"A Rose By Any Other Name Would Smell As Sweet" So many roses. So many colors. Have you ever wondered about the meaning of roses? Here's some fun insight into their colorful meanings!

Red

Red roses are the traditional symbol for love and romance, and will always be the classic way to say, "I love you." The red rose also reflects beauty and perfection. Deep or dark red roses can indicate a hidden beauty.

Pink

Words like gentleness, joy and sweetness are just a few ways to describe the meaning behind the pink rose. A pink rose can also convey happiness, gracefulness and admiration.

Yellow

Bright, cheerful and joyful are what come to mind when thinking of a yellow rose. Yellow roses create warm feelings and provide happiness. Giving yellow roses can tell someone the joy they bring you and the friendship you share.

White

White roses represent unity, purity and virtue. White roses are traditionally used in weddings and can represent new beginnings. White roses are also associated with honor and reverence, making them a fitting memorial for a departed loved one.

Orange

Orange roses evoke energy, and can indicate enthusiasm, desire and excitement. Giving them can symbolize your passionate romance and can be an expression of fascination.

Salmon

A slightly pinker shade of orange, the meaning behind salmon-colored roses sends a similar message as orange roses. Salmon roses can indicate desire and excitement. Giving this color rose is a way to share your desire for someone and let them know how you truly feel.

Ivory

They are said to represent charm, thoughtfulness and gracefulness. Ivory colored roses also represent richness and perfection. Ivory roses would be great for letting someone know you care, without romantic intentions.

Lavender

Love at first sight or just an enchanting way to say, "I love you!" Lavender roses can offer a daily reminder of your love and eagerness, and signify growth in your relationship.

Blue

Blue roses represent mystery, the impossible, or the unattainable. Give a blue rose to someone and you are saying, “You are extraordinarily wonderful and unique.” Blue roses are perfect for the woman who marches to the beat of her own drum.

Green

Green is the color of life, abundant growth, and constant renewal of life and energy. The green rose signifies the ongoing rejuvenation of spirit, and is a messenger of cheerfulness. 8

Cornerstone Dentistry Care Founded On Faith And Trust DR. LASCARI KNEW at a young age she wanted to be a dentist. As a young girl, she would often sneak in to her parents’ dental practice to peer over their shoulders as they meticulously worked on a patient’s smile. After obtaining her Bachelor of Science Degree at LSU, Baton Rouge, she graduated from Louisiana School of Dentistry in 2012 with her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree. After working at a high-volume practice in Hammond for eight years, Dr. Lascari wanted to create her own practice in a totally different way. Her practice is called Cornerstone Dentistry because her life is centered on The Cornerstone of Jesus Christ. God gives each of us certain gifts, talents and abilities to display His glory and bless others. He graciously gave her the ability of using her hands to change a life through a smile. Dr. Lascari opened her own practice to create a warm, welcoming environment for patients who may be fearful of coming to the dentist, to listen to their cares and concerns, and to know they are valued. With the staff's calming demeanor, confident care, and expert treatment, patients feel at peace during each and every procedure. She is an advocate for her patients' smile wellness and keeps them educated and informed about oral-systemic health, while building trust through honest, compassionate care. She is excited to humbly serve the community of St. Tammany. Dr. Lascari is one of an elite group of mini implantologists in the country, becoming a Mini Dental Implant Center of America (MDICA) in 2020. Mini dental implants are just as effective as traditional implants, but their smaller size creates some additional benefits. They are less expensive, take less time, are less invasive, require fewer visits to the dentist, and are completed with little to no discomfort. If you have ever been told you are not a candidate for implants, mini implants use the bone that is available and are a great option for individuals with a complicated medical history. This includes prior head and neck chemotherapy and/or radiation, or autoimmune diseases. Visit Dr. Lascari and let her help you regain your health and confidence through a life-changing smile!

