Unconditional Love THIS AUGUST MARKS the 16th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, the storm that devastated the New Orleans area and changed lives, including my own. And like many others, we moved our family to the Northshore to make a fresh start. This month’s Enterprising Woman, Jennifer Hancock, and husband Dr. Bob Hancock also moved to the Northshore 16 years ago. Envisioning a bright future working together to create a special place for pets in their new community, a year later they opened South Paws Surgical Center. Read Jennifer’s powerful story of perseverance and love on page 22 and also get to know South Paws' two outstanding veterinarians, Dr. Rose Lemarié and Dr. Melissa Blazevich in their business profiles. In this month’s issue, we showcase the many talented Northshore veterinarians, pet service providers and non-profit organizations. In keeping with our pet theme, read about the

PET TALK :
Why do pets need dental care? Pets are affected by many of the same oral health conditions as humans. Periodontal disease (the dreaded gingivitis!) is actually one of the most common diseases, affecting as much as 85% of dogs. Providing oral home care, such as brushing daily, is very important as well as annual visits to a veterinary dentist for a complete oral health evaluation. Veterinary dentists can perform advanced procedures to address your pet's unique situation to ensure your pet has a clean oral bill of health!
Melissa Blazevich, DVM South Paws Veterinary Specialists | 2631 N. Causeway Boulevard in Mandeville | 985-809-1590 | southpawsvet.com
Does my dog really need knee surgery or will it heal by itself? Cruciate ligament ruptures are the most common cause of rear leg lameness in dogs. These injuries are the result of how your dog is built rather than trauma. Although the lameness may improve somewhat without surgery, the ligament will not repair itself and the knee will remain unstable. Larger dogs need a procedure called a TPLO (Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy) that reconstructs the angles across the knee. Most dogs that have surgery will return to their normal function and be pain free.

Why does my dog need the underwater treadmill? Our state-of-the-art underwater treadmill is very different than a swim in your back yard pool. Swimming is a flex motion for a dog. The underwater treadmill mimics an extension motion, like walking, while simultaneously taking the stress off the joints. As the muscles get stronger, the water level is lowered, and this ultimately allows your geriatric pet to move better on land. It’s also beneficial for post-surgical recovery and a fun way for healthy or overweight pets to exercise in a safe and air conditioned environment.

What are the benefits of doggie daycare? Dogs are pack animals and social creatures. Doggie daycare has helped many dogs with their separation anxiety. Your dog doesn’t feel anxious about you being away because they are occupied having fun and being busy enjoying added exercise and social time with a regular routine. Regular exercise can help prevent the onset of a variety of diseases and ailments, maintain a healthy weight and muscle tone, and improve the dog’s overall mood health. This helps dogs learn what behaviors are socially acceptable among other dogs as well as humans.

What is the benefit of professional dog training? Does your dog bark, dig, bite, pull or jump on everyone, or engage in destructive behavior? Does he just not listen to you? A professional dog trainer can work with you and your dog to modify or eliminate unwanted behavior, and instead, encourage desired, positive behavior. In most cases, in a few short lessons, you will have improvement resulting in a confident, obedient, and in-control dog. A well-behaved dog makes for a happy family, and you’ll be the best neighbor on the block!

What are the most important things I can do to keep my pet healthy? There are several things I recommend to keep your pet physically and emotionally healthy. Spend plenty of quality time with your pet, including enrichment activities, exercise and training. Feed them a balanced, healthy diet with adequate moisture and ensure they maintain a healthy weight. Visit your veterinarian at least twice a year. Follow their recommendations for dental care, wellness and preventative medicine such as lab work, vaccinations and parasite control. Regular grooming and hygiene are important as well. Of course, lots of snuggles and loving too!

