DEBORAH HOWARD
Nest Custom Homes, LLC
DEBORAH HOWARD’S fascination with design and architecture goes back to childhood. She loved to design and “build” rooms out of boxes, styrofoam, construction paper and popsicle sticks. Fast forward 20+ years and after a 9-year career in teaching, she ventured into the world of real estate, earning her Realtor’s license in September 2004. In 2011, during the real estate slowdown, she decided to explore her creative side and became a kitchen & bath designer at a local cabinet store. That experience definitely renewed the “design bug” in her. In 2017, she embarked on a year-long program through LSU to earn her Certificate in Construction Management. As the licensed Residential Contractor at Nest Custom Homes, Deborah brings 16 years of real estate experience. She designs homes that will sell and guides buyers through the process of designing homes that will work for them – while also keeping resale value in mind. From designing the floorplans to selecting finishes, she enjoys each step of the construction project. Deborah is on the job site daily, monitoring all projects so that a superior end product is achieved.

In 2005, on a Georgia Interstate, I was the victim of a hit-and-run driver. The accident itself was horrifying. The injuries were bad. The betrayal by my own insurance company was worse. I had a very hefty Uninsured Motorist Policy that would have provided money for the help I needed. Instead of being on my side, my own auto insurance company duped me into signing my rights away for a quick check.
Don't let this happen to you. Call me.

Following Her Light
cover story
WRITTEN BY JAN WINDHORST PHOTOS BY STEVE RANDON
It’s been said that what hurts you blesses you, and that darkness is your candle. Jena Honea now fills once-dark places with the light of a bright future. Her story begins as she, a carefree girl of eight, discovered the yet unknown world of hurt and uncertainty caused by her parents’ difficult divorce. “It was traumatic. I moved in with my grandparents who gave me unconditional love and support, but both passed before I was 15. Mawmaw was my best friend.” A recurring theme for Jena, she worked hard to improve her situation. “Even though it was complicated, I love my mother, and we resumed our relationship.” Now a successful and confident businesswoman, Jena explains how working on her self-image would lead to building her dream career. “I was always overweight. I was uncomfortable in my skin, self-conscious and timid. I longed to be the opposite of myself – confident, beautiful… so I found an outlet in fashion. I loved designer clothes and accessories but since the clothes weren’t in my size, I’d buy designer purses and jewelry instead.” This retail therapy was a lifeline to her when depressed or stuck. While attending Southeastern, Jena didn’t find a major that eclipsed her love of the fashion industry, so as she pursued her General Studies degree, she also pursued that which made her happiest. “I had the seed of an idea for opening a boutique since high school and even knew it would be called Jenlyns – a nickname combining my first and middle names. Most importantly, it had to be inclusive of all sizes, ages and all budgets. In the summer of 2017, I went online and created wholesale accounts with my favorite clothing lines.” Her first marketing efforts consisted of a Faceboook group, and her workspace was the spare room in her mother's house. As her clientele grew, she expanded into her first retail location. “I bought a 20’ x 40’ shed that fit on my father-in-law's property and turned it into a cute, rustic boutique. There was just enough room to display the clothes and have a dressing room and checkout area.” With a full-time job at the same time, boutique hours were before and after work. “My dream was beginning to come true, and my husband, Dalton, encouraged me to quit my job and pursue it.” In March of 2019 Jena had gained the confidence to follow her heart and was solely focused on running her fledgling business. By May, she had signed a lease on her first store in Covington. “Our grand opening was June 1. We had crazy crowds and sales. Best day ever.” As quickly as February of 2020, the lease for a second location in Hammond had been signed and Jenlyns Boutique had taken flight. “We won The Northshore’s Best in Covington having been open only six months. The next year both the Covington and Hammond stores won. I couldn’t believe it and couldn’t contain my excitement.” Of a typical day, Jena says there is none. But her focus is aimed at growing her business. “I schedule my girls, and I work on my plan's priority for that day. I love the vibe of my warehouse and have a large social media following to manage which I do from my office there. We just finished our beautiful new website, and I spend a lot of time in both the Covington and Hammond stores.” Although she throws herself into every aspect of her business, there’s a special appreciation for working with customers. “It’s so rewarding when customers just glow when they try on our clothes. I know how it feels to find a sense of self in how you dress – you say something about yourself without ever having to speak. My employees know that too, and we provide a safe, comfortable place where we help customers find confidence in their appearance.” Learning that belief and tenacity result in success, Jena was empowered to take another bold step on her journey. “Last year, I had weight loss surgery and lost 100 pounds. Becoming healthy and finally feeling good about how I looked gave me the confidence and self-respect to stand up for myself. I feel physically and mentally better, and I’ll never forget the importance of women’s worth, no matter their size or age.” With success kindling ambition, Jena excitedly shares plans for a new store in Baton Rouge and more personal growth. “I’m 24 and newly single, so I’m not rushing kids, but I’d like to be a mother one day in a happy home where they’re proud of me, and I can provide for them. I found that growth is most personally fulfilling, so I’ll always work on making myself better. Now I know my potential is limitless.” As Jena’s candle grows increasingly brighter — lighting up once dark places— she says it’s a blessing to do what she’s passionate about. “I look back at the past three years and lean into God knowing he’ll provide.” Jenlyns Boutique has two locations: 315 Lee Lane, Suite 101 in Downtown Covington, 985-234-9437 and 221 W. Thomas Street in Downtown Hammond, 985-662-5072. Follow Jenlyns Boutique on Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest. Sophisticated Woman | July 2021 23

