New Year's Resolutions: Why They Fail & How You Can Succeed WRITTEN BY KIMBERLY BLAKER

T he New Year

is a great time to take inventory, set goals and take charge of your life. But if

you’re like most, making resolutions is much easier than keeping them. Rather than focus on a perfect outcome, which can lead to disappointment at the first slip, remember that self-improvement is an ongoing endeavor. Setbacks are not failure; they bring insight for future success. Before deciding on this year's resolutions, create a list of goals and changes you'd like to make. Then, review your list, and cross off any items you don't feel genuinely devoted to. Maybe you want to resolve to quit smoking or lose weight. You're more likely to succeed if you feel a strong personal commitment rather than 'I should.' One reason people falter is because resolutions are often made to silence the pestering of a loved one. If you decide to quit smoking to get your husband off your back, you're less likely to succeed. If you choose to quit smoking to feel healthier and be able to enjoy physical activity without being winded, you're more likely to experience success. Choose one or two resolutions on your list that you feel most committed to. Then, choose two more you feel confident you can do with ease. These last couple can help provide confidence for the more challenging ones. Next, make a clear plan for adhering to your resolutions. Put each resolution and steps to achieve them in writing. If your resolution requires a routine or schedule such as exercise, diet or completing your education, create a detailed plan to execute and track your progress. Also, post notes in strategic places such as on the refrigerator, mirror or steering wheel of your vehicle for positive reinforcement. Make sure your family understands the importance of your resolutions. If your resolution is something your family has been nagging you about, ask for their encouragement; but, explain that pressure and pestering, particularly during setbacks, could undermine your resolve. Determine how each family member can help you to achieve your goal, perhaps by taking on additional household chores or through affirmations of your continued success. Adjust your environment to enable success. If eating healthier is your goal, don’t fill the cupboards with junk food for other family members. Find healthy snacks they’re willing to substitute. If you’re trying to quit smoking, avoid people, places and things that tempt you - at least until you have it well under control. Don’t go it alone. If you have a friend with a similar resolution, make a pact. Work together to create a plan and make a point to check in with each other regularly for encouragement, praise, and support. If you resolve to get more exercise, do it together. Having a commitment and someone to accompany you will go a long way in helping you succeed. Finally, reward yourself - not just once you’ve achieved your goal, but for each small victory. Periodic rewards can be motivation enough to keep you strong when you’re ready to throw in the towel. Remember, whatever New Year 's resolutions you choose, success awaits you if you resolve never to give up trying. Sophisticated Woman | January 2022

Krewe of Eve: Return To Paradise "The Best Is Yet To Come" WRITTEN BY JAN WINDHORST PHOTOS COURTESY RICK KING

mardi gras

It’s funny that the words paradise and parade are so similar, because to the 465 members of the Krewe of Eve, that’s exactly what riding through the streets of Mandeville among throngs of revelers is to them. This year, after not being able to roll in 2021 due to Covid restrictions, paradise has been regained. Last year, the krewe would’ve celebrated their 35th ride, so this year’s theme reflects that milestone albeit a year later: 35.2 Years and the Best is Yet to Come. Each of the 22 floats will reflect a theme used previously in the parade’s long and colorful history. Amanda Jones, Eve’s Vice-President of Publicity, says the krewe was disappointed about last year’s cancellation but understood that safety comes first. “The upside is that everyone is doubly excited this year. Participation at our meetings is up, and we even have a great new tradition – The Apple Hunt.” Amanda explains that in lieu of their parade last year, Eve organized a scavenger hunt for their signature glitter-adorned apple throws. “Normally, we would’ve been throwing that day, so we wanted to engage our loyal parade-goers in a safe way. We took 35 of our apple throws — representing our 35 years — and packaged them along with some other throws. I got up before dawn to hide the bags all along the parade route. We posted a treasure map and clues on Facebook and as families found the apples, they posted their photos. It was received so well that we plan do it every year, maybe in the summertime.” Adding to this year's excitement is the unveiling of a new float. "We love surprises," says Amanda, "and this is a big one! Our members haven't even seen it yet. We also like mixing up throws too, and this year we are introducing a new plush dog throw in carvinal colors along with our popular plush snake." And to make the night even brighter, the Krewe of Eve has lighted swords, hats, apple beads and apple rings. Amanda, Krewe Captain Christi Fair, three additional board members, and dozens of float lieutenants and sergeants work year-round to make Eve successful and fresh. For Amanda, it’s a passion that continues to grow. “I like being a part of something that’s so big in the community. I started in 2007 and get more involved every year. Riding was on my bucket list, then I became a lieutenant with my own float, and now I’m on the board.” Founded in 1986, Eve has stood the test of time and garnered a fiercely loyal membership, with some members spanning multiple generations. Amanda says this is the key to the krewe’s ongoing strength. “We have such a dedicated board and lieutenants, but we also have a core group of die-hard members who refuse to let anything stop us. They love bringing friends and family on board and support our efforts all year. Our members contribute to the Northshore Food Bank and the Sophisticated Woman | January 2022 17