Cornerstone Dentistry is located at 16564 East Brewster Road, Suite 104 in Covington. For more information, call 985-869-8020 or visit cornerstone-dentistry.com or minidentalimplantscovingtonla.com. 12 Sophisticated Woman | February 2022

Redefining the Dental Experience MOST VISITS TO

the dentist don’t involve a cozy blanket to snuggle up

with, noise-cancelling headphones, warm peppermint scented towels and Netflix on-demand. But then again, Dr. Daniela Eversgerd at Allure Dental in Mandeville isn’t like most dentists. From the moment you step into Allure Dental’s boutique-like office, it’s evident that no detail has been overlooked. Custom designed chairs and a large chandelier greet patients in the waiting room, and luxurious leather chairs offer a comfortable visit in the exam rooms. Even the name of her practice was carefully crafted. “Allure means fascinating in French,” she explained. “We want our patients to have fascinating smiles.” Growing up in Brazil, Eversgerd saw plenty of smiles. Her mom is a pediatric dentist and an orthodontist so she witnessed first hand how dental health can impact lives. She had always been a fan of American culture and decided to go to dental school at Southern Illinois University, graduating first in her class. When her husband, an emergency room doctor, was offered a job in New Orleans, they decided to make Mandeville home. It was an easy choice for Eversgerd, who enjoys the wonderful culture and friendly people the Northshore offers. Eversgerd spends time getting to know new patients during their initial exam. She is particularly gentle with those who have had unpleasant dental experiences in the past. “We take our time and want to create a calm experience,” she said. “I truly care for my patients. If they raise their hand, I’ll stop what I’m doing.” She takes a desensitizing approach to those patients who have dental anxiety. “If someone has a mouthful of cavities, we’ll start with one small one and graduate on subsequent visits.” Perfectionist that she is, Eversgerd ensures that her patients receive only the highest quality materials. “Whatever I put in their mouth is going to last a long time,” she said. Her office uses the latest tools and technology, including the CEREC technology, which enables her to create and deliver dental restorations all in one visit. “My patients usually nap while I’m making their crowns,” she laughed. “They love it.” Digital technology also allows for more precise placement and preserves more of the tooth. Patients who go through extensive treatments such as root canals and crowns are sent home with a batch of homemade soup. Eversgerd is excited about new technologies and trends in the dental world. She uses Botox® to treat TMJ and facial pain. She also offers a dental device for patients who have sleep apnea and find a CPAP machine uncomfortable. Finally, Eversgerd is enthusiastic about offering free virtual smile makeover consultations through her website, where she will send the patient a personalized video discussing treatment options. Even after 20 years, Eversgerd still loves being a dentist. “I love seeing families and people of all ages, from kids to the elderly,” she said. “I find joy in changing people’s lives.” Allure Dental is located at 1901 US-190, Suite 14 in Mandeville. Youth Service Bureau's Chef Soirée: The Purpose Behind the Party WRITTEN BY JAN WINDHORST

THE NORTHSHORE’S LONGEST-RUNNING, high profile charity event entices guests with gourmet food, top shelf libations, two live music stages, fireworks, a new car raffle and a vibe that energizes Bogue Falaya Park. It’s no wonder Chef Soirée has grown into a household name over the last 38 years, now drawing approximately 3,000 revelers. And while scores of volunteers work tirelessly to create a night of frivolity for guests, the motivation is the ongoing, serious purpose of the beneficiary. The dedicated staff at the Youth Service Bureau (YSB) relentlessly provide advocacy, counseling, education, and intervention for St. Tammany and Washington Parish youth and their families. “The effects of the pandemic have escalated substance abuse,” says Cleveland Wester, MSW, YSB President and CEO. “We’ve seen a huge uptick in our Options program as well as our FINS program.” Wester explains that YSB administers many programs: CASA—special advocates for abused and neglected children; TASC addressing truancy; FINS aimed at juvenile delinquency prevention; Crossroads for juvenile delinquency intervention; and Options, which offers outpatient substance abuse treatment for teens. “Overall, there’s a twentyfive to thirty percent increase in the need for our services from a year ago. Our programs are for all families and kids who need it. If they can’t afford program fees, no one is turned away for services. The Chef Soiree is our major fundraiser and critical to our advocacy. It allows us to make sure kids and their families reach their full potential.” Crossroads Program Director, Mary Kay Walden, concurs, “Crossroads offers delinquency intervention for those who have broken the law to keep them from entering the adult system. We work to get them off the road they’re on and steer them towards becoming a productive part of society. The pandemic has definitely increased the amount of youth we’re serving. There are increased mental health issues like learned helplessness. Our clients feel like they have no control over anything going on, and they are dealing with depression from lack of ability to socialize. In addition, demographics play a role with some parents feeling they are unable to manage the pressures of remote schooling from home. The types of crimes we see are cyclical, and now we’re seeing more substance abuse including the use of marijuana and dab pens as a way to cope. Both the children and their families need help.” Walden said that their low recidivism rate is their success story. “Not seeing them again is how we know we’ve done a good job. Eighty-nine percent finish the program and eighty-five percent don’t re-offend. Those numbers are