REIMAGINING HOMES
One Vision At A Time

ARDEN AND KATIE HILL aren’t afraid of projects — big projects. The six bedroom, three and a half bath, 4,794 square foot house at 106 Sherry Lane in Mandeville is their fifth house renovation together. When the couple first laid eyes on the house in 2018, it was in disrepair. But their incredible ability to envision houses’ potential kicked in, and they committed to the challenge. “The house was built in 1990 and the large lot with an abundance of trees was quiet and beautiful, but the last occupants had been renters who had animals. It looked like a haunted mansion,” said Arden. Katie adds, “It was a foreclosure. There were cobwebs and dust everywhere. We didn’t let our oneyear-old touch anything.” Along with the dirt, the previous owners had also maintained outdated design and systems choices including air conditioning window units, carpets, gold crown molding and red walls. To bring their vision to life, the renovation professionals knew they needed to reconfigure the layout to be more usable by moving walls and changing the function of existing rooms. First, they created an impressive twenty-foot-high entry foyer by opening up a portion of the second story. Two of the original eight bedrooms and a jack-and-jill bath were reimagined into a formal living room and an office with a wet bar in between. Arden finished the office with built-ins and added picture moulding and chair rail to both new rooms. The original laundry room was turned into a butler’s pantry and the utility is now housed in what once was the primary bedroom’s closet. Black and white, half-inch hexagonal tile was laid in the bath, bar and pantry as a fashionable unifying element. The biggest challenge the Hills said they faced, though, was the kitchen. “It was tight, but we managed to open it up. It also helps that the butler’s pantry contains an ice maker, bar sink and coffee bar.” The multi-talented team also upgraded from builder-grade to beautifully coordinated custom fixtures and finishes throughout the house. “In the kitchen, we added a black limestone tile floor, hand-made white and gray clay tiles to the walls, and Namib Fantasy countertops which have the durability of quartz and the look of marble. We even made room to fit a Hisense oversized refrigerator/freezer.” By creatively using space, a mudroom was added with window seat storage and built-in shelves, and as a buffer to transition into the primary bedroom, a library was created, also boasting built-in shelves. The primary bath area was reconfigured and finished with black and white, porcelain basketweave floors, white and subtle gray quartz countertops showcased by hand-built black cabinets, and brass fixtures. The area contains an infrared sauna and a restored, antique brass clawfoot tub and oversized shower with dual shower heads. The walk-in closet includes custom shelving and a hidden safe — all crowned by a tiered ice chandelier. Home Feature – continued on page 29 Sophisticated Woman | July 2021 27