Christie McHughes, DVM CROSSPOINT VETERINARY HOSPITAL • DVM - LSU Veterinary School • BA, Zoology - Southeastern Louisiana University • Fear-Free™ Certified WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO BECOME A VET? As a little girl, I grew up on a farm and enjoyed animal care. My older sister and I were very involved in 4-H and FFA, so we would wake up very early before school and feed and milk our champion Jersey cows. In addition to my cows, I always had a cat as a pet, and I knew that I would always continue in animal care. Veterinary medicine is my passion. WHAT IS UNIQUE TO YOUR BUSINESS? We have superior monitoring systems including capnography, digital dental radiography, class IV laser therapy, oxygen cages for emergencies, ultrasonography, separate isolation and ICU services. We are among only 12% of veterinary hospitals in the US and Canada who follow the American Animal Hospital Association guidelines and hold ourselves to the highest of standards. WHAT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF YOUR JOB? Communicating and educating clients is paramount. Pets are living longer and quality animal healthcare is the reason. I help pet owners understand the importance of routine blood work, a good diet, weight control and preventatives for parasites. Watching for trending abnormalities and implementing an early treatment protocol helps maintain the lives of our pets. WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB? My job is so rewarding. I love when pet owners come in with new additions to their family. Whether it be a life-saving surgery or early detection and treatment, we want to offer the best services and care. My goal is to make sure that these pets have a happy and healthy life, and I feel that I can help pet owners achieve this. That's when I sit back and smile.

Jessica Vinterella, DVM SOUL PURPOSE VETERINARY HOSPICE & HOME EUTHANASIA • DVM - LSU Veterinary School • BS, Biological Sciences University of Southern Mississippi • Chi University - Acupuncture Certification Current Course WHAT IS YOUR APPROACH TO PET CARE? I provide supportive care treatments and end of life services for pets in the comfort of their own homes. Open communication with an understanding of each pet's individual lifestyle needs allows me to help owners maintain a good quality of life for their pets until they are faced with the difficult decision of humane euthanasia. WHAT SETS YOUR PRACTICE APART? I provide end of life care and in-home euthanasia services for terminally ill and aging pets. I provide only in-home services, allowing a level of comfort for owners and their pets that cannot be achieved in the clinic setting. WHAT DO YOU LIKE MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB? Being able to come into people's homes provides a much-needed service with minimal levels of stress, and brings them a sense of peace and comfort when they need it most. I often say that the most difficult thing for an owner to do is not the decision for humane euthanasia, it is putting their pet into the car, knowing they are going to a clinic to say goodbye. WHAT IS THE MOST DIFFICULT PART OF YOUR JOB? I find that guiding owners to know when it is time to say goodbye is the most difficult part of my job. We must take time to define what a good quality of life means for their pet and then determine when that quality has declined to the point of making the difficult decision for euthanasia.

DOGS
Dogs can see shades of blue, yellow, green and gray. The color red registers on a gray-scale in a dog’s vision. Dogs have about 100 different facial expressions, most of them made with the ears. Most domestic dogs are capable of reaching speeds up to about 19 miles per hour when running at full speed. Experiments have shown that dogs can locate the source of a sound in 6/100ths of a second. Domesticated for more than 10,000 years, the dog was one of the first animals tamed by humans.
CATS
A cat’s memory can last as long as 16 hours, exceeding even that of monkeys and orangutans. A cat’s tongue is scratchy because it’s lined with papillae, tiny elevated backwards hooks that help to hold prey in place A pack of kittens is called a kindle, and a pack of adult cats is called a clowder. Cats have more than 100 vocal sounds. A cat can jump as much as seven times its height.
BIRDS
To survive, every bird must eat at least half its own weight in food each day. A bird’s resting heart rate is 400 beats per minute. Americans own more than 60 million pet birds. Larger parrots such as macaws and cockatoos live more than 75 years. In crested birds, a raised crest indicates the bird is excited or happy to see you. A completely flat crest indicates fear.