really phenomenal.” The dedicated director also reports a ninety-four percent satisfaction rate from the program’s clients and their parents. Last year, Walden’s exceptional work was recognized with the Judge John W. Green Award for Outstanding Agency Contribution for 2021. In her youth, Walden actually met Judge Green, but under very different and serious circumstances. “Right after I turned seventeen, I stole a vehicle and was convicted in Judge Green’s court. I was sentenced to two years in the St. Gabriel penitentiary. He granted me a suspended sentence with three years probation. Unfortunately, I stayed with a bad crowd and got arrested again for drugs. Once again Judge Green believed in my rehabilitation and arranged treatment at Odyssey House in New Orleans.” Walden says she was shocked to receive the award but honored and humbled to make Green’s judgment correct. “Because one man had the insight to help change the trajectory of my life, I have the opportunity to pay forward that belief he had in me. I truly believe my past was a blessing and God’s plan all along.” Walden says it took time, but she eventually got married and raised four children, then earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Education and a Master’s Degree in Supervision and Administration. After retiring from education, Walden joined YSB. “I wish Judge Green was around to see my life come full circle by receiving the award named for him. I did meet him after he had retired and thanked him for his life-saving work. I’m proud to carry on his legacy.” Walden and Wester both stress the importance of the Chef Soiree to YSB’s mission. As a non-profit, the bureau relies heavily on grants, and fundraising – of which the Chef Soirée is by far their largest endeavor. Says Wester, “This event is so important to ensuring our troubled children and families get the critical services they need.” Walden adds, “The Chef Soirée is an amazing way for the whole community to come together and support a mission that’s important to our very future. I feel it’s my true purpose in life, and I know all involved with the bureau who work tirelessly all year long rely on the emotional and financial support that comes with the outpouring the event brings.”

It's A Very Peri February! FOR 23 YEARS, the Pantone universal language of color has influenced product development and purchasing decisions in multiple industries – including fashion, home furnishings, and industrial design, product packaging and graphic design. So we have decided to pay a tribute in this month's fashion feature to Pantone’s 2022 Color of the Year. An entirely new hue has been created for the first time ever to serve as Color of the Year. The brand new hue – a vivifying blue-violet with red undertones – boasts energy, consistency and excitement. Basically, it’s the happiest periwinkle around! Encompassing the qualities of the cool blues and at the same time possessing a warm violet-red undertone, PANTONE 17-3938 "Very Peri" displays a spirited, joyous attitude and dynamic presence that encourages unique creativity and imaginative expression. Each year, Pantone experts analyze societal trends, and the chosen color reflects the current global culture. “Creating a new color for the first time in the history of our Pantone Color of the Year educational color program reflects the global innovation and transformation taking place,” says Laurie Pressman, Vice President of the Pantone Color Institute. “The complexity of this new red-violetinfused blue hue highlights the expansive possibilities that lie before us.” So enjoy this fashion-forward, beautiful color that compliments most any skin tone and hair color, and put a little periwinkle love in your heart...and in your closet! 18 Sophisticated Woman | February 2022