"We wanted it to feel like a hundred-year-old home, but UPDATED with a MODERN FLOW and TODAY’S CONVENIENCES — and we did just that." Arden is not only a craftsman but also an artist and takes pride in his attention to detail as he describes more special touches throughout the house. "I put a level five finish on the walls to get them smooth. For continuity, I sack-finished the butler’s pantry, the fireplace in the den and also brought that finish outside to the bricked courtyard. The primary bedroom opens to the courtyard, so I closed it in for functionality and charm, added a fountain and made it festive with string lights." Back in the foyer, newly floored steps lead to one of two separate upstairs areas which contains three bedrooms floored in New England pine. One of the upstairs bathrooms features an antique sideboard transformed into a vanity, white subway tiled walls and the same basketweave tiled floor from downstairs. The other upstairs area offers two bedrooms, a bathroom plus a bonus room. A stroll outside on the 1.15 acre lot is a breath of fresh air with the help of numerous oak, pine and even cypress trees. Nearby houses are spaced nicely apart on their own generous parcels for a feeling of community but with ample breathing room. Reflecting on their handywork, the couple has achieved all they set out to do and more. “The front is classic Acadian style with a red brick porch, square white columns and black rocking chairs. We also added an old sugar kettle that acts as a goldfish pond. We matched that feel inside with antique sconces and light fixtures. We wanted it to feel like a hundredyear-old home, but updated with a modern flow and today’s conveniences — and we did just that. Now, we can’t wait to see what our next new adventure in renovation brings!” Sophisticated Woman | July 2021 29

Budget To Win WRITTEN BY AMANDA G. VILLEMARETTE, MS
I AM GOING
to mention a word with a bad
rap; think about how it makes you feel and let’s go from there. BUDGET. The word itself can stir up a slew of emotions — fear, worry, concern, annoyance — which can lead to avoidance, and that is the worst thing you can do! Are you competitive? Try to think of a budget as a means of winning. Winning is defined as “gaining, resulting in, or relating to victory in a contest or competition.” The more you gain 1901 Hwy 190, Suite 3, Mandeville • 985-624-4045 • Store Hours: Monday - Saturday 10am-6pm • www.nichemodernhome.com
(save), the more you win! And let’s be real, who doesn’t like to win anyway? A budget might feel like a set of rules, or like you are being told “No,” (“Drop the Bogg Bag and proceed to the nearest exit…now Karen!”) Thank goodness the only rule is: don’t go over budget! And if you do, modify it to fit your lifestyle. That may sound overwhelming. If so, just start simple by making a list of monthly income vs. monthly expenses. Know where your money is going. You might be surprised! What is important to you? Your values and goals should be evident by your spending. Then the tiniest of adjustments can put you back in the game. Budget=Win. Remember? “Don’t give up what you want most for what you want now.” - Neal A. Maxwell As Dr. Seuss would likely have said, start big or start small but for Heaven’s sake, do not NOT do anything at all!

Restoring Sensation After A Mastectomy WRITTEN BY JAN WINDHORST
TONI FRUGÉ WAS
originally diagnosed with invasive ductal carcinoma in 2017 at the young age of 38. After radiation and chemotherapy
treatment, she found herself in a continuous cycle of monitoring, during which she felt like she was just waiting for the cancer to come back. In 2019, after a self-exam, Toni discovered a lump and received a devastating diagnosis of stage IV breast cancer. “I was living in fear and wanted my life back from cancer, so I considered a double mastectomy. I was reluctant, though, because a friend had been through that surgery and experienced permanent numbness in her chest that was just terrible for her.” Numbness of the chest after breast reconstruction is one side effect of a mastectomy that is not often discussed. Sensory nerves that run from the breast to the brain send messages that allow a woman to feel touch, temperature and even pain. But those nerves are cut during a mastectomy when the rest of the breast tissue is removed. If the nerves aren’t repaired during reconstruction, they no longer send signals. This can leave women with partial to complete numbness extending from their collarbone to their belly button. Nerves can heal and regenerate over time depending on the extent of the surgery, but there are instances where women lose feeling permanently. The nerve damage caused by a mastectomy can also lead to "post-mastectomy pain syndrome", affecting 25 to 60 percent of patients, according to The New York Times. Having gone through a double mastectomy and subsequent reconstruction, Toni is on a mission to provide information to other women facing those same difficult decisions. “I’m an open book if I can help other women. We take being able to feel your chest area for granted. Intimacy with your significant other is so important, but even feeling the hot water on your body in the shower – not knowing if it’s too hot to burn you – is something we need to realize can be lost. When I learned there was a procedure to help regain feeling, even the chance of that was enough to help me decide to move ahead with the surgery.” Metairie surgeon Dr. Jules Walters introduced Toni to Resensation®. This surgical technique allows surgeons to reconnect nerves that were cut during a mastectomy with the goal of restoring the lost sensation. A nerve allograft bridges the gap between nerves in the chest and nerves in the newly reconstructed breast. The nerve allograft guides regrowth of nerve fibers and, over time, offers the opportunity to regain sensation. While oncological outcomes from breast cancer treatment continue to improve, the emotional and psychological trauma of surgery and treatment can severely impact a woman’s mental health and long-term quality of life. Research has shown that numbness caused by mastectomy can affect body image and psychological health, as well as increase the risk of injury. For many women restoring sensation after mastectomy can be life changing. “I had a nipple sparing mastectomy,” reports Toni. “To have feeling in my nipples is astonishing. It’s nice for my breasts to look great, but unless there is sensation, you don’t feel like your whole self. Now I feel complete. It can take a while for feeling to start to return because nerves regenerate slowly, but I started to get feeling back about four months after the reconstructive surgery.” The Resensation procedure does add some time to surgery, but Toni says that for her, the extra time in surgery was well worth her outcome. She added that the procedure did not affect her recovery time or add to post-surgical care. “After surgery I was initially numb from my belly button up. The first I time noticed feeling after surgery, months later, was my daughter giving me a hug. I thought, ‘Wow, it’s working!’ Cancer didn’t take that away from me like I thought it would. I’m so grateful and want others to know there is this procedure out there as they research and make their own decisions about their surgical options.”