mardi gras Mandeville Police Holiday Gift Giveaway. We also put together 900 Christmas stockings for the Granny Gertie charity – we do Easter baskets with them as well – and our "Glitter Litter Krewe" teams up with Keep Mandeville Beautiful every quarter to clean up our streets.” Two such passionate Eve members are sisters Sarabeth DeLaune Accardo and Katie DeLaune Segrave. The twins were introduced to all things fun-loving about New Orleans at an early age as pages in the Krewe of Poseidon. As adults living on the Northshore, Katie was first to join Eve in 2008 and Sarabeth joined quickly after in 2009. “I joined Katie in the krewe after seeing how much fun she was having. We love how the Krewe of Eve gives back to the community in the form of toy drives, food drives and other opportunities to volunteer for great causes.” Katie and Sarabeth also take the opportunity to revel at the party of the year, Eve’s dinner dance, held at the Castine Center the Saturday before their ride, where the Royal Court is presented in all their bejeweled and feathered finery. Krewe members celebrate with their fellow riders and cheer for their lieutenant as each is recognized. Katie and Sarabeth’s husbands, Jacob and Jay, join in the festivities where the couples dance the night away. The twins' parents, Jay and Sue, join the party making family memories unique to this little part of the world. 18 Sophisticated Woman | January 2022

“It’s a rush to see thousands of people on the streets during the ride. Everyone is calling your name and yelling for you – that excitement is addictive. It’s the closest a normal person can come to being a rock star.” Making this year even more special, the sisters will introduce their next generation to the inner workings and traditions of Mardi Gras as their parents did for them. Logan will join mom Katie, with Jillian and Wyatt joining mom Sarabeth as Royal Pages to the King and Queen of Eve. Sarabeth beams, “We are really excited to share our love of carnival with all the kids who just can’t wait – especially Jillian who will have her day as a little princess.” And speaking of Eve royalty — of all of the masked merrymakers in attendance, one lucky krewe member will reign over the parade as Queen Eve. “It’s a once in a lifetime experience being at the center of it all. As exciting as it is to ride, there’s nothing like the intensity of the moment the court is announced.” This year’s Queen Eve is Mrs. Barbara Burns and is accompanied by her "King Adam", David Burns. Amanda concludes that the friendships, the activities, the charitable endeavors and the community outreach are all part of why the Eve family thrives, but there’s another reason these ladies work so hard all year to maintain their little slice of heaven on earth. “It’s a rush to see thousands of people on the streets during the ride. Everyone is calling your name and yelling for you – that excitement is addictive. It’s the closest a normal person can come to being a rock star.” The Krewe of Eve Parade will roll in Mandeville at 7 pm on Friday, February 18, 2022. Fun Facts About

Mardi Gras! The first parade was held February 24, 1857. The floats were decorated horse-drawn wagons. Accompanied by men who carried torches, these “Flambeauxs,” continue to light the way for nighttime parades.