The Power of Love

cover story

WRITTEN BY JAN WINDHORST PHOTOS BY STEVE RANDON

As children born in Mexico, Omar and Dulce Lugo couldn’t have imagined the dreams that would later come true for them in the United States: first, becoming high school sweethearts destined to share love, and then embarking on an entrepreneurial journey that is a shining example of the American Dream. Omar arrived in Dalton, Georgia at seven years old, where his parents found work at a carpet manufacturing plant. “Dulce’s mother worked in the same industry. When Dulce and I met, she was working at a kiosk in the mall. I was 17 and she was 15.” “It was love at first sight,” recalls Dulce. “I was young, but I knew he stood out. He looked good and had a way about him. He even smelled good,” she laughs. “I wouldn’t give my number to any other boys but him. I look back and see we didn’t have a clue. But we’ve been together 15 years and grown a family and business together. It’s been very challenging, but it was meant to be.” Omar’s feelings are mutual. “I was drawn to her sweet personality. Do you know that Dulce means sweet?” asks Omar. “She was very young, but mature and already working to help pay family bills – always thinking of others. We’re from different regions in Mexico, so she learned my mother’s recipes so I’d always feel at home. We experienced a lot together, and she always trusted me totally. She’s still that person. She supports me, always positive and sharing my vision. I love her for all of that.” Omar got a hint of his future during his first job as a bank teller. There, he was a liaison to Hispanic small business owners and found inspiration in them. The young couple valued education but chose to abandon their pursuit of college when Dulce became pregnant. When family in Louisiana offered Omar a restaurant job, he set south on his own. Six months later Dulce joined him. A year later, the couple reunited with their daughter, Victoria, who their parents kept for a time. Dulce remembers what seemed like another life. “We started with nothing, so we needed roommates. Omar was a server for five years. I started as bartender and became assistant manager. We both enjoyed the business and worked hard towards owning our own.” As dedicated as they were, that dream seemed impossible with the expenses of a young family and no credit for a starter loan. Whether fate, luck, hard work or faith, the Lugos found a benefactor in unlikely circumstances. Omar humbly explains, “He wasn’t even family. When he needed advice on his own restaurant, I helped asking nothing in return. He recognized our talent and drive and believed in our potential. Once he could, he loaned us money that a bank never would. We owe him so much. I paid him back after the first year plus extra for gratitude.” The Lugos opened their first Habanero’s location in August of 2014 with very little money for payroll and their four-year-old daughter tucked away in the office. The couple cross talks as they relive the challenges. “It was hard… nerve-racking. We were excited and scared, but this was our dream… some days we hardly had any customers. We didn’t have a single day off until Thanksgiving… we did most of the jobs ourselves. But we couldn’t have done it without our talented food master, Chef Oscar Rodriguez, who has been with us since day one!” As they describe the journey, you can see their excitement and hear their fear. But most importantly, they both express determination to make it as a team. True to Omar’s words, Dulce says she was all in. “I believe in him. I said, ‘We got this. We can do it.’ He is the visionary, and I’m excited to go for it with him.” Omar adds, “Even though work is challenging, our marriage is still strong because we’ve developed different areas of expertise. She handles daily operations beautifully, so I’m free to work on growth. I’m always thinking about evolving the brand with new menu items and cocktails, or a new location. I make plans, and she makes it happen.” Omar & Dulce Lugo – continued on page 24 Sophisticated Woman | February 2022 23