LOOKING FOR A learning activity to keep kids occupied and engaged before school resumes? Undeterred by the searing heat of summer, here are top 10 warm-season plants that can be grown now. 1. Too Young For Lip Fillers?
community
A Tribute To Dr. Elizabeth Kinsley
WRITTEN BY MICHELE COOPER, MD
GIRLS THESE DAYS
take tons of selfies and
expertly filter and edit them. They are highly conscious of their looks and how they compare to the day’s “ideal.” Having two daughters and seeing their friends begin getting lip fillers, I questioned the acceptable age to start. The FDA gives limited approval for 21 and older, but doctors can administer injections to those under 21 at their discretion. Lip fillers are hyaluronic acid which is naturally found in the skin and aids in water retention and fullness. Fillers gradually disappear over time faster in the lips than other areas. If they are not what you hoped for, they are easily melted with a reversal agent. Fillers should not be injected into areas of active inflammation or infection. Plastic surgeons and dermatologists are better qualified to administer injections because they are well-versed in medical anatomy and have thousands of hours of training—even before completing their residency. Poor placement of filler by an inexperienced or unqualified injector can potentionally leave permanent deformity or blindness. In an age when girls spend money on all sorts of appearance enhancing measures, where do we draw the line? Anyone under 18 requires parental presence and signed consent. I personally think the age should be at least 18, but each case should be considered individually. Consider what prompted the desire for the fillers, the maturity level, risks and if expectations are realistic. While the decision is a personal one at any age, make sure you and/or your daughter understand the physical, psychological, and financial ramifications of the procedures. Do your homework and find a board-certified plastic surgeon or dermatologist to perform the procedure. While complications are rare you want the professional with the most extensive training to treat yourself or your loved one.
Michele Cooper is a Board Certified Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon in Mandeville. For more information, call 985-626-6136 or visit michelecoopermd.com.

Dr. Kinsley completed her Internship and Residency at Tulane University Affiliated Hospitals. She was later accepted to Louisiana State University for a fellowship in Hand and Micro-vascular Surgery which she completed in 1993. Dr. Kinsley went into private practice in New Orleans in 1993 specializing in hand surgery. After a year of private practice, she was accepted to the University of Tennessee Health Science Center to complete her Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery training. She went on to obtain board certification in the American Board of Surgery as well as the American Board of Plastic Surgery. After completion in 1996, Dr. Kinsley opened her practice in Covington, Louisiana where she continued to serve the community for the last 25 years. Remove sauce from heat and add basil. Stir once more, then smooth the surface of the sauce with a spatula. 5. Arrange the sliced veggies in alternating patterns. For example: eggplant, tomato, squash, zucchini – on top of the sauce from the outer edge to the middle of the pan. Season with salt and pepper. 6. Make the herb seasoning: In a small bowl, mix together the basil, garlic, parsley, thyme, salt, pepper and olive oil. Spoon the herb seasoning over the vegetables. 7. Cover the pan with foil and bake for 40 minutes. Uncover, and bake for another 20 minutes until the vegetables are softened.
