9. Blue-green algae–technically not a plant but a bacteria: It's commonly found in warm, calm fresh or saltwater. It is not fully understood which types release poisonous toxins as some forms of cyanobacteria, such as spirulina, is a popular health food supplement. 10.Marijuana: The growing popularity of CBD oil necessitates a word of caution. Consult with a trained veterinarian before administering to pets. Protect your whiskered and furry friends by researching new or replacement plants for the home or garden. As an added precaution, consult your favorite veterinarian for further information. Happy Growing! Sophisticated Woman | August 2020 35

AUTHOR JESSICA WHITEMAN
THERE ARE MANY children’s books dealing with introducing young children to a new family pet, but not too many about making sure the dog is comfortable with the arrival of a new human baby sibling. Jessica Whiteman brings this unique perspective to “Humphrey Has a Hunch,” her 2019 board book illustrated by Max Alley. The Mandeville author’s inspiration came from her and husband Bryan’s family dog, Humphrey, and his extreme curiosity when they brought home a small creature from the hospital. Their son, Noah, arrived home to meet Humphrey as well as the two other family dogs, Hemingway and Hepburn. Humphrey’s comical interest and expressions when investigating the baby brought many laughs and lots of joy which Jessica wanted to share with other families. With its small size, sturdy design and colorful illustrations, this sweet and funny offering is geared towards reading to young children and encouraging hands-on participation from them. Humphrey follows clues to discover what this strange new creature his parents brought home could possibly be, and in the end, finds a new best friend. Amazon reviewers unanimously give the book five stars with high praise such as, “Our kids love the story line and the illustrations,” “incredibly clever,” and “this is our new favorite book that makes our little boy giggle every time.” Jessica credits Bryan for always encouraging her, Noah and the pups for inspiring the book, and her twin babies (Jack & Owen) for providing sleepless nights which led to the completion of the book. Because all three of her sons were born premature and spent time in the NICU, Jessica is committed to donating books to children’s causes, hospitals and schools." 38 Sophisticated Woman | August 2020