Omar & Dulce Lugo Habanero's Restaurants

The Lugos didn’t experience success without setbacks. A second Habanero’s location in New Orleans struggled for a year before closing. Another in Shreveport closed due to the distance and Covid. Now, with two additional thriving Habanero’s locations in West St. Tammany and another planned for Slidell, Omar sees value in those experiences. “Everything happens for a reason. We learn from it. Our initial success was based on delivering a more elevated take than just tacos and margaritas in terms of food quality, presentation, atmosphere and customer service. We’ve focused on strengths and built an expert team so that everything is done right. We’re personally there so customers can feel the love. I work to stay motivated and make each location unique to itself, always improving towards an atmosphere of ‘the’ place to be.” Now, Dulce picks up Victoria from volleyball practice with a little brother in tow. “I worked until my due date and went into labor that night. I stayed home with Gianni, and it was hard not seeing Omar much until he started preschool. We’re proud to have made a better life for our kids, but they also work for what they have. Victoria does chores at home and helps at the restaurants.” The days of nonstop work and money worries have changed also. Their devotion to each other and determination through difficult years have paid off and both agree that their relationship is at the heart of their happiness. “As long as the family is happy, we have everything,” says Omar. “We plan to grow our business, but I won’t choose ambition over my family. We still have challenges but we’re in a wonderful place.” Dulce’s demeanor relaxes as she tells of their current chapter and the accomplishments and joy of her life today. “We have a date night once a week, and we even travel frequently. We’re always looking to bring home ideas for the restaurants, but there’s time for shopping, fun, and enjoying life.” The Lugos are also bringing their heritage full circle while sharing it with their children. Of their many trips back to Mexico, Omar says, “We want to keep up with their different and exciting trends in cooking and presentation to remain authentically modern. Also, we want our children to know where they came from.” When back home, as servers deliver exotic drinks and plates steaming with delicious aromas against Habanero’s colorful, contemporary backdrop and lively chatter, Omar still stylishly stands out. And with Dulce by his side, we see that the teens with nothing but each other have transformed into a local power couple at the top of their game, enthusiastically accepted by their community. Dulce muses, “I genuinely admire him, and he inspires me to be better. Going through so much has made us stronger. He’s a great father and makes sure I know he loves me. He brings me flowers, leaves me notes on the mirror, and we talk about growing old together. I know he’ll always do the best for our family, so I’ll always be there beside him, no matter what life brings.” Habanero's Restaurants are located at 1331 N. Highway 190 in Covington, 985-871-8760, 69305 Highway 21, Suite 600 in Covington, 985-900-2124 | 1938 Highway 22 in Madisonville, 985-206-9950. Give the Gift of Nature WRITTEN BY SNOANN WILLETT, LOUISIANA MASTER GARDENER

LOOKING FOR UNIQUE gift-giving ideas this Valentine’s day? Other than staple offerings of exotic cut flowers or sweet edibles, the following are a few sustainable gifts for your gardening buddy or loved one. Roses as a bare-root, container plant or miniature variety make a lasting impression and investment. Choose a spot receiving six or more hours of sunlight and well-draining soil. Dig a hole slightly larger than the pot size. Add small amounts of natural fertilizer to the hole and place the rose on top. Backfill soil to the same height as it was in the container. Water thoroughly and mulch. Bare-root roses must be planted with the graft union two inches above the soil. Violets are a symbol of truth and loyalty per the Victorian language of flowers and one of the few colorful flowers that like cooler weather. To represent the favorite trait of your recipient, use blue for faithfulness, white for purity, and yellow for good deeds. Native violets in our area bloom during this month. Seek light shade and moist, well-drained soil. Many Indoor plants are an excellent choice as well. Orchids are low maintenance and have long-lasting flowers. Succulents with heart-shaped leaves/lobes are easy to care for, prefer bright light and require little water. Look for Hoya or Peperomia varieties. Anthuriums have heart-shaped flowers and do best in bright light (east or north-facing window) and humidity. Water when one inch of soil is dry. Or, create a bouquet of seed packets taped to bamboo skewers or chopsticks. Seeds could be flowers, herbs or vegetables. Arrange in a small vase or basket with a bow. February symbolizes transition, seeing the potential in all life, not just for the romantic. What better way to show your appreciation of someone or brighten their day than to give the gift of nature? Dare to be different. Happy Growing! 28 Sophisticated Woman | February 2022