Special Love For Special Needs Animals
health
WRITTEN BY JAN WINDHORST
UNTIL SUZI LANGER
came along, 11-year-old Bifford had a rough life. He was rejected by his
mother as a kitten and adopted and surrendered numerous times. Suzi, a vet tech, took on the longhaired domestic cat when a local shelter reached out reporting that Bifford was being bullied by the other cats. “He has poor balance, but I had no idea what was wrong with him at the time. When I brought him to a wellness clinic for regular shots, I was shocked and angered that they offered to put him down as a courtesy. He was wobbly but certainly not ready to die.” Now on a mission to help Bifford and other cats like him, Suzi learned that he has a neurological disorder called cerebellar hypoplasia or CH. “His underdeveloped brain affects his coordination, but he’s not in any pain. He doesn’t know he’s different and runs and plays like any other cat would. CH pets can have happy and healthy life spans. They can learn to adapt to their abilities and compensate over time.” Suzi is blazing a trail for changing attitudes about disabled cats and dogs. She wants to change the idea that the solution to CH is euthanasia. “The condition is just misunderstood, and we’re trying to remove the stigma from it. The severity of CH can vary, but putting them down is not the answer.” Suzi also has an epileptic rat terrier with a bullet in his hip, a blind cat, and a pug with spina bifida and swimmer syndrome that affects his front legs. The compassionate caregiver says she’s working to train the pug and has a wheelchair on order, but that getting one is a long process. Aside from her love of animals, Suzi also has a very personal reason for changing attitudes about disability. Eleven years ago, at 22, Suzi developed epilepsy. “It was terrifying to suddenly have this condition. I had my first seizure in a college classroom. I now know what it’s like to live with that stigma, and the misunderstanding around my own health and abilities is phenomenal. I know I can do remarkable things, and even if they’re disabled, people and animals are all still worthy of love. So, just like me, with patience and work Bifford’s going to do awesome. If you have empathy and love to give, that’s half the battle.” Based in Youngstown, Ohio, Suzi is in the process of establishing a non-profit to get the word out about fostering, adopting, volunteering and donating. “We work with organizations and agencies to offer information and resources related to care of special needs pets – especially those with CH. Our website, presidentbifford.com, has an interactive map with special-needs-friendly clinics and facilities. People who’ve been told to put down their cats with conditions like CH are desperate for a second opinion. Our resources allow them to get that.” Suzi says she is branching out to cover more states and a wider scope of special needs including wheelchairs for amputees and paralyzed animals, and the response has been encouraging. “We’ve had ten calls from all over the country this past week. We have resources in Louisiana but want to expand. Vets and professionals can sign up with us as CH friendly or to learn more so that they can become a needed resource. Our band of ‘specially-abled’ pet parents wants to keep learning and educating others.” Suzi says that 10 years ago she knew nothing about special needs animals but that she can’t imagine her life without them now. “Please adopt and don’t just go for the cute ones. Pay attention to those that are frightened or need more patience. You might just find the love of your life. Bifford has taught me a lot about tenacity and resiliency. He’s helped me grow as a young woman since that first terrifying seizure. I’ve also learned not to baby him too much. We’re both survivors. With the right attitude, work and love we’ll be OK and make the world a little easier place for specially-abled people and pets to thrive.” For more information about disabled or special needs animals and their care, or to register as a special-needs-friendly veterinarian or clinic, visit presidentbifford.com. 18 Sophisticated Woman | August 2021