Tossing “throws” to the crowd started in the 1870s by the Twelfth Night Revelers. In 1884, Rex started using medallions instead of trinkets. These are represented by today's doubloons.

Mardi Gras colors represent faith (green), power (gold) and justice (purple). They were selected in 1872 by Rex, the King of Carnival to honor the visiting Russian Grand Duke Alexis Alexandrovich Romanoff.

The term “krewe” is thought to have originated from the Mistick Krewe of Comus which was founded in 1856. Comus is the oldest organization of Mardi Gras.

Mardi Gras’ first women's group, Les Mysterieuses, was founded in 1896. In 1922, the first exclusively female group, the Krewe of Iris, was formed. But the first organization to host an all female parade was the Krewe of Venus 1941.

Bacchus was the first krewe to name a Hollywood celebrity as its parade monarch. In 1960, performer Danny Kaye reigned as the first celebrity Monarch for the Krewe of Bacchus. 20 Sophisticated Woman | January 2022

Food, Music & Fun Carnival in Covington Parade 2022 & Tammany Gras Captures It All Fat Tuesday, March 1! Our own Hayley Arceneaux from the Northshore will serve as our Grand Marshall on Mardi Gras Day — Fat Tuesday, March 1, 2022! Each will have a chosen representative from the medical community who went above and beyond during the Covid pandemic. Hayley and our Hometown Medical Heroes will all come together to perfectly fulfill the overall theme of the parade: WISH UPON A STAR. A crowd favorite, the Saints Superfans are returning to this year’s parade. They are known as the costumed die-hards fans that can be seen roaming the Dome during games. Superfans will rock the parade and the after party at the Covington Trailhead. “This is a spectacular lineup to lead the parade,” said Councilman at Large Larry Rolling, President of the Carnival in Covington Parade. “We are humbled to have Hayley, our Medical Heroes and the Superfans participate and support our expanding, familyfriendly Mardi Gras Day of fun,” added Rolling. “And, equally exciting, Soul Revival will supply the music at our Tammany Gras Free-For-All After-Party.” Covington’s Mardi Gras Parade rolls through the city’s historic downtown at 10 a.m. on March 1, 2022, with the after-party, Tammany Gras, starting at noon at The Covington Trailhead, 419 N. Gabrielle Harvin THE ELLE LOUNGE

New growth and the possibilities of pure potential are some of the most inspiring aspects of starting a new year. Upon entering Gabrielle Harvin’s new entrepreneurial undertaking, The Elle Lounge in Covington, her enthusiasm and style do not disappoint as she walks us through her journey and looks forward to a blossoming business and family life.

New Year. New Journey.