First Cajun in Space WRITTEN BY JAN WINDHORST PHOTOS COURTESY ST. JUDE & HAYLEY ARCENEAUX

Hayley Arceneaux Grand Marshal of Covington Parade

NO, IT'S NOT A BOUDREAUX JOKE– her name is Arceneaux anyway – and it’s true. Hayley Arceneaux, named Grand Marshal of the “Wish Upon a Star” themed Carnival in Covington Parade on Mardi Gras Day, is a St. Jude Children's Research Hospital physician assistant and commercial astronaut who was born and raised in Louisiana. She joined Commander Jared Isaacman on the Inspiration4 mission, the first private spaceflight operated by SpaceX with a civilian crew, which launched on September 15, 2021, and successfully water-landed three days later. Incredibly, going to space is only one of Hayley’s stellar achievements. At ten years old, lying in a hospital bed at St. Jude fighting for her life, Hayley’s idea of reaching for the stars was beating bone cancer and raising funds for the institution that was helping her and so many other children live to see their dreams come true. So how, twenty years later, did the self-proclaimed Cajun find herself on a rocket ship suited up next to tech billionaire and pilot, Isaacman, about to actually orbit the earth? Well, some people just shine a little brighter. One week after earning her Taekwondo black belt, the youngster was diagnosed with osteosarcoma after suffering continued pain in her left knee. The first step to recovery was the proclamation, “I don’t want to die!” upon hearing the devastating news. The second was the immediate trip to Memphis to begin treatment at St. Jude. Hayley’s mother, Colleen, recalls the inability to speak her daughter’s name at check-in, rather, bursting into tears, not having fully processed the gravity of the situation. The moment that the receptionist embraced Colleen, ensuring her that they were now in the good hands of the St. Jude family, was the moment Hayley realized she would soon reciprocate, embracing St. Jude as family and her personal mission. Although memorabilia and remembrances highlight Hayley’s unbridled optimism, energy and gratitude – for example, photos document the dance party she staged for hospital staff reflecting her ‘show-must-go-on’ attitude – her surgery, treatments and physical therapy were serious and grueling. Hayley endured an operation to remove her knee and part of her thigh bone, replacing them with prostheses including an artificial femur which could be expanded without future surgeries. Although not painless, St. Jude’s work with innovative technology would give her a much better quality of life. She also began a year of in-house, intensive chemotherapy. Her enthusiasm for St. Jude, despite draining side effects, was rewarded with the unofficial titles of assistant receptionist and blood donor room gratitude administrator. While still undergoing treatment, Hayley began fundraising for her lifeline and newfound family of caregivers. While receiving the Louisiana Young Hero award back home at age 11, she was lauded for raising nearly $8,000 at her grammar school. Her acceptance message was that donations to St. Jude help save children’s lives. Foreshadowing the fundraising mission that would garner an astronomical multiple of that sum, she proclaimed “Children want to see their dreams – I know I did, and I know I’m going to.” She innocently continues, “I want to grow up to be a nurse and mentor at St. Jude. I’ll be able to say, ‘I had that when I was little, and now look at me.’” And look at her now, indeed. 30 Sophisticated Woman | February 2022