Jennifer Hancock had not been outside of Raymond, Mississippi until she ventured to Starkville to begin the Veterinary Technician Program at Mississippi State University. Raised on her grandparents’ farm, Jen’s grandfather steered her to animal care and the experiences that would define her life. “I loved the farm and the animals, but I wanted to do hair and makeup. Sick from lung cancer and barely able to talk, Pawpaw sat me down right before I started college. He said, ‘You can go to cosmetology school any time. You love animals and should be working with them.’ All I could hear was his voice in my head when declaring my major, and I checked off the Applied Science box.” As her grandfather predicted, Jen’s grades came easier when her classes related specifically to animals. “It just resonated with me, and my love for every aspect of veterinary care grew.” From there, Jen’s path unfolded before her. In 1999 while in Starkville, she met a charming veterinary medicine student named Bob. Marriage followed graduation, and the couple moved to Missouri and then Virginia as Bob pursued veterinary surgery. “We were lucky that I found positions in radiology at the same vet schools where he performed his internship and residency.” After Bob’s graduation, the couple would once again work together. “Bob was from Algiers and wanted to come back home. “Louisiana Veterinary Referral Center in Mandeville offered us positions, and the Northshore location was close to our families.” Envisioning their bright future, The Hancocks purchased a home in August of 2005. Seven days later, Hurricane Katrina hit compromising the LVRC facility and giving the new employees a trying start. “It was crazy. So many animals needed rescuing and the building was damaged, but we persevered. I was the ICU Supervisor and was later made the Internal Medicine Department Supervisor. We joked that we were fortunate to work together and still enjoy each other’s company at home.” Now settled in, Jen and Bob felt it was time to expand their family. In 2006, they welcomed Madison to the world. “Bob always wanted a daughter. Years earlier, he even told his mom she’d be named Madison. He was a planner and knew what he wanted.” In early 2010, when LVRC changed ownership, the pair discussed opening a practice. By April 1 of that year, their vision had produced another, albeit very different, wonderful creation. South Paws Veterinary Surgical Specialists was born. “Healing Hands with a Passion for Paws” was their motto. “Bob had high goals for clients, and we both wanted something special for our community. It had to feel comforting for the pets and communication was key to making owners feel at ease.” South Paws began with just four employees – the Hancocks, an additional vet tech and a hospital manager. They comprised the 24-hour-a-day staff, rotating so that patients were never left alone. “That was difficult with a four-year-old, so we expanded quicker than anticipated. By July we hired a surgery resident and night staff.” As a referral practice, South Paws only sees patients with advanced care or surgical needs referred by their general veterinarians. With that specialized care came specialized technology. “We started with one 2,500 square foot bay. Now, we have four bays, a CT scanner, MRI machine and hyperbaric chamber along with a full rehabilitation department. It’s rare to have that collection of equipment outside of a university setting. Between that and Bob’s enthusiasm and accomplishments, we’ve been featured on some episodes of Pit Bulls and Parolees and WGNO news stories.” As the business grew to 34 employees, including two additional surgeons, there was more family time including vacations to Mexico – their favorite destination. “It was total downtime for Bob. We even added a dream pool area to our house with a Mexican theme. Bob would go out there early mornings in his sanctuary preparing for the day.” For their 15th anniversary, Jen wanted only one thing. “Our wedding in Raymond was small, so I wanted to renew our vows. It was a beautiful celebration, and I couldn’t have been happier.” Jennifer Hancock – continued on page 24 Sophisticated Woman | August 2021 23