cover story

WRITTEN BY JAN WINDHORST PHOTOS BY STEVE RANDON

GABRIELLE HARVIN CHOSE the name, The Elle Lounge, for a variety of reasons. Not what traditionally comes to mind when imagining a lounge, her establishment is actually a beauty bar. “I wanted to playfully get across that our salon is about both beauty and relaxation – our motto is ‘Make Yourself a Priority’ and the décor encourages that.” Elle also holds a double meaning, being the last part of her name and a nod to the first letter of “lash,” which is her personal specialty. Her haven, which houses a staff of Licensed Estheticians experienced in lash extensions, eyebrows, skin care and spray tans, immediately grabs attention with the contrasting color scheme of bright pink blooms on a bold green blanket of twisting vines. “I just love floral themes, and the palette is inspired by the Beverly Hills Hotel. It’s unique...a little modern, a little Boho. It’s fun and different than other salons.” Gabrielle grew up in Lafayette and met her husband Clay, who is from Covington, at ULL. “Clay is a St. Paul’s boy through and through. I followed him to New Orleans where I graduated from John Jay Beauty College’s Esthetician Course. I didn’t know what esthetician meant growing up, but I began doing makeup for weddings and Mardi Gras balls and loved it. I took the first job that would have me – a small boutique on Magazine Street. The owner taught me about lash extension and sent me to school. I learned about the beauty industry, studied skin care, completed extensive hours and was one of the first to graduate in my class.” When Clay’s job brought the couple back to the Northshore, Gabrielle was left to build a new client base from scratch. After a year in a small Mandeville salon, the ambitious beauty decided to strike out on her own. “I rented a 200 square foot suite, and my business just blew up. At the time, there wasn’t a certain eyelash specialist over here, so word of mouth spread, and I was quickly booked two months out. That gave me the confidence to expand into this location.” Gabrielle shares her beauty philosophy, “There’s no certain look I try to achieve. Everyone is beautiful in a different way. I bring out their unique features in a natural way. After a session, it’s most rewarding to see them light up when I hand them the mirror. That confidence takes their look to an even higher level.” 2020 was a paradoxical year for Gabrielle – both exciting and frightening, and filled both with flurries of activity and planning alongside a global shutdown. “I had just signed my new lease, and two weeks later we were quarantining. I was panicked, but we just pushed through. Construction began in July, we had our wedding in August at The White Magnolia in Kentwood, and I was finally able to open in September. As soon as restrictions were lifted and women could go to the salon again, we got a rush of existing clients and new ones, so it actually turned out great.” Gabrielle says her business has grown to be like family, including the clients she sees regularly and the team of talented estheticians she’s assembled. But she’s also focused on growing the Harvin clan with Clay. “We’re doing IVF to start a family. I want to be open and have a voice about it. I discuss it with my clients, and we make a connection over fertility issues. My mom, Camille, had me at 19 and raised me by herself. It was just the two of us. She instilled in me the determination to never give up. She’s extremely supportive, and that means so much to me when going through business and personal challenges. I look forward to following her example with my children.” Always planning, Gabrielle has her sights on a second business location and a new residence. “We bought a large property in Folsom and want to start a ranch. Clay grew up on farm and was on the tractor with his dad every weekend. I never thought that his dream of returning to that lifestyle would be mine, but it is now. We’ll make it a forever home and picture building gardens and having goats and cattle - a place where we can open the back door and let the kids run and play. Having that work/life balance with people we love in a beautiful location – we can’t imagine anything better and can’t wait to see what this year brings!” The Elle Lounge is located at 69305 Highway 21, Suite 900 in Covington. Degenerative Disc Disease Isn’t Really A Disease WRITTEN BY BILLY BEAUDREAU, PT, DPT, MTC, OCS, FAAOMPT

WHEN YOU LOOK

in the mirror and see

wrinkles on your face, or graying in your hair, you don’t think of these as a disease. This is widely accepted as normal aging. Why then, when aging occurs within our spine, does it get labeled as a disease? Think of the discs in your spine as a spongy cushion that separates the bones of your spine. Each disc is like a jelly donut with a tougher outside and a fluid like inside. Degenerative disc disease (DDD) is a process where these discs lose height and hydration. What if I told you that there is research available that individuals with no symptoms of lower back pain had signs of Degenerative Disc Disease on MRIs ranging from 37% at age 20 to 93% at age 70 and above. We have all seen our loved ones get shorter as they get older. This is caused by degenerative disc disease. It is completely normal as we age. What isn’t normal is pain associated with this process. Yes, there are times when loss of disc height may contribute to a person’s pain, but many times this is not the case (as shown in the research above). Simply losing disc height, does not explain why you are in pain. There are many other possible explanations for why you’re in pain, such as muscle tightness, inflammation, joint irritation, etc. So next time you leave the doctor’s office with a diagnosis of Degenerative Disc Disease, consider yourself normal. A comprehensive physical therapy evaluation will help to determine the true cause of your pain and what you can do to get rid of it.