community spotlight While Hayley pursued adventure, traveling the world for study and mission trips while preparing to return to St. Jude to simultaneously pay it back and pay it forward, her achievements didn’t necessarily bring fame or mega riches. During those same 20 years, however, her future mission commander was building an empire, performing extreme physical feats and living dreams of his own. As founder and CEO of Shift4, a payment processing company that grew to handle a large percentage of North America’s hospitality industry, Isaacman secured billionaire status. His dream of flight, inspired by a boyhood experience at Space Camp’s Aviation Challenge led to his future mastery of piloting a variety of aircraft. He went on to found Draken International, which operates one of the world's largest privately owned fighter jet fleets and, amongst other functions, trains pilots for the US Armed Forces. His obsession with pushing boundaries motivated flying in airshows with the Black Diamond Jet Team during his 20s; setting the world record for circumnavigating the globe in a light jet in less than 62 hours in 2009; and, at just 38, masterminding last year’s Inspiration4 spaceflight. It was Isaacman’s dual decisions to tie-in a fundraising aspect to the mission, and to fill crewmember positions with civilians that led Hayley to be drawn into his orbit. Along with a goal of raising $200 million for St. Jude, Isaacman wanted a St. Jude employee to serve as an ambassador representing Hope - one of the four pillars of the history-making event. Thinking beyond just an entry in the record books, Time Magazine quotes the space pioneer as saying, “I could’ve just invited a bunch of my pilot buddies to go, and we would’ve had a great time... Instead, we wanted to bring in everyday people and energize everyone around the idea of opening up spaceflight to more of us.” St. Jude chose Hayley as that symbol of hope. “I know that the money and awareness raised from this is going to change lives,” she said. “And it means so much to me both as a former patient and now an employee to know that we’ll be able to help so many more kids because of it.” Truly opening up spaceflight to other than physically elite astronauts, Hayley will be the first to travel to space with a prosthesis. She says she is most excited to be the first pediatric cancer survivor in space. Her personal mission objective was to inspire her young patients back at St. Jude including an in-flight video call with them. Her message to them from space? "Even the sky is not the limit for you. My flight is a first, but it won’t be the last. If I can do it, so can you." Hayley enthusiastically accepted the first-of-its-kind challenge, despite the risks, dangers and physical demands it entailed. Astronauts perform years of basic training and then additional years devoted to a particular mission. This crew had approximately six months. Training at SpaceX headquarters included intensive, 60-hour, week-long sessions of simulator time and classroom work. Isaacman also conducted teambuilding and endurance exercises that took crewmembers out of their comfort zone including flying each one in a fighter jet, exposing them to g-forces similar to ones experienced during spaceflight. Also on the agenda was a punishing three-day hike up to 10,000 ft. on frigid Mount Rainier. Thankfully, Hayley’s astronaut training will have her well prepared for her Mardi Gras Day ride atop a float blazing its trail through the streets of Covington. Hopefully, as the “Wish Upon a Star” theme suggests, she’ll receive the unique thrill of being cheered on by throngs of revelers who personify her life’s mission: always find a reason to celebrate life amidst adversity, giving hope to others born of your hard-won victories. Hail Hayley, for showing us the adventure that awaits is ours to make, and that wishes really can come true. The Carnival in Covington Parade will roll in Downtown Covington on Tuesday, March 1 at 10 am with the Tammany Gras Afterparty starting at noon at the Covington Trailhead. Will You Be Annie's Valentine? WRITTEN BY SUSIE KAZNOWITZ, NHS DIRECTOR OF MARKETING

THROUGHOUT HISTORY,

Valentine’s Day

has been a symbol of loving relationships that can overcome even the most arduous challenges. While traditionally the special day refers to humans, there are so many deserving but homeless animals at Northshore Humane Society who are yearning to be your valentine this year! One of those loving animals is Annie, a beautiful large breed mix whose life just a few months ago was hanging in the balance. Annie was abandoned and left homeless on the streets, injured and carrying several baby puppies. This young mother is also suffering from heartworm disease, a disease if left untreated is always fatal. Annie has since given birth to five adorable puppies and has undergone surgery to her injured leg. The next step in her second chance journey will be months of heartworm treatment to finally get her healthy and ready for a forever home! With your support, we can rescue and treat dogs like Annie every day. Sadly, because many people are unaware of the dire effects of heartworms, we rescue an average of eight dogs per month with

this deadly disease. As a no-kill shelter, we believe every animal deserves a second chance and a healthy and happy life. Your donation will ensure our homeless animals receive the medical care they so desperately deserve, because love and the hope of a forever family should be the only thing in their hearts this Valentine’s Day. Please give now! Donations can be made by visiting our website at northshorehumane.org or mailing a check to Northshore Humane Society, 20384 Harrison Ave. Covington, LA 70433. Krewe of Eve: Return To Paradise "The Best Is Yet To Come" WRITTEN BY JAN WINDHORST PHOTOS COURTESY RICK KING