Enterprising Woman Jennifer Hancock Just as the Hancocks’ careful planning delivered success, life delivered a surprise. Although not expecting to be a mom again at 40, Jen says that Annabelle was a blessing in disguise. She would stay home to raise her girls and leave the business to Bob. After Annabelle’s second birthday party, celebration quickly turned to concern when Bob’s difficulty breathing led Jen to call an ambulance. Concern became shock and grief when Jen lost her 43-year-old husband just a week later on Father’s Day morning. “The first year was the most difficult. I could barely get out of bed, but I had two children to care for and wanted to honor his life by keeping his dream alive.” Uncertainty regarding South Paws’ future led to staff seeking other jobs. Jen’s next blow came with COVID. “I would put on scrubs but just couldn’t bring myself to go in. It made me literally sick thinking how it would affect their families, but I eventually had to let 13 people go. Each time I got the willpower to return, I faced another setback. Was God telling me to quit?” But something inside her wouldn’t allow that. The first hopeful sign of recovery was the addition of Dr. Melissa Blakevich. This allowed the practice to now offer dental care and oral surgery. Melissa had worked at South Paws before vet school and knew she wanted to return to honor Bob’s legacy. But, as before, a step forward was met with another setback. With the sudden departure of the hospital’s only remaining general surgeon, Jen was left with few options. However, South Paws’ reputation and philosophy would prove stronger than the overwhelming challenges. With an outstanding reputation of her own and the ability to dictate her future, Dr. Rose Lemarié came to the rescue. In 2000, Dr. Rose co-founded Southeast Veterinary Specialists in Metairie where she was Head of Surgery. That practice was eventually bought by a corporate operation. Familiar with South Paws, Dr. Rose told Jen she could have continued working under the new ownership, but she was eager to work in a more personal atmosphere giving individualized attention — and Jen was thrilled to have her. “The team of 12 we have now is so positive and inviting. I just want to let everyone know we’re here continuing the important work that Bob started. I’ve fought to improve myself since I was back on the farm, and I’ll continue to do so. I see the purpose in many things now – this team is excellent and enthusiastic. Annabelle is a joy that keeps me going, and Madison is so like her father. I still have yet to find purpose in Bob’s passing…” And as if on cue, Annabelle charges in showering Jen with energy, questions and toys, immediately lightening the mood. As for Madison, who with maturity beyond her years has listened to Jen recount the family’s joys and losses, she enthusiastically declares her intent to follow in her father’s footsteps. “I have to keep the business going until she takes it over,” smiles Jen. “And the family needs to remain strong and happy too. I’m taking the girls to Mexico for the first time without Bob. I’m nervous, but I’m doing it. My biggest lesson in all of this is never give up.” Jennifer Hancock, RVT is the owner of South Paws Veterinary Specialists, located at 2631 N. Causeway Boulevard in Mandeville. Melissa Blazevich DVM
Dr. Melissa Blazevich grew up on a farm where she loved caring for all animals, especially, cows and horses. During her freshman year at Southeastern Louisiana University, she made the decision to commit to a career in veterinary medicine. As a third-year student at the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine she developed a strong interest in veterinary dentistry. She pursued that specialty after graduation with a rigorous internship at Texas A&M followed by a three-year Veterinary Dentistry and Oral Surgery Residency Program at Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists in Houston, Texas. Dr. Melissa explains, “Dentistry and oral surgery is a very specialized area. When I was a student at LSU, there was not a dentistry program during my clinical rotations, so I went to Houston to complete an externship. After going through the rotation in dentistry and oral surgery, I knew that’s what I wanted to do. I immediately knew I found my niche.” While working for him before vet school, Dr. Melissa was inspired by the late Dr. Bob Hancock who founded South Paws with his wife Jennifer. “I loved working at South Paws and wanted to bring my knowledge in dentistry and oral surgery back to the clinic. I learned a lot from Dr. Bob. Returning to South Paws and starting dentistry and oral services in October of 2020 felt like I was coming home.” Dr. Melissa says most of her clients do not even realize dentistry and oral surgery specialties exists until their pet is in need. Her services are the first of their kind on the Northshore. “General veterinarians will refer their patients to me for services such as root canal therapy of a fractured tooth, oral cancer and maxillofacial trauma, such as getting hit by a car. As this specialty grows, we can learn more and treat more.” While many veterinarians do general dental cleanings, Dr. Melissa says she offers the full gamut of dental care and oral surgery. “I start with a complete dental cleaning, an oral exam which includes full mouth probing, and a complete set of intraoral x-rays. If treatment is needed – such as a tooth extraction – it can be done immediately. Some of my favorite patients are police dogs. Bite work is essential in their line of duty, so they’ll come in for a fractured tooth to receive root canal therapy. My goal is to protect the affected tooth so that the K-9 Officer is able to return to work and do their job without pain or discomfort.” Dr. Melissa says she also enjoys working on cats and has worked on larger animals in a zoo setting. “I love big cats. It would be a great goal achieved if I could work on Mike the Tiger.” Dr. Melissa Blazevich is a Doctor of Veterinarian Medicine with her practice limited to dentistry and oral surgery at South Paws Veterinary Specialists. South Paws is located at 2631 N. Causeway Boulevard in Mandeville. For more information, please call 985-809-1590 or visit southpawsvet.com. 26 Sophisticated Woman | August 2021

Rose Lemarié DVM, MS, DACVS
Dr. Rose Lemarié brings decades of surgical experience to the South Paws team which she joined in January of this year. The multi-talented surgeon grew up in Arkansas and attended college on a music scholarship, but her love of science and animals ultimately led her to veterinary school. She received her DVM from Louisiana State University in 1991 followed by an internship in Companion Animal Medicine and Surgery at the Virginia Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Lemarié completed her Master’s Degree in Veterinary Clinical Sciences (LSU 1997) and Residency training in Veterinary Surgery (LSU 1998) to became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. As a specialty practice, patients are referred to South Paws by general veterinarians when they need advanced care. Dr. Rose explains, “I’m here for when there’s a specific problem a regular vet isn’t trained to do. We maintain a close relationship with our referring vets and keep them informed regarding treatment and any ongoing needs.” While certified to perform any veterinary surgery, Dr. Rose is known for her expertise in orthopedic and neurological surgeries. In 2000, Dr. Rose co-founded Southeast Veterinary Specialists in Metairie where she served as head of the Surgery Department. That practice grew in popularity and size, and was eventually bought out by an even larger corporation. “I could’ve stayed after the practice was bought, but it wasn’t my style. I couldn’t wait to come back to work in an atmosphere that feels more personal. After her husband Bob’s passing, Jennifer Hancock decided to continue running South Paws, which they had built together. She’s assembled a small but very talented and loyal core team. They are dedicated to her and to giving excellent veterinary care. I feel appreciated here and my feeling for them is mutual.” Along with the camaraderie among staff, Dr. Rose says the smaller organization offers other benefits including having more time to care for patients and to focus on the relationship with the client. “I didn’t want to work in a corporate-type atmosphere. This is the way I love to practice. South Paws is family oriented, and I can give individualized care and personal attention.” Although smaller in staff, there is no compromise in technology or talent. “Bob had set up the practice so well in terms of specialty equipment to achieve his vision and philosophy – it’s the perfect situation for me to give the best care possible.” Dr. Rose Lemarié is a Board-Certified Small Animal Surgeon at South Paws Veterinary Specialists. South Paws is located at 2631 N. Causeway Boulevard in Mandeville. For more information, please call 985-809-1590 or visit southpawsvet.com Sophisticated Woman | August 2021 27