Estate Planning For Your Financial Health WRITTEN BY BRITTANY V. CARTER, ATTORNEY AT LAW

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Now is the time to

complete one of your New Year’s resolutions and check off your estate planning needs. The first document to put in place is a Last Will and Testament. This will ensure your last wishes are carried out and your assets are properly transferred to your designated loved ones. You may want to include a Testamentary Trust along with your Will, which can help preserve and protect certain assets for chosen beneficiaries, as well as establish specific boundaries and guidelines for the distribution of assets. There is also the possible option of a Living Trust, which goes into effect while you are still alive and can be revocable. Both Living and Testamentary Trusts have Special Needs options as well. Living Wills are equally important to put in place as part of meeting your estate planning needs. This document establishes your wishes should you ever be in a non-communicative and incurable state. Finally, a Power of Attorney is a document to consider in case you ever become incompetent or incapable of making financial and/or medical decisions on your own. There is a General Power of Attorney option that encompasses all decisionmaking aspects, and there is a Healthcare Power of Attorney option that specifically addresses HIPPA laws and allows for your loved ones to make informed decisions regarding your healthcare in the event that you are unable to make these decisions on your own. As always, it is important to consult with an attorney who primarily handles these areas of law to discuss further details of these documents, decide what is appropriate for your situation, and help ensure your needs are being met so that you can enjoy peace of mind and a wonderful year ahead. Thomas Francavilla MD, FAANS Many people suffer from back pain caused from nerve pressure. For many, traditional open spine surgery, with large incisions and lengthy recovery time, was the only solution to their chronic pain. Dr. Francavilla recognized minimally invasive spine surgery as a major advance for patients suffering from spinal related pain. A fellowship-trained neurosurgeon, Dr. Francavilla was an early adopter of this type of surgery, performing over 3,000 minimally invasive procedures since 2002. After completing his medical education at Tufts University School of Medicine, Dr. Francavilla did his neurosurgery residency at George Washington University. He continued his medical training with a fellowship at the National Institutes of Health in brain tumor metabolism and imaging. He continued his training with a second fellowship in minimally invasive spine surgery at the Laser Spine Institute. Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery, or MIS, is safer with faster recovery time and less risk to the patient. If you’ve been told that your painful condition doesn’t warrant surgery, you are too old, or your case is too advanced for surgery, MIS may be right for you.

A True Refuge in the Heart of Old Mandeville

THE HOME AT

300 Carroll Street at the corner

of Jefferson, also known as the Arthemise Goertz Roome House, was built circa 1893. The idyllic Eastlake-style cottage retains many original details and has also undergone renovations which have added modern amenities. According to the Historic Mandeville Marker Tour on which the Old Mandeville residence is a stop, this hidden gem is described as follows: “This Victorian, L-shaped shotgun house, sheltered under a huge live oak, has original details such as dropped-cap columns, quoins, jigsaw balustrade, fan brackets and unusual chevron-patterned lattice. Unlike many properties from Mandeville's early days, this one enjoyed long tenure by one family. The most prominent member of this family and occupant of this house would be author Arthemise Goertz (1903-2000), (who) was a New Orleans native, Tulane University 'magna cum laud' graduate, intrepid traveler and witness, with her mother, to WWII as a prisoner of war in Tokyo, Japan.” Goertz’s last novel is dedicated to the home and tells the story of 'turn-ofthe-century' Mandeville and its aristocratic, Creole French-speaking society during a long summer in 1909. Today, visitors enter the estate, which sits on three lots, by climbing the charming steps of the wooden porch that lead to French doors that look out onto Our Lady of the Lake’s beautifully kept grounds. A curtain of bamboo and the cover of Spanish moss swaying from the majestic oak dominate the street corner providing tranquility and privacy. A tin roof caps the two-bedroom, two-bathroom, 1416 square foot cottage in period style. A welcoming parlor offers 12-foot ceilings, heart pine floors and beadboard walls, and opens to the home’s primary bedroom. A large bay window that faces Jefferson Street adds architectural interest and abundant light to the bedroom. The en suite bath is eclectic with azure blue penny tile flooring, marble countertop and whimsically colorful, monkey-themed Schumacher wallpaper. As one makes their way through the home, they are ushered from the parlor to the dining area by a shared, angled, double fireplace. The crowning jewel of the dining area is the Flambeaux chandelier fanning out in tones of gold. Looking towards the back of the house, the dining area shares an open space that transitions from turn-of-the-century charm to the modern kitchen. story continued on page 31 Sophisticated Woman | January 2022 29