mardi gras

It’s funny that the words paradise and parade are so similar, because to the 465 members of the Krewe of Eve, that’s exactly what riding through the streets of Mandeville among throngs of revelers is to them. This year, after not being able to roll in 2021 due to Covid restrictions, paradise has been regained. Last year, the krewe would’ve celebrated their 35th ride, so this year’s theme reflects that milestone albeit a year later: 35.2 Years and the Best is Yet to Come. Each of the 22 floats will reflect a theme used previously in the parade’s long and colorful history. Amanda Jones, Eve’s Vice-President of Publicity, says the krewe was disappointed about last year’s cancellation but understood that safety comes first. “The upside is that everyone is doubly excited this year. Participation at our meetings is up, and we even have a great new tradition – The Apple Hunt.” Amanda explains that in lieu of their parade last year, Eve organized a scavenger hunt for their signature glitter-adorned apple throws. “Normally, we would’ve been throwing that day, so we wanted to engage our loyal parade-goers in a safe way. We took 35 of our apple throws — representing our 35 years — and packaged them along with some other throws. I got up before dawn to hide the bags all along the parade route. We posted a treasure map and clues on Facebook and as families found the apples, they posted their photos. It was received so well that we plan do it every year, maybe in the summertime.” Adding to this year's excitement is the unveiling of a new float. "We love surprises," says Amanda, "and this is a big one! Our members haven't even seen it yet. We also like mixing up throws too, and this year we are introducing a new plush dog throw in carnival colors along with our popular plush snake." And to make the night even brighter, the Krewe of Eve has lighted swords, hats, apple beads and apple rings. Amanda, Krewe Captain Christi Fair, three additional board members, and dozens of float lieutenants and sergeants work year-round to make Eve successful and fresh. For Amanda, it’s a passion that continues to grow. “I like being a part of something that’s so big in the community. I started in 2007 and get more involved every year. Riding was on my bucket list, then I became a lieutenant with my own float, and now I’m on the board.” Founded in 1986, Eve has stood the test of time and garnered a fiercely loyal membership, with some members spanning multiple generations. Amanda says this is the key to the krewe’s ongoing strength. “We have such a dedicated board and lieutenants, but we also have a core group of die-hard members who refuse to let anything stop us. They love bringing friends and family on board and support our efforts all year. Our members contribute to the Northshore Food Bank and the Sophisticated Woman | February 2022 35

We also put together 900 Christmas stockings for the Granny Gertie charity – we do Easter baskets with them as well – and our "Glitter Litter Krewe" teams up with Keep Mandeville Beautiful every quarter to clean up our streets.” Two such passionate Eve members are sisters Sarabeth DeLaune Accardo and Katie DeLaune Segrave. The twins were introduced to all things fun-loving about New Orleans at an early age as pages in the Krewe of Poseidon. As adults living on the Northshore, Katie was first to join Eve in 2008 and Sarabeth joined quickly after in 2009. “I joined Katie in the krewe after seeing how much fun she was having. We love how the Krewe of Eve gives back to the community in the form of toy drives, food drives and other opportunities to volunteer for great causes.” Katie and Sarabeth also take an opportunity to revel at the party of the year, Eve’s dinner dance, held at the Castine Center the Saturday before their ride, where the Royal Court is presented in all their bejeweled and feathered finery. Krewe members celebrate with their fellow riders and cheer for their lieutenant as each is recognized. Katie and Sarabeth’s husbands, Jacob and Jay, join in the festivities where the couples dance the night away. The twins' parents, Jay and Sue, join in on the party making family memories unique to this little part of the world. 36 Sophisticated Woman | February 2022

“It’s a rush to see thousands of people on the streets during the ride. Everyone is calling your name and yelling for you – that excitement is addictive. It’s the closest a normal person can come to being a rock star.” Making this year even more special, the sisters will introduce their next generation to the inner workings and traditions of Mardi Gras as their parents did for them. Logan will join mom Katie, with Jillian and Wyatt joining mom Sarabeth as Royal Pages to the King and Queen of Eve. Sarabeth beams, “We are really excited to share our love of carnival with all the kids who just can’t wait – especially Jillian who will have her day as a little princess.” And speaking of Eve royalty — of all of the masked merrymakers in attendance, one lucky krewe member will reign over the parade as Queen Eve. “It’s a once in a lifetime experience being at the center of it all. As exciting as it is to ride, there’s nothing like the intensity of the moment the court is announced.” This year’s Queen Eve is Mrs. Barbara Burns and is accompanied by her "King Adam", David Burns. Amanda concludes that the friendships, the activities, the charitable endeavors and the community outreach are all part of why the Eve family thrives, but there’s another reason these ladies work so hard all year to maintain their little slice of heaven on earth. “It’s a rush to see thousands of people on the streets during the ride. Everyone is calling your name and yelling for you – that excitement is addictive. It’s the closest a normal person can come to being a rock star.” The Krewe of Eve Parade will roll in Mandeville at 7 pm on Friday, February 18, 2022.