Avoid Injury By Stretching The Right Way WRITTEN BY BILLY BEAUDREAU, PT, DPT, MTC, OCS, FAAOMPT
FOR YEARS WE
have been told to stretch
before exercise to avoid injury. But did you know that doing the wrong stretch before exercise can increase your risk of injuries? There are two basic types of stretching – passive and active. Passive Stretching: This type of stretching uses prolonged holds to lengthen a muscle, using an external force such as a strap or another person. Passive stretching before exercising can actually lead to a higher risk for injury. When you passively stretch a muscle, there are reflexes in your body that tell that muscle to relax. In essence, you are turning off that muscle temporarily. By turning off muscles prior to activities, you are reducing the effectiveness of that muscle decreasing your body’s ability to avoid injury. The best time to perform passive stretching is after exercising as a cool down. Active Stretching: This type of stretching is something that you do yourself, using short one to two second holds or continuous movement. Active stretching prior to exercise will increase the circulation to muscles. It helps get them warmed up and ready to exercise. There are many ways to perform active stretching. Finding the right stretches that are comfortable for you is key to warming up your body and reducing your risk of injury. If you have questions about which stretches you can do and when, it is best to consult a trained professional. If you are having pain while stretching, it is best to stop stretching and consult a physical therapist. A comprehensive physical therapy evaluation can help you find the root cause of your pain and speed your recovery helping you to return to your activities again with ease.

Preparing Your Summer Garden For Fall WRITTEN BY SNOANN WILLETT, LOUISIANA MASTER GARDENER
THIS SUMMER HAS been an exercise in patience. At least cloudy skies make cooler temperatures. The current warm season will continue for another couple of months. This checklist will have your plantings in fine form for milder months ahead.
1. Support: More common in large mixed beds, taller annuals and perennials may be leaning on neighboring plants that are smaller or growing slower. Support by staking to bamboo poles or rods with garden twine. A few tall annuals/perennials that exhibit this habit would be butterfly weed, cigar flower, shrimp plant, lantana and turk’s cap.
2. Prune: Perennials grown as annuals continue growing until late October but may not look their best, such as coleus, begonias, four-o-clocks, salvias and torenias. Even if they are blooming, trim them back no more than half their height. The plant will reward with fuller, more vibrant growth and blooms. True perennials benefit from regular deadheading and removing dead flower stalks. Prune hard if new growth is evident from the base. Shrubs and trees naturally reduce new growth during less hours of sunlight to prepare for winter. Complete pruning before the end of August.
3. Fertilize: A light sprinkling of an all-purpose fertilizer will entice new growth to annuals and tender perennials that have been pruned. If it hasn’t rained in two weeks, use a soluble fertilizer. Fertilization of any shrub or tree is not necessary.
4. Replace: Hanging baskets or container plants of true annuals will be tired and worn-out. Replace with another heat-loving plant or mix with colorful foliage plants such as coleus, purple leaf basil or bright green sweet potato vine.
When thinning or pruning, root a few cuttings or re-pot plants as a gift. Take time for Nature. Happy Growing! 34 Sophisticated Woman | August 2021