home feature A large kitchen island is topped with light colored marble and surrounded by upscale appliances, including an Ilve gas range and Frigidaire oversized, side-by-side column refrigerator and freezer. Accessed through French doors shared by the dining/kitchen area, a side porch faces Jefferson Street and mirrors the architectural details of the front porch. Throughout much of the home and the porches, the ceilings are painted Haint Blue. This term describes a collection of pale shades of blue-green traditionally used in the South, storied originally to keep evil spirits away. Today, the color is said to attract insects up and away from the people below. The home’s outdoor living area consists of a peaceful oasis boasting a large rectangular pool with slate surround, hot tub and swim out shelf. The homeowner describes this area as a family favorite. “We use this area all year round and all times of day. We regularly go out to drink coffee and watch our younger son swim. My husband and son watch TV and games out there. It’s used as much as the interior living spaces.” Other outdoor areas on the estate include a relaxing veranda at the back of the house and a large, grassed yard which accommodates the garage accessed on Jefferson Street. There is also a large peagraveled parking area accessed by an electric gate on Carroll Street that provides parking for multiple vehicles. Above the spacious garage is a bonus, openconcept, 640 square foot guest house with a bedroom area, kitchenette and bath. The owners use these quarters for visits from their college-aged son and out-of-town relatives, noting that it’s nice for guests to have their own separate and private space. The area could also be used as an office space, artist’s studio, game room or simply a secluded retreat. The owner describes the charm of the property’s layout and the neighborhood, “It has the peaceful feel of living in the country with a lot of land, but you’re able to walk to restaurants, church, school, shopping and green spaces. It’s fun to hear the school children laughing and church bells ringing. It gives the house and neighborhood a lively energy. You can get complete privacy by the pool, but you can also sit on the porch and see all the neighborhood activity — walkers, bikers, kids. We also have a golf cart to cruise the neighborhood and lakefront which is just a few blocks away. The location is very special.” Sophisticated Woman | January 2022 31

An Introdcution To Service Dog Laws 101 WRITTEN BY AMBER SHEPPARD, ESQ.

SPOILER ALERT!

I’m a lawyer who utilizes

a service dog named Tubbs. We travel the region together and educate businesses, mental health professionals and schools on working dog laws. In our column in the upcoming months, we are going to dig — pun intended — into the differences between service dogs, emotional support dogs and therapy dogs. Each working dog has specific laws and nuances that pertain to them, and one size does not fit all. Service dogs are specifically trained to perform tasks for an individual with a disability and are covered under the Americans with Disabilities Act. In Louisiana, our White Cane Law names service dogs as hearing, guide, seizure alert, mobility, autism service dog — “a dog providing assistance during a medical crisis,” and “a service dog providing assistance to persons, including veterans with traumatic brain injury or posttraumatic stress disorder.”

WO M A N

The task or tasks performed by the dog must

be directly related to the person's disability. They must be able to perform at least two tasks. Dogs can be trained to do these tasks by professional organizations or by their handlers.

be distracted by people, food, noises or animals. Registration, clear labeling of a service dog, or identification cards are not required under federal law. If a dog is aggressive, uses the restroom in the space, or is out of control, then a business owner can ask the dog to be removed from the premises
